News GRADER
The 1,000th Cat 24 motor grader was delivered to Rio Tinto at a ceremony in Perth
Major milestone
The 72-tonne grader, number 1,000 to be built at Caterpillar’s factory in Decatur, Illinois, will be used at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo iron ore mine in the Pilbara.
The first Cat 24 motor grader was manufactured and assembled at the Decatur factory in 1996, designed specifically to build and maintain haul roads for ultra-class haul trucks.
WesTrac general manager of mining
Shane Thomas says the handover was another major milestone in WesTrac and Caterpillar’s relationship with Rio Tinto.
“The partnership has evolved over many years as Rio Tinto has continued to develop mines across Western Australia,” Thomas says.
“We’ve celebrated countless milestones, many to do with world-leading
technological advances, but it is pleasing to be reminded that the loyalty many operators have for Cat equipment stems from tried-and-true models such as the 24 motor grader, which has been made in the Decatur manufacturing facility for more than 25 years now.”
Rio Tinto general manager of mining equipment Ben Woffenden says the Cat 24 motor grader is well regarded within Rio Tinto, providing the right combination of power, weight and blade width to manage haul road maintenance at the company’s remote mine sites across Australia.
“The Cat 24 motor grader is a safe, reliable and high-performing machine that plays a core role in building and maintaining haul roads across Rio
Tinto’s Pilbara and US operations,” Woffenden says.
“This is the third-generation model we’ve used across our Pilbara mining operations and it is a privilege to take delivery of the 1,000th machine from Caterpillar and WesTrac.
“The machine will be put to work when it arrives at Paraburdoo. As a 24 x 7 operation, the effective upkeep of haul roads is required to keep our fleet working productively and efficiently, so the 24 motor grader has a vital role to play.”
ACQUISITION Onsite buy
Industrial rental firm Onsite will join Sime Darby’s group of businesses
Malaysian conglomerate Sime Darby Berhad has announced that its whollyowned subsidiary Sime Darby Allied Operations Pty Ltd will acquire Onsite Rental Group Limited, an Australian equipment rental provider that supplies the construction, mining and energy industries.
“Sime Darby is strategically positioning itself to capture demand across the resources, infrastructure and energy sectors,” Sime Darby Berhad Group CEO Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson says.
“The Onsite acquisition complements our existing portfolio and provides geographic expansion to position

Onesite CEO Mike Foureur adds: “Sime Darby is a natural fit for Onsite, and we are thrilled to be joining forces to build on our great success in the Australian market. With this backing, Onsite can invest into adjacencies, achieve supply chain efficiencies, expand into new markets and enhance our offering to accelerate growth and contract wins.”
Longer life
Atlas Copco has launched its next-generation WEDA D95 dewatering pump
Atlas Copco Power and Flow has launched a next-generation electric submersible dewatering pump, the WEDA D95, incorporating state-ofthe-art Wear Deflector Technology.
Atlas Copco says the deflector technology gives the pumps a longer lifetime than comparable pumps in heavily abrasive environments such as mining, tunnelling and construction.
WEDA D95 has a power rating of 37–43kW and is the latest pump in the WEDA D drainage range to feature Wear Deflector Technology. A chrome wear-resistant impeller combined with solid-redirecting auxiliary vanes improve the pumps’ performance, while re-adjustable hydraulics allow the pump to be realigned to compensate for any wear, prolonging its life.
“There are often many suspended solids in harsh applications, which can cause excessive abrasion and wear to the internal workings of the pump,”
Atlas Copco Power and Flow product marketing manager, submersible pumps Bart Duijvelaar says.
“At Atlas Copco we are driven by innovation, and so we have taken the
fundamental design of the drainage pump back to the drawing board. We have optimised the hydraulic design using computational fluid dynamics and applied 21st century manufacturing techniques combined with decades of experience to produce this new longlasting and reliable pump.”
Users can carry out inspection and maintenance on site themselves and reduce downtime and associated costs. For example, the mechanical seal is a unique stainless-steel single cartridge, rather than several separate components, making it easy to replace in one piece.
WEDA D95 also features external oil inspection screws. Operators can easily access the screws to check the quality of the oil and the health status of the seal without having to dismantle the whole pump. This makes preventive maintenance easy so users can detect problems before they lead to failure.
The D range of pumps are available with various accessories, including different types of discharge connections, pump rafts and zinc anodes, to provide extra corrosion resistance.

Planning ahead GRADERS
Bell Equipment is expanding its mining and construction OEM product range to include motor graders
Bell Equipment, a South African manufacturer best known for articulated dump trucks, has announced that it will be developing a line of motor graders, with production planned for Q3 2024.
“Grading applications require a robust and powerful grader to achieve the performance and reliability expectations of the industry,” Bell Equipment product manager Warren Swart says.
“Where many new-to-market smaller graders have been found insufficient and prone to failure, we are confident that our new Bell motor graders will compare favourably with the proven industry leaders in this highly specialised market and give our customers exactly what they need.”
Bell will initially offer three base machines. The G140 is designed for maintenance and light to medium construction tasks while the G160, with its increased power and performance, is designed to handle heavy construction applications. Completing the range is the G200, which is designed for bulk earthworks and the mining industry. Each base machine has the option of a four- or six-wheel drive configuration.
“From the conception of the Bell grader we factored in the requirements of a six-wheel drive configuration,” Swart says.
“This early integration, as opposed to trying to add into the platform later, has resulted in a better performing machine that is more controllable, robust, and easier to maintain.
“The significant improvement in performance achieved by adding front-wheel drive is only useful if it is reliable for the life of the grader, so we have spent a lot of time making sure this is the case.”
The Bell Graders are fitted with Cummins engines and ZF transmissions. The G140 uses the Ergopower transmission while the larger G160 and G200 use the cPower transmission.
Bell says that it will be launching graders into its various international markets in a staged approach. In Australia, Bell has an office in Perth and distributes its machinery through Hitachi Construction Machinery in NSW.
Bell Equipment is also expanding its reach into underground mining, with plans to develop a six-tonne low profile load haul dump loader. This machine is in the design phase and will be commercialised by 2024.
Heavier duty
The Heavy Duty range of Hercules wheel loaders builds upon over three decades of engineering experience that has been crafted to suit Australia’s demanding earthmoving conditions.
Distributed throughout Australia by sales executive Steven Ragenovich and the team at Yatala-based Brisbane Mini Excavators Sales (BMES), the range of loaders can tackle a wide range of earthmoving jobs.
Spanning four models, the Heavy-Duty range – known as the HD Series – is built using quality materials and assembled locally with both the operator and owner in mind.
The range begins with the 11-tonne HD636 model, moving up to the 17tonne HD656, 21-tonne HD668 and
the largest and newest addition to the BMES yard – the 25-tonne HD676.
Designed for both earthmoving and agricultural use, the HD Series has earned a reputation as an allrounder onsite, with the loaders excelling in demanding applications.
“The HD Series loaders are built for heavy-duty applications such as major stick raking, dam clearing and restoration, quarry work, bulk handling and all-round agricultural use such as spreading fertiliser and on cattle properties,” Ragenovich says.
“Hercules has been building and developing this particular series of loaders for 30 years.”
In addition to the striking yellow paint job sported by each model of the HD Series, there’s plenty of features on the machines that equip them to
handle larger jobs in earthmoving, construction and farming. With a maximum dumping height that ranges from 2.87m on the smaller HD636 model through to well above 3m on the HD676, operators can move material such as soil and construction waste with ease. A hydraulic quick hitch makes changing between the plethora of attachments offered by BMES easy, meaning the HD Series is a true all-purpose machine. Ragenovich describes the machines as a ‘tool handler’ that can be equipped with a jib, heavy duty pallet forks, rear rippers, stick rakes and rock buckets. For the operator, the rollover protection system/falling object projection system (ROPS/FOPS)certified cab provides a heightened level of safety, while the cab itself
features a fully integrated high efficiency air-conditioning and heating system that lets the operator work in comfort.
The HD Series loaders are equipped with a heavy-duty drive train and are powered by highly efficient Caterpillarnominated engines. Transmission guards, a high-density dust air filtration system manufactured by Mann+Hummell and quality armoured tyres are key features.
Bucket capacities on the loaders range from 2.5 cubic metres on the HD636 through to 7 cubic metres on the larger HD676, meaning operators can move more and do more in less time.
An advanced cooling system is available as standard, but this can
also be further upgraded to a higher ambience package for regions prone to extreme heat.
With a two-year/2,000-hour warranty on parts and labour and a three-year/4,000-hour warranty on the engine that is backed up by BMES’ aftersales support, spare parts and technical advice, Ragenovich says the loaders are the ideal machine for any site around the country.
“Our customers have been very happy with what they are getting in a quality build loader for a very competitive price point,” he says.
“The customers also appreciate our support after the sale as far as technical advice, supplied filters and parts, which we carry the full range of, with an experienced dedicated parts department.”
BMES operates out of Yatala in Queensland but services Hercules vehicle across Australia. The
business has been around for 34 years, with a team of 20 staff combining over two decades of experience in a dedicated sales, parts and technical department.
“We’ve been here for over 30 years – we’re a business with longevity, experience and reliability,” Ragenovich says.
“Our customers are far and wide and they rely on us for quick, quick response time for technical advice, servicing and delivery of spare parts.”

Earthmoving Technology Solutions – Safety Shield
The Safety Shield from Earthmoving Technology Solutions (ETS) is a retrofittable safety detection system that
alerts the operator to stop and check their surroundings onsite. Utilising advanced radar technology and multiple sensors around the excavator, the Safety Shield AI system can easily navigate through busy construction sites, looking out for potential hazards.
The system detects potential collisions and hazards with other people, machinery or obstructions by alerting operators via both visual –in the form of a red detection outline displayed on the monitor – and audio warnings, to take action. ETS says Safety Shield leads to improved productivity onsite as well as the obvious benefits of a safer, more successful operation.
Inlon – Civiline LT 9600i slope track mower
Civiline’s LT 9600i slope track mower is a remote-controlled and self-propelled machine that dominates on steep inclines as well as roadside mulching applications. The rotary mulching mower features low ground impact and a low centre of gravity, capable of cutting from 185mm down to 50mm, while the drive track system provides the LT 9600i with enough stability and traction to handle mulching on rough and uneven ground.
The LT 9600i is powered by a 25.5 horsepower (17.7kW) Kawasaki engine. Kawaksi EFI fuel management is also included and continually adjusts power to load in order to keep the blade tip speed constant and ground speed steady.
Low-hour specialist
NSW used equipment dealer Coleman’s Equipment has been sourcing high quality low hour civil construction, mining and earthmoving equipment for over 15 years, stocking everything from excavators, dozers and graders through to water carts, rollers and scrapers.
Able to supply a wide range of major brands and models, Coleman’s Equipment business operations manager Jeremy Frew says the business’ extensive network, both nationally and internationally, has been key to consistently sourcing fresh product, especially in a time of disrupted supply lines and delays.
“While there are still some delays being experienced due to shipping of both new and used equipment –with most industries and suppliers experiencing the same issues – due to the strong relationships we have built over the years with companies like [US water tank manufacturer] Curry Supply Co, we have continued to meet our customers’ needs,” Frew says.
With Coleman’s Equipment one of Curry Supply’s largest offroad truck suppliers globally, the recent ConExpo show in Las Vegas provided the opportunity to put a joint Coleman’s/Curry water tank on display – the 20,000-litre CA5000C.
“As well as continuing to strengthen our existing relationships with our
suppliers, such as Curry Supply, Sitech Solutions and Trimble, we also continue to have very strong supply relationships with our customers,” Frew says.
“For us it’s very important that we focus on the future and an ongoing partnership, rather than a single transaction.”
When asked how the used equipment landscape is looking now and what machinery is proving the most popular, Frew points out that Coleman’s has traditionally focused on used Caterpillar D6 dozers and Caterpillar 140M3/150 graders.
“However, due to shortages in
the market, we have expanded our focus into other machinery, and are now able to supply all types of civil and mining equipment, from small/ medium-sized excavators to large excavators, articulated and rigid dump trucks, wheel loaders and more,” Frew says.
“We continue to have a strong focus on the civil construction segment across the Eastern Seaboard of Australia and water carts are still a major part of the business. For example, we recently prepared a Hydrema articulated water truck with front sprays.
“Coleman’s Equipment continues to set the bar as the premium quality low hour machines in Australia. We also own our own stock, which provides us with firm control over our extensive inventory. We are very proud of our reputation and the quality of the gear.
“We have an extensive workshop and knowledge across the industry, as well as long-term customers and specific supplier relationships, which enables us to deliver some services quicker and more efficiently than our competitors.”

PRESSEXTRA
For family-owned building materials supplier Menai Sand and Soil , the standout performance of a new Hyundai HL730-9 wheel loader in the loading yard meant that a second wasn’t far behind. Here, we have a chat with owner and director Phill Russo about how his new loaders are proving to be the star of the show
Supporting local
This month we headed to the southern suburbs of Sydney to check in with a busy family-owned building material supplier and see how two new Hyundai HL730-9 wheel loaders from Porter Group have settled in.
Menai Sand and Soil has been operating since 1983 from its base in Lucas Heights, supplying landscaping and building materials to trade and retail customers as well as large-scale projects.
When current owner Phill Russo took over eight years ago, a fresh approach saw the wellknown company expand both its product offering and its reach. Now, customers across Sydney and the Greater Sydney region come to Menai to source everything from sand and gravel to paving, bricks and sandstone.
“My father used to do a little bit of landscape supplies, then I met some landscapers and started working with them when I was in my late teens,” Russo says.
“I enjoyed the physical and construction side of it – that you could change someone’s backyard – which motivated me to move into the landscaping and construction business myself. I then did that for 28 years.”
Being in the landscaping game meant that he was a regular customer of Menai Soil and Sand, so when the previous owner mentioned that they were thinking of selling the business, Russo saw an opportunity to bring a new approach and take the company into the next stage of its life.
“I used to come here every day and pick up materials,” Russo says.
“I had a chat with the then-owner one day. He decided to sell, and I was happy to buy. Since then, the business has only gone upwards. I’m the third owner in 40 years of business, so it’s very well known around the area.
“We came in with some fresh ideas from the landscaping side and turned it into a family business. Both my boys work here, my daughter
worked here before moving into teaching and my wife worked here at one stage. We’re a local family business and most of our 15 employees are locals.”
Menai Soil and Sand is known particularly for its pebble range, he explains, with his business supplying the largest range in the area, as well as the wide variety of building products available.
“If you’re looking for something, we have it, and if we can’t get it, we’ll source it for you,” Russo says.
“Customer service is second-tonone. We’ve got the old-fashioned service where we’re happy to put bags in the back of your car. That’s how we’ve built the business up over the last seven years – I’m happy to go out there and load timber or
bags of mulch. We don’t just send customers out and say: ‘This is where it is, pick it up yourself.’ We’re very proud of our customer service.”
The Menai fleet
On the two-and-a-half acre site in Lucas Heights, Russo has a fleet of 12 trucks, a couple of forklifts and an excavator to transport all of the materials around, but the stand-out attraction is a pair of new Hyundai HL730-9 wheel loaders supplied by Porter Group.
This is the first time Russo has bought machinery from Porter Group and it’s gotten off to a flying start.
“I bought one loader initially and I was that impressed with the machine and the service from Porter
Group that it prompted me to buy a second loader,” Russo says.
“I’d originally said that I’d look into buying a second in maybe a year or two’s time, but I was so impressed with the first one that I traded in an old loader I had and bought another one.”
The two HL730-9s spend their days zipping around the site loading the Menai fleet of delivery trucks, which run from three tonnes all the way up to 32 tonnes. They are also used to load customers’ trucks, from box trailers up to truck and dogs and rigids.
“They’re very versatile in what they do,” Russo says, adding that each wheel loader moves around 100 tonnes of material a day.
“We start at six o’clock in the

morning and they run to about 4.30 in the afternoon,” he adds.
“I chose this particular model because it’s suited me perfectly. It is a big enough machine to handle the loads, but still small enough to be manoeuvrable and load my retail customers’ trailers.”
The HL730-9 comes in at an operating weight of 9.8 tonnes as standard, with a heaped bucket capacity of 1.9 cubic metres. The Tier III Cummins QSB4.5 engine is paired with an automatic ZF transmission that has four work modes for various applications, while the 5.7-inch LCD display allows operators to select their personal preferences and preset boom kick-out and bucket-level position. The display also shows the load weight, while Hyundai’s Hi-mate
remote management system can track the vehicle’s location and access diagnostic information.
Enhanced axles improve driving on uneven ground while self-adjusting brakes automatically compensate for disc wear to improve performance. Rotational switches allow the operator to customise the engine power, transmission shift timing and clutch cut-off to adapt the loader to different applications.
With regards to Russo’s first impressions of the new Hyundai 9 series loader, he says the durability, ease of changing attachments, visibility from the cab and the safety features have all been standouts for his team at Menai. Russo also chose to have auto-grease systems installed on the two loaders, which
has been a major plus in terms of ease of maintenance.
Porter Group
With the two Hyundai loaders being Russo’s first purchase from Porter Group, he says the customer care that he has received has been excellent – particularly with regards to maintenance.
“I signed up with Porter Group for the scheduled servicing and I’ve had both loaders serviced a couple of times now,” he says.
“From booking it in to the actual technician coming out, it’s seamless on my part, which makes my job so much easier. I don’t have to worry about whether a technician is going to come out, or whether the machine is going to break down.
I would recommend these loaders to another landscape yard, without a doubt.

The aftersales is fantastic,” he adds.
“Usually, you’ll be sold a spiel and they’ll say ‘this’ll be alright afterwards’. But, with Porter Group, it definitely is – they stand behind their product.”
When asked what cemented his decision to buy the initial Hyundai loader, Russo says that the price point was key, as well as the size of machine and features it offered.
“I would recommend these loaders to another landscape yard, without a doubt,” he says.
“When I need to renew these loaders, I will be definitely going back to Hyundai.”

New horizons
LiuGong Australia officially opened its new Australian headquarters in west Melbourne on May 10, using the event to launch its new range of electric construction machinery to the Australian market
Laverton North, in the western suburbs of Melbourne, was the site of a full machinery showcase on May 10 as LiuGong Australia held an opening ceremony for its new regional headquarters. As well as acting as a regional management centre, the site will also operate as a spare parts distribution facility and a research and training hub.
With LiuGong vice president Luo Guobing in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony, the event also saw the launch of the 856H-E Max electric wheel loader, 9027F-E electric compact excavator and LiuGong’s new set of aerial work paltforms to the Australian market.
LiuGong Australia chairman Deng Tao says that the new facility in Melbourne and the launch of LiuGong’s electric machinery “represent a great future of green technology in Australia”.
“Standing in LiuGong’s very own regional headquarters, we will shift our focus into product development, research and training,” he says.
“LiuGong is committed to providing customers with innovative solutions that are changing the face of industry. We continuously explore ways to add value to our customers and operations by establishing long-term
partnerships based on a culture of trust and action.
“Our new electric products line exemplifies this. These products have not only been designed to be quieter and more user friendly, they can also significantly reduce operating costs.”
Going green
Last year, LiuGong became the first company in the construction machinery industry in China to export electric loaders to overseas
markets. With electric units being delivered to the US and UK earlier this year, Australia has now had its first look at the 856H-E Max wheel loader and 9027F-E excavator.
LiuGong says these two new models will be the first of an expanding suite of electric heavy duty machines for the mining, quarrying, road building and construction industries.
The 856H-E Max wheel loader is a 21-tonne, 432kWh batteryoperated machine that has a rated load capacity of 5.8 tonnes, a 3.5 cubic metre bucket capacity and a 3m dump clearance height. The loader can operate on one charge for up to 10 hours, depending on the operation, while the Intelligent Battery Management System can be fast charged in just 90 minutes.
Features include load-sensing hydraulics, an EAT700 transmission with an electro-proportional valve for fast, smooth shifting and independent control of the dualmotor drive for maximum hydraulic lift. An Intelligent Auto Digging System can reduce operator fatigue by automatically undertaking digging cycles.
“The 856HE Max electric wheel loader is truly revolutionising the wheel loader market,” LiuGong Australia director Shannon Bethe says.
“The 856HE Max wheel loader is zero emissions, energy efficient, safe, low cost and relatively maintenance free. The 856HE features the latest electrical technology, providing all the
green credentials you would expect without any compromise when it comes to power, performance or comfort.”
The new 9027F-E excavator is a 2,680kg compact machine with a 0.08 cubic metre bucket capacity, 20.6kWh storage capacity and a dig depth of 2,857mm. The excavator has zero tail swing, making it ideal for compact work sites.
“The compact electric excavator is packed with features such as energy efficiency, zero emissions, low noise, electrical-driven intelligent technology such as a touchscreen central control panel, an intelligent
battery management system, electric proportional joystick control and adjustable auxiliary flows,” Bethe says, adding that there are a suite of safety options including LED work lights, an emergency stop switch and ROPS cabin.
Bethe says that the electric additions to the company’s machinery range shows LiuGong’s “commitment to manufacturing the highest quality machines that meet the versatile needs of customers and further establishes LiuGong as the premium Chinese manufacturer in the Australian market”.
“Our new wheel loaders alone have been put to the test in 500 work sites around the world, clocking over 90,000 hours combined in every environment you can imagine, from coal processing and power plants to road construction and cement production.
“We know that this will give our customers here in Australia the added confidence that LiuGong machines and advanced battery technology will perform, no matter the application or worksite conditions, while also meeting customers’ strict ESG [environmental,
social and governance] goals.
“Our machines provide sustainable choice for asset owners wanting to reduce their carbon emissions whilst giving operators new levels of safety and comfort, no matter the environment or application they work in.”

Budget outcomes
Now that the Budget has been released, we know that $15.5 billion is allocated in 2023–24 to identified state infrastructure projects.
There is $36 million of that amount committed to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games for 2023–24. This increases to $1,07.9 million for 2024–25, $348.4 million for 2025–26 and $583.8 million for 2026–27.
Queensland has been allocated $390.7 million for the Southeast Queensland City Deal, which will be distributed over the next four years until 2026–27. Queensland has also been allocated $170.2 million for the Townsville City Deal to be distributed over the next three years until 2025–26. There are no further projects under this expense item for Queensland.
The Budget has maintained the 10-year $120 billion pipeline of infrastructure projects with a few key highlights:
• Black spot projects will be funded at $120.1 million each year, with Queensland receiving $24.3 million each year;
• T he Bridges Renewal Program has been retained at $95 million per year until 2025–26 with an increase to $105.4 million for 2026–27. Queensland will receive $16 million in 2023–24, $33.9 million for 2024–25 and 2025–26, and $37.7 million for 2026–27;
• Queensland will get an increase in funding for the Northern Australian Roads Program from 7.9 million for 2022–23 to $28.2 million for 2023–24. Queensland will also receive $44 million for 2024–25, $49.7 million for 2025–26, and $44 million for 2026–27;
• Similarly, the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program increases from $12.8 million for 2022–23 to $14 million in 2023–24. Queensland also then receives
$24.8 million for 2024–25 and 2025–26 and $21.8 million for 2026–27;
• T here is a total of $172.2 million out of $370.2 million over five years for Major Project Business Cases in Queensland;
• Rail investment increases to an average of $3.8 billion over the next four years, with Queensland receiving an average of $364.8 million each year until 2026–27;
• A n average of $8.1 billion over the next four years will go to road investment, with Queensland receiving an average of $2.1 billion each year until 2026–27;
• Roads of strategic importance will receive an average of $753.5 million over the next four years, with Queensland receiving an average of $181.5 million each year until 2026–27;
• t here is $101.7 million each year for Roads to Recovery in Queensland. This figure included payments direct to local government;
• Local roads and community infrastructure funding will have a significant reduction. The national allocation of fundings drops from $956.6 million for 2022–23 to an average of $283 million over the next three years. There is no funding allocated for 2026–27. Queensland will see a drop from $171 million to an average of $57.7 million for the same period; and
• Queensland will receive the lion’s share of the National Water Grid fund, receiving $750.8 million of the $1.5 billion nationally over the next four years.
Many major road improvement projects will receive funding, though local roads and community infrastructure will see a cut in investment
The current list of proposed national projects developed under the previous government will be reviewed over a 90-day period to identify projects that are a priority. We currently do not know which projects will make it through to the review for the allocation of funding.
This review will be conducted over the period when most state budgets are delivered. This will create angst as some projects included in state and territory budgets may be under threat based on the outcome of the review.
In the current climate of high government debt and elevated inflation it is sensible to moderate and prioritise spending on essential items, and infrastructure should be considered in this light. However, each review and decision must consider raising productivity not only through the amenity it provides but how the infrastructure is delivered.
The issue of multi-factor productivity is not new for the civil construction industry, which has been struggling to create a sustainable increase in activity for 30 years. The industry is seen to have a poor record in achieving productivity growth.
The result of this failing is that there is increasing pressure to provide the necessary resources to meet increasing demands. A major effort to improve productivity is needed to be able to alleviate the effects of these pressures, including the increase of costs and time to deliver projects.
Governments have a major role to play by providing a legal and regulatory environment to foster productivity improvements. Some elements in some jurisdictions are being addressed such as training and skill development, collaboration and workforce resilience.
What is missing is true investment into innovation, further product market deregulation, alleviating financing restraints on business, and improving the industrial relations environment.
It will be a failure if the 90-day review is not underpinned by a real policy shift to improve productivity in our sector across all jurisdictions.
LIFTING
Multi mode
Volvo CE’s new Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom turns E-Series high reach excavators into equipment transporters
Volvo CE’s Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom can be fitted from factory to any of the company’s E-Series high reach excavators: the EC380E HR, the EC480E HR and the EC750E HR, each of which are already capable of being configured using various extensions and booms to carry out a wide range of applications.
With this new Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom, the versatility of the E-series expands beyond demolition into transporting equipment to sites. The excavators can be configured into a safe carrier for the lifting of machine components, such as cradles and digging or high reach booms, from the trailer to the ground, at which point they can be safely installed on the machine.
“The advantage is that not only is total cost of ownership reduced, by eliminating the need for a mobile crane or second excavator, but flexibility is increased thanks to the time savings created by no longer needing a third party for loading and unloading. Carbon is also reduced due to the need for less vehicles on site,” Volvo CE special application solutions manager for demolition, recycling and excavator modifications for sales region Europe and international Martijn Donkersloot says.
The machine software handles the controlled lifting of equipment, providing visual warnings outside of the cab to warn bystanders that a lifting process is underway. The software also controls hydraulic pressure as well as engine speed to control the movement speed of the machine as it lifts.
Take two EXCAVATORS
Takeuchi has announced the US release of its TB20e electric compact excavator and TB350R short tail swing compact excavator
The TB20e is powered by lithium-ion battery that offers a continuous working range from four to eight hours, depending on application and environment. The excavator features an on-board charger with 95v to 265v single-phase power.
When operators require additional runtime, they can tether the TB20e to the onboard charger and remain operational. A faster, optional off-board charger can charge the TB20e in just two to four hours using 408v to 552v three-phase power. An emergency switch located on the seat riser prevents the machine from operating or charging when activated.
The TB20e has an operating weight of 4,255 lbs. (1.9 tonnes) and features a standard long arm with integrated thumb mount. It has a maximum dig depth of 7’10” (2.38m) and a maximum reach of 13’4” (4.06m). A primary hydraulic circuit plumbed to midarm delivers nine gallons per minute (34LPM) for running a hydraulic hammer or other hydraulicallydriven attachments.
The Takeuchi Fleet Management telematics system comes standard on the TB20e, reducing downtime and controlling costs by providing remote diagnostics and scheduled
maintenance reminders along with customisable alert settings. It also supplies owners and operators with valuable information about machine health, run time and location.
The TB350R is a diesel addition to Takeuchi’s TB3000 Series line and is the company’s first short tail swing model in its five-ton class.
The TB350R weighs 10,980 lb. (4.98 tonnes) in canopy configuration and 11,235 lb. (5.09 tonnes) when equipped with a cab. The Kubota V2607-CR-E5B diesel engine delivers 41.7hp (31kW) and more than 130.2 lb-ft (176.5Nm) of torque. A four-pump hydraulic system delivers smooth control of the work equipment. The TB350R provides a bucket breakout force of 10,431 lb. (4.7 tonnes), a traction force of 12,320 lb. (5.6 tonnes) , and a maximum dig depth of 11’ 8.8” (3.57m).
Both canopy and cab configurations are equipped with a primary auxiliary circuit plumbed to mid-arm. The cab model also includes a dedicated coupler circuit operated by controls located inside the cab.
Takeuchi machinery is distributed in Australia by Semco.
Funding shortfall
The Australian government says that 800 land transport infrastructure projects currently in the pipeline are under review after some projects were left without adequate funding or resources.
It says that other projects were approved that don’t have benefits to the public and that the high number of projects in the pipeline have caused delays and overruns.
The government says that the review will allow for reprioritisation and an assessment of each project’s deliverability, though it reiterates its commitment to completing projects already under construction.
“A properly functioning infrastructure investment pipeline means projects can be delivered with more confidence about timeframes and budgets,” Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King says.
“Easing the pressure on the construction sector will help drive inflation lower and deliver more predictable investment and delivery outcomes from governments.
“Communities will benefit from national significant infrastructure with shorter and safer travel, more liveable cities, suburbs and regions, while the economy benefits from
the certainty brought by a smoother delivery of investment matched to project timelines.
“Importantly for industry, projects under construction will proceed and we have committed to maintain significant infrastructure investment for the medium term.
“It is time to clean up the mess left by the Liberals and Nationals clogging the pipeline with ‘press release projects’ – announced but unable to be delivered.
“This review will put confidence back into the investment pipeline, benefitting the states and territories and the communities we all serve.”
The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) swiftly responded to the review announcement, expressing “serious concerns” that it would result in “significant cancellations and deferrals”.
“Delivery of infrastructure is not like a tap. It can’t simply be turned on and off,” ACA CEO Jon Davies says.
“Developing teams and capabilities that are equipped to bid and deliver large projects can take years, and once assembled, it is difficult to reallocate them, particularly if there is a widespread deferral of projects.
“It is vital that industry is consulted in the review to avoid inflicting further
pain on an industry that is already doing it tough as a result of having to absorb significant rises in material and labour costs.
“If projects are cut, governments must take action to reallocate a proportion of the saved funds to help industry by compensating contractors who have incurred significant additional costs without any fault of their own and currently lack contractual relief.”
Engineers Australia, on the other hand, says it welcomes the review as it will “provide an opportunity to reduce and target investment to ensure best value for money is achieved”.
“This is critical to helping ensure spending doesn’t further fuel current economic challenges,” Engineers Australia CEO Romilly Madew says.
“Australia’s construction sector is already at breaking point, rising materials costs and labour shortages has caused budgets to blow out and project slippage.
“Over the past two years, engineering vacancies have grown by 80 per cent nationally.
A significant contributor to this increase is infrastructure projects.
“When reviewing the pipeline, it will be important to give due consideration to changing consumer behaviour and economic priorities.”
Mildura SuniTAFE has added a JCB electric mini excavator to its fleet
ELECTRIC
Top marks
A Victorian-based TAFE has become the first registered training organisation in Australia to train with an electric excavator
SuniTAFE in Mildura has received a JCB 19C-1E electric mini excavator – the world’s first working electric excavator that is completely untethered.
The JCB machine has been put to work in the Heavy Automotive department where it will be used to deliver training to apprentices.
SuniTAFE says the electric excavator will offer a new approach to machinery training, with climate change and sustainability at the forefront of the industry.
Heavy automotive and auto electrical teacher Will Sharpe says the new machine will benefit students in the future of zeroemissions equipment.
“We now have a great advantage for our students to get a step up on the ever-evolving world of technology,” Sharpe says.
“This will allow our heavy vehicle apprentices and auto electricians to grasp a greater understanding about all related electric vehicle components.
“The excavator will also be used in hydraulics training as it is equipped with some of the most current hydraulic components and allows for a range of tests to be carried out.
“Mildura is a hub for heavy vehicle mechanics in road transport, agricultural mechanics and mobile plant technicians. By adding the JCB to our training we are guiding the next generation of technicians to have a better understanding of zero-emission technology and electric vehicles.”

Inflation impact
Australia’s construction industry
Australian Constructors Association (ACA) CEO Jon Davies says that every contractor surveyed for the latest ACA-Arcadis construction industry market sentiment report said they had needed to absorb material price escalation in 2022 that could not be recovered or offset.
“Some contractors are hurting more than others, with nearly half of the respondents stating that the unrecovered cost increases amounted to more than 10 per cent of their project budgets, which could result in losses of many millions of dollars,” Davies says.
“Despite some improvement since the last survey, a significant 76 per cent of respondents believe that the current commercial environment still unfairly and unreasonably allocates risk between clients and contractors.
“Risk allocation has been identified as the most significant barrier to innovation and productivity growth in the industry and, to put this into perspective, the industry’s productivity performance is at a 30-year low.”
While the report indicates material price inflation is beginning to moderate, the cost of labour is starting to increase significantly.
Arcadis executive director – cost & commercial management Matthew Mackey says that more than half of respondents rated trade labour
Report respondents said that unrecovered cost increases amounted to more than 10 per cent of their project budgets
capacity as severely constrained compared to only 20 per cent last year.
“The industry expects that market will remain overheated in 2023, with a shortage of contractors relative to demand, and prices remaining high,” Mackey says.
“Based upon the responses received, Queensland and Western Australia are anticipated to be the hottest markets, while overall sentiment has fallen in Victoria compared to last year’s survey.
“In terms of asset classes, defence, energy and power, health, data centres and aviation are the strongest performers. Interestingly, enthusiasm for the retirement living sector has fallen since last year—with just 36 per cent of respondents indicating that this is a rising market compared to 78 per cent in 2022.
“The latest data also indicates that pricing volatility for materials has started to ease, with some respondents noting that prices have fallen for specific items. While material pricing appears to be a softening picture, this is now being offset by increasing labour costs ahead of the next round of EBA negotiations. We therefore anticipate that labour costs will become a primary driver of the next wave of construction cost inflation,” he says.
The latest construction industry market sentiment report shows that the recent inflationary crisis continues to have a severe and farreaching impact on

RECYCLING RECYCLING
Tasmanian tyres
Made from recycled tyres, Roadways says the recycled material is quieter and more durable
Over the past eight months, Roadways – Tasmania’s oldest privately-owned surfacing company – has been using rubber from recycled tyres as a road surface material across the state.
The crumb rubber material is made from end-of-life tyres, reducing tyre waste going to landfill as well as creating a more durable road surface mixture.
“The mix uses a binder containing rubber from recycled tyres from the freight industry and produces a highquality outcome,” Roadways surfacing manager Jason Smith says.
“Each tyre at the end of its life is assumed to have a useable mass of 6kg, which is approximately 167 tyres per tonne of scrap rubber.”
The crumb rubber came from Tyre Cycle, with their Somerton plant producing approximately 3,600 tonnes of rubber out of tyres collected from Tasmania.
The benefits of crumb rubber extend beyond just sustainability, Smith says, with benefits impacting engineers and civilians travelling on the road as well.
“These surfaces containing recycled rubber significantly reduce road noise and extend the life of roads by making them more durable, ultimately leading to less maintenance,” he says.
The crumb rubber contract began in October 2022 over eight sites in the south and five in the northeast of Tasmania, across a total length of 18.3 kilometres.

The Brisbane facility will recover up to 90 per cent of materials from construction and demolition waste to produce recycled construction materials
The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), an Australian-owned green bank, is committing $75 million in debt finance to develop what will be Queensland’s flagship construction and demolition (C&D) recycling facility at construction material producer Rino Recycling.
Located in Pinkenba near Brisbane Airport, the $89 million facility will have a recovery rate of more than 90 per cent, producing recycled products for reuse.
The new integrated plant – one of Australia’s largest for throughput volume under one roof – will be able to process more than one million tonnes of C&D waste annually, including concrete, excavation material, vacuum waste and skip bin waste, diverting a significant amount of valuable resources from landfill.
“This investment helps provide a solution to Australia’s growing waste stream and accelerates our transition to a circular economy by deploying best-in-class technology to further develop our recycling sector,” CEFC CEO Ian Learmonth says.
“It offers an opportunity to deliver important infrastructure to Queensland and comes at a critical time for Brisbane, with the city on the

“Brisbane is expected to continue the trend in significant population growth over the next 20 years, in addition to the construction requirements of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games,” Rino Recycling director Todd Pepper says.
“The city has a significant pipeline of infrastructure development, including expansion of the Brisbane Airport and the development of the Brisbane city region in the SEQ ‘City deal’. The potential for recycling building material in these construction projects is very large, and it’s great to be working with the CEFC to help establish this plant and contribute to a more sustainable Olympics.”
Rino Recycling general manager Daniel Blaser adds: “What is unique about this plant is that it is fully automated and able to handle many and various waste streams through the plant efficiently, separating the products effectively and creating valuable outputs without the need to rehandle or reprocess.”

MINING
Safety zone
AutoMine Flexible Safety Zone enables autonomous mining equipment to work in variable work zones with manually operated equipment
Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions has released the AutoMine Flexible Safety Zone feature for its AutoMine underground system for autonomous mining operations.
With the AutoMine Flexible Safety Zone, autonomous mining equipment can operate continuously in the automated area while allowing for intersections with manual equipment. This capability makes it possible for manual equipment to cross automated equipment routes and share dump or load points. In addition, AutoMine access barriers inform operators of the shared area status with visual and audible indications.
“Our new technology will increase the flexibility between manual and automated equipment by allowing manual operators to request access to a shared area,” Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions product line manager automation Jouni Koppanen says.
“This request is designed to prevent automated equipment from entering the shared area while manual equipment occupies it. In addition, this flexibility will further enhance customer productivity and allow for continuous operation of both automated and manual equipment.” Manual operators can request access to a shared area. Once autonomous vehicles have cleared the area, access is granted and manual vehicles can enter safely. This procedure ensures safety while allowing for more flexible setups.
“This new feature will enhance our customers’ AutoMine operations,” Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions director global product line and projects automation Elen Toodu says.
“We are giving operators the tools they need to adapt to changing conditions, which will ultimately improve productivity and safety in their mines.”

Western Australia has announced funding of $47.6 million in an effort to accelerate residential construction
WA’s latest Budget announcement includes a range of new initiatives to ramp up local training and attraction of skilled workers from overseas to further expand its residential construction workforce — in order to accelerate delivery of the current pipeline of homes as well as expand industry capacity to deliver new housing supply.
New measures in the Budget include:
• $26.9 million to increase the Base Employer Grant for all third and fourth-year apprentices by 20 per cent, from $10,000 to $12,000, to encourage local businesses to take on local workers;
• $ 4.6 million for a one-off $2,000 completion payment to encourage more apprentices to finish their training in the building industry and for school students to learn about the diverse career options in construction;
• E xpansion of the existing Group Training Organisation Wage Subsidy program to include apprentices and trainees in the residential and commercial construction industry, opening the program up to assist more small-to-medium businesses;
• $2.7 million boost in resources to expedite approvals of occupational licensing;
• $11 million for targeted visa subsidies of up to $10,000 to attract up to 1,100 skilled migrants to the building and construction sector, plus an additional $2.4 million to promote skilled migration to WA and visa advisory services; and
• temporary changes to the state sponsored visa scheme to make it easier for skilled migrants to connect with job vacancies in WA. There are also temporary changes to the State Nominated Migration Program (SNMP) and the addition of 34 in-demand construction occupations to WA’s Skilled Migration Occupation List.
“The new migration initiatives funded in our 2023-24 Budget will ensure WA remains the state of choice for skilled migrants, helping employers fill vacant jobs in the building and construction sector,” WA Training Minister Simone McGurk says.
“But we are not losing sight of the importance of training local workers – the expansion of the Group Training Organisation Wage Subsidy program to the residential construction sector will help to attract more construction apprentices and trainees to this in-demand industry.”

Smartphones could one day become portable quantum sensors thanks to a new chip-scale approach that uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to image magnetic fields, the University of New South Wales has announced. Researchers found that OLEDs, a type of semiconductor material commonly found in smartphone screens, can be harnessed to map magnetic fields, raising the potential for applications in industries like construction.
By integrating an OLED with a microwave resonator, the research team generated a tiny oscillating magnetic field across the OLED device, allowing each individual pixel of the OLED screen to act as a small magnetic field sensor.
This latest research represents the next step in the development of magnetic field imaging equipment, they say. Existing quantum sensing and magnetic field imaging equipment tends to be large and expensive, requiring either additional power from a high-powered laser, or extremely low temperatures. Under these conditions, the device integration potential and commercial scalability is limited.
However, the new technique developed by the team can function at a microchip scale and doesn’t require input from a laser, showing great potential for applications in scientific research, industry and medicine.
“Next, we hope to improve the overall performance of the device including optimising the device architecture and exploring other techniques that can significantly increase the field sensitivity,” says Dr Rugang Geng, one of the lead investigators.
“We are also exploring collaborations with OLED technology companies as their experience at moving devices from the lab to commercial products will help accelerate translation of this technology.”
CARBON
The research could pave the way for the development of carbon-neutral concrete
Carbon capture
New additives could turn concrete into a carbon sink by simply adding baking soda to the mix
Recent discoveries by a team at MIT have revealed that introducing new materials into existing concrete manufacturing processes could significantly reduce its carbon footprint, without altering concrete’s bulk mechanical properties.
Although concrete naturally absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, when carbonisation occurs, mainly within cured concrete, they can both weaken the material and lower the internal alkalinity, which accelerates the corrosion of the reinforcing rebar.
However, the new carbon dioxide sequestration pathways discovered by the MIT team rely on the very early formation of carbonates during concrete mixing and pouring, before the material sets, which might largely eliminate the detrimental effects of carbon dioxide uptake after the material cures.
The team found that by adding sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, to the mix, up to 15 per cent of the total amount of carbon dioxide associated with cement production could be mineralised during these early stages — enough to potentially make a significant dent in the material’s global carbon footprint.
“It’s all very exciting because our research advances the concept of multifunctional concrete by incorporating the added benefits of
carbon dioxide mineralisation during production and casting,” doctoral student Marcin Hajduczek says, who was involved in the research.
Furthermore, the resulting concrete sets much more quickly, meaning form works can be removed earlier, reducing the time required to complete a bridge or building.
The composite, a mix of calcium carbonate and calcium silicon hydrate, “is an entirely new material,” Hajduczek says.
“Furthermore, through its formation, we can double the mechanical performance of the early-stage concrete.”
However, he adds, this research is still an ongoing effort.
“While it is currently unclear how the formation of these new phases will impact the long-term performance of concrete, these new discoveries suggest an optimistic future for the development of carbon neutral construction materials.
“Our new discovery could further be combined with other recent innovations in the development of lower carbon footprint concrete admixtures to provide much greener, and even carbon-negative construction materials for the built environment, turning concrete from being a problem to a part of a solution.”
Mountain climb
An ECR25 Electric compact excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is helping to rebuild one of the longest and steepest cable car routes in the world.
Operating on the 2,970m-high Schilthorn in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland, the machine is being used on a 100 million Swiss Franc transformation program to construct a new cableway from the small village of Stechelberg at the base of the mountain to the Schilthorn summit.
For many years, the original route was the world’s longest and steepest aerial cableway, made more famous by appearing in the 1968 James Bond film, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
“We’re thrilled that the ECR25 Electric has been selected for this project,” Volvo CE utility product manager Timur Abied says.
“Not only is it a tricky location, it’s also hugely iconic. We’re used to discussing the benefits of near-silent zero emission electric machines in busy urban locations and for indoor works. But this project shows the versatility of electric to solve more problems than one might think. We’re very much looking forward to proving the power of electric machines to rise to the toughest of challenges. “
The new machine is being used by Ghelma AG Baubetriebe – the contractor responsible for the excavation and foundation work for the new summit station. Space and freezing temperatures were key considerations for choosing the electric ECR25 mini excavator.
“There are two main problems up on the mountains,” Ghelma AG Baubetriebe site manager Melchior Burlon says.
“On the one hand, we don’t have much space here, and on the other hand we often encounter problems
with diesel engines operating at altitude owing to the thin air and the cold.”
The environmental and health hazards from diesel emissions were also a concern, so the electric machine was the solution.
“Volvo CE is the only supplier that offers something of this magnitude,” Burlon says. “Otherwise, there were only excavators up to two tons and we wanted the most powerful machine for the job – and something that we could still transport via helicopter if necessary.”
Volvo CE says the cold is not proving to be an issue as the machine starts immediately, unlike its diesel counterparts, which can take up to an hour. Transport of diesel up the mountain to power the machine is also eliminated. Instead, the ECR25 Electric is charged via the Schilthorn cable car’s power supply – and if required during the project, the fast charger will also be used. The cableway draws 100 per cent of its electricity from hydropower generated in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. “The energy is available up here, and we can tap into it at any time. The other advantage is the absence of exhaust emissions, that’s great,” Burlon says.

XCMG says its autonomous machinery helps make mining safer
AUTONOMY
Autonomous solution
XCMG Machinery’s new XDR80TE-AT autonomous electric dump truck recently won an iF Design Award
The truck is equipped with multiple functions, including visual and acoustic sensors, laser radar, millimetre-wave radar and cameras.
Under the full autonomous mode, the AI technology can automatically set the destination and plan the routes following the mining operation system’s production schedule while enabling coordinated operation with other equipment regardless of automation.
XCMG’s unmanned mining solutions are building integrated digital mines where a control centre assigns tasks to the equipment and the vehicles set targets based on the task list and calculate the routes, evaluating the safety of the routes and avoiding obstacles autonomously.
“As mining sites have highly challenging working conditions that pose greater risks to people, the idea of building ‘unmanned mines’ aims to tackle the pain point,” XCMG assistant president and mining machinery general manager Cui Jisheng says.
“Leveraging advanced technologies including 5G and a digital twin, which are more developed now, our mining machinery equipment are catching up quickly to deliver unmanned solutions in the era of intelligent technologies.”

The Ravenswood Gold Mine is now the largest gold mine in Queensland after a significant expansion to the facility
A three-year expansion that included a new tailings storage facility, crusher and a processing plant expansion means that Ravenswood Gold Mine’s production has now increased to produce more than 200,000 ounces (5.7 tonnes) of gold each year.
The permanent workforce has increased to more than 430 with a further 220 permanent contractors.
Local businesses and suppliers were involved in the $350 million expansion, with concrete supplied by Towers Concrete in Charters Towers and steel from Thomas Steel in Townsville.
Located in the historic gold mining town of Ravenswood, the Ravenswood Gold Mine has been in operation since 1987 and was purchased by Ravenswood Gold in April 2020.
“Not only is this now the largest gold mine in Queensland, but the
Ravenswood Gold project also deserves a gold medal for how it supports locals and local businesses,” Resources Minister Scott Stewart says.
“It is providing good jobs, flow on benefits for local businesses and is ensuring a sustainable future for the town of Ravenswood well beyond the life of the mine.
“And all Queenslanders benefit with royalties that will fund our schools, hospitals and roads.
“The resources industry directly supports about 75,000 jobs across the state, particularly in the regions, which account for about two-thirds of all mining jobs.”

CAREERS
Pathway support
CCF Victoria’s Pathways program is now open for expressions of interest from female and First Nations participants who are interested in a career in civil construction
The Victorian-government funded Pathways program will see 120 women and First Nations participants supported on their career journey within the civil construction industry through employment preparation, placement and the completion of a RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction Apprenticeship qualification
CCF Victoria will be commencing the program in June 2023, with a ‘Buddy Program’ supporting students as they progress to work placement. The aim is to bridge knowledge and training gaps and support the entry of female and First Nations workers into the civil construction industry.
“This program is delivering solutions by creating careers, empowering employers and connecting communities,” CCF Victoria CEO Lisa Kinross says.
“It is about providing a pathway to shape a career in civil construction particularly for women and First Nations, who are underrepresented in our industry.
“The civil construction industry wants and deserves the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce. We need solutions to make this happen and our civil contractors need support during this culture transition, and this is why this program is shaping careers and reshaping our industry.”
Equality pledge
Member companies of the Australian Constructors Association have committed to a five-year set of goals for improving gender equality and flexibility in the workforce
With the aim of transforming the culture of the construction industry in order to address current workforce shortages and position the industry for the future, ACA members have agreed to a set of gender equality and work flexibility goals at the Future of Construction Summit in Melbourne.
ACA CEO Jon Davies said the pledge aims to address two significant industry issues that are known to impact on culture.
“Starting with gender equality, we commit to 75 per cent of ACA members being certified an Employer of Choice by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency [WGEA] within five years,” he says.
“As the most male-dominated industry in Australia, and with the widest pay gap of any, this is an ambitious target that will promote gender equality and greater diversity and inclusion.
“To further raise the bar industrywide, the second target area is workplace flexibility.
“ACA members will mandate flexible work plans for employees on every project, both office and
site roles, in a move to address the long hours, high stress and poor work-life balance that characterises the industry.
“Whilst other international jurisdictions are moving to legislate flexible working options, ACA members are not waiting for the Australian government to follow suit.”
With major workforce shortages currently hindering growth, the ACA has further pledged to rebrand the industry and attract more workers.
“Construction is a varied and exciting industry that solves complex challenges every day,” Davies says.
“There are opportunities for everyone and we will be lifting the curtain on those opportunities and promoting them.
“Today’s announcement is a bottom-up approach that does not require anything of anyone other than ACA members.”

Develon’s new DX62R-7 and DX63-7 six-tonne mini excavators have been released in Europe as part of the rebranded company’s next generation of machines.
Together, the pair of mini excavators are ideal for working in confined spaces in construction such as landscaping, utilities, rental, agriculture, recycling, waste and urban developments around existing buildings and infrastructure.
New to the excavators is Develon’s load sensing system, which is built around a main control valve that results in a longer spool stroke. This improves controllability and performance compared to previous Develon/Doosan models in the same class. The new loading system results in a reduction of energy wastage – as much as 30 per cent.
Both excavators are powered by a 59.4 horsepower (44.3kW) engine that offers eight per cent more torque and a seven per cent improvement on fuel consumption. The DX62R-7 and DX63-7 boast a high hydraulic auxiliary flow rate (90L/min) to enhance attachment work, which can be monitored via the smart eight-inch touchscreen and thumbwheel control.
Operators can also select between
low and high speed for the new blade hydraulics via the dozer level control. The dozer control also provides a new blade floating function – pushing the dozer lever all the way forward puts the lever into the detent position and leaves the dozer blade in a ‘float’ position.
Develon also recently announced the release of its Next-Gen 7 Series excavator to the North American market.
The new DX1000LC-7 is a 100tonne machine that has been designed for pit and quarry applications as well as large earthmoving and excavating construction projects.
The machine boasts a bucket capacity of 5.4 cubic metres and a bucket breakout force of 40-tonnes. A crossed-design swing bearing distributes stress across the machine to ensure longevity of the excavator and maintain uptime. Similarly, wear points on the DX10000LC-7 have been reinforced to boost reliability.
The excavator also includes a heavyduty front design with additional reinforcement on key stress points to ensure uptime protection.
Develon director of product management Thomas Lee says the DX10000LC-7 features different
settings such as swing priority mode for bank cutting when the swing angle is large to increase swing speed. A boom-up function is prioritised when the swint priority is turned off.
“The new DX1000LC-7 excavator has the highest swing torque in its size class,” Lee says.
“This is especially important for aggregate producers when they routinely turn or rotate the excavator’s upper structure to move rocks and other material.”

Cream of the Crop
The Bobcat brand is moving onto lighting rigs, forklifts, air compressors and mobile generators as the company expands and diversifies its product offering.
Doosan brand air compressors, mobile generators, lighting rigs and material handling equipment will be rebranded Bobcat under a new company strategy.
Doosan Bobcat chief executive Scott Park says the Doosan Portable Power (DPP) and Doosan Industrial Vehicle (DIV) product lines will rebrand the products in order to create new business and growth opportunities.
“Doosan Portable Power and Doosan Industrial Vehicle have long legacies of developing high-quality products,” he says.
“Bringing these strong Doosan brands into the Bobcat portfolio allows us to further expand these business lines, while also growing our overall Doosan Bobcat business and providing even more solutions to help our customers accomplish more.”
Bobcat has broadened its product
portfolio significantly within the past five years, expanding product lines like grounds maintenance equipment, which includes compact tractors, small articulated loaders, mowers and turf equipment.
The company says the rebranding of the portable power and industrial vehicle equipment lines will create a cohesive customer experience and grow the organisation’s footprint, thus making the brand accessible to more customers and in more places.
Bobcat-branded forklifts and power products were displayed at major trade events in March, with a wider roll-out of the products expected later this year. The company says that the product lines will also undergo a few design and aesthetic changes in line with Bobcat’s current branding.
Champion stays on
The Champion Compressors (Australia) and Sullair brands will remain in use, despite a name change of the parent entity
Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems (HIES) has launched a new entity, Hitachi Global Air Power, that will bring its global compressed air subsidiaries – including Champion and Sullair – together into one business.
While Sullair will change its corporate name, the branding and distinctive colours will remain intact on its products, including Sullair, Champion and Air-One.
Hitachi says customers and distributors will recognise the Sullair logo and the green of their machines, continuing after it acquried the US company in 2017.
“The company name change from Sullair to Hitachi Global Air Power is only the latest move in a growing list of Hitachi’s commitments to our business and brand,” Sullair CEO John Randall says.
“Since our acquisition, Hitachi has invested more than $45 million in our company, and Hitachi has been instrumental in allowing us to expand our calibre and capabilities. We are excited about the opportunities ahead of us—for our business, employees, customers, channel partners and communities.”
Hitachi Global Air Power will continue to offer a full range of integrated compressed air solutions, including portable air compressors, industrial air compressors (oil-free and oil-flooded), aftermarket original manufacturer parts, fluids and more.
But it will also be used to help seed up the adoption of green (sustainable) and digital products and solutions to help customers save more energy and be more efficient.
HIES president and chief executive Yasuhiro Takeuchi says the new body will more clearly demonstrate the breadth of its product portfolio.
“In today’s relentlessly transforming society, Hitachi Global Air Power is uniquely positioned to raise the bar on the value we deliver to customers through our comprehensive portfolio of compressed air products and solutions such as Air as a Service,” he says.
