New launch

New Holland has expanded its compact loader offering with the largest model yet – the seven-tonne C362 Super Boom.

Launched in the US in 2021, the C362 has finally reached Australia, gracing New Holland’s stand at AgQuip in NSW in August.

“It’s New Holland’s biggest track loader and It borrows a lot from the from the small dozers,” New Holland Construction product manager Jim Pike says.

“It’s somewhat of a hybrid between your traditional track loader and a small dozer.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from customers who have old dozers on their farm and see this as something that can replace that and give them the versatility of a track loader with the pushing power of a small dozer.

“We think it’s got a pretty bright future.”

The C362 has 114 horsepower

(85kW) at 2,500rpm and peak torque of 460Nm at 1,400rpm.

It has a 2,811kg-rated operating load at 50 per cent capacity and breakout forces of 5,481kg and 5,855kg on the lift and bucket cylinders respectively.

It is fitted with rubber tracks as standard, but also has a steel track option, which Pike says particularly

appeals to customers already running small dozers.

Another standout feature, Pike says, is the Super Boom vertical lift, which offers increased height and reach.

The LDR bucket can also be useful for contractors to help them locate and avoid underground utilities as part of excavation works.

RodRadar says that its LDR technology improves operator safety and reduces costs by modernising construction’s approach to excavation with its ground penetrating radar system.

Pro Civil Works, based in Sydney, is now using the LDR bucket in Bondi to locate underground electrical services in order to safely excavate and repair the lines.

Users get real-time alerts and high resolution data as they scan the surface of a site, with the radar located inside the excavator bucket on a machine. This means that a fresh scan is made with every pass of the bucket, identifying targets that are in close proximity to the excavator, and it can be used on all utility types.

, Israeli manufacturer RodRadar has supplied its first unit to an Australian customer with the delivery of its Live Dig Radar (LDR) bucket.

Foton has released its new electric tipper onto the Australian market, saying that its 3,500kg braked towing capacity makes it a practical alternative for municipalities, landscape companies, infrastructure support, construction specialists and more.

Another strength of the package is its adaptability, with the model available with a rated GVM of 4,500kg for car licence operation, or 6,000kg for light rigid licenced drivers, with either option allowing for towing.

“From a financial standpoint, it makes a lot of sense, as the model allows for a genuinely affordable entry into the EV tipper market, with 20 per cent lower upfront and operational expenditure costs.

“While Foton Mobility Distribution’s EV truck offering is new to Australia, it comes with impressive credentials from markets around the globe.”

Outside of the tipper application, the Foton T5 EV can be configured for various applications. DC fast charging allows for full recharging in 1.5 hours, or the standard 11kW AC onboard charger can fully recharge the drive battery in just 7.2 hours, allowing for overnight turnarounds.

The T5 EV has a fully loaded range of 180km, while also offering a full safety suite, including a LowSpeed Pedestrian Warning System, a comprehensive electronic braking and stability support package, dual SRS airbags, as well as reversing radar and buzzer.

Kaeser Compressors releases new rotary screw compressors

Energy efficient

Rotary screw compressors are the dependable backbone of any industrial compressed air supply. With a multitude of features, the new CSD/CSDX range from Kaeser Compressors fulfils this role more efficiently, dependably and economically than ever before.

This ‘.6’ iteration of the CSD/CSDX series uses highly efficient speed-controlled (IE5) or fixed-speed (IE4) drives. The centrepiece of all compressors in this series is the rotary screw airend with flow-optimised Sigma Profile rotors, specially developed for this range.

These and other improvements, such as speed-controlled fan motors, have enabled the energy efficiency of the compressor system to be enhanced, which has significantly reduced energy consumption.

Featuring motors with power from 45 to 90kW, models from this series can cover delivery volumes from 8.4 to 19.4 cubic metres/ min and are designed for pressures up to 15 bar. Particularly at low pressures, even higher delivery volumes can be achieved.

The environmentally friendly system design even extends to the fluid filter elements, which are metal-free and after use can simply be thermally disposed of.

In addition to the standard versions, versions with an add-on refrigeration dryer module are available, which permit both compressed air generation and drying in a comparatively small space. The refrigeration dryer is dimensioned for high ambient temperatures and operates with very little pressure loss. In comparison to the previous version, energy consumption has been reduced significantly, whilst the required refrigerant charge is around 25 per cent lower.

The CSD.6 and CSDX.6 are both available with variable speed control. As with the standard systems, these versions are designed for optimised cost-efficiency, operational reliability and maintenance-friendliness.

Kaeser rotary screw compressors are produced in Germany to strict quality standards and requirements and a high level of durability means they can serve a company for many decades to come.

Caterpillar says its new Cat 988 GC wheel loader, available in Australia, has been designed to allow its customers to move more material at a lower cost per hour - with a five per cent drop in fuel consumption and up to 15 per cent lower maintenance costs compared to the Cat 988K.

Designed for moderate production applications up to 2,000 hours per year, the new 50.8 tonne operating weight 988 GC is optimised as a 45-tonne truck match loader.

Its 3,909mm dump clearance delivers efficient loading up to the Cat 775G truck. With bucket payload matched to the 988K, the new 988 GC offers up to 670 tonnes/ hour productivity in shot rock truck loading applications and up to 527 tonnes/hour for loadand-carry operations.

Updates

The front frame has been redesigned to withstand larger loads and the loader features a new lift arm design.

Powered by a 449 horsepower (335kW) Cat C15 engine, the 988 GC has 338.6kN of breakout force.

The cooling package achieves higher heat rejection with an ondemand fan strategy and two available fan speed settings for standard and high-ambienttemperature configurations.

Designed specifically for quarry and mining applications, the Cat Advanced Power Electronic Control Strategy (APECS) transmission offers smooth shifting, productivity and efficiency improvements and a long life, Caterpillar says.

Forward momentum and torque are maintained when shifting for greater momentum on grades.

Load sensing hydraulics direct hydraulic flow to implement and steering systems only when needed to optimise the performance and efficiency of the new 988 GC.

Beneficial for load-and-carry applications, the optional ride control adds an auxiliary accumulator to the lift circuit for a smoother ride.

Operation

Steering and Integrated Control (STIC) steering achieves up to 47 per cent quieter operation, Caterpillar says, while the Cat Comfort Series III seat with a seat-mounted implement pod that moves with the seat enhances comfort and reduces operator fatigue.

Machine vibration feedback to the operator is reduced using cab isolation mounts and seat air suspension, and an optional air cooled and heated seat is available.

Helping to monitor, manage and enhance jobsite operations, Product Link offers wireless access to operating data for insight into how the machine is operating. Standard rear Cat vision enhances visibility behind the 988 GC and it can be equipped with Cat Detect technology for collision avoidance.

Optional Cat Payload provides on-the-go weighing for materials hauled and loaded. An optional Advanced Productivity subscription provides comprehensive actionable information to help manage and improve operational productivity and profitability.

Reduced maintenance

Caterpillar says the new loader’s design includes features to increase machine uptime and reduce maintenance costs by up to 15 per cent compared to the 988K. Advanced filtration extends performance and reliability of the hydraulic system. Ground level or platform access to grouped service points delivers convenient servicing and access doors are located on both sides of the engine compartment. Ground level grease points and level sight gauges simplify daily greasing and oil level checks.

Its on-board diagnostics alerts the operator of machine issues so that problems can be resolved before failure. Information captured by Product Link can be remotely monitored via my.cat.com, the Cat app or VisionLink.

In any excavating context, operators have to be aware of what’s around them and ensure they don’t accidentally hit another machine or object, but for Melbourne’s Multipipe every job is a complex operation involving multiple hazards.

Specialising in power and telecommunications, Multipipe has been involved in major projects across Melbourne, often in dense urban environments where service pipes, overhead wires, restricted access locations and street furniture present a range of operational challenges.

To handle the space limitations, but still bring enough digging power to get the job done, Multipipe has over the past 18 months brought in a range of five Sunward mini excavators from authorised Victorian dealer Lynfield Mini X.

With two 3.5-tonne SWE 35UFs, a six-tonne SWE 60UF, nine-tonne SWE 90UF and a 15.5-tonne SWE 155UF, Multipipe operations manager Brodie Dale sums them up as being: “User-friendly, good quality and value for money.

“All the guys love them.”

Specialised work

Established in 1996, Multipipe is one of only a handful of companies in Melbourne that operates in the commercial power space –undertaking open cut excavation, directional drilling, hydro excavation services, cable hauling and traffic management services at major project sites across the city.

Managing director and owner Scott Dale lists an impressive range of clients including Telstra, Yarra Trams, power companies Zinfra/ Jemena, Powercor and CitiPower, Service Stream and real estate giant CBRE.

“We’ve worked on a few of Victoria’s Big Builds,” he says.

“We were the first company to turn soil on the Anzac underground railway project for Telstra and we are currently tendering to going back there again to relocate the assets back to where they were now that the Anzac Station has been completed; relocating the conduits out of the Shrine of Remembrance.

“We’ve done about 80 per cent of the Docklands’ power and comms

lines and did the last upgrade for the Melbourne Tennis Centre and Royal Children’s Hospital.

“It’s high-density city work that we specialise in. We’ve done everything from overhead power lines to underground projects over the years, things like streetscape works and shopping centres. We work in complex areas where there are a lot of stakeholders to deal with, as well as the general public.”

Having learnt his trade at various government-owned utility companies, with the move towards privatisation Scott decided to set up his own business in the ’90s alongside his wife, Ann. After 27 years Brodie is now taking over the reins, and Multipipe’s long-standing relationship with Lynfield Mini X is continuing to flourish.

“We’ve been buying machinery from them from the beginning,” Scott says, “and we’ve purchased every piece of equipment that they supply.

service and backup, and have a good relationship. They do a bit of backgrounding on the machines and won’t recommend something if they feel it’s not appropriate for our type of work.”

On the ground

Currently, the nine-tonne SWE 90UF and 15.5-tonne SWE 155UF are undertaking a power project for Jemena in the north Melbourne suburb of Fairfield, while one 3.5tonne SWE 35UF is on a Telstra project at the Arts Centre, Melbourne, as part of a $1.2 billion redevelopment of the precinct.

“A recent project we had one of the 3.5-tonners working on was digging the exit holes at the Marvel Stadium,” Scott says.

“We had to get lowered into the basement with a boring machine to drill under all the assets, the sewer and the train tracks, and we dug the exit hole with the Sunward digger. That was a pretty complex project.”

When asked how the Sunward machines are suited for the type of work Multipipe carries out, Scott and Brodie say the zero-swing nature of the mini excavators is very important for risk management on these sites.

“You’ve got no-go zones overhead and underground, you’ve got to monitor the gas mains and other utilities,” Scott says.

“There’s a lot of paperwork involved in getting the permits in place to dig around those zones. They’re all on rubber tracks as well so they don’t damage the bitumen. All of our work’s on hardstand –we very seldom get into a paddock environment.”

Brodie adds that the Sunward excavators have been well received by his crew, with the SWE 35UF being a particular stand-out for him due to its powerful operation for such a compact unit.

“The Sunwards as well are very user friendly,” Brodie says.

“There’s excellent vision out of the windows and the new 15.5-tonner comes with a heap of cameras that

show you nearly every angle that you need at the touch of a button.

“We’ve had no maintenance issues at all. Just a bit of servicing and greasing – that’s all you’ve got to do with them.”

Scott says value for money always a main priority when buying new machinery and the build quality of the Sunward mini excavators had stood out. So much so that he’s recommended them to other contractors.

“We’ve had a few calls from interested parties and I rate the Sunwards highly,” Scott says.

“We’ve even had a couple of builders, doing retaining wall-type stuff, looking at the 3.5-tonners. For their size, they’re very good value for money. One or two of the machines would be over 1,000 hours now and there haven’t been any maintenance issues at all.

“Money is important, but you have to have the afterservice as well, which is where Lynfield

comes in. There’s a lot of trust in the relationship going both ways and we’ve been working together for nearly 30 years.

“The aftersales service is great. Now that they’re getting a service crew team together that will be another step up – they’ll come to us to do the service.”

With a whole range of major construction projects under way across the city, work shows no signs of slowing down, so plans for several more SWE 35UFs and a SWE 60UF are on the books.

“There are a few massive projects out there at the moment – one build being for a Microsoft data centre,” Scott says.

“They need double the power that Melbourne Airport uses –it’s incredible.”

What makes a good truck? Strength?

Longevity? The answer: time – and Rokbak has spent it perfecting a tried and tested method for mechanical success.

Many would know of the hauler manufacturer from its earlier incarnation as Terex Trucks, which was bought by Volvo Group in 2014, heralding a new era for the brand.

This proved to be a mutually beneficial choice for both Volvo Group and Terex Trucks – Volvo expanded its market and Terex Trucks gained access to a higher level of support, finance and parts to assist its customer base.

To further boost support for Australian customers, Volvo Group established a distribution agreement with Porter Group in 2017, ahead of the rebrand to Rokbak a few years later in 2021. Now, Porter Group supplies Rokbak RA30 and RA40 articulated haulers across Australia.

Building the brand

Rokbak continues to manufacture its haulers in the Scottish town of

Motherwell, having designed and produced its first articulated truck at this facility back in 1982, distributing them globally for use in the mining and earthmoving industries.

“Years ago, we became a member of the Volvo Group, which allowed us to make major improvements in every part of our business,” Rokbak managing director Paul Douglas says.

“Millions of pounds have been invested in improving our products, modernising our facilities, expanding our network and developing our people – it has been a process of continual evolution.”

Rokbak’s Perth-based Australian regional business manager Lee Irving’s enthusiasm for the company is palpable as he speaks with Earthmovers & Excavators about Rokbak’s evolution.

“Still to this day, our articulated truck is known as strong, hardworking, easy to operate and easy to maintain – that has been the reputation for many years,” Irving says.

With the RA30 and RA40 haulers

having debuted to the Australian market in 2021, Irving proudly says that the two machines have adapted well to industry demands over the past two years.

“The good thing about the trucks is we have a lot of them working in a wide variety of climates – like the muggy heat in Australia and Indonesia and freezing mountains of Canada – so these machines are tested in all types of extreme, rugged landscapes,” Irving says.

Smaller in stature and primarily used in quarries, but also including infrastructure developments to commercial construction projects, the RA30 has a maximum payload of 28 tonnes, a heaped capacity of 17.5 cubic metres and 370 horsepower (276kW) from a Scania DC9 engine.

The RA40 has a gross power of 444hp (331kW) from its Scania DC13 engine, a maximum payload of 38 tonnes and a heaped capacity of 23 cubic metres.

the Stage V option is also available, with both engine types HVO approved.

“Fuel burn is a very good selling point for us,” Irving says.

“With the cost of fuel these days, fuel burn can cost upwards of 60 per cent of most operational costs, so fuel efficiency is very important for us and for our customers.

“These trucks are well-built and designed to withstand just about anything.”

Customer focus

With all this talk of power and efficiency, another aspect that most industry professionals look for in a good truck is operator comfort. Irving says that having great air con and a low-noise and low-vibration environment is key to productivity and Rokbak often takes on market feedback..

“With the investment received from Volvo Group, the trucks today are based on surveys we’ve done to improve the product. We speak to dealers, customers and the operators to understand what they like and what they don’t like.”

Another addition to improve the total cost of ownership is Rokbak’s own telematics system, the AEMP compatible Haul Track. Haul Track allows users to monitor operating costs by transmitting real-time machine data to fleet supervisors and owners.

The telematics system offers information that “allows the site supervisor to analyse data and make it easier,” Irving says.

Haul Track offers information on machine hours worked, engine speed and idle time, monitoring of machine systems, temperatures and pressures, fuel consumption, system fault code alerts, machine location and productivity.

“You can also use Haul Track for safety,” Irving adds.

“You can see the speeds that the operators are using the machines at, you can also see where the truck is going on the job site, or even if it’s been taken off-site. It also lets you know when servicing is required on the vehicles.

“It really gives peace of mind and all the information you’ll need on the trucks.”

Australia-based support

Women in Industry

In the first of what will be a series of features focusing on the career paths of women working in different aspects of the construction industry, Earthmovers & Excavators spoke with one of the few women in the country working in what can be an overlooked area of the industry – demolition.

Moira Linton, who runs Melbourne Wide Demolition alongside business partner Joanne Ramselaar, as well as family business BMC Demolition, is a passionate advocate for both women working in construction as well as the demolition side of the industry in general.

For Linton, it was incidental exposure to the industry through her work as an executive assistant at the Victorian state government’s Linking Melbourne Authority that provided her first experience of the construction world.

The now-defunct Authority oversaw the EastLink and Peninsula Link Road construction projects east of Melbourne. As part of her job, Linton would go on site visits and watch the machinery at work, amazed at the scale and skill shown.

“So that’s how I started off, going: ‘Oh, jeez, I like these big diggers!’” she laughs 13 years later, having swapped the office for a fleet of her own diggers.

“Doing those site visits and seeing the progress from John Holland and what was Leighton Contractors at that time just amazed me. I thought ‘Oh, my God, this is exciting.’

“And then I met my husband, who was an excavator operator starting to get into demolition, and I began doing the office work for him because he wasn’t au fait with all of that.”

Career change

Eventually the pull of demolition led Linton to consider a new career running a business, but there was a small hitch – Australia didn’t have the training available that she was looking for.

“I decided to go over to Washington DC to learn about how to estimate for demolition, because there was no course like that eight years ago in Australia,” Linton says.

“I got my demolition licence around three years ago – I think there’s only one or two females at all

that have one. Apart from us there’s been no new females coming into the industry – ours is even more male dominated than construction itself.”

With the licence in hand, Linton decided it was time to set up in business, and now runs both Melbourne Wide Demolition and BMC Demolition.

“BMC Demolition does work for clients like Winslow and BMD, and that’s my strip-out arm of demolition. With Melbourne Wide Demolition – when I when I split up from my husband, I had all this work, so I asked my friend Joanne to join me.

“She does all the permits and office work so I can get out on site, supervise the guys and jump in the truck if needed – I love doing that.”

Challenges in construction

Melbourne Wide Demolition, which specialises in small to medium-scale demolition work of structures up to three storeys high, has been making a name for itself across Melbourne metro. So much so, it was awarded the winner of the Trade & Construction Small category at last year’s Wyndham Business Awards.

“We were encouraged by our local council to enter the awards,” Linton says.

“As women in demolition, they were really impressed because there are a lot of challenges we do face. I’ve been to job sites where there aren’t any women’s toilets for example. You’re starting to see them more now on the bigger sites, but they’re never unlocked.

“You never see women working on sites, though I sometimes see female truck drivers. Usually the women in our industry are architects or based in the office. The big Tier One builders are trying to get engineers out on site, but we’re not seeing women in excavators unfortunately.”

Linton believes that this is mostly down to a lack of education at the school level of what career

opportunities there are in trades, particularly for young women. As she herself experienced when moving into the world of work – the option of working in construction just never occurred to her.

“If education starts at the grassroots level, that would have given me a bit more insight about where I wanted to go,” she says. “I would have loved to have done a trade and started my own business earlier.”

As well as a lack of education about careers in construction for those just starting out, Linton says that because so few women are seen in leadership roles in the industry, this means women looking to change careers also don’t see it as a viable option.

“There is a stigma around being a woman in the industry,” she says.

“I’ll call a client to quote for a demolition and their reply is: ‘Can I speak to you the owner or your husband?’ They’re shocked when they find out I am one of the owners and the demolition licence is mine.”

However, Linton says that she is seeing a gradual shift towards greater acceptance of women in construction over time.

“It’s very slow, but the younger generation are more likely to say: ‘That’s great – good on you for giving it a go.’ We need more grants and sponsorship of women looking at getting into construction as well encouraging kids in high school to do this kind of career to push this further.”

Passion for quality

For Linton, she says the passion she feels for the demolition industry and running her own business is a mixture of helping guide clients through a project, experiencing the wide variety of different project types that can be undertaken and seeing the skill

“I love going to site and seeing a building come down,” she says.

“It’s amazing how skilful the guys are on the excavators – they can just pluck one brick at a time if needed.

“Every site has its own challenges. Sometimes you need tiger tails if you’re near electrical wires, you might need scaffolding or hoarding. There’s Regulation 116, making sure there’s protection for the public. Sometimes it can take longer to do the paperwork than the demo itself!”

However, she adds, these challenges just serve to motivate her to achieve the best she can for her clients.

“I’ve always been very passionate about my work, but when you have your own business, the drive is even stronger. Your business really is all about your values and morals. It’s all about relationships, not money.”

As for encouraging more women to join the industry, Linton says NAWIC is great resource to connect with women already working in construction and companies who may be willing to offer work experience to those thinking of a career change but not knowing where to start.

“What I’m seeing are women who are older saying that they didn’t know that the opportunities were there when they were younger, but working in construction is something that they would love to do. But, they’re worried that their age will be an issue, or the stigma of being a woman in this industry and they don’t go for it. It’s disappointing, which is why we’re trying to show that there are successful women in this business and it can be done.

“I’m seeing that idea gain more traction, which is great – we just need to find a way to get this information outside of our industry as well to encourage more women to get involved.”

Family construction business R Slater & Sons Civil (RSS Civil), based in Colac, two hours southwest of Melbourne, recently made its first purchase from Porter Group –a Bergmann C815s dump truck.

The feedback from its operators is that it’s been like “night and day” compared to the old dumpers used.

Currently at work on a monthslong water pipeline project taking place alongside a busy road, the dumper’s comfort, driver visibility and ability to swivel-tip have been standout features for RSS Civil owner Adam Slater, even in the short period of time it has been on site.

“I’ve had a few people who have seen photos we’ve posted up on our Facebook page ask questions about what it’s been like,” Slater says.

“For anybody looking to buy one, I recommend that they have a look as it’s definitely suited us for the work that we do.”

Enduring legacy

RSS Civil’s history goes all the way back to 1948, when Reginald Slater began a road construction business in Colac. Now, 75 years later, RSS Civil has continued to evolve to meet the demands of the market.

“It’s a fourth-generation business, with myself and my brother being a part of the business that originally started with my great grandfather,” Slater explains.

“It first started with road construction works and evolved into drainage, subdivisions and water mains, so now we cover all aspects of civil construction.”

Asked what the family’s secret to success has been, Slater says that the business’ specialisation in water infrastructure and subdivisions has allowed it to flourish within this niche.

The new Bergmann C815s dump truck, for example, is busy moving material on a long-term project for

Barwon Water – Victoria’s largest regional urban water corporation.

“We’re doing a 19km pipeline from Colac to supply water for Birregurra, as Barwon Water’s upgrading their system,” Slater says.

“We’ve done some other large-scale pipelines for Barwon Water and large multistage subdivisions down in Apollo Bay and in Colac.

“We predominantly operate down along the coast to Geelong, up to Ballarat and over to the Warrnambool area, in the southwest of Victoria.”

For 75 years, the company has been a family-run business, led by brothers Ian and Rick Slater for over 40 years. In 2022, Ian made the decision to

retire, paving the way for the next generation to take charge. This new leadership team includes their sister, Linda Wilson, and her husband Scott as well as Rick’s sons, Adam and Matt, and long-term employee Ricky Spokes, all working alongside Rick to continue the business.

“It’s been a successful family business for many years, and we’re hoping to continue for many more,” Slater says.

Word of mouth

With RSS Civil looking to upgrade one of its old dump trucks, Slater says that he turned to Porter Group and its new Bergmann offering as he was looking for a smaller capacity truck

that had strong aftersales backup in the region.

“We were trying to find something that suited our niche and the size of our business,” he says.

“We were looking for something that had the same smaller capacity of our old truck, but that particular brand isn’t being sold here any more and it was getting hard to find the parts.

“We found out that Porter Group had just become the exclusive distributor for these dump trucks, so we reached out to them. We also did a bit of research with other people who have these dump trucks and heard how good they were. It’s been with us for about four weeks now

and we’re really happy with it.”

It was the positive word of mouth as well as use of common componentry and strong company reputation that sealed the deal.

“We haven’t really pushed it yet to see what its capabilities are around how much we can shift with it in a day, but it’s surprised me how well it’s been going,” Slater says.

Site challenges

At the Colac to Birregurra site, the Bergmann C815s is used to transport excavated material from the roadside trench to a nearby dump site, as well as bringing back bedding and backfill. The site’s location alongside a busy road has

created access challenges for the team, but the dumper has come into its own with its ability to side-tip.

“Its versatility with its swivel dump has been very handy and makes it a lot easier for us to manoeuvre around on a site as there’s confined access,” Slater says.

“At the moment, the works are predominantly alongside a road, so we’re relegated to one lane to keep the traffic flow going. Being able to swivel and dump material in the direction that we need to without having to cross over to the other side of the road and stop traffic ticked a lot of boxes for us.”

He also says that the level of driver comfort has meant that his operators have quickly adapted to the new

machine, with feedback on the new Bergmann being that it’s like “night and day” compared to the older truck it replaced.

“The creature comforts inside the cabin make it pretty good for the guys that have to drive it,” he says.

“Just how quiet it is in the cabin means it’s made the transition really good for them.

“We’re still in the trial period just to see what it can do for us, but it’s been so far, so good. They don’t seem to complain too much when the weather’s bad outside and they’re sat inside something that’s nice and warm and comfortable,” he laughs.

to keep the truck stable when parked on uneven ground, is a key safety feature for his team.

“There’s also easy access to the all the components when you want to look in the motor and check oil, etc,” he says.

“You don’t have to climb up and over; you can just open up the doors and everything’s well laid out; that’s the best thing about it. There aren’t 1,000 buttons in there to push, everything’s pretty user friendly.”

He estimates that, depending on the flow of the work, his team can move up to 200 tonnes of material a day with the truck, adding that it’s quick and responsive.

“It moves along fairly quickly on the road, which means it doesn’t take

long to get from A to B to tip off and get back to site,” he says.

“We’ve burnt about a tank of fuel in a week, and that’s working a 60-hour week, so I’m happy with that. When it’s going, it’s going the whole time, it’s not sitting still.”

Porter Group and Bergmann Porter Group recently became the Australian distributor for Bergmann, a German manufacturer of compact, wheeled, tracked and electric dump trucks – and now has the nine-tonne Bergmann C810s, 10-tonne C912s, 12-tonne C815s and 25-tonne C828s available.

The C815s wheeled articulated 180degree swivel dumper that RSS Civil chose has a 160 horsepower (119kW) Stage V Cummins engine and six-gear ZF transmission that can be shifted both manually and automatically. With an 8 cubic metre heaped capacity and the ability to tip to either side of the machine as well as behind, the operator stand can also swivel to further increase visibility.

Slater says he has been impressed with the information and service provided by Porter Group, making the purchase a smooth process.

“Like everyone, price is very important, but our biggest thing is aftersales service and parts,” Slater says.

“So, if we’ve got issues or need parts,

knowing that these are readily available –with Porter Group being located just a few hours away in Melbourne – made it a good fit for us.

“The Bergmanns are a new addition, but Porter Group’s reputation outside of that is very positive amongst others that I’ve spoken to that have dealt with them before. It made it a no-brainer for us to go with them as well.”

With this strong start to the truck’s life with RSS Civil, Slater says that there’s clear potential there for more Bergmann dumpers to be added to the fleet, as the company refreshes its machinery to prepare for upcoming work.

“This year’s pretty full up for us with this pipeline project, which will run through till about May of next year,” Slater says.

“We’ve also got more works lined up with Barwon Water, with water main replacement works just south of Colac, as well as some local subdivision work lined up.

“Construction work down this way at the moment is doing really well, with a lot of subdivision work, as Colac is starting to take off a bit. It’s looking good for us over the next few years, which is great.”

No end in sight for infrastructure review

The duration of the federal government’s independent Strategic Review of the Infrastructure Investment Program (IIP) would suggest that after 90 days the review would be completed, and all states and territories would know which projects could proceed.

This is in fact a naïve simplification of the actual process.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King announced the 90-day review of the $120 billion 10-year IIP pipeline on May 1, 2023. This information was subsequently published in the federal Budget on May 9. King has publicly confirmed and has confirmed in-person to CCF that “the $120 billion pipeline over 10 years is safe”.

The terms of reference of the IIP review includes making recommendations for transitioning the IIP to a sustainable 10-year rolling pipeline that targets appropriately costed, nationally significant infrastructure projects, as well as assessing:

• strategies for smoothing the pipeline to manage peaks and troughs;

• whether Commonwealth-state funding arrangements are commensurate with the level of Commonwealth agency in project delivery; and

• t he merits of funding such projects through Commonwealth debt or other arrangements.

The review will also make recommendations on reforms to ongoing and terminating infrastructure investment subprograms, including such questions

as whether sub-programs are appropriate for delivering the government’s strategic priorities, including supporting safety, resilience and maintenance outcomes; and whether they could be delivered more efficiently and effectively, having regard to the constitutionality of programs.

Finally, the review will consider other relevant projects or matters as agreed in consultation with relevant jurisdictions.

Since the announcement there has been a hold on all projects that are the subject of the review, and these projects will not progress until the pipeline is finalised. It has now been 110 days since the start of the review with no conclusion in sight.

I have also been informed that, at the conclusion of the review, there will be a government sign-off process and time will need to be allowed for state agencies to consider the results.

Speaking with representatives from Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, they have not been informed of any resolution and are in the dark as to which projects they could proceed with.

Depending on the outcome of the review there would need to be a rebalancing of the program to allocate funds from projects no longer supported by the Commonwealth to other projects.

There have been recent suggestions from Commonwealth representatives that the review is also considering market capacity.

This comment is out of touch. CCF has provided the Commonwealth with a market capacity report that demonstrated prior to the review there was latent capacity in the market to deliver the program.

The review and the elongation of the time frame has created additional capacity evidenced by contractors having resources on standby for the review outcomes. As the review period continues to lengthen, I am being told that some contractors will have no option but to start laying off personnel.

This is more prevalent in regional areas where the current rolling fouryear capital program, Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP), shows a major bias to South East Queensland at the expense of regional areas.

An analysis of QTRIP shows that every district north of Wide BayBurnett, including Wide Bay-Burnett, has had reductions in their funding in favour of southern regions.

The probable outcome for these northern regions is that the timing of the review conclusion, and subsequent QTRIP finalisation, would mean delayed projects would not go to tender this side of Christmas.

If there is a wet season of any substance, profitable construction would not be able to commence until the conclusion of the wet season, which effectively amplifies the reduction of funding for these regions.

This is a terrible result for an industry that, up until the Commonwealth Budget, had line of sight on an increasing pipeline of work and has scaled to meet the challenges.

It is ironic that one of the terms of reference of the 90-day review was to assess strategies to manage peaks and troughs and the review itself has created a significant trough in many regions.

Hopefully the review produces rational conclusions that will support infrastructure development throughout all of Queensland.

We enjoyed the opportunity to see and explore the huge range of equipment in Australia’s largest showcase of construction equipment. When an ASN reached out to NAWIC with a candidate seeking a start in the industry we were pleased to be able to connect her with an earthmoving equipment manufacturer. Having now almost finished her probation, she is looking forward to starting her training at TAFE.

Over the past few months, the team at ITR Pacific has been hard at work moving its Yatala workshop into a larger facility and setting up some impressive workshop equipment, such as 250 tonne and 360 tonne track presses. This will allow customers to have their larger track chains resealed with pins and bushes rotated, ensuring maximum life out of these chains.

Hydraulic wrench track bed torque multipliers are also on hand to ensure all track bolts are correctly torqued to the required specification so track plates remain secure, especially when machines are working in tough conditions.

For large-scale earthmoving equipment, heavy-duty track beds and track winders custom-made for Australian conditions are capable of handling track chains up to 10 tonnes in weight, comfortably

Trench safety tips

Working inside a trench can pose a significant risk – so if you’re in charge of a worksite or currently working in one, make sure you know how to minimise the chance of trench collapse

Worker safety is no joke – and the risks of trench collapse are real. In the USA, 39 people died while doing trench of excavation work in 2022 – double that of 2021 –highlighting the significant risk of working in unsafe trenches and raising questions as to why such a large increase occurred.

Unfortunately it’s not uncommon to hear of construction workers becoming engulfed in material after a trench collapse, leading to serious injuries or death.

After developing specific guidance on preventing trench collapse in 2021, SafeWork SA executive director Martyn Campbell said at the time that “ground collapse is one of the primary risks which need to be controlled in excavation work as it can happen quickly and without warning, giving workers virtually no time to escape”.

Engulfment controls

In Australia, construction is the third most dangerous industry for workplace fatalities, requiring strict health and safety measures be put in place. SafeWork Australia advises trenches deeper than 1.5m are high risk work environments, requiring a Safe Work Method Statement be prepared. State-based WorkSafe authorities should also be notified well before high-risk construction work begins. However, one of the biggest misconceptions in trenching work is that risk controls are not necessary until the trench reaches that depth of 1.5m. If there is a risk of engulfment, risk controls should be in place regardless of depth.

Engulfment can be caused by multiple factors, including soil type, temperature, wet conditions and the length of time the trench wall is exposed to the environment.

If a worker is entering a trench and there is a risk of engulfment, then the following controls should be implemented:

• B attering – an intentional slope that results in self-supporting sides. When the ground is stable, the excavated slope is safe.

• Benching – a series of step-like levels cut into the vertical surface of an excavation project. This is used to safeguard against risks such as collapsing or sliding and can be done with a traditional 1:1 length to height ratio to achieve a required level of stability.

• Positive support (shoring or other comparable means) – a way to support an excavated trench by using a solution/product that braces the sides. The standard solution is the purchase or hire of shoring boxes or related supporting structures.

• T rench shields – while this option can often be seen as interchangeable with shoring, there is a significant difference despite the paralleled use of shoring boxes. Shielding does not contact the sides of a trench, but rather acts as a barrier for a potential collapse.

Ground conditions

All ground collapse prevention methods should be designed in accordance with appropriate engineering principles and the relevant publisehd Australian standards.

A suitably qualified person - such as a geotechnical engineer - should also be consulted before work begins or if circumstances or conditions change. A major consideration when selecting which controls to use is the condition of the soil. Common varieties of ground encountered in excavations are: rock, hard compact soil, dry soil liable to crack or crumble or loose/ running material.

Hard compact soil is the type that can lead to misconceptions around the level of risk it poses, because it can appear to be stable.

Be prepared

Along with their Safe Work Method Statement, before work begins employers should establish emergency procedures to ensure as far as possible that a person can be rescued and given first aid, if there is any risk of them becoming engulfed with soil or other material.

These procedures should include details of on-site first aid provisions and the nearest medical facilities, as well as ways to provide easy site access to emergency services and to conduct on-site rescue actions ahead of their arrival at the worksite..

In Victoria, Fire Rescue Victoria is the only designated Control Agency for an incident in a trench or tunnel - with technical rescue stations in place around the state with trench and tunnel response capability.

In the event of any emergency on site, call Triple Zero - 000.

A daily checklist can be used to ensure that safety requirements are observed during trenching works. This includes ensuring that: nobody enters an unsupported section; trenching supports are used; soil

heaps are located at least 0.9m from the edge of the trench; two access points are provided for trenches longer than 8m; workers wear safety helmets; and ladder access into the trench is supplied.

WorkSafe ACT also suggests physical fall prevention measures are put in place, the trench is isolated using fencing or trench covers, pedestrian detours are established, a safe means of movement between levels of excavation is implemented, the trench is backfilled as work progresses and workers are properly trained before entering a trench.

Paving the way

RMIT University has been undertaking a project focused on incorporating waste plastic –including notoriously difficult to recycle soft plastics – into asphalt as a performance enhancer.

The resulting material is now being trialled at 10 project sites to see how it stands up against real-world wear.

With Australians generating 2.6 million tonnes of plastic waste each year and landfill space expected to reach capacity by 2025, this project is helping to address an urgent challenge.

Project lead, RMIT school of engineering associate professor Filippo Giustozzi, says that as part of the project the team will produce best-practice guidelines on the use of recycled plastics in asphalt roads.

“These guidelines will enable local governments, which control 80 per cent of the nation’s roads, to begin widescale adoption of this innovative recycling solution,” Giustozzi says.

The city of Melbourne and nine suburban and regional councils will lead the way, each having sections of recycled road up to 900 metres long paved over coming months.

“The project will enable the construction industry to transition from a trial-based approach, currently used for novel materials like recycled plastic, to a carefully planned and clear pathway for incorporating a greater volume of

recycled materials into their various projects,” Giustozzi says.

“The concept of the multi-council demonstration project is to gather a variety of data from real field applications that can contribute to the development of national specifications for local councils, thereby facilitating their future utilisation by the construction industry when prompted.”

The 10 project sites will use an estimated 21 tonnes of recycled plastic, but the potential scale of this solution is considerable given the several hundred thousand kilometres of roads strentching across Australia, Giustozzi says.

“If Australia’s 537 local governments each used a small amount of recycled plastic in the many roads they resurface each year, then nationally we’ll have created a large end-market for recycled plastic,” he says.

Extensive laboratory studies conducted by RMIT for Austroads show these mixes are mechanically, chemically and environmentally sound, he says.

“The performance of roads can actually be improved with the additions of recycled material, such as plastic and rubber, to be more durable against traffic and resistant against ageing,” Giustozzi says.

The team’s latest study found the recycled plastic asphalt mixtures had

150 per cent less cracking and 85 per cent less deformation under pressure testing than conventional asphalt.

“These studies tell us that adding specific types of plastic in the right way can generate greater rutting and fatigue resistance,” Giustozzi says.

“In some instances, the performance of the mix was similar to some of the more expensive polymers used in roads and substantially higher than conventional asphalt mixes.”

The partnership with Victorian councils and Austroads will now translate these findings into applied solutions that aim to enhance the sustainability of our roads.

“This is a critical step in demonstrating the feasibility of this approach to tackling a problematic waste stream in Australia, while establishing a trusted network for plastics recycling in road applications.” Giustozzi says.

“This same technology can be used in other infrastructure sectors, such as airport pavements construction, bridge decking and anywhere else asphalt is needed.”

Austroads chief executive Geoff Allan notes increasing interest in exploring the viability of repurposing recycled waste plastic.

“This project builds on the work completed last year that confirmed recycled plastics can be successfully incorporated in road infrastructure without detrimental effects on the environment, the health and safety of the workers, or the future recyclability of plastic-modified asphalt,” Allan says.

“A major contribution of this project will be to develop evidencebased guidance that will provide certainty to road managers about the use of recycled plastics in road surfacing applications and thus lay the foundations for this solution to be embraced nationally.”

Local government areas involved in the project include Melbourne, Banyule, Bayside, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay, Baw Baw, Latrobe, Casey, Mornington Peninsula and Wyndham.

FAE’s new road planer offering goes up to 150cm wide with dual transmission

FAE has announced the Australian release of its new RPL/SSL/DT cold planers for road repair.

The road’s surface is scraped and cut by the impact of special teeth that are attached to the rotor, spaced with a layout that was specifically designed by FAE to improve performance and reduce vibration.

The RPL/SSL/DT can be used in road preparation for resurfacing roads before applying a new layer of asphalt or concrete or to simplify excavation operations.

The RPL/SSL/DT, compatible with 90–135hp (67–101kW) skid steers, can scarify and mill down to 14cm deep.

The head comes standard with stateof-the-art technological features and the combination of self-leveling skids and tilt ensures optimal results even on uneven surfaces.

Bergmann has released a new four wheel drive electric transport truck for construction sites

German earthmoving truck manufacturer Bergmann Maschinenbau has unveiled its latest electric offering – the 804e transporter.

Its battery management system is the centrepiece of the electric vehicle line, in addition to Bergmann’s modularly manufactured lithium iron phosphate battery units with a total capacity of 24kWh.

The batteries can be charged via a standard domestic socket outlet or alternatively via quick charging stations or three-phase industrial power.

The C804e model is initially being offered as a bulk and general cargo transporter with a tipper, or with a three-sided tipping bed for the construction industry.

Under the designation M804e, the same vehicle base also offers a powerful alternative for municipal use as an attachment carrier.

Bergman offers numerous

attachments for irrigation, cleaning, landscaping or road clearance work, and the M804e can be flexibly used for urban building yards or service providers.

Bergmann says the 804e’s standout feature is its carrying capacity, being able to transport up to 3.5 tons (3.2 tonnes) per load.

Its built-in Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS) and Driver Status Monitoring (DSM) features, that include forward collision, tailgating, distracted driving and drowsy driving detection, provide real-time feedback to drivers so they can make instant improvements.

This highly configurable dual-camera system provides added understanding of what has occurred with high quality footage before, during, and after an event. Video data is automatically uploaded to the TN360 connected platform for immediate viewing so teams can identify high risk actions and provide transparent feedback to their drivers.

“It’s important for fleet owners to take action based on all of their data,” Rossington says.

“By incorporating video into training, they can make a positive impact on operational performance and costs.”

Hitachi is now selling its ZX135USL-7 forestry excavator in Europe, designed for compact logging environments

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) has launched the new ZX135USL-7 forestry excavator, designed for logging, log felling, loading and digging.

The manufacturer says that its higher ground clearance (560mm) makes travels smoother and easier over uneven terrain, while the short rear swing radius of 1,490mm makes it ideal for working in compact environments.

Hitachi says that the ZX135USL-7 forestry excavator has been designed to achieve a nine per cent fuel consumption saving compared to the previous model, partly due to its HIOS V hydraulic system. Fuel efficiency can be further controlled by using the new ECO gauge, which is accessible via the cab’s multifunctional 8-inch monitor.

For added versatility, the ZX135USL-7 forestry excavator has

a reinforced arm with piping for a breaker or crusher, a quick-coupler and assist piping. A front blade is also available.

Hitachi says that advances in cab design mean low noise levels as well as 16 per cent less vibration than the previous generation. New features include the synchronised motion of the seat and console – to reduce operator fatigue – and the adjustable console height.

On the safety side the cab is fitted with a fixed laminated front window and OPG level 2 front guard and additional lights on the cab roof provide greater visibility in low-light conditions.

The quality of the engine and hydraulic oil is monitored continuously by what Hitachi says is a unique innovation. Two sensors detect if the oil quality has deteriorated and data is transmitted to Global e-Service.

Coffee to concrete

Researchers at RMIT have used coffee grounds to improve the performance of concrete

RMIT engineers have found a way of making stronger concrete with roasted used coffee grounds.

The team has developed a technique to make concrete 30 per cent stronger by turning waste coffee grounds into biochar, which can replace a portion of the sand used to make concrete.

“The disposal of organic waste poses an environmental challenge as it emits large amounts of greenhouse gases, including methane and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change,” lead author Dr Rajeev Roychand says. With millions of kilograms of waste coffee going to landfill each year, generating greenhouse gases as it decomposes, this research could lead the way for this waste stream to be reused within the construction industry.

“The inspiration for our work was to find an innovative way of using the large amounts of coffee waste in construction projects rather than going to landfills – to give coffee a ‘double shot’ at life,” Roychand says.

“Several councils that are battling with the disposal of organic waste have shown interest in our work.

“They have already engaged us for their upcoming infrastructure projects incorporating pyrolysed forms of different organic wastes.”

The researchers plan to develop practical implementation strategies and work towards field trials. The team is keen to collaborate with various industries to develop their research.

Downer’s new asphalt plant is supporting the use of recycled material in road building in Tasmania

Infrastructure business Downer Group opened a new $10.5 million asphalt plant in Launceston in July that it says will enable a significant increase in the use of recycled materials to build Tasmanian roads.

“Our two existing asphalt manufacturing facilities in Tasmania currently produce thousands of tonnes each year that is used to build and maintain roads right across the state,” Downer executive general manager – national operations George Panagiotou says.

“Now the new plant has been commissioned we are tripling our hourly production rate, enabling Downer to service customers more efficiently.”

Panagiotou says the new facility brings sustainability benefits for the

Tasmanian community due to its lower carbon emission profile and improved energy efficiency.

“It’s also capable of producing road surfacing products that incorporate a high proportion of recycled products,” he says.

“This includes Downer’s Reconophalt product, which incorporates waste glass, soft plastics and up to 30 per cent reclaimed asphalt pavement.

“Using these waste products in road surfacing reduces reliance on virgin materials and delivers sustainability outcomes for the Tasmanian community.”

In order to build up Queensland’s construction workforce, Construction Skills Queensland has announced a $50 million training fund

With skills shortages continuing to hamper productivity and significant work moving through the pipeline, Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) has announced a $50 million training plan to increase workforce capacity in the state.

CSQ CEO Brett Schimming says Queensland’s construction industry will be under pressure over the next 12 months as it works to deliver large government projects alongside other streams.

“CSQ is tracking $49 billion of construction that will be underway over the next 12 months and this is shared almost evenly across building and engineering work,” he says.

While civil and commercial construction is on the up, a backlog of work means plenty of houses still need to be built in Queensland, he says.

“Looking further down the track there is going to be an unprecedented clustering of major projects – hospitals, roads, renewables and Olympics – all competing for finite human resources.

“If the construction sector has any hope of delivering the huge body of work that is coming, we are going to need a real plan to find skilled workers.”

CSQ is aiming to boost training and upskilling in Queensland to help build up a skillbase as well provide services for the growing call for training.

“CSQ has registered an increase in local training enrolments, and we’ve seen strong growth in employment of construction apprentices,” Schimming says.

“There are currently 26,100 apprentices across Queensland – that’s an 11 per cent increase from last year.

“CSQ-funded training is available for individuals and businesses of all sizes – from small mum and dad trade operators to huge workforces working on major projects.”

The Victorian government has announced a number of measures to boost quarry production in the state

The Victorian state government has announced that it is delivering several initiatives to support the delivery of raw materials for a new housing and infrastructure project.

A Resources Victoria Approvals Coordination trial is currently underway at Holcim’s Oaklands Junction quarry, with the overall aim of promoting site expansions and operating extensions across the state.

The Victorian government says the new Resources Victoria Approvals Coordination role will help significantly reduce approval times for quarry applications.

During its pilot phase, the approvals coordinator helped unlock more than 40 million tonnes of extra quarry material. The gross value of production of these additional resources is estimated to be more than $900 million.

Holcim Warrnambool was assisted to expand its hard rock production area and the group’s quarry at Werribee was able to increase output to provide vital flood recovery materials through an expansion of operating hours.

Holcim’s Oaklands Junction quarry supplies hard rock to a wide range of infrastructure projects including Level Crossing Removal, the West

Gate Tunnel Project and runway upgrades at Melbourne Airport. In 2021–22, Victoria achieved record state-wide quarry production, reaching more than 70 million tonnes.

A new Minerals Resources (Sustainable Development) Bill has recently passed Victoria’s Parliament, which the Labor government says will improve resources regulation and works approvals.

The Victorian Budget 2023/24 invested $23.2 million to deliver these reforms and streamline approvals, as well as to improve quarry rehabilitation.

“We’re ensuring Victoria has the materials it needs to meet the demand for new affordable housing and the major infrastructure projects our government is delivering,” Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio says.

“Our new regulations and approvals will help deliver more rock, sand and gravel, while ensuring the right safeguards are in place to protect the environment and communities.”

This pink-boomed Cat excavator is the latest addition to Sage Civil’s colourful fleet of machinery, fitting in alongside a purple Cat 730C articulated truck.

The driving force behind the brightly painted machinery is to spark conversations about attracting women to the civil industry – a topic very close to the heart of female-founded NSW business.

“Although it’s just a colour, it’s not a colour to me,” Sage Civil managing director Asha Russell says of the new pink excavator.

“It reflects what we’re trying to do in this industry and that is to drive women in civil. WesTrac believe in what we’re trying to achieve and that is the common ground.

“When people are driving past the job sites, and you’ve got a whole heap of yellow gear or orange gear and all of a sudden there’s a pink bit of gear… then the conversation starts and, for me, it’s the most important thing in this industry.

“It’s my passion to drive women in the industry, I’m not just doing it to tick a box.”

One of those female participants is Russell’s 20-year-old daughter, Paris,

who recently started an internship at Sage Civil.

“There are so many more opportunities that I was never given, to be a project engineer or civil engineer,” Russell says.

“Doing this internship has actually opened her eyes a bit; she’s going to do project management.”

The Civil Contractors Federation New South Wales has reported an increase in female participation across the industry from 4.2 per cent in 2017 to 9.9 per cent currently.

“It’s a massive shift. There’s been a lot of movement and it’s not uncommon to see multiple women operating machines on site now rather than just one, so it’s definitely working,” Russell says.

Role models like Russell provide proof of a career pathway for women in the civil industry, but she believes mentorship is vital in attracting and retaining women in such a maledominated industry.

“A lot of people come into the industry and they get thrown into the deep end. They might have a bad experience…where there’s no women or they feel isolated, they don’t get the joys of what this civil industry can really be,” she says.

Russell believes improving diversity in the civil industry is a team effort, requiring commitment from all involved.

“Diversity just isn’t about one person here, it’s not about Asha Russell, it’s about Sage Civil,” she says.

“It’s my whole team that makes it happen, it’s the supervisors and the fitters and the other operators that engage in this diversity to make it work.”

WesTrac’s Sustainability Plan –Towards 2030 includes key outcomes dedicated to diversity, with a goal of reaching 25 per cent female participation across the organisation by 2025.

WesTrac general manager construction industries Alister Cant says diversity is a strong focus for the business. Supporting pathways for women to succeed in the construction and mining industry is a priority.

“We want to see women excel across WesTrac’s operations and we’re proud to have such a targeted goal to be working towards,” Cant says.

“WesTrac continues to promote inclusion and diversity through education and training, recruitment targets and providing a safe and respectful working environment.”

The upgraded models aim to provide more intelligent features, higher efficiency, greater power output, a lower environmental impact and an enhanced driving experience, Sany says.

The new dump trucks are:

• the heavy-duty 432 dump truck, which has a stronger chassis bearing capacity than its predecessor, with the heightened ability to operate in extreme working conditions;

• the hybrid 321 dump truck with a hybrid drive system that offers benefits for mining and quarry applications;

• the composite 416 dump truck which has a composite body that is well-suited for use in urban environments. The composite body helps reduce weight, leading to lower energy consumption and operating costs;

• the hybrid 423 dump truck which excels in mountainous regions, mining areas and urban construction waste terrain;

• the medium-sized electric 207 dump truck which is optimised for use in urban environments.

Sany Heavy Industry president Yu Hongfu emphasised Sany’s commitment to its national ‘Dual Carbon Strategy’ at the product launch and stated that the new products marked the first release since Sany Engineering Vehicles’ creation, covering hybrid, heavy-duty and composite platforms.

With the increasing demand for new energy vehicles in municipal sanitation and construction engineering, Sany has invested heavily in the sector in recent years.

In 2022, Sany invested over $200 million in developing solutions for pure electric, hybrid, hydrogen fuel and traditional fuel vehicles.

Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ autonomous driver tech has been installed on a fleet of trucks at a mine in Norway, removing the need for a safety driver

Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) has installed autonomous technology on seven Volvo FH trucks for Norwegian mining company Brönnöy Kalk.

With the trucks operating in challenging conditions that include steep inclines, extreme weather and long stretches of dark tunnels, the aim of implementing autonomous control was to increase safety and efficiency by removing human drivers from the trucks.

“A long-held vision is now a reality. Removing the safety driver in an active commercial transport operation in some of the world’s most challenging conditions is a major leap for the industry,” VAS president Nils Jaeger says.

The tarucks are used to transport limestone between the mine and a crusher on a 5km stretch. A wheel loader operator uses a touchscreen in the wheel loader to call the trucks for loading and to manage the operation.

“With this milestone we are underlining our leadership in autonomous driving and paving the way for a safer and more efficient future for the mining and quarrying industries. This is a major step forward for us,” Brönnöy Kalk managing director Raymond Langfjord says.

“We implemented autonomous

trucks for several reasons—safety, efficiency and flexibility. With the removal of the safety driver, we can now truly reap these benefits and increase our competitiveness in this tough industry.”

The solution implemented at Brönnöy Kalk has been in development since 2018. VAS says it represents an important step in technological advancement and a new future for business models because, rather than purchasing a truck or machine, Brönnöy Kalk is buying autonomous transport capacity.

“While autonomy brings unprecedented benefits to the industry, incorporating new technologies into existing operations can be a daunting challenge for many customers,” VAS head of solutions, mining and quarry Sven-Erik Gustafsson says.

“By providing a complete solution that encompasses everything from software to site infrastructure to training to operations, we can reduce complexity for customers like Brönnöy Kalk and enable them to be a part of the autonomous future.”

Collie concrete

A new type of concrete incorporating Collie fly ash will take the next step towards commercialisation after a WA government grant was awarded

WA Regional Development Minister Don Punch has announced that Murdoch University will receive $100,000 towards demonstrating a new low carbon product called Colliecrete on the Bunbury Outer Ring Road.

The demonstration project follows an investigation into the feasibility of using coal power station ash waste, industrial by-products and waste materials as ingredients in geopolymer concrete.

Collie, located inland from Bunbury in southwest WA, has for decades been a centre of coal power generation. It therefore has large stockpiles of flyash waste as well as the continued production of 300,000 tonnes of flyash every year.

The Colliecrete Project has been investigating the use of flyash as an alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement, creating a lower-emission building material, as geopolymer concrete can be made at room temperature, unlike the high temperatures required for traditional concrete.

Colliecrete says that flyash and other by-products available in Collie could sustainably supply around 10 per cent of WA’s concrete requirements.

“It is great seeing the level of innovation and new business development taking place in Collie, with support from the Cook government,” Punch says.

“We have been proudly supporting Colliecrete on its journey from feasibility to demonstration.”

Between December 2023 and September 2024, Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone will close their 3G networks, which could impact those with older tech

Major telecommunication operators have announced that they will be shutting down the 3G mobile network from the end of this year.

The 3G network facilitates mobile communication and internet access via phone towers. However, this has now been superseded by the 4G and 5G networks.

Austroads, which represents transport agencies across Australia and New Zealand says that industry needs to be aware that technology using 3G to communicate will be impacted by this shutdown, with operators urged to start their transition to 4G and 5G immediately.

As 5G becomes more accessible, and telecommunication companies focus on rolling out 5G capability across Australia, many operators have already stopped 3G coverage.

Known as reallocating or re-farming, this is when a specific mobile radio frequency (or spectrum) band is repurposed from one technology to another. Once the 3G spectrum band has been reallocated, it will no longer be available to use.

phone will continue to work on the 4G band as before.

However, users of a 3G-only device (or 4G device without VoLTE capability) are urged to consider upgrading their systems. Services that may be affected include:

• traffic management signs used in school zones, intersections and freeways;

• weather systems and stations;

• alarms/building entry;

• devices that incorporate gateway or mesh backhaul;

• Personal Emergency Response (PER) systems; and

• phones and tablets.

Cut-off deadlines are as follows:

• Vodafone – 15 December 2023

• Telstra – 30 June 2024

• Optus – 24 September 2024.

Caterpillar has announced the release of the new Cat 777 (05) water solutions truck in Australia and New Zealand, providing an integrated solution to help reduce haul road dust by solving overwatering and underwatering issues.

The new 777 (05) is built on the Cat 777E truck platform and uses less water for controlling haul road dust. Its Cat Water Delivery System (WDS) combines with Cat MineStar Edge connectivity to help operators manage the site more safely and productively with flexible levels of technology to meet site needs.

Featuring a 75,700L Cat-branded water tank, the 777 (05) comes complete with spray system, splash guards, fill chute and rock ejectors. It is powered by the 765kW (1,026 horsepower) Cat C32B engine that meets China Nonroad Stage III emission standards, equivalent to US EPA Tier 2.

Control and data tracking

The new water truck’s exclusive Cat WDS features a self-contained hydraulic system that controls spray patterns independent of engine RPM for consistent watering.

Variable water flow, based on the truck’s speed, automatically starts and stops when the truck slows or comes to a halt, preventing overwatering and subsequent poor

traction at road intersections. The pump features soft startups and automatically shuts off when the tank is empty to prevent system damage. WDS components include a water cannon, oil cooler, variable displacement pump, hydraulic oil tank, electronic control boxes and hydraulic motor/water pump. Covering up to a 24m-wide road in a single pass, the system sprays at rates reaching 0.8L/square metre at

speeds from 4 to 40km/h. With its maximum 61m spray distance, the truck’s water cannon offers a maximum flow rate reaching 4,732L/min.

Factory-installed, ergonomic water controls are integrated into the truck’s design for convenient system operation. Its innovative automated water delivery feature enables the operator to remain focused on driving and site traffic to enhance safety. Complete with auto shut-off to prevent overfilling, the water tank is filled remotely, allowing the operator to remain inside the cab during the cycle to reduce potential operator slips and falls.

MineStar Edge collects machine data, allowing site supervisors to monitor the water truck to know where and when it’s spraying water.

Asset management options include productivity, water usage, fuel and water tank levels, when and where to apply water, geofencing, asset location and remote management of water distribution.

Hay’s own irrigation experts Crightons Rural Engineering celebrates its third generation of family workers

With more than 40 years specialising in building, maintaining and supporting irrigation systems, the practice of Crightons Rural Engineering has aged like fine wine.

The business was founded by Frank and Rhonda Crighton in 1982, with Frank’s mechanically gifted mind and gentlemanly nature, combined with Rhonda’s drive, decision-making and ambitious energy, helping Crightons to grow into the reliable company it is today.

In the face of emerging El Niño conditions in the early 2000s, Crightons sought out municipal, horticultural and commercial works, surviving the drought and growing the business against all odds.

Now well into the 2020s, Crightons has not only survived, but grown with the times. Frank and Rhonda’s children now stand beside him to keep the dream of a family business for the people alive.

“Work is Frank’s happy place and purpose; you can’t wipe the smile and pride off his face each day when he consistently turns up to work,” daughter Keryl Crighton says.

“Frank always guided staff to get the best out of themselves, loved sharing his knowledge while giving them space to grow and learn in an encouraging environment.

“He allowed people to build their confidence without judgement. Mistakes were always looked at as an opportunity to learn.”
