Above: The MAX CUT cutterbar features a wave-shaped mower bed which gives a better quality cut and is more efficient and reliable
New cutterbar features in the six new models of
Claas’ Disco rear mower
range, set for delivery Down Under in Spring 2021
Claas has released six new side-mounted rear mowers in its Disco range, ranging in widths from 2.2 to 3.4m, and will be ready for order in November. The mowers can angle up to 45 degrees upwards and 20 degrees downwards, with centre-of-gravity hitching that ensures that the mower bed has uniform contact pressure over the entire working width of the mower. Each of the units incorporate Claas’ new Max Cut cutterbar – featuring a wave-shaped mower bed press formed from a single piece of material that Claas Harvest Centre product specialist Blair McAlwee says combines the benefits of both inline and satellite cutterbars. “This unique design has become synonymous with cutting quality, operational efficiency and reliability,” he says. “The cutting disc is positioned further forward on the cutterbar, ensuring the largest possible overlap between each disc for optimal cutting quality under all conditions.” The mower bed also comes with Claas’s Safety Link module, which causes it to shear at a pre-determined breaking point in case of a collision. “But the cutting disc is held in the module by an axial bolt and cannot fly off,” McAlwee says. “The safety module can be replaced easily and quickly.” The models include the entry-level Disco 24, 28 and 32 rear mowers with side hitching, with working widths from 2.2–3m, and which McAlwee says are built to be sturdy despite a lightweight design. Power is fed into the inner mowing disc from above, meaning no inner shoe is required, and the belt drive can be tensioned without tools, using a rotary knob. “The PTO shaft speed can be reduced from 540 to 480rpm in light crops or when topping, which significantly reduces fuel consumption,” McAlwee says. The unit has various mounting options available, including the Quickhitch mounting frame, and the protective covers open simply for easy maintenance, while the unit also folds to 95 degrees for transport. Another three models, with working widths from 2.2 to 3.4m, have been added to the Disco 100 series, with a new mechanical centre of gravity and suspension springs that are adjustable without tools. “The new double-acting hydraulic ram ensures a reliable and safe folding process even on hilly ground and end position dampening,” McAlwee says. “The new transport folding to 105 degrees ensures safe transport, even with lighter tractors.“

Berrima Engineering has a small target strategy for its new hayrake – designed for small mowers, and tight fields
The newly released BRS350 is a hydraulically driven, single basket, one tonne roller bar rake with a 3.5m raking width. “This machine has been brought about through a demand in the market for a single basket rake to invert windrows to decrease drying times,” the company says. “The BRS350 can also be used as a conventional side delivery rake for smaller hay programs and is packed with useful features.” The new flotation system uses Timbren heavy duty rubber springs, which allow the basket to follow uneven ground and helps keep the rake from missing any hay. Its hydraulic basket lift means the tines never touch the ground – preventing the collection of contaminants, while the basket height is easily adjusted to allow for precise levelling. But Berrima Engineering says the feature that separates this machine from other single basket rakes is its ability to invert a windrow without the tractor having to drive over it. This is achieved by its variable basket angle and a steering mechanism that allows the rake to be extremely flexible, it says. The basket angle can also be adjusted to prevent roping, giving the option of creating fluffy windrows for quick drying and rake heavy silage with ease. Able to rake at up to 16km/h and travel at a maximum transport speed of 30km/h, the rake folds to a transport width of 3m, a length of 5.5m and a transport height of 2m. Berrima Engineering also has a 4.5m model for those looking for a wider option.
