FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the latest edition of Farms & Farm Machinery The new year is upon us, and with that comes a mixture of optimism and caution. Nobody knows exactly what 2024 holds in store, although we have brought you multiple industry forecasts which will give farmers some idea of what to expect. This is in addition to sharing results from the National Farmers Federation’s farmer priorities survey, which provides an insight into what farmers would like to see and what they are already thinking. A new year often brings big picture thinking, such as Dieci Australia’s push to expand its dealership network to additional parts of the country, while also running a promotion on its popular Agri Plus 40.7 telehandler. Maxam Tyres is also sharing the results of its own big picture thinking, introducing a new concept which is described as ‘liquid gold’, and which should reach Australian farms in the next 12 to 18 months. Sometimes ideas are such winners they just keep sticking around. One example of this is the subject of our cover story – the slim and highly versatile Antonio Carraro tractors. Their unique design allows them to fit easily into tight spaces such as vineyards and we discuss the additional benefits this is offering both farmers and customers from other industries. Farms & Farm Machinery is naturally an Australian-focused magazine, although last edition’s extensive Agritechnica coverage shows we always have an eye on what is happening overseas, but still relevant to our local market. This time, we give some attention to what is happening in New Zealand – thanks to some product releases and an extensive profile on a farm which is adopting an innovative and creative approach to sustainability.
4
Innovation is a common theme in any agricultural discussion and one of the exciting things about the year ahead is discovering what the many brilliant minds in the farming industry will come up with. Many of these will be on show at next month’s evokeAG event, which is why we have highlighted the startups who will be vying for attention there. Another recent result of innovation comes from overseas, courtesy of New Holland developing an accessible tractor for farmers with lower leg disabilities. Innovation comes in many forms, and another example we have highlighted in through a free online game that aims to teach school students practical advice about farm safety in a fun and engaging manner. You never know where the next innovation will come from, but it is a safe bet that much of it will be on display at this year’s field days around the country. It is for this reason that we have opted to publish our extensive calendar of the year’s events one more time – just to help readers maximise the opportunity to plan their year ahead and not miss out on any of the exciting events. Whatever 2024 brings for Australian agriculture, Farms & Farm Machinery will be there to showcase it all. Happy reading!

ANZ says Australia is well placed to increase cattle exports. Image: nilsversemann - stock.adobe.com
Farm consolidation is likely and long-term opportunity remains positive despite broader economic uncertainty, according to ANZ’s Agri InFocus summer report. The report has provided insight into many of Australia’s key farming sectors including cattle, sheep, grains, wool, dairy, cotton and sugar, while also discussing major economic issues likely to affect the agricultural industry. ANZ’s head of agribusiness Mark Bennett described 2023 as a rollercoaster and says the answer to whether a farmer ended the year up or down depends on both their sector and their location. He acknowledges issues such as interest rates and access to labour remain challenges but believes the long-term outlook for
Australian agriculture has many reasons to be positive. “It’s a reasonable suggestion that following some record output years and livestock rebuild, farm production and profitability normalises in the outlook period,” he says. “But this doesn’t spell a departure from the long-term opportunity that has been well documented. “The trend of farm consolidation continues as well-placed farming enterprises invest for the future that remains underpinned by continuing strong demand for our well-regarded commodities - in a world where production is proving to be variable.” The grains harvest is tipped to return to near-average levels after several high years, with the forecast yield being the clos-
est to the long-term average since 2017-18. ANZ believes the cattle industry is well placed to increase exports, thanks to a rise in production combined with a declining herd in the United States. A recent destocking also meant the three main indices - National Feeder Steer, National Heavy Steer and National Restocker Yearling Steer – all moved as close to each other as they have been in four years. Sheep supply has been high, while has helped enable Australia to post record volumes of exports. Wool supply has also been strong, but ANZ says three major factors have impacted prices – consistent and stable global supply, sluggish demand and strong competition from competing fibres. Among the key takeaways from ANZ’s broader economic insight is that food inflation is disparate across categories, infrastructure activity will support economic growth, the labour market should remain strong, and the Australian dollar is tipped to have a modest rise against the US dollar in 2024.
Sunny outlook
Rabobank’s Q4 Rural Confidence Survey found that net levels of confidence among Australian farmers has grown after dropping to the fourth lowest level in the survey’s history in the previous quarter. Fourteen per cent of farmers are expecting the agricultural economy to improve in the next 12 months (up from 10 per cent with that view from the previous quarter), while 27 per cent expected economic conditions to remain stable. Expectations around commodity prices were cause for optimism among farmers with a positive outlook (nominated by 61 per cent), particularly in the dairy and sugar sectors. Good seasonal conditions were nominated as a driver of confidence by 30 per cent of farmers expecting the agricultural economy to improve in the coming 12 months. “The anticipated – and later declared – return to El Niño conditions had dampened spirits in our quarter three survey,” Rabobank group executive for Country Banking Australia Marcel van Doremaele says. “Since then, climate-wise we’ve seen a range of conditions around the country with everything from severe bushfires, to damaging summer storms, to heat events, to welcome rain for some areas offset by
ongoing dry conditions elsewhere.” The largest percentage of farmers (55 per cent) still anticipate economic conditions will worsen. This has risen from 51 per cent the previous quarter. More farmers put down their negative outlook down to softer commodity prices (64 per cent, up from 60 per cent) and worries about drought (45 per cent, was 32 per cent). “Western Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian farmers, in particular, are assessing the fall out of a very dry finish to spring. Many South Australian producers had a better-than-anticipated harvest result, although some did have to contend with late frosts and summer hailstorms, and now heavy early December rainfall,” van Doremaele says. “This was offset by a general lift in farmer confidence in New South Wales on the back of recent rainfall in central and northern parts of the state after a very dry run. Drought remains the chief concern in Queensland although there has been useful – albeit patchy, summer storms.” Although there are some signs of optimism for farmers, var Doremaele says there is a forecasted drop in value of Australian agriculture production for 2023-24 due to seasonal and market factors as well as increased global supply.

Solar setup Australia has enormous potential for grazing sheep and growing fruit and vegetables under solar panels, a report has found, but work needs to be done A report into co-locating solar development with agricultural production, otherwise known as agrisolar or agrivoltaics, has found major potential for this to occur in Australia. Consultants Karin Stark, of Farm Renewables Consulting, and Andrew Bomm of Progressive Agriculture wrote in their “Pursuing an Agrivoltaic Future in Australia” report that having food and energy systems co-located on developed land was a promising pathway. However, better planning, more research and targeted government policy would be
needed to make it work for farmers. Insights from farmers, government representatives, researchers and solar developers were drawn on for the report, which also found knowledge gaps were an impediment – but optimism about the concept existed. “I found there was considerable optimism for the feasibility of agrivoltaics in Australia, but change is required to ensure future solar developments are undertaken in a way that guarantees successful outcomes,” report co-author Stark says. “International studies have highlighted several benefits associated with solar over crops, such as enhanced yields in the case of certain produce like berries, tomatoes and leafy greens.

A report found Australia has strong agrivoltaic potential. Image: Adobe
“Solar over vineyards has also demonstrated benefits to the sugar and alcohol content of grapes given the fruit’s sensitivity to hot weather. “Overseas research has indicated advantages including increased soil moisture, reduced irrigation demands, protection from excessive heat, and safeguarding against frost and hail damage.” The report recommended the Federal Government provide funding to develop best practice guidelines, collaborate with the renewables industry to invest in ongoing research, and develop frameworks for carbon and biodiversity incentives.

Australian cattle slaughter numbers are expected to increase in 2024. Image: dusanpetkovic1 stock.adobe.com
Bulking up Rabobank’s annual Global Animal Protein Outlook Report predicts production to increase in Australia Increasing livestock numbers and the expectation of dry conditions in the year ahead will contribute to an increase in animal protein production in Australia, according to Rabobank’s annual report. After three years of favourable conditions, the dry conditions expected for 2024 will likely see an increase in the number of fattened animals distributed to market. Cattle slaughter numbers are expected to increase this year, continuing a strong 2023 which saw a 16 per cent increase, Rabobank predicts. “With a slight contraction in average slaughter weights, caused by drier conditions affecting producers’ ability to finish stock and by cull animals being added to the system, we expect beef and lamb production to increase by four per cent and one per cent respectively in 2024,”
Rabobank senior protein analyst Angus Gidley-Baird says. Gidley-Baird says despite the expectation that livestock slaughter and production volumes will increase, there are still several uncertainties that exist and could determine the size and impact of the increase. “Concerns triggered by previous dry seasons have caused notable lack of confidence among livestock producers and forecasts of dry conditions have meant some have made decisions to sell livestock early,” he says. “The extent to which increased slaughter numbers in 2023 reflect surplus livestock in the system or a reduction in numbers due to season conditions is unclear. But if it is the latter, it will lead to lower levels of slaughter in 2024 and beyond.” Training has launched to prevent livestock and wildlife diseases transferring to humans. Image: littlewolf1989 - stock.adobe.com
Detect and prevent Following the COVID-19 pandemic, a new training package has launched to help prevent livestock and wildlife diseases transferring to humans 8
The Asia Pacific Consortium of Veterinary Epidemiology (APCOVE) recently launched its field training package, designed to help veterinary practitioners and animal handlers detect and prevent infectious diseases in the field before they can emerge as pandemics. The University of Sydney-led APCOVE launched the training package during the Global Field Epidemiology Partnership (GFEP) meeting as part of events surrounding the World Health Summit, held in October last year. APCOVE leader and associate professor at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, Navneet Dhand, said the package would be the “biggest resource for field veterinary epidemiology training globally” and would be free of cost. “The risk of zoonotic diseases transferring from livestock and wildlife to humans is increasing, as shown by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dhand says. “So, training new generations of animal disease detectives at the frontline is vital
Australia’s livestock sector will remain heavily influenced by domestic livestock supply, due to a slow global consumer market in 2024, Rabobank says. “The contraction in US beef production will support demand for Australian exports and improve the competitiveness of Australian beef in markets such as Japan, South Korea and China, providing a counter to increasing supply and possibly some upside to cattle prices as the year progresses,” Gidley-Baird says. “However, lamb and sheep meat have no such global demand stimulation, therefore we expect prices for these will remain soft throughout the year.” Outside of Australia, Rabobank’s annual Global Animal Protein Outlook report predicts the rest of the world to see production slow or even decline. After four years of growth in production globally, producers and processors will have to navigate tighter margins due to structural changes to market conditions. Prices on animal protein are expected to increase due to higher production costs and tighter supplies, putting a strain on global consumption. to help prevent diseases wiping out livestock or infecting humans.” Thirty-six e-learning modules are included in the package which involves training on outbreak investigation, surveillance, data analysis, risk assessment, disease control, biosecurity, One Health itself, leadership and communication. The modules have been prepared over the past three years by more than 40 APCOVE partners from all veterinary schools in Australia and New Zealand, one veterinary school in the United States and eight countries in the Asia-Pacific region. “It has only been possible to develop this valuable resource due to the collaborative effort of enthusiastic epidemiologists from several countries and organisations committed to strengthening health security and preventing the next pandemic,” Dhand says. APCOVE works with government animal health authorities and educators in the Asia-Pacific region. According to the group’s website, it helps train people to detect, prevent and control animal disease outbreaks that may impact human health, animal health and farmer livelihoods. United front The National Farmers Federation has joined a new global Agriculture Climate Alliance Australia’s peak farming body – the National Farmers Federation – has joined its counterparts from New Zealand and South America in a new alliance. The Agriculture Climate Alliance made its inaugural statement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference – COP28 – which was held in Dubai in December. “Farmers around the world are at the front line of climate change,” the statement says. “We must be proactive and ambitious in our actions to mitigate [greenhouse gas] emissions from agriculture and adapt to climate change. “A failure to act risks exacerbating existing food security issues around the world.” Along with NFF, the alliance includes Federated Farmers of New Zealand, and Federation of Rural Association of Mercosur. The latter organisation encompasses farmers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil,
Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Colombia. The COP28 summit was also the first time the NFF was represented by new president David Jochinke. “My time there highlighted to me how critical it is that farmers are represented in these global discussions where decisions being made about our livelihoods,” he says. “We also saw a global alliance of farming groups led by Australia call for genuine action, including through investment in research to deliver lower emissions agriculture without sacrificing productivity. “It’s critical that we step up and be part of these discussions and help steer the agenda. “The risks if we don’t are real – both in terms of the impact of climate change, and the impact of policies which might limit food and fibre production in the pursuit of net zero.” In its inaugural statement - entitled ‘A climate agenda for agriculture to 2050 and beyond’ – the alliance called on governments and society to commit to five key principles. These are: – Develop and implement voluntary, market and incentive-based emissions reduction policies that advance

risk, science and evidence-based outcomes and promote farmer and rural livelihoods; – Rapidly increase investment in climate research and development that drives innovation in agriculture and builds resilience in farming systems, assists the transition for developing countries and empowers the next generation of farmers; – Support fair distribution of new technologies and practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase agricultural productivity and farm business profitability and underpin adaptation and resilience around the world; – Recognise the essential role of livestock in the global agri-food system and fasttrack research and development that mitigates related GHG emissions; and – Reduce pre and post-farm gate food waste to provide greater benefits for farmers, stimulate circular agriculture, increase food security and reduce GHG emissions alongthe food value chain.
Measuring a farm’s natural capital can lead to commercial benefits. Image: Adobe/Taras Vyshnya
Capital gains A four-year research project has led to the development of a tool which allows farmers to unlock the value of their natural capital Fifty farms across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania were involved in the four-year project which aims to help farmers derive value from the soil, water, birds and trees on their land.
10
The project, which was named ‘Farmscale Natural Capital Accounting’ was led by La Trobe University researchers. Natural capital accounting puts a value on nature on farms, researchers say, and farmers can use the accounts to measure and improve both their farm performance and their management of natural capital, while maintaining natural resources and biodiversity. Lead researcher Jim Radford says putting a value on natural capital means farmers can use their sustainability credentials for commercial benefit. “This is the first time whole-of-farm natural capital accounts have been produced in bulk from different geographic locations across a range of farming sectors, such as grazing, cropping, mixed farming and farm forestry,” he says. “This project demonstrates that it is possible to generate detailed, comprehensive, farm-scale environmental accounts.” Across the 50 farms, about one-quarter of all Australia’s bird species were recorded – including 34 species listed as threatened.
One of the farms involved was Orana Park, a 5,250ha cropping and grazing operation in central Victoria, and its account showed more than 70 species of birds and 145 species of plants, including four threatened species. “Our team has always understood the value of nature to farming and the future, but it was the lack of data for farmers about their natural capital which was the limitation,” farm manager Matt Davis says. Another beneficiary of the project are sheep farmers Jo and Greg Bear from northern Victoria. “As long-term farmers, we have witnessed first-hand the tremendous impact that looking after natural capital has had on all facets of our business and our personal life, but we had no data or evidence to back up this experience,” Jo says. “Natural Capital Accounting fills in the missing link by providing valuable evidence to key stakeholders in our business now and into the future.” Researchers believe natural capital accounting will benefit the entire agricultural supply chain, right through to consumers.

Tractors come in all shapes and sizes. As many broadacre farmers move towards enormous machines with new levels of power – and a physical footprint to match – it is important to remember there is another group of growers whose needs are moving in the other direction. Antonio Carraro’s range of narrow articulated tractors excel in vineyards and cropping scenarios where space is limited, particularly between rows, and where every centimetre counts. It is this ability to supply tractors as narrow as 1.025m while still providing up to 110hp – and with a PTO shaft for attachments – that is even catching the eye of customers beyond the agricultural sector. “The fact they are so narrow and it’s a tractor with a PTO shaft means we have had enquiries for all sorts of other uses,” Antonio Carraro Australia’s national sales manager Marco Corra says. “Just imagine construction workers, and builders having to move bricks on the side

of the houses - the distance between the wall and the fence is about 1.5m. “People are wanting to move material into that area, and they came to us as well because the tractors are so narrow.” This unexpected usage provides a good example of how versatile Antonio Carraro’s products are, however it remains a fact that agricultural settings are the bread and butter for the Italian-made tractors. Corra highlights three tractors which
meet the criteria of being narrow and articulated – the 50hp SN 5800, the 90hp SRX 9800, and the 110hp SRX 8900. The last of these is not only the most powerful, but also offers a pressurised cabin. It forms part of the SRX range, which Corra says has been a staple of Antonio Carraro’s offering for 60 years. “The main reasons why farmers choose a narrow machine is to not touch the fruit and to go into very narrow spaces,” he says.
Moving in tight spaces is one of the tractors’ specialities
14
“It’s normal for us have compact tractors that are articulated and very narrow, because in Italy the rows are planted 1.2m apart. “A narrow tractor is what farmers are going for in Australia as well, and it’s simply because there is a demand for people that are planting narrow crops or vineyards as well as berries, like a berry plantation from Coffs Harbour - for example - but also in Western Australia. “Pretty much all the growing areas which have been established with big names like the Barossa Valley and Margaret River have land which is either not cheap or no longer available. “Before, growers were planting much wider, but now they’re reducing the line width.” Being a narrow and compact tractor is one thing, but being able to function effectively in these tight spaces is crucial to a farmer’s success. This is one example of how Antonio Carraro’s range excels, thanks in part to its patented Actio chassis. This means the axles go through the chassis, rather than sitting on top of a fixed chassis, and the benefits of this include a lower centre of gravity and therefore greater stability. Actio also means there is an oscillation point, and as a result the front axle moves 15 degrees each side in comparison to the rear axle. One of the SN 5800’s standout features is its narrow track width of just 98cm. Despite its compactness and suitability for tight spaces, it is still fitted with a rear hydraulic lift with three-point linkage and a 1,700kg lift capacity. Stepping up to the SRX 9800 and SRX 8900 also introduces another of Antonio

Carraro’s unique features – reversible driving. The driving system is positioned on a rotating turret which inverts the driving direction 180-degrees in just a few seconds, meaning operators can work equally efficiently with both towed and frontal attachments. A 2,400kg lift capacity means a wide variety of attachments can comfortably be used with the SRX tractors. Farmers wanting an additional step-up in their operating experience can choose the SRX 8900 with pressurised cabin. This offers everything a farmer would want for comfort, including air-conditioning, speakers, and sound buffering. Its compactness also means trees and fruit are still just as protected as in the open ROPS cabins of Antonio Carraro’s other tractors. Protecting the crops is crucial for farmers, particularly when every piece of fruit equals money. This is where a compact and narrow tractor comes into its own, and where Antonio Carraro’s decades of experience truly shines.
The SRX8900 is designed to excel in narrow spaces
“For blueberries in particular, the bushes are planted narrow and once they start growing, the head of the bush expands out into the centre of the row,” Corra says. “The fruit in particular is delicate, therefore a big machine can get caught on the branches where the fruit is and farmers can
lose big percentages of the fruit. “For big producers, something like five per cent is really a huge financial loss.” Antonio Carraro’s full tractor range can be viewed online at www.antoniocarraro.it/au/

Market forces A survey of more than 1,600 farmers has provided an insight into both the national optimism levels and industry priorities Farmers remain passionate about their industry and communities, but their overall positivity levels for the sector remain mixed. This is among the finding of the National Farmers Federation’s Farmer Priorities Survey, which included more than 1,600 respondents and provides insight into what are considered the biggest issues. One key positive finding was that more respondents are positive than negative about the future of farming than they were a year ago. The positive response was 37.2 per cent compared to 31.4 per cent who felt more negatively, with the remaining 31.4 per cent being neutral. The most optimistic sectors were fruit and vegetable growers, followed by the sugar industry (55.8 per cent positive and 55.4 per cent, respectively), while beef producers were the least positive at 26.6 per cent. Fruit and vegetable growers were also among the most optimistic when asked whether they expected the volume of Australian food and fibre production to increase over the next decade, with only the cotton sector responding more favourably. Farmers were also asked about their level of concern on 15 industry issues and were able to respond as ‘very concerned’, ‘concerned’, or ‘not concerned’. Federal climate change policies was the issue which gained the most ‘very concerned’ responses at 41.7 per cent. This was followed by protecting Australia’s biosecurity at 39.5 per cent, and the
16
market power of processors and supermarkets at 37.5 per cent. When the ‘very concerned’ and ‘concerned’ responses are combined, this last issue became the most pressing with 83 per cent of farmers expressing some level of concern. Federal environment laws (82 per cent) and roads and transport infrastructure (81.8 per cent) were the two issues which gained the next most concern. The previously-mentioned biosecurity and climate policies were next, followed by Australia’s overseas trading relationships, local services such as health and education, then animal welfare laws. Fiona Simson wrote a foreword to the report before leaving her position as NFF president, and says the survey is an important opportunity for farmers’ voices to be heard. “What we’ve heard is profound. Farmers’ love of what they do and where they live has shone through, which will be no surprise to anyone who has ever spoken to a farmer,” she said. “But unease about the future has also emerged. Farmers are concerned by a wide range of issues, including government policies that will shape their livelihoods. “It is critical that these concerns are heard and acted upon. “Everyone who enjoys our world class Australian produce has a stake in our industry’s future.” Farmers were also asked whether they thought the federal government was doing enough on ten major issues.
More than 1,600 farmers from around Australia responded to the survey Image: 169169 - stock.adobe.com
Investing in rural infrastructure, reducing red tape on farmers and levelling the playing field for farmers were the three areas which received the most ‘not doing enough’ responses. Conversely, securing new overseas markets was the area where most respondents felt the government was doing about the right amount. Close to half of all respondents (48.1 per cent) felt the government was doing ‘about the right amount’ on protecting the environment, while investing in biosecurity and addressing worker shortage had the next highest responses in this category. Another revelation was that 87.2 per cent of agricultural businesses would employ at least one additional worker if hiring conditions were improved, with just over 40 per cent saying they would employ more than 10 additional workers. Access to accommodation was cited as the factor having the biggest impact on worker access, followed by community perceptions of agriculture. The National Farmer Priorities Survey also covered a wide spectrum of Australian farming, with no individual sector accounting for more than 18 per cent of respondents. Western Australian farmers had the most favourable response to the statement ‘I love what I do’, followed by those in Victoria and New South Wales.

INDUSTRY NEWS Results based on queen bee production have been released. Image: Mediteraneo stock.adobe.com
Survey says A new survey has released results based on queen bee production Plan Bee, Australia’s national honeybee genetic improvement program, has released results from a nationwide survey into queen bee production. The survey was the first of its kind to describe values for queen and package bee sales from all major Australian beekeeping states, while also providing valuable insights into queen products sold to domestic and export markets and market access. Before this survey, no official nationwide data had ever been formally recorded or reported, based on domestic or export queen and package bee sales in Australia. The 35 survey respondents from the survey sold 41,803 queen products in total domestically while another 2,664 queen products were exported. Of the respondents, 17.6 per cent didn’t
sell any queen products as they opted to breed queens solely for use within their own organisation. “The full range of products were reported in domestic sales including naturally and artificially inseminated queens, package bees, nucleus colonies, queen cells, virgin queens, and naturally mated breeder queens mated in specific geographically isolated breeding locations,” Plan Bee co-lead researcher Elizabeth Frost says. Of the exported queen products, 99 per cent were exported to Canada and 1 per cent were exported to Fiji, all originating from Western Australia. There are opportunities in domestic and export markets for the queen sector but due to the limited number of skilled queen bee breeders, it is a challenge.
Growing global markets for Australian queens and package bees are potentially lucrative, however the marketplace is further constrained by major risks including freight costs and the threat of export bans. Based on the survey results, several recommendations have been made. They include the establishment of an official register of Australian queen breeders and producers to assist the domestic market to locate production or breeder queens to purchase and sustain their business enterprises, while also connecting queen breeders and producers to potential new markets. “Clear delineation of queen breeders and producers will assist in the development of a market for queen breeders of elite selected stock. Queen breeding requires additional work that must be renumerated, which is difficult when the market doesn’t understand the difference,” Frost says. “The low volume of queen exports as well as domestic sales proportionate to registered beekeepers do not justify raising the queen bee levy, which is currently set at zero.”

Life lessons Several New South Wales universities have joined forces to create a free online game that teaches kids about farm safety Project lead and UNSW injury prevention researcher Amy Peden joined focus groups at agricultural high schools in NSW and Tasmania during the game’s development. “What was interesting is that nearly everyone knew someone who’d had a pretty horrific injury on the farm, or they’d been injured themselves,” she says. “Like many other injury issues, I realised that farm safety and injury prevention is often promoted for very young children or adults. Adolescents get lost in between.” The project also involved researchers in injury prevention, education and game development from University of Technology Sydney, James Cook University and the
University of Sydney Rural Medical School. The result is Calm Your Farm – a free online game which has four modules (vehicles, workshops, paddock, and water) based on high-risk areas or farm hazards. Players select a character and complete mini games as they complete the modules. It also includes practical information about injury prevention, such as selecting appropriate clothing and recognising hazard symbols. One of the schools involved in the focus groups was Exeter High School in Tasmania, whose students and teachers had positive feedback after testing the game out. “We enjoyed playing the game very much – it was very interactive,” student Cleveland Davey says.
Students were able to test out Calm Your Farm during its development. Image: Exeter High School
“I thought it was going to be boring, but it was really fun.” Exeter teacher Liam Fox says the game is a “fun way to explore farm safety”. “It links in beautifully with what we are trying to communicate to the students around the fundamentals of farm safety.” The game also has text to voice functionality, making it work for well-suited to children with low literacy or English as a second language. The website also includes information for parents and lesson plans for teachers. The game can be viewed and played online at www.calmfarm.education.

FOR THE FARMER
Maxam 70-series
Maxam Agrixtra XL
Gold standard Australian farmers are set to benefit from a new tyre technology which its manufacturer has dubbed ‘liquid gold’ Local Maxam customers will soon be driving on more durable and energy efficient tyres, thanks to a new technology developed by parent company Sailun Group. The patented technology – officially known as EcoPoint³ - reduces heat buildup and rolling resistance, increasing both wear and puncture resistance. This all adds up to efficiency benefits for users – including Australian farmers – and increased tyre life. Maxam describes the EcoPoint³ compound, which came about after years of research and development into high-performance rubber materials, as marking
20
“a quantum leap in revolutionising the performance and durability of tyres”. Maxam has a strong presence in Australian agriculture thanks to its heavy-duty Agrixtra tyre range, which also has sizes and models developed specifically for sprayers and harvesters in addition to its core tractor tyres. The company also produces Flotxtra flotation tyres for the agricultural market. Australian farmers will soon see the benefits of this EcoPoint³ technology – the liquid gold, as its manufacturer colloquially refers to it – as it is added to these agricultural tyres. Eric Harrington – Maxam’s applications
and field service engineer for Asia/Oceania - says there will be several benefits users will notice thanks to EcoPoint³. “Compared to carbon black compounds and conventional dry-mixed silica compounds, the EcoPoint3 process provides superior distribution of ingredients during the mixing process,” he says. “This represents a breakthrough in green and low-carbon tyre development, from the selection of raw materials, manufacturing and product life cycle, while significantly reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. “Another benefit is around heat gen-

eration, which relates to the amount of energy that the tyre uses up every time it rotates. “If you generate less heat, you’re using less power, and this leads to a significant saving in terms of energy usage. “We have found a vast improvement in saving energy on our solid forklift range whereby forklifts use less battery power due to this”. EcoPoint³ technology involves a “complicated process” that allows the product masterbatches to contain less filler and minimal impurities, therefore “resulting
in maximum control on physical properties of rubber compounds”. The raw materials used originate from sand, which helps to increase sustainability, as does a low-carbon development and manufacturing process. Sailun Tyre Americas president Ron Dolan described EcoPoint³ as a “gamechanger” for the industry during its global launch in 2022. “We’re thrilled to officially launch EcoPoint³ and see a project come to life after several years in development,” he
said at the time. “EcoPoint³ is a gamechanger for the tyre industry both for the quality of tyre it will produce but also in the way tyre are made moving forward, setting a new standard for the tyre industry in global sustainability in the automotive space.” Australian customers can expect to see EcoPoint³ introduced to agricultural tyres in the next 12 to 18 months. FOR THE DEALER
Deals and dealers
Dieci’s fleet is an attractive proposition
Following on from a milestone year, Dieci Australia has turned its attention to expanding its national dealer network while running a special promotion on a popular item hampton and Mackay – along with the New South Wales town of Griffith and Victoria’s Gippsland region. CEO Pat Italiano says there are several benefits to becoming a Dieci Australia dealer and working with the company’s telehandlers. “The telehandler stands out as a distinctive product, offering exclusive opportunities – especially around parts and service with the regulated requirements in line with Australian standards that keeps you in touch with the customer,” he says. “There is no better time than now for telehandlers – this unique product is coming into its own in agriculture as a highly productive workhorse that offers far more versatility and performance than a tractor, loader or skid steer can do alone. “We have a great relationship with the factory and this is really important for our dealers because it means they will work with us to deliver to your customers.” This highlights one crucial element of the sales and service chain – the link between the Australian head office and the Italian factory.
For any individual dealer, their relationship with the company’s head office also forms a significant part of the overall experience. One of Dieci Australia’s existing dealers is Farm & Diesel, which operates across three locations in northern Victoria. Farm & Diesel founder and managing director Sam Walker says the partnership, which has been in existence for almost a decade, has been enhanced by a strong relationship with Dieci’s head office. “Dieci Australia is very easy to get along with,” Walker says. “They’ve made some good changes that will support the product more in Australia with parts, setting up nationwide outlets in the major cities. “I think all of that will help the end user and give them greater support, and us as dealers as well.”
Images: Dieci Australia
If 2023 was about acknowledging and celebrating its quarter-century in the country, 2024 is all about expansion and continuing the growth trajectory for Dieci Australia. As more and more Australian farmers embrace the value of telehandlers, Dieci is looking to not only grow its customer base but also its dealer network around the nation. Dieci Australia, which specialises in quality, Italian-made telehandlers, already has a strong national presence, spearheaded by its new headquarters in Sydney – a building which only opened last year. The company is an Australian privately owned and operated organisation which has sales and service branches in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, plus a national dealer network to support farmers. Dieci has highlighted several regions in which dealership opportunities are available and which the company is actively looking to fill. There are three opportunities in Queensland - specifically Cairns, Rock-

they sell and their ability to provide customers with a reliable machine that will do the job. All Dieci’s telehandlers are manufactured in the same region of northern Italy as Ferrari and Maserati, including the ever-popular Agri Plus 40.7. While the Agri Plus 40.7 has already become the most popular among Dieci Australia’s agricultural customers, the company is looking to make it even more attractive to buyers. From February, Dieci Australia is running a promotion on the Agri Plus 40.7 Standard and Quick Hitch models. To learn more about Dieci’s Agri Plus 40.7 telehandler promotion, contact Dieci Australia directly. The specifications give a good insight into the Agri Plus 40.7’s power and capability – 125hp, 7.06m maximum reach, and 4,000kg maximum lift capacity. These raw numbers only tell part of the story though, as Farms & Farm Machinery’s independent review of the telehandler found last year. It was described as “Italian flair mixed with a workhorse-like operating system designed for ease of use, comfort and serious engineering.” Its 146-degree dumping rotation was also highlighted, which has been specifically designed to increase the operating angle and is particularly useful when dumping with the boom raised. Another standout feature – and one which is patented by Dieci – is the Single Compensation Cylinder. The telescopic boom – which itself is

made from high-resistance steel – is supported by this cylinder. Located inside the lifting ram, it helps to ensure the load on the boom is always balanced. The entirely electronically controlled, ecological and high-performance FPT engine, combined with the Evo2 transmission, transmits all the required power with reduced consumption. The Agri Plus’ transmission is a torque converter with Power Shift Evo2 shuttle with electric control, including inching with its electronic pedal for controlled forward movement. The gearbox offers six forward gears and three reverse gears with electronic control and a kick down button for when additional power is needed. Manoeuvrability and compactness are also impressive features and the Agri Plus 40.7’s turning radius is one of the narrowest in its category. Inside the cabin, large and curved windows offer a complete 360-degree outside view with uninterrupted visibility, while integrated LED work lights allow better visibility at night.

Soundproofing, adjustable steering wheel height and depth, electric windows and storage compartments, along with six air conditioning vents and an ergonomic seat, are just a few of the other standard features inside the cabin.

OVER THE DITCH
Generations of innovation Nestled beneath the NZ Southern Alps, Glenaan Station boasts a rich and diverse history. Largely made up of steep tussock land and river flats, the 1035-hectare property represents a fascinating array of farming practices, with sustainability at the core. Words by Shannon Williams
Images: Gina Ensor Photography
This unique slice of New Zealand is a fourth-generation property and is home to Paul and Prue Ensor and their three children Juliet, Guy, and Hugh. As well as 6000 merino sheep, 300 Angus cattle and 12 working dogs, salmon spawning is part of life at Glenaan Station, along with high country accommodation and being a thoroughfare to the Te Araroa Walkway.

In more recent years, however, a continued dedication to merino wool, biodiversity and sustainable farm practices has seen an increased focus on the newest business arm: Hemprino. Proudly owned by three New Zealand families (Paul and Prue Ensor, Siobhan and Christopher O’Malley (West Coast), and Harriet and Clint Bell (Canterbury)), Hemprino brings to life a shared vision of

promoting the quality of Glenaan Station ZQ certified merino wool and the use of other natural fibres in luxury apparel. Hemp and merino The story of Hemprino is deeply rooted in this family farm, which proudly produces 16-micron super-fine merino wool, supplying the New Zealand Merino Company’s premium ZQRX brand, as well as Hemprino, a pioneering brand that fuses innovation with sustainable farming practices to produce unique and ethical textiles. The farming legacy The Ensors’ innovative ethos has been a hallmark of their farming practices since its inception. The legacy began with Paul’s grandfather, who was among the first in the region to implement pit silage, enhancing land management. His progressive nature extended to pioneering top-dressing techniques, improving soil quality. This forward-thinking and creative streak persisted through generations, inspiring the family to continue pushing boundaries. “My father did a number of innovative things on the farm as well, so it’s always sort of been part of the family’s makeup to innovate,” Paul says. “We’ve developed a lot of the farm since we took over from my parents, increasing the production of the property by more than 50 per cent. And over the years, we were looking for other ways to use our IP and generate more revenue for the farm. We wanted to work out how we could create a point of difference. So that’s how the Hemprino idea came up.” Paul says passing on a legacy that future

Passing on a legacy that future generations can be proud of is important to the family
generations can be proud of is important to the family. With three children actively engaged in farm activities during weekends and school holidays, nurturing a new generation of farmers that appreciates the importance of sustainable practices is key. “Whenever they’re home, and at the weekends and during school holidays, they’re always out and about helping on the farm,” Paul says of Juliet, 13, Guy, 11 and Hugh, 8. “And that’s always the beauty of farming. You can take your kids to work and teach them as they go and give them some responsibility to do certain jobs. It’s a great place for them to learn about nature and life in general.” Sustainable farming practices At Glenaan Station, the concept of sustainable farming is not just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. The farm adopts a distinctive approach by integrating various species, including grasses, legumes, and herbs. Mixed swards provide their animals with a diversified diet while ensuring better ground cover, reducing erosion and dust. “Healthier animals require fewer chemicals, and efficient grassland management minimises the need for excess fertilisers,” Paul says. The property is also well-subdivided and does a lot of rotational grazing, with most mobs shifted weekly ensuring that areas of the farm are not over-grazed. Paul says there’s a growing awareness about sustainable practices with consumers. “People look at food labels and look at what they’re eating, but they don’t always look at a label on a piece of clothing and understand what’s in it and how it’s made. “Every 25 minutes, globally the apparel industry uses an Olympic-sized swimming pool worth of oil, so we’re all about natural fibre, being biodegradable. At the
end of life, our products can either be recycled and reused or they can biodegrade back into soil. So, it’s not only thinking about where your clothing’s coming from but also where it’s going to end up.” Introducing the ZQ Merino The Hemprino wool is made with ZQcertified Merino Wool. The wool is audited by a third party to ensure it’s produced in the most sustainable way. The accreditation system, recognised globally, signifies adherence to rigorous standards of animal welfare, environmental stewardship, staff wellbeing and community engagement. “We get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of interaction with the brands we have wool contracts with,” Paul says. “You know where your wool goes, you understand why they need that type of wool, and they learn from us how we pro-
duce it, so it bridges that divide between the producer, the manufacturer, and the brand so that they can then help share our story and get consumers to better understand how our production systems work and the benefits of our products versus other generic ones.” The birth of Hemprino The journey into creating Hemprino, a blend of wool and hemp, began with a simple phone call from friends Siobhan and Christopher O’Malley who were exploring the potential of combining these fibres. Intrigued by the idea, Paul helped embark on a journey to determine if it was viable. “A significant development occurred when we received a grant to go to China and study the wool industry there, where we met two of the world’s biggest spinners. “After some attempts at working with

partners overseas, we decided it was best to move our production to New Zealand and started working with Wellington-based Woolyarns New Zealand. “They’re very experienced in blending different fibres. They’re the pioneers of the Perino, the merino and possum blend yarn.” Along with the O’Malleys, the third partner to come into the mix was friend Harriet Bell, after Paul ran into her at the post office sending off samples. “She asked me a whole lot of questions and then about a week later she rang me back and offered to help us get some better traction on the project. “Harriet has great sales and marketing skills, and she’s good at executing projects. So we brought her onboard to help us because at that stage, it was still more of a concept and idea rather than an actual

business,” Paul says. “What we’ve found is if there’s three of you, you’re always accountable to someone else, which gives you the impetus to get things done. “I admire entrepreneurs who do everything on their own because that takes real drive and if it’s only your side hustle, it’s a big ask. But when you’ve got three of you, you can share the workload, you can utilise people’s skills that are in different areas. So that’s been a real bonus of having the three of us involved in that we all have our areas of responsibility, but we’re accountable to each other, so it makes sure that things happen.” Hemprino has an array of benefits. The fibres offer excellent antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, fire resistance, and UV resistance. The fabric softens over time, creating garments that feel more

comfortable with wear and washing. “The most surprising advantage is its suitability for individuals who usually find wool irritating,” Paul says. “The addition of hemp to the yarn makes it possible for people to wear wool garments directly against their skin.” The Hemprino collection officially launched in 2022 and includes the Conscious Crew in various colours, a beanie, and a hoodie. The collection has grown to incorporate accessories such as scarves, headbands, beanies, and neck warmers. “Our fibre comes from sheep that are happy and healthy in their environment, and the result is fibre that is uniform in diameter and performance,” Paul says. “Only the very best fleeces are hand-selected by our highly skilled wool classer to meet our strict requirements for premium quality.”
The property is home to 6000 merino sheep, 300 Angus cattle, and 12 working dogs

Expanded reach Hustler Equipment’s Applic8r sprayer range is available in 680, 890, and 1150-litre capacities, complemented by 890 and 1150-litre front tank options, which can virtually double the spraying capacity operator’s exact needs. Among them are a 100 litre QuickFlush, the 20 litre ErgoMax induction hopper allowing for the pre-mix powder of fertilisers or other chemicals, and the StorageBox. Filling the sprayer can be done through the upper lid or by using the Applic8r’s own pump to fill from a trough or stream using the CoupleUp two-inch suction port. A 280-degree viewable ViziGauge allows easy viewing of the tank level from the tractor seat and the ground. Hustler has used the latest CAD flow simulation technology to create the perfect mix of fluid throughout the tank. Called the MixMax agitation system, which now comes as standard on all models, it can be adjusted from zero to full agitation to keep powders in suspension or reduced to stop excessive foaming. On the application side, a three- to five-section ARAG Bravo control system takes care of flow and pressure requirements. Recognising the growing demand for GPS-guided spraying, Hustler has reinforced its long-standing partnership with

Raven GPS technology, which is ISOBUS compatible, while a display for non-ISOBUS tractors is also available. The ideal configuration can be chosen from three ranges of booms, the manual DuraBoom (six and eight metres), the hydraulic SonicBoom (10 and 12 metres), and the EagleTech boom (14 metres), which features yaw, vertical, and individual suspension. The EagleTech boom also incorporates hydraulic boom dampeners on the self-levelling and end sections of the unit. Beyond the custom options, Hustler Equipment Applic8r linkage mounted sprayers boast meticulous attention to quality control processes. Every unit is produced at Hustler’s main factory in Hastings and undergoes thorough testing and checks. The initial set-up and calibration are personalised to meet the end user’s requirements, ensuring the sprayer is ready to work upon delivery. All Applic8r models are now backed up with the new industry-leading five-year warranty.

The smart and sturdy low-profile main tank is enclosed in a galvanised steel frame comprising a SkidPlate, which protects all the vital components, making the spraying unit bulletproof. The extension feet (used for convenient and safe storage directly on the ground) are now a standard feature, incorporated into the frame, thanks to a lock-nut system on all models. A generous sump size is also part of the design, allowing the operator to spray on steep terrain at low tank level without sucking air and leaving missed patches. Also, the standard 110 litres per minute Comet pump located at the rear of the tank is pushed slightly back and offset, to be adapted on any tractor with no need to trim the PTO shaft. Other standard equipment includes well-thought out features such as an 18 litre clean water tank for hand washing and an integrated toolbox. The 455mm diameter lid incorporates a spill ring to catch any accidental spillage. Multiple options are available to customise the sprayer to the

14 and 16km/h, the 8.9-metre working width will allow the user to cover a larger area and save time doing so. Time is money with haymaking, and this innovative rotary tedder focuses on maximising productivity by covering a bigger area in one pass. The new tedder also promises to harvest a cleaner forage due to its close distance between the wheels and the working tines for perfect adaptation to the ground. The unique rotor lock system makes headland manoeuvring easier and ensures the swath is passed through without destroying its structure. Overlapping rotors guarantee a consistent spread. The 8.9m tedder is versatile and designed to handle New Zealand’s demanding pasture conditions, with the adjustable tine height and rotor speed allowing the user to customise the tedding process to suit different crop types and on-farm conditions. The tedding process sees a greater rotor tilt shortening the trajectory and increasing the angle of spread so the crop is turned over better while drying evenly. By drying evenly, the hay or crops also have less chance of mould or spoilage. An optional front support wheel allows for even better turf protection and is ideal for working across uneven, hilly terrain. Safety covers prevent the machine from hitting obstacles and damping braces stabilise it during operation. The hay tedder can be equipped with a hydraulically folded curtain (on either
end), which drops down to eliminate the loss of green fodder at the edge of the paddock during tedding. The small diameter of the carousels and the stability of the working tines guarantee that the entire swath is picked up, even when tedding on the mower path without the use of a crusher. The robust, hermetic design of SaMASZ gearboxes ensures they are quiet, maintenance-free, and offer a long lifespan.
The suspension system is equipped with a mechanism that puts the machine in a central position when lifting. Tension on the shock absorbers provides additional support. User-friendly features are given a big tick, too, including easy adjustment controls, a quick three-point linkage tractor attachment system, and an intuitive operation, making it suitable for the novice farmer or seasoned operator.

TRENDS AND DATA
Sales summary December’s tractor sales figures have been bolstered by a rush on big tractors, a result which also lifted the total dollar value December saw further declines in tractor sales across Australia with around 1,100 units being sold for the month, which is 35 per cent behind the same month in 2022. This brings the annual figure to around 14,500 units, which is 25 per cent behind what had been posted the previous year. The picture is a little brighter in dollar terms though, with sales values for December being 13 per cent ahead of the same month in 2022. The annual figure ends 14.5 per cent behind the previous year in dollar terms, demonstrating that the biggest declines have occurred in the smaller size ranges. Falls were experienced in all machine categories except for the 200hp plus (150kW plus) range, which was up an incredible 117 per cent on the same month in 2022 to finish off the year 6 per cent behind overall. Much of the activity for larger tractors appears to have occurred in Western Australia, where a late rush to deliver machines by the year’s end has clearly been in play. The small, under-40 hp (30kW) category was down by a whopping 56 per cent for the month and ended the year 30 per cent behind 2022. This ‘leisure’ market has long been considered susceptible to interest rate rises and there is no doubt that buyers have felt the pinch in this regard, particularly in Victoria. The 40hp to 100hp (30-75kW) range was also down 45 per cent on the previous December and finished 28 per cent behind
for the year. Lastly, the 100hp to 200hp (75-150kW) category was down 37 per cent for the month and ended the year 26 per cent behind on 2022 figures. Looking around the nation, all states experienced significant drops again in December. Queensland was down 33 per cent against the same month in 2022 and finished 23 per cent behind for the year. New South Wales had a monthly drop of 35 per cent and ended 27 per cent behind the previous year. In Victoria, the monthly total was behind by 49 per cent while the year’s sales ended 31 per cent behind compared to 2022. Sales in Western Australia were down 8 per cent for the month and ended 18 per cent behind last year. South Australia was down 15 per cent against December 2022 and was 16 per cent behind on the full year. Tasmanian sales were down 30 per cent for the month and 22 per cent for the year, while sales in the Northern Territory finished 19 per cent down for the year. Combine harvester sales finished the year strongly, taking the full year tally to just under 1,100 units. While this was down 7 per cent on 2022, it has been another strong year for combines in support of what has been a big harvest season. Baler sales continued their up and down run, down 20 per cent for the month when compared to December
Sales of 200hp plus tractors provided a late boost to annual figures. Image: Prime Creative Media

2022, however the annual tally was a mere two units below the previous year. Sales of out-front mowers were down by around 9 per cent compared with the same time last year. For some time, the TMA has been forecasting a return to more normal sales volumes following two years of unprecedented activity. The outlook for 2024 suggests more of the same, however with the El Niño effect not currently what was expected, and combined with ongoing supply chain challenges, accurate forecasting is as difficult as it has ever been. Conference confirmed This year’s TMA conference is scheduled to take place on Thursday July 18 and will be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, a venue the association last visited in 2017. Details regarding the event will be announced during the next few months with ticket sales likely to commence in April. This promises to be another great event, so please save the date.

ASSOCIATIONS
The dangerous politics of gun reform As the Commonwealth and the States inch closer to developing the longpromised national firearms register, Western Australia has upped the ante and is about to implement what can only be described as version II of John Howard’s 1996 gun buyback. In early 2024 the WA state government is due to introduce a complete rewrite of its 1973 Firearms Act under the direction of Police Minister Paul Papalia, a former member of the Australian Navy and SASR with two tours in Iraq on his CV. Papalia knows a thing or two about firearms, and in the long-drawn-out process of consultation with stakeholders, including farmers who I represent, cannot be accused of not listening to community views. He is certainly not someone who falls into the category of an ignorant lawmaker. Papalia has made it clear that his aim is to drive down the number of recreational
34
shooters, of which there are approximately 60,000 in the state, along with the number of firearms that they can each legally own. He has made it clear to the firearms community that he believes that fewer guns and fewer people with guns will lead to fewer deaths. It’s a powerful political argument that the recreational community has failed dismally to counter. The farming community has taken the view that firearms are tools of the trade and has negotiated a cap of 10, but we have refused to be drawn into what at times has descended into a US-style right-to-beararms debate. While there is no evidence provided by the government that capping the number of guns held by each recreational, sporting and primary producer licence holder will make any difference to community safety, there certainly is evidence that fewer households with a licenced shooter resid-

ing in it results in fewer firearms deaths. A 2021 meta-analysis, conducted by the RAND Corporation, found that it’s very tricky to pin down the contribution of Australia’s policies to a reduction in gun violence – due in part to a pre-existing declining trend in Australian gun ownership. When it comes to overall homicides in particular, there’s not especially great evidence that Australia’s buyback had a significant effect. A paper by Alpers and Picard (2020) shows the percentage of Australian resi-

dents who were licenced firearm owners decreased from 6.52 per cent in 1997 to 3.55 per cent in 2016 and that the percentage of registered firearms per population decreased from 17.59 per cent in 1996 to 12.57 percent in 2016. To the average firearms owner, it defies common sense to think that reducing the maximum number of firearms they can have to a maximum of five, or 10 for sporting club members and primary producers, would make any difference to community safety, as it only takes one gun to cause a fatal shooting. In simple terms we don’t know if tighter gun laws will lead to a safer community, but following the introduction of the new WA laws later this year we are about to find out. The WA Minister is in effect embarking on a world first, a major social experiment to prove his theory that less is best when it comes to firearms ownership, an outcome
that will no doubt be closely watched by the powerful American firearms community. If Papalia is proven correct and his new laws result in a reduction in the number of licenced shooters and firearms, which then translates into a measurable reduction in fatalities, then he can look forward to many invitations to speak on the global anti-firearms speaking circuit. If however he is wrong, he will be decried as yet another activist politician who uses the power of the state to drive a grand social engineering experiment at the expense of law-abiding individuals and their civil liberties. Globally the results will frame the debate on firearms safety for many generations, while locally the move could well change the balance of power in the state’s upper house. For his efforts the Minister has probably guaranteed the Shooters, Fishers and
Farmers (SFF) Party will return to the WA Upper House at the next election. But the political fallout will not end there, the Liberals and Nationals are also in the firing line, as a vote for the SFF is probably a lost vote for both conservative parties. The problem they both have is any sign of overt support for the gun lovers is likely to lose them support from the much larger community of gun haters, hence their deadening silence over the past 18 months on a policy debate that has captured the community’s interest, not just here but nationally and internationally. For all intents and purposes, the opposition parties are like bunnies in the spotlight, paralysed in political fear of being wedged between two competing interest groups, while the government embarks on a social experiment that is likely to be closely watched in the land of the Right to Bear Arms.

Grain handling equipment will form part of BULK2024. Image: photobuay - stock.adobe.com
Bulk back
After a successful event in 2022, the Australian Bulk Handling Expo will return in September The bulk handling industry is a diverse sector – made up of businesses that transport and handle bulk solids. At first glance it might seem that grain handling – the element most relevant to the agricultural sector – may not have much in common with a major iron ore mine or cement plant. However, they each use similar equipment like conveyors, silos, hoppers, and more to move their materials from one point to another. A range of strategies are being implemented across the country to help address the issue of labour shortages, but there is no silver bullet. It has led many organisations to begin looking at innovations like autonomous machinery to help increase their efficiencies as much as possible, whether it’s a port, mine, or manufacturer. The Australian Bulk Handling Expo (BULK2024) plans to bring this diverse industry together under the one roof in September. Located at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, the event aims to help spread industrial knowledge, showcase the latest technologies and innovations and provide an opportunity to network with likeminded peers. BULK2024 show director Lauren Chartres says the event is the only dedicated Australian expo for producers of bulk commodities such as grain and animal feed. “The bulk handling industry is a vital part of Australia’s economy, with a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share,” she says. “To have all these exhibitors under one roof is not only a great place for business
Australian Bulk Handling 2022. Image: Prime Creative Media
opportunities, but a fantastic occasion to network within this essential industry.” BULK2024 is aimed at bulk commodity producers who are looking to run their businesses more efficiently and keep one step ahead of the competition. To ensure they can do that, the latest in equipment will be on display, including conveyors, silos, motors and drives, belt scrapers, container tipplers, dust control systems and weighing or level measuring products. Attendees will have the chance to connect with industry leaders and innovators on the show floor and at various networking opportunities at the show. The expo will be held in conjunction with one of Australia’s biggest transport, logistics and supply chain events, MEG-
ATRANS2024, with one ticket entry for access to both exhibitions. It will also host the 2024 Australian Bulk Handling Awards, and nominations are currently open. “We’re inviting everyone to be a part of this game-changing expo – from handson decision makers in the bulk handling industry to CEOs, COOs, regulatory bodies, and government at all levels,” Chartres says. “We’ve seen how impactful bringing the industry together was at BULK2022 and are excited to see the industry continue to grow.” BULK2024 will be held on September 18 and 19 and the event’s website is www.bulkhandlingexpo.com.au

The Bobcat AT450x articulating tractor in use during wine harvest
Sure footed An autonomous, electric articulating vineyard tractor that can recharge itself – it’s been developed, and could be on its way for commercial release product and material transport and other labour-intensive activities. Users can plot the machine’s path using a mobile application, allowing them to plan, execute and monitor jobs on an unlimited number of connected machines. The AT450X can also navigate on slopes with attachments following the ground contour for professional results in one pass, Bobcat says. Operators can control the machine to operate autonomously, via advanced remote control or manually, across various terrains.

Doosan Bobcat has released an autonomous electric articulating tractor designed for work in vineyards or orchards at CES in Las Vegas, one of the world’s major technology expos. The product of a partnership between Bobcat and ag tech software company Agtonomy, the Bobcat AT450X is designed to carry out critical farm tasks autonomously or remotely in compact applications. Farmers can remotely direct the tractor to execute a wide range of tasks, including mowing, spraying, precision weeding,

Able to use vision-based systems to detect objects that might require it to stop or to alter spray patterns, the AT450X is also programmed to swap batteries when it needs to replenish its energy source – returning to its home base and placing the depleted battery back at its charging station. Because it produces zero emissions, the autonomous tractor can also be operated in food storage facilities and other enclosed farm structures. The battery-powered tractor can also lower operating and maintenance costs for owners, Bobcat says. Agtonomy CEO Tim Bucher says the machine, which uses Agtonomy’s TeleFarmer technology, makes the perfect end-to-end solution. “By digitally transforming the equipment farmers know and trust, we can help them combat the daily challenges they face, such as labour constraints and the ever-increasing demand for sustainable farming practices in specialty crops,” he says. Bobcat says it will announce commercialisation details about the tractor at a later stage, with Doosan Bobcat CEO and vice chairman Scott Park saying the company aims to give customers more power, performance and control, helping them to solve their toughest challenges. “By combining our proven equipment with the latest technologies, we are reinventing how work gets done,” he says.

Powerful presence Set to hit Australian showrooms in February, the new generation Mitsubishi Triton boasts greater power and torque than its predecessor models

assist, while a centre airbag also makes its Triton debut. Among the features of the new entry-level GLX are a front engine undercover made of metal on 4x4 and composite on 4x2 models and 17-inch wheels, while the 18-inch wheels are present on the GLS and GSR models. The GLS also has a tray bed liner, heated and electrically adjusted door mirrors, terrain and hill descent control and a keyless operating system. The Triton’s new drive mode system offers seven options tailored to the terrain it is navigating, which work in conjunction with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, which continues to offer 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc drivetrain settings. Additionally, a new Brake Active Yaw Control system employs a vectoring function to further optimise traction and response. This system calculates optimal yaw angles based on current driver operation and road condition, directing torque between

Mitsubishi says its new Triton will have more space, more load carrying capacity and the latest-generation safety technologies when it arrives in Australian showrooms in February. The light commercial utility range will launch with the popular Pick-Up body style, in double cab and club cab forms, starting with a 4x2 GLX Dual Cab Pick-Up, priced from $43,690 RRP, and tops out with a 4x4 GSR Dual Cab Pick-Up Auto, priced from $63,840 RRP. Each unit has a six-speed automatic transmission, and a bi-Turbo diesel engine generating 150kW and 470Nm with a torque curve designed to work from low revs, which Mitsubishi says will give it better low-rev pulling power and make it perfect for load carrying. The new models have a tow rating of 3,500kg – some 400kg more than the previous generation – with a 50mm increase in body width to 1.86m and a 35mm increase in tray length to 1.55m. A six-speed manual option and a cab chassis variant will be offered on some models post-launch, Mitsubishi says. A comprehensive safety suite has been added to all models including forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, cyclist detection and junction

the inner and outer wheels by using the braking system. Mitsubishi’s local arm worked closely with the global Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in developing and proving the new Triton, with the light commercial utility vehicle undergoing rigorous local suspension development and testing. Mitsubishi Motors Australia product strategy project manager Tony Dorrington says utes have traditionally been designed as a workhorse, with a singular purpose in mind. “However, in the last five years, customers expect their ute to do the family duties and the weekend activities, as well as working and towing,” he says. “With new-gen Triton we targeted a similar drive experience to a good SUV, with improved agility, responsiveness and ride comfort, but retaining Triton’s traditional off-road and workhorse capabilities.” Most important, Dorrington says, was steering feel. “We drive long distances and having steering that offers a clearly defined centre-point, to provide directional stability, makes the vehicle less tiring to drive,” he says. “The adoption of EPS has allowed us to reduce effort during parking and lowspeed manoeuvres, which also assists when off-road. At higher speeds, steering feedback is improved. “Finally, we wanted to give Triton the steering linearity, body control, ride and handling experience as close to a good SUV as possible, while retaining its traditional strengths.” The new Triton also features a unique front damper and spring combination and a unique rear shock on the back of the unit – both of which Dorrington says will reduce impact harshness and provide improved body control.

Farmers with lower limb disabilities will be able to continue working, thanks to New Holland’s accessible tractor New Holland has developed what it describes as the world’s first accessible tractor for people with lower limb disabilities. The tractor was developed by New Holland in Brazil in collaboration with three inclusive mobility companies and a farmer who became paraplegic after an accident in 2022. New Holland’s TL5 Acessível is hoped to give farmers with lower limb disabilities the opportunity to work in fields independently. Brazilian farmer Fernando Dalmolin, who is also a New Holland customer, spent 60 days in hospital after being hit by
a falling tree trunk in 2022. He experienced a serious infection after surgery which led to him becoming paraplegic. Dalmolin was involved in the TL5 Acessível’s development and release. “This is just what people with disabilities like mine need to be able to work independently in the field,” he says. “I am very happy and excited to be a part of this ground-breaking project.” New Holland says a Brazilian national health survey reported there are 7.8 million people with lower limb disabilities in that country, with many living in rural communities and able to benefit from this innovation. New Holland Agriculture’s Latin America commercial marketing director Paulo Máximo believes the tractor’s development will be empowering for people with disabilities.

General manager Digby Moullin says McIntosh is not about to slow down either.
“We have more product releases in the pipeline, as we are always looking at ways to support our dealer network and end customers,” he says. One way in which Moullin says McIntosh supports its end customers is through working directly with manufacturers to tailor products not only to Australian conditions, but to the unique conditions of each state and growing region. “We have a dedicated team working on product improvements to suit local requirements, of which many have then been incorporated by the manufacturers into the original designs to improve their performance in the global market,” he says.
Cam McIntosh congratulates John Duncan for over 25 years of service. Image: McIntosh Distribution
“We believe it is extremely important to ensure there are key representatives in each State who can assist with ongoing product improvements, as well as being on-hand and facilitating training for dealers and growers.” McIntosh’s main base – which features production, parts and administration areas – is in Perth, with the company this is supported by facilities including parts warehouses in Adelaide, Sydney and Tamworth. Further dedicated facilities are planned for both Perth and eastern Australia, the company says.

Bright idea ESP Machinery Australia distributes Megabore lathes. Image: ESP Machinery Australia
Specialist machinery Family-owned ESP Machinery Australia specialises in new and used heavy-duty machining equipment, operating worldwide from its base in Melbourne The origins of ESP Machinery Australia begin back in the 1960s, when 21-yearold Graeme Davies completed his apprenticeship in fitting, machining and toolmaking and ventured out on his own. Setting up his business Everlast Steel Products Pty Ltd he started off working on old factory machinery in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine. Davies often said that many of the big companies must have felt sorry for him, because the work rolled in, and it wasn’t long before he needed to invest in a larger premises and better machinery. The 60’s and 70’s were a golden time for manufacturing in Australia. Expansion of the business required the buying of second-hand machines and selling off the old equipment, giving Davies a good insight into the used machinery business. He then developed this aspect of his work to the point where it became a major entity in its own right and he spun it off into a new business, using the initials of Everlast Steel Products to create ESP Machinery Australia. ESP Machinery Australia now positions itself as being Australia’s largest used machinery dealer, with a 5,000 square
metre facility on 12,000 square metre site with four street frontages in Braybrook, Melbourne. ESP Machinery Australia continued to develop and has also branched out into specialised new machinery, particularly the Megabore brand of big bore and heavy-duty lathes, for which ESP is the sole worldwide distributor. ESP retains specialised fitting, rigging and electrical/FANUC (Fuji Automatic Numerical Control) specialists who make sure all used machines are in good working condition before being delivered to clients. Specialising in heavier machinery, ESP’s offering includes: Megabore manual and CNC heavy duty lathes; Proma, heavy duty CNC roll and crankshaft grinders; Radar CNC boring mills; and vertical, horizontal and combination machining centres. The facility has eight OH travelling cranes and can pick up 70 tonnes in a single lift. For more information on ESP Machinery Australia, visit: machineryesp.com
Light up your job site with Atlas Copco’s new HiLight B6+ light tower Atlas Copco has announced the release of its Hi Light B6+ LED light tower, designed to be ultra-quiet. Atlas Copco says that the lamp’s durability is notable, with the light tower equipped with high-performance LED lights that offer up to 50,000 hours of service life. The HiLight B6+ is designed to be easily transportable on a trailer or moved around the job site due to its compact size, lightweight design and two-way integrated fork pockets. It also has specially designed optics offering wide light distribution – illuminating an area of up to 6,000 square metres at 20Luxes, making it suitable for lighting large job sites. Downtime is minimal, with the HiLight B6+ only requiring a simple tool-less service every 600 hours, lasting 40 minutes at a time. With operating noise levels as low as 55 dBA, Atlas Copco says the lighting tower is ideally suited for providing illumination at events or temporary public lighting, as well as enhanced visibility at construction sites located near residential areas. An inbuilt photocell feature will automatically activate the lamps, or the timer can be preset via a control panel. For more information on the Atlas Copco range of lighting equipment, visit: atlascea.com.au
