DRAGONS,

THERE AND BACK AGAIN

ELVES AND WIZARDS

weren’t a part of our quest, or were they?

Four years ago my Sales Manager, Ashley, and I embarked on our first IAA trip to Hanover, Germany. This bi-annual event (which would be cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19) was lauded by our readers and former Editor, Sebastian Grote, as the biggest truck show of its kind in the world. And for good reason. In our last cover story, Seb explained how IAA was the catalyst for the foundation of this publication. So, for me and Ash, we had a rough idea of what to expect but it didn’t truly prepare us for our first rodeo. With only about a year or so experience with Global Trailer, Ash and I tackled the 2018 show our own way. I scrambled from hall to hall for the press conferences and linked up ad hoc with sales for meetings. This was also the first time we introduced ourselves to many of our clients face-to-face, with magazine in hand. The feedback at the time

was overwhelmingly positive and reaffirmed our mission as the first business publication dedicated to the international trailer scene as well as an intelligent resource for executive management across component, trailer manufacturing, fleets and the broader commercial road transport sector. Well, four years later, Ash and I returned to Hanover. This time, though, Ash and I joined forces to complete more than 45 meetings over four days (I missed press day due to being in-transit). While he –Gandalf, the smart one – did most of the talking, I – Radagast – absorbed what we hope will become the major focus of our content plan for the next two years. It was Wingliner’s Johann Strasser, though, who wielded mighty magic at a crowded SAF-Holland stand and surprised us all when he proclaimed Global Trailer to be the best magazine ever.

HONG KONG

Supply chain service provider, EV Cargo, has announced the acquisition of 75 per cent of the shares of Air Express Cargo S.L. from its founding family owners.

The strategic acquisition sees EV Cargo add another important market to its rapidly expanding European platform, which already features 20 offices and over 400,000 square feet of warehousing in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, France, Switzerland and Greece.

The acquisition of Air Express Cargo will also add customer depth and provide access to additional global trade lanes from Europe to US and South America.

Air Express Cargo will be branded as EV Cargo Spain, and the current founder and CEO, Francisco de la Cita, will continue to own 25 per cent of the shares while taking up the role of country MD.

“I firmly believe that by becoming part of EV Cargo, the future prospects for the business in Spain will be enhanced,” he said.

“It will enable us to provide our clients with the high-quality service they have enjoyed while being able to offer expanded services, which in turn will create opportunities to develop the business, attract new customers and drive growth.

“EV Cargo’s global infrastructure, technology capabilities and international freight network will create new and immediate opportunities across different trade lanes, particularly between Spain and South America.”

EV Cargo Vice President, Europe,

Marc Terpstra, was delighted to welcome the Air Express Cargo to the EV Cargo family.

“Spain is an increasingly important market for us as we manage supply chains for the world’s leading brands, and we look forward to quickly developing our full-service proposition across air and sea freight, road freight and contract logistics to serve both existing and new customers,” he said.

HONG KONG

Kerry Logistics Network (KLN Group) recently posted 96 per cent growth year-on-year in core net profit.

The company has released its group interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2022.

Revenue increased by 39 per cent year-on-year to $48,034 million HKD (approx. €6,089 million).

Core operating profit increased by 74 per cent to $3,461 million HKD (approx. €438,787).

Core net profit jumped to $2,372 million HKD (approx. €300,709).

“Despite ongoing uncertainty in the wider global economy and stress within the supply chains, KLN Group reacted quickly and provided innovative solutions to meet our customers’ needs,” said William Ma, Group Managing Director of Kerry Logistics Network.

“We had also taken advantage of the opportunities arising from global supply chain reshuffling and delivered another record set of results.

Comparing continuing operations, the group’s revenue and core operating profit registered growth of 39 per cent and 74 per cent, respectively. Our core net profit almost doubled

from $1.2 billion HKD to $2.4 billion HKD.”

During the reported period, the group adopted a new segmental reporting by carving out the E&E related business from the IL division as a standalone business segment, reflecting the internal management and different strategies of the two segments. The new reporting will provide a clearer picture for stakeholders to review the performance of different operations within the Group.

Integrated Logistics (IL) The segment profit of the IL division in Asia reported strong growth on the back of reopening of borders across countries, easing of Covid-19 restrictions and a pickup in manufacturing and domestic consumption in 1H 2022. Nevertheless, the pandemic prevention and lockdown measures in the Mainland of China have curtailed manufacturing activities, causing an 11 per cent drop in IL business segment profit in the Mainland of China during the period.

E-commerce and Express (E&E) Performance of the E&E segment contracted as Kerry Express Thailand (‘KETH’) in Thailand was caught in a price war during 2021 2H and 1H 2022. Nevertheless, losses have started to narrow since May 2022 and KETH is expected to come close to breakeven by the end of 2022.

International Freight Forwarding (IFF) The IFF segment remained as the growth driver of KLN Group and delivered a segment profit growth of 140 per cent in 1H 2022. Greater China, including Hong Kong,

ASIA & AFRICA

contributed 28 per cent and exGreater China contributed 72 per cent of the total segment profit. The core base of the IFF business maintained its focus on Asia’s export market.

The segment also added Topocean as a new member of the Group in April 2022, further strengthening the Group’s capabilities to capture new growth in the Trans-Pacific trade lane. “The pandemic’s knock-on impact continues to weigh on the global economy while geopolitical tensions had already been dragging down consumer confidence and production,” said Ma.

“Due to ongoing uncertainty, we expect to face a tougher second half year.

“However, we remain optimistic about the Group’s full-year performance for our continuing operations. Thanks to our strong Asia-based position as well as customised and comprehensive logistics solutions, we have proven our ability to turn crises into opportunities and enable our clients to adapt to new challenges. Moreover, the momentum we have created with S.F. Holding allows us to enter new markets and capture crossselling opportunities. Going forward, KLN Group’s business is expected to benefit in terms of scale, coverage and capabilities through further integration and synergies between the two companies.”

MONGOLIA

UK-based mining company, Rio Tinto, has agreed to acquire all remaining shares of Turquoise Hill Resources. Turquoise Hill is an international mining company focused on the

operation of the Oyu Tolgoi coppergold mine in Mongolia. It owns 66 per cent of the Oyu Tolgoi mine with the Government of Mongolia holding the remaining 34 per cent interest. The total consideration of the acquisition to be paid out of existing cash reserves, according to Rio Rinto, is approx. $3.3 billion USD.

If this transaction proceeds as planned then Rio Tinto will hold a 66 per cent interest in Oyu Tolgoi with the remaining 34 per cent owned by Mongolia.

During the transaction period, Rio Tinto will provide Turquoise Hill with a secured short-term liquidity of up to $1.1 billion USD (subject to certain pre-conditions), which would need to be repaid from an equity raising from shareholders in 1H 2023 if the deal acquisition is not approved by shareholders.

Turquoise Hill has estimated that it requires $3.6 billion USD of additional funding in total to complete the project. It aims to address this through a funding plan including renegotiating debt repayment dates, which requires the unanimous consent of participating lenders. The success of this debt renegotiation and certain other funding plans is uncertain and, if unsuccessful, could require further equity contributions from shareholders. The Transaction delivers certainty for the financing needs of Oyu Tolgoi and alleviates any further funding risks for shareholders.

“This Transaction will simplify governance, improve efficiency and create greater certainty of funding for the long-term success of the Oyu Tolgoi project,” said Rio Tinto CEO,

Jakob Stausholm. “Rio Tinto’s offer guarantees Turquoise Hill’s minority shareholders outstanding value through a significant all-cash premium for their shares. After extensive negotiations, the terms of the transaction are final and there will be no further price increase. We look forward to working with the Turquoise Hill Board of Directors to ensure Turquoise Hill shareholders are able to realise the significant and immediate value of the Transaction.”

Rio Tinto Copper Chief Executive, Bold Baatar, said: “Rio Tinto will work in direct partnership with the Government of Mongolia and Erdenes Oyu Tolgoi to realise the full potential of the Oyu Tolgoi project for the benefit of all stakeholders. This Transaction rewards all minority shareholders with an exceptional premium of 67 per cent for their shares and brings the financial certainty necessary to ensure the Oyu Tolgoi project can be developed without having to ask minority shareholders to contribute further significant funds.”

The acquisition will be implemented by way of a Canadian Plan of Arrangement and require the approval of 66.67 per cent of votes cast by all shareholders of Turquoise Hill (including Rio Tinto) and the approval of a simple majority of the votes cast by minority shareholders of Turquoise Hill. A special meeting of shareholders of Turquoise Hill to approve the acquisition is expected as early as possible in the fourth quarter of 2022 and, if approved, the acquisition is expected to close shortly thereafter.

A lack of gender diversity in its workforce and leadership is undermining the transport sector’s net zero carbon targets, according to a new report by the International Transport Forum (ITF), supported by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation.

The study examined the linkages between gender equality, transport and climate change to better understand the development of policies that can achiever both gender equality and decarbonising transport goals by 2050.

The report identified that a consistent approach to incorporating a gender dimension into decarbonising transport policies and improving the gender balance in the workforce would have a significant impact.

It sets out four groups of guiding principles, which include capacity building, knowledge management and communication; gender balance, participation and women’s leadership; implementation; monitoring and reporting.

Specific actions accompany each principle for countries and companies to improve gender equality and decarbonising transport measures simultaneously.

ITF Secretary-General, Young Tae Kim, said the report brings a pragmatic understanding of how the industry has improved gender equality.

“We cannot address climate change without decarbonising transport

and we cannot make our mobility sustainable without addressing the gender imbalance in how we design and use transport,” he said.

“Under my instruction, we analyse all our work at ITF to ensure the most inclusive approach and result possible.

“It is my great hope that this will become the norm worldwide. We are all in this together; we all stand to benefit.”

FIA Foundation Deputy Director, Sheila Watson, said the organisation was privileged to support the report.

“The FIA Foundation is delighted to support this exciting new research with the International Transport Forum to consider the extent to which the vital process of transport decarbonisation and gender are interlinked,” she said.

“This report highlights the clear message that unless there is meaningful gender representation throughout the transport sector, in employment, planning systems, and disaggregated data, then our transport systems will fail us all.”

Transport and logistics company, CEVA Logistics, has announced a new long-term agreement with exclusive European fashion company, BestSecret.

To accommodate the partnership, CEVA Logistics will also be opening a new 80,000-square-metre fulfilment centre in Sulechów, Poland, which will be equipped with a wide range of packaging machines, tote conveyor system, dynamic tote buffer and a storage area with a five-story pick tower.

growth, both companies have developed a modular structure that will allow operations to expand as soon as possible. The capacity of the centre is expected to grow to be at least 1.5 times the size of the existing BestSecret fulfilment centre in Germany.

CEVA Logistics Global Sector Leader for eCommerce, Markus Schmücker, said the relationship between both companies will remain strong.

“Our relationship with BestSecret continues to expand, as we already manage bulk fulfilment operations in Germany and return logistics in Poland,” he said.

“This new agreement not only strengthens our long-standing partnership, but also opens further opportunities to expand our relationships with other services from CEVA’s broad logistics portfolio.

“By managing the Sulechów fulfilment centre, we can actively support our client’s expansion in the European fashion market—a difficult and very demanding market. With leading expertise, our dedicated contract logistics team in Poland is up to the challenge.”

The facility is expected to begin operations in 2023, and together with BestSecret, its on-site team will handle designer garments from approximately 3,000 different brands and then ship them to customers across Europe.

The design and launch of the fulfilment centre is being managed closely between the two companies.

International logistics provider, Yusen Logistics, has opened a new contract

logistics centre in southern Germany. The new centre, based in Altbach, features a 10,000-square-metre warehouse and office space as part of Yusen Logistics’ global contract logistics network which consists of more than 355 warehouses.

The facility will provide the company with extra space and further opportunities for expansion with a considerably large storage area equipped with high racks, and its loading halls feature truck passages for side loading and unloading as well as ground-level access roads.

Yusen Logistics Regional Manager Contract Logistics South Germany, Ivan Spikic, said that by moving into the modern building complex the company will meet the needs of its customers from the local automotive industry.

“Yusen Logistics Germany has grown strongly in recent years,” he said. “The network expansion by opening our contract logistics location in Altbach is important for us because it

allows us to grow sustainably together with our customers.

“It is also necessary to meet the increasing demand in the region and to be closer to our customers.”

Krone said Janke not only enjoys an excellent reputation as a highly competent engineer, but also as a proven team player with many years of experience in the transformation of development areas.

“In the age of digitalisation and networking, the numerous complex tasks can only be solved in a strategic alliance,” said Janke.

“That’s why a statement by Dr Will Rose is also one of my personal favorites:

‘Success is not measured by how high you’ve climbed, but by how many people you’ve taken with you.’”

Alfons B. Veer, CTO of the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group, is pleased with the realignment in the design and development division.

“For decades, the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group has benefited from the outstanding expertise of our long-standing Managing Director Uwe Sasse, who played a key role in shaping the success story of our company,” said Veer.

“In this respect, it was a real affair of the heart for us to find a successor who fits the Krone family business not only professionally, but also as a person.”

Schmitz Cargobull has expanded its S.KO COOL reefer semitrailer product portfolio with a factory-fitted equipment package certified for the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) TSR1 transport operations.

Following confirmation by independent testing institute, DQS, the certificate was officially handed

to Schmitz Cargobull (SC) at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, which confirmed that its semi-trailers meet the requirements of the TAPA TSR1 standard.

TAPA is an organisation made up of manufacturers, logistics service providers, freight forwarders and law enforcement authorities that applies proven methods and procedures to improve the security of valuable assets around the world.

In order to meet the TAPA TSR1 requirements a networked acoustic alarm system has been integrated into SC’s TrailerConnect telematics solution, which triggers an alarm if the trailer is accessed by an unauthorised third party.

Alongside the alarm system, the new TL4 electronic door locking system ensures that goods are protected from unauthorised access.

SC Head of Product Line Cool Freight, Volker Flatau, said the innovative products increase security with the networked infrastructure of TrailerConnect.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers a reefer semi-trailer equipped to the highest TAPA safety standard ex works and to contribute to greater supply chain security,” he said.

“We will remain in close contact with the TAPA organisation and also continue to help shape future enhanced security requirements, so as to provide the highest level of security to our customers at all times.”

Equipment specialist, SAF-Holland, is collaborating with cold chain solutions provider, Carrier Transicold,

on the development of its SAF TRAKr recuperation axle.

SAF-Holland brought Carrier Transicold on board as a partner in 2020 to ensure optimum performance of the e-trailer axle by combining expertise in the areas of development, technology, approval, customer support and service.

Carrier Transicold supplies the recovery system for SAF-Holland’s e-axle, which includes battery packs, control systems and cooling units.

SAF-Holland President Europe, Middle East and Africa and Chief Technology Officer, Christoph Günter, said the relationship between both companies has already brought results.

“We have a very close and dynamic partnership and look with pride at the results of our cooperation so far – the SAF TRAKr has achieved very good results during the multi-year test phase and is now ready for series production,” he said.

Both companies have also already made plans for the future – to provide customers operating with heavy-duty trailers with a complete, 100 per cent electric system with a plug and play solution in the long term.

Carrier Transicold President International Truck & Trailer, Victor Calvo, said benefits from the collaboration will also apply to its customers.

“This partnership between two leading companies in the industry results in a high-performance and reliable solution that will offer a wider choice for our customers,” he said.

“We believe connecting the SAF TRAKr recuperation system to our Vector eCool will strengthen our

Schmitz Cargobull trailers can automatically transfer trailer data from the standardised TrailerConnect hardware to the TIP Insight system, effective immediately.

This enables transport companies that use telematics systems from trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull and services from equipment service provider TIP Trailer Services to decide

freely in which system the data should be displayed.

This uncomplicated and convenient solution is made possible by a cooperation between Cargobull Telematics and TIP Insight: the standardised interface of TrailerConnect was integrated into the TIP Insight system.

“For transport companies, the topics of data standardisation, interoperability and consolidation, and thus open interfaces, are key expectations in order to realise digitalisation,” Marnix Lannoije, Managing Director of Schmitz Cargobull Telematics and Theo de Vries, Commercial Vice President

Maintenance and Repair and TIP Insight said in a joint statement.

“The use of the standardised TrailerConnect hardware in the Schmitz Cargobull Trailer is the most sustainable and economically sensible decision to respond to the increasing demand for digitalisation.

“The TrailerConnect hardware enables continuous analysis of real-time trailer data and forms the basis for networked services, significantly increasing sustainability and competitiveness. Smooth data provision requires both standardisation of data and interoperability of systems as elementary building blocks.

Dixon International Logistics has acquired Monaghan-based Carna Transport Group to further strengthen its presence and ambition in temperature-controlled logistics in Ireland, Europe and the UK. Within the agreement, Carna will continue to operate independently with all existing teams from its current locations in Monaghan and Armagh. Following the sale to Dixon, Carna Transport Owner and Managing Director, Barry Hughes, will be stepping away from the company with his daughter.

“The acquisition of Carna Transport by Dixon International Logistics marks a significant new chapter in our memorable journey,” said Hughes. “We’re incredibly proud of the business that we have created over the past 50 years as a solely owned Irish run operation. That success wouldn’t have been possible without our loyal and dedicated team, some of whom have been with me since day one, our hugely supportive clients and a great network of supply partners across our industry.

“Dixon’s interest in acquiring Carna is testament to what we have built and now creates a path for further growth of the Carna offering, strengthened by a market-leading new owner.

“I wish the team the very best for the future and I look forward to seeing the next exciting chapter of Carna Transport unfold.”

Dixon International Logistics Managing Director, Michael Dixon, was delighted to complete the acquisition.

“Throughout this process we have been hugely impressed with the operation that Barry and his team have built over the years and believe that Carna represents an excellent strategic fit for our business, complementing our market-leading transport and logistics service offering,” he said.

“As a long-standing successful Irish business, Carna has a great deal in common with Dixon and we look forward to working with all the Carna team to continue to grow the business and support our customers.

“Geographically, the location of Carna’s operation blends seamlessly into our own business, enhancing our customer service and allowing best-inclass practices to be shared with our existing Dixon operations in Dublin and Coventry.”

Sarah Kreienbühl will become a member of the Management Board of Kuehne + Nagel International AG and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) on 1 April 2023, succeeding Lothar Harings, who will retire in June 2023.

Harings, member of the Management Board and CHRO at Kuehne + Nagel International AG, will end his long career at the group and retire at his own request upon reaching the age of 63 on 30 June 2023.

Kuehne + Nagel has succeeded in recruiting Kreienbühl (born 1970, Swiss and French citizenships) as a highly qualified leader.

Starting 1 April 2023, she will become a member of the Management Board at Kuehne + Nagel and be responsible for global human resources management, as well as for sustainability, an area of top strategic importance to the company.

DUBAI

Logistics firm, Aramex, has released its financial results for the half-year ended 30 June 2022.

For 1H 2022, Aramex reported a revenue of 2.97 billion AED, down 1.0 per cent year-on-year. The performance drop of the Courier business was offset by progress in the Logistics and Freight Forwarding business units.

Revenue in Q2 2022 declined 3.0 per cent year-on-year to 1.52 billion AED

due to lower Courier volumes.

In 1H 2022, net profit declined by 18 per cent year-on-year to 91.9 million AED which was mainly attributed to softer revenues, and also partially impacted by the exchange rate impact, namely the Lebanese Pound and Egyptian Pound.

Net Profit in Q2 declined 32 per cent to 44.6 million AED. Excluding the impact of write-offs from discontinued technologies and other one offs, normalised net profit for 1H 2022 decreased 13 per cent year-on-year to 96.9 million AED.

“One of the greatest changes we have seen in our business in the first half of 2022 is the change in our revenue mix,” said Aramex CEO, Othman Aljeda.

“Our Freight-Forwarding and Logistics business was the star performer, helping offset the softness we have seen in the Courier business.

“The double-digit top-line growth of Freight-Forwarding, and the growth in Logistics is owed to our strategic investment in expanding our operations

and market share, and boosting our capabilities in that business.

The organic growth year to date is predominately driven by high growth sectors such as industrials, SMEs, Retail and Pharmaceuticals.

“Our courier business is facing industry headwinds. Despite this, we have been able to protect and maintain our gross profit margin.

“The softness in e-commerce activity is a global, industry-wide trend as consumers returned to brick-and-mortar shopping as Covid restrictions eased. We are also seeing rising inflation rates globally, which puts downward pressure on discretionary spending.

“Going forward, our focus is on quality earnings and better efficiencies, by optimising resources, and strengthening our end-to-end product and service offering across Courier, Freight, Logistics, Warehousing, and Supply Chain.

“During the period, we announced the acquisition of MyUS, a global cross-

MIDDLE EAST/NORTH AMERICA

border e-commerce enabler, which is set to bolster Aramex’s cross-border business and expand our geographic reach and footprint in the US, a key growth market. The transaction is expected to be fully completed during the third quarter of this year.”

Aramex Chief Operating Officer – Logistics & Freight-Forwarding, Mohammad Alkhas, said the Logistics and Freight-Forwarding business sustained a remarkable growth momentum as the business focused on capitalising on verticals where Aramex has a dominant position while adopting a solutions-oriented customer approach to attract new customers.

“During the period, we continued our efforts to enable global trade and enhance connectivity, as well as consolidated trade lanes between Europe and the Middle East,” he said. “We also progressed our digital strategy to drive efficiencies across the business including automation, optimisation of storage methods, and wider improvements in our IT and data systems.”

US ACT Research has unveiled positive preliminary reporting on the state of trailer building in the US.

Net trailer orders in August were reported to be 17,700 units, up about 6.0 per cent from July, but a significant 39 per cent higher than the same month last year.

“With 2023 orderboards slowly opening, it is no surprise that net orders in August were on the rise,” said ACT Research Director CV Market Research & Publications, Jennifer McNealy.

“It is equally no surprise that net orders continue to best 2021, given the continued supply-chain constraints, both in materials and labor, that trailer manufacturers are facing. With long backlogs, fleets still want to make sure their orders are in queue, regardless of when they will be filled.

“That said, OEMs are reporting improvements in supply-chain throughput, albeit a gradual advancement. Improved build rates are illustrated in the decline of the backlog-to-build ratio, which has been in the neighbourhood of eight months, but is expected to descend toward the seven-month mark when final data is released later this month.”

US Global logistics provider, Kuehne + Nagel, has announced the expansion of its healthcare contract logistics network in the US with a new facility adjacent to the Indianapolis International Airport.

The investment into the 166,000 square foot healthcare site will support the growing need for distribution facilities that are able to meet strict quality, regulatory and temperature requirements.

Kuehne + Nagel is positioning the necessary infrastructure within key locations – such as Indianapolis – to better enable nationwide distribution and ensure patient access to vital healthcare products.

The Indianapolis site is part of a healthcare logistics campus designed to maximise the scalability, flexibility and reach of Kuehne + Nagel’s customers by integrating transportation and distribution management activities

in the same facility.

In addition, the site will be managed by tier one warehouse management systems, automation and experienced personnel who understand specialised healthcare product requirements with a highly regulated environment.

Kuehne + Nagel Senior Vice President Contract Logistics Americas, Eduardo Razuck, said the new facility will contribute to the success of its customers.

“This latest investment underpins our commitment to healthcare logistics, which we recognise as a significant factor to our and our customer’s future success,” he said.

“We are excited to invest intensely in infrastructure, resources and capabilities in Indianapolis and other key markets.”

Kuehne + Nagel’s expansion in Indianapolis follows similar expansions in Memphis, Tennessee, where the company manages vaccines, and Southaven, Mississippi, where it manages medical devices.

US Transport and logistics firm, TFI International, has agreed to sell nonasset logistics businesses.

Heartland Express is purchasing CFI’s Truckload and Temp Control and Mexican for $525 million USD. In addition to customary closing adjustments, Heartland Express has paid TFI International an additional $24 million USD for TFI to retain pre-closing accident and workers’ compensation claims.

segment of TFI’s Truckload segment and provides comprehensive truckload service offerings, including time definite dry van truckload, longhaul and short-haul freight transportation, reefer transportation and Mexico-based nonasset logistics services.

The CFI TL, TC & MX Business has ~2,000 tractors, ~7,800 trailers and ~2,800 employees. CFI’s Mexican logistics business has a network of nearly 200 C-TPAT certified Mexico carrier partners.

TFI is keeping the Dedicated and US Logistics (non-asset US based

logistics services provider) divisions.

“We are incredibly pleased to announce this strategic transaction which is tremendously beneficial for all involved – a true win-win-win for TFI International, Heartland, and of course the CFI TL, TC & MX Business itself, which is a strong cultural fit with Heartland and will have expanded opportunities to prosper with a leader in asset-based trucking,” said Alain Bédard, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of TFI.

“For TFI, the decision to sell was reached following a thorough evaluation of our portfolio, and aligns

perfectly with our longstanding focus on driving cash flow and ROIC. Specifically, by allowing TFI to concentrate its US operations on higher-return LTL, asset-light logistics, and specialised truckload, this transaction will reduce our capital intensity, with some of the proceeds used to pay down debt in the near term and over time redeployed with the objective of generating higher returns. We thank the CFI teams that are now joining Heartland for their tremendous contributions to TFI over the years and wish them all the very best in the years ahead.”

Heartland Express CEO and Chairman, Michael Gerdin, said: “We are proud to welcome the CFI team to our growing family of companies as soon as the transaction closes. CFI will continue to operate from Joplin, Missouri, under its legendary brand and existing leadership. Together, our companies will offer customers the nation’s third largest asset-based, irregular route truckload capacity and drivers unparalleled opportunity. We have appreciated working with the teams from TFI International and CFI to reach this highly strategic and common sense transaction for the benefit of all parties.”

US FedEx Freight has opened a new 218door facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

“The continued growth in the Phoenix market coupled with our expanded footprint with additional doors provides us the much-needed capacity to meet the growing demand,” said FedEx Freight Regional Vice President, Scott Doleman. This development has brought FedEx Freight’s door count to almost 26,000 this year.

“We’re talking about more than adding buildings or square footage,” said Lance Moll, FedEx Freight President and CEO. “This is about strategically planning capacity increases to better serve our customers in growing markets.”

FedEx Freight regularly evaluates opportunities to invest in capacity growth through door and yard expansions and fleet maintenance shop footprints.

Additional focuses include continually

evaluating the network based on changing market conditions and maximising the use of existing assets (such as collaboration within the FedEx enterprise network to reduce empty miles and provide peak support).

“We will continue to invest in our network that provides the fastest published transit times in the industry,” said Moll. “We have several projects underway to modernise and selectively expand centres to increase capacity over the next several years. We are confident our customers will benefit from these projects in the long run.”

US Wabash has added two dealers to its North American network.

“By further developing our dealer relationships, Wabash can build off of our brands to grow our footprint and further connect our products and services to improve the operations of our customers,” said Wabash Senior Vice President – Customer Value Creation, Kevin Page.

Wabash has been expanding its dealer network for over a decade according to Wabash Senior Director of Strategic Dealer Accounts, Todd Chrzan.

“Both Bergey’s Truck Centers and Allegiance Trucks have extensive expertise and a long history of providing effective transportation solutions to their customer base,” he said.

“We are pleased to welcome them to the Wabash community as we continue to expand our dealer network to provide the level of quality support that today’s customers demand.”

Based in Stamford, Conn., Allegiance Trucks is reported to be one of the fastest growing commercial truck dealers in the country with over 41 locations in nine states.

Allegiance Trucks offers new and used medium to heavy duty trucks, parts, and services, providing a onestop solution to address customer needs, reduce downtime and keep trucks on the road. Allegiance Trucks will be representing Wabash in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island as well as parts of New York and New Jersey.

“As one of the largest full-service truck dealerships on the East Coast, the expansion of our relationship with Wabash, with its portfolio of trailers and truck bodies, better positions Allegiance Trucks to service our customers,” said Allegiance Trucks COO, Chad Schrempp. “We value the opportunity to create a long term relationship with Wabash, because they understand that providing customers the best equipment, parts and services are foundational to our combined success.”

Bergey’s is a family-owned company operating 15 truck centres and eight truck parts locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, as well as a heavy duty parts warehouse in Telford, Pennsylvania. Building off one of its strategic growth areas, Wabash continues to extend its reach and invest in a greater portfolio of offerings, including more seamless digital systems and its newly created Wabash Parts distribution. Launched in May 2022, the Wabash Parts distribution network leverages the company’s position at the intersection of suppliers, dealers, and customers to have the most comprehensive and innovative set of solutions to meet the needs of its customers and partners from first to final mile.

“We are going to continue to make moves to bring customer centricity and alignment to the forefront of our commercial and manufacturing operations,” said Page. “Our organisation is committed to seeking out partners and opportunities that better align with the dynamic nature of how we will meet demand from first to final mile over the coming years.”

US Utility’s Clearfield, Utah, facility hit the 300,000th trailer production milestone when US Foods purchased and received a 3000R Multi-Temp refrigerated trailer in June 2022. “This could not be accomplished without the support of everyone from

the customer like US Foods, to our Sales team, Corporate Office, and the team here at the Clearfield, Utah Factory,” said Todd Smith, Utility Clearfield Plant Manager. “We have a great team that takes pride in their work and are proud to be part of this great milestone.”

Jim Johnston, Director Fleet Management at US Foods, said: “US Foods is pleased to participate in the celebration of Utility’s Utah Refrigerated Trailer Factory milestone of 300,000 units produced. US Foods also celebrates its 23rd year of continuous trailer production from Utility.”

Johnston added: “Utility and Midwest Utility, Chicago have evolved into a unique, trusted and essential partnership that has used a strategy of continuous improvement to produce our highly customised multi-temp distribution models to service our national distribution. This partnership is responsible for development of highly refined products that deliver significant advantages to our business model in productivity, safety, thermal performance, and longer in service life. Utah’s consistent quality and reliable production are a direct result of the passionate and long-term employees and management of the Utah production facility. US Foods offers congratulations and continued support for our friends in Utah.”

Utility Senior Vice President – Sales and Marketing, Craig Bennett, congratulated the entire Clearfield, Utah, factory team for achieving this milestone.

“With all the production challenges we’re facing today, their commitment

to building high quality reefers is the reason we’re number one in the marketplace,” he said.

Utility’s first Clearfield, Utah plant was located at Freeport Center, opening in 1965. It manufactured the 2000R reefer as well as other trailer products. When a new re-tooled manufacturing plant was completed in 1999, the Freeport Center plant closed, having built nearly 100,000 reefers. This new state-of-the-art facility was dedicated exclusively to manufacture a new reengineered refrigerated trailer – the Utility 3000R. The plant featured a moving assembly line in order to boost productivity and product quality.

“Over the last six months, the NSW Government and Transport for New South Wales have been working closely with the NHVR to make the transition as smooth as possible while ensuring the heavy vehicle industry continues to operate safely and productively,” he said.

“On 1 August, we saw the transition of roadside heavy vehicle inspections, investigations and prosecutions and administration services to the NHVR, and I’m pleased to officially open the new Parramatta headquarters.

“Nationally consistent compliance is essential for the safety and productivity of heavy vehicle operators, and I look forward to continuing to work with the NHVR to keep NSW roads safe and our economy growing.”

NHVR Chair, Duncan Gay, said the transition would reduce the impact of state borders on the movement of freight across Australia.

“With staff now based in NSW, we can continue to work towards a national approach to heavy vehicle safety and compliance and improve consistency for operators,” he said.

“The transition is part of an ongoing journey towards becoming a single national regulator, and I’d particularly like to thank the heavy vehicle industry across NSW for their time and feedback throughout the process.

“While drivers will see a new logo on our vehicles and uniforms, they will continue to receive the same services and support, and will need to meet the same safety requirements as they have in the past.”

The 310 NHVR staff will include 270 Safety and Compliance Officers who will continue to deliver services

from more than 200 existing Heavy Vehicle Inspection Stations, safety stations and on-road enforcement sites across NSW.

NSW is now the fifth state or territory where the NHVR is directly delivering heavy vehicle regulatory services.

Government department, Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR), recently updated a B-triple regulation.

In its recent weekly newsletter, the department announced that it has amended the Transport Operations (Road Use Management-Road Rules) Regulation 2009 (Queensland Road Rules) for B-triple road train combinations.

From 9 September 2022, B-triple road train combinations are permitted to travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h, and the definition of a B-triple road train combination in The Queensland Road Rules will align with the Heavy Vehicle National Law.

The new law defines a B-triple road train combination as a prime mover towing three semi-trailers, where the first semi-trailer must be attached directly to the prime mover by a fifth wheel coupling, the second semitrailer must be mounted on the rear of the first semi-trailer by a fifth wheel coupling on the first semi-trailer, and the third semi-trailer must be mounted on the rear of the second semi-trailer by a fifth wheel coupling on the second semi-trailer.

While B-triple combinations can now travel at an increased speed of 100 km/h, Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) said that all other road train combinations

are only permitted to travel at speeds of up to 90 km/h.

After a 13-year tenure, Aramex CEO, Peter Lipinski, has decided to leave the business.

Lipinski will step down at the end of September and Andy Van Der Velde will succeed him as Regional VP Oceania, with responsibility for Aramex Australia and New Zealand.

Global logistics company, Aramex, purchased the Australian and New Zealand operations of Fastway Couriers in 2016, rebranding the network to reflect its position as a key division of Aramex global operations. The Australian network includes 28 regional franchises and more than 800 courier franchisees, while in New Zealand there are 18 regional franchises and more than 280 courier franchisees.

Lipinski, according to Aramex, led the company through a period of extraordinary growth, including the company’s Australian operations rebrand from Fastway to Aramex. He was also instrumental in steering the company through unprecedented change as it navigated the pandemic and the exponential rise in e-commerce.

“After 13 fantastic years with Fastway, then Aramex, I’m looking forward to exploring new opportunities,” said Lipinski. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the dynamic freight and logistics sector and would particularly like to thank the Australian team, including the regional franchisees who contribute immensely to Aramex’s success.”

“With the agility our competence equips us with, we will continue to provide the maximum benefit to our customers and all our stakeholders in any future development.

“At Kässbohrer, we continue to invest in infrastructure as well as safety and efficiency. We have completed our state-of-the-art lowbed factory operating with Europe’s highest capacity, latching cranes, and RIFD system according to industry 4.0 prescriptions in 2019. In the past five years, our infrastructure and manufacturing modernisation investments alone reach more than 40 million euros and we will continue with our investments in the future.

R&D ecosystem and continuous innovations

The awards and nominations Kässbohrer has received over the years reflect its innovation competence. In 2017, it received an award for safety by automating the unloading operations of a bitumen tanker controlled and operated via remote control enabling operators a safer operation.

“Our safety bitumen tankers have been used in Europe’s specialised fleets for years,” said Yilmaz. “Likewise, in the intermodal sector, where we are unrivalled, we won first place in the chassis category with our novel octagonal chassis frame design by solving the problem of torsion and damage to the vehicle during extension operations of multi-functional container chassis which could not have been solved for 30 years.

“This product is currently the most preferred product in Europe. Our recently launched container chassis range at IAA, presents the octagonal structure as standard to provide efficiency and longevity to the operations of a wider customer base.

“Our Multifunctional Rear Underrun Protection Device, which won first place

in the component category in 2021, is a multi-dimensional solution that prevents damage to trailers during operations, especially in intermodal ferry and train loading.

“Moreover, the swap body innovation we realised for our intermodal range, received an award in the body category in 2021. With the first 45’ coil swap body developed based on our lightest chassis structure, we both increase our customers’ solutions in intermodal transportation in the safest way and contribute to their operational efficiency by offering the option of general cargo transportation. Our coil swap bodies are enhancing the operations of our customers Europe-wide.”

Kässbohrer’s digital developments started with DTC in 2014 and continue to develop with K-ADAS, for which the OEM received an award in the smart category in 2021. K-ADAS featured five new innovations for the first time in all truck or trailer ADAS systems, contributing to the development of future autonomous operations.

“All of this, taking Engnuity to the maximum is achieved by the research carried out with more than 150 competent engineers in our R&D operations,” said Yilmaz. “In our prototype centre, we test our vehicles with both component and all vehicle perspectives for strength, acclimatisation, vibration, fatigue, torsional, corrosion, rigidity and pressurisation for hydraulic and pneumatic life tests accompanied by load and road test and data collection studies offering our customers the guarantee that our vehicles are the safest and lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in compliance with all regulations. In addition, with our in-house heat test cabin, we carry out the ATP certification process of all kinds of vehicles, including refrigerated vehicles and tankers, with international standards.

In the last five years, the OEM has been continuously growing to better serve its customers with its local organisation in Europe.

“In addition to our headquarters in Germany and the Netherlands, we have opened offices in Italy and France, and later also in Poland and Spain,” said Yilmaz. “With a young, talented, and energetic team and an organisation that meets the needs of our customers more flexibly and quickly, we are constantly developing both locally and globally. As a company, we benefit greatly from the cultural diversity that follows the expansion of our organisation.”

Investment in services and facilities

In the last four years, Kässbohrer has grown its aftersales network by more than 100 per cent.

“Our entire aftersales network, which goes through a detailed search and audit process, is growing confidently to servicing the vehicles of our diverse customer base operating in all transport sectors, including dangerous goods transportation, general cargo, cool freight, heavy haulage and intermodal transportation,” said Yilmaz.

“For customer satisfaction, their operational efficiency, 97.6 per cent of our aftersales network is established with the competence to serve our customers’ unique needs. With constant improvement and operational excellence targets, we are moving forward in this process to provide maximum benefit to each of our customers.”

among the top choices in Europe for tanker and silo vehicles – and in the top three in Germany. This success is based on continuous development with Enginuity and lean principles.

Similarly, the trailer builder strives for continuous development and operational excellence in its spare parts operations.

“In April 2022, we shared with you the news of the renovation of our spare parts warehouse in Goch,” said Yilmaz. “Our main warehouse is expanded by 2,160-square-metres, operating with 156,000 parts. Each customer’s request is answered personally. Since 2009, the Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC), which supports our aftersales services, is constantly updated. Under all circumstances, our goal is 95 per cent availability and delivery within 24 hours.”

Taking Enginuity to the max: New products in tank & silo and lowbed

segments

With competency in dangerous goods, chemical food and bulk transportation, Kässbohrer is

Since the last IAA, Kässbohrer has made 13 innovations in its tanker series ranging from modular chassis design for chemical and food tankers to new light waste tanker series and electrical heating for our Bitumen tankers. At this year’s IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany, the OEM launched a stainless pressurized food tanker K.STL P which is developed for efficiency in operations through its 32,000 litre tank capacity with three compartments for the transportation of different foods.

Moreover, Kässbohrer manufactures the lightest silo vehicles to reduce the TCO for its customers in terms of both lightness and operational efficiency. The K.SSL 45 vehicle, which brings safety, durability, and operational ease-oriented innovations such as new manhole designs, and new discharge cone designs, was introduced to its customers at IAA Transportation.

“As market leader in select Europe countries, in the low-bed segment, Kässbohrer is the proud manufacturer of K.SLL with the lowest platform height, K.SLS for the lightest weight, K.SLA for the most loading options and K.SPA for the most flexible loading,” said Yilmaz. “Through continuous development, Kässbohrer has achieved 24 innovations for better load safety, and more flexible operations as well as a complete option range for meeting the versatile needs of its customers since IAA 2018 alone. According to the demands of its customers, this year at IAA, Kässbohrer launched two new vehicles, its K.SLA RJ with its 770mm loading height, 205 tyres and special chassis design combined with mega fifth wheel height alongside the K.SPH M with double extendable chassis and hydraulic steering axles with turntable mechanism.”

Sustainability, meeting all unique transformation needs, and the ‘unrivalled’ intermodal range The road ahead is a long one that must be pursued with determination according to Yilmaz. “Transformation to more sustainable operations will require a combination of many solutions,” he said. “With our engineering excellence and innovation competence, Kässboher offers every solution to meet the unique transformational needs of our customers.

“Stemming from our extensive experience in longer and heavier vehicle permitting countries, we developed K. SCS X+L, our 14.980mm vehicle which offered from its conception, the dynamic wheelbase application ensuring manoeuvrability in existing infrastructure. K.SCS X+L with the first application of dynamic wheelbase was a nominee in the category ‘Concept’ for Trailer Innovation awards 2021. “Kässbohrer is able to meet all combinations in the LHV concept, from type 1 to 5. An example is our 32-metre combinations used in Scandinavian countries; two semi-trailers can be combined in a single truck with our two-axle dolly vehicle.”

Kässbohrer also claims to be proudly unrivalled in the intermodal product range.

“We are the most reliable manufacturer, especially when the new EU green deal targets that 75 per cent of all road traffic should switch to intermodal operations,” said Yilmaz. “With the entire Kässbohrer container chassis family, swap bodies, and the most robust and long-lasting huckepack products developed with Enginuity, we offer our customers the highest quality, longest lifetime as well as low TCO solutions.

“Thanks to our competence, our 45’ swap body, which was the lightest swap in the market when it was launched, has always offered the most load advantage to our customers. The 45’ coil swap body vehicle was designed and awarded with the lightest chassis design with a coil carrying capacity of 30 tonnes. The test we carried out during the development of our 45’ swap body vehicles are now mandatory tests for certification of all swap bodies, increasing the loading safety of all swaps today and leading the industry in general to a better standard.”

In container chassis, the OEM’s octagonal chassis design which received an award in 2019, is a revolution.

“After 30 years after the introduction of extendable container chassis, we have made the structure operational,” said Yilmaz. “We eliminate torsion and

fracture problems in all extensions and at the same time extend product life. With this structure, we have also improved load stability and ensured load-road safety. Our new series of container chassis, which we launched at IAA Transportation, are now presented with an octagon structure. We ensure that our customers carry out all kinds of container transportation operations in the safest and longest-lasting way.

“Kässbohrer’s competence can also be seen in silo container vehicles. With Enginuity, meeting the needs of our customers when we launched our silo containers, they were already the highest-volume equipment in the industry, again engineering from the start the product that offers the lowest TCO.”

ANDES VOICE OF THE

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a successor two-year arrangement for Peru under the Flexible Credit Line (FCL) in an amount equivalent to 4.0035 billion SDR (approx. $5.4 billion USD) [1] and noted the cancellation by Peru of the previous arrangement in the amount of 8.07 billion SDR in May 2022. The Peruvian authorities stated their intention to treat the new arrangement as precautionary.

The FCL was established on 24 March 2009, as part of a major reform of the Fund’s lending framework. It allows its recipients to draw on the credit line at any time and is designed to flexibly address both actual and potential balance of payments needs to help boost market confidence. Drawings under the FCL are not phased nor tied to ex-post conditionality as in regular IMF-supported programs. This large, upfront access with no ex-post conditionality is justified by the very strong policy fundamentals and institutional policy frameworks and sustained track records of countries that qualify for the FCL, which gives confidence that

their economic policies will remain strong, and they will respond appropriately to the balance of payments difficulties that they are encountering or could encounter.

Following the Executive Board’s discussion on Peru, Kenji Okamura, Deputy Managing Director, made the following statement:

“Peru’s very strong economic fundamentals and policy frameworks—anchored by a credible inflation targeting framework, a flexible exchange rate, effective financial sector supervision and regulation, and a solid medium-term fiscal framework—have allowed the authorities to deliver a comprehensive and

timely response to the Covid-19 pandemic and promote growth. As a result, and spurred by robust external demand, favourable terms of trade, and a surge in construction, Peru’s economy recovered strongly in 2021, registering one of the highest growth rates in the region.

“Nevertheless, the Peruvian economy remains exposed to elevated risks, including

from renewed waves of the Covid-19 pandemic, slowing economic activity in key trade partner countries, the war in Ukraine, tighter global financial conditions, and political uncertainty. The new arrangement under the Flexible Credit Line will continue to play an important role in supporting the authorities’ macroeconomic strategy by providing insurance against tail risks and bolstering market confidence.

“The authorities intend to treat the arrangement as precautionary and exit the arrangement when external conditions allow. The lower level of access requested — 300 percent of quota, down from 600 percent in the FCL approved in 2020 — as part of the authorities’ strategy of gradually phasing out the use of the facility is a reflection of the country’s very strong fundamentals, including the additional buffers built with the accumulation of international reserves, as well as the decline in external financing needs, since the 2020 arrangement.”

FAST FACT

In August 2022, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics reported to hold all the shares in the Peruvian joint venture, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics S.A.C, after Carlos Augusto Dammert, President of the Board, decided to sell his stake of 50 per cent. The company has been integrated into Hellmann’s global network. German business, Hellmann, has been active in Peru since 1992 and created the joint venture with Carlos Augusto Dammert in 1998. In Peru’s logistics market, the joint venture specialised in airfreight export, focusing mainly on perishable logistics. Hellmann aims to strengthen the company’s market position in other verticals such as automotive logistics, also beyond the country’s borders. Jose Luis Moreano will remain general manager and Dammert will act in an advisory capacity.

This follows a IMF consultation with Peru in April. It confirmed economic activity in Peru rebounded strongly in 2021 from its deepest downturn in decades. The strong policy response in 2020 help mitigate the impact of the pandemic and created the conditions for a rapid recovery. Progress in the vaccination campaign allowed a gradual lifting of Covid-19 mobility restrictions. Real GDP rose 13.3 per cent in 2021, supported by robust external demand, favourable terms of trade, and pent-up domestic demand. Real GDP surpassed its pre-pandemic level but remains below its pre-pandemic trend. Labor force participation and total employment haven’t fully recovered. Poverty increased significantly in 2020 and is still above pre-pandemic levels despite some improvement in 2021. Volatility in financial markets has increased amid heightened political uncertainty.

Uncertainty around the outlook is high and the balance of risks is tilted to the downside. Growth is expected to slow to 3.0 per cent in 2022 as external conditions tighten and the policy stimulus is withdrawn. External risks from ongoing geopolitical tensions, a sharp tightening of global financial conditions, extended global supply chain disruptions, and an abrupt growth slowdown in China, Peru’s main trade partner could weigh on growth. Domestically, new Covid

outbreaks could prompt the reintroduction of containment measures, while political uncertainty and social unrest could weigh on private investment. Inflationary pressures could be more persistent, requiring faster tightening of monetary policy. More rapid progress on containing the pandemic, both globally and domestically, and reduced political uncertainty could result in positive surprises.

Peru’s very strong policy frameworks and macroeconomic buffers, further complemented by an FCL arrangement expiring on May 27, will help shield the economy from downside risks. Strong external and fiscal accounts, adequate reserve coverage, access to international capital markets, low public debt, and a resilient financial sector provide Peru with ample buffers to face adverse shocks.

Executive Directors agreed with the thrust of the staff appraisal. They commended the Peruvian authorities for a decisive macroeconomic policy response, sustained by very strong policy frameworks and buffers, that helped mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and support a strong economic recovery. Directors noted, however, that the macroeconomic outlook remains uncertain, and external and domestic risks are still elevated. Against this background, they concurred that the policy mix should strike a balance between responding to rising inflation and managing downside risks to growth, as the impact of the pandemic on employment and poverty continues to be reversed. Directors also underscored the importance of maintaining and further strengthening policy institutional frameworks.

Directors agreed that fiscal policy should remain broadly neutral in the short term but a gradual consolidation, encompassing revenue mobilisation and expenditure rationalisation, including pension reforms, will be necessary to address emerging spending needs while preserving fiscal sustainability. They welcomed the authorities’ steps to clarify policy intentions by aligning the fiscal rules and the medium-term budgeting framework, as well as their commitment to strengthen the Fiscal Council with technical assistance from the Fund.

Directors agreed that further tightening of monetary policy is warranted to bring inflation and inflation expectations back to the target range and help adjust to tighter global financial conditions. While foreign exchange intervention is warranted to contain excess volatility, Directors underscored that reducing its frequency would facilitate market development and de-dollarisation.

Directors supported the gradual unwinding of pandemic-era prudential policies in a context of limited financial system vulnerabilities. They concurred that closing remaining regulatory and supervisory gaps and further enhancing systemic risk assessment will be important to strengthen financial resilience. Directors noted that exploring the introduction of a central-bank digital currency will require a thorough assessment of risks and costs.

The Directors also agreed that a renewed structural reform

Peru’s economy expanded by 3.3 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022, easing from the 3.8 per cent growth seen in the three months leading to March. It was the sixth consecutive quarter of growth in the Peruvian economy, supported by a 4.6 per cent expansion in household consumption as the surge in employees working from home supported consumer activity. At the same time, fixed capital formation rose by 1.2 per cent, amid a 3.7 per cent gain in construction activity. On the other hand, government expenditure contracted by 2.8 per cent, as lower spending in healthcare and defence more than offset higher expenditure for public education.

agenda in the context of the OECD accession process will be critical to mitigate scarring from the pandemic and support a green and inclusive recovery. They stressed the importance of addressing informality in the labour market, especially among women. More effective public services and greater transparency, including through civil service reform and anti-corruption measures, as well as a stable and predictable legal and regulatory environment, will be key to these efforts.

Steps will also be needed to reduce risks from climate change, ease the transition to a lowemission economy, and contribute to global mitigation efforts.

INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS

At this year’s IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany, Krone Telematics set new, underscoring its strategy of making telematics data available wherever the customer needs it. For some time now, Krone has been employing a standard push interface that is open and backwards compatible for all partners. More than 250 outgoing interfaces are currently running, and the volume of requests is significantly increasing.

With the new ‘self-service’ function, simple and transparent data transmission to all connected systems is even more convenient. This is how Krone Telematics customers can both exchange data with each other as well as with third-party service providers or customer-specific applications with just a few clicks. The customer has full transparency to decide which vehicles they want to release data for, over a defined period of time. The customer has full control with just a few clicks, by simply selecting and deselecting vehicles and the desired data packages, ranging from GPS through to EBS and temperature data. The transparency report, which is automatically generated, prevents accidental data leaks and misuse of the customer’s telematics data.

The digital strategy ‘Krone Intelligent Transport Solutions’ (KITS) features digital solutions from Krone and will be combined under this in the future, from data management and telematics products to the increasingly digitised, Krone 360° Trailer Service.

Ralf Faust, Managing Director Service at the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group, explained the reasons for this: “Today, the digitalisation of goods transport involves far more than just telematics products, such as determining the location of the trailer. The integration of telematics data into data management as a whole, and digital solutions, are developing at real pace. For example, our new Load Capacity Management system does not only allow us to monitor images from the trailers load compartment in real time, but also enables us to evaluate them automatically with the help of ‘SmartLoad’ artificial intelligence and thereby communicate any free loading space to the transport management systems. For this reason, in the future, Krone will combine all digital software and hardware solutions into KITS.”

Real-time updates with Shippeo

Thanks to the partnership with Shippeo, the European market leader in real-time transport transparency solutions, Krone was the first trailer manufacturer to provide accurate realtime forecasts of expected arrival times. The collaboration started in September 2020.

Users of Krone Telematics have access to the most reliable ETA forecasts for the logistics sector on the market. These are based on a proprietary, industry-leading algorithm developed by Shippeo that draws on over 200 data parameters. Krone integrates this data into the familiar Krone Telematics portal so that all users can monitor both delivery status and shipment integrity in real time from a single portal. In addition, the status of the individual transports can be easily shared with the respective recipients at the click of a button, in order to enable the best possible communication throughout the entire transport chain.

“Today, many logistics companies still rely on a paper-based system where drivers have to prove that the cold chain has met strict regulations throughout the shipping process,” said Lucien Besse, COO of Shippeo. “With real-time temperature monitoring, user-defined clients are notified as soon as temperature changes become apparent.” This

will help to avoid potentially exceeding the maximum temperatures and allow electronic documentation to be sent.”

Shippeo helps major shippers and logistics service providers to deliver exceptional customer service and operational excellence. The multi-modal infrastructure connects FTL, LTL , parcel and container transport as well as more than 875 TMS, telematics and ELD systems via a unique API. The Shippeo platform provides instant access to real-time delivery tracking, automates customer processes, and delivers unmatched ETA accuracy through a proprietary and industry-leading, in-house developed algorithm. Global brands such as Carrefour, Schneider Electric, Faurecia, SaintGobain and Eckes Granini rely on Shippeo to track more than 28 million shipments per year in 75 countries.

Krone Smart Collect Solar – autonomous and maintenance-free

The Krone Smart Collect Solar (KSC Solar) telematics and diagnostics unit is the practical response to the demand for a mobile, autonomous and completely maintenance-free option for the precise positioning of vehicles

and mobile units. The compact KSC Solar offers tracking via GPS for all vehicles and units that are not equipped with a permanent power supply to operate a telematics box. The solar module integrated into the housing is used to generate power, which supplies the internally installed battery. This charging process is supported by a supercapacitor, which also operates reliably at both very low and very high temperatures (-20°C to +60°C).

The KSC Solar transmits the generated data to the respective customised Krone Telematics portal. Since not only the vehicles, but also transport companies and dispatchers are constantly on the move, Krone also provides this data for mobile use via the Telematics App.

The data normally has to be integrated into additional systems, be it a transport management system (TMS), a forwarding software or an expense module integrated into the accounting software. To make sure that nothing prevents the information from being bundled in one place and made available to end customers, the Krone Telematics Portal users can administer the data run autonomously via drag & drop using the Krone Push API. The Krone Telematics team is always available to provide customised solutions to meet the requirements of more complex individual solutions.

KSC Solar – a new standard for swap systems

Krone Smart Collect Solar can be used in a wide range of applications, wherever a self-sufficient and reliable GPS system is required. In particular, swap systems are typically in transit for days on motorways and the rail network before they reach their destination. The system also uses different vehicles for transporting swap bodies. The KCS Solar can then precisely track these vehicles. The swap body no longer needs to be manually assigned to the vehicle currently operated, since the system is permanently mounted on the superstructure and the location is always kept up to date and can be reliably tracked – no matter what additional systems are

TELEMATICS

used. This speeds up dispatching swap bodies and avoids unnecessary downtime. As a result, swap bodies are no longer overlooked.

The KSC Solar is very easy to install and can be fitted on site in the vehicle fleets. The compact box (230 mm x 130 mm x 21 mm) is secured with just four screws or four rivets. Its size and design make it ideal for mounting within the existing beading on the roof of Krone swap boxes. This ensures reliable protection, even from hanging branches. The low overall height makes it easy to mount on the front wall of swap bodies and trailers. The KSC solar will be offered factory-installed for new swap bodies and as a ready-to-install retrofit kit.

Krone 360° Trailer Service puts digitalisation in the spotlight

Ralf Faust, Managing Director Service at the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group, has elaborated on this strategy: “Across the entire Krone 360° Trailer Service, the focus is on digitalisation and networking with our customers, not just this year but in the years to come. Every day, we strive to open up new, better options to our customers, to expand the service and to offer as many themes, data and products in as digital a means as possible, as well as making the products available to order digitally.”

A key component of the Krone 360° Trailer Service is the new digital strategy, KITS. All digital solutions from KRONE are to be combined under this in the future, from data management and telematics products to the increasingly digitised service components. The Krone 360° Trailer Service start as soon as the Krone vehicle is delivered whether that is with or without telematics: The vehicle data is available digitally in the ‘My Krone’ service portal. In addition, important data and delivery and processing is stored here digitally, so as to reduce the processing effort.

Spare parts service – the Krone Spare Parts Online Shop

The Krone spare parts service is also characterised by digitalisation and telematics.

A typical example of this is tracking a spare part on its way to the customer – this is a new feature at Krone. In the Krone Spare Parts online shop, around 70,000 spare parts are available for order. Graphics are shown for all available parts in the online shop, so that they can be identified easily and with as much certainty as possible. Many thousands of spare parts now have additional photos or renderings.

One further aspect that has been simplified is that customers can upload their vehicles to the ‘My Krone’ area to make ordering even easier. Just click on the desired vehicle and then choose from the suitable spare parts – a popular service which, in its current state, is ahead of the game in the trailer industry. That is why almost 70 per cent of orders are now processed via the online shop. However, Krone experts are still available by telephone or email when it comes to parts that need to be explained, perhaps if they are electronic items, or in the event of technical queries.

But spare parts can now even be ordered from the Krone Spare Parts Shop without a vehicle identification number. The best way to do this is via the item number, item description or by selecting a photo. Once the item has been

34 / GLOBAL TRAILER / ISSUE 67
Krone TPMS.

selected, it is possible to check whether it really is the right part at a later stage. The “Check use in the vehicle” function can be activated via vehicle identification number.

International reach of spare parts service

Krone is currently expanding the potential and strategic character of the Spare Parts division internationally. To this end, Krone has established subsidiaries and partner companies in all European countries which focus exclusively on the marketing of spare parts.

The new brand, ‘Krone Trusted’, which was launched at the beginning of 2021, Krone is now also offering cost-effective wear parts as high-quality alternatives to the original, which enable cost savings of up to 50 percent. These spare parts can also be ordered digitally via the shop. In light of the very positive response, Krone will further expand this brand in the future.

Round-the-clock workshop network

To ensure that drivers can quickly and easily find the right service workshop anywhere in Europe at any time, Krone works with a welldeveloped service partner network. Through a collaboration with Alltrucks Truck & Trailer Service alone, more than 700 service partners in 14 European countries are available to offer a complete and brand-independent service to

HGVs and trailers. In order to expand the service packages in the area of fleet management, Krone and the service provider ECR Solutions also offer logistics service providers and shippers tailor-made complete solutions for the management of trailer fleets as part of a strategic partnership. This makes it possible to process claims digitally via the Krone order system and not only in the case of warranty: The customer simply logs on to the portal and sends the appropriate images, if possible. In order to purchase required spare parts directly, the order system is digitally connected to the Krone Spare Parts online shop. the required parts are stored in the shop via the shopping list and can be easily ordered by transferring them to the basket. This service is also available as the Krone Claim Care App.

The Krone Service Locator is also available as an app and online, which can be used to quickly find the right workshop while on the road by entering a postcode. The Krone Tyre Locator app includes service partners specifically for tyre handling.

Another service component from Krone is the flexible modular system “Fair Care”, which takes care of maintenance and wear repairs on trailers for a period of 24 to 72 months. Fair Care is available in three practical packages that build on each other: ‘Light’, ‘Basic’ or ‘Complete’. This enables the ‘Tyre’ add-on packages for the tyres, ‘Cool’ for cooling systems and ‘Lifter’ for tail lifts, to be combined as required. Furthermore, there is the additional option ‘Breakdown’ for Europewide breakdown handling. In addition to ‘Fair Care’, Krone has other practical services in its range, including a warranty extension for new vehicles and services related to the Celsineo refrigeration unit, which can also be adapted as required.

Krone Smart Capacity Management – a glimpse inside the trailer

Artificial intelligence can now detect available loading space. Smart Capacity Management intelligent load space detection system, which is now ready for series production, quickly provides dispatchers with reliable information about where there is available loading capacity on a vehicle. In the basic SmartScan configuration, only the images from inside the trailer are transmitted, while the more advanced SmartLoad configuration automates a number of processes using artificial intelligence.

WWW.GLOBALTRAILERMAG.COM / GLOBAL TRAILER / 35
TELEMATICS

Krone Smart Capacity Management employs SmartScan technology to monitor the load compartment in the trailer using a camera and transmits the images to the Krone Telematics Portal via the Krone Smart Collect (KSC) telematics unit. This allows the dispatcher to track the trailer in real time, view the loading area and examine the interior before and after loading or unloading. The dispatcher can use SmartScan to visualise damage, incorrectly secured loads and people. All loading and unloading processes are documented, including location and a timestamp. In the Krone Telematics Portal, both the algorithm and the camera image for each trailer, are shown for optimum control. The high-resolution images allow the dispatcher to immediately identify any damage to the goods and vehicle – even in the dark and when the trailer is closed. It can also start recording new images as needed.

In the higher-level SmartLoad configuration, artificial intelligence evaluates the images and detects possible damage, incorrectly secured loads and people and calculates the available loading space in metres. The system automatically detects the space requirements and load consignments and transfers this information in real time both to the dispatcher as well as the transport management system (TMS).

Artificial intelligence for freight exchanges

To allow transport companies to utilise this information in a targeted manner, Krone provides the data via API for the common transport management systems (TMS) on request. Free pallet spaces as well as other free loading space are then automatically identified and can also be transferred to freight exchanges using the TMS together with the current location. Possible transport orders are also recommended. The Krone Smart Capacity Management allows you to maximise capacity utilisation, which not only gives you a major advantage over your competitors, but also eliminates unnecessary (partially) empty runs, which in turn helps to protect the environment over the long term.

Another advantage is the considerable reduction in the workload: thanks to the Krone Smart Capacity Management’s innovative technology, the dispatcher’s task focus is shifted from order coordination to order monitoring.

Krone Telematics Portal – API and App

In order to bundle data from a wide variety of telematics systems on a single

interface, Krone utilises a flexible data structure and an optimised, clear display. No matter what vehicle type, vehicle manufacturer or telematics box is installed, the Krone Telematics Portal prepares the data according to the customer’s requirements. It supplies neutral, standardised data that is precisely tailored to the customer’s needs. The data of all vehicles appears in an identical format, so that standardised alarms, workflows and reports are easily possible across a variety of data sources.

Krone Telematics Portal – complete control, all the time

The Krone Telematics Portal is distinguished by its intuitive usability, thanks to icons, colours and information that is immediately visible. It also guides each user through the comprehensive functions in a clear and comprehensible manner. The versatile setting options range from assigning rights to users through to live alarms at the vehicle level or for vehicle groups through to customisable reports and customer-specific extensions.

Users can easily determine the current status of their vehicles and units at first glance. This data includes the position, the current temperature in the freight compartment, the door status, the coupling status of the tractor unit, tyre pressures or even indications from the brake system and the refrigeration unit. This keeps users up to date on whether their transports are running smoothly or whether

preventive action is necessary. The Krone Telematics Portal’s web-based interface makes it available immediately and from anywhere, without any installations.

The Krone Push API

This flexible software architecture is continuously expanded, according to customer demands. The Krone Push API supplies the desired data to any other provider to do this. This allows users to access the data where they need it and avoids isolated solutions. This saves time and resources, which the customers can devote to their actual goal: ensuring perfect transportation.

The Krone Telematics App is ready for use anywhere

The Krone Telematics App for iOS and Android increases Krone’s ability to monitor and control vehicles from everywhere. The app reports alarms through push notifications, makes it possible to control the refrigeration unit and even enables access control for vehicles equipped with the Krone Door Protect system.

To ensure data security and availability at all times, specialists work around the clock in Krone’s dedicated data centre, continuously maintaining standards at the highest level available.

Krone TPMS – the smart tyre pressure monitoring system

From 6 July 2024, active tyre pressure

monitoring systems will be required by law, for all commercial trailers over 3.5 tonnes. For this reason, Krone has developed the Krone Smart Tyre Monitoring System (TPMS), which can already be installed in all vehicles.

The Krone Smart TPMS transmits both tyre pressure data and current temperatures from inside the individual wheels. This data is displayed to the driver in the tractor unit and sent over-the-air to the fleet manager at the same time. The efficiency of the fleet can be increased by this overview of the entire fleet. The correct tyre pressure reduces fuel consumption and thus also CO2 emissions. Likewise, expensive follow-up costs, such as increased tyre wear due to incorrect inflation pressures and, in the worst case, tyre bursts, can be avoided.

Reliable alarms in all situations

Tyre pressures are dependent on many factors: the speed of the vehicle, heaviness of the load and geographical conditions (topography). In addition, temperature has a great influence on tyre pressures. In order to be able to evaluate this information independently, the Krone tyre pressure sensors also pick up the temperature data and put it into context along with the measured pressures, the speed and the tonnage of the respective vehicle.

In order to raise the quality of the alarm recommendations to an even higher level, the live data collected is compared with the data from other vehicles using Big Data analysis for each vehicle. Krone then makes the knowledge gained available with the help of dynamic alarms.

Krone Smart TPMS – technology in detail

Each wheel in the trailer has a separate sensor, to determine the pressure and temperature. This data is transmitted via Bluetooth to the Krone Smart Collect (KSC) telematics box, which passes the data on to the tractor unit. In addition, the data can be sent via mobile radio to the Krone Telematics Portal and to the Krone Telematics App, as well as via API to programmes specified by the users.

The Krone Telematics Portal also offers fleet operators the possibility to create their own alarms and thus map all conceivable scenarios during transport. Thanks to continuous monitoring with the Krone Smart TPMS, both a gradual and a sudden loss of pressure can be detected, so that air can be topped up and the damaged area repaired as quickly as possible.

THE SCENE SETTING

WHILE ELECTRIFICATION, SUSTAINABILITY AND DIGITALISATION WERE PROMINENT THEMES OF THIS YEAR’S IAA TRANSPORTATION EVENT IN HANOVER, GERMANY, WE ARE FINALLY SEEING PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS NOT ONLY EMERGE BUT FINALLY INTEGRATE INTO REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS.

For the first time, the event organisers of IAA transformed their bi-annual exhibition concept to embrace the entire transport and logistics spectrum. Such a decision seemed highly appropriate as the 2020 edition which specifically focused on trucks, trailers and componentry was cancelled due to Covid-19. Four years between events is an incredibly long time. The anticipation for IAA Transportation this year was, without exaggeration, highly anticipated as a platform to exchange ideas, promote innovation but more importantly reconnect with customers, colleagues and friends. Never underestimate the power of direct face-to-face engagement because the simple act of shaking hands and saying hello to one another was for many a key takeaway from the show. The Global Trailer team, for instance, met with many industry partners but were also introduced to new contacts and businesses from around the world. Again, there is no adequate substitute for networking in person. Welcome back IAA!

This year, there were a total of 1,402 exhibitors from 42 countries and 230 national and international speakers. That’s an impressive turnout.

“Following on from IAA Mobility, we have successfully developed and reinvented IAA Transportation,” said VDA President, Hildegard Müller. “We are now exhibiting the entire logistics spectrum, ranging from trucks to cargo bikes and

delivery vans to parcel drones. This courage has paid off as the tremendous response from exhibitors and visitors showed that our new approach was the right way to go. Transport and logistics are the lifelines of our society and economy. The new IAA Transportation concept has provided answers to the many challenges that the industry is now facing throughout the world. It became clear in Hanover that our industry is delivering what is needed for a sustainable future.”

This is true. The pandemic really did highlight how important the supply chain is and how vital it is to move critical freight to where it is needed most. What made IAA Transportation particularly significant this year was how front and centre supply chain issues are and that there are remarkable

SCENE

solutions that can be actioned immediately. Some concepts that were theory or very early in their development four years ago, like the electric axle, are now being widely adopted.

The event organisers were ecstatic to report that IAA Transportation 2022 has consolidated its position as the world’s largest platform for the transport and logistics industry – about two thirds of the exhibitors were international companies with visitors coming from 72 countries.

Of the innovations presented championing electrification there was clearly an emphasis

on climate neutral drivetrains. Those heavy vehicle manufacturers demonstrated various electric and fuel cell-based drives along with hydrogen combustion engines. Also, there has been progress with the rollout of kits to replace the diesel drives of buses and trucks to be fitted with new battery drives. The tools to effectively modernise and future proof heavy vehicle fleets has arrived.

Meanwhile, bodywork and trailer exhibitors also presented a wide range of innovations including lighter-weight trailers that reduce a prime mover’s energy requirements.

“Our industry is resolutely driving forward the biggest transformation in its history and this is also making an important contribution towards solving the challenges that society is facing,” said Müller. “The message from Hanover is this: We have the competence and the will to combine better logistics with more climate protection. The transport and logistics industry is now putting their innovations on the road - the climate neutrality mission is now in full swing.”

In addition to outdoor truck and trailer exhibits the event organisers said that around 7,500 test rides took place as part of IAA Test Drives and IAA Cargobike Parcours. A total of 61 commercial vehicles were available for testing out as part of IAA Test Drives and the entire test operation was carried out in a climate-neutral way. Visitors also had the opportunity to test the latest models under real conditions.

Kässbohrer deconstructs the buzzwords

In a refreshing conversation with Kässbohrer Executive Board Member, Iffet Türken, she emphasised the importance of providing innovative trailer designs for intermodal applications. This, she emphasised, is how fleets can truly deliver when it comes to achieving improved sustainability outcomes and pave the way for a more efficient and safer industry.

A true business leader and global citizen, Türken’s proactive engagement with European Heavy Transport Association and its members underlines how committed Kässbohrer is to understanding the needs of its clients and providing the tools they need to overcome the latest challenges impacting the global supply chain.

Case in point, the OEM launched nine new vehicles at what it considered to be its first proper physical meeting since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s fair to say these vehicles are fine examples of engineering and add to a prolific portfolio, increasing efficiency in intermodal operations as well as providing fleets more choice when it comes to liquid transportation and heavy haulage.

Smart systems for commercial vehicles: JOST What better way to show off an automatic coupling system than to put the user behind the wheel of a heavy vehicle simulator. At IAA Transportation, attendees had the chance to try JOST’s KKS innovation via Euro Truck Simulator 2. It was a fantastic demonstration of automatic trailer changeover and what was most intriguing about it was how user-friendly the in-cab interface is and how precise the camera view is. Beside the simulator booth was an actual truck available for a live demonstration. It was clear that this award-winning system saves operators time, eliminates exposure to repetitive strain injury and is simply a smarter way to couple and uncouple. Better yet, KKS is a remote-control trailer hitching solution that automates the entire coupling and uncoupling process, including air, electrics, and brakes. It truly is a groundbreaking innovation at the leading edge of modern logistics. Intuitive to use, it is also ideal for gradually retrofitting to standard trucks and trailers.

44 / GLOBAL TRAILER / ISSUE 67

In addition to KKS, JOST offers other assistance systems to make life easier for truck drivers. The Drawbar and King Pin Finder, a practical support for hitching, can be integrated directly into the dashboard.

The King Pin Finder provides assistance during coupling, thereby enhancing both safety and convenience. This latest assistance system allows the driver to find the ideal coupling height and to manoeuvre the prime mover perfectly. The King Pin Finder assists by displaying a live camera image in the driver’s cabin when driving backwards, making the coupling process considerably easier. On top of this, the system’s intuitive handling assists drivers when changing trailers – thereby preventing accidents and damage to the fifth wheel coupling and king pin, as well as the truck and trailer. In combination with the JOST sensor system, JOST thus offers the ideal safety package.

Sensor solutions for fifth wheel couplings also increase safety. JOST demonstrated the ultra-light fifth wheel coupling JSK 34, which is available with or without sensors. The JSK 34 cast fifth wheel coupling is suitable for two-inch king pins and can reduce the system weight by up to 40 kilograms. JOST has equipped the JSK 34 with a newly developed hybrid bearing to increase driving comfort and service life while also reducing the dynamic load on the vehicle’s frame. This type of bearing combines the robustness and shock absorbing performance of a rubber bearing with the frame-friendly properties of a plastic bearing. As the market leader for fifth wheel couplings with sensors, the proven JOST sensor technology, also available for the fifth wheel series JSK 37 and JSK 42 (KKS fifth wheel coupling), is being used. The JSK 34 with sensors is JOST’s answer to the constantly growing demand for weightoptimised fifth wheel safety couplings, particularly for tankers, silo trucks and vehicles carrying hazardous goods, and sets new standards in this market segment. The LubeTronic 5Point central lubrication system ensures that the fifth wheel coupling plate and the lock jaw are reliably lubricated with a constant amount of grease.

The Modul E-Drive electric landing gear sets standards in terms of ergonomics and efficiency. It eliminates strenuous manual cranking and makes coupling and decoupling the semi-trailer easier. Easy to operate at the touch of a button, Modul E-Drive is ideal for trailers that need to be coupled or decoupled frequently. The landing gear drive also shuts down automatically in the event of ground contact or when the landing gear is fully retracted. Differences in height between the trailer and the tractor can be compensated using the vehicle’s pneumatic suspension or manual cranking in a low gear. The electrical landing gear operates effortlessly at outside temperatures as low as -20°C. It incorporates reliable Modul components and is available in various mounting heights. The Modul E-Drive’s internal drive requires no maintenance. Thanks to the long-term lubrication applied in the factory and the wear-resistant design, life-cycle costs are very low.

TRITRONIC, the trailer management system with radio remote control, offers outstanding functionality and safety for heavy transport.

As for environmentally friendly solutions for lower emissions and greater transport capacity, JOST presented weight-optimised products including an aluminium landing gear, lightweight fifth wheel couplings and the new DCA Weightmaster Plus trailer axle – the lightest in its class. To complete the package, TRIDEC steering systems reduce tyre wear and fuel consumption, while JOST’s biodegradable high-performance lubricant ensures less contamination from grease.

The DCA Weightmaster Plus made its debut at IAA and features an optimised structure of the entire axle which reduces trio weight by 51 kilograms. In combination with the optional Weight Optimiser 27, the air bellows support with a lightweight aluminium tail end structure, further weight savings of 27 kilograms are possible in the trio. The highlight: The wheelhead has optimised weight, wear properties and performance. This includes the new DCA X7 brake, the lightest brake in its segment. The aim during its development was to achieve

ideal interplay between the brake disc and lining, thereby reducing emissions while maximising the payload and performance.

To cap off its innovations, JOST has consolidated support across all digital channels. Whether you’re looking for a spare part, repair or assembly instructions, the JOST website has it covered. Also, the equipment specialist continues to produce its JOST Truck Stop video series for workshops, drivers and industry partners.

Partnering in the interests of efficiency and cost-effectiveness: BPW

It’s a simple but mind-blowing reality that about 75 per cent of fleet operators do not understand their total of cost of ownership. That is a massive number. How can a business manage its bottom line if there is a lack of an appreciation for the costs involved in running a road transport operation? Thore Bakker, General Manager Trailer Solutions & Mobility Services at BPW, said that costeffectiveness is at the root of BPW’s solutions and affects fuel efficiency, carbon emissions and even tyre wear. What made BPW stand out at the show was its position as an industry partner, an organisation that strives to add value to transport businesses rather than just point to the latest innovation on the shelf.

To reinforce this mindset, BPW presented an online amortisation calculator or vehicle operators to determine the relative savings associated with incorporating BPW products and services. BPW currently supports the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO), an EU program to certify trailers on the basis of their carbon emissions (this will commence next year). It is reported to provide more transparency when purchasing a vehicle and is expected to help operators specify more efficient equipment.

It is interesting to note that BPW sees efficiency gains as a joint effort as hauliers, drivers, dispatchers, fleet managers and other associates are intensively involved in development at BPW.

Speaking of collaboration and a shared interest in efficiency, BPW has partnered with Thermo King on the ePower axle-driven generator. Also, idem telematics presented its latest Cargofleet 3 portal which includes maintenance management and a tour monitor that allows the vehicle operator to play out selected data to partners without surrendering its data sovereignty.

The digitalisation of transport, according to BPW, enables total transparency across the entire supply chain. That’s why more and more hauliers are being asked to share the telematics data with their clients. Hauliers do not always have this transparency in mind. Open-system transport telematics specialist, idem telematics, is now making it possible for hauliers to control and specifically share their trip and order data like never before: The telematics portal cargofleet 3 enables

46 / GLOBAL TRAILER / ISSUE 67

trip- and order-related data management for the first time. Trip data can either be entered directly in the portal or transferred from an external transport management system (TMS). For each individual trip, the haulier can operatively monitor the transport and specifically forward data to the shipper or other partners – right down to the continuously updated estimated time of arrival (ETA) and individually selected tracking information. In addition, tripspecific temperature reports and consumption calculations as well as many other data can also be specifically evaluated and forwarded as the haulier pleases.

However, more service and more control doesn’t mean more work. The cargofleet 3 portal enables data evaluation to be configured automatically. This means that alarms can be set automatically for each individual trip (for example, geofencing and temperature alarms). Classic idem telematics: The cargofleet 3 portal functions is an open system that functions independently of vehicle manufacturers’ systems.

“By networking vehicle, driver and freight, the vehicle operator is able to more efficiently organise transport and significantly expand their range of services,” said idem telematics CEO, Jens Zeller. “Nevertheless, it is still crucial that vehicle operators retain full sovereignty over their data and do not become dependent on third-party systems. With cargofleet 3, we simultaneously strengthen the haulier’s service capabilities and data sovereignty. That’s our contribution to the ‘Internet of Transport’.”

In a somewhat surprising development, the new BAX e-truck with the electric axle drive eTransport from BPW was on show at IAA Transportation.

“In the company’s nearly 125 years of history, BPW has always successfully overcome challenging times together with its partners,” said Bakker. “This solidarity, this team spirit, is very special – and we want it to stay a part of us as we continue to drive innovations for more efficiency in transport in the future.”

Another big move at IAA Transportation was the partnership between BOW and the service network Alltrucks.

The Alltrucks service network founded by Bosch, Knorr-Bremse and ZF is enhancing its service and trailer expertise with axles, running gear solutions and e-solutions from BPW. The Alltrucks partners in central Europe will provide BPW mobility products and digital spare parts services from the start of 2023. Vehicle operators are expected to benefit from a faster, safer and closer trailer services.

The multi-brand, full-service workshop concept ‘Alltrucks Truck & Trailer Service’ and BPW Bergische Achsen KG signed an international cooperation agreement ahead of the IAA Transportation. Through this cooperation, BPW will enhance its service networks with Alltrucks workshops in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The cooperation will then be successively expanded throughout Europe. From January 2023, Alltrucks partner workshops and selected existing BPW service partners will offer maintenance and repairs of trailer axles and suspension components to the highest standard: through training, digital services, a simple and smart spare parts service and standardised processes, BPW and Alltrucks will ensure closer, faster and safer trailer services - and therefore more uptime and customer satisfaction.

Specialised Alltrucks partner workshops will also take over the after sales service for BAX, the new brand for electric trucks with a BPW axle drive system. The vehicle with EU type approval and with Alltrucks workshops trained to provide eMobility services, the new BAX 7.5 is ready for its Europe-wide roll-out.

BPW is also supporting Alltrucks with its own spare parts trade network. In this

context, service points will have access to innovative digital services – such as a smartphone app which can be used to identify spare parts in seconds, and which will give in the future access to maintenance documentation and instructions. Upon request, BPW may also provide a digital spare parts warehouse which can be integrated into the existing workshop system or placed on the premises as a pre-equipped container (‘Upbox’): spare parts can simply be picked from the shelves; Through Radio Frequency identification Tags the parts are automatically identified, invoiced and replenished.

“Through the partnership with Alltrucks, we can offer vehicle operators across Europe outstanding, standardised service quality for everything to do with trailers,” said Bakker. “This enables us to guarantee even more close-knit digital efficiency in our solutions and optimal uptime.”

Homer Smyrliadis, CEO and CFO of Alltrucks said: “With BPW, we are strengthening our Full-Service workshop concept with an additional European industry leader in the commercial vehicle sector. This brings us a big step closer to a more comprehensive, efficient and safe mobility concept for transport companies. The commitment of our two companies to provide excellent services has convinced us that through this cooperation we can fulfil the increasing expectations of our customers.”

Schmitz Cargobull leads the way

On the road to IAA Transportation 2022, Schmitz Cargobull was transparent with its impressive series of next-generation trailers and transport solutions which have previously been reported by Global Trailer in-depth. Nevertheless, the elephant in the room impressed with a number of its latest developments which we can summarise here.

For more than 10 years, Schmitz Cargobull has been offering its own solutions in the field of transport cooling units with the S.CU (Semi-trailer Cooling Unit), which is optimally matched with the cooling bodies and the trailer telematics.

As a result. the S.CU modular system is being refreshed. The S.CU d80 will replace the S.CU 1.0. The robust Perkins diesel engine will continue to be used in the S.CU d80, making it suitable for transports to countries with lower fuel quality.

The refrigeration circuit has been completely overhauled compared to the previous model, and is designed to meet the requirements in the mid-range area. New features include a microchannel condenser and a scroll compressor. With the overhaul, the unit has a high cooling and heating capacity for the specific segment and is characterised by lower consumption and quieter noise emission compared to the previous model. The S.CU d80 is only available in the MonoTemp version and should now be available to order.

On the other hand, the battery-electric powered S.CU ep85 with power electronics operates locally emission-free and is specially designed for use in distribution transport. With 15,800 W cooling and 10,500 W heating capacity, it is equivalent to diesel-powered units.

For the S.KOe COOL all-electric reefer box body, Schmitz Cargobull brings together its experience in box bodies, axles, transport cooling units and networking.

The S.CU ep85 is part of the S.KOe COOL box body semi-trailer. With its battery capacity of 32 kWh, an average electrical operation of up to 4.5 hours can be ensured, depending on usage and requirements. Recharging from the power grid is done via the CEE three-phase connection installed on

FAST FACT

A total of 1,402 exhibitors presented at IAA Transportation 2022 of which nearly two thirds were international companies – 260 were exhibiting bodies, trailers and semitrailers and there were nearly 600 suppliers as well. Sixty-eight international start-ups were also present in Hanover for the first time. Six cargo bike manufacturers also presented their new products, making an important contribution to low-emissions and city-friendly logistics.

the cooling unit and takes about two hours. In addition, the all-electric S.KOe COOL is equipped with an electric generator axle that recuperates energy during braking and other processes, and thus reduces the recharging times of the battery via the power grid. This also minimises charging times at distribution centres. Intelligent control ensures that the charge level of the high-voltage battery is kept as high as possible to provide a high level of operational reliability for unplanned standstill situations, such as traffic jams, for example. The power of the electrified axle is specially adapted to the needs of the cooling unit. With the all-electric S.KOe COOL, Schmitz Cargobull has created the basis for ecological goods transport, thus enabling further CO2 reduction.

The purely electric operation of the S.CU ep85 is very quiet, which offers advantages in urban areas, especially for deliveries at night or in the early morning. The electric system also reduces maintenance costs, as there is no need to change the oil, for example.

Another advantage is that through integration into the overall vehicle, the power electronics can be protected in the cooling unit and are not exposed to the weather. In addition, the trailer only weighs around 80 kg more than a trailer with a conventional transport cooling unit. The S.CU ep85 is available in both MonoTemp and a MultiTemp variants.

A particularly eye-opening exhibit was the S.KI tipper semi-trailer with an improved payload capacity of up to 280 kilograms (50kg chassis, 180kg body, 50kg frame).

The weight of the new rounded steel body

48 / GLOBAL TRAILER / ISSUE 67

with a loading volume of 24m³ has been optimised for use on building sites. Weight savings of up to 180kg have been achieved here. The wide flat floor ensures a lower centre of gravity, helping to deliver optimum handling and even wear. The upper lips have been redesigned with an enhanced crosssection to increase vertical and horizontal rigidity, which makes the rounded steel body even more stable. Lateral deformation of the upper lips as a result of load pressure has been significantly reduced, meaning they run a lot better and sliding-tarpaulin-style body covers are now even safer.

The S.KI tipper semi-trailer’s steel chassis frames have always been characterised by an ideal balance between weight optimisation, robust durability and tipping stability in daily use. The fundamental redesign of the modular frame has enabled weight savings of 45-110kg to be achieved depending on the length and frame design. The new modular frame system for all trailer lengths is available in a Standard, Light or Heavy-Duty design depending on

the level of use. Use of the new chassis results in further weight savings of 50kg. Schmitz Cargobull grants customers a five-year warranty against rust-through for the S.KI frame generation in a galvanised design. Painted frames also offer better protection against corrosion. Customers benefit from a high resale value thanks to lower loss of value. Four different frame lengths are available (system lengths 7.2, 8.2, 9.6, 10.5), depending on the application, load level and desired body volume. In addition to the Standard version, a Light version for especially high payload or a Heavy-Duty version for particularly heavy-duty use are also available.

The underride guard meets all the criteria set out in ECE-R58.03. The weight has been reduced here, too, and handling has improved. The folding mechanism allows for easy operation from one side and, when folded up, provides good ground clearance of 728mm. This enables easy manoeuvring up to the road paver. The electro-pneumatic underride guard with sensors for the LED position indicator has also undergone a makeover with optimised mechanics and cable guide.

The sensors record the driving and unloading position, which means that the underride guard can be operated safely from the driver’s cab.

The standard tail light position has been modified for transporting bulk goods and asphalt. It is now available as a version that is 140mm higher and 80mm set back, which creates a greater distance to the bulk cargo during unloading. As a result, the risk of damage to the underride guard bracket is reduced, while taking legal regulations into account.

Production on the new S.KI tipper semi-trailer is scheduled to start at the

end of the Q1 2023.

But wait there’s more.

To prevent overloading in the future, Schmitz Cargobull is making a new on-board weighing system available as an option for tipper trailers. Trailers, as well as roads, are thus subject to less wear and tear, while also saving fuel costs and reducing CO2 emissions. The on-board weighing system allows the driver to determine and document the vehicle’s payload at the location where the vehicle is loaded, and is no longer necessary to drive to a stationary weighing system, which saves time. Improved driving dynamics thanks to the avoidance of overloading increases driving and road safety. The equipment and make of the towing vehicle are irrelevant for the functioning of the weighing system. The on-board weighing system, which can be calibrated (calibration class 4: Bulk material), uses the factory-installed pneumatic suspension systems with electronic control and hydraulic cylinders to determine the current loading weight (payload) of the trailer. This makes the weighing system more economical for the customer than other systems with additionally attached sensors, and also more robust to withstand the tough operating conditions of a tipper semi-trailer. Operation is intuitive, whether via the supplied screen or via smartphone in the beSmart app. The calculated cargo data can be called up by the driver immediately after weighing. The Schmitz Cargobull telematics allow the data to then be transferred and processed further in the TrailerConnect portal.

Now they’re just showing off.

To improve occupational safety and check the load and the area behind the trailer, special camera systems are installed on the tipper. The cargo area camera enables a convenient overview of the load in the trough. This reduces the risk of accidents for the driver as they can track the loading process via the camera

from comfort of their cab.

An additional reversing camera monitors the area behind the trailer when tipping or reversing, providing protection against ramming damage. At the same time the risk of injury to persons behind the vehicle, who are not visible in the side mirrors can be minimised.

As all the necessary operations can be carried out from the cab, a safe and ergonomic working method for the driver is ensured, thanks to the innovative equipment consisting of pneumatic underride guard, electric sliding roof, on-board weighing system and supporting camera systems.

In addition to new safety packages for

Bespoke truck body kits with TSE – Trailer System Engineering

Stephan Girnt, Managing Director of TSE, has established an incredible business. Not only does his team manufacture a fantastic product but the way they’ve innovated their consultation and sales process to be as streamlined and informative as possible is simply staggering.

TSE supplies certified truck body kits for curtainsiders as part of a modular design. Everything from the components to the modules and the roof systems offer many variants including the option to fully customise for specific applications.

The business has 90 employees, at least 1,000 kit variants, more than 300 loyal customers and two production sites in Germany. Better yet, delivery timeframes

are only three or so weeks depending on the project.

“Based on our experience, we offer qualified advice about all curtainsider transport solutions and a prompt delivery of our products,” said Girnt. “Using our truck body kits will allow you to save a significant amount of time and money.”

TSE’s easy to mount body kits are precisely manufactured and include: front wall, rear portal, side option, roof system and subframe. For semi-trailers, and truck and trailer combinations in various applications and industries – suiting almost any transport solution.

The single components and modules can be ordered individually. All common loads securing certificates are available for these kits as well.

“For the front wall, for instance, you will typically have a clear lateral loading area by using the TSE-front wall including the central lift systems as no slat pockets interfere,” said Girnt. “By using side extensions and accepting a slightly reduced side loading path, manual lift systems can be installed. Available for curtainsiders, dropsiders and quick curtainsiders.”

To assist the end user, TSE has compiled a series of simple questionnaires covering kits, subframes, supplement top gate, supplement drop sides, spare parts and certificates.

The ultimate innovation, production aside, has to be the TSE Measurement Configurator.

“The TSE Measurement Configurator shows the possibilities and variants of our kits and offers you a working aid when defining your project,” said Girnt. “ It illustrates the kit, its dimensions in all variants and positions of individual components; facilitates the development/construction of the customer-specific superstructures at the vehicle manufacturer; and supports the construction in the

Mission beyond zero: Krone

German OEM, Krone, presented 11 exhibits at IAA Transportation. Sustainable trailer technology from Krone is even capable of reducing fuel consumption and therefore also the CO2 emissions of semitrailer tractors by 20 to 40 per cent. Krone demonstrated the extent to which electrified trailers can influence the sustainability of fleets at stand C40, with the eCool Liner and eMega Liner prototypes, developed by Krone in collaboration with the start-up company Trailer Dynamics. A powerful e-axle is at the heart of the innovative technology, which supports the drive of the semitrailer tractor and also recovers braking energy through recuperation. The energy carried in the eTrailer is also enough for long hauls of more than 500 km. The Krone eTrailers can be used with any conventional semitrailer tractor with a plug-and-play process. Moreover, the eLiner technology in conjunction with BEV prime mover units contributes to increasing the range of a fully electrified semi-trailer on long hauls of more than 500km.

Thanks to the eCool Liner with Celsineo unit, Krone is taking another step towards sustainability: In the innovative refrigerated semi-trailer, the fully electric Celsineo cooling system ensures that the sensitive cargo is cooled without emissions in closely coordinated collaboration with the electrified drive. Celsineo, a joint brand from Krone and Liebherr, created an entirely new class of cooling systems based on the principle of three plug-and-play cooling modules with the same design, which is now also available in a fully electric version. The 800 V high voltage system in the Krone eCool Liner not only supplies the fully electric Celsineo cooling system, which has an average power requirement of 15 kW in the freezing range, it also supplies the electric drive train of the eTrailer.

The Krone eCool Liner represents another version for sustainable refrigerated transport with the fully electric Carrier Vector HE 19 cooling system. Here, the second trailer axle in the form of a recuperation axle supplies the battery pack installed longitudinally. Through intelligent control electronics, it supplies a fully electric cooling system, so that this Cool Liner runs entirely without a diesel

unit and the cooling system emits no CO2 or particulate matter. Another sustainable effect is the lower noise emissions of the purely electrically run cooling system, which also enables night-time deliveries.

When it comes to the digitalisation megatrend, Krone presented the ‘Krone Intelligent Transport Solutions’ (KITS) with a series of new technologies and services. KITS introduces new standards and highlights its strategy, as a manufacturer-independent platform, to easily manage different telematic systems through only one portal solution. The new standard interface is open to all systems, both incoming and outgoing. for thirdparty providers such as real-time visibility platforms (RTV), fleet management and transport management systems (TMS). With the practical self-service function, simple and transparent data transmission to all connected systems is even more convenient.

More and more sophisticated services from Krone Intelligent Transport Solutions pave the way for the additional automation megatrend. Thanks to the collaboration with the partner Shippeo, Krone was the first trailer manufacturer to provide ETA predictions (Estimated Time of Arrival) in real-time, as part of the scope of their telematic solutions. Another example of progressive automation is the intelligent Krone Smart Capacity Management load compartment detection, now ready for series production, which detects the load capacity and enables more efficient use. The basic level SmartScan surveys the load compartment per camera. In the Krone Telematics Portal, both the algorithm and the camera image for each trailer, are shown for optimum control. As a result, the dispatcher can track the trailer in real-time and see how many parking spaces are currently occupied. The next expansion level of the SmartLoad smart capacity management evaluates the SmartScan images with artificial intelligence and thus automatically records the available cargo space. This prevents unladen trips and also improves the carbon footprint. The Krone Smart Capacity Management can also be integrated in transport management systems and supports fully automated filling of available capacities. Moreover, SmartLoad

52 / GLOBAL TRAILER / ISSUE 67

automatically detects insufficient load securing as well as shifted and possibly damaged loads.

Another digital innovation is the autonomous Krone Smart Collect Solar telematics unit, which operates autonomously and maintenance-free thanks to solar energy. There are also new practical functions in the Krone TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), in which different TPMS sensors, as they are found in mixed fleets, can be integrated. Furthermore, the new Krone TPMS takes account of extreme temperatures, as observed in midsummer and in very cold regions, for the alarm recommendations. This prevents unnecessary alarms from being triggered and disturbances in the transport process.

Automation: the intelligent Box Liner Automatic container Chassis.

With container trucking, it is often unclear ahead of time which container size must be carried. The driver is usually only given this information shortly before loading, and they must then adapt their container chassis accordingly, involving numerous steps, as quickly as possible. Under the automation guiding theme, Krone is breaking new ground here with the innovative concept vehicle Box

The key feature of the innovative Box Liner Automatic is the option of automated pre-settings. The driver can conveniently and safely initiate the setting of the container chassis for the container to be transported by pressing a button on the remote control from the truck cab. Compared to the standard procedure, the new Box Liner Automatic technology from Krone represents a quantum leap. All of the previously required manual activities performed by the driver to adjust the container chassis are now a thing of the past. For the driver, this not only represents physical relief, but also significantly improved safety. At the same time, faulty setting of the chassis is avoided. Last but not least, the new automatic function also positively influences the trans-shipment speed: For the port drayage, the efficiency is expected to increase by about 10 per cent.

EVENT REVIEW

Around 3,600 committed employees worldwide are already working on the future of the transport industry today.

In all its product categories, SAF-Holland is among the top three suppliers worldwide and continues to expand this market position. The drivers of the continuous product innovations are the current megatrends electrification, digitalisation and automated driving.

SAF-Holland is focusing on the key issues of its customers: Safety, efficiency and weight reduction as well as environmental performance. With its lightweight solutions, the supplier enables significant weight savings while making a significant contribution to reducing the CO2 emissions of truck-trailer combinations.

The company has a particular skillset in the development and production of small runs and in application technology for individual solutions for specialpurpose vehicles. Thousands of individual axle systems combinations are possible.

Expanding electromobility and reducing emissions: With the SAF TRAKr regenerative braking axle, SAF-Holland offers a great opportunity for more efficiency and sustainability in the transport industry. The electric trailer axle can be used in all trailers with electrical consuming units such as refrigerated semi-trailers or semi-trailers for construction materials, but also in vehicles with electro-hydraulic units such as moving-floor vehicles or tanker trucks. It reduces or even completely eliminates noise, particulate and CO2 emissions. In addition to the added comfort for the driver, the SAF TRAKr meets all legal requirements for inner-city low-emission and environmental restriction zones. Following the successful test phase in actual haulage operation, the electric axle will go into production and to market before the end of the year.

With the SAF-Holland Automated Coupling System, the manufacturer proves its expertise for the interface between truck and trailer. As an important step towards autonomous driving, automatic coupling automates and accelerates the coupling and uncoupling tasks with a sensor-based process. For drivers, that means

automatically increases the pres-sure. The digitalised system prevents complete failure manufacturer. And if the semi-trailer comes in directly from a journey, the dirty underbody can make it even more difficult to identify the installed products.

AUTOMATION PROBLEM SOLVING WITH

world is throwing at us.’”

According to Tomasiello, drones represent automation in Dematic’s view of the world, and they’re something that may become more transparent throughout warehouses.

“I personally believe that they’re going to replace the task of inspection that humans currently do, and one of their biggest applications would probably be surveys and rack inspections,” said Tomasiello.

“Rather than putting a guy on a scissor lift and sending them up to 10-metre-high racking to inspect a beam, you could send a drone up there.

It could be argued that Australia’s supply chain is in shambles, with international supply issues and driver shortages raising demands and affecting the country’s most productive warehouses.

Dematic Senior Regional Director, Pas Tomasiello, favours the implementation of automation and technology to assist with Australia’s demands.

The uncertainty of Australia’s market conditions, according to Tomaseillo, is a growing concern, but with the help of automation and the use of artificial intelligence, some of the weight could be lifted from the shoulders of struggling businesses.

“Improving the supply chain is very close to Dematic’s core, and the introduction of automation and technology into supply chain and distribution centres in particular is exactly what that’s about,” he said.

“We at Dematic talk about introducing agility, resilience and flexibility into the supply chain and into an operation, and we come at that from a very specific focal point which is automation and introducing it into distribution centres.

“We’re introducing automation into far more aspects of our distribution centre.

“It used to be just the picking system – now we’re introducing automation into the way that product arrives into the facility, how it’s received, sorted, stored on pallets, retrieved from pallets, how it’s been decanted down into individual cases of units and then how we pick mixed cases and units to fulfil an order.”

Tomasiello said Covid has taught the industry to reduce its reliance on labour to keep the supply chain happy, and that’s what automation does.

“It’s not about ‘I’m going to save 10 heads, and it’s got this return now’, it’s about ‘I want to keep my business, I want to future-proof it, I want to be able to run it and I want to be able to deal with the challenges that come with what the

“It’s fast and it’s safer, and they could even be used for stock taking. If you get drones and the introduction of some artificial intelligence within that, I don’t see any reason why a drone could not only count pallets but count products on a pallet.”

Tomasiello said that by introducing automation and artificial intelligence into the workforce, companies can prevent similar situations to Covid affecting them in the future.

“You might have a distribution centre running with 50 people, and if something like Covid happens, you might need to run a second shift all of a sudden. Once upon a time it was easy to go and get another 50 people and run a second shift.

“It’s not that easy anymore, and by introducing automation, you can have 10 people running the distribution centre with the automation. It’s a lot easier to keep the automation running for two shifts and going to find 10 people than it was to find 50.” www.globaltrailermag.com
