ello again! Battery power is going to replace the internal combustion engine in outdoor power equipment. I don’t believe there’s any doubt of that. And although I’m slow to accept new trends – I’m still not convinced I need to learn how to use an ATM – I’ve recently begun my journey into electric OPE, and it’s not been an easy road. The story began with the outlawing of twostroke mowers. I have a very steep section which needs mowing two or three times a week in summer and once every two or three weeks in winter. After several four-stroke mowers died ugly, oil-starved, screaming deaths on that incline, the young fella at the mower shop put me onto a two-stroke and life was good. It was louder and a little fumier than the four-bangers, but it weighed heaps less and slashed through heavy grass, chew toys, garden hoses and even one time a cunningly concealed lamb-shank bone without even trying. But all good things must come to an end, and recently the ’stroker went through that final transfer port which awaits all mechanical systems and was consigned to the scrapmetal heap.

Because I’m all about the environment an’ that, and I can’t buy a two-stroke any more, I decided it was high time I went for an electric outfit. I needed a new line trimmer as well, and there was a deal at the mower shop where I could get both at a great price, so I grabbed the package and bolted. In no time at all I was standing tall and proud with my 60-volt arsenal, ready to kick grass. That’s where things became interesting. I’d done plenty of research and was ready for how quiet the units would be – very – and how I’d be operating with zero emissions – absolutely none – and how my sessions would be vibration-free – smoooove. I was a little sceptical about the mower-shop-guy’s claim, “If you have solar, you even get the charge for free!” (I don’t know about the economics of running a mower shop, but when I looked into the cost of solar at home it wasn’t going to be providing anything free for a decade or so). I was also interested in the claims of ‘no maintenance’ which I’d read so often. It’s early days yet, but it does seem all those benefits are there. But the most important factor for me is grunt. If the mower and line trimmer didn’t

have the muscle I needed, the rest of it didn’t matter. But both do. The mower is self-driven, which I don’t really need, but was fun when the dog sought revenge for the lamb-shank bone and I had some clear ground in front of me, and the line trimmer is bordering on scary – and that was before I discovered both the line trimmer and mower had ‘turbo’ buttons. Lawks-a-lordy! I’m still trembling at the way things got out of hand when I set loose that missile-load of flailing destruction! But what really amazed me about the whole exercise was what the marketing departments didn’t really make clear: how easy the battery-powered gear is to live with. Seriously, if you haven’t experienced how pleasant it is to not have to mess about with fuel, oil, pull starts, air filters, fuel filters and the myriad other little bits and pieces that go with small-bore motors, you’re being a fool to yourself and a burden to others. I’m firmly converted to the electric lifestyle, both indoors and out. Like it or not, you soon will be, too. I’m betting when you embrace the new situation you’ll be as big a fan as I am. The best way to charge for a machine is to use hire rates.

Owning equipment and machinery: asset or liability? WORDS: ANNA TURNER

O

n the surface it makes sense to buy the equipment and machinery you use regularly. It’s got to be cheaper, right? Well, that’s not always the case. The question must be asked on a case-by-case basis, and hopefully this article will help you answer it for your business.

To buy or hire? That is the question!

On the surface it always seems like buying equipment outright is a smart move. Let’s look at the case study for a motorised wheelbarrow. They cost around $230/day to hire and around $4000 to buy. So, if you know you’ll use the wheelbarrow more than 20 times in the year you should be saving money, right? You need to take many other issues into consideration when deciding. The wheelbarrow needs servicing twice a year which will cost around $500 each time, not to mention breakages, float and down time. Doing the sums, it still looks cost effective to buy the wheelbarrow if you’re going to use it more than 30 days of the year. Anything less than that and you’re better off hiring. What about a 1.8T excavator? They range in price from $25,000-$50,000 plus attachments and trailer. Let’s say your excavator, including trailer and attachments, costs $50,000. Don’t forget to add on service and breakage fees. The machine will cost you at least $500 twice a year to service (plus float). And, unless you buy the excavator outright, you need to add on the interest you’ll be paying on the loan. 6

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Hire ground

Let’s compare that to hiring. Hiring will cost around $400/day plus attachments and float. Even if you’ve purchased the machine outright you’d have to use it for more than 130 days for it to cost the same as hiring, so you’d need to keep it twice as busy to make it worth the purchase. Hiring comes with way less headaches and way more flexibility. Hiring is a more efficient way to operate. You are no longer burdened by the need to use that one machine you own; you can hire the right machine for the job. Hire the tiny machine that gets down the side of the house, or that five-tonner to get the job done efficiently. And no need to worry about floating the machines from site to site, the hire company will do that for you. You can have as many or as few machines as you need. Your fleet is flexible!

Do the maths

You’ve probably guessed by now I’m a big fan of the hiring model. Not only do I think it makes sense from a logistics and financial perspective, but most people find it much easier to cost into projects. Many people make the mistake of charging too little or nothing at all for their machine on site. To correctly add a purchased machine into quotes you need to know what it will cost per billable hour to run. That hourly rate must be passed onto the client with a healthy markup. The best way to know what your machine

costs is to track the costs over the year and divide that by the number of hours the machine worked during that time. Those costs include: lease/loan, fuel, service, depreciation, insurance, breakages, float and so forth. When you don’t have those numbers to hand, start with what you can work out. The repayment costs, fuel, insurance, and servicing, then take an educated guess at additional charges you may incur. Divide that by number of hours you guarantee you’ll bill for the machine in a year and you’ll have your cost per billable hour. That rate must go into your quotes with a healthy markup to ensure you’re making money from it. If you own or intend to own the machine, you absolutely must run the numbers above to give you a baseline. However, I think the best way to charge for a machine is to use hire rates. Use the daily hire rate for the appropriate machine for the project and don’t forget to add in plenty of float charges on top. This way you should always be charging an appropriate amount for the project at hand. In conclusion, always run the numbers before you buy a machine. Smaller equipment and machines are usually more cost effective to purchase than larger ones. Be aware that you’ll need to keep the machine very, very busy to make profit from it. Always make sure you add the cost of the machine and equipment to your quotes with a healthy margin; you’re not running a charity. And keep in mind hiring offers much more flexibility that buying.

Planter boxes and garden edging

Many types of planter boxes are experiencing boom times.

WORDS: MARC WORNER

e all love gardens but we can’t always plant out a garden for a variety of reasons. We may not be able to excavate the ground deep enough; or the property may be rented; or we may not have enough room to work with; or our clients may not have the time and/or energy. Planter boxes can be placed anywhere. Whatever the area or size, there’s a planter box just perfect for that space. Consider planter boxes on the terrace, patio, balcony, veranda, indoors, in corners and even in the garden as an eye-catching feature. The shapes are only limited by our imagination, and materials used in their construction vary from reusables to fibreglass, timber, Colorbond, concrete, and plastic.

Versatile

Bend-free planter boxes are gaining in popularity with our more mature population. They’re standard issue in senior-citizen villages which have vege gardens and annual beds lovingly tendered to daily with ease by residents. Even the garden tools they use are tailored to those suffering with arthritis. If space is a constraint, a vertical planterbox garden will neatly fit and augment the look of the space. They can feature in a villa, a townhouse, an apartment, or a large home. Simply grow smaller plants, herbs, veggies or flowering plants and the result is a living wall. The compass aspect of the vertical garden will determine what plants you put in the planter wall. For instance, a south-facing garden would suit ferns and other shade-loving plants, where a north-facing vertical garden is 8

Practical

Planter boxes on balconies are the obvious solution to privacy in apartment living. Run adjacent to the balcony perimeter they save on floor space yet introduce a modern design element to the space. The size of the planter boxes will determine the size of the evergreen plants to use.

TIP: Always go for a bigger size to help ensure you have a healthy privacy screen. Plants hate having their roots being compacted. A very important consideration in this project is the finished total weight of the planter-box garden. Engage with the client’s Body Corporate to find out what weight the balconies will tolerate and are permitted before quoting. Otherwise, it could be an expensive exercise in futility.

Feature pansies in mobile planters to help engage the whole family. Not only can planter boxes be useful additions to outdoors, they can also add ambience to indoors. Bare walls can be converted to feature walls; dull bedrooms can be transformed; living rooms can come alive; patios can have added interest and budding gardeners can learn their hobby more easily without needing a big budget. TIP: Installing planter boxes may be an opportunity to create a short-term maintenance contract with your client over a 12-week period.

A garden edge of timber becomes a problem if the area is predominantly shady and wet throughout the year, because even treated timber will rot over time.

Media

Challenges

The effort of getting the planting media into the planter boxes is generally underestimated. If the building doesn’t have a lift and the job is on the third floor; allow for this when calculating time and labour costs. Windy balconies offer another challenge which can be overcome with the choice of plants, the placement of the planter boxes and knowing the rates of water evaporation from the plants. Scapeworks offers a service where it pumps in the planting and mulching medium for

bigger jobs, both at height and at ground level, around Australia for many tier-one builders and landscapers.

Mobile

Planter boxes on wheels play their part. Think about installing one just outside your clients’ kitchen so they can move it to suit the seasons and their entertainment needs. They can eat what they grow with all the convenience of fresh produce literally at their back door, and children can be encouraged to grow seasonal flowers like petunias and

The best growing media to use for planter boxes is one from a leading supplier. Spend as much as possible on a potting mix. You get what you pay for. The better ones are scientifically designed to provide a rate of drainage correct for the type of plant, and also provide plants with the essential nutrients to get them started in their new home. It also means we need worry less about those first three critical months of growth.

Edging

Garden edging is used to define different spaces in the landscape, enclose pathways, lead one’s eye to other areas and help keep maintenance low. Any long-lasting material can be used depending on budget, landscape design, type of ground, shape of edges and skill of installation.

Feature It is not just a matter of select and forget. For instance, if we laid a garden edge of timber sleepers because the garden had long straight runs, it’s not a problem. It becomes a problem if the area is predominantly shady and wet throughout the year, because even treated timber will rot over time. If, however, concrete sleepers were chosen for that same project, there’d be no problem. If I installed, say, plastic edging snaking through a garden, I must ensure I have it pegged at short distances apart, because unless it’s of a more expensive type, and so thick enough, it will buckle in a short space of time and look like an amateur installed it. It is most likely to work the best as a divider where the plastic edge is almost entirely buried and so less susceptible to deformation. Consider also that a trench is required to be dug to secure this type of edge. So, knowing all the site details will help determine the material used which impacts on budget. TIP: Using taller or wider garden edging gives the opportunity to spread and retain more mulch in gardens. It’s a win-win for client and landscaper.

If edging is used to separate the lawn area from the garden path, it should be flush with the surrounds. If the ground is rocky, it may not be possible to dig down deep enough to secure the best outcome and it could become a trip hazard. Again, check the detail.

Decorative

Painted finishes or galvanised metal last the longest, yet unfinished metal has an attractive rustic appearance for country gardens. A few companies make rubber edging that’s pounded into place, and it’s nearly indestructible as it’s usually made from recycled tyres. Other companies lay coloured concrete edging in different widths and heights, and another common garden edge is bricks. Lay bricks in a shallow trench on their side with the wide side down or stand them upright. The hardest part is getting everything level or deciding on a fall over a distance. Small fences are super-easy to use as garden edging. Many different types and sizes exist, including metal, wood, and plastic, so you’ll find the one that suits your client’s garden’s style.

All the design considerations of conventional landscapes can be applied to xeriscapes.

Xeriscapes Understanding the water requirements of plants and providing adequate moisture will ensure long-term aesthetic quality. WORDS: JOHN GABRIELE

T

here are climatic conditions, government, and community pressure on outdoor spaces to be more water efficient. As population growth continues to surge and the demand on one of our most precious resources increases exponentially, landscape designers are feeling the responsibility to design and construct landscapes that are not just functional, but also take into consideration the environmental impacts green spaces can have on the broader environment and their need for water. Without doubt, plants form the foundation of an appealing landscape composition, and watering is the most obvious requirement to maintain plant health and to keep them in peak condition and looking good. How can we incorporate sound environmental stewardship into landscape design without compromising aesthetic appeal? The answer is in xeriscaping.

What’s in a name?

Xeriscapes are not just focussed on saving water. Xeriscaping is more a philosophy 14

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

of selecting plants and other landscape components to minimise water use and other maintenance activities associated with plant management. The term ‘xeriscape’ is derived from the Greek word ‘xeros’ meaning dry, and ‘scape’ in reference to landscapes, and it’s in regions subject to harsh, hot, dry weather conditions that xeriscaping has become synonymous with landscape design. Xeriscaping often conjures up images of cacti and succulent gardens, and many people hold an unfounded belief that xeriscapes are dry arid unappealing spaces. Nothing could be further from the truth. With some careful planning and correct plant selection Xeriscapes can be lush and appealing. Botanically speaking, xerophytes are plants which have a low water requirement and have modifications and adaptations that give them the ability to not just survive, but thrive, in regions with low rainfall and where atmospheric temperatures can cause excessive moisture loss (transpiration) through the leaves. Of course, cacti and succulents are well documented as xerophytic, however there’s a broad range

of plants, particularly Australian native flora, with adaptations and modifications that assist in surviving harsh environmental conditions. They’re ideal for the Wide Brown Land and are well suited to inclusion in xeriscapes.

Survival of the fittest

Modifications and adaptations include examples such as a phyllodes on acacia species, where the leaf petiole is modified to function as a leaf. Phyllodes have a reduced number of stomata, which, in turn, reduces the amount of water lost through transpiration from the leaf surface. Cladodes are modified stems which function as a leaf by photosynthesising and often have water-storing capacity. Rolled leaves, leaves reduced to spines, and hairy or waxy cuticles of the leaf surface are also characteristic of many xerophytic plant species. One interesting aspect of some many eucalypt species is their ability to use nastic movement and turn their leaf surface at an opposing angle to the sun, thereby reducing the area of leaf surface exposed to direct sunlight and reducing water loss through transpiration.

Feature Mallee eucalypts also have extensive root systems and display allelopathy, preventing other plants from germinating, growing, and competing for available water by releasing biochemicals into the surrounding soil. Some plants open their stomates in the early morning but generally close them by late morning on a dry day, and some succulent plants can absorb water from the atmosphere in the early mornings when dew forms. With a better understanding of the physiology and morphology of plants species, designers can make better decisions on correct plant selection.

Natural selection

Designers can select from a wide range of ephemerals, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees, all of which are suitable for xeriscaping. Selecting plants to meet xeriscape design considerations such as colour, texture and form can be just as challenging for designers as with any other landscape style. Each site will have its own specific microclimate and site characteristics that will determine plant selection for ongoing success of the installation. Australia is blessed with a wide variety of climatic regions and when we begin to understand the natural environment, we are better placed to make informed decisions

The use of sculptural elements strategically placed within a xeriscape can bring a creative element to the space, elevating it from drab to fab. on constructing landscapes that are not just beautiful and functional but are sympathetic to the natural systems that support them. The link between constructed landscapes such as xeriscapes, the natural environment and the need to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the connection with modern landscape design cannot be better said than in the words of Dr Malcolm Calder, Botanist, 1989, who promulgates that: “Unfortunately the ecological diversity, complex forms of adaptation of Mallee flora and fauna, the

role of Mallee vegetation in maintaining soil stability and regulating soil water tables and its intrinsic conservation and scientific values have not been understood or appreciated by the majority of Australians since the earliest colonial days.”

a characteristic of most xeriscapes, however organic mulches such as woodchip or bark can be used, but there will be greater tendency for weed establishment. All the design considerations of conventional landscapes can be applied to xeriscapes. Architectural plants can be used as a focal point and to anchor the design while diverse plant selections can provide a juxtaposition within the design. The use of other landscape elements including rocks, boulders, logs, or other sculptural elements

such as Corten steel, stone statues, artworks and so forth strategically placed within a xeriscape can bring a creative element to the space, elevating it from drab to fab. The goal of creating a landscape that is drought resistant and water wise often leads to the challenging decision of what to do with the lawn. Australians love their lawns and xeriscapes are often designed with the lawn being eliminated, or at least relegated to being a minimum component of the overall design or installed using water efficient

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

varieties such as Zoysia species. Selecting lawn substitutes such as groundcovers which have minimal watering requirements, or incorporating hardscape elements such as decking or paths to reduce or eliminate lawn areas, is another principle of xeriscaping that can assist designers in increasing the functionality of a landscape. This can be particularly useful in smaller urban landscapes. Xeriscapes have significant upsides when it comes to maintenance. The fact xeriscapes have minimal water requirements results in less need for pruning, irrigating, weeding, and fertilising. All these actions actually stimulate plant growth, whereas in a xeriscape it’s all about slow, steady growth, so interventions are kept to a minimum. The principles of xeriscaping can be applied in more temperate, humid climates, although maintenance activities such as pruning may be more frequent. With consumers becoming more environmentally conscious and governments imposing greater environmental restrictions on development, xeriscapes and other forms of landscape design that work with the environment are becoming increasingly popular. Landscape designers and contractors need to increase their knowledge and understanding of environmental issues and incorporate this into modern landscape designs and installations.

reetings reader. I think you might find this chat interesting. In many developments where we are engaged to ply our craft and create a healthy living environment, we are confronted with various complex patterns of unnatural soil development. We can often face physical disturbances such as bulk top dressing, scalping, inversions, layering and often pollution. It can sometimes be the case that without knowing, we’ve created these conditions ourselves. Cast your mind back to when I touched on the importance of decent aeration and good drainage. Beyond compaction layers, lower areas within the landscape and physical restrictions such as pavements and foundations, the free movement of water can often be limited by alterations the existing levels from imported material with various soil textures that lack similarities to the existing profile. Many of these soils can be so unrelated that the horizon layers look more like a sandwich or hamburger rather than a natural profile. Let’s cover off on generally what’s happening from these disturbances.

The first thing we need to look at is how water moves through the soil, and in many poorly layered soil profiles, how it doesn’t move or gets stuck. 20

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Gravity is straightforward and makes sense: pour a bucket of water on the soil and it generally soaks in (sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly). Gravity is the force that pulls water downward. Meanwhile, there’s a few other things going on that can make water move in all different directions. Left, right, down, up and, the most troublesome, stationary. The first two properties are known as cohesion and adhesion. These two are involved with how the water relates to the particular soil texture and how it moves, or for the purpose of this discussion, how it’s not moving. Water cohesion is what attracts water molecules to one another (think of a raindrop on glass) while adhesion is water’s attraction to other surfaces such as soil particles, organic matter, and your clothes after spilling a drink. Cohesion and adhesion enables water in the soil to defy the laws of gravity, and the behaviour of these two principles is directly related to the soil texture and structure (more on this in a tick). Meanwhile, water is also responsible for the third principle, known as surface tension. This property dictates how water might remain in the shape of a droplet rather than a thin film. When these three principles are put together, it’s collectively known as capillary action. If you’re starting to glaze over, please stay with me here because it will make sense soon.

Droplets and films

Remember when we talked about the three soil-texture classes: clay, silt, sand and their respective surface areas? Particle sizes and the surface area? Remember that the finesttextured soil particles – clay – has the greatest surface area in a given volume of soil? While these cohesive and adhesive forces in the finely textured soil are doing their thing, the third principle, surface tension, is playing a reduced role. Where one microscopic soil particle touches another, the water will spread like a film. Where the soil particles are spaced apart, such as in a sandy soil, the larger pore spaces allow water to lose its grip on the small particles, and therefore the ability to move consistently through the soil. The water behaves more like a droplet. This is why heavier clay soils are much slower to drain than sandy soils. It’s also why clay soils can hold a whole lot more water than sandy soils. Think of sandy soils having droplets of water throughout the profile while clay has films of water. As there’s more surface area in a film, there’s more volume.

Wetting agents

While we’re on this topic of surface tension, let me briefly explain the basic principles behind wetting agents, surfactants, penetrants, and detergents. All of these products essentially do the

Feature

Perched water tables.

same thing. They break the surface tension of water so it behaves like a film rather than a droplet. In the kitchen, detergent enables water to spread thinly over the dirty surface while the solvents in the product help dissolve the pollutant into the water. In a fire, wetting agents or surfactants are mixed into the water so a film is created over the material that’s burning or about to be burned. This film of water helps to starve the fire of oxygen. Pesticides have surfactants pre-mixed or mixed in later. These enable the chemical to spread over the leaf or critter as a film rather than droplets that roll off. Soil-wetting agents work to convert water into a film rather than droplets. A film of water re-wets dry potting mix and soils with high levels of organic matter much better than droplets ever can. If you’re working with sandy soils wetting agents will help water penetrate deeper and coat the large soil particles with a film of moisture rather than droplets of water. Sorry for digressing but this was worth including. 22

A demonstration

Bringing this situation into context: when we’ve created or are experiencing interfaces or layers of different soil textures, such as silt or clay spread over sand, water can behave in weird ways. Drainage will be hindered at the interface layer where the water can’t or won’t migrate into the new layer. This is the same reason why ag drains installed to remove excess sub-surface water often don’t work. In fact, they often make the drainage worse in the soil above the drain. This is also why a layer of gravel in the bottom of a pot or planter worsens drainage rather than improving it. But why? Surface tension. Because we’ve broken the continuing chain of soil particles that allows the water to move cohesively through the soil, we can only rely on gravity to pull the water down into the coarser soil (or aggregate in the case of drains and pots). Gravity alone doesn’t allow the water to ‘fall’ into the voids of the more-porous gravel or sandy soil beneath the finer textured topsoil.

Only when the soil above this porous profile is completely saturated and all of the air spaces in the soil are completely filled with water will the excess water in the soil above be pulled by gravity into the freedraining profile beneath. Once that excess water has ‘fallen’ into the voids of the gravel drain, each soil particle will still remain completely covered by the water that clings to it by surface tension or adhesion. This often means the soil above the free-draining profile will remain saturated until it can be removed from evaporation or absorbed by roots. This permanently wet area is called the capillary fringe. As the spaces between the soil particles in this area are mostly filled with water, gaseous exchange is hindered and the unsavoury stench of toxic anaerobic conditions soon occupies the soil profile. Check out your car-washing sponge for a perfect demonstration of surface tension and capillary fringe at play. Soak it thoroughly and hold it horizontally. Water will drain away then stop. Although the bottom third or quarter of the sponge is still drenched with water, gravity has ceased drawing it out and the other three principles come into play. Turn the sponge so it’s vertical and watch more water spill from the sponge. Imagine the sponge being the soil with the capillary fringe being the bottom layer. When we turn the sponge on its side, the water is still present because it resumes draining thanks to gravity.

These layered soil horizons often occur in areas where the free-draining topsoil has been inverted or buried by finer textured local or imported soils. The greater the difference between the textures of the two soil types the more the upper soil will hold onto the water. So when we install drains with 10mm – 20mm aggregate underground, the textures are so vastly different that the capillary fringe will continue to maintain a perched water table above our highly porous, well-intentioned but useless ag drain. The only way to ensure your ag drain works effectively is to maintain the same type of gravel from the bottom of the drain to the soil surface and definitely avoid using geofabric between the gravel and surrounding soil. Geofabric doesn’t work as a filter. It blocks with silt and only serves to maintain an unhealthy interface between the boggy soil and dry aggregate. How many of us have dug through boggy conditions to cut the geofabric out of the ineffective ag drain? How many of us have observed that once the aggregate is exposed to air above, the drain works properly? By spreading these unrelated layers of soil we’ve created a situation called a perched water table. Providing the capillary fringe is deep enough in relation to the soil texture and not in contact with high levels of organic matter, things mightn’t be too bad. In fact, if we were building a USGA sand-based putting green with no organic matter in the soil horizon, we’d have created a water-efficient sand profile that could hold a reservoir of accessible water deep enough for the turf to Surface tension dictates how water remains in the shape of a droplet rather than a thin film.

24

An example of incompatible layers. Soil is essentially a sponge. The pore spaces in a sponge allow water to move thanks to cohesion. The sponge stays moist thanks to adhesion. Soak it full of water and hold it in the air and approximately half the water drains thanks to gravity. Why doesn’t the lot drain out? Thanks to surface tension, the water gets stuck, or becomes ‘perched’, in the bottom section or ‘interface layer’. The bottom half of the sponge is so saturated roots will die in it.

T

N draw from with little loss to evaporation and little risk of diseases from excess rootzone moisture.

Blend and vary

Most, if not all of the time, we’re not building an engineered putting green. We’re building an ecology that’s supposed to drain well. Okay, we’ve created or discovered this layered-soil problem which has left us with a perched water table. The depth of the water table will determine whether we live with it or fix it. As I mentioned earlier, If the capillary fringe is sufficiently deep enough for the type of soil texture and organic-matter content the garden might be able to grow above this

problem while the root systems establish and begin to exploit the water resource. Given a loamy soil has a capillary-fringe depth of around 200mm and the high levels of organic matter in most landscape soils then I doubt we have sufficient depth in the profile to ignore the water problem we have. So how do we solve these layered horizons? The goal is to eliminate the interfaces of the varying soil textures by blending the layers. If you’re importing soils or pushing material around the site, the trick is to ensure two soils are blended together as much as possible while you’re increasing the depths. Aim to create an interface that looks more

like a jagged edge or stock-market graph. Always avoid straight lines of differing soil types. If the garden is already planted, consider cultivating the surrounding soil deep enough to ensure they’re mixed together. Another option for very deep layers would be to excavate through the layers with a posthole digger or auger throughout the affected gardens, then backfill with the homogenised soil. These holes will create breaks in the interface which will allow water to drain through and roots to penetrate. I hope this chat has helped to explain one of the biggest and most common misunderstandings our industry has with managing our soils.

eaturing a new Yanmar 24-HP (18.5kW) turbo-diesel engine, the SK900 takes some of the features found on Ditch Witch’s larger SK models and puts them into a beast of a mini stand-on skid steer. A narrow footprint optimises power to get the job done without sacrificing the manoeuvrability and versatility that makes the small machine so useful. Matt Clissold from Total Perfection Landscaping was Australia’s first owner of an SK900, taking delivery in March of this year. He’s been extremely happy with the performance of the machine. “I call it my other staff member,” grinned Matt. “It’s the one that’s always willing to work hard!”

Complete service

Matt is the proud owner and working director of Total Perfection Landscapes. Established in 2015, Total Perfection Landscapes services Greater Sydney, Newcastle, and the NSW central coast. He was previously second-in-charge on group one golf courses in Sydney and has been in the industry since he was 15. “Total Perfection Landscapes started as a landscape-maintenance company,” recalled Matt, “though quickly progressed to include landscape construction, and now all areas of landscaping. “We’re a diverse team that can complete a whole landscape package, so the client only needs to deal with us at the end of a new build or landscape makeover.”

User friendly

The Ditch Witch SK900 packs a punch with new high-torque ground-drive motors. a significant upgrade that means this unit punches well above its weight, providing increased tractive effort, and power available to attachments. An easy-flip throttle allows operators to conveniently manage speed for more efficiency. The new Yanmar engine runs at a lower rpm making it a lot quieter. An all-new troubleshooting gauge ensures it’s easy to identify faults and monitor engine parameters. “It gives me great peace of mind knowing it’s there should myself or one of my staff members need it,” stated Matt.

Features

CEA offers a wide range of quick-change attachments for the SK900. During this review Matt was using the machine to level out dirt, but found he needed to move some pallets. The swap from the 4-in-1 bucket to the pallet forks attachment only took about a minute, and Matt was able to make the change in a narrow driveway. The machine handled the tasks with ease, tracking effortlessly around the site, manoeuvring through tight spaces and around the side of the house, and lifting anything that needed to be moved (featuring a tipping load of 1208kg). The SK900 features intuitive controls that are easy to learn and use effectively. This is especially important for Total Perfection Landscaping, as it often has multiple operators utilising the machine.

reen Acres Golf Club recently acquired a 9027F ZTS mini excavator to rebuild all its bunkers after last year’s floods. “The water levels got to six feet high,” Nick explained. The floods hit extremely hard, and the club has had to rebuild a lot of the course. “We’re using the excavator for bunker work,” explained Nick. “We had to rebuild all of them. That’s the main job for the LiuGong at the moment. Then it will move on to drainage work.”

Built to perfect dimensions

“The size is perfect for us and what we do,” Nick continued. “The weight and tracks don’t affect the ground too much.” With an overall length of 4160mm and an overall width of 1550mm, the 9027F boasts a very versatile frame that allows it to go almost anywhere landscapers need it to. The machine’s operating weight is just 2680kg, making it extremely light, and that’s even more impressive as it doesn’t come at much of a compromise. The Yanmar 4TNV98CT engine is

more than powerful enough to get the job done. The lean design also means, for the Green Acres team, transportation around the large course is very easy and efficient. Peter Walker, Regional Manager from Pacific Machinery Group (PMG), said the attributes of the 9027F were a real asset for the job in hand. “For me to sell an excavator to this environment, a golf course, I needed a machine that was light to drive onto greens and which could get inside of bunkers.

The cab of the 9027F is spacious and air-conditioned, with an adjustable seat and easy-to-use controls. It needed a quick hitch which allowed it to do all sorts of work.”

Reliable and supported

Green Acres purchased the 9027F from PMG and Peter had very high praise for the aftersales support from the LiuGong Australia team, recounting a minor issue: “They actually came out with three of their reps and their mechanics and techs, and they made some needed tweaks to the machine in front of the golf-course guys. I love that. That was terrific. And I think it showed the general manager it was a perfect thing to do when there was a problem.” Peter also talked about quick parts delivery for the 9027F, saying, “With this machine, I’ve got parts in Melbourne, I’ve got parts in Sydney, I’m only a phone call away and we’ve got a very extensive parts list.

“We’ve got the top 500 parts purchased and stored in Sydney with LiuGong Australia and with PMG.”

Features

When asked about his favourite features of the 9027F, Peter reeled off, “What I like about the 9027 is its simplicity. That’s what it comes down to. It’s a simple machine. It’s small, but still got some good grunt. The Yanmar three-cylinder diesel does everything just perfectly on this machine, and it has a quick hitch, an advanced hydraulic system, a two-speed travel system and there are multiple attachments available for it to different jobs.”

Hitachi and Ryan Williams Ramping up the action.

T

he ZX65USB-5 mini excavator is the largest machine in Hitachi’s mini range. Hitachi excavators are renowned for durability whilst delivering high levels of productivity with reduced running costs, and the ZX65USB-5’s round, compact body design combines with wide-opening covers, a spacious cab and enhanced visibility to make the operator’s workspace safe, comfortable and efficient. And it’s not only experienced, professional operators who appreciate the benefits of Hitachi design and build quality.

R-Willy

At 28, Ryan Williams – ‘R-Willy’ to his legions of Instagram and Youtube followers -already has a fairly spectacular career to look back on. When it comes to sport, Ryan is all about the action. “I’m a professional BMX rider,” grinned the Sunshine Coaster. “I’ve been doing it

since I was 12. I’ve been touring with Nitro Circus for 11 years and won five X Games medals.” As we tried to digest what 11 years of BMX flips and insane jumps must be like, we were driven to wonder what need an action-sport champion would have for an excavator. “I have 40 acres of land,” explained Ryan, “and it has a lot of tracks. “It used to be a mango farm, and the Hitachi is great for clearing tracks, creating firebreaks, making sure the paths are clear…I didn’t have an excavator before, and the tracks would get overgrown to the point where we couldn’t mow them.”

Lift and carry

Ryan’s other big use for his ZX65USB-5 is hefting around the giant ramps he uses for his BMX and scooter jumps. “My ramps weigh over a ton, the Hitachi turns a 15-man job into a one- or two-man

job,” he said. “There’s a lot more I can do with the Hitachi, and that’s why I bought the six-tonne machine. I’m using a 20-foot ramp now and I know I’m only going bigger, so I bought a machine which could handle the growth. “But it’s mostly handling the ramps and working around the property.”

Word of mouth

With very little experience on earthmoving machinery of any kind, we were curious about what led Ryan to choose Hitachi. “I’d heard they’re a really reliable machine, and my dad’s a pro excavator operator and he vouched for the Hitachi brand,” said Ryan. “I have a friend who’s also a BMX rider and who drives excavators, and he vouched for them as well. “I went and visited the Hitachi branch in Brisbane and met Antony Moore, Sales Representative for Hitachi. He showed me

the machines – they’re beautiful-looking machines – and I went with them.” How difficult is it for a novice to handle a ZX65USB-5? “I have no excavator background,” outlined Ryan, “but my dad operates excavators for a living, so he taught me what I need to know to use the Hitachi. As long as you’re a in a spot where you can’t really break stuff, where there’s open space, you can pick it up pretty quick. “I’ve got the Steelwrist tiltrotator on it as well, and I’m learning from scratch. I’ve only done about 50 hours in it so far and there’s a lot more to learn, but I’m pretty stoked on it.”

Easy to live with

Ryan uses the ZX65USB-5 to move around his giant ramps and maintain his 40-acre property.

Although Ryan’s still fairly new to the Hitachi, he understands the need for maintenance, and so far he considers it a real plus for the ZX65USB-5. Right now it gets fired up and put to work three or four times a week. “The daily maintenance is really easy,” he said. “It’s one of the things I loved about it. “When Antony opened everything up it was really simple for him to explain it to me. He only had to show me once and I pretty much know how to maintain the machine now.” When it comes to tackling the tough stuff, the Hitachi and the action-sports athlete are a great match. www.landscapecontractor.com.au

To increase productivity, JCB’s auto kickdown motors automatically adapt to changes in terrain, increasing productivity and reducing operator fatigue. Dipper tear-out forces of up to 29.0kN; combined with fast cycle times, enable unrivalled productivity, and by perfectly matching the boom and dipper, JCB has created optimal dig-end geometry, ideal for working and loading in confined areas with ease.

Zero Tail Swing

The Zero Tail Swing configuration offers concern-free manoeuvrability – especially in confined spaces – because the rear overhang outside the tracks is eliminated. Reduced, Zero or Conventional Tail Swing configurations are available.

The 55Z is both durable and confidence-inspiring.

Hydraulic innovation

A premium, closed-centre hydraulic system provides improved flow sharing for smooth, precise and balanced operation during multifunctioning. The programmable twin auxiliary lines provide high and optional low hydraulic flows to operate an array of attachments, increasing the machine’s versatility. Both auxiliary lines are electrically proportionally controlled and fully adjustable for optimum attachment control. The optional four-way dozer can be angled

right and left which, combined with the dozer float function, makes levelling and backfilling work incredibly easy, even on inclines and uneven terrain.

Versatility attached

JCB now offers a range eco buckets, designed with fuel saving in mind, and JCB attachments provide ultimate performance, full JCB warranty compliance and optimum fit and operation. The fully CE-marked, factory-fitted hydraulic quickhitch is an option to add for changing attachments quicker.

Safely does it.

Large track-frame width and a low centre of gravity helps to ensure stability is maximised, and the standard boom and optional worklight guards offer greater protection for vulnerable components in hazardous applications. Optional LED lights accommodate the ‘follow-me-home’ function. When selected, the lights will remain on for three minutes, even when the machine is switched off, illuminating the area and allowing the operator to leave the site safely. The 55Z offers greater visibility than JCB’s outgoing models, thanks in part to a 70/30 front screen split: for easy, safe trench digging and manoeuvring. www.landscapecontractor.com.au

Kobelco and JP Gardens and Excavations Moving to Tasmania and choosing Kobelco excavators have been positive steps for this landscaping business.

J

P Gardens and Excavations is a familyowned and operated landscaping and excavation company determined to do landscaping the old way – ‘do it once and do it right’ – with a modern touch. The company strives to create something unique that leaves customers feeling amazing in their own way and fits all their lifestyle and outdoor-living requirements. In the 10 years JP Gardens and Excavations staff has been in landscaping, it’s tried a lot of machinery. “We’ve been on CAT, Volvo, Hitachi, Kubota, Takahuchi…all these other brands,” said Jesse Penny, who, at 27, is at the head of a very fast-growing outfit and is totally sold on Kobelco machinery. “I’d never been on a Kobelco before,” he said, gazing thoughtfully down the years. “We originally started out in Canberra and moved to Tassie as one of the family members was looking for a bit of a change. We loved it and haven’t moved back. “We hired our first Kobelco from Page Hire down here at Spreyton, and they looked after us awesomely. Every business needs to grow, and since we bought our Kobelco machines we haven’t looked back. We’ve had nothing but reliability.” The SK35SR features a unique blade design which prevents earth from falling behind the blade.

46

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

The future’s looking good for JP Gardens and Excavations, with Jesse’s Kobelco fleet continuing to grow.

The machines

Jesse has recently taken delivery of a new Kobelco SK35SR-6 with cabin to run alongside the company’s SK17SR. The Kobelco SK17SR is a 1.7-tonne machine that’s ideal for work in tight spaces, like residential areas and industrial premises, and combines a compact design with a wide digging reach for efficient performance, excellent manoeuvrability, and tough durability to ensure an extended working life. Jesse’s latest purchase, the SK35SR, is a 3.5-tonne machine with outstanding digging performance thanks to a multiple pump flow-sharing system providing pump flow of 38.4L/min and pressure of 23.0 MPa (relief valve setting). An Energy Conservation Mode – equipped with ‘S’

mode – lowers fuel consumption by up to 25% compared to previous models. The SK35SR includes Kobelco’s exclusive iNDr cooling system which reduces heat and dust penetration with a short tail swing for when space is limited. The SK35SR also has standard factoryfitted quick-hitch piping, a colour LCD monitor and a unique blade design which prevents earth from falling behind the blade. Maintenance on this machine is made easy with all the start-up checks able to be performed at ground level, with an easy-to-understand layout and cover design that simplifies access and saves time.

More to come

and Excavations, with Jesse’s Kobelco fleet continuing to grow. What is it he likes so much about Kobelco excavators? “One thing was obviously dealing with Dave and Matt from DLM Machinery at St Leonards, the Kobelco dealer here in Tassie,” explained Jesse. “They’ve been bloody awesome from the start.” “In the way of Kobelco being different from other brands, overall it’s a comfy machine. Every digger’s got its own points and plusses, but the Kobelcos are smooth machines with good power, and they’re just comfortable all ’round, and you can virtually do anything from civil projects down to your small residentials.” Jesse told us. The next purchase is already under way. “I shook Dave’s hand and said we’d definitely be back to buy another one,” Jesse told us, “and we did. Hopefully we’ll be doing the same again in maybe a year or so’s time.” An eight-tonner is likely to be next on the JP Gardens and Excavations shopping list, and there’s nothing surer than it’ll be a Kobelco. www.landscapecontractor.com.au

New year, new grapple saw! Why not kick off 2023 with a new way of working smarter – a grapple saw!

GRAPPLES High performance lift & load attachments

I

f you’re lopping and chopping trees, a customised grapple saw is a safer, more efficient way to work. It makes your excavator more versatile and it saves on manpower – a welcome innovation in these times when good workers are hard to find.

Swedish and Italian quality – fully customised

An Intermercato grapple saw combines the Intermercato Swedish grapple of your choice with a worm-drive rotator and an Italian hydraulic saw. All components are supplied individually, and Intermercato Australia will mount and install in-house. That means your kit is customised to create exactly the tool you need to blitz your workload this year.

Rigid mount or pendulum mount

The rigid-mount design is Intermercato’s preferred setup with a worm-drive rotator. This allows you to reach up, grab a limb and operate the saw. Once the limb is cut it will not fall and will be held in the same position. You can safely bring the limb to the ground. Intermercato Australia also has the capability to design and create a pendulum mount.

Let’s get technical

Most excavators only have two sets of auxiliaries, so a 12V or 24V solenoid may be required to share one of the hydraulic lines. There are two options. You can share the saw and grab on the same line and leave the rotator on its own line, or you can couple the grapple and rotator on one line and have the saw on the other. Or you may want to have another feed line installed to operate the saw. To power the solenoid, you will need o install a momentary switch in the cab.

Call now to find out how the right grapple can maximise your efficiency on the job. 1300 88 21 61

grapples.com.au Your kit is customised to create exactly the tool you need to blitz your workload this year.

Setup requirements

The main setup requirement for the saw is enough hydraulic flow, because your machine must have the correct amount of flow to power the saw’s requirements. The next most important criterion is the return-to-tank line needs to be at least ¾” or 1” for the bigger saws. This drain line must go straight to the tank with no restrictions apart from a filter. A flat-face coupler has too much resistance, so a screwed connection is preferred. There are four hydraulic saw options. The team at Intermercato grapples can advise you on the setup that best suits your needs.

he Land Pride Powered Rake brings a variety of capabilities, including the ability to grade, level, shape, cultivate, renovate and pulverise across a wide range of surfaces. Kubota Australia product manager, John Moloney, said the Land Pride Powered Rake is the ultimate tool for landscaping contractors looking for a versatile surface preparation and maintenance implement. “The 60-inch or 72-inch working widths are well suited for smaller landscaping and turf renovation jobs, with a horsepower requirement of 25hp-60hp,” said Moloney. “The 90-inch model is perfect for larger commercial jobs and requires 35hp-75hp. “The attachment is capable of raking or windrowing soil, rocks and construction-site debris, while another common application is renovating gravel roadways and tracks. It’s an incredibly versatile implement. “The Powered Rake is built to last with a range of features, including the wide-gauge wheels adjusting vertically to set working depth with tall and wide tyres to keep turning fluffy soil. The sealant prevents against punctures and the cast-iron chainguard housing protects the chain in harsh and hostile conditions. “The carbide-tipped studs are the same used in the mining industry, so they are very tough with a long life and can be replaced one at a time where needed.”

50

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

Additional standout features include QuickHitch compatibility, allowing quick connection and disconnection from the implement when a Land Pride Quick Hitch is added. “The PR16 Series Powered Rake also has side plates with storage, allowing you to hold dirt with the rake for filling in low spots, and the material control deflector determines what size of material to let pass through the roller and what size to move out. These features make the PR16 Series Powered Rake one of the most versatile landscaping tools available.

Ideal for renovating gravel roadways. and tracks.

“The double roller chain takes the fluctuation loads from the roller in varying ground conditions and, due to the drive chain being enclosed in an oil bath with a drain plug, the sprockets are kept lubricated with minimum abrasion.” Kubota Australia is providing a five-year gearbox warranty on the Land Pride Powered Rake. Deliveries of the Land Pride PR16 Series Powered Rake range are available through your local Kubota dealer.

Innovative products

Hybridization: propulsion options Hybridization’s benefits are most often linked to productivity and fuel consumption. And both lead to greener, more sustainable business outcomes.

H

ybridization is used to drive vehicle efficiency two ways. The first is about utilising the engine’s power to generate electrical energy to more effectively power various loads. The second is more traditional and is about off-loading some of the engine’s energy demands with a second power source, a battery, and using that source to run other functions traditionally tied to the engine.

With over a million operating hours in the field, the 944K offered an engineering and component foundation for future development that was tapped into with Deere’s newest E-Drive offering.

Increased efficiency

Will Cross, supervisor for electrification architecture and systems engineering, said many Construction & Forestry use cases are transient in nature, making those product lines ideal for hybridization. “Our larger equipment will continue to have internal combustion engines for the foreseeable future due to energy density, so the question is: ‘How will we reduce carbon emissions for those systems?’” Cross said. “Reducing the carbon content of the fuel itself is one important path, but we can also make our power generation and vehicle systems utilise that fuel more efficiently. We can start by electrifying vehicle systems to utilise engine power more effectively. Mechanically decoupling loads from the engine, as well as the inherent efficiency of electric drives, all contribute to improved vehicle efficiency. “This will continue to be fundamental to many of our products across the Deere portfolio.” C&F’s shining exaample in this conversation is its 944K loader, known for its fuel efficiency and productivity. With over a million operating hours in the field, the 944K offered an engineering and component foundation for future development that was tapped into with Deere’s newest E-Drive offering, the 850 Dozer¹.

Deere 850 Dozer

The dozer, showcased at the CONEXPO/ CON-AGG 2023, offers different modes — giving customers the choice of optimising productivity or fuel economy depending on the job. “The 850 is used in many earthmoving applications, including 54

site development and roadbuilding,” said Kat Roberts, product manager for dozers and crawler loaders. “Deere is still in the process of validation and testing, but we are seeing improvements in both fuel efficiency and productivity over traditional machines.”

Minimising idle time

Deere can further improve efficiency and productivity by adding a secondary energy source, a battery, to help minimise machine idle time. Led by electrification advancements and hybridization opportunities, John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) is developing technologies to turn off the engine when minimal power is needed, while still providing power to loads such as cab heating and air conditioning. This helps deliver the benefits of less fuel burned, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, retained machine value,

lower operating costs due to fuel and oil consumption, and reduced hour accumulation. This also contributes to reduced regular maintenance and repair costs overall.

The road ahead

Deere believes hybrid equipment will not only provide near-term carbon and productivity benefits, but develop Deere’s vehicle architectures to reduce alternative fuel usage and costs when they arrive. Deere will continue to aim to engineer systems that most effectively utilize engine power to provide operating cost and productivity benefits to customers. ¹ Deere, The Dirt Winter 2021, www.deere.com/assets/pdfs/common/ industries/construction/publications/the-dirtwinter2021-dmag259c us.pdf (2022).

Cub Cadet PRO Z 560 S A quality, robust machine WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH

C

ub Cadet has become increasingly popular in Australia in recent years. The brand is no newcomer to the mower game with its first machines made in Kentucky in 1960. After 63 years of manufacturing, constant research and development, the results we see today in this new PRO Z 560 S is a machine with capabilities far beyond its 1960’s ancestors.

Built to last

At first glance the PRO Z 560 S looks a little different to most zero-turns as it has a steering wheel rather than lap-bar controls. This development by Cub Cadet, known as ‘Synchro Steer’, uses the zero-turn capability of the rear wheels integrated with the front-wheel steering. The front wheels are steer wheels also, not castor type as on conventional zero-turns, and this gives much more stability on slopes, with the machine rated for use on up to 20-degree inclines. Also, with all four wheels turning, there is considerably less damage to the turf surface when making tight turns. That results in a neater finish, especially on sloping terrain. 60

The PRO Z 560 S is a commercial machine and built to stand contractor punishment. The 60-inch fabricated deck and top and bottom reinforcements are manufactured from 7-guage steel – hence the ‘Triple 7’ name of the deck – and adding to the deck toughness are leading-edge and side reinforcements of ¼” and 5/16”. Ergos and drive

Sitting in the operators’ seat is a comfortable experience even on rough terrain, with a weight-adjustable suspension seat, adjustable armrests, forward/back slide adjustments and an angle-back adjustment. Combined with a simple-tooperate adjustable steering column and rubber-bush-dampened footrest platform it is easy for any operator to get comfortable and stay comfortable for a long day.

The power plant on the PRO Z 560 S is the impressive Kawasaki FX921V, a 999cc engine producing 31hp and giving ample power for the 60” cut size and 12cc Parker transmissions that drive the machine. This engine is proven for this type of application and known for its reliability, power and longevity. There is ample room around the engine for all maintenance task, and a handy oil drain hose enables fast and clean oil changes. Huge dual fuel tanks carry 56 litres, ensuring long intervals between refuelling.

A very impressive commercial warranty applies to the PRO Z 560 S: three years on the unit and the engine and five years on the deck shell.

Operation

I like the simple, drop-in pin-height adjustment system. It’s easy to see desired heights and make changes, even while on the move. A travel-lock position to hold the deck in the highest position is also fitted and simple to operate. Another great feature is the quickrelease hydro lever located to the left of the operators’ seat. It allows the operator to release the hydro drives if the machine needs to be pushed for any reason. It’s much better than most other machines where the hydro release is buried in the

Huge dual fuel tanks carry 56 litres, ensuring long intervals between refuelling. depths of the mower and awkward to use. Operating the machine was a pleasure. It’s reasonably fast with a top speed of 16.5kph and once used to the steeringwheel operation it’s very manoeuvrable at speed, even around obstacles. The Triple 7 deck cut and expelled grass with force, leaving a neat even finish with only one pass on very long Buffalo and Kikuyu grass. I also operated on some very bumpy and uneven terrain where the grass wasn’t long, but I was able to operate at full speed and still be comfortable in the operator’s seat.

Summing up

A very impressive commercial warranty applies to the PRO Z 560 S: three years on the unit and the engine and five years on the deck shell. This would give great peace of mind for commercial operators. The ability to have a universal machine that is great on level and undulating ground, as well as steep slopes to 20 degrees, is also a a very attractive proposition for contractors as it enables them to have one machine for two jobs, rather than a specific slope mower and another for general use. www.landscapecontractor.com.au

Mowing equipment

Going electric Don’t be afraid to make a big improvement to your business.

C

hange is always difficult. Walking away from something you’ve known for pretty much your whole life can move from difficult into the realms of challenging and even confronting. That’s how it feels to most experienced landscapers considering making the change from internal combustion motors to electric. The idea of hearing protection, carrying fuel, filters, spare plugs and tools – and hoping the thing will start after the tank was run dry at full revs – are all second nature to a lot of very experienced professionals. And while there are undoubted environmental benefits in going electric, surely a Euro-5 compliant small-bore fourstroke can’t be doing much damage, can it? There’s a lot more to joining the fastgrowing throng of electric converts than looking after the environment. There’s very real short-term rewards for owners and operators as well.

Safety

In all the justifiable excitement at being able to work with zero emissions, the safety advantages of electric OEP, especially zeroturn mowers which are generally intended to cover large areas and run for extended periods are considerable. Probably the most obvious is low noise levels. EcoTeq’s Mean Green zero-turn mowers are a great example, with the entire range 66

LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR

running at less than 80dB. That means: * The risk of hearing loss for the operator is minimised, as is disturbance in noisesensitive environments – like working near schools, elderly care centres and nearby neighbours * There’s no need for hearing protection to meet WHS legislation requirements, although EcoTeq does still recommend hearing protection as a safety measure. That’s just sensible for any prolonged exposure to low-level noise, and * There’s no noise produced by the engine. The only sound is the soothing swish of blades cutting grass (and a job being done).

Low-voltage battery systems

Another great characteristic of a modern, purpose-built zero turn like those in EcoTeq’s Mean Green range is the use of high-tech battery technology. Risks associated with maintaining electric equipment are vastly reduced thanks to low-voltage systems, and that helps to contribute to the simplicity of the whole unit. There’s no specialist training or qualifications required for techs working a Mean Green zero turn (as is currently required to service electric cars, for example).

No oil spills

Being designed and built from the groundup as an electric zero-turn mower means

there are no hydraulics, no fossil fuel and no oil required to run and maintain Mean Green mowers. There’s no patches on the shed floor or puddles in the trailer, and the risk of pedestrians slipping on sidewalk fluid spills is eliminated. There’s also no risk of petrochemicals seeping into vulnerable waterways or customers gardens.

No fumes

Even the very newest internal combustion engine, compliant with the most rigorous environmental standards, will still have exhaust gasses. There’s no other possible way for an engine burning fossil fuels to work. But there are no fumes or exhaust gasses produced by a Mean Green zero turn, no matter how hard it works, or for how long. That’s good for the world we live in, for sure, but it’s also good news for the operator. No fumes means the risk of respiratory irritation from extended exposure is eliminated, comfort is maximised, and even the most environmentally conscious passerby will smile approvingly and offer a greeting. And because there’s very little sound from a Mean Green zero turn, the operator can offer a cheery reply and continue on completing another job with a minimum of interruptions. Going electric is a big step, for sure, but it’s a step into a cleaner, more comfortable and far more efficient future.

EQUIPMENT & PRODUCT REVIEWS

Mowing equipment Good news for the operator One of the key features driving TW Horticultural Services’ interest in EcoTeq’s electric zero-turn mowers was low vibration. An operator on the team suffers referred elbow pain. “Knowing about the constant impact from vibrations, it was one of the

things I was interested in checking when I test drove the Rival,” said coowner, Brenton Waite. “The reduction in pain management of his elbow since using the Rival has been quite noticeable. We’re all really impressed with the machine.”

The safety advantages of electric OEP, especially zero-turn mowers, are considerable.

EQUIPMENT & PRODUCT REVIEWS

Mowing equipment EGO is about to take ultraperformance to the next level with the new Z6 107cm E-STEER™ Stamped Deck and 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck models.

EGO’s ‘Sports Mowed’ Z6 riding mower just outclassed itself. I

t was already the world’s leading battery powered riding mower, outperforming petrol without the noise, fuss or fumes. Now, EGO is about to take ultra-performance to the next level with the new Z6 107cm E-STEER™ Stamped Deck and 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck models. If you need to step up your lawn-care game, look no further.

Time to switch gears

It’s not just a new way to mow. It’s a new way to drive. The new 107cm Z6 with E-STEER™ puts revolutionary features in the palm of your hands. Now you’ll have the added precision of a steering wheel which lets you handle any turf with ease. And most The added precision of a steering wheel with a backlit LED screen which allows control of a whole host of functions at the push of a button.

importantly, it’s a whole lot of fun. On the front you’ll find a backlit LED screen which allows control of a whole host of functions at the push of a button, including driving and blade speeds. You’ll also find the power-status indicator up top too, so you won’t have to stop what you’re doing to check your Z6’s battery life. On the back, there’s two rear paddles. It’s the kind of detail that really puts the sports in ‘Sports Mowed’, allowing you to switch into reverse with ease. And if it’s a lazy Sunday, there’s a cruise-control mode too. Just turn it on and let your Z6 handle the rest. The Z6 E-STEER™ features four independent brushless motors powered

by four 12.0Ah 56V ARC Lithium™ batteries. That’s the equivalent of a 22-horsepower engine and enough juice to comfortably cut up to two acres of lawn. Better yet, it can hold up to six batteries for an extra boost. EGO calls it Peak Power™ performance.

Sometimes bigger is better

Some backyards demand a bit more than others. That’s why EGO is also introducing the 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck model. With welded steel as opposed to a pressed plate, it’s perfect for tackling the kind of yard other ride-on mowers just can’t seem to get around. Stepping up from the standard four brushless motors, the 132cm Lap Bar Fabricated Deck Z6 has five, which puts it up against a 25-horsepower engine. It really packs a punch. And with a 30% bigger cutting blade, it’ll make quick work of grass, shrubs, bark and just about anything else you throw at it.

Welcome to the family

It goes without saying that no two backyards are the same. That’s why all Z6 models feature a complete zero-turn radius with 10 cutting-height positions, ranging from 25mm to 100mm. All that grass can either be mulched or side discharged, and if you need a cleaner finish, there’s a bagging kit sold separately too. No need to stop. Just ride on. Of course, each Z6 has been designed to cover a fair amount of ground, and you’ll have three driving modes at your discretion. The control and standard functions let you manage your power output to suit the job 68

Mowing equipment at hand. And the sports mode? We’ll let you figure that one out for yourself. You won’t be waiting to re-charge all day either. The Z6’s 1600W charger is the industry’s fastest, topping up four 10.0Ah batteries in two hours and four 12.0Ah batteries in under three. And when you’re running low on charge, the Z6 will direct you to the nearest battery bay – which will probably be in your garage. Clever, isn’t it? On that topic, every Z6 has world-first compatible rider technology, which means it uses the same batteries as every other EGO tool. So, when you’re done with the lawn, pop open the battery bay and power up your EGO Blower, Chainsaw or Line Trimmer, then get stuck into the rest. There’s a few extra bells and whistles too. Like adjustable seat suspension for total comfort, front, side and rear LED lights, charging port, cupholders and IPX4 weather-resistant construction. Rain, hail or shine, there’s not much that can get in the way of a Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower.

Spoilt for choice

Out of the box, you’ll have your Z6 model of choice, mulching plug, four 12.0Ah batteries for new models or four 10.0Ah batteries for the standard, and a wall-mounted charger.

Peak Power+™ Technology combines the power of up to six EGO 56V ARC Lithium™ batteries to deliver the power and performance of a petrol mower.

There’s a domestic five-year product and three-year battery/charger warranty, too. We’ve got you covered. It’s about time you leave petrol in the dust where it belongs. Order your new Z6 today

and jump on the world’s most awarded cordless battery platform. You’ll never look back. Find out more at egopowerplus.com.au.

and guidance backed up with their years of working in the industry. Kerry, owner of the brickyard, shared that since starting the business he has seen an enormous amount of change in the styles and types of products people favour. More recently, Kerry has seen products like slipproof porcelain pavers and Crazy Natural stone paving become most popular. Just two years ago it was a lot of artificial grass in demand for people who wanted a low-maintenance yard, or for use in areas where natural turf simply wouldn’t grow. Kerry also emphasised how the passion of Melbourne residents for their homes and outdoor spaces has remained strong. Fulton Brickyard is excited to continue serving local customers, working with tradespeople, and supporting the community for years to come.

ombining their extensive knowledge and experience, Karen and Matt Goodman identified a need for a more targeted approach towards the retainingwall and garden-edging market and made the decision to launch KayCee Industries to service those needs. Partner business Dandenong Steel predominately deals with structural steel, merchant bar and sheet metal, cutting to whatever size is requested, while KayCee Industries deals with all the retaining-wall and garden-edging material. The result is an extensive range of products for an ever-growing landscaping market. Reliable, customer-focussed service, competitive pricing and a can-do attitude are central to Kaycee Industries’ thinking. Does the company deliver? We decided to ask someone who’d know.

pool with a pina colada. “We’ll build outdoor rooms, pools, decks, pergolas, paving, retaining walls…anything exterior of the house.” Coolabah’s relationship with Kaycee Industries began five or six years ago when it built a pool for Kaycee’s owners, Karen and Matt. It was clear to Lewis that Kaycee’s business model was a good one which would work to his benefit. “Karen at Kaycee just makes purchasing all landscape materials easy,” related Lewis. “Rather than going to one place for sleepers, then a steel company for H channels, then going somewhere else for concrete posts for a deck and whatever, Kaycee Industries has it all there. The Coolabah guys all have Kaycee’s number and whenever they need anything, they’ll just call and Karen will organise it.”

Service

“Just call it ‘Coolabah’”, said a smiling Lewis Moran, co-owner of Coolabah Building and Landscape Construction in Victoria, and a very happy customer of Kaycee Industries. Having started as an apprentice 15 years ago, Lewis worked his way up the ladder and eventually bought into the business with founder, Dave Jarman. Lewis is visibly very happy with the way things are going for Coolabah. “We’re really custom solutions for all outdoor spaces,” he explained over the phone, denying he was floating around in a 84

Convenience and efficiency are important to any business, but Kaycee adds a personal touch that makes the service a big step above some of its bigger rivals. “I suppose it’s because we’re dealing with the owner,” said Lewis. “It’s like anything: people work a lot harder in their own business, and most of the time it’s Karen who answers the phone. When I ask, ‘Hey, I know I’ve left my order a bit late, but can we get it for tomorrow?’ Karen will usually say, ‘I think I can move something around and I can get that to you by 7.30. Does that work?’

“That’s so much better than big companies who say, ‘No. There’s two jobs booked ahead of you and you have to wait your turn.’ “Karen knows whether the other jobs she’s servicing are urgent or not. She doesn’t just follow a booking sheet. The service at Kaycee is great.”

Efficient

There it is. For landscaping businesses in the Dandenong and Melbourne regions, Kaycee Industries can supply the materials needed for most jobs and have ready for collection at one location. That has to be a huge time saver and a big efficiency boost on any day. Give Kaycee a call on (03) 8899 7357 or, to find out more about the comp any, log on to kayceeindustries.com.au.

Professional indemnity insurance Essential facts.

P

rofessional indemnity insurance can provide cover for businesses and individuals who deliver professional services from the legal costs and claims for damages from an act, omission or breach of duty that occurs as a result of their actions. This insurance may provide cover should: * An architect gets sued for creating a flawed house design after the owners had to pay to fix a flawed extension. * A marketing agency print a client’s brochure with incorrect contact details, resulting in legal action against the agency. It’s important to understand how this type of cover works because many people don’t think it applies to them. But it can provide an important line of defence in many different circumstances.

1. Cover is available in many different industries

Don’t assume you can only take out professional indemnity insurance if you are a member of one of the traditional ‘professions’. You don’t have to be a doctor or a lawyer to take out this type of cover. Anyone who is in a role in which they provide advice should consider whether professional indemnity insurance could provide protection from litigation. A lot of people like plumbers, treeloppers and builders give advice, but don’t buy professional indemnity insurance. But they may be exposed if a customer follows their advice to their detriment.

2. Professional indemnity insurance only provides cover when the policy is current

Professional indemnity insurance only covers policyholders while a policy is live. If you take out a policy, then let it lapse, you won’t be covered for claims that concern events that happened when the policy was active. This means professionals should consider whether they need to maintain professional indemnity cover even when they retire. In some professions, for instance accounting, there is a requirement to maintain cover even when you retire or leave the profession.

3. Understand any exclusions

Professional indemnity insurance is a complex area, and many insurers won’t cover certain risks in policies. For instance, most insurers won’t cover builders and other entities in the construction sector for any damages that relate to building cladding. It’s essential to read the fine print in policies and develop a real understanding about which professional risks are covered and which are not.

A genuine women’s fit B

lundstone continues to lead the way in safety footwear with its RotoFlex® range. This world-leading biomechanical design is a result of years of research into the needs of workers in trades, building and construction industries. The range includes two styles designed specifically to provide a genuine women’s fit – the wheat #8860 and stone #8863.

Challenge accepted

Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT) reports females represent 3% of the trade workforce. EWIT is one of many organisations working to support women to thrive in these industries and to encourage growth in representation. Furthermore, the New South Wales Department of Education reports in its Women in Trades Strategy for 2021 to 2024 women face several challenges when entering a trade. These barriers 88

include cultural attitudes and perceptions about what roles are ‘suitable’ for women. The team at Blundstone is constantly researching, developing and designing to ensure finding appropriate women’s specific safety footwear is not one of those challenges.

RotoFlex

The #8860 and #8863 from the RotoFlex range increases Blundstone’s women’s specific offering to seven styles — including boots suitable for a range of heavy and light industries. “Blundstone is proud to be offering two more styles to increase our women’s offering in the safety market,” said Kylie White, Australian Sales Manager. “The #8860 and #8863 are specially designed to conform to a woman’s foot, providing all the latest protection and comfort features found

across our extensive unisex work and safety range.” The RotoFlex #8860 and #8863 styles are an Australian first in providing composite safety in heavy-industrial women’s safety footwear. Along with the Fortalite® compression-resistant composite toe cap, there are three key technical features that work together to deliver RotoFlex’s premium comfort and safety: the GripTek® Heavy Duty TPU outsole, AirCell footbed, and SoftCell® overarching comfort system. Supporting the comfort technology, is Infinergy® E-TPU, a super-elastic energy foam from BASF that works to reduce impact and fatigue. Componentry aside, the key technical features that differentiate the women’s specific RotoFlex styles are the last the boots are moulded on and the AirCell footbed that has been shaped and constructed with a softer PU to provide optimal support for a woman’s build.

Women’s specific design

Research indicates women’s feet aren’t in fact smaller versions of men’s, but rather, a different shape entirely with distinct functional contrasts, and thus, the need to offer women’s specific support. Blundstone’s design team has considered several variables for its women’s specific styles—arch heights, range of motion and everything in between to ensure a better performing safety boot fit for hardworking women. Blundstone believes women should be entitled to all the same benefits afforded to men in the construction and trade industries. In releasing the two RotoFlex women’s specific styles the brand demonstrates its commitment to the ever-growing female workforce. The women’s specific RotoFlex are available at participating retailers now. Put Blundstone’s innovation to work.

Nurseries. The association is keen to speak with any additional suppliers who are interested in sponsorship opportunities for the prestigious night. Glazed Co. has been a TLA member since 2021. Director Daniel Chamoun says he believes being a member associates the company with like-minded business owners who value quality in product and customer service. “We are proud to be the Platinum sponsor of the Landscape Excellence Awards this year as it gives us the opportunity to meet many of the members in a relaxed setting,” said Chamoun. “We value this opportunity to learn about the issues facing landscaping businesses and how they are addressing them. As a supplier, it also allows us to listen to landscapers and see if there’s anything we can implement in our own business that will help streamline processes for our clients.”

Categories

The award categories are formulated and adjusted each year to reflect the feedback the TLA Team receives from members, judges, members of The Board and past entries. This year’s categories include: •  Apprentice of the Year •  Residential Construction •  Residential Design •  Commercial and Civil Construction •  Residential Maintenance •  Commercial Maintenance •  Supplier of the Year across multiple categories. 2022’s Supplier of the Year, Artisan Interiors. 96
