The power of a strong team always amazes me.
Putting together a magazine like LCM means quite a few people have to coordinate a lot of work, and my desk is the junction point. People like John Gabriele, Marc Worner, Jonathan Garner and Anna Turner get their heads down and put together copy and images, sometimes as a result of site visits and sometimes just drawing on their training and expertise, which then go through the art department to make sure the material looks good and presents well. The production department runs an eye over it looking for grammatical errors and for what we in publishing call ‘style’, and then it’s stored until it’s time for the whole thing to go to the printer as a completed issue.
Printers don’t like receiving things piecemeal, so the much romanticised ‘deadline’ is important.
It’s not a lot different to a landscaping job in that respect. Things need to be done in the correct order and at the right time so the completed job is a good-looking and functional piece of work, which answers the design goals of its creators.
When a team is strong amazing things happen, and it’s not uncommon for me to have very little hands-on involvement in the magazine. The people all know their jobs and they get them done.
In this issue for instance, we have the usual equipment and product reviews: construction equipment, site dumpers, zero-turn mowers and push mowers.
We also went out and test drove the impressive Cub Cadet Ultima ZTS1 ZeroTurn Mower.
That means, without leaving my desk or getting any actual soil under my fingernails, you’re holding another well-written, beautifully presented publishing work which speaks to, and represents, the Australian landscaping industry.
I think that’s fantastic!
John Gabriele had a good look at storage solutions, Marc Worner put together an inciteful and interesting piece on creating and maintaining outdoor lawn spaces,

How to put rates up and keep your clients
Before we go crazy with price hikes, we need to apply some math to the situation. Doing the math will give you the knowledge AND confidence you need to follow through with a price increase.
Step 1 – Recalculate your labour rate
I have spoken many times about how to calculate your labour rate, most recently in the 2021 November-December issue of this magazine. Look it up or drop me a line and I will send you the full explanation. For a quick recap, here’s the formular. Make this calculation for all the staff and combine them to understand what your team costs you per billable hour.
We all know the cost of labour is increasing, so it’s prudent you make this calculation when you hand out pay rises.
Step 2 – Recalculate your overheads
Review all your overhead costs. Some, like electricity, will have jumped considerably over the past few months.
Step 3 – Review material, subbie and plant prices
Ring all your subbies and suppliers and ask them if they intend to increase costs (we’ve just had a financial year rollover so chances are they’ve already increased their prices). This may seem counter intuitive, but you probably price work well in advance of the build, so when the work comes in your costs have already increased and you can kiss your profits goodbye. It’s better to know in advance when prices are going to increase so you can price accordingly.
Congratulations, now that you’ve got a handle on your current cost of labour, materials, subbies and overheads, you’re no longer flying blind. Now you are in a position to make informed decisions about what to charge your clients.
The next step is to decide the margin you wish to place on your costs, which will give you your sell prices to the client.
If you put a 25% mark-up on costs it’ll yield you a 20% gross profit margin. If your overheads are, say, 10% of your turnover, you’ll end up with 10% net profit. That leaves you with $10k profit for every $100k turnover. NOTE: You need to work out your own overhead costs, but 10% is well below average!
Now that you’ve established that prices need to go up in order for you to eat more than beans on toast next year, it’s time to convince the client.
The first step is to believe you are worth the extra money. Doing your homework and working through the numbers above should give you the belief you need. Understand your niche, what you’re good at within your industry will help as well.
Clients may say that Joe Blogs is cheaper. They may be cheaper. They may be cheaper because they’ve got very few overheads, or they do a quicker/crappy job, OR they haven’t run the numbers yet
to realise they’re on their way to going broke fast!
You may lose some clients in the process, but I’d rather go broke relaxing than go broke working my arse off!
Lastly, you need to inform the client. Yes, be apologetic. Blame the economy. Explain that labour and material costs have gone through the roof and you have no choice but to pass them on. Tell them in person, they will accept it more coming from a sincere conversation. And remind them of your point of difference, the reason why they use you in the first place.
If the increases you pass on are fair, you won’t lose too many clients. The trust will be there, and they should know your value and accept the increases. You can compare your rates to the competition, but please be wary of this. It’s a good exercise in understanding your market (and useful if you think you can squeeze a little more profit out), but at the end of the day, your costs are your costs and you need to get paid fairly for the work you do.
Good luck! LC

Landscape storage solutions
Space may be the final frontier but when it comes to storage of landscaping tools and equipment, space is usually never enough. As your enterprise lifts off there will be an ever-increasing need for more storage space to secure tools and equipment, from small hand tools to large machinery and equipment, there is a storage solution available to meet every contractor’s needs.
Vehicle storage solutions
Vehicle storage solutions are something every contractor requires and there are a multitude of solutions to organise your equipment and maximise the available space of all vehicles, particularly the ubiquitous flatbed utility. One of the simplest storage solutions for flatbed vehicles is the Ute storage box or cargo boxes. These are available in a range of profiles and materials from hard case plastics to alloy checker plate models. A simple solution that is fitted to the front of the tray with a sealed lid to protect tools from weather. The beauty of storage boxes is that they can either be temporarily fixed in place to allow for quick removal when the full tray space is required for loose materials such as mulch or aggregates.

Ute service bodies are another great option for storage, particularly for power tools, hand tools and fittings. Service bodies are available for a wide range of vehicle types and can also be custom made to meet specific requirements for Dual Cab, Extra Cab and Single Cab Utes. The beauty of service bodies is the flexibility in configuring the internal storage options with an endless amount of storage options to maximise your storage and efficiency.
Mesh panel partitions, shelving kits and caddy drawers can all be configured to meet individual contractor requirements.
Van storage systems are also available and similar to Utility vehicles systems there are any number of configurations available to maximise storage options. Side racking, bulkhead storage and deck mounted drawers are available from a number of suppliers in modular units so you can add or remove units as storage requirements change.
Done your dash
When you consider the dead space in your vehicle that could be used for storage, don’t overlook the dashboard. There are dashboard organisers available on the market for a range of popular vehicles that can keep the inside of your vehicle organised and those items you need quick access to close at hand. Dashboard organisers come with removable zippered storage pouches. These pouches are ideal for storing documents, plans, permits etc. There are also Velcro loops or small pouches which can be used to secure other items as required such as mobile phones, iPods, torches etc.
Other in-vehicle dead space areas that can be utilised for storage are behind the driver and passenger seats. Simple lightweight canvas seat organisers with pockets can be hung over headrest supports and secured with adjustable straps providing easy storage. Seat organisers are available with pockets to suit larger objects such as books, magazines, maps and iPad as well as smaller pockets to fit items like sunscreens, insect repellent, pens, sunglasses and phones; the options are endless. Seat organisers are designed to be easily attached and removed for quick transfer between vehicles. You can even attach it to the front of the passenger seat for quick, convenient access to a range of items when travelling solo.
Down under
When it comes to maximising storage space on your vehicle don’t just think of the top tray. There are under tray storage options that can safely stash away tie downs, ropes, and other equipment. Standard models and sizes are available to suit most vehicles available in a range of materials. A key feature to consider with under tray storage is to ensure good weather resistant seals on the doors to the units. Fitting neatly between the tray and the chassis, under tray roller drawer units will house all your tools, and equipment is quickly and easily accessible when required. Under tray roller drawer units can also be combined with other storage options, such as under body and above body toolboxes to create your ideal work or storage solution.
Underbody boxes are another option to increase vehicle storage space. Fixed behind the wheel arch they can be added to the driver side, passenger side or both sides of your vehicle.
Out of sight, out of mind
Onsite storage options are available as mobile storage solutions, which can make life easier for contractors. Flat-top tool chests are one of the best options for professionals looking for both tool storage and workspace. The top sections of these units being flat provides a level surface allowing users to easily review landscape plans at construction sites. There are piano box units that open from the front and offer several layers of protection and storage, workbenches with cabinet and drawer storage space that feature a work surface

on the top side. Some jobsite tool storage boxes feature fork pockets at the base for forklift access or have wheels installed for manoeuvrability onsite and can easily be wheeled out of way as required.
The beauty of hiring onsite storage containers is that they provide flexibility depending on the size of the job, allowing you to scale up or down as storage requirements vary. Site storage boxes and containers provide a safe and durable way to store a multitude of tools and equipment, and depending on size some site boxes can be relocated onto the back of a flatbed work vehicle ready for your next landscape installation.
When it comes to storing large equipment and machinery, more permanent storage facilities may be the best option. Space can be costly but replacing machinery and
equipment due to incorrect storage can cost you even more. Shipping containers have many uses, including storage space for equipment and machinery. They are watertight, durable, effective, and reasonably priced. They also come in various shapes and sizes. They can be modified to suit your requirements and can be secured for safety purposes. Purchasing or hiring a large storage unit could be a worthwhile investment. Your machinery and equipment are assets worth investing in and it is important to provide them with the most ideal storage for preservation, safety, and prevention from damage. By storing machinery and equipment properly, they will be fully functional and ready for work, as and when you need them.
Off-site warehouses can store your idle machinery and equipment without using
your working space or the need for building additional structures. The large space in a warehouse enables you to store machinery and equipment of any size, but warehouse space can prove costly and regulations would apply as to what types of equipment can be stored. Another option is a drive-up storage unit – these facilities make accessing and dropping off equipment fast and efficient, but they too are also subject to regulatory guidelines and may not necessarily be the right solution for all your storage requirements.
Equipment storage is a year-round issue and properly maintaining and storing equipment is critical to keeping your operation running, so take the time to consider the right type of storage solution for the size of your business and be sure to maximise the space you already have. LC

Turf tips
In a Japanese book about gardening in 1159 we find the earliest mention of turfing. In the 1200s, grassed areas were commonly used for the grazing of animals and maintained primarily by scythes. In the 15th century, we saw the emergence of turf lawns as private ornamental lawns of the very wealthy and in some public spaces in Europe. Lawns then began to be used as a playground rather than as a source of food.
Cricket was the first sport ever to be played on turf grass and by the year 1500, several sports were being played upon manicured turf lawns. These sports included croquet, tennis, and of course, golf.
Just before the turn of the 19th century, the mechanical lawnmower was invented and became an instant worldwide hit. However, at first only the wealthy could
afford the labour it took to maintain a lawn, but once the push lawnmower was invented in 1870 most property owners with a home wanted a manicured lawn. After some lengthy trial-and-error approaches, the development of turfgrass became a valuable and functional asset for sports, recreational and ornamental uses. By the 1950s turf grasses began to be studied in a scientific manner.
Not only do we now have petrol and electric powered mowers, we have tools for aerating, dethatching, killing weeds and irrigation.
One of the most important things to consider when making a healthy lawn is to understand what the climate is. Will the lawn be in full sun, part sun or shade? How much rain will it get? What are the soil conditions, especially the pH value?
Water shortages caused by local restrictions or droughts can really take a toll on an otherwise healthy lawn and garden. There are many solutions one can use to maintain a beautiful lawn in low water situations. More importantly, creating a drought tolerant lawn in the first place, can simplify lawn care.
So, choose the best type of turf for the climate and its use. Because most of Australia’s population lives in a warm temperate zone, we would choose a so-called warm season grass.
The best time to lay any turf is in autumn because the soil temperature is moderate, the ambient temperature is moderate and root growth still occurs without stress on the plant from heat and higher evaporation rates. The next best time to lay turf is in spring.

Turf is available as seed and in rolls.
Seeds may be suitable to repair areas of less than 2m, but the result may take a few months. Seeds should be broadcast in the spring for best results.
TIP: Mix the grass seeds with a generous volume of Sydney sand for less waste and a more even distribution of seed.
Rolls of turf are generally one square metre and approximately 600mm wide depending on the machine brand cutting
it at the farm. To calculate how much turf you will need to purchase for a job, simply create a sketch, break it up into simple shapes, calculate the areas of each of these shapes and add them all together to find the total area.
TIP: Allow for some miscalculation and wastage.
Soil preparation is a must. Make sure no leafy green organic material of any type is present. In need, carry out a program
of weed eradication for up to one month beforehand. Perhaps the use of a soil underlay is appropriate if there is little topsoil present on the site. Scarifying (scratching) the ground to a depth of approximately 75mm helps break it up to allow for easier penetration of air and water for root development.
TIP: Ensure the surface area has at least a 2% fall to allow for periodic inundation because no plants like their roots sitting in water.
Just before laying the turf some landscapers spread Superphosphate, which is a fertiliser rich in phosphorous that promotes healthy and vigourous root systems in all plants. If you decide to use Superphosphate, ensure the surface is already damp, broadcast it and rake in lightly. It should be spread evenly at the rate of about one handful (50g) per square metre.
Lay the rolls of turf across the slope rather than with the slope otherwise as water runoff occurs, it will create channels and wash away the soil in between the grass rolls and create ruts.
Next, walk the team all over the newly laid turf to ensure all roots are in contact with the ground. Then inundate the entire

TIP: To check on take up of the roots, try lifting several random corners of the turf after two weeks. If there is resistance, you know you are well on the way to a successful project.
If you want a quintessential Buffalo grass born and bred in Australia, it’s difficult to go past Sir Walter Buffalo Turf (DNA Certified). Ticking all the right boxes of high-quality turf, resilient, certified, and genetically pure, buffalo is a fantastic choice for most Australian zones. It has soft leaves that give it a lush look and texture. It tolerates full sun to intense drought conditions – all year long. It is resistant to weeds making it a good choice for commercial projects where presentation is essential.
Zoysia japonica is a warm to tropical grass that is native to Southeast Asia. It is a thick,
hardy grass that chokes out weeds, requires less mowing, watering, and fertilising once it has been established. It can also heal itself quite effectively from pedestrian traffic. It grows almost anywhere: in soil types ranging from sandy to clay profiles and alkaline to acidic situations. Although Zoysia generally thrives in full sun, it also does tolerate shade. The most common problem encountered with Zoysia is thatch, which are layers of decomposed roots. This brown, spongy material can be found just above the soil surface and should be removed with a rake or power de-thatcher in spring. This is a good reason to mow this type of grass short.
Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) is a warm season, coarse, textured grass, which is best suited to sub-tropical regions. It produces both rhizomes and stolons, which means its commonly called a running grass. Like all grasses, it prefers fertile soil and adequate moisture. However, it will withstand drought conditions, dying off and
coming back with watering. It’s the choice for sports fields because of its fast growth habit and toughness.
Couch (Cynondon dactylon) is a warm season fine leaf grass that is suited mostly to tropical, humid climates. It grows prolifically in the Northern Territory on any high traffic areas such as road verges, backyards, school grounds, golf fairways and sporting ovals. Couch can be mown short and has excellent drought and wear tolerance. Because couch produces both rhizomes and stolons it can stabilise soil but may be somewhat invasive if not controlled (like Kikuyu). It’s often used in parks, golf course fairways and feature lawns.
Whatever turf you choose and for whatever purpose it will have, remember that you are creating a living space that will require a yearly budget allocation for its ongoing maintenance. Perhaps you might like to consider offering such a plan to your client for at least the first four seasons of its life. LC

Soil blends PART 3
Thanks to the representatives and volunteers from our industry guilds, research centres and government authorities who have not only helped to develop soils that are fit for purpose “on grade” and “on slab” that we generally use from day to day, they have also provided us with the specifications to create growing medias for specific and unique situations where the demands for our craft comes to the fore.
This is the area that intrigues me most. It’s the nitty gritty end of AS4419. These include the third classification of soils for turf and lawns, then followed by the fourth classification, wetlands and one of my favourites, structural soils. These final classifications tend to focus more on particle sizes of the blends and a little less on organic matter contents.
Let’s first take a look at growing medias for turf and lawns. This classification is separated into three sections. The first being underlay, the second being sports fields and the third, top dressing.
Most of us are quite familiar with using turf underlays. They are generally a blend of sand and soil, commonly known as 70/30,
80/20 and 90/10. The ratios indicate the sand to soil quantity, with some blends containing small amounts of composted organic matter to increase water and nutrient holding capacity. The acceptable percentage range of organic matter content in turf underlay is between 2% and 10%.
Providing there is no organic matter present then these blends are useful for bulk filling at depths greater than 250mm.
An important element of the sand soil blends that can be overlooked or often misunderstood is the importance of inconsistent particle sizes. When soils

I hope you’re enjoying the brief introduction to AS 4419:2018 and it is helping to enrich your understanding of this important facet when creating soil profiles within the built environment.

are blended or tested for suitability, they undergo sieve analysis to measure the various particle sizes. This test involves several layers of sieves with different grades of sieve opening sizes. The finest sized sieve lies on the bottom of the stack with each layered sieve stacked above in order of increasing sieve size or gradient. When a sample of sand or soil is placed on the top sieve and sifted, the individual particles of the material are gradually separated onto the final layer that the particles will not pass through.
You may have heard the term ‘gapgraded’ before. This means the media has a range of particle sizes missing i.e. ‘gaps’ within the gradient sieve spectrum. It’s these types of medias that work best for us as the gaps within the material tend not to make it pack down hard, thus leaving adequate pore spaces for air, water and of
course, roots. Engineers like well graded or uniform soils to pack down hard and build upon whereas we like poorly or ‘gap’ graded soils to grow in. Another issue we face with inappropriate gradings is the potential of the particles within the blended media separating after stockpiling or worse still, after placement or filling. If all of the fine particles within the blend segregate and settle, a layering situation occurs. As I’ve mentioned previously, the drainage and air filled porosity dramas with a layered or separated soil can be very problematic.
The importance of utilising an appropriately gap graded media within turf rootzones brings us to the blends for sports fields. These are sand based and are designed to withstand high foot traffic, provide excellent drainage and air-filled porosity. The load bearing capacities of gap graded sands also greatly reduce the blends from
Note the inconsistent sizes or grades of the stone. The gap graded stone mixed with the soil beside it creates a stable foundation to pave over whilst allowing tree roots to exploit necessary resources for healthy growth.
migrating or being pushed around during high impact activities such as football. Drainage is also improved with the addition of washing the silty soil from the turf prior to laying. Again, the benefits of removing the silty turf farm soil is to eliminate the dramas of layered horizons. We’ll talk about washed turf in a few articles time. For now, let’s focus on these blends and in particular, the sports fields media.
Many years ago, the United States Golf Association developed an optimal, gap graded sand blend for putting greens, fairways and top dressing. The blend was designed for financial and turf health reasons. The loss of revenue golf courses experience from wet weather closures can be astronomical. By creating a growing media that has a high infiltration rate of somewhere around 50mm an hour enables courses to be played on soon after heavy rainfall. zeolite to improve the nutrient and water holding capacity as well. Considering the price of it is comparable to generic turf underlay. I’m a fan of using it in gardens with busy kids, dogs and areas susceptible to high foot traffic. We’ll cover the topic of improving water efficiency of sand profiles during the chat we’ll have about turfing in the future.
Our last category covers wetland and structural soils. In brief, wetland soils are intended to be inundated with water, which makes them prone to anaerobic conditions. These blends aren’t readily available and require pre ordering. When it comes to this media, I suggest you invest in the book ‘Soils for Landscape Development’ from Elke Haege and Simon Leake. This will enable you to be better informed on what’s required for this challenging application.
So now we come to structural soils. These are medias that have been designed to increase soil volumes for trees within heavily built environments such as roadways, carparks and other areas that require a stable growing media for tree roots to inhabit and exploit resources beneath concrete and other impervious structures that must remain stable. The soil can be built upon without the risk of settling or compaction. Structural soil is basically a blend of blue metal with a loamy soil mixed through for the roots to obtain moisture and nutrients from. The particle or aggregate sizes are what’s important. Railway cobble with sizes ranging from 37 – 63mm is used as the principal aggregate. This is then blended with a loamy soil for moisture and nutrient retention. The importance of gap grading is vital with structural soils. If the grades aren’t correct then the loamy soil will segregate
from the large aggregates and settle at the bottom of the profile, thus making the media useless for the tree to exploit. Basically, we’re aiming for voids of around 8mm between the blue metal cobbles. These voids have been deemed to be sufficient for feeder roots to grow through without expanding to the point where the structure above will be lifted or adversely affected. Pretty amazing stuff in my opinion and an excellent example of the importance of science within our profession.
Another element within AS 4419 that I haven’t touched on yet is the presence of plant propagules within soils.
Propagules are vegetative structures such as rhizomes, corms, bulbs and seeds to name a few. They’re most likely to be weeds and obviously spell trouble. The standards state that all soils ‘should’ not contain plant propagules rather than ‘shall’ not. The difference between should and shall is that should is a recommendation whereas shall is mandatory. Buying from a familiar and
reputable supplier is probably the safest way to avoid the hassle of inheriting weeds in your soil blends. Apart from the merchant’s reputation of selling a quality product, there is no legislated buyers protection against weeds within the standards.
Our ability to successfully grow plants amongst buildings, on structures, on disturbed lands and other challenging environments is what separates us as horticulturists and landscape practitioners from the numerous other trades within the building industry who presume our work is just a matter of dumping soil and sticking a load of plants in. Be proud of the science you already know, what you are continuing to learn and the important role we play in the construction process.
Let’s never forget that without our profession, the buildings look stark, wildlife seems missing, summer temperatures are much higher, the wellbeing of the community is much poorer and the disconnect mankind has with nature continues to grow. LC

Toyota skid steer reliability to help grow LH Excavations
LH Excavations, based in Sydney, recently purchased a pair of Toyota Huski skid steer loaders as part of a business expansion that has seen it open an equipment hiring arm, LH Hire.
Since its inception seven years ago, LH Excavations has used equipment from a variety of manufacturers but has chosen to add TMHA to its roster to support the LH Hire business.
LH Excavations owner Lee Heares said that he needed skid steers for the fleet business that could be depended on to work day in, day out, and previous experience using Toyota equipment meant he knew what to expect from the brand.
“I’ve hired their gear through other people before – they’re just good, simple, reliable machines. They’re very easy to use,” he said.
The exceptional reliability and mechanical simplicity of the Huski skid steers made them the perfect fit for the hire fleet, which will likely also be called upon to assist the excavation side of the business.
“I just like that it’s very simple,” he said. “A lot of the gear coming out now is all computerised, there’s too much to fail.
“I find these are just a simple, tough machine in my eyes and I like that. And they’re reliable.
28 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > On the cover
A booming excavations business has turned to the legendary reliability and performance of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA), as it establishes its own hire fleet of machines.
“Every machine I’ve been in with the Huskis, they’re always going, they’re never broken down.”
TMHA area sales manager Peter Bower added that the reliability and mechanical simplicity of Toyota skid steers were common reasons for purchase, due to the critical importance of having functional workplace equipment.
“Simplicity is what a lot of people like about our products,” Mr Bower said. “I would say the majority of our customers come to us for things like that. They are very effective and very reliable.”
LH has ordered two Huski skid steer loaders – a 3.1-tonne 5SDK8 and a smaller 1.1-tonne 4SDK4 unit perfect for smaller applications like backyard DIY.
Mr Heares said LH Excavations saw the opportunity to expand its business after finding itself regularly lending out its equipment.
“The idea was pretty much borne from requests from others to use our gear. We could see there was a demand in the market for a new offering,” he said.
“Having the excavation business and then having people asking to loan the gear out, we saw the opportunity to start a hire company, and it’s taken off pretty well.”
Mr Heares said he would happily recommend TMHA to others in the industry, remarking that any company offering machines with the quality of his Toyota Huski units would get his blessing.
He also praised the easy and hassle-free relationship developed with TMHA, thanks to the help provided by Mr Bower.
LH Excavations has stated its ambition to grow its business and add more units to its hire operation.
“We don’t want to be a small company, we want to strive to be someone bigger,” Mr Heares said. “The doors aren’t shut for us in terms of growing, so it’s just the time now to keep the cash flow high and keep buying more machines.”
LH Excavations started seven years ago as a one-man operation, with Mr Heares getting his start when a friend bought him a machine to excavate his house.
Slowly buying machines and taking on new workers, Mr Heares and his partner Eleni Kamper expanded the business to the point where it now employs six staff in Sydney’s southern suburbs.

Fulton Bricks & Paving Supplies
Pier caps add instant charm to fencing
Fulton Bricks & Paving Supplies has carved out a strong niche in the residential and commercial landscaping market courtesy of its stylish and durable product range, with the Melbourne-based business known for its selection of pier caps, designed to enhance the aesthetics of brick and concrete piers and fences.
Fulton Bricks & Paving Supplies was established back in 2010 and owner Kerry Warford has said that a lot has changed since then. Kerry says that his yard is better known as ‘The Brickyard or Fulton Brickyard’ and back when he first bought The Brickyard it was a very basic yard.
Kerry told LCM that he has put a lot of time and effort into building the yard up to what it is today and feels like all his hard work is finally starting to pay off. These days
Fulton Brickyard presides over an extensive product range, capable of adding colour and character to landscaping projects of all types and sizes, with its portfolio including products made by renowned Australian manufacturers, which now include his own manufactured line of Pier Caps and other Pressed Sand Cement Products.
“We make a lot of different styles of pier caps,” he says. “We also make wall capping, letterboxes and can even make the actual pillars for the Pier caps to sit on. We sell a large range of products, including retaining wall products, paving, garden edging and natural stone. Pretty much all your landscaping supplies.”
Fulton Brickyard additionally offers a wide selection of new and secondhand bricks; along with sleepers, artificial turf, natural stone, grey blocks, letter boxes and pool coping; with its product range complemented by innovative expert advice, enabling superior and cost-effective project delivery.

Pier caps an increasingly niche market
Fulton Brickyards Pier capping range and other pressed sand cement products is just one of the elements of its business that helps it stand out in the landscaping market.
As Kerry explains, pier capping production has become more and more specialised in recent years, with only a limited number of businesses now actively involved in Australia.
“There’s not many people out there anymore that actually use traditional methods to manufacture pier caps, wall capping or pillars,” he comments. “Because of this, it’s become a very niche market.”
For this reason, when Terry Masterson approached Fulton Brickyard, bringing with him his extensive pier cap manufacturing knowledge, it made sense to harness his expertise, with Kerry noting, “He’s been making pier caps for over 40 years; Terry has been making these products for that long that I wouldn’t be surprised if he could make these in his sleep,” he says
Terry told LCM that he had initially started in the industry straight out of school in the 1970s, and moved over to Fulton Brickyard almost five years ago, “I’m still here to this day making pier caps at 63 years of age.”
Terry says that it is extremely important to follow the proper production processes, including the fundamental of getting the pier capping mix right, Terry simply observed that “you’ve got to know what you’re doing”.
“That’s why they named a cap after me called the Masterson,” he comments “They’re selling terrific. It’s only taken 63 years to get my name up in lights!”

Strong demand for pier caps
Fulton Brickyard has been enjoying a particularly busy 2022, and its pier caps in particular have been in high demand, with it not only catering for demand in the local market in and around Melbourne, but also supplying interstate customers.
Terry told LCM that he has been hard at work in recent times, overseeing and producing many pier caps for a range of different projects.
“I’m actually making Mastersons right at this minute – we make pier caps for both residential customers and builders –and we’re flat-out,” he says. “We’re now sending pier caps interstate, including Sydney, Tasmania and Queensland.”
Kerry additionally notes that Fulton Brickyard is poised to capitalise on the momentum it has been building throughout the year, with a strong platform in place to service the landscaping sector heading into the warmer months and 2023.
“It’s quite busy at the moment,” he comments. “Even during winter, when it’s normally quieter, it’s been very busy.”
Fulton pier caps: Range backed by expert advice
Fulton Brickyard backs its pier caps range with comprehensive support and advice – from how pier caps can enhance a landscaping project, how to choose a suitable style and colour, how to install and even how to clean and maintain their pier caps.
When it comes to choosing pier caps, Fulton Brickyard notes that they serve as both protection from weather and other damaging factors and as a decorative element, with them recommending:
• Size – this will depend on what needs capping. The Brickyard has thick and thin wall capping to suit single and double-brick fencing, letterboxes and pillars that come in different heights to help if council permits are involved and several different sizes of each cap design to suit most sized pillars.
• Material – pier caps can be made from many different products. Fulton Brickyard’s caps are made the traditional way with pressed sand cement ensuring the finished product will be strong.
• Colour – keep it simple and choose a colour that fits the rest of the look (painting is also an option which will

seal and protect your products at the same time).
• Roof shape – traditional pier caps have a pyramid-shaped roof, making them a statement feature on their own, providing years of protection and a neat finish, while some pier caps are flat, making them suitable for affixing other adornments on top.
Fulton’s pier caps are available in a wide range of styles and sizes, providing customers a number of options when it
comes to adding character to their fencing, while it also offers wall capping that fits single or double brick walls.
Fulton Brickyard have many designs of pier caps. A few examples of popular styles include:
• Richmond pier cap – a traditional style topped with a practical, modern pyramid finish and featuring a layered profile at the base, designed to suit the majority of homes and properties.
• Albert pier cap – makes a bold statement
on a fence or wall, with the curve of its profile adding an attractive soft feature.
• Small Pyramid – a traditional Victorian style topped with a sharp pyramid finish and more detailed layers at the base conveying elegance.
Fulton’s pier cap sizes comprise: 350 x 350mm, 470 x 350mm, 470 x 470mm, 590 x 470mm and 590 x 590mm, amongst other sizes.

“The true zero tail swing JCB 48Z-1 mini digger is incredibly manoeuvrable even in the most confined spaces because there’s no rear overhang outside the footprint of the tracks”, said JCB CEA Product Manager, Glenn McLeod.
“The efficient 2.2-litre Perkins 404D-22 engine delivers 35.7kW at 2000rpm powering the 48Z-1 and providing the optimum fuel efficiency.”
Tonne for tonne of material moved, the 48Z-1 is a leader in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency.
Tracking performance is smooth and precise, ensuring high dozer capabilities and fast travel times. To increase productivity, the auto kickdown motors automatically adapt to changes in terrain, increasing productivity and reducing operator fatigue.
The JCB 48Z-1 generates huge bucket tear-out forces of 38kN and dipper forces of up to 22kN. What’s more, by perfectly
matching the boom and dipper, JCB has created optimal dig end geometry, helping you to work and load in confined areas with ease. Bucket rotation is a huge 181˚, offering great spoil retention during truck loading.
Smooth, precise and balanced multifunctioning is easy with this excavator, courtesy of a premium closed centre
hydraulic system that provides improved flow sharing.
With class-leading greasing intervals of 500 hours, you can expect minimal downtime. While the cab monitor provides alerts on your excavator’s diagnostic status.

and noise levels. “There’s also a one-touch idle feature that conserves fuel too, “said Glenn. Programmable auto idle can also be activated when the controls have been inactive for a period of time.
The 48Z-1 mini can control engine speed for different hydraulic flows by simply cycling through four different power bands: Light, Eco, Heavy and Heavy Plus. This means you can tailor performance to any application.
Load-sensing hydraulics are standard-fit on the 48Z-1. This innovative feature means that your hydraulics only consume power on demand, conserving fuel for when you need it most.
Fully ROPS and TOPS compliant, the 48Z-1 provides the ultimate protection to both cab and operator. For further safety JCB’s safety lever lock fully isolates this mini digger’s hydraulic functions to prevent unintended movement.
“Our unique 2GO system ensures your mini excavator hydraulics can only be operated in a safe lockable position via two separate inputs,” said Glenn.
“An overload screen displays a bar chart from green to red, indicating whether the overload point is close or exceeded. Once the limit is passed, the buzzer sounds and the bar flashes to warn the operator.”
A large track frame width and low centre of gravity helps the JCB 48Z-1 to offer amazing stability. This powerful small digger also offers amazing visibility, ensuring easier,
safer trench digging and manoeuvring. This is thanks in part to a 70/30 front screen split. While the upper screen swings into an overhead storage position, the lower screen can be removed and stowed inside the cab.
All dig end and dozer greasing intervals on a JCB 48Z-1 mini digger are best-in-class at 500 hours, thanks to graphite impregnated bronze bushes; needless to say, this saves you time and money. JCB has packaged the bushed kingpost with these machines further reducing overall whole of life cost. An open frame undercarriage with sloping track legs also makes cleaning easier.
There are no plastic external body panels on the new JCB 48Z-1 small excavator; instead, this machine features 100% high strength pressed steel bodywork.
Colour-coded hydraulic hoses make for easy identification, while dozer hoses are simple to replace because they terminate at the bulkhead. The wide-opening steel bonnet and external fuel indicator make it easy to fill this mini excavator’s tank from ground level.
Remove two bolts to lift out your digger’s entire cab floor, giving you full access to the main control valve spools, hydraulic connections, and many other components for inspection or replacement.
The JCB 48Z-1 mini digger features an extremely spacious cab, with storage galore, a phone tray, stowage net and a cup holder. The whole area is accessed easily and safely via a large door.
The deluxe fully adjustable suspension seating provides great comfort for excavator operators and features independent adjustable positions for the ultimate in ergonomics. There’s a radio, 12V phone charger and powerful, efficient air conditioning system with 8 vents for added comfort during hot days in the cab.
Boasting an innovative rotary controller and easy touch switches that have been specially designed for easy operation, with ergonomic electro-hydraulic dozer control as standard, operators can achieve smooth and precise grading control.
You can alternate quickly between single/ hammer and double-acting auxiliary flow functions thanks to a convenient switch in the cab.
You can easily adjust and programme flow settings for specific attachments, with a built in memory to store your settings so that they can be easily retrieved between jobs. Information such as service and machine diagnostics help the operator to keep on top of the status of the machine. Alerts and service interval countdowns will keep you up to date, and always one step ahead of the possibility of downtime.
The JCB 48Z-1 really is the ultimate mini excavator if you are looking for a strong and reliable machine that offers safety and ease of operation as standard.

Caterpillar B Model Hammer
Caterpillar introduced its latest range of smaller Cat® B Model hammers to the market a few years ago which are becoming a popular addition to many Cat compact equipment owners setup. These hammers have been designed to complement its existing range of H-series Hammers and are suited for customers looking for a reliable hammer option on jobsites where rock or concrete breaking requirements are more of an occasional requirement than outright production.
To achieve this, Caterpillar designed its B Model range which are compatible with the range of Cat® Next Generation Mini Excavators from 1 tonne to 10 tonnes in machine weight. While this comes with less overall features than the range of Cat H-series hammers, it continues to provide the durability and performance you would expect from Caterpillar. Some key aspects of the Cat B Model hammer can be outlined below:
1. Cat B Model hammers are designed and manufactured to strict Caterpillar standards using many parts commonly used on machine and products produced by the company. This makes accessing repair or replacement parts easier as items are readily available from the world-renowned Caterpillar and Cat dealer parts network.
2. Cat B Model hammers have 30% to 40% fewer parts than its previous design providing for a reliable and durable hammer with less chance of unscheduled repair.
36 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Equipment and product reviews Construction Equipment
3. Cat B Model hammers are performance matched to Caterpillar machines to provide the best overall balance between hammer breaking power and productivity, as well as protect against unnecessary fuel use or excessive engine wear.
4. Ease of Maintenance I – All B Model hammers can be maintained or recharged on the jobsite. Access to the charging port, testing port and greasing port can all be done without the need to remove the hammer from the machine or remove the head bracket from the hammer.
5. Ease of Maintenance II – Cat B Model hammers have lower bushings that are field replaceable in around 30 minutes, eliminating one of the major costs experienced with freeze-fitted lower bushings that require special tooling and can generally only be achieved at a workshop.
6. Ease of Maintenance III – The lower bushing can be rotated 90 degrees to effectively double the life of the bush. This can also be done in the field without need for special tooling.
7. Silenced Hammers – All Cat silenced hammers are fully enclosed with urethane and nylon isolation mounts to provide maximum possible sound reduction. These are maintenance-free and last the life of the hammer.

J & L Sultana proudly add new Ditch Witch
SK600 Mini Skid Steer to their fleet
The Ditch Witch SK600 is ideal for a range of tasks including site clean ups and installing irrigation or swimming pools.
Designed and constructed with the user in mind, the SK600 Mini Stand-On Skid Steer features a narrow footprint for tight workspaces and with both diesel and hydraulic power, a Kubota diesel engine (24.8hp/18.5kW) and 272kg rated operating capacity.
Joe Sultana from J & L Sultana Hire recently took delivery of his new SK600 and couldn’t be happier. “This is our second Ditch Witch SK600 we’ve purchased and it’s a great addition to our fleet,” said Joe.
Joe and the team at J & L Sultana are highly skilled earthmoving and excavation specialists with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Specialising in limited access excavation Joe and his team utilise their fleet of cutting-edge equipment to get where many machines can’t.
Getting into and through narrow spaces was a critical factor for Joe and his team when selecting their new machine. “The narrow (850mm) frame of this Ditch Witch SK600 is a massive bonus for us allowing us to move material through tight commercial and residential areas,” said Joe.
With class-leading (45LPM) hydraulic power to the attachment, the SK600’s strength and performance can easily be felt when operating the machine. While being designed for maximum productivity the power and control of the Ditch Witch SK600 ensures a smooth, balanced and comfortable ride for the operator.
The operator’s platform is best in class and does a great job at providing a comfortable ride and taking the jolt out of the operation of the machine. Adding to the operator’s comfort factor is the optimised hydraulic system, which has increased both performance and comfort.
While gaining access into tight spaces is a massive feature, the hydraulic power and 272kg rated operating capacity is ideal for moving big loads up and into the skip bin or truck. The 1.93m hinge pin height means unloading the big bucket loads will make short work of material piles.
The SK600 is not only robust and narrow but extremely versatile thanks to its ability
to handle a wide range of attachments.
From a 4 in 1 bucket to augers, backfill blades, grapples and palette forks, the SK600 makes light work of mulch, wood chips, big chunks of branches and thicker sections of tree stumps and trunks to move around punching well above its weight.
For Joe and his team operator comfort is also a deciding factor when purchasing new machinery. “The operator’s platform on the SK600 features a dampener that you can adjust to your weight, and when operating the machine, this suspension smooths out the ride considerably, minimising the impact on operator knees and backs.
“The way the colour-coded controls are laid out is straightforward ensuring new operators can pick it up quickly and to manoeuvre the machine there is a single joystick, which can be a much easier option than the dual lever system. You can drive the machine with two fingers on the joystick, with the other three fingers from that same

Yamaguchi compact tracked mini dumpers thrive in tight spaces
The Yamaguchi range of tracked mini dumpers has made a strong impression in the local market since being launched by heavy equipment sales and service specialist Semco Group, with the Japanese designed and manufactured machines decked out to get the job done efficiently and effectively in tight spaces.
All models in the range – spanning five compact mini dumpers, weighing in from 380kg through to 1380kg – run Kubota diesel engines, and feature a low centre of gravity, while low ground pressure impact and distributed ground contact minimises risk on sites where infrastructure may lie close to the surface.
In addition to this, a notable advantage of using tracked machines is the ability to traverse construction trenches, while minimal ground disturbance is also beneficial in coastal areas, which may comprise canals and waterways, soft or sandy terrain, or other unstable surfaces.
The range is narrow in width and capable of being safely manoeuvred through tight spaces, providing an efficient option when working job sites where space is at a premium and where it may not be practical to deploy an excavator or compact track loader.
The range, designed for simple operation and easy maintenance, consists of the following models:
• WB06 – pedestrian operated, weighs in at 380kg, measures in at 780mm in width, and has a payload capacity of 600kg; runs a Kubota OC60 4.4 kW engine, maximum speed of 5km/h.
• WB06HL – pedestrian operated, weighs in at 465kg, measures in at 725mm in width, and has a payload capacity of 600kg (can lift a 600kg payload up

RotoFlex® by Blundstone
World-Leading, Biomechanically
Designed Safety Footwear
Blundstone has always been a consumer-led business, researching and identifying those products its customers need and want and understanding the role Blundstone products play in their lives. Over the past three years the business has invested in a massive, multi-layered research project which has created an even greater depth of understanding of today’s worker and the footwear they want to be wearing tomorrow.
These consumer insights have led to the development of Blundstone’s most technologically advanced safety footwear range, RotoFlex®, designed utilising biomechanical principles to provide an outstanding level of comfort and safety for wearers. The evolution of new materials and world-leading technologies has been a game changer in the development of these safety boots, which Blundstone are confident will increase consumer expectations of the Australian safety footwear market.
“The research has shown without doubt that wearers want better performing work boots,” says Adrian Blandford, Blundstone’s Global Work & Safety Range Manager. “They want them to be strong, lightweight, offer good grip and manoeuvrability as well as high protection for the user. The most common injuries occurring on work sites include musculoskeletal injuries and ankle
and knee injuries caused in falls and slips.”
Other concerns and priorities for wearers included durability and quality of componentry and materials; pain-free, all-day comfort with ankle flexibility and movement; thermal regulation with ventilation to increase airflow and a sole that provides ergonomics, longevity, stability, and traction.
As an outcome of the research, Blundstone embarked on a journey to ‘build’ safety boots that would address all the above concerns. “We have built them new from the ground up. This is something the safety footwear market in Australia has been demanding for many years,” says Blandford.
A collaboration with the University of Tasmania’s School of Health Science’s Biomechanics experts, resulted in the RotoFlex range of six new styles – four unisex and two designed specifically for

women. These are truly new ‘whole-of-boot’ designs, based on biomechanical research and evidence to create a boot system that is safer, more comfortable, better performing and more durable. RotoFlex is a range of boots where stability meets the freedom to move, allowing the wearer’s foot to rotate and the ankle to flex to avoid injury.
“Every single component used in the construction of the RotoFlex range has been researched, tested and trialled to ensure we deliver truly innovative, better performing safety footwear. Our design team and technicians looked at multiple options for each element and selected the best performing, most appropriate product, and if they couldn’t find the perfect piece, they went and created it so we could deliver best-in-market safety footwear,” says Blandford.
The biomechanical systems central to the RotoFlex design comprises four unique elements – GripTek® HD – a strong foundation from the ground up; Fortalite® –compression-resistant composite toe cap; AirCell – ventilating, zoned airflow footbed, and SoftCell® – all-encompassing comfort design, along with a host of componentry and materials critical to the performance of the product. SoftCell also incorporates Infinergy® E-TPU, a super elastic energy foam which is used in top brand sports shoes. This soft and resilient compound provides enhanced cushioning and reduces the impact of every step taken.
The RotoFlex range has been developed with all the principles of Blundstone’s Every Step Better (ESB) program front and centre
of their decision-making process. ESB encapsulates an ongoing commitment to three key pillars: People, Planet, Product, and with the mission ‘to make every step we take better than our last’. In line with Blundstone’s commitment to minimise impact on the environment, the boot’s lining and laces are made with 100% recycled materials, and the heel grip, insole, and counter stiffener utilise sustainable raw materials.
Throughout this process, Blundstone has developed a greater understanding of what safety boot wearers want, need, and expect in their footwear. “We utilised our consumer research insights to design safety boots with the features workers have been looking for – RotoFlex is the result. We are very proud to launch our RotoFlex range.”
“RotoFlex will be the benchmark for boots in the safety footwear market,” says Blandford. The product can back up best-in-class claims: trial results, comfort ratings, durability and componentry testing are all rating at never-seen-before levels. Blundstone is a safety footwear brand that Australian workers relate to, and we aim to increase this with the delivery of a premium, lightweight, super-specced product they will love.”

TRUEGRID Australia
Let’s all be part of the solution!
After four years of providing clients with imported TRUEGRID for their projects, in early 2022 TRUEGRID commenced manufacturing in Southeast Queensland. TRUEGRID is the only true permeable paving product that offers such versatility in a wide range of applications.
What is the problem?
We used to get floods sweeping through our cities once every couple of centuries. These “100-year floods” were caused by severe weather events or cyclones on coasts. Now, though, it seems there’s a 100-year flood every couple of years.
So, what’s changed?
It’s true that, since the early ’90s, rainfall levels have been well above average. But that’s only a part of the problem!
As people build more and more roads, parking lots, and developments, the ground is covered by roofs, concrete, asphalt, and gravel; up to 40 per cent of city land is now covered in concrete and asphalt. When it rains, there’s no place for the water to go, meaning that even something as simple as heavy rainfall could cause flooding — no cyclone required.
Natural undeveloped land can absorb a portion of rainfall volume. However, the moment water hits pavement, it creates runoff. In cities, that runoff picks up pollutants — oil, petroleum products, hydrocarbons, heavy metals — making it
problematic in terms of not only water damage, but also water pollution.
Rain and severe weather won’t stop, and neither will development. But if we want to protect our homes, our drinking water, and our Earth, we must be smarter about the materials we use to build and make positive changes to the way in which we use and cover our Country.
The solution
Now 100% made in Australia, using 100% recycled materials sourced from high grade industrial Australian waste, TRUEGRID is now able to challenge conventional thinking and disrupt traditional paving methods; to create a better, cleaner, less toxic environment.
Suitable for commercial, industrial and residential uses in place of concrete, asphalt, gravel and even grass stabilisation, TRUEGRID’s website now lets you calculate the difference you can make to the environmental outcomes. A standard car park in TRUEGRID Pro Plus takes 129kg of plastic from landfill and detains nearly 2000 litres of water*.
Not only does TRUEGRID resolve multiple environmental outcomes, it also has the added benefit of significant cost savings and 100% land utilisation.
Availability
TRUEGRID currently provides wholesale distribution and can be supplied for both small- and large-scale jobs, on demand, to any state in Australia and NZ.
Manufactured by Evolve Group, who are Australia’s pre-eminent, multiple award-winning hardware accelerator and product commercialisation facility located in Brisbane. TRUEGRID provides peace of mind with an ISO 9001 rating.

Foamstream hits the Australian market through dealer partner
Weedingtech Australia
What is Foamstream?
Foamstream is the leading herbicidefree solution for controlling unwanted vegetation including weeds, moss, and algae. Its patented low-pressure process combines hot water and biodegradable foam, made from natural plant oils and sugars, making it safe for use around people, animals, and delicate environments. With our lance sets, it can also be used for chewing gum removal, pressure washing and general sanitation jobs too, making it a highly effective, all-round, green space and urban management system.
How does it work?
The active ingredient in the process is the heat in the hot water. The foam simply acts as an insulating blanket over the top of the hot water, ensuring heat is not lost to the atmosphere.
Using their industry-leading machinery, Foamstream is applied to vegetation at lowpressure and can be used in all weathers. Once it hits the vegetation and covers it, the foam creates a thermal blanket over the vegetation and the water.
What does this mean?
Foamstream provides the most effective way of killing vegetation, meaning fewer treatment cycles are needed per year comparted to any other alternative thermal method of weed control. By needing fewer treatment cycles, less labour is needed over the course of the year, reducing overhead costs for customers.

In addition to killing the plant, Foamstream also sterilises surrounding seeds and spores that haven’t yet germinated, helping reduce future weed growth.
By combining the most effective method, the fewest treatment cycles per year and the ability to sterilise seeds and spore, Foamstream offers customers the lowest cost of ownership and operation cost in the alternative herbicide-free space. As Foamstream can also be used for so much more than just weed control, the commercial case for using Foamstream over alternatives comes highly attractive. LC

The Top Design Trends Dominating Our Backyards
Outdoor spaces have never been more in the spotlight. As we head into the warmer months, improving your outdoor space can be an affordable and achievable way to improve your lifestyle, and show your creative flair. Small outdoor projects and DIY-friendly tasks are an investment in your homes’ ‘kerb appeal’ and can increase the value of your home.
When we think of signature style, we usually think about fashion and home décor as expressions of personality, however, your outdoor space is another opportunity to showcase your personal style. Here Jason Hodges, award-winning landscape design expert and Adbri Masonry brand ambassador, shares his design tips for
recreating the top five trending outdoor themes that can be personalised to suit your own style.
Hamptons Garden
Renowned for its coastal-chic styling, brought to life with a colour palette of whites with ocean blues, neutrals and stripes, the Hamptons style has inspired renovation projects across the globe.
Australians have had a love affair with the Hamptons style for over a decade and this trend has only increased through the recent renovation boom. “The incredibly popular Hamptons styling trend is not limited to indoor decorating. Key design themes for a Hamptons garden include; lush green lawns, privacy hedging, and paved
patio areas with styled outdoor settings,” says Jason.
Starting with paving as the foundation for your backyard renovation is a simple yet effective way to transform the space. “Paving may only take up 20% of your yard, but it draws most of your attention,” says Jason. When choosing the best product, the most important thing you will need to consider is the type of traffic your pavers will be exposed to, the heavier the traffic the thicker the paver selected should be.
To achieve the Hamptons look, consider colour and texture. Light-coloured pavers will complement greenery. Jason recommends a neat, square, large format paver like Adbri Masonry’s Euro Classic or

> Design Trends
From Hamptons to Balinese, Landscape Designer, Jason Hodges, shows us how to recreate an outdoor space that reflects your personal style.
Euro Stone in the 400x400mm profile. Opt for the vibrancy of the light Cyprus colour or the mid-grey tone or the Zurich colour as a striking base for your paved area.
Balinese Sanctuary
“The essence of Bali starts with a villa experience, a personal sanctuary away from your typically busy life,” says Jason. Homeowners can create a dream Baliinspired oasis by following some simple design inspirations, colour schemes and clever planting that will make your outdoor space look lush and enjoyable all year round.
Think textured charcoal stepping stone pavers, a collection of greens through the planting scheme, bamboo screens and smooth pebbles to complete the look. Choose agaves, and frangipanis or bird of paradise plants to keep the tropical theme,” recommends Jason.
To perfect this theme, Adbri Masonry Natural Impressions Duostone offers a contrast of a natural stone-like texture and a contemporary, smooth surface are ideal for retaining walls to create varying levels of interest, and Adbri Masonry Euro Stone is the best choice for courtyards and garden paths. These pavers have been lightly shotblast, to exfoliate the surface and expose the natural aggregates found within. Additionally, they’re slip resistant, making them a perfect option for use around pools and water features.
Palm Springs Modern
Palm Springs boasts one of the world’s most recognisable residential ‘looks’ and right now, it’s one of the biggest style inspirations for Australian homeowners. Made famous by mid-century modern designs featuring overhanging flat roofs, the iconic dry climate landscaping and accentuated furnishings. “Palm Springs is a design theme that perfectly suits the style
of our homes with a focus on the outdoor areas and making the most of the climate,” says Jason.
The Palm Springs look starts with a contemporary coastal chic design infused with a touch of glamour that presents in a soft pastel colour palette and features décor pieces for a resort-style feel. Create the look with three to five iconic Californian fan palms, space agaves through the garden bed and plant out a feature cactus garden.
“Choose hard-wearing pavers over harder-to-maintain turf, use gravel in your garden beds and stay true to the pastel colour scheme. Embrace empty space, this is not a garden design to clutter,” adds Jason. “Adbri Masonry’s Verastone block features an architecturally inspired shot blast surface texture that exposes the natural aggregate stones in each block. They can be used for garden steps, straight garden walls or retaining walls.”
The essence of Palm Springs style is a seamless indoor-outdoor transition that leads to generous outdoor spaces where clean lines are prominent. Create privacy in the space with Adbri Masonry’s Breeze Blocks. This contemporary block marks the return of a unique series of screening, privacy and ventilation masonry units. With a stylish diamond profile, use in designs to achieve airflow and natural light infiltration while retaining a sense of permanency and security.

Japanese Zen Style Australians’ love affair with Japan has been on the rise for years. Fortunately, Aussie homeowners can now bring the best of Japan into their backyards with a low-cost Zen-style garden. “Now more than ever, people want their backyards to be safe and private,” says Jason. Zen gardens are low maintenance, relaxing and enjoyable to be in.
“Create the look with varied textural elements and contrast between hard and soft landscapes; gravels and grass, feature stones of varying sizes and practical step stone pavers in greys or charcoals will set the mood. A Zen garden is designed to be a place to relax so by design, it should be low maintenance. Pot some feature plants, select a water feature for ambience and plant out some mini mondo grass,” says Jason.
Australian Rural Australia is blessed with a year-round climate and an incredible natural environment. For homeowners with a larger outdoor area, an Aussieinspired backyard is a great design choice because they’re as practical as they are visually pleasing. “The key to designing a good rural-inspired garden is to treasure your space and have discipline around how you fill it. I recommend taking full advantage of the space by creating an alfresco dining area. In adding a fire pit, you can make this area the central entertaining spot. Install some casual seating in the way of log stools and make maintenance easy by bordering the garden with a simple concrete Lawn Edge paver. Create some shade with a eucalyptus tree which will give you a special spot to enjoy throughout the day,” advises Jason.
Building the firepit is an easy DIY project using Adbri’s Miniwall blocks. For the patio areas and footpaths try using Adbri’s Havenbrick, a versatile concrete brick paver that’s easy to lay and offers a modern look with bevel on all four edges.

Cub Cadet Ultima ZTS1
I often see contractors who are either starting out or maintaining larger residential and small acreage using machines designed for residential use, which I think is a great steppingstone to commercial-grade machines as their businesses and budgets grow. Cub Cadet’s new Ultima Series ZTS1 will suit this type of application as well as the acreage homeowner.
This machine is different to a conventional zero-turn mower because it is fitted with a steering wheel rather than lap bars. I can see people who are not familiar with lap bar operation preferring this option.
Cub Cadet’s Synchro Steer provides four-wheel control where the front wheels steer in conjunction with the rear wheel drive, operating as it would in a conventional zero-turn. The added front wheel steer –rather than castor wheels following and rotating with the drive from the rear steer – creates greater manoeuvrability and ensures good stability on steeper terrain (rated up to 20 degrees on slopes).
I was also surprised about how forgiving it was on turf. I performed some hard U-turns at speed and there was less damage to the turf than would be from a
56 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Test drive WORDS: ANDREW TULLOCH
conventional zero-turn. I assume this is because the front steer wheels start the turn and therefore aid the rear wheels and create a less aggressive move with the same zero-turn result.
The ZTS1 I tested was fitted with a 46-inch deck, but it is also available in a smaller 42-inch with both decks fabricated and constructed from 11-gauge steel with reinforcements in the critical areas. The sealed ball bearing spindles are maintenance free and access to the top of the deck is good because the foot pan is removed with one bolt. There is a socket spanner to suit stored in its own holder on the machine for this purpose, which is a nice touch.

I like the deck lift/height adjustment mechanism. A foot-lift pedal raises the deck with minimal effort and a simple, easy-to-rotate dial can be turned to the desired height, so the operator can change height on the go. The foot deck lift also allows the operator to quickly lift the deck away from any potential obstacles that can quickly pop up in the cutting path. The only improvement I would make is an automatic lock in at the highest position when the deck is lifted, rather than having to turn the dial to the maximum height for it to stay in the highest position.
The power plant is Cub Cadet’s own engine – a 679cc V-Twin with good power for the applications I operated it in, however being the middle of winter in Sydney we didn’t have any excessively long or thick grass to attack. Access for maintenance around the engine is easy and a handy oil drain hose is fitted. The 5cm x 5cm tubular frame extends up and wraps around the engine for added protection. It also
has automotive grade corrosion protection for longevity.
Cub Cadet has not held back in the comfort department with a nice 51cm high back seat with armrests. The adjustable steering column allows the operator to easily mount or dismount with it in the upright position and then lower to a level to suit any operator or driving technique.
The steering wheel has rubber inserts for good grip and comfort, which made it a pleasure to whip around in tight situations, even at speed. Rubber mats fixed to the foot platform and driving positions create a non-slip surface whilst reducing vibrations adding to operator comfort.
The Cub Cadet Ultima Series ZTS1 proved to be a nimble and responsive machine and enjoyable to operate around tight curved garden edges at my own home.
Cub Cadet offers a three-year domestic warranty and a three-month commercial warranty. LM

Green energy fuelling green action around the world
Across Australia, we’re seeing government and business respond to climate change.
> Equipment and product reviews ZTR Mowers 60 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU
The Australian Government has stepped up its action to tackle the climate crisis as part of our country’s obligations under the Paris Agreement. It has committed to a new national emission reduction target of 43% below 2005 levels by 2030, which is an increase of 15 percentage points on previous commitments.
Playing a significant local role in getting to net zero
Local government in Australia can and does contribute significantly to overall government emissions reduction targets. Highly visible in their communities, the actions of a local government utilising green energy can also contribute to a positive reputation among its constituents.
Recent findings from energy efficiency consultancy, 100% Renewables, show that one in six Australian local councils have adopted a net zero target. Ten, including Maroondah City Council in Victoria and the City of Brisbane, are already carbon neutral.
Transitioning to electric maintenance vehicles around the globe
Looking internationally, many countries are seeing their local governments invest in electric maintenance vehicles.
Papeete, in French Polynesia, uses 100% electric street sweepers in keeping with its environmental protection values.
In Belgium, the Kruibeke Municipality has converted its ageing street sweeping fleet to electric vehicles.
In the Cities of Naples and Noicattaro in Puglia, Italy, they’re also using 100% electric street sweepers. Leading Italian cleaning services provider, Serit, which operates throughout the province of Verona, has a 100% electric fleet.
In Birmingham in the UK, they’re using a range of electric street sweepers. Also in the UK, Westminster City Council is cleaning
London’s West End with a 100% electric fleet of street cleaning vehicles.
Oslo in Norway has added 100% electric street sweepers to their fleet to meet their emissions reduction targets.
The City of Mountain Brook in Alabama, USA, has switched to 100% electric mowers, leaf blowers and other outdoor maintenance equipment and saw an immediate drop in noise complaints. And because of the quietness of the machines, their outdoor maintenance crew can also get started early before the heat of the day kicks in during summer.
Green technology that’s now available is dependable. It’s been tried, tested and proven to work efficiently, by leading councils around the world who have adopted this technology to achieve their net zero targets sooner.

A world leading battery powered zero-turn riding mower
It is the weekend. You are in the driver’s seat. You are flying through the yard, gliding through grass like butter. You lean into the corners, handling them with ease. You feel the wind and sun against your skin. You breathe in that fresh, cool morning air. You are in the EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower and you are loving every second of it.
Ultimate power. Zero emissions
EGO Power Plus is the most awarded cordless platform on the market. If you are familiar, you will know just how great battery power can be. If you are new to the platform, well, you will never look at petrol the same way again. The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower is the future of lawn care. Now it is finally available in Australia. Behind every great EGO is patented 56V ARC Lithium™ technology. It is the industries most advanced battery platform, with shock resistant design and intelligent power management and cooling, delivering unmatched power and performance. These
are not the batteries you bang out of your TV remote when they stop working. These super cells are the future.
The Z6 comes with four of them, totalling to 40.0Ah. That’s enough power to cut up to 2 acres of lawn on a single charge. You read that right. Your Z6 will not suddenly flash red, switch off and leave you stranded. It packs all the power of petrol, without the noise, fuss or fumes. When the batteries do run low, you will get a notification on your dashboard, directing you to the power bay in your garage. Smart, isn’t it?
While on the topic, the Z6 can recharge 40.0Ah in two hours. You know the dreadful
feeling of waking up on a sunny Sunday and realising your tools have no charge. It is not a problem here. Just plug your Z6 into your wall mounted charger, have a coffee, then get stuck into the yard.
> Equipment and product reviews ZTR Mowers 64 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU
Game changing features
The Z6 can tackle pretty much anything with four 10.0Ah batteries, but it can hold up to six. You may be asking yourself, ‘What happens when I add two more?’.
EGO call it ‘Peak Power’ and it is the equivalent of turbo charging your Z6. With a maxed-out battery bay, the Z6 can produce 3360 watts. That puts the Z6 on par with a 22-horsepower engine.
It is no secret that EGO’s 56V ARC Lithium technology™ is one of the best in the industry. That’s why the batteries that
power your Z6 are the same batteries that power every single EGO product. When you are done with the lawn, un-slot the batteries from your Z6, put them into your blower, trimmer or chainsaw, then get back to business.
Every backyard is unique, so you will be glad to hear the Z6 is customisable where it counts. It has adjustable blade speeds and cutting heights, as well as options for mulching, bagging and side discharge. It also has multiple driving modes: standard, control and sport.
Like all EGO products, ergonomics and comfort are front of mind in design. Which is great because you’ll be sitting in the Z6 a lot. It has an air ride suspension seat, which makes going over the uneven parts of your yard smooth sailing. Plus, there is a storage area with a USB port for your phone and two drink holders. Once you sit in a Z6, you might not want to get off.
What is in the box
The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Mower RRP is $8999. Out of the box, you will get the Z6 itself, mulching plug, four 10.0Ah batteries and a wall mounted charger. There is also a domestic five-year product and threeyear battery/charger warranty. Not that you will ever need it. If you are having second thoughts about your ride-on mower, register your interest in the Z6 today. You will never touch petrol again.

Mowing made easy with AEG
When mowing lawns is a big part of your day, a self-propelled model with variable speed is key to ending the day as fresh as when you started.
The AEG 58V 21" Brushless SelfPropelled kit (ALM58SP24) comes complete with 2 x 58V 4.0Ah batteries and a 4A charger to keep you going through the tough stuff for longer.
It automatically switches between batteries so there’s no need to stop and retrieve a fully-charged battery, or even carry an additional one with you.
It’s constructed with a heavy-duty 2mm steel deck for long life and the ability to withstand tough conditions, one-touch height adjustment trigger (18-75mm), mulch plug and a large 70-litre catcher. It also features new deck geometry that achieves lower cutting heights.
The 4A charger will fully charge the included batteries in around one hour each. The batteries feature overload and high temperature protection, as well as sealed casing for dust and moisture ingress protection.
If mowing smaller lawns is more in with your business, AEG has two options – a 58V model and an 18V model.
The 58V 18" model is like a ‘younger sibling’ to the 21" self-propelled version. Not self-propelled, it still has the same basic features as the bigger model – using 2 x 58V batteries on board for extended run times. It features three modes of mowing: catch, mulch and side throw.
The second smaller alternative is the FUSION 36V (2 x 18V batteries in series) 18" standard push mower (skin ALM18B and kit ALM18BS6), designed for outdoor tradies who have smaller lawns to mow
and maintain. It has a trade-tough FUSION brushless motor that is powered by the same 18V FORCE batteries as AEG’s 18V power tool range.
In kit form, the mower comes with 2 x 6.0Ah FORCE batteries and 2 x chargers.
This model, too, has 3 mowing options –catch, side throw or mulch. The catcher is 50 litres.
All three models feature reinforced steel collapsible handles and can be stored and transported vertically, to take up less space in your ute or trailer.
Like all the tools in the 58V and 18V garden range, there’s no downtime mixing fuel, constantly adjusting tricky chokes,
waiting on flooded engines or dealing with cumbersome pull cords. Just whack in a battery or two and off you mow.
AEG’s range of outdoor power equipment – in 58V and 18V – includes line trimmers, hedge trimmers, jet blowers, sprayers, brushcutters, chainsaws, pruning saws, post hole diggers and pole products. Plus, 18V FUSION Secateurs that take the strain out of multiple cuts in a day.

Weedtechnics Green Ninja Stealth Satusteam™ Weed Control Machine
With all the recent press about the dangers of chemical weed control it was the perfect time to explore a new option in weed control from Weedtechnics. The Green Ninja Stealth is the smallest and quietest unit in the Weedtechnics range and is ideally suited to landscape maintenance professionals.
This safe green system uses saturated steam from everyday water to obliterate weeds on contact, no chemicals and no toxic residue left in the soil. The Green Ninja uses a diesel burner powered from an electric motor to heat the water above boiling point to 120ºC.
The complex result the combination of saturated steam and boiling water (Satusteam™), which is delivered through various application devices at low pressure after passing through a depressurisation chamber.
There are three types of applicator heads for weed control with the Green Ninja: the versitech open head, covered head and spike. The open head is great for targeted applications in garden beds and hard surfaces such as cracks and crevases in pavers.
The covered head comes in three different sizes, covering areas with smaller weeds in and around plants to areas with large amounts of weed coverage. It is designed to be dragged along the surface of the ground, resulting in no off target damage.
I particularly liked the spike applicator, which allows the operator to jam the spike below the ground and inject the liquified steam directly in and around the bulbs of those extremely hard to kill species, such as Onion Weed and Nutgrass. Results are extremely fast compared to chemical herbicides.
After using the covered head on young ‘Farmers Friend’ weed seedlings it was
72 WWW.LANDSCAPECONTRACTOR.COM.AU > Eye on the industry
evident that the weeds were wilting and showing signs of discolouration within minutes and totally brown and crispy within a couple of hours. Results on Couch grass in hard surface cracks were just as impressive. When attacked with the open head the Couch was browned totally after 24 hours, which is much faster than a chemical application on this tough weed.
The ‘Stealth’ model is quiet with an electric motor making it great for residential and noise-sensitive sites, but there is a ‘Pro’ model available with a petrol engine, which would suit many applications where there is no power available.
The machine came on a very well set up trailer and I believe there are about a dozen customisable options available with trailer packages to suit the Weedtechnics range.
The trailer that the Stealth was on had an electric winch to load the machine onto the trailer should the site determine that it needs to be removed from the trailer. There was a dedicated corner on the trailer to take a generator to power the machine if 240 volt power was not available. A 60m hose reel mounted on the front of the trailer enabled
me to spray far away from the machine, easily accessing residential backyards.
A great feature to the hose reel is an electric auto rewind, which can be operated from the hose reel itself or from a remote control ensuring effortless hose retrieval with no ‘hose rage’. The trailer also had a large water tank should mains water not be available. It is worth noting the Green Ninja only uses 5 litres of water per minute and can draw from an external tank if the unit is not mounted on a trailer with a tank.
Overall, I think this weed killing technology from Weedtechnics is an excellent product – it is environmentally friendly compared to traditional chemical weed control applications, results are faster and it is much safer for the operator.
An added bonus is that it also cleans. With a cleaning nozzle fitted hot water is sprayed under pressure to clean surfaces as you would do with a water blaster.
The beneficial difference to a conventional water blaster is the pressure is much lower, so it is not as harsh on the surface being cleaned and it is also a much faster process.

Enjoy the backyard all year round
Australia is blessed with a comfortable year-round climate that we’re lucky to enjoy. While that is true, backyard fire pits are fashionable, affordable and practical, and are becoming increasingly popular as we look to utilise the outdoor space in winter with functional landscaping features. Essentially, a fire pit is the new water feature; it’s a great addition to the backyard, transforming the outdoor area into a cosy and inviting space.
“The ambience a fire pit brings is worth the investment alone, providing an enjoyable feature for the garden and a natural gathering spot for socialising and entertaining. It’s a great focal point, I like to describe it as nature’s TV and people are naturally drawn to the campfire-like atmosphere,” explains landscape expert and Adbri Masonry brand ambassador, Jason Hodges.
Fire pits are one of the best DIY projects to enhance and change the way you utilise your outdoor area, creating an instant feature that brings both light and heat to your outdoor area. Fire pits come in many shapes and sizes and they are not all created equal. If you’re looking to entertain and have children or pets, the best option is a ‘family friendly’ fire pit made with concrete barrier blocks. These fire pits look great and provide extra safety by creating an attractive barrier around the fire, keeping flames out of reach of children and pets.
Here, Jason Hodges offers a simple step-by-step DIY guide to building your very own family-friendly fire pit.
Choose the right spot
It’s important to choose a spot that is far enough away from plants, fences, trees or anything flammable. Consider the wind and the direction it will blow smoke from the fire. You should also be able to walk around the fire with ease.
Start digging
Dig a circular hole for the base of the fire – a three-foot diameter creates enough space for a good-sized fire while keeping everyone close enough to be able to chat.
Prepare the base
Spread sand throughout the trench and level. You can use a mortar mix of 6 parts sand and 1 part dry cement for a stable base.
Start building
Use concrete blocks to start constructing the wall around the pit. Choose a block that enables circular walls or has specialty corner units to save you cutting the units. My first choice would be Adbri Masonry’s Miniwall blocks, a great choice for DIY. They are easy to stack in a circle, and give a great finish. For square and rectangular pits, use Versawall. If you are on a tight budget, using garden wall blocks can save you money as they double as a seating area, so no extra furniture is required.
Build your fire
Construct a tepee by stacking wood and kindling in the centre of the pit. Light the fire and enjoy all year around!

It is a great alternative to spraying chemicals in urban areas. With the ULiB 1500 battery, it can keep going even on the most demanding work sites.
• Powerful: unrivalled performance for intensive professional landscape and forestry work, with a cutting diameter of 420mm and speed of up to 6600 RPM.
• User-friendly: An essential asset for reducing the tedious work of intense working conditions. Toro Australia announces Ventrac distribution
In 2020 The Toro Company announced the purchase of Venture Products Inc, from Ohio, USA, the manufacturer of the innovative line of Ventrac-branded tractors and attachments.
Distribution of Ventrac Products in Australia remained unchanged at the time.
Toro Australia is now very pleased to announce that they will start selling and servicing Ventrac tractors and attachments direct to customers in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Tasmania and Northern Queensland only.
Brian Goodridge, Toro’s Equipment Product Manager said that Ventrac is a very innovative brand of equipment for golf course turf management, sports fields, school campuses, residential and commercial property maintenance, public green spaces, and agricultural uses.
“Tractors have articulating frames to make going around obstacles easier, and the products are able to tackle hills up to 30º slopes. This means you can get to those places you never thought a ride-on machine could mow.
“Over 30 different attachments are available for Ventrac tractors and these attachments attach or detach quickly without the use of tools. This really maximises what can be done with just one machine.
“We are pleased to be able to offer these innovative products locally and look forward to offering our customers the same sales and support services they already get from Toro Australia,” he said.

Professional indemnity insurance Essential facts
This insurance may have the provision for cover should for example:
• An architect is sued for creating a flawed house design after the owners had to pay to fix a flawed extension.
• A marketing agency who print a client’s brochure with incorrect contact details, resulting in the client commencing legal action against the agency.
It is important to understand how this type of cover works because many people think it does not apply to them, when it can provide an important line of defence in many different circumstances.
Don’t assume you can only take out professional indemnity insurance if you are a member of one of the traditional ‘professions’. You don’t have to be a doctor or a lawyer to take out this type of cover. In fact, anyone who is in a role in which they provide advice should consider whether professional indemnity insurance could provide protection from litigation.
Many professions such as plumbers, tree loppers and builders give advice, but don’t always take out professional indemnity insurance. They may be exposed if a customer follows their advice to their detriment.
Professional indemnity insurance only covers policy holders while a policy is live. If you have taken out a policy in the past, then it has lapsed, you will not be covered for claims that concern events that happened when the policy was active. This means professionals should consider whether they need to maintain professional indemnity cover even when they retire. In some professions, for instance accounting, there is a requirement to maintain cover even when you retire or leave the profession.
Professional indemnity insurance is a complex area and many insurers will not cover certain risks in policies. For instance, most insurers won’t cover builders and other entities in the construction sector for any damages that relate to building cladding, given the problems many strata buildings have encountered with flammable materials.
This means it is essential to read the fine print in policies and develop a real understanding about which professional risks are covered and which are not.

2022/2023?
If fashion makes you feel at sea, The Landscape Association has you covered. Our recent workshop hosted at Artisan Exterior’s beautifully immersive showroom in Artarmon featured products to achieve all the latest trends. Also, with an impressive line-up of speakers, the panel consisted of experts Shannon Decker (Panel Facilitator), Craig Howard, Adam Robinson and Grant Boyle, attendees were walked through what’s hot and what’s not.
For those not familiar with the panellists, Shannon Decker is the Director of Multi Award-Winning Blue Mountains landscape company Now & Zen Landscapes, established in 1999.
Adam Robinson is an award-winning Landscape Horticulturist, Stylist, Landscape and Interior Designer who founded his business, Adam Robinson Design, in Woollahra in 2011.
Grant Boyle is a Landscape Designer who founded Fig Landscapes in the Byron Shire of NSW in 2015. Together with Tim Sarathip Chaichana, they have founded Landare, manufacturing traditional Thai pottery, such as pots and planters, and importing them for sale in Australia.
Influences
Trends derive from all manner of sources, including global issues such as COVID, global financial pressures, climate change and conflicts. In Australia, the reaction is a strong desire to optimise our surrounding environments, a need for relaxation and home-comforts. This year, look for these themes:
• Resort-style living – lockdowns and uncertainty have led to a shift in priorities to a focus on attractive but functional homes with the flexibility to live and work as well as entertain.
• Reconnecting with nature – people are far more aware of the impact of their environment on good mental and physical

health driving a desire to reconnect with nature.
• Sustainability – climate change and global upheavals have led to a realisation that our environments and, consequently, our lifestyles are fragile. Increasingly, clients are looking for sustainable and ethical features and solutions. It is imperative that landscapers show them appropriate options and techniques.
• Easy maintenance – many people are still time poor so easy maintenance is often desirable. Stone, for example, needs little maintenance compared to decking and is hard wearing.
Landscaping styles
• Curves – rectilinear precision and sleek, immaculate formality are being replaced by luscious curves and fluid, organic, natural forms. Curves are inviting, tactile and eye-catching.
• Re-wilding – the process of restoring an area of land to its natural uncultivated state, is a popular way of reconnecting with nature. Lawns sown with wildflowers, seed heads left on flowers after bloom (creating skeletal beauty in winter), and leaving ornamental grasses to grow longer are all great examples of this trend. Also rethinking plant choices, for example using rosemary to spill over walls, olive trees for screening or thyme as ground cover.
Fashionable features
• Fire-pits, outdoor showers, pools, home gyms and barbecues – anything encouraging garden use.
• Productive gardens – the ‘slow down and grow your own’ culture is big, driven by people’s desire to eat local, organic, sustainable food and share these messages with their children.
• Curb gardens and sharing with community – more and more nature strips are being transformed, creating an opportunity to share the herbs, fruits and vegetables harvested with neighbours.
Colours
• Natural colours and 70’s style earthy tones are strong current trends. This is born of the desire to be grounded and calm after long periods of stress.
• Use warm foundation tones and neutrals, including terracotta, burnt caramel, rust and sand.
• Yellows representing hope are a favourite. Use shades of mustard, gold and bright canaries.
• Greens representing rebirth and renewal – use shades of clover, olive, blue-casted spruce.
• Grey is timeless but try for warmer greys to avoid creating a drab and lifeless space.
Materials
• Materials that visibly reflect nature are a big trend – rather than crisp stainless steel and perfection, think wood, stone, cane/rattan, and imperfect, real clay pots.
• Long-term quality and guaranteed durability – people are keen to do it once, get it right and invest in superior quality. Modified woods and engineered bamboo are all on point.
• Sustainability – understanding is growing that to be sustainable you don’t have to compromise on aesthetics – clients are willing to consider sustainable options when shown how.
• Stone – smaller format or random sizing looks more natural. Patterns such as herringbone, basket or simple brick layout can add touches of sophistication. Crazy paving and cobblestones are very on trend at the moment.
Declining trends
• Rendered walls – natural brick reflects the current desire for texture.
• Stencilled concrete is inauthentic and
lacks the connection with nature of real stone.
• Decking as screening – this style is formal and less natural than using plants.
Tying it all together
So, the question now is how to bring these elements together? Try these tips:
• Bring the inside outside by carrying interior lines through. For example, repeat an internal use of herringbone when creating outdoor paths.
• Choose outdoor furniture styles similar to the indoor furniture.
• Use a mood board to mock up a strong materials palette to be sure it works together.
• Remember, colours don’t have to match exactly, but they do need to relate to each other tonally. For example, if the indoor flooring is oak, use a warm coloured stone for the patio or use a feature stone for the paving from the same colour palette.
• Fabrics can be a great way to tell the story of your design. They are a simple but a highly effective and alluring way to use colour and to unite a design.

Industry united at The Landscape Show 2022
After two difficult years for the industry, all eyes were on The Landscape Show to recapture the spirit of community, collaboration and innovation that characterises the Victorian landscaping sector. With over 90 exhibitors on the floor, and a 1500-strong crowd pulsing through Caulfield Racecourse on June 22, the verdict is in: The Landscape Show 2022 was a huge success, cementing its place as LVML’s flagship event for landscaping professionals.
While getting up at the crack of dawn in the middle of a Melbourne winter may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, for landscapers attending The Landscape Show this year, hanging out at Caulfield Racecourse was a welcome break from the usual rain and wind that beckons at that time of year.
Reflecting on the event, Landscaping Victoria’s CEO, Megan Flower, is proud of how the event unites an industry as diverse as the landscaping sector.
“This year’s Landscape Show was a truly outstanding example of how the

landscaping industry can come together and co-create an event that meets the many needs of our industry,” she said.
“The quality of exhibitors was exceptionally high, and the feedback from visitors has been phenomenal.”
Zac Connell, Owner of Evergreen Garden and Landscape Solutions, who made the two-hour drive to Melbourne from Benalla, was pleased to be able to show his apprentice the latest cuttingedge products and technologies at the show.
“It’s just a good day to come and meet up with other landscapers, see different materials and products that we can use in the north-east,” he said.
“We had the opportunity to catch up with suppliers that we use, see new materials and fittings, and generally just had a good old day out.”
Landscape designers were also well represented at the show, with plenty of suppliers on hand to discuss and demonstrate their latest product innovations, as noted by Amy Taylor of COS Design.
“It’s fantastic to get out to an industry event like this to see what everyone has to offer, what’s on show, and to start updating our product list. It’s good to come out and see the products in person, and get an understanding of how the product works, and how it can be implemented in our designs onsite,” she said.
For exhibitors, The Landscape Show is a unique opportunity to get in front of landscapers, and build their profile. This year’s show attracted a strong line-up of exhibitors – both old and new – covering an array of landscaping needs, including

machinery, construction technology, greenlife, irrigation, workwear, design technology and more.
Callum McIntyre, Head of Sales at Natural Growth Partners – creators of the Tree Coach, an all-in-one planting and
watering system for optimal tree growth – lauded this year’s show for its diversity, with representation from all areas of the industry.
“Landscapers are a really big part of our customer-base, so we really wanted
to support the industry,” Callum said.
“Engagement-wise, this year was really good. We noticed a lot more people, and engagement was consistent throughout the show.”
First-time exhibitor, Jarred Telford of Madewell Products, was also impressed with the show, with their sustainable concrete reinforcement products attracting plenty of attention.
“For us, being at the Landscape Show was about exposure, as well as an education piece,” he said.
Plans are now underway for the 2023 show – with dates to be confirmed shortly – and Megan Flower is on a mission to ‘up the ante’ and deliver even more value for the industry.
“This has been the best show we’ve had yet, and I’m excited by the possibilities to make next year’s event even better.”

LIAWA hits a high note with landscape masterclass
It may have taken nearly two and half years to come to fruition because of the closure of the WA borders and Covid, but it was well worth the wait. Internationally renowned landscape designer and Melbourne-based Jim Fogarty made the trip west to meet LIAWA members to deliver a landscape masterclass of some note.
An audience of LIAWA members, sponsors and guests packed the Hall at the Camfield opposite Optus Stadium and were enthralled by Jim’s presentation, which included an in-depth look at award winning show gardens he had designed and built around the world. This included the Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Flower Show, Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, and the Gardening World Cup, Nagasaki Japan. Jim had one clear message for LIAWA: Australian gardens of the future must represent the Australian natural landscape. These landscapes are sustainable and will be able to tackle climate change.
As part of the evening the audience had the opportunity to ask questions to an elite industry panel, which included Hort Media personality Neville Passmore, nurseryman and accredited tree grower Craig Woodroffe, landscape designer Sam de Vries, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects member Tristan Pierce, acclaimed tree consultant Rob Bodenstaff and landscape sustainability expert Chris Ferreira.
Questions from the floor were varied surrounding the industry however the panel discussed at length the importance
of government recognition for the industry to assist in setting standards, an internal accreditation program (Master Landscaper) and how critical the TAFE training system needs to be re-evaluated so that the units taught line up with industry practices.
LIAWA President Darren Sienor said, “LIAWA has landed, just look at the rows of people who have come out to support this event. It proves LIAWA has a massive role to play in supporting this industry and that the members are keen to grow their businesses through events like this.
“It’s critical now we push on with the association and as we look forward, we have an incredible year of benefits for
our members to enjoy, which will include the highlight with the biannual Awards of Excellence in March 2023 at Optus Stadium.”
LIAWA is certainly on the move and with an increased interest in membership, sponsorship and a variety of industry organisations vying to be a part of LIAWA, there is a real sense LIAWA has enormous potential in growing into the peak body that it should be. Clearly having an internal accreditation program is the next big step and achieving this will take a great deal of effort and resources to properly put this in place, as well as getting approval from industry to participate.
