The joy of data A study released earlier this year found that supply chains were suffering from limited access to real-time freight data which inflated delivery delays. Woolworths, Nestle and Toll Group contributed to data sharing trials in a bid to improve the country’s supply chains. Applied research centre, iMOVE, along with the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics and GS1 Australia released their findings which is set to assist the Australian Government in setting up the National Freight Data Hub. The study comprised three components including two pilot trials involving Toll, Nestle, Woolworths and Infrabuild and a third pilot that dealt with data aggregation through GS1 Australia. Each of the trials sought to identify matching unique consignment information across partner supply chain management systems while verifying how this could be shared on different systems in real-time. Although the trials were cut short by Covid-19, the early findings revealed that real-time freight consignment data is not currently shared across the supply chain and supply chain operators noted this impacted their ability to respond to disruptions. The report concluded that the multiplicity of standards and systems in use across industry made it difficult for project participants to reconcile and match related consignment records across different systems.

Interestingly, the inability to link information across supply chain partners resulted in significant re-keying of the same information multiple times across the supply chain, increasing costs and reducing efficiency. An increase in digitalisation can reportedly assist improved visibility of freight consignments and interoperability between supply chain partners and reduce administrative burden for small operators. Why is this important? The Federal Government has committed, at the time of writing, $8.5 million to fund projects it considers enhances the collection of freight data across the nation as it settles the design of a National Freight Data Hub. iMove Director, Ian Christensen, said aggregating real operational data from the freight industry will achieve more informed decisions on new infrastructure and better freight policy. The Government – Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, and Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport, Scott Buccholz – agree that sharing real-time freight data will ensure freight is moving efficiently with fewer errors and delays.

aftermath of World War I, was a truly remarkable invention that more than one century on continues to lend itself admirably to a multitude of applications in road transport. Equally, though, the design has an inherent drawback due to the progressively heightened centre of gravity as it is being tipped. As such, uneven ground or a strong gust of wind perpendicular to it can, in a worst-case scenario, cause the trailer to finish up on its side. The chance of contacting overhead obstacles such as electricity cables when tipping in fields is another potential hazard which must be mitigated by vigilance on the part of the driver. It’s these reasons and more that prompted

unload products in the field. Several factors can cause tippers to become unstable when raised for tipping: A road surface that is not level; material that shifts or sticks in the front corners or generally does not unload evenly; and wind gusts. All of these factors can contribute to trailers toppling over sideways. According to KEITH, trailers with WALKING FLOOR® systems can be safely unloaded on uneven ground and in windy conditions. A further significant benefit is controlled material discharge which is not as easily achieved with tipper trailers. In addition, these trailers can unload adjacent to other equipment, which is not recommended for tipping trailers due to the increased risk of the trailer overturning. A particularly important safety benefit The latest 45’ bulk commodity trailer from Byrne.

The challenge facing fleet operators today is to maximise payload and drivetime without sacrificing safety or incurring costly overweight fines. Several competing factors play into the demand of maintaining safety and operational efficiencies: optimising load balance, utilising payload capacity, dealing with the costs, time losses and hassles that come with weigh bridge stops. The answer, of course, is Right Weigh’s onboard load scales – simple technology that gives fleet owners the tool necessary to feel confident about axle group weights and skip weigh bridge stops in favour of more time on route without the risk of overweight

KNORR-BREMSE RDC RAMP DOCKING CONTROL
SAFETY FIRST. EVERYTIME. WITH KNORR-BREMSE RDC BRAKING TECHNOLOGY. Reversing a trailer presents one of the greatest opportunities for accidents involving truck, trailer and other objects. Knorr-Bremse Ramp Docking Control (RDC) reduces these risks by detecting objects behind the trailer. When the distance between the rear of the trailer and a docking platform, for example, reduces to a predefined range, the trailer brakes will be activated through the Knorr-Bremse TEBS system to slow the movement to a complete stop and provide physical feedback to the driver. In addition, the system provides visual and audible warnings for the driver while reversing.

Asked about the greatest changes he’s seen over the last 40 years, Graham mentions much tighter and more prolific regulations and Performance-Based Standards (PBS). “The over-involvement of regulations and the paperwork this creates has made the job of building trailers much more complex,” he says. “Long gone are the days when you could simply take an order from someone over the phone and then build it.” As for who or what he admires in the industry, Graham says he’s always looked up to Haulmark Trailers as a solid privately-
