Locally made components and machinery are forecast to see a boost following the Federal Government’s $1.5 billion investment into the Modern Manufacturing Strategy. Such a vision aims to realise a high quality and sustainable manufacturing nation that helps to deliver a strong, modern and resilient economy. To achieve this, the Government has outlined its four-pillar action plan: getting the economic conditions right for business, making science and technology work for industry, focusing on areas of advantage and building national resilience for a strong economy. It does sound promising. Can it deliver? Saeid Nikdel, an expert in quality management, said restrictions enforced across the world have resulted in a lack of availability and delivery delays due to parts and componentry held up in international supply chains. This lag has affected Australia’s access to goods and highlights Australia’s dependence on overseas markets for the supply of machinery, tools, parts and product components. The Government’s Strategy, albeit timely, would appear to be addressing a major vulnerability in our domestic manufacturing endeavours. Interestingly, market research firms have projected that the component supply chain in the US is impacting trailer productivity throughout the country. A report from ACT Research, published in March, revealed that US trailer net

orders pushed the industry backlog higher for the past seven months with January’s order level 66 per cent above current builds. The challenge to increase production in this context is constrained by access to parts needed for structural composition of new trailers and those used in the undercarriage assembly builds. Are we seeing similar constraints impede the progress of Australia’s leading trailer manufacturers and industry suppliers? On the surface, it would appear not to be the case. In this edition of Trailer, see the latest innovations in Australia’s modern road tankers. We have on display the finest examples of road transport equipment that are either Australian made and/or tailored for rigorous heavy duty application down under. Numerous manufacturers, according to Nikdel, have struggled to upscale operations to meet the increase in demand which he contends is a wakeup call for Australian manufacturers who realise they must strengthen supply chains. Well, that Strategy sounds rather convenient. As for Australia’s national manufacturing priorities, resources technology and critical minerals processing tops the list. Nikdel is optimistic the Strategy will improve its target markets. For the spend and Federal commitment, I hope so, too.

the credentials of those responsible for the integrity and safety of Australia’s chilled and frozen food supply went live last month. The program, the Cold Chain Professional Development Series, is in response to cold chain losses from temperature abuse which have been identified by recent national studies sponsored by the Commonwealth Government. The Australian Food Cold Chain Council (AFCCC), with input and the support of kindred organisations with stakes in the cold chain, has taken the lead by producing the first of five Cold Food Codes, and following this with the first online training program of its kind for those who work at the many levels in

First tranche of $100M road safety package rolls out in SA The Government of South Australia has announced 15 new road safety projects worth more than $100 million are due to commence soon. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, said tranche one works would start imminently and be completed by June to improve safety and support jobs as soon as possible. “This funding is part of our national $2 billion Road Safety Program and will deliver much-needed lifesaving upgrades including shoulder sealing, rumble strips, works to prevent head-on collisions and barriers to prevent run-off-road crashes,” said McCormack. “The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government will always do everything we can to ensure all South Australians make it home sooner and safer at the end of every road trip, no matter where they live.” Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, said getting funding flowing and shovels in the dirt on road safety upgrades

REDARC is set for smart factory upgrade Adelaide-based electronics manufacturer, REDARC, will continue its modernisation journey through investment in Industry 4.0 technology and training. This will be facilitated by support from the Federal Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC). Building upon the company’s recent expansion, the co-funding investment of over $800,000 will extend REDARC’s smart factory and skill capabilities across both in-house and supplier operations, and create up to 35 new roles. “We need to have a nimble, agile and

Women commercial drivers recognised with WiTA Awards Women in Trucking Australia (WiTA) has held its inaugural International Women’s Day Awards in celebration of the many talented Australian women truck drivers. In February, 21 female truckies from across the country each received multiple nominations across two award categories: Driver of the Year and Trailblazer Driver of the Year – the latter recognising women who’ve hung up their truck keys for the last time. The nominees came from varied backgrounds, with 20th-century veterans at one end of the spectrum to young women with four- or five-years’ experience at the other.

Hottest custom build LAYANDA TRANSPORT CARTS BITUMEN TO REMOTE LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND CHOSE ITS LATEST TIEMAN BITUMEN TANKER FOR ITS PROVEN HEAT RETENTION, BEST IN INDUSTRY PAYLOAD DESIGN AND AUSTRALIAN BUILT QUALITY FINISH. In 2001 Tieman launched its first stainless steel bitumen tanker – an industry first innovation. Twenty years later the non-corrosive stainless steel design has proven the Tieman investment reduces long term maintenance and operational costs through its superior heat retention. This saves gas or diesel costs and minimises demurrage expenses as less heating hours are required. Add in the extra payload every load due to the tanker’s lighter tare weight and the return on the Tieman investment is compelling. Layne and Amanda Moulds, owners of Layanda Transport based in New South Wales and Victoria, take pride in their Tieman tanker looking its best. The driver is out of the cab to couple air lines and electrical cables so the ELI-te™ system helps with positive reinforcement of the required coupling procedure and eliminates the potential for a driver to miss the signal of modern dash mounted systems. But there is output signals available from ELI-te™ for those that prefer the convenience of internally mounted alters. In support of Aurora’s partnership with Uber, Uber is investing $400 million USD in Aurora and Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, is joining Aurora’s Board. “Few technologies hold as much promise to improve people’s lives with safe, accessible, and environmentally friendly transportation as self-driving vehicles,” said Khosrowshahi. “For the last five years, our phenomenal team at ATG has been at the forefront of this effort—and in joining forces with Aurora, they are now in pole position to deliver on that promise even faster. “I’m looking forward to working with Chris, and to bringing the Aurora Driver to the Uber network in the years ahead,” he said. Lux Research analyst, Lewie Roberts, said this move is truly disruptive. Self-driving tech is gaining ground in the US.
