Australian businesses reported the best operating conditions on record ahead of the end of the JobKeeper program in March. These results were reported in National Australia Bank’s (NAB) Monthly Business Survey for March 2021. The business conditions index reportedly increased from 8.0 points to 25 points – a new high for the survey – with profitability, employment and trading condition measurements reaching all-time highs. The past year, however, has resulted in a confidence dip to 15 points – three points down. NAB Chief Economist, Alan Oster, described it overall as a “very solid survey result” while noting that confidence remained “well above its long-run average” despite the survey revealing a dip. “A very strong read for forward orders points to ongoing strength in activity, which hopefully sees conditions remain elevated, even as we pass through the end of the JobKeeper program,” he added. Up to 150,000 jobs may have been lost as the JobKeeper came to an end, as estimated by Treasury. The NAB survey results reflect that businesses’ employment intentions remained well above average, suggesting that employment growth
will balance out the job losses. “Businesses are telling us activity continues to increase at a very healthy rate as we move past the rebound phase in activity,” said Oster. “Overall, the recovery over the last year has been much more rapid than anyone could have forecast.” Mining was the only industry to show a lift in confidence according to the NAB survey. By state, sentiment improved in Victoria and Western Australia, but eased elsewhere. Industries to record the largest gains in operating conditions for March were manufacturing and construction. Overall, conditions ranked highest in the retail, finance, business and property services, and wholesale sectors. So, how is our industry looking? Well, based on what we have to showcase in our Brisbane Truck Show edition I would say the rebound is strong. As essential service providers persevere amid pandemic, suppliers have doubled down on new opportunities while others have reinforced their loyalties.

2021 using ARRB’s ALF.
The project aims to quantify pavement wear for a select range of tyres including the New Generation Wide Base Single (NGWBS) with dimensions of 445/50R22.5. Current heavy vehicle regulations decree that axle weights on vehicles fitted with super singles are significantly lower than those fitted with comparable dual wheel sets. According to the TIC, test results will provide the scientific evidence required to develop a case for increasing the mass limits for heavy truck and trailer axles fitted with wide base single tyres, thus bringing them in line with current limits for narrower dual tyre sets. TIC CEO Tony McMullan said the project would study pavement wear for NGWBS tyres compared to the industry standard dual 11R22.5 tyre installations at the same loads. “The tyre and pavement testing will be undertaken by the ARRB, with the support of tyre suppliers Michelin and Goodyear,” said McMullan. “According to safety studies from New Zealand, the adoption of NGWBS tyres resulted in a reduction in the relative crash risk from rollovers by up to 17 per cent, so the potential safety advantages for Australia are significant.” McMullan contended that the operational benefits of wide base single tyres are wellknown: fuel savings, increased payloads, wider footprint and greater stability. “These benefits are being realised in Europe but not in Australia, as we continue to use old tyre technology that’s been unchanged for over 20 years,” said McMullan. ARRB will use a test rig known as the Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) to quantify

A challenge those in this room rise to meet every single day and particularly during the pandemic,” said Buchholz. “From the Commonwealths perspective, this $245 million additional investment in Victorian roads includes $183 million of funding from the Morrison Government.” Buchholz said the pandemic had placed great pressures on the industry and the Morrison Government was helping businesses bounce back from Covid through business-friendly taxation measures. “The supercharged Instant Asset Write Off, Temporary Full Expensing and Loss Carry www.trailermag.com.au

over conventional B-double combinations. Being within 26m overall length means the combination can travel at 100km/h which on long distances assists in managing return to base driver fatigue hours. Tieman have engineered its unique drawbar to incorporate a skid plate and kingpin which is connected to a rear of tanker mounted greaseless turntable in lieu of the conventional tow eye connected to Ringfeder. Roads in regional NSW can be very undulating and the varying road surface cambers around sweeping bends can test the very best of drivers at speed. Any tanker rollover can be catastrophic, so minimising risk for drivers is why Paul has chosen the Tieman proprietary design. “Driver feedback saying they handle and track like a B-double gives great peace of mind to me as a business owner, knowing we have given our drivers the absolute safest tanker equipment to operate,” Paul says. Another new Tieman PBS configuration for Inland is a 36.5m PBS 20m B-double and seven-axle dog trailer. The 20m PBS B-double operates from Sydney fuel terminals over the Blue Mountains to the company’s Dubbo depot where it then connects to the seven-axle dog trailer and delivers game changing volumes of approximately 94,000 litres of diesel to

Bringing Peter’s Tuff trailer tally to 18 – with the first one having joined the fleet over 20 years ago – the latest unit is a no holds barred version that ups the ante considerably compared with previous units he’s bought. Similarly impressive was the operation of the MacPherson Strut-style independent hydraulic suspension that Trailer Magazine was able to witness firsthand via GoPro footage. On its maiden voyage the video footage showed how each axle unit soaks up minor road variations with very little movement transferred to the trailer frame. In fact, the components looked and behaved in a remarkably similar fashion to those of the front suspension and steering on a modern car. Field trials are in progress and production serialisation is expected Q4 2021. There are a number of advantages for fleets to invest in these technologies. Reduced cost, maximised tyre life, optimized safety – to name a few. Starting July 2022, these systems will be mandatory for all new vehicles in Europe. In Australia we still have the option of adopting new technology. However, tyre pressure monitoring and controlling is becoming more and more accepted by fleets and operators, as well as in PBS applications. Whatever the future brings, SAF-Holland will be there. This unit also has a three-metre clip without axles that attaches to the rear, increasing the deck length from 18.6m to 21.6m to accommodate longer loads. Steve says the wide range of Drake trailers the company now operates gives flexibility and diversity to the operation – in effect, covering all bases. “In WA we can carry 75 tonnes on a 3x8 and 100 tonnes on a 4x8 which pretty much covers most of the loads we carry,” Steve says. “The 3x8 is good for our smaller machinery and is useful to us because we do a lot of work in suburbia where manoeuvrability is paramount.

This is what Tru-Shu prevents. Excessive heat buildup causes the drum to become conical shaped. This causes tapered lining wear and forces the shoes out of the drum.
Fast Fact The owner of ASET Engineering, Ken Pitt, was frustrated by the premature replacement and misalignment of brake shoes – a common cause of fleet downtime – so he worked on his Tru-Shu solution which tackles the issue head-on. As the replacement of an axle set along with brake parts can cost thousands, Tru-Shu is helping keep trucks on the move, saving operators time and money.
to reduce the industry’s dependence on imported axles and also create an opportunity to export superior Australianmade axles. “With this project it will take time for us to find partners as well as gain support from Austrade or similar government departments,” he says. It’s versatile and durable enough to handle all climates and working environments whether it’s hot, humid, wet, dry, or freezing – and it will eventually protect the integrity of the entire application.”

In addition to minimising the risk of rollover, thereby increasing safety for heavy vehicle operators, the liner does a great job of protecting the tipper tray surface from wear and product abrasion. “The liner will prevent wear to the floor where it is covered,” Peter says. “There will always be a section of the floor exposed at the rear of the trailer to allow for the expansion and contraction of the QuickSilver product.” As the liner material is a proprietary industrial grade self-lubricating plastic, Peter says it is generally a better option than QuickSilver’s seamless, smooth surface helps to ensure a smooth unloading process for tipper applications by eliminating catch points.
