The broader context Construction grows amid supply and pressure issues according to Ai Group, a North Sydney based national employer organisation which is purported to represent traditional, innovative and emerging industry sectors. Ai Group Chief Policy Advisor, Peter Burn, said Australia’s construction sector continued a run of expansion in March with activity, employment and new orders all gaining further ground. He mentioned commercial construction was the most rapidly expanding sector and it was supported by gains in engineering construction. Interestingly, input price pressures, including freight costs, remained very high, he said, adding that managing the supply of inputs continues to present major hurdles. Staff retention among builders and constructors, specifically attracting and retaining skilled staff, also remains an issue. Ultimately, Burn is optimistic that current activity levels will continue in the months to follow although the capacity to lift activity in the face of supply pressures is becoming increasingly challenging. Similarly, supply chain and labour issues are said to be constraining manufacturing expansion. Innes Willox, Ai Group CEO, points to March data which shows new staff, a lift in sales and continued expansion in production albeit at a slower pace a month prior. He explained five of the six manufacturing sectors saw improved performance with businesses in machinery & equipment, building products and the diverse textiles, clothing, footwear, paper & printing group leading the way.
Willox described Food & beverages – the largest area of Australian manufacturing – to be alone in seeing conditions deteriorate in March. Manufacturing pressures have intensified in terms of wages and input prices, while selling prices growth, according to Willox, saw manufacturers recover some cost increases in the market. Manufacturers, based on this consensus, will be stretched to fulfil orders. Meanwhile, mid-April, business groups in New South Wales, have been calling for Covid-19 isolation rules to ease. This follows a seven-day isolation requirement for household contacts of people with Covid-19. Business NSW and the Victorian Chamber of Commerce claim these restrictions are creating staff shortages. Businesses, according to Business NSW CEO, Daniel Hunter, need more support from government so that they can continue to cater to their customers. He contends that businesses also need certainty and that exemptions to these isolation rules are unfair and may be disadvantaging other businesses ineligible to it. It’s clear that government can do more to lead economic recovery. A solution in this instance, supported by Hunter, would be to allow close contacts to continue working and undergo daily rapid antigen tests. Regardless of these ongoing challenges, our industry continues to persevere and deliver under incredibly trying circumstances.

NSW hydrogen hubs receive enough funding to power 26,000 trucks More than $4 billion in potential investment has been proposed in response to a recent call for expressions of interest for the the Hunter and Illawarra Hydrogen Hubs. The NSW Government expects the hydrogen hubs to be pivotal in helping the state scale up the emerging green hydrogen industry by working with industry to support innovation and minimise the cost of infrastructure. It had originally committed $70 million to accelerate the development of Hydrogen Hubs in New South Wales, starting with the Hunter and Illawarra. Acting Premier Paul Toole said this huge commercial interest shows how much the regions are set to benefit with renewable energy and new low carbon technologies. “Hydrogen Hubs will provide huge economic benefits for the Hunter and Illawarra, helping to secure jobs of the future,” he said. “It also represents a huge export potential for our state, with the international market for green hydrogen expected to meet 24 per cent of the global energy demand by 2050, estimated to be worth $900 billion,” said Toole. Treasurer and Energy Minister Matt Kean said the overwhelming response includes private

Westport with Anketell-Thomas Road concept progresses Preliminary plans for the Anketell-Thomas Road Freight Corridor were released earlier this week according to the Government of Western Australia. The early concept design shows how the future container terminal in Kwinana’s Outer Harbour will connect with Tonkin Highway, providing an efficient Western Australian freight and supply chain network. The concept includes four traffic lanes and grade-separations at key intersections to provide uninterrupted movement for freight vehicles, and better safety for drivers. While the final concept is subject to further planning and consultation, the road corridor has been identified and a Planning Control Area (PCA) will be put in place to ensure proposed developments in the area support the future road freight corridor. Under a PCA, any proposed developments will be referred to the WA Planning Commission for approval to consider how it interacts with the future freight corridor. All landowners who may be affected by the proposed PCAs will be personally contacted

Jobs The Government is investing in measures to expand and upskill the workforce to secure the workers we need now and for the future. It is transforming Australia’s manufacturing sector and building resilient supply chains with over $1 billion in new investment, building on the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy announced in the 2020-21 Budget. It has also committed $2.8 billion to support Australian apprenticeships, building on the $13.3 billion spent on apprenticeships and traineeships since 2013. The Government has committed $3.7 billion in Commonwealth funding for a new skills agreement, which has the capacity to deliver up to 800,000 additional training places for Australians. To develop the next generation of innovative Australian companies, this Budget includes $2.2 billion for a research commercialisation action plan (including $1.6 billion for a new economic accelerator) to bring industries and universities together. Backing small businesses Small businesses will have access to a new 20 per cent bonus deduction for eligible external training courses for upskilling employees. The Skills and Training Boost will apply to expenditure incurred from Budget night until 30 June 2024, providing $550 million in tax relief. The Government is also providing $1 billion for a new Technology Investment Boost to encourage small businesses to go digital. Small businesses will be able to deduct a bonus 20 per cent of the cost of expenses and depreciating assets that support digital uptake. Expenditure of up to $100,000 per year will be supported by this new measure, which applies from Budget night until 30 June 2023.

“The quality’s excellent,” Bobby says. “They’re built to last longer, and mainly the high quality finish as well. What we require, they’ve never had an issue to change things around. When it comes to trailer builders, some builders don’t like to implement changes in the design.” Bobby speaks very highly of Vawdrey team. He also prefers trailers that are built to last rather than cutting corners and making them lighter at the expense of long-term durability. “We aim to get at least 10-12 years of service at a minimum from our trailers.” Ausway also expect a long service life from the running gear fitted to their trailers. “Over the years we’ve used a number of different axles and we came to the conclusion that BPW Transpec axles and suspension are the most suitable for our operation,” he says. “We have standardised on BPW axles with D36 airbags on all our trailers. since 2002. Its Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) features a handinstallable design and is ideal for frequent braking applications. It also has a high heat tolerance, is compatible with synthetic lubricants, and has excellent exclusion properties, even in harsh conditions. The Scotseal Plus XL offers maximum sealing life under virtually any and all driving conditions, including frequent braking applications and heat generating environments. It is the standard seal in preassembled hubs, and is preferred by many OE truck and trailer manufacturers due to its proven history of high performance. The advanced HNBR material provides heat resistance up to 149 degrees Celsius as well as broad compatibility with synthetic lubrication fluids. Its unique design provides fresh running surface for sealing lips and keeps out road contaminations for better protection. Its ‘fat footprint’ with adhesive type properties locks onto the spindle, making a perfect seal even on a worn spindle. Similar to Scotseal Longlife, the Plus XL seals in and out with four sealing lips, including the spring-loaded primary sealing lip with its Waveseal design that sweeps oil back to the bearings. Plus XL is easily installed without the need for special tools, which eliminates costly do-overs and extending wheel end life. Scotseal’s Plus XL seals are designed by highly trained wheel end SKF engineers. Elastomeric formulation along with the high tolerances, finishes and manufacturing quality controls put together with the design features produce a seal that cannot be duplicated. With extended life capabilities, the most recent product, SKF Scotseal X-Treme, brings improved reliability and extended service life under the harshest operating conditions for the vehicle service market, as well as OE truck and trailer manufacturers. Retardation comparisons
Retardation Force
Retardation is the force measured in pounds per square inch applied by the brake, divided by the Gross Axle Weight Rating. A greater ratio implies greater friction generated at the brake drum. Both TRP linings comfortably exceed the FMVSS standard and the 23k lining offers more braking at higher pressures; both compounds are satisfyingly linear – there’s more braking available with more pressure, with no sudden dips or spikes in bite.
More force is better: Retardation ratio represents the force (PSI) applied by the brake divided by the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). A greater ratio implies greater brake force.
Fade Performance Fade is tested in 10 abrupt stops from a consistent speed of 60mph (100km/h); to achieve the benchmark, trucks and trailers must stop in less than 250 feet (80 metres) when loaded to their GAWR and 235 feet (72m) when lightly loaded, and not demand more than the 100psi minimum rating of pneumatic brake systems. As linings get hotter, more brake pressure is required to produce the required stopping power. It is clear the 23k linings required only 40psi to complete the abrupt 10 stops with remarkable consistency, which will be very reassuring to drivers. The 21k linings did require more brake air pressure to achieve the consecutive stops, exactly as might be expected from a lining intended for highway use.
Recovery
Fade performance
Less is best: Simulates 10 continuous, abrupt decelerations. Lower air pressures indicate less brake force is required to perform the abrupt stop.
Recovery performance
Linked to Fade performance is the rate at which linings recover from heat application by abrupt repeated braking over a further 10 stops. As can be seen, the 23k remained consistent, while the 21k linings recovered quickly and required less air-pressure to pull the test rig to a halt.
Less is best: Simulates how fast the lining material recovers after the Fade test and measures how well the brakes cope with conditions that could result in brake fade.
Weight Loss
Lining weight loss in grams
Effectively a measure of wear, this graph clearly shows the 21k TRP linings wear up to 30 percent less than OEM linings.
