Industry groups including the National Road Transport Association have welcomed the release of research that shows a reduction in crashes involving trucks in 2020. Research funded by National Transport Insurance and conducted by National Transport Accident Research Centre found that despite NTI’s portfolio increasing by 11.4 per cent in 2020 compared with 2019, there were only four more incidents reported in 2020. Of note, just shy of 80 per cent of fatal incidents involving a car and truck found the automotive driver to be at fault – groundbreaking results that dispel factually inaccurate myths about the danger that trucks pose to other road users and the wider community. With so much emphasis on heavy vehicle road safety, the same intense focus must also apply to drivers of light vehicles. NatRoad CEO, Warren Clark, agrees that Australia needs to embrace a better on-road culture “where light vehicle drivers are more aware of the requirements to drive safely around heavy vehicles”. He goes on to say that this could be addressed through Government-run public awareness campaigns and driver education programs. Meanwhile, data driven technology, according to National Heavy Vehicle

Regulator (NHVR) CEO, Sal Petroccitto, is the new frontier that will make Australian roads safer, citing fatigue detection and safety programs aimed at reminding light vehicle drivers about the importance of driving safely around trucks on the road. It’s important to reflect on the Regulator’s efforts in educating community and industry about the advantages of Performance-Based Standards and fleets investing in the latest road transport technologies. Sure, there are generally fuel efficiency gains and greater profitability to be had with running high productivity vehicles but there’s also the community aspect – a key focus of the NHVR’s stakeholder relations team. A recent push for an improved High Productivity Freight Vehicle (HPFV) network by the Victorian Government is expected to save farmers, freight operators and businesses time and money and further encourage freight operators to invest in newer, safer and cleaner vehicles. Around 3,000 kilometres of road have been added to the pre-approved HPFV network, reducing costs and saving farmers and businesses time by eliminating the need for individual route assessments.

Linfox delivers art in support of Royal Children’s Hospital Transport and logistics company, Linfox, has transported more than 50 UooUoo sculptures to their ‘forever homes’. “To mark the 150th anniversary of The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne, the RCH Foundation spread colour in Melbourne and Geelong with a public art trail of UooUoo (pronounced youyou), painted by Victorian artists,” Linfox said in a statement. “The UooUoo were recently auctioned and Linfox coordinated the delivery to their new homes.” Launching in January, Me and UooUoo featured a specially designed sculpture created by Alexander Knox and was brought to life by 100 local, emerging and Indigenous artists. “These strange, colourful creatures popped up around Melbourne and Geelong, and quickly found their way into the hearts of Victorians and those visiting the state,” the event organiser said in a statement. “Throughout January to April, our wonderful community explored the trail, with over 11,000 users downloading the app, 226,000 sculptures unlocked and 12,500 photos shared along the way. “The trail ended with a fantastic Farewell Event at MCEC where we welcomed over 3,000 people for a final wave goodbye. Our UooUoos then went under the hammer for our fundraising auction. Congratulations to all the successful bidders, our UooUoos can’t wait to call their new habitats home. Service par excellence LEADING COMPONENT MANUFACTURER JOST AUSTRALIA RECENTLY COMPLETED A LARGE ORDER, SUPPLYING JSK37C FIFTH WHEELS WITH SENSOR COUPLING TECHNOLOGY FOR A FLEET OF 50 NEW MERCEDESBENZ PRIME MOVERS FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FIRM GOLDSTAR TRANSPORT. As the component connecting the prime mover and trailer, the fifth wheel plays a pivotal role in the success of all companies using semi-trailers or multi-combinations. Furthermore, correct coupling and uncoupling procedures and technology that warns drivers if there is a problem with said procedures are paramount to the safe and efficient operation of every articulated fleet. For Goldstar, all boxes are ticked in these respects by the JOST products installed on its latest acquisition – 50 Mercedes-Benz 2646 prime movers used for supermarket distribution work in greater Perth. “The service JOST provides is a key reason why we chose the company to supply all the fifth wheels for our new prime movers,” says Sean Carren, Managing Director at Goldstar Transport. He describes the level of service provided by Nathan Dack, JOST Australia Area Manager, along with the rest of the JOST team in Perth, as second to none.

Industry leader: Sally Tipping TRAILER MAGAZINE SAT DOWN WITH SALLY TIPPING, A DIRECTOR OF FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS TIPPING’S TRANSPORT AT DUBBO. HAVING MARRIED INTO TRUCKING 31 YEARS AGO, SALLY HAS DEVELOPED A STRONG FERVOUR FOR THE INDUSTRY AND THE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN IT. What first drew you to the commercial road transport industry? In 1990, at 24 years of age, I married into a trucking family. My family, who are all tertiary educated, were quite surprised, to say the least. At the time, my husband was running a small operation with his parents. I discovered the operation was on the verge of bankruptcy and desperately needed structure and a business plan to be viable. Instead of starting a business with a clean slate, I started with a small stream of income and an enormous amount of debt. What does a standard day for you look like? Being a small operation, I wear multiple hats at any given time – there is no start time and no finish time. It is now used by the original purchaser’s son – still going strong after 35 years of hard use.” Mike describes how long-term success for BRE came after the company diversified and started producing trailers for the broader transport industry rather than just the agricultural sector. “Agriculture typically has large peaks and troughs and when the farmers have money they want equipment now, while in the tough times they don’t want anything,” he says. “We started building side tippers for the mining industry in 2006 and this gave us the consistency we needed to maintain a stable workforce.” Mike adds that the functionality and durability of these early units has led to the Mike Verhoogt.
