Renewed confidence An inaugural survey conducted in late April by the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) and the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA) suggested the transport, waste and recycling sectors were reasonably upbeat about the prospects of recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. The VTA and VWMA represent hundreds of Victorian and national freight, logistics and waste management companies, actively engages with their sectors. As part of this, focussed interviews are being regularly held with members to establish and update baseline information about the effects of Covid-19 in terms of customer retention, relations and revenue, human resources, future investment intentions and trade expectations. To gain an updated perspective on industry sentiments, participating members were interviewed again, with responses showing the industry remained upbeat about the prospects for recovery. Among the key findings of the latest survey: 60 per cent of respondents expect international trade to increase over the next four months, an increase of 15 per cent from the last survey; just three in 10 (30 per cent) of members expect their staffing levels to

6

decrease over the next three months, a small improvement from the last survey (32 per cent); 25 per cent reported a decline in customers since the first survey (23 per cent); and about 80 per cent of members surveyed said they intended to invest in new capital equipment before the end of the year, a 16 per cent improvement on the first survey (64 per cent). VTA and VWMA CEO, Peter Anderson, said the transport industry should be encouraged by the general improvement in optimism expressed by respondents, particularly the willingness by operators to invest in their people and their businesses despite some of the economic headwinds caused by coronavirus. For Anderson, actions speak louder than words with operators prepared to purchase new capital equipment based on recent respondent feedback. With the extension of the instant asset write-off scheme until the end of this calendar year, along with the economic support of JobKeeper, operators are better prepared to invest in their businesses, demonstrating a renewal in business confidence in the sector.

Transport operators respond to VTA bushfire container calls Over 20 shipping containers are set to be transported to Gippsland and the state’s north east this weekend as part of an industry initiative, led by the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), to support families that lost their homes during the past summer’s devastating bushfires. In May, the VTA announced it was leading an initiative with stevedore Victoria International Container Terminal and Bushfire Recovery Victoria to provide containers so that those Victorians having to rebuild could store materials safely and securely on-site. VTA CEO, Peter Anderson, said the Association was overwhelmed by offers from members and transport companies to provide drivers, prime-movers and sideloaders to deliver the containers. “Thanks to the generosity of many of our members, we have been able to arrange for well over 20 shipping containers to be delivered as far away as Mallacoota in the far east of the state so that families that are in the process of rebuilding can store material safely on-site,” he said. “Their provision of equipment, labour and fuel to transport these containers represents a significant investment of time and resources and we appreciate the immense show of support from these operators for their fellow Victorians. “We also appreciate the generosity of VICT who donated the containers, as well as Bushfire Recovery Victoria who helped

In October 2018, REDARC’s upgraded facility officially opened with an additional 3,000-square-metres of advanced manufacturing and testing space. “A credit to REDARC’s success, and future success is our focus on innovation, building a team-based culture and our willingness to embrace risk,” Anthony says. A peek behind the curtain reveals the breadth of REDARC’s $22m expansion investment to meet increasing demand and expand the inhouse testing capabilities. The technology that produces printed circuit boards changes rapidly. REDARC’s new Surface Mount Technology (SMT) line is specified so highly that it is one of few in the world, placing components twice as fast as their older model, and allowing the company to ramp up production by 250 per cent. Mostly within 60km of the Port, but most of these trailers will be executing our Zone strategy which is to be within 15km of the customer for the final mile of delivery.” Arthur expects volumes to grow by 20-30 per cent during the AugustDecember peak period annually. “ACFS is a company owned fleet, and we rarely use subcontractors to manage our volume levels, which requires us as a business to carefully plan our ongoing requirements,” he says. “We have learnt as a business over the years to carry additional capacity for the unknown or when a new contract may arise. We are always ready and prepared for growth.” Earlier this year, ACFS acquired Kerry Logistics’ warehouse and transport business in Adelaide which strengthened the company’s presence in the container logistics supply chain. “While the Kerry acquisition is not large in scale for ACFS – as we move over 800,000 TEU of FCL containers on a per annum basis nationally, It is strategically important, as ACFS did not have a presence in Adelaide until we acquired the Patrick Port Logistics business in 2016,” Arthur says. “This business was mainly supported by subcontractors only and was very small in scale. In a few short years we have developed the Adelaide business, including the Kerry Logistics business of late which will now make us a top three carrier in Adelaide in regards to scale, but we have also managed to add 22,000-square-metres of warehousing, as well as an empty park (ACFS e-Depot), which allows us to provide end to end solutions for our customers, with our aligned shipping lines. “With the proliferation of PBS (PerformanceBased Standards) combinations allowing ever higher weights to be carried, the ballrace is subjected to tremendous forces day-in, day-out,” Bennett says. “Over the years we’ve established that to meet our high standards in terms of durability and reliability only the JOST range of ballraces suits our applications.” The JOST KLK series of double-row ballrace slew rings has a number of features which make it ideal in harsh and dusty environments such as quarries, including the labyrinth seal and the upper and lower rows of ball bearings that ensure vertical and horizontal forces are evenly distributed throughout the entire component. Thanks to the functional design, the axial loads are ideally supported and the thrust and tractive forces which occur when driving

women the opportunity to show how well we can do the work. What do female-driven events in commercial road transport mean to you? These events are doing a great job of promoting the role of women in the trucking industry. Particularly women who have been subjected to difficult situations like domestic violence. The events put on by organisations like Women in Trucking Australia give women the support they need to help them achieve their goals. How can people and companies in the transport industry better promote it as a career choice for women? They can promote this better by acknowledging and advertising the fact that women can handle the big equipment just as well as men. The size of the equipment doesn’t equate to either a male only or female only industry. Until Hernes gave me a go after I kept calling them every week, I found it really hard to get a job without having previous experience in a paid MC role. But I didn’t give up and my
