Supply chain resilience. It’s important, we’re told. Remember in March when the Evergreen Marine vessel, Ever Given, ran aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal while attempting to turn in the narrow channel? Well, it blocked an important shipping lane – a critical chokepoint for global oil trade and other commodities. Registered to Panama, the ship was travelling from China to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It was passing through the canal heading towards the Mediterranean when it got stuck. At the time, inbound and outbound traffic was indeed blocked, vessel tracking websites confirmed. In a matter of days, a salvage company, Boskalis, re-floated the Ever Given, enabling free passage through the canal. So, why is this relevant to Australia? Well, the situation had potential to constrain the container supply chain which isn’t great when the global freight industry is reeling from the ongoing Covid-19 impact. Delays in container trade would exacerbate supply issues for manufacturers already experiencing supply issues with parts and components needed to make headway on trailer manufacturing backlogs. Tony McMullan, CEO of the Truck Industry Council, said that even though global parts shortages were impacting Australian truck sales, economic policy incentives appeared to be helping to steer the
4
nation through a disruptive period. He added that the relationship between demand and supply is also becoming tight, referencing a shortage of electronic semi-conductors – the chips used in electronic control units which control engine, transmission, braking as well as heating and cooling systems in heavy vehicles. Tony says modern vehicles without these control modules simply will not operate. Earlier this year, at the 2021 Brisbane Truck Show, ARTSA Institute released a guide, which according to executive member, Dr Peter Hart, aims to reduce the risk of workshops fitting poor quality or inadequately rated safety-critical parts as well as providing an understanding of the different types of replacement parts available in the market. He is concerned that there are many types of replacement parts that have no requirements to meet a standard meaning the fitment of specific safety-critical parts could compromise the safety of truck drivers and other road users. ARTSA Institute’s important work here demonstrates a need for heavy vehicle owners, operators, workshops and even retailers and industry bodies to be mindful of the parts they invest in. It could save lives.

According to Peter Hammel, Managing Director at Hercules QLD, the company initially started using Delta hydraulic cylinders due to experiencing too many failures with the previous brand. “We had used other Delta products prior to that so when the previous cylinders that we were using kept failing we decided to swing over to Delta hydraulic cylinders and we have been using their full range of cylinders ever since,” says Peter. “I like the fact that the product is Australian made and that all stages are fully chromed where other competitors only have the top stage chromed. “Delta will build to any hoist specification

All are supported by global and local subject experts and are very knowledgeable.” Martin says Knorr-Bremse are very easy to work with. “Dealing with Knorr Bremse was made a lot easier by their quick understanding of the opportunity and realising the importance of having a solution available at the right time to meet the shift in regulations and TEA’s timing to launch a particular product in May this year,” he says. “At every step, KnorrBremse brought the right people into the meetings, people who were empowered to make decisions and they got to know our business well.” TEA caters for a niche market segment involving plant equipment and Knorr-Bremse offers a multi-volt solution for the fitment of ABS. “Light trailer builders are often specialist fabricators working in multiple end user industries, like construction, mining and customised engineering service,” Martin says. “They often don’t see themselves as a part of the road transport industry because it doesn’t define their business. So, when, in November 2019, the Australian ADR 38/05 came into effect for all new trailers over 4.5-tonne Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) to have ABS fitted, I was mindful that for many trailer builders this would create a lot of new problems. I sought to bring together a package of ADRcompliant trailer kits, incorporating axles, suspensions, brake systems with a multi-volt ABS, wheels and tyres. provide.” Martin says the biggest challenge the company faces is a lack of skilled tradespeople to build the trailers. He explains that 20 years ago there were around 27 people in the workshop whereas today there are just three. “We just can’t get the people to do the work – we struggle to get motor mechanics and we struggle to get body builders,” he says. “I’m 62 years old now and I’m still building the trailers because we can’t get the right people to employ.” While the world has altered a lot in the almost four decades since MWF started its enduring relationship with The WDS Group, the reliable supply of quality fasteners at a fair price remains unchanged. QuickSilver® Specialised UHMWPE Truck Lining System
Lucidity Australia produce entire kit designs for trailer builds thanks to its in-house engineering team. Lucidity typically manage electrical content, design, Bill of Materials (BoM), manufacture and supply for trailer manufacturers. The business has a vast selection of kits it can draw on at any time, standardising materials on a clear layout with drawings detailing BoM. This means that every trailer is wired the same way and repeatable for production which really helps get trailers through the electrical finishing area. Trailer electrical schematic drawings assist the finishing team to ensure correct fitment, too, whereas the layout drawing is also a permanent record of electrical materials fitted to a trailer. In the future, should there need to be any troubleshooting needed, additional materials or parts needing replacement, the process of part identification is straight

forward. “We can really tailor the Lucidity range to our custom-built trailers,” Jason says. “Lucidity is extremely proactive in overcoming manufacturing and industry challenges. Design scope always takes into account the latest Australian Design Rules (ADR) requirements. Lucidity designs systems to operate at 12-, 24- and reduced (chopped) 24volt supplies so there are no concerns over truck and trailer electrical compatibility. Lucidity has this well in-hand as it is a major headache in the industry. I don’t believe any other single supplier can account to this capability. This is one of the key aspects when dealing with Lucidity that electrical incompatibilities don’t exist. Everything works, lamps, beacons, steer locks, chargers, scale equipment and so on.” Plug and play is a solid solution for the most basic of skeletal trailers through to the most complex extendables and bread vans, Jason says. “The electrical kits really take into account trailer architecture,” he says. “PUMPA utilise the entire Lucidity range to maximise productivity, for ease of service as well as assurance of a reliable quality electrical installation.” Lucidity Link side markers have made a substantial time saving for PUMPA. “OMP junctions provide a robust serviceable connection, IDMs provide flexibility to adapt the kits, plus with the chargers and timer switch they have all the bases covered,” Jason says. PUMPA has been completing plug and play light packages with Freds Interstate Transport. “The plug and play system allows for lots of extra lights which our clients love, complete with chrome covers for a very unique and quality finish,” Jason says – adding that compliance to ADR is of vital importance for everyone. “Having a supplier like Lucidity who provide wiring, lighting, charging, switching, power regulation all in one convenient kit means we can trust in this being correct. The experience and knowledge Lucidity has in this space is always available for us to draw upon. Ultimately, Lucidity Australia are trailer people, they know and understand electrical systems and they respect the transport industry needs to get stuff done on time in full.”

Half a century and batting on VETERAN TRAILER BUILDER, GRAHAM LUSTY, IS CELEBRATING A MONUMENTAL MILESTONE – 50 YEARS IN THE TRAILER MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY THIS YEAR. Graham Lusty was born and raised at Nyah West on the Murray River in the northern reaches of the Mallee district of western Victoria. From an early age he developed an interest in mechanical things including cars, trucks, tractors and trailers. “I was drawn to machinery when my father taught me to weld and I built my first trailer 50 years ago in 1971,” Graham says. “Early on in my career, I would fly a light aircraft to my rural customers’ farms to complete servicing and repairs on their trailers.” Since then, Graham has started a range of trailer manufacturing companies including G&J Lusty, Lusty Allison and Lusty EMS, before establishing Graham Lusty Trailers (GLT) in Brisbane in 2009. Over the years, Graham has also spent time passing down his knowledge and passion for trailers to others – with several generations of apprentices now part of the GLT family.
