The show must go on The Australian Freight Industry Awards, since 1989, has recognised the achievements of the country’s top freight operators as well as individuals of note who have made an enormous contribution to the industry. For former Victorian Transport Association (VTA) Executive Director Phil Lovel, he recalled at last year’s 30th gala event that the team behind the awards aimed to lift the profile and professionalism of the transport industry and emphasised that there is no other industry function like it. Quite right, too. This year’s AFIA, on 20 September, will once again recognise operators and individuals of note across a range of categories including ‘Female Leadership’, ‘Investment in People’ and ‘Best Practice Safety’. While many events this year have been cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19, the Executive Council and Secretariat of the VTA determined that the outstanding work of its members to keep supply chains moving and the economy strong must be recognised. To maintain continuity with presenting these industry accolades, and for the first time in AFIA history, this year’s ceremony will be livestreamed in a virtual format. As many businesses Australia-

wide action working-from-home processes, hosting meetings online and networking between screens, will these virtual encounters become the new normal? Earlier this year, bankers in Hong Kong, for example, learnt how to win stock offerings via video chat while wealth management executives at a Swiss firm realised trips to see clients were not as crucial as they originally thought. Equipment specialists both locally and abroad have leveraged available technologies to improve the way they conduct remote product training and troubleshooting. Talking to people online has its perks. Indeed, the coronavirus outbreak has seen creative business ideas emerge, streamlining how we communicate and changing the way we work, but how much of this will linger long after the virus has been dealt with? An investment banking boffin reckons there will be a change, no question, but thinks we will end up somewhere in the middle. In the meantime, the transport industry will remain front and centre of all things essential.

PUMPA lifts safety for pole carrying operation Swan Hill-based specialty trailer builder, PUMPA Manufacturing, has delivered a purpose-built solution for a pole carrying operation in northeastern Victoria. Jamesy’s Transport, based at Benalla, carries loads of pine poles that are strapped into bundles and transported on the specially designed PUMPA flat-top trailer which features removable bolsters designed to contain the poles in the event of bundle strapping failure. The trailer also features pneumatic selftensioning load binders that continually selfadjust during transit to ensure the correct tension is maintained as the load settles.

PUMPA’s latest trailer build has innovative load restraint features.

Coles Winter Appeal supports vital food relief efforts Supermarket company, Coles, has raised more than $1 million as part of its Winter Appeal for food rescue charity, SecondBite. The funds, which were raised in just over two weeks, will enable around five million meals to be provided to vulnerable Australians. The Winter Appeal, according to Coles, was launched amid new research conducted by SecondBite that revealed nine out of 10 of its food relief charity partners surveyed across Australia had been impacted by Covid-19 and more than 80 per cent had witnessed an increase in demand for food relief.

“We have however also implemented strategies to reduce our movements further. For vehicles that are going into service in New South Wales, or other states outside of Victoria, for example, we will conduct those services in those states, rather than before they leave Victoria.” The supply chain or goods and services to the transport sector, according to Smedley, is very complicated and intertwined. “Shutting down one aspect that might seem unrelated to transport can grind the whole system to a halt. This therefore requires some very careful consideration,” he said – emphasising it is a stressful time as a small business owner. “We are as busy as we have ever been, so it would make it very hard to deliver the volume of work we have on if we are shut down.” The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has reassured the community the transport industry is open for business to support Victorians over the weeks ahead. “Victoria is in crisis, and as we enter a period of unprecedented restrictions on our personal freedoms and our ability to work, it is essential that we come together to understand the challenges we face, and work in unison to stop the spread of coronavirus and the havoc it is wreaking across our state,” said VTA CEO, Peter Anderson. “The transport and logistics industries will continue to be able to operate over the coming period in order to support the distribution of essential goods, and to support those businesses that are permitted to operate with their supply chain requirements.” Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, has outlined additional restrictions around work which is expected to have long lasting effects on the state and national economy. “In formulating the new arrangements, the government has recognised the vital role of our industry so that state and national supply chain disruptions are minimised, and Victorians have uninterrupted access to fresh food, groceries, medicine and petrol,” said Anderson. Andrews, according to Anderson, was right to emphasise the complexity of the national supply chain and that Melbourne has the biggest container port in Australia that must remain operational to facilitate national and international trade. Many transport operators will experience a significant downturn, Anderson said, notwithstanding the industry’s ability to work. “Clearly operators that service businesses that have been required to close or reduce their total output will be impacted to varying levels,” said Anderson. “The VTA is a tremendous resource during unprecedented times like this and is open and available to assist members and the industry during these challenging times.” Since coronavirus took hold in February, the transport industry has shown leadership and adapted its systems and processes to be able to safely and efficiently service the needs of customers and consumers and keep supply chains moving. “As we prepare for further restrictions to their lives and livelihoods, let’s all heed the advice of state and Commonwealth jurisdictions and work together so that we can reduce community transmission,” said Anderson. “And start to get our economy back on a positive footing as soon as possible.”

TRAILER BUILDER

Toeing the line DANIEL LEWIS – OWNER OF LEWIS TRUCKIN – HAS LEARNT THAT WHEN IT COMES TO EQUIPMENT, QUALITY AND DURABILITY ARE KEY. THAT’S WHY HE HAS SPECIFIED BPW TRANSPEC DISC BRAKE AXLES AND A RINGFEDER AIR RELEASE COUPLING ON HIS NEWEST SLOANEBUILT FIVE-AXLE DOG TRAILER. It’s interesting to discover what motivates people to choose a particular brand

of component over another seemingly similar one. With emotional purchases, such as cars, brand loyalty above all else can play a big part in the purchasing decision. But when it comes to the brutally competitive field of commercial road transport, most operators choose the product they deem will go the furthest distance with the least amount of issues. Quite literally, their livelihood depends on consistently turning a profit and not having it swallowed up by unforeseen repairs to or replacement of equipment. Past experience and the trusted advice

The global team is flying the flag for enhanced operator safety, time and time again.” Among the product enhancements of the Rockinger RO 500 coupling is a pneumatic release upgrade. This enables the pin to be released pneumatically, without the need for the operator to manually perform this operation from behind the truck or trailer. “This is an important safety factor in the new design because it means the operator isn’t having to go behind the vehicle,” Michael says. “In industries like roads and construction, where vehicles could be carrying products such as asphalt at a temperature of 300°C or so, technology like this is even more important for the safety of the operator.” Other new safety enhancements include an upgrade to the sensor that monitors the

Since coronavirus took hold in February, the transport industry has shown leadership and adapted its systems and processes to be able to safely and efficiently service the needs of customers and consumers and keep supply chains moving.

Tax incentives and shifting priorities for transport companies could trigger a rise in van sales in the months ahead.

Supermarket companies are scrambling to meet e-commerce demand with fleets of rigid trucks.

This includes online orders for the most vulnerable in the community through Woolworths’ Priority Assistance service. During March and April Woolworths undertook similar conversions in a small number of stores in Sydney and Melbourne to meet online demand and service customers staying at home in line with government restrictions during the early stages of the pandemic.

This is why I love working at PACCAR in Australia. My team of local engineers work tirelessly to support our customers with custom designed engineering solutions for Australian and New Zealand applications to maximize our product reliability and efficiency for our customers. Whether it’s moving a fuel tank forward 50mm to free up space for a custom body or designing a custom exhaust mounting system to give a customer an extra 100 mm of clearance, the end result is providing our customers with trucks that meet their needs, allows them to carry more payload, and employ drivers that love being in a Kenworth or DAF truck”.
