Catching smoke What does sustainability mean to you? To me, it involves production that is consistent and of high quality. There’s a fallacy here, though, nothing lasts forever. So, how can sustainable productivity truly be sustainable? In addition to the proliferation of corporate sustainability reporting, ‘circular economy’ is threading its way through commercial waste and recycling rhetoric. The intensity of these conversations are now spilling into other areas of manufacturing and in many instances has become something to be taken for granted rather than questioned. The professional services network, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), released a report earlier this year making the case for Australia to ‘go circular’ and wholly embrace sustainable solutions that create an abundant future, finding moves to do so would generate $1.9 trillion in economic benefits over the next 20 years. Is that right? Jeremy Thorpe, PwC Chief Economist, claims a circular economy could be key to arresting worrying trends across the planet such as an over-reliance on rapidly depleting resources and instead embrace holistic ways of decoupling economic growth from the consumption of finite resources by driving down waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use and regenerating natural assets. A fellow in energy and the environment at Rice University’s Baker Institute-

6

Center for Energy Studies, Rachel Meidl, went on record to say that a circular economy does not necessarily translate to sustainability. She points out that circular economy is often used synonymously or in conjunction with ‘sustainability’, “arguably the most misconstructed descriptor of the decade, ubiquitously interwoven into the decarbonisation, energy transition, and waste minimisation narrative.” Rachel agrees there is a relationship between sustainability and circular economy however these two concepts are “vastly distinct”. Sustainability, to her, is a systems-level approach which considers environmental, social and economic factors and assess how they interact whereas circularity does not necessarily guarantee positive social, economic and environmental performance. Rachel says a comprehensive understanding of the impact on the overall system and of any potential risk shifting is needed before an action, policy or product is deemed sustainable. Also, circularity does not necessarily guarantee a positive social, economic and environmental performance. Ultimately, no methods or combination of methods exist that quantify that sustainability impacts circular strategies.

Smedley’s Engineers grows team to meet demand for PBS A new Performance-Based Standards (PBS) specialist has joined Smedley’s Engineers as the consultancy expands its service offerings to greater numbers of truck and trailer builders and operators. Chris Nisbet joins Smedley’s Engineers after more than seven years at Byford Equipment as National Sales and Compliance Manager, following two decades in the dairy equipment sector. Nisbet has been an active campaigner for improved access for PBS combinations for operators, interacting with local councils and road managers. “I have been lucky to be at the cutting edge of PBS development and pushing for more access for smarter vehicles for some time, lobbying and negotiating with all levels of government from local councils up to the Federal Transport Minister, and I will continue this work with Smedley’s Engineers,” said Nisbet. “I have been involved in the National Bulk Tanker Association working group for the southwest of Victoria aiming to improve access and looking at transport corridor requirements for the region out to 2045. I also worked to secure the volumetric network access program just released that will allow bulk tankers to carry up to 74.5-tonnes on 3,000 km of roads using compliant combinations. “I am passionate about improving access for operators, educating councils to

The Drake Group salutes trio of long-serving employees Specialist trailer builder, The Drake Group, has bid a fond farewell to three long-standing staff members with a collective total of almost 80 years of service to the company. Aveen Cosgrove started her career with The Drake Group in 1989 and says she couldn’t have asked for a better company to work for. “I started at Drake’s headquarters, which was at Rocklea (Brisbane), in admin/ reception and at that time there were only 15 guys in the workshop,” Aveen says. “Over the years I progressed through various roles including accounts, WorkCover, rehab – I was Jill of all trades and master of all.”

Striving for excellence WHILE NOT HAVING A FORMAL ENGINEERING BACKGROUND, KEN VORWERK LEARNED A LOT FROM HIS FATHER – A MECHANIC AND PLANT OPERATOR WHO HAD LIVED HIS WHOLE LIFE AROUND TRUCKS AND MACHINERY. HAVING TRANSPORTED LIVESTOCK FOR MANY YEARS, KEN CAME UP WITH SEVERAL DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS TO ENHANCE THE UTILISATION AND RELIABILITY OF THE EQUIPMENT HE USED. Ken Vorwerk was born and raised at Mount Gambier and has remained living there ever since. In February 1979 he fulfilled his dream to become an owner driver when he and his wife Judy purchased a livestock carrying business. In 1989, after buying a second-hand International T3070 tipper, Ken and his dad designed a quick release system to detach the tipper body and bolt on a turntable to pull a stock crate. This enabled Ken to use the same truck as a tipper doing local work as well as subcontracting for Belmonte Transport hauling sheep and cattle to AMH at Portland. In addition, during the winter months, Ken worked as a tow operator for Associated Transport carting general freight. In 1990 Ken replaced the T3070 with a Ford Louisville LNT after acquiring the contract for

INDUSTRY LEADER

Industry leader: Kim Kelly TR GROUP NATIONAL BUSINESS MANAGER, KIM KELLY, DETAILS HER JOURNEY IN THE COMMERCIAL ROAD TRANSPORT INDUSTRY. Q: What first drew you to the commercial road transport industry? A: My Father had a transport company which lead him to opening a semi-trailer hire business. I finished school and completed a Business Degree at University with the intention of doing anything other than working within our family business. I was eventually drawn to the challenge of contributing to growing the largest semitrailer hire company in Victoria. I like to think we set the standard for quality and service within the hire industry. As a young female in transport, I found I was having to work twice as hard to prove that I had the expertise to not only grow our business but to also offer advice to our customers on the best way to get the job done. Q: What does a standard day for you look like? A: My day normally starts with a few early phone calls from our New Zealand counterparts as they are two hours in front
