Partnerships against pandemic Is the medical supply chain ready to deliver when a viable Covid-19 vaccine is packaged for distribution? This is a question that DHL in partnership with analytics partner McKinsey & Company has considered. By their reckoning, there are more than 250 vaccines across seven platforms being developed and tested. The logistical challenges of maintaining stringent temperature requirements (up to -80°C) during transportation and warehousing, for instance, is concerning when the current network generally distributes vaccines at ~2-8°C. This freight task is truly immense when you look at the projections for global vaccine distribution, including up to 200,000 pallet shipments, 15 million deliveries in cooling boxes as well as 15,000 flights which will reportedly be required across various supply chain arrangements. DHL Chief Commercial Officer, Katja Busch, explained that sufficient planning and appropriate partnerships within the supply chain can play a key role in protecting lives against the pandemic as governments work to secure critical medical supplies

4

during health emergencies. While we deal with the current Covid-19 situation, what will our world leaders and key industry decision makers do to improve the medical supply chain? For DHL, one of the most crucial activities in pandemic response management was bringing medical supplies such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from distant sources to use as at the frontline. When UNICEF sourced 100 times more face masks and 2,000 times more medical gloves than in 2019, PPE proved to be a major challenge for inbound logistics due to geographically concentrated production, limited airfreight capacity and a lack of inbound quality checks. DHL asserts that a comprehensive setup of public health crisis strategies and structure needs to be established by governments with partnerships from both public and private sectors to ensure a stable medical supply in a future health crisis. Sounds quite right, too.

Construction is set to create more jobs for locals and help support the economy in the East Kimberley, which has been significantly impacted by COVID-19. The numbers show that a robust recovery will be challenging amid Covid-19.

Performance of Business Index (Australian PBI) lifted by 11.1 points to 44.7 in July, pointing to a further contraction in activity in response to the Covid-19 pandemic but at a slower pace than in recent months (results below 50 points in the Australian PBI indicate deteriorating business conditions, with lower numbers indicating a faster pace of deterioration in the month). Building them like they used to FISCHER’S HAULAGE IS AN INTERSTATE GENERAL FREIGHT TRANSPORT COMPANY BASED AT HOWLONG NEAR ALBURY THAT RELIES ON PANUS TRAILERS TO GET THE JOB DONE. Every transport operator has specific requirements and parameters subject to the nature of the operation. When it comes to choosing a brand of trailer to purchase, these criteria, among others, come into play. For Aaron Fischer, Managing Director of Fischer’s Haulage, ultimate durability of the trailers over a very long lifespan on interstate haulage is the number one priority. Aaron points out that his first trailer, purchased second-hand four years ago when he started the business, is a 1984 model flattop that to date, he estimates, has travelled

Strong performance during challenging times KRUEGER TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT HAS DELIVERED ANOTHER HEALTHY RESULT FOR FY2020 IN A CHALLENGING ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT. A significant reduction in debt, an improved safety outcome, strong control of costs, a further increase in capacity and a continuing investment in the business has once again delivered Krueger a strong result. Krueger attributes this ‘pleasing result’ to the dedication of all staff from the senior leadership team all the way to its capable and committed workforce. “Our people should be proud of the work they have done and the outcomes they have achieved,” business owner, John Krueger, says.

Freightmaster could source components on a same day basis rather than waiting for up to a week to have them freighted from the eastern states. “We’ve saved them a lot of freight due to having products on hand to suit their requirements,” Grant says. “Freightmaster can now have its products the same day rather than waiting a week for them. “Freightmaster has been using JOST cylinders for the last four years and is very happy with them, and also uses our other products wherever possible.” This is a sentiment echoed by Mick Tucker, who affirms the JOST products are a ‘set and forget’ solution that when used and maintained correctly have a very long and trouble-free life.

For the past 15 years Freightmaster has had a close relationship with JOST.

Arresting the shoe creep ONE OF THE LONG-STANDING BUGBEARS OF HEAVY TRUCK AND TRAILER OPERATORS – THE DREADED SHOE CREEP – HAS BEEN EFFECTIVELY STOPPED IN ITS TRACKS BY THE INNOVATIVE TRU-SHU PRODUCT. rear self-steering axles. Speaking about the Tru-Shu product, TMC Australia Operations Manager, Alex Law, explains that Tru-Shu is fitted directly onto the existing brake shoes, physically eliminating any opportunity for outward movement. “Tru-Shu keeps brake components including shoes, camshafts, rollers and return springs better aligned and eliminates the problem of brake shoes ‘walking’ out of the drums due to heat and expansion over time,” Alex says. “It facilitates even brake lining wear, which ensures longer service intervals and lower maintenance requirements, therefore reducing downtime. As a result, Alex explains, Tru-Shu equipped brakes retain optimum performance over TMC offers the Tru-Shu device on its range of drum braked axles including 17.5”, 19.5” and 22.5” wheel sizes.

your career so far? A: Highlights of the job are that I started out passionate and can honestly say I still am; employers have commented that I’ll always have a go and never give up. Also driving flash blinged-up trucks in the bush in pitch black dark at any given time. Feeling your way on roads that are buried in bull dust or sliding in the mud on remote winding mountain roads – definitely a game-changer from interstate work. Q: What do female-driven events in commercial road transport mean to you? A: It’s important to let women know that they can do this job. Over my years of driving I’ve had women approach me in awe and praise me for even attempting to drive a semi. My response is if I can do it anyone can. While it’s not for everyone, if you’re cut out for it the job can be rewarding mentally and for your purse.

In the last 12 months, I returned to TAFE studies part time and graduated with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.” In 2004, Bob was invited to join the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Queensland (CVIAQ) Board of Directors, going on to serve as Vice President for two years, under the watchful eye of Rob Brown, and then President for six years presiding over three Brisbane Truck Shows. Bob oversaw the transition of the CVIAQ to a national association, the HVIA, where Bob served as the first HVIA President. As for the biggest changes or developments he’s seen, Bob cites the introduction of B-doubles and Performance-Based Standards (PBS) designs as providing huge efficiency gains for operators. More specifically on JOST components, Bob says the basic design of the fifth wheel has changed very little over the last 30-40 years, with the main advances seen in the introduction of sensor technology to alert the driver of a mis-couple. The unusual size of the steel cut-tolength and its variants like aluminum and colorbond dictate the customised approach to the trailer combinations used at Apex Steel. That key requirement for the delivery business is fully realised through Western Star and more specifically the 4800 FS2 model, given its unique wheelbase helps keep the combination within the legal limit of 26 metres.
