What Tradies Want was recently acquired by Prime Creative Media Prime Creative Media, a publishing company with a history of supporting the construction industry. Since then, it was merged with another title – The Tradie Magazine – and emerged as a new and exciting publication The Tradie: What Tradies Want.

As editor, I’m beyond thrilled to be bringing you the best of both magazines rolled into one terrific read.

Something we never lost sight of in the merging process was prioritising you, the everyday tradie. The Tradie will feature plenty of profiles on the many individuals and professions that pepper our amazing industries. In this edition, for instance, we’ve interviewed glazier Emily and chippy Christian about their time on the tools. We also chatted with The Block contestant, Jenny, who talked us through

the madness of being an apprentice while starring on national TV.

Tradie Tough Tests are back and better than ever, with more tests in this edition than Advent-calendar choccies. We have been testing out boots from Blundstone and DeWalt, as well as testing tools from JBS and AEG – among many other top brands.

We also hit the seas for summer, with pro fishing guide Tim O’Reilly taking us on a tour of the tropics, and Suzuki Marine talking us through the evolution of recreational boating and fishing. And one thing loyal What Tradies Want readers can expect to stay the same is the humour. There’s plenty of absurd musings from across the sports and entertainment worlds in this new-look magazine.

Hopefully, you plan on enjoying some good weather and a drink or two soon –if you haven’t already.

Welcome one and all to The Tradie! Thank you for your continued readership, we look forward to bringing you more of what you love going into 2023. •

Rolling hills and rolling carts at Cape Town.

Box Cart mayhem took over Cape Town, South Africa in November for the annual Red Bull Soapbox Race.

Competitors in all manner of hilarious contraptions launched themselves down the streets of the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood –it looked like a lot of fun (if you didn’t crash)!

Now you might question the sanity of anyone willing to jump in a rickety cart, drive down a hill and over jumps at break-neck speed.

However, there’s something oddly smile-inducing about watching a bloke in a pink cardboard tank, grinning ear-to-ear, making jump after jump in the name of fun on a sunny South African afternoon.

The Block’s

landmark sale

Trade and construction reality show The Block came to a wild close in October 2022, with easily the wildest part of the conclusion being the whopping $5.6 million (rubs eyes) selling price for the home of competition winners Omar and Oz, snapped up by regular The Block bidder Danny Willis.

Obviously this left the two lads from Sydney jumping for joy, with the sale landing them a profit of over $1.6 million. Wild!

MONEY TO SPARE

To be fair, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom luxe listing at Gisborne was awesome…it had a freakin’ mini golf course and multi-purpose court!

Danny Willis is a Melbourne-based IT tycoon who’s known for showing up to The Block auction days and splashing his millions about. An eccentric fella, he even asked his dog when bidding millions on Omar and Oz’s house for its financial advice.

But it was a pretty dismal finale for other teams, as Tom and Sarah-Jane’s home, eerily similar to Omar and Oz’s, sold for $4.1 million (the reserve price was set at $4,080,000)…yikes.

It was even harder goings for a couple of the other houses which were passed in, making Omar and Oz’s historic haul the only real win of the night.

chicken EATING of

We’ve all picked up a $10 cooked chook from Coles or Woolies and gobbled the thing down in a day, right?

Well, a man in the US took that to a whole new level, devouring 40 rotisserie chickens in 40 days!

Alexander Tominsky, aka ‘The Rotisserie Chicken Guy’, is a 31-year-old Philadelphia resident who simply decided one day he would eat an entire chicken per day for over a month.

“I just ate one chicken and then something felt good, so it just seemed right just to do it,” said the clucking eating machine.

Alexander’s bizarre, yet wholesome, feat drew a massive

following on social media, with his Twitter following jumping from 400 to 40,000 followers during the cooked-chook massacre. He even confessed on TV that he didn’t really like chicken that much to begin with, making his quest to consume a bird a day even more perplexing.

Nonetheless, you can’t help but give mad respect to a bloke who’ll just eat a whole chicken everyday for the hell of it.

The video of Alexander demolishing the 40th chicken in front of hundreds of Philadelphians on a red carpet by a pier is both weird and inspiring.

He’s the hero we never knew we needed.

The finale started with a bang, but Channel 9’s ratings-smasher ended with disappointment for some. The Block winners Omar and Oz took home about $800,000 apiece after selling their house at a record price.

Kohli crushes it

ICC T20 World Cup delivers

It was a cricket fairy tale worthy of legend status, unless you were Pakistan.

In a T20 World Cup clash between them and India, a chokkas MCG witnessed some of the wildest batting at the hands of Virat Kohli.

The brisk October night was filled with highlights, but Kohli’s stunning six down the middle was stuff of nightmares for opposing bowlers.

Pakistani paceman Haris Rauf delivered the ball perfectly in the middle, and despite a high bounce Kohli took it head on and launched it straight back over Rauf’s head and into the stands!

The ball was perfectly delivered, but Kohli came at it like a bull in a China shop – hitting a six directly upwards at that

angle just didn’t seem physically possible. But he did it.

Then there was the no ball, a free hit later on, the stumping on the second-last ball, and ending on that hit across the in-field from Ravichandran Ashwin – you have a complete thriller of a game.

The match certainly delivered for the 90,000 fans packing the stadium. •

ghoulish costume

Pies star one of many dressing as Dahmer this Halloween.

Collingwood and copping flak online go hand-in-hand, even in the off-season!

Superstar forward Jack Ginnivan was the latest to get ‘spooked’ online for his Halloween costume choice.

The 19-year-old picked flavour-of-the-month serial killer and known cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer as his get-up for the adopted American holiday.

Younger generations who haven’t binged Netflix’s latest series depicting Dahmer may have to give him a Google – in short, he wasn’t a good person.

The costume drew plenty of criticism, and the criticism of that criticism (but we love social media, right?).

Tell you what, if I was coming off a one-point prelim loss, I’d be feeling pretty homicidal myself.

Jack wasn’t the only bloke jumping on the serial killer bandwagon, with plenty of our mates trying to set themselves apart from the crowd by dressing like a normal looking guy.

Whether you stand with our counterparts in the US or not, the whole concept of Halloween is having a fun, or at least clever costume to have a blast in.

Dressing up as some dude with glasses, tucking in your shirt and splashing sauce on it takes like five minutes Jack, c’mon!

Motion-sensor toilet nightlight

This product reminds us of the movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. When Elliot first finds E.T. in the shed, there’s a beam of light coming from it and a small, brown blob emerges.

Except, in this case the shed’s a toilet. Nightlights in bathrooms are nothing new, but do people really want to feel like they’re sitting on a deposit of uranium while they uhhh… deposit?

The lights also come in 16 different colours, so if you miss being out at the clubs with your mates, you can have your own 3.00am rave from the comfort of your loo.

It’s also motion-sensored, so hopefully it lets you know where you’re at before you sit down.

You can pick up a toilet nightlight from $4.00

Fried-food imitation keychains

This one is flat-out cruel. It makes us hungry just looking at it, but also raises the question… why?

Why would anyone want to walk around looking like they keep fried goods in their pockets like Napoleon Dynamite? How many seagulls or hungover uni students are going to swarm one of these hanging out of a bag?

The keychain comes in nugget, chicken-leg or wing form, as well as a fry for vegetarians. How considerate.

From just $2.00, this deliciously weird keychain can be yours.

Nicholas Cage/Mona Lisa pillow

Imagine you’re watching late-night TV, and all the while you’ve got The Cage staring into your soul from the foot of your couch.

Make sure you don’t fall asleep, because we’ll guarantee waking up to this face would be enough to put anyone in therapy.

Reviews for the pillow praise its quality and comfort, but none praise the Oscar-worthy Cage as he portrays one of the most famous women in art history.

There are other Cagethemed pillows available as well, such as Cage on a bunny’s body and Cage in a banana peel.

You can score one of these nightmareinducing (yet funny) pillows from $4.00

Mini cleaver keychain pendant

Elsewhere in bizarre keychain attachments is this airport-security nightmare.

A pocket disaster waiting to happen, these mini cleavers come with a sheath, so you don’t accidently shave somewhere you don’t want to be shaved, and are available in gold, silver or a metallic multicolour tinge.

Andrew from Minnesota summed up the crazy notion of owning a pocket cleaver with his review: ‘Very cool little flair piece for running the streets and alleyways of Minneapolis. Hiding from cops. Use it to cut tags while shoplifting!’

Haven’t you ever wanted to run the alleyways with a keychain accessory?

Overworked tradies

Have the long-term effects of COVID-19 affected our attitudes to vacations?

Statistics recently revealed 26 per cent of tradies didn’t take more than a week’s annual leave throughout 2021. A staggering 64 per cent were concerned about the impact holidays would have on their work, whether that may have been losing work and income, or the disruption their absence would have on jobs.

The gist: people are worried about taking breaks in this new COVID-19 age.

We’ve heard the term ‘quiet quitting’, and now it seems some tradies have decided on quiet overworking instead.

The idea of overworking in any line of employment is starting to get stale when we keep seeing the problems it raises. But when you think of you or your mates on the tools, the last thing anyone wants is a tradie community so overworked that serious, even life-threatening mistakes are made.

COVID-19 and a skills shortage have no doubt put a strain on the workforce, but there can only be so much pushing to be done before it’s broken beyond repair.

That being said, it seems many people are hesitant to take holidays because they may cause more stress than relaxation. The concept of flying at the moment is nauseating to me, with a whole bevy of problems facing Aussies wanting to use airline services. The issues of crying babies, turbulence and small delays seem but flies in the ointment compared to the problems we deal with now: flights outright cancelled (with little or no notice), altered to included ludicrous layovers, skyrocketing costs and a dissipating understanding of punctuality and time sensitivity have become the norm.

I’m almost always assuming now the flight I’ve booked will not be the flight I’m catching, and I’m no longer shocked when I’m told I’ll have to wait a day for the next one. And with the cost of living the way it is at the moment, flying overseas is arguably cheaper than inside Australia.

While moving from Far North Queensland to Melbourne two months ago, I was expected to fork out $1200 (economy class) for a one-way flight if I wanted to fly at any time other than 6.00am.

Suffice to say, I was stunned.

Once – if – you make it to your destination you’ll have plenty of cash-draining activities to relax the hell out of you.

While there is some concern around whether tradies are being overworked, when we look at the current holidaying climate, why would anyone want to take time off? The expenses and stress may put people off taking their hard-earned annual leave, and fair enough.

BRAND Renault New Trafic is the tradie’s day-to-day dream drive. It has upped the ante in every possible way, giving great performance and max all round comfort.

In terms of power, New Trafic’s 125kW turbocharged four-cylinder engine gives it the oomph to have you powering between worksites.

But power can only do so much for you – it’s Renault’s understanding of the modern tradie and their needs that has seen Trafic establish a healthy fandom in Australia – its biggest market outside Europe.

Convenience embodied

Comfort and efficiency is what matters to Renault, said Renault Australia General Manager Glen Sealey.

“We were always thinking of the person who’s in there with the low access point from the rear, but also a very comfy cabin up front which is more car-like than it’s ever been,” Glen said.

at that height,” Glen said. “It’s important for tradies who are going in underneath an office building for doing any plumbing or electrical fit-outs for example.”

A best-in-class 4.15m load length and maximum cargo-bay area of 6.7m3 with options for a long and short wheelbase allows for larger loads without compromising the height of Trafic. “It’s got a square entry from the rear, so putting pallets in isn’t a problem for the back and sides,” Glen said.

Comfort is also much enhanced on previous editions thanks to improved design, materials, and ergonomics which deliver the perfect mobile office for the driver. All Trafic models come with comfy upholstery with an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat and leatherette steering wheel.

↓ New Trafic’s capacity will easily have you storing all your day’s work in the back.

It’s all about accessibility for tradies in LCVs – you need your van to access all manner of tight spaces and areas. With an uncompromising height not exceeding 1.97m (1971mm), getting into carparks and other low-ceiling areas is a piece of cake for New Trafic. “We run with a single height because we’ve found the Trafic is really good for accessing car parks

For those who need a bit of groove in the drive, the Lifestyle variant takes it a step further with a heated drivers’ seat, climate control, anti-slip floor coverings, three rear seats and those groovy step-in entrance lights. The New Trafic takes another step ahead of the competition where tech is concerned, starting with an Easy Link 8-inch touchscreen with Apply CarPlay and Android Auto with Bluetooth, DAB+ and USB connectivity. Plus, on Premium variants, a wireless smartphone charger will keep your battery topped up between jobs. It comes with all the

Years of loyalty paying off

Andrew ‘Clubby’ Clubb has been a proud Trafic owner since 2007, having used them for his business which involves transporting heavy-duty bikes including dirt bikes. Clubby got his first taste of Trafic’s capabilities on a work trip in the forest.

“I was on an assignment with some mates riding in the forest out back of Canberra, and one of them turned up in one of these Trafic vans,” he said. “I didn’t know anything about them. From the outside it looked good and bigger than my van dimensionally.

“He took me for a drive around the forests and it was night and day – nicer to drive and ride in than my van. I ditched my old van, picked up a Trafic and have never looked back since. I’ve been absolutely stoked with it.”

Trafic has always been famed for its hefty payloads and ability to carry more than its fair share. Just ask Clubby, who routinely needs to keep decentsized motorbikes in the back.

“When I’ve got a couple of dirt bikes in there, there’s no issues. Even when I have a couple of larger adventure bikes which can weigh 200kg (each) – it’s really convenient,” he said. Clubby said he’s considering the New Trafic, with all the new bells and whistles that have it standing head and shoulders above the previous models.

Fuelling great work ethic

Clubby was amazed by the fuel efficiency of his Trafic, much like many who rely on the LCV to carry their work with them. “I’m going between Sydney and Melbourne every couple of months, and it’s just so comfortable on the highway,” he said. “Not only that, it’s faster and chews up less fuel than my previous van. I’ll easily do Sydney to Melbourne in one tankful.”

Adaptive Cruise Control Electric folding door mirrors

With an 80-litre tank and 2.0L engine, New Trafic is just as capable of long intervals without re-fuelling, if not more so. Automatic Trafic will only consume on average 6.5 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, while the manual version will average an impressive 7.2L/100km. “The upgrades for the vehicle are significant from the previous model to the new one … it’s more economical than it was,” Glen said. “You’re spending less time at the fuel station and more on the road being productive on the job. summer fishing

↖ Murray Island’s pristine waters make it a joy to catch king crayfishes in.

THE GREAT DIVIDE

For anyone living above the 18th parallel, which is basically a line between Broome in the west and Townsville in the east, Summers can get brutal. Hot and humid typifies December though to March. However, for anyone that loves the far north, especially fisherman, this is a time of year to relish.

For starters, the coastline will experience the highest number of windless days for the year. This is known as the doldrums. Clear water and clean reefs typify this period as warm water and current flow play major factors in the offshore fishing scene. It is typically cloudy with showers or storms always building up on the horizon. Great for fishing, horrible for sailors.

Despite the calm conditions, always be ready for a nasty change this time of year. A raincoat and well-functioning bilge are two musts during the northern monsoon or The Wet as it’s called up here. Many travellers stay well away during the summer months.

The thought of heat, cyclones and mosquito swarms thinning the crowd. Yet those in the know look forward to reaching more of those out of the way locations and generally pointing their vessel offshore.

Let’s head from east to west across the top and run through some fishing scenarios along the way. Despite painting a bit of a gloomy image of the conditions to be expected, remember this is the real action time in the far north. Everything bursting at the seams, rivers starting to flow, birds all over the place and fish usually ready to bite.

EAST COAST BLUEWATER

Many of the iconic species of the far north will be on offer over the summer period. A few on the offshore list include marlin, sailfish, wahoo, tuna, mackerel, and dolphin fish. All these speedsters will be riding the warm ocean currents, making their way closer to the edge of the continental shelf.

The area surrounding Cairns and the Ribbon Reefs out from Lizard Island are famous for the run of huge black marlin between October and December each year. This is peak performance fishing, with skilled game fishing crews taking on the world’s mightiest fish.

Little black marlin and sailfish can be found inside the Barrier Reef, accessible to smaller vessels and trailer boats. Trolling skipping baits such as garfish and little queenfish or skirted lures are great ways to prospect for billfish on the blue water current lines.

Pro

Guide

Tim O’Reilly talks Summer doldrums and surviving the northern wet season.

LOCATION Northern Australia

These same skirts and diving lures will attract the remaining fish on this list. Upping the troll speed for yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish and wahoo to between 6-8knots can be effective. These fish are mostly just on offer around the Great Barrier Reef entrances and outer edge.

Late in Spring, many of the reef fish species will move into shallow reef and shoal areas to engage in spawning activity. Despite reef closures over the new moon period, the fishing will usually remain red hot leading into early summer. As water temperatures heat up, some species will begin to vacate the reef tops and shallow structure in search of cooler water in that 20-40m depth range.

When the tidal run is a little stronger, trailer boats and charter boat dories might do some of their fishing up on top in shallow reef and lagoon areas. The water clarity is normally brilliant over the summer months, making sight fishing and shallow water popping an absolute pleasure. Coral trout, long-nosed emperor, giant trevally and Māori sea perch are suckers for poppers and stick baits. Definitely one of the more visual forms of fishing and an area of sport fishing that’s catching on fast.

Although a challenging area to fish, boat owners living around the tip of Cape York and the Torres Strait will be making adventurous forays to shoals, reefs and remote islands in calm weather. A period somewhere near Christmas will signal a change to monsoonal conditions and water clarity tends to suffer.

However, the months from October through till December can offer champagne fishing. Mainly for mackerel and trevally but also the full host of reef fish on offer. →

GULF OF CARPENTARIA

An even harder coastline to fish, most of the Gulf of Carpentaria coast is inaccessible. Punctuated by a few settlements and communities you never have to travel far around here to be alone. Massive rivers flow like veins out into this vast Gulf. The number of creeks, rivulets and little hidey-holes along its coast is endless. The sheer scale of the whole things is daunting. Conditions on land can be harsh, especially during Summer.

But there is a bright side. Throughout the early stages of Summer, much of the Gulf is at its finest. Slick, calm conditions most mornings and sometimes slick conditions for days. Beautiful, breathtaking and completely energy-sapping.

As we travel down into the Gulf from the east, leaving behind the Torres Strait, a long barren coastline appears. Just clean sand and low scrub going on and on and on. Nestled into this endless sand beach are creeks and small rivers, mostly flowing very clear water out onto the coast. Dazzlingly clean water can be found along this coastal foreshore making sport fishing a real pleasure.

Just travel a kilometre off the coast and in most directions, you can find birds and fish eating other fish. It is a veritable fish-stew out there with sharks and sharp-toothed fish competing for their share of the sushi train. Simply following your nose out to contour lines and looking for life and ground is a good enough plan most of the time.

Heading south it pays to be very careful when traversing the coast. Rocky patches and shallow shoaling sand are a nightmare to navigate in darkness or poor visibility. Extreme care is needed taking even smaller vessels into many of the creeks and rivers.

↑ Far north Queensland is great for fishing, just ask this fella.

↓ Fishing off Kimberley Creek is as fun as it is therapeutic and peaceful.

Sandy entrances which shift with the wet season typify much of this coastline.

Anglers using any type of bait, soft plastic, jig or vibe are well rewarded wherever they can find life holding between 5-25m of water. Some remarkable catches are possible within easy reach of the shore. Fish such as fingermark, coral trout, cobia, golden trevally, mangrove jack and tuskfish can be caught around reefs fringing and just offshore.

While much of the southern Gulf of Car will experience turbid, wet season conditions, it normally remains clear and fishy in the far north on either side. As we move back up the western side of the Gulf, from around Groote Island up to Gove Peninsula, conditions tend to stay a little more favourable over Summer. This is a spectacular piece of coast, with stark white sand beaches and stunning bays all the way north. Access to this stretch of coast is very restricted due to traditional ownership. Most fishers are taking off from wither Gove or Groote Island on their forays.

TOP END NT

Once you head west across Arnhem Land, you are up into the Top End of the Northern Territory. During Summer months, this particular part of the coastline suffers a little from wet season flooding and monsoonal winds blowing in from the north. You could fill encyclopaedia with areas to fish along here. Bays, river deltas and ginormous mangrove expanses typify this low relief area.

As the myriad of inland waterways and wetlands begin receiving their annual deluge of rainfall, this top end of the Territory starts firing up. In fishing circles this is known as the ‘runoff’. The period where swollen wetlands and coastal plains begin tipping over into creeks, rivers and bays. Predatory fish such as the iconic barramundi and threadfin salmon line up in these locations to feast on an abundant supply of prey items.

Early in Summer the months preceding this deluge can be exceptional for chasing barramundi. The buildup produces some huge barra along the Northern Territory coast and is one of the most likely periods to produce cricket-score catches. This happens because many of the fish are congregated around the coastal foreshore, rocky headlands and shallow reef patches in spawning aggregations.

Late in Summer, low-pressure systems start following something called the monsoon trough. Forming a band across the tropical north, it tends to be where the bulk of rainfall is conceived during this period. Cyclones usually come from singular

low pressure systems hovering over the Coral Sea, in the Gulf or somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

It is a tricky time to fish the Territory, but the rewards are there for those willing to brave conditions. Having sweat and getting wet are two things you can take for granted once the storms break. Locals are usually more than happy to take up this challenge just to have the joint to themselves.

KIMBERLEY COAST

Heading west of Darwin and across the vast expanse of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, Summer is not for the uninitiated around here. The same monsoonal winds which make fishing tricky across the Top End, also reduce opportunities along the northern Kimberley coastline. The build-up to the wet can be spectacular as lightning shows and distant thunder are an everyday event.

Fishing will also be red hot in NovemberDecember, evidence coming with all the northern pelagic species feeding in overdrive before the wet season takes hold. Mackerel, trevally and queenfish are but some of the silver speedsters ready to challenge fisherman. Well off shore, sailfish and schools of long tail tuna make the most of calm conditions and clean water.

With a smaller tide range, the stretch of northern coastline between the Berkley River and Mitchell River

will have the most productive and consistent fishing. Water clarity is a major factor in fishing the Kimberley and less run correlates with a more pleasant fishing experience. Around the Cambridge Gulf on the east and right along the western coastline, huge tidal run tends to make the fishing tricky, especially with rain and river run-off thrown into the mix.

The Kimberley can produce outspending fishing for shallow reef species. Coral trout, fingermark, emperors and snappers can be prolific, with various trevally there to ensure rods stay consistently bent. Along the coastal fringe, barramundi, mangrove jack, threadfin and blue salmon infest the shallow sand, mud and rocky bays.

PLANNING TRAVELS

Conditions are not always inviting, but they are often perfect for boating over Summer. Expect seriously hot weather and be ready to up your fluids. The ever-constant threat of a cyclone exists from around December right through till April however these days warnings allow plenty of time to plan and avoid

No need to rule out fishing the far north this time of year, but ground your expectations in reality. Of course, this entire article comes with a crocodile and stinger warning. Summer is particularly bad for both. ACHTUNG!

What do you do when you have the most dominant motocross bike in the paddock? If you’re a Yamaha engineer the answer is make it even more dominant. Already winning around the globe, the MY23 YZ450F has been totally reworked to make it lighter, slimmer, stronger and faster.

Roostin’

The Australian media was treated to Yamaha’s all new class-leading motocross weapon at Ride Park in Melbourne’s western outskirts recently – an event hosted by the Monster Energy Yamaha CDR team, including Luke Clout and Australian Pro MX1 champion Aaron Tanti. They were joined by Australian WMX champion Charli Cannon and Josh Coppins from JCR Racing in New Zealand.

An injured hand prevented Clout from turning any laps, but Tanti and 17-year-old Cannon – who had never ridden a 450 motocrosser before – were on hand to run in the bikes before letting the new bikes loose with the press.

Tanti appreciated the roomier cockpit, the slimmer ergos and the lightweight handling, while Cannon – who showed impressive speed – liked the power delivery and found it easy to transition from her YZ250F.

Light and fast

The following day the media had the chance to test the new bike, which is essentially new from the ground up. The engine, for example, is fully revised, including a free-flow induction system, new piston, bigger inlet valves, optimised port shapes, rebalanced

runs an internal oil tank with greater capacity – all designed to offer an increase in maximum rpm and more mumbo for longer, stronger pulling power.

The power is tuneable thanks to the free-todownload app, so you can dial in your preferred delivery using your smartphone. The app has been updated for MY23 with some great easy-to-use functions, including a simple scroll bar for power delivery and new features such as traction control, launch control and a lap timer. Plus the bar-mounted blue button can switch power maps on the fly.

The bilateral-beam frame chassis is also revised, strengthened and lightened for added cornering ability and front-end grip while the suspension is retuned to match. The seat is flatter and more rounded to make it even easier to move around on. And did we mention slim? YZ450F is thinner at the knee-grip point as well as having slimmer shrouds.

The bike that started a revolution If you wanted to win 25 years ago, you needed to be on a two-stroke motocrosser – four-strokes were considered fine for trailriding but not highrevving enough to race on.

Yamaha turned that established notion on its head when a four-stroke prototype, full-factory machine was unveiled at the 1997 Las Vegas supercross. Doug Henry rode that prototype to victory, sparking the first production modern four-stroke motocross bike, the 1998 YZ400F. This high-revving, lightweight machine hit the ground running and the rest is history. Fourstrokes took over as the bikes to race and win on, while global two-stroke sales fell through the floor.

Fast-forward to 2010 and Yamaha once again revolutionised the industry by revealing a YZ450F with a reversed engine – the intake came in from the front while the exhaust exited the rear. The downdraught design allowed engineers to boost power while centralising mass, offering a big boost to handling.

The MY23 continues with this rearward-facing design and it remains one of Yamaha’s trump cards. Unlike the four-stroke engine, it has yet to be copied throughout the industry.

The new YZ450F has gone on a serious diet with many components shaved down to make for a dazzling 109kg wet – that’s with a full tank of fuel. This makes the new motocross weapon one of the lightest in its class.

On track

So how does the new bike ride?

‘Mind blowing,’ according to MXTV and ADB tester Lee Hogan, who was particularly impressed with the standard full-power map that comes with the bike.

Aaron Tanti and Luke Clout are already confirmed to race this model for Australia’s Monster Energy Yamaha CDR team for 2023. But what about reigning US MX and SX champion Eli Tomac? Word on the street suggests he was holding back inking a deal until he rode the new bike…now he’s on board, happy to once again show the opposition the way around the track.

The all-new YZ450F will be available from December 2022 in Team Yamaha Blue only and in limited quantities, so contact your local Yamaha dealer to place your order. Pricing is $14,549, including GST, ready-to-ride. That’s a small price to pay for the winningest bike in the paddock.

Summer’s here. It’s time to hop in the boat! Greg Lamprecht from Greg’s Wicked Fishing takes us through the changes in boating and fishing over the years.

Fishing and boating is a popular hobby for millions of Australians.

In the past decade, these pursuits have evolved dramatically, and the advancements in technology can only be described as mindblowing. Let’s dive deep into all areas of this multi-billion-dollar industry and see where technology has grown these much loved hobbies.

BOATS

While major advancements in hull design have been limited, some manufacturers continue to make adjustments and fine tune. Changes in hull deadrise, chines and planing strakes are common areas to improve boat handling and performance.

But the biggest improvements have come within the internal layouts. →

the future of boating

Cabin designs have become sleeker, making boats look more aerodynamic and more appealing to the eye. Large glass front and side windows give the user greater visibility with an increase in wave deflecting strength over conventional perspex/ acrylic windows and zipped-up clears.

Big improvements have also been made with dash layouts, which now accommodate large flushmounted screens for navigation and fish finding.

This is now similar with centre- or side-console boats, with big improvements to increase the size of the console to accommodate more electronics and offer more protection to users when the weather turns nasty.

Other areas of improvement have been the increase in fuel capacity, inbuilt refrigeration, compact anchor winches, suspension, seating and custom EVA foam flooring.

OUTBOARDS

The days of noisy, smoky, two-stroke outboards are well and truly over.

Back in mid-2020, legislation was introduced that prevented selling or buying a new two-stroke outboard due to ever-tightening emission controls. Since the early 2000s, four-stroke outboards have become hugely popular and continue to dominate the market due to low noise, low emissions, reliability and great fuel economy.

Two decades after two-stroke sales were outlawed, four-stroke outboards have come a long way, with technology playing a crucial part in performance and economy. I’ve been lucky to experience these changes firsthand using Suzuki outboards.

Areas of improvements include internal engine design, intake manifold/induction design, dual counter-rotating propellers, gearbox ratios and electronic control units. Suzuki’s unique ‘Lean Burn’ technology allows the engine computer to process real-time information from various engine sensors and deliver optimum air/fuel ratios. The system reduces fuel use dramatically. With my own sevenmetre boat I saw a substantial difference when I went with a Lean Burn outboard and picked up an

↓ Having side scan/structure scan allows seeing all that lies beneath.

extra 150km of range per tank of fuel!

Another big benefit in modern outboards is the introduction of drive-by-wire throttle control.

Drive-by-wire means instead of having conventional mechanical gear-and-throttle cables, a small wiring harness is used between the throttle control and outboard to achieve the same result. The benefit is that it allows for a smooth transition between gears, eliminating any grinding commonly found with conventional cable systems.

The latest in outboard design is the integration between the vessel’s electronic navigation/auto pilot and outboard steering. This allows for many features to be enabled, the most popular being ‘boat point/spot lock’ which gives the user the option of holding the vessel directly on a selected spot while they fish. It’s done using satellite GPS data, which then communicates with the vessel’s steering system and throttle to keep the boat precisely on a point set by the user.

ELECTRONICS

Without a doubt, the biggest advancement in modern day boating and fishing is in electronics.

While most brands offer standalone fish finders or GPS plotters depending on the budget, the upper-level units are now commonly referred to as an ‘MFD’ – a multi-function display.

An MFD that will display both fish finder and plotter using a split screen, or even have a four-way split screen and run radar or side scan if you have it.

Adding many devices together is called ‘networking’ and allows for such things as a stereo controlled from the MFD, or even bringing up real time data from the outboard.

The most important tool for fishermen is the fish finder.

the future of boating

Fish finders or sounders have become more powerful with far greater detail, allowing anglers to fish in deeper water and have a far better understanding of what is under the boat. Brands like Furuno have some excellent deep-water technology, including its DFF3D, which allows seeing double the depth you’re fishing in. This means in 100m of water, the 120-degree transducer beam will display close to 200m of the ocean-floor information on the MFD. It’s done by scanning 50 points per second of the ocean floor to create a 3D image.

This data is also used to create Furuno’s unique ‘personal bathometric generator’, which overlays and converts the depth data into colour on the GPS plotter screen and gives detailed, 3D bathometry charts that are saved to the MFD. Any up, down, or side-to-side rocking of the boat would make any depth data incorrect, so an image stabilizer is fitted to the roof of the vessel which takes any boat motion into consideration and ensures depth readings and mapping are extremely accurate.

While conventional sonar allows seeing the depth and fish under a boat in deeper water, it’s somewhat limited and ineffective if fishing an estuary or shallow water. This is where having side scan/structure scan fitted has huge benefits. It allows seeing structure such as rocks, trees, wrecks and fish in great detail a considerable distance from the vessel.

The latest and greatest technology for dam, lake and estuary fishing is what’s known as ‘live view’. A transducer is mounted on a pole and lowered below the hull where it can be rotated in the direction of an area of interest, say a log or tree under the surface. In real time it displays the tree or structure and any fish swimming around it. It can even display a lure sinking or passing the tree and the fish making a strike, which is amazing technology.

Other areas of advancement with electronics are boat audio, lighting, custom switchboards, autopilot systems, radar and electric motors.

Electric motors are mounted on the front of the vessel, and once at a destination, allow the boat to quietly move or hold on spots. It’s vital equipment for fishing estuaries, banks, bays and lakes effectively, and is now commonly used by bigger boats for reef fishing as well.

FISHING EQUIPMENT

Actual fishing equipment has also evolved.

Rod and reel design has advanced to the point where there’s a different model to suit every individual species and technique. That may seem a little over the top, but it actually helps improve catch rates. A diehard fisho, you’ll want any possible advantage, so it’s not hard to have 10 or 20 – or more! – rod-and-reel set ups to suit all different applications.

Lures also continue to advance, and once again there’s a different type, style and colour to suit every application, so it can be a daunting process walking into a tackle shop and trying to choose one from the thousands on the shelf. General tackle such as hooks, swivels and sinkers really haven’t changed a great deal, but there’s no doubt braided lines have become thinner and stronger, which has big benefits over the standard monofilament lines.

Deep-drop fishing has become very popular across Australia and suitable equipment is required to fish depths of 100m to 600-plus metre depths. While some choose specialised rods and reels for deep-water jigging, large electric reels are dominant for deep-drop fishing. While a lot of people may think this is cheating or not very sporting, it’s actually great fun, and the skill comes from finding the fish and being able to position the boat to ensure the baits land where the fish are.

The benefit of fishing the deep is never knowing what you’re going to pull up, and the majority of the deep-water fish are absolutely delicious eating. •

a real Trailglazier

A desire to get away from the stuffy life of desk work saw Emily Hessell landing a dynamic and independent career in glazing.

It wasn’t a profession the 29-year-old said she thought she’d enjoy a decade ago, but Emily has settled into the glazing industry like a wellinstalled pane.

Fresh out of high school, Emily found herself stuck at a desk working as a draftsperson, something she’d vowed to avoid.

“Something I said in high school was I’d never get an office job funnily enough – I did drafting for about three-and-a-half years,” Emily said.

“I said enough’s enough and applied for about 15 different apprenticeships doing pretty much anything that wasn’t a sparkie, mechanic or plumber.

“Glazing was the one I heard back from, so I went for it, I didn’t know what a glazier was at the time, but I went for it and now I love it.”

Eight years on from her first step into the world of glazing, and it appears to be the right move for Emily.

Starting at 7am each day, the Perth-based glazier predominantly does commercial glazing for mid-to-low level apartment blocks amid what is a construction boom in the city.

Jobs can vary in terms of difficulty and workload, but Emily said the key principles never change.

“It can get quite technical, but at the end of the day it’s a square going into a square hole,” she said.

When desk work again crept into Emily’s life six months ago, she decided to go out on her own and start up Hessellmakes.

“I was doing office work again … the opportunity came up to do some contracting and work for myself and I thought ‘why not?’,” she said.

“It’s been pretty great; I’ve been lucky to tee up someone I used to work with to team up.”

Glazing to the beat of her own drum certainly wasn’t on the cards entering 2022, but Emily has no regrets so far.

“I do this trade because I’m just as capable as anyone else, I think it’s just about sticking with it and seeing it through,” she said.

“Taking that step was the scariest bit, but I think that leap has worked out and I’ve ended up where I want to be in the end.”

Emily Joined the NAWIC Women in Trades committee after awarded the NAWIC Tradeswomen of the year in 2020 and judging the 2021 awards.

“Being in the WiT committee has been great, the support from meeting women who are in the trades and have been through similar experiences has been a welcome change,” she said.

“It’s nice to know there are plenty of women out there trying to push for change within the construction industry.”

Glazing hasn’t always been a smooth journey for Emily, but it’s been one she’s relished as she continues to grow both Hessellmakes and her personal glazing skills.

Her advice? “Just stick with it, some days are really hard, and people say things that aren’t exactly nice.”

“But you need to take the good with the bad up until a certain point,” she said.

↑ Emily knows of only two active woman glaziers in WA, herself included.

TORANA TORANA

Teachings

Leo Nech is a born petrol head.

Hot Devil’s Managing Director currently roars about the roads in his HSV VF GTS, fitted with a W507 package, but his love for cars has been as ever-present as his passion for Hot Devil – a familyowned operation that’s been in business since 1999.

Leo’s first car was an LJ Torana – one of the most iconic and beloved Aussie cars throughout the 1960s, ’70s and beyond. But as they say, the light that burns twice as bright lasts half as long, and Leo’s Torana was sadly stolen after he’d had it just six months.

“Some four years ago my son started to look around and happened to find one for sale in apparently reasonable condition,” he said. “We drove to the person who advertised the car to find the Torana, with little rust, sitting in a garage.

“The car only had two owners in its lifetime. After the purchase, we were able to drive it home –albeit with a great deal of smoke coming from the exhaust,” Leo explained.

Switched Leo and his son’s newest purchase was thankfully rust-free, however it sported a ‘dull’ beige with plenty of work needed on the interior. Leo enlisted

the help of a mechanic, painter and upholsterer to work on restoring the old beast.

“We stripped the car to the bare shell and thus the process began,” he said. “I decided to move away from the original beige duco and try an indy orange colour.”

A particularly challenging part of the restoration for Leo was sourcing and restoring components.

“Finding certain parts proved difficult,” Leo said. “I recall a time where we needed to find an inhibitor switch. I searched high and low for weeks to finally find a guy with a shed full of parts who could supply the switch.”

Purring along

The three-and-a-half year process saw the original brown leather become a full black interior, rebuilt suspension, and a 173/6-cylinder engine.

“I recall the first drive out of the workshop,” Leo said. “I felt I was in the ’70s.

“The wife and I constantly take the Torana out for Sunday drives. It handles great and purrs along. It feels like a go-cart.

“Running a business these days can be stressful, but all is forgotten when you turn the key and the 50-year-old girl comes to life.”

Chipon Shoulder

New Chick on The Block

Nothing makes an apprenticeship more exciting than becoming a contestant on Australia’s biggest homebuilding reality show.

From diving into carpentry and building a house, to suddenly being thrust into the world of reality TV, the last 18 months have been an absolute roller coaster for Jenny Heath.

The 25-year-old chippy, along with partner Dylan, form a dynamic duo competing in this year’s season of NINE’s The Block.

The couple found their knack for building homes after buying a plot of land at Palm Beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Dylan’s family are born and bred builders, but this was Jenny’s first foray into the world of tradies.

STRONG FOUNDATION

An apprenticeship in carpentry wasn’t on the cards at first, but once Jenny found she could complete the TAFE course online she was hooked.

“I’m just doing it all online. I don’t have to go into TAFE – it’s awesome,” she said.

“When we started building our own place, I thought I’d do my own apprenticeship to save money and it would just be the two of us.”

With the couple starting the day with the gym at 6am, their can-do attitude had them working through until sunset.

“We got up nice and early, go the gym then got to the house before seven,” Jenny said.

“Because it’s our house, we’re working on it pretty late. Normally we’d finished by three, but we definitely don’t do that.”

Dylan’s years of expertise may be one thing, but Jenny’s freshness makes for an exciting combo on the worksite.

“Sometimes I’ll ask him if he’s sure we’re doing something right, and he’ll say, ‘Jen, right now I know more than you’,” Jenny laughed.

“I think when I know just as much as him, we’ll be even better because we can bounce ideas off each other.

“I’ve learnt so much, I feel like I’ve come so far. Between the two of us, we built our whole house.”

POOLED RESOURCES

It was during the initial stages of building the house Jenny came across the chance to appear on The Block, and like many who take their shot at reality-TV stardom, she threw her hat in the ring with little hope.

However, a quirky application video had producers buzzing to get the two on the show.

“I must have clicked something because I got an email asking to apply for The Block, and I thought, ‘Maybe we should’,” Jenny said.

“We had started building our place at Palm Beach, and we literally just filmed ourselves in the dirt with the pool we’d just put in. Dyl was in the pool sipping on a cocktail while I was digging a hole in a trench and getting him to come over and help me – it was pretty funny. I guess they liked it.”

FAIR TRADE

As well as being one of the more enigmatic pairings on the show, Jenny is breaking new ground as the first female tradie to appear on The Block.

↑ The golden pair from the Gold Coast. Jenny and Dylan met while working at a ski resort in Whistler, Canada.

tradie profile
Tradie - What tradies want.

“I think it’s pretty awesome. So many women have reached out to me saying I inspired them to take up a trade,” she said.

“That’s so cool, because people know anyone can do it. It’s not just a male industry. Females are just as good too.

“I think it’s just empowering to know women can do it. I think more women should take it up.”

CHOPPING BLOCK

From building a wood-fired hot tub and testing ice baths, to assembling the show’s longest hallway (40 metres!), Jenny has provided viewers with plenty of entertainment as she navigates the world of homebuilding.

But building a five-bedroom, two-bathroom mega home in the Macedon Ranges within a few weeks certainly provided a steep learning curve.

“Oh my gosh! The things you see on The Block in 12 weeks you couldn’t do in a year normally!” Jenny exclaimed.

With Dylan and Jenny having plenty of time on the tools at their Palm Beach property, the two formed a powerful one-two tradie punch heading into The Block.

“Dylan’s had the tool belt on since he was

five,” Jenny said. “Then when we got on The Block, I had an upper hand because I knew what Dylan was talking about when he’d say ‘let’s do this or that’, because I knew we could do pretty much anything we wanted. It was pretty handy.”

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

With this season of The Block now complete, Jenny and Dylan are putting the finishing touches on their Palm Beach home and growing their building business – Smooth Sailing Designs.

“We were sailing on a yacht in Sydney and we were trying to think of a name for ourselves, and we came up with ‘Smooth Sailing’,” Jenny said.

“It was hard doing our house with just the two of us, but we work so well together it was easy at the same time.”

Once they’ve completed the home, Jenny and Dylan plan to sell it and start over somewhere else, forming a building power couple on the Gold Coast.

As well as pursuing their homebuilding dreams, Jenny will also finish up her apprenticeship and become a fully qualified chippy.

“I could do the course for the next six months and I’ll be fully qualified. I just need to sit down and get all the theory work done,” she said.

“I’ve got a bit of catching up to do – when I was on The Block, I didn’t do any online work.”

Between building a house at Palm Beach and her time on The Block, you could say Jenny’s welcome into the world of trades was unlike many. Both presented her with plenty of challenges, but Jenny wouldn’t want to change one bit.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but once you know what you’re doing it’s easier,” she said.

“In the beginning, if you’re not used to standing all day or being hands-on, you can get really tired. Once you push past the sixmonth mark, I think it gets a lot easier and you can get to enjoy it a bit more.”

↑ Jenny didn’t plan to become an accredited carpenter, but decided to take up the tools when she discovered she could do the course online.

↑ Jenny had to put her apprenticeship on hold while they were filming The Block, and plans to finish it now the show’s ended.

ISUZU UPGRADE

Dubbo is a town of weather extremes: dry, stinking-hot summer months and frigid winters that barely creep above double digits.

This all keeps Marty from Marty Nelson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning well and truly on his toes all year round. It’s the diverse weather of Dubbo that provides so much work for his growing business.

THAT’S WHO

While the Aussie ute is an icon of the job site, Marty found running multiple utes didn’t give the capacity for the high level of jobs he had to handle. Utes meant making multiple trips back and forth, not only to cart all the equipment needed for the day, but to also get the team to the job.

A light-duty truck seemed to be the answer.

“My business has been going approximately 15 years,” sparked Marty. “Originally I was an electrician. Then I diversified into refrigeration, and ultimately into air conditioning.

“Everything in my business revolves around refrigerated air conditioning, heating, and cooling. When I first started it was predominantly evaporative air conditioning.”

Marty works all year long, solving the many problems that arise with temperature control of

homes, buildings and businesses throughout the central west of New South Wales.

Covering such a large, and at times remote, swathe of the state requires reliable transport that’s big on comfort, which is why Marty recently traded up to an Isuzu NPR 45-155 Tradepack.

EFFICIENT

With an electrician’s background, Marty says he prefers to be on the tools, but the success of the business meant he’s progressed to overseeing the whole operation.

The team is supervised by Marty who keeps everything running smoothly, and his customers appreciate the personal touch, knowing he’s on top of the jobs and at the helm.

Even with two admin staff working alongside, “I’m generally the first port of call,” he smiled.

During the booming summer months, Marty’s business can field anywhere between 120 to 170 calls a day, so it’s critical to have someone who knows the lay of the land inside and out.

“Sometimes in the busy months we just can’t get to everyone. We try to have a 48-hour turnover for jobs, but occasionally we’re forced to send customers in the direction of different trades who can help them out.

↖ With the Tradepack’s 4500kg GVM, Marty’s NPR is the king of the NSW central-west roads.

1 The Isuzu NPR 45-155 Tradepack can load up to four installations for one trip.

2 Marty’s business answers between 120 and 170 calls per day during summer.

The Tradie - What Tradies Want.
Marty Nelson’s Isuzu NPR makes getting from A to B to C a breeze.

“Reputations are everything in regional communities, so our guiding principles of integrity, honesty and loyalty are clear in the way we do business – it’s all about getting results for our customers.

“I didn’t even have a ute back when I began in the business, so I used to borrow a ute from a friend of mine to get things started. The business has progressed to now include a fleet of work vehicles, with the latest addition being our new Isuzu Tradepack.

“What’s great about the Isuzu truck is I can put four installations in the back, then drop them on-site. So we’re not towing a trailer or getting the boys to travel from job site to job site,” he said.

MAKES SENSE

These business efficiencies are at the heart of the NPR 45-155 Tradepack from Isuzu’s popular prebodied range of trucks.

Featuring a GVM of 4500kg and a GCM of 9000kg, the NPR also has a 4500kg towing capacity, meaning all Marty’s payload needs are met, and all on a standard car driver’s licence.

Powered by Isuzu’s four-cylinder 4HK1-TCN engine, the NPR has plenty of punch at 114kW

Isuzu’s six-speed manual transmission. The fuel efficiencies of a manual made plenty of sense given the application and environment.

“We chose the manual and it’s been great,” synchromeshed the Dubbo local. “It drives well, it’s comfortable, and I love it. For getting the job done and what purpose the truck serves, it couldn’t be any better!”

“You only need a car licence to drive it, so it’s accessible to the whole team. That was a major advantage when it came to picking an Isuzu truck – it’s so convenient.”

The driving style and accessibility is not the only aspect that appealed to Marty and the day-in-and-day-out needs of his crew.

“We can chuck piping on top. We can store so much on the tray. The truck has ladder racks. You just jump in and away you go.

“The Tradepack lets us load four jobs in the back. Now we can have four lots of ducting and air conditioning, meaning we can just deliver on site to each house without stopping in between.”

Dubbo’s Isuzu dealership, Tracserv, came through for Marty when he made the switch from utes to a truck last year.

“The new Tradepack helps because it’s more effective and more efficient to deliver product to the job sites – it minimises the manpower we need to get it there compared to using multiple utes and multiple trips,” Marty concluded.

Efficiency AND

SAFETY without compromise

Safety should be No.1 when buying equipment and Milwaukee® Safety Solutions offer the best peace of mind you can get.

Safety isn’t necessarily at the front of a tradie’s mind when buying tools, even though it’s one of the most important aspects to consider. Ensuring everyone is operating with equipment that prioritises safety is vital, every day on every job.

Thankfully, Milwaukee Tool has been manufacturing products with safety in mind since the US company kicked off nearly a century ago.

“Safety is at the core of how we design our products,” said Milwaukee Tool Australia’s Senior Product Manager of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), Shannon Bruce. “We put our end users first and last by investing in innovation that will keep Australians safe on the job site.”

COMMITTED TO CORDLESS

There are plenty of tools on offer ahead of Christmas, and Milwaukee Tool has you covered with some great (and safe) cordless products.

wrists safe, with over-rotation limited to 45 degrees rather than a full 360-degree spin.

“We are committed to a cordless job site. We engineer safety features in our tools and make ergonomic considerations across our products,” Shannon said.

“We have introduced innovations like our RAPID STOP™ brake technology, our patented AUTOSTOP™ Kickback Control and entire systems like the MX FUEL™ Equipment System that is designed to give industrial users a powerful alternative to petrolpowered and corded equipment.”

EYE PROTECTION

Thanks to its variety, Milwaukee PPE equipment is second to none.

It’s got you covered – literally – with a range of equipment to protect you from head to toe – eyes, ears, hands, arms and legs.

↑ Milwaukee’s top-ofthe-line eye protection is certified to AS/NZS 1337.1:2010.

But Milwaukee doesn’t just have industry-leading quality. Many Milwaukee marquee products sport the brand’s patented RAPID STOP™ and AUTOSTOP™ technologies. The RAPID STOP™ brake helps to ensure potentially hazardous equipment like the blades of angle grinders and circular saws stop spinning in under three seconds from shutting off the tool.

AUTOSTOP™ technology uses an electromagnetic clutch that activates during lock up to prevent overrotation of drills. The technology is designed to keep

The Milwaukee range of heavy-duty eyeprotection meets the robust certified requirements of the Australian and New Zealand Safety Standard AS/ NZS 1337.1:2010.

That means the glasses are built for maximum protection while providing unimpeded vision and maximum comfort, and are classed to withstand medium impact – the force delivered from an object travelling 45 metres per second.

The Milwaukee range of performance and highperformance glasses sport top-notch anti-scratch and anti-fog lenses, and both variants feature removable gaskets to protect against debris and dust. Both come in tinted and non-tinted editions.

HAND PROTECTION

Made from durable materials including polyurethane, nitrile and leather, the massive range of Milwaukee Safety Gloves includes EN388-certified models to keep digits safe from cuts and punctures.

Each glove variant has been pushed to its limits during testing to ensure hands remain safe around tools. They’re cut by a weighted circular blade (coupe test), stabbed with a straight razor-sharp blade (tomodynamometer or TDM Cut Test Machine) and tested to withstand 7.0kN of force, among other applications.

All Milwaukee fingered gloves feature SMARTSWIPE™ fingertips, allowing the use of a smartphone or tablet without removing the gloves.

“Our growing Milwaukee PPE range is the next step in our promise to keep tradespeople safe on the job site,” Shannon said. “We realised many existing PPE solutions in the market had experienced little change over time and lacked versatility, flexibility and

durability. This lack of innovation has led some users to resort to altering their job site protection to maximise productivity at the expense of safety.”

DROP PREVENTION

With everything going cordless, dropping an unsecured tool at the worksite can be dangerous and costly.

Fortunately, the impressive selection of Milwaukee locking-tool and wristlanyards and handles are designed to keep prized tools secure. The lanyards can handle anywhere between 0.9kg-22kg, and feature powerful shock absorption and simple and quick connection.

KNEE PADS

Striking a balance between comfort and durability, Milwaukee Tool has a wide range of knee pads.

Need something heavy-duty for indoor/outdoor flooring, roofing or painting? Maybe something lighter for general day-to-day work? Or will you be working on jagged, uneven surfaces?

Milwaukee knee pads cater to your needs, with features like hinged thigh straps for mobility, protective gel and non-marring caps to stop them from damaging sensitive surfaces.

“We’re trying to shift the PPE market by offering solutions designed from the ground up to meet the demands of the constantly changing job site,” said Shannon. “We want to keep our users safe without sacrificing their productivity.

“Everyone should feel safe on the job site. We want to do our part to help make sure tradespeople make it home safely every day.”

BRAND Paslode

Pinning IT DOWN

Paslode’s CoilMaster

FOR THIS TRADIE TOUGH TEST, we caught up with carpenter Mark Bowman and Paslode’s Australian and New Zealand Technical Rep Mitch Barrett to share the differences most tradies won’t be familiar with when not only using but maintaining their Paslode CoilMaster and for those tradies who haven’t yet purchased or used the CoilMaster you will get an appreciation for this impressive tool after reading this review.

To start with, let me just say that Mitch is a complete guru regarding the inner workings and general knowledge of all things Paslode. He fixes them, pulls them apart, and tests various parts and components to see exactly what they can do. So when it came to the subtleties of the CoilMaster, I thought my carpenter mate Mark Bowman was the perfect tradie to involve as he has owned almost every other Paslode gun on offer in Australia but had yet to try the CoilMaster.

60 The Tradie - What tradies want.
↑ Mark and Blake getting to know the Paslode CoilMaster after years of embracing the FrameMaster. ← Mark shooting coil nails into the 16mm James Hardie cladding.

We soon found out when chatting with Mitch that the CoilMaster is a considerably different gun from the FrameMaster. Understanding these differences and applying Mitch’s tips would improve the gun’s performance and prolong its lifespan.

TEST #1 OIL IT UP, BABY!

Paslode produces a specific lubricant for the CoilMasters Coil feed system. Now, this coil feed should have a few oil drops added every 1000 firings, but after chatting with Mitch, this could be something you do every morning before you use the gun. “There are two areas that need a few drops added. Don’t be tempted to use a lubricant designed for an air gun (other lubricants have a different viscosity and won’t suit the CoilMaster coil feed), as Paslode’s specifically engineered CoilMaster lubricant is designed for the gun and its specific mechanisms, temperature and Impulse system. Keeping the CoilMaster well lubricated will keep it firing clean with precision and a lot fewer jams.

TEST #2 SEQUENCING

Correct firing sequencing is essential for any tool, and the same stands true for the CoilMaster. “Fully depressing the tip before firing the trigger allows for a fully powered activation from the very first shot. Then, release the trigger and unload the pressure on the tip before fully depressing the tip, before firing the next nail. When following this sequencing, you are allowing the gun to prepare properly, then fire with the full force of

the Impulse system. When done correctly, the CoilMaster can fire up to two nails per second,” shared Mitch.

TEST #3 ONSITE TESTING

Our tradie Mark Bowman was in the process of installing 16mm James Hardie cladding, so he was the perfect guy to put the Paslode CoilMaster through its paces. Our coil nails when fired into the JH cladding were nicely sitting just below the surface. You won’t find a tougher product than this 16mm James Hardie Cladding. So, it was impressive that the coil nails and the Impulse system had the power to do an excellent job of nailing these big boards.

“This gun would be perfect for timber cladding, bracing ply, fencing repairs and a pile of other applications where the fuss of setting up compressors, air hoses and alike is just too much like hard work. The speed and ease of the Paslode CoilMaster is awesome, and now we all know how to properly lubricate the gun before use and fire it with correct sequencing. It’s going to last even longer on demanding Australian sites,” Mark said.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

1 A couple of drops every few days will keep your CoilMaster performing at its peak with an optimum lifespan.

2 A little self-maintenance and correct firing of the CoilMaster will produce top shelf results and a long life of the tool.

Even though the CoilMaster isn’t a new gun here in Australia, there would be plenty of tradies trying to use it just like their FrameMaster. But the build and firing mechanism differences require a slightly different approach. By applying these techniques shared by Mitch today, you will achieve better results over a longer lifespan of your existing or future Paslode CoilMaster.

Built with quality components throughout, compliant with Australian standards, and manufactured to stringent European CE standards, the reliability and durability that built Alemlube’s impressive reputation is clear to see.

I spent some time with Byron in Dynamic Automotive’s workshop, which has four Alemlube Automotive 4.0t 2-Post Floor Base hoists lined up and working hard, and another Italian-made Alemlube hoist set up out the back.

TEST #1 EASE OF USE

With a width between the columns of 2760mm and a four-tonne lifting capacity, the two-post hoist system will suit a vast number of workshops. But it’s the ease of use that seems to impress most.

“Our Alemlube hoists are just so effortless to use,” Byron bayed. “It’s the speed of the process we

love. It’s not that they operate extremely fast. It’s more that it’s a simple and reliable process which lifts at just the right speed we need,” said Byron.

TEST #2 RELIABILITY

Dynamic Automotives has been in the game for over a decade and has used Alemlube for more than seven years as its hoist of choice.

“We have a lowish ceiling height here at Brookvale, and that made the Alemlube’s Automotive 4.0t 2-Post Floor Base hoist the ideal choice for us,” explained Byron. “We work on a wide range of vehicles, but we tend to specialise in older Volkswagens. We just love working on the classics. The reliability and durability of the Alemlube hoists have led us to trust the brand like no other.

3

“As you look around our workshop today there’s a pile of other Alemlube products we know and love. The design and build quality behind this brand are so impressive we wouldn’t trust our business with anyone else.”

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

It was a great experience to watch the team at Dynamic Automotive in full swing as they ripped into their Friday workload. Jun, the owner, started out in a much smaller space behind his current workshop, and when the opportunity arose to expand, he didn’t think twice about choosing Alemlube to grow with him in the newer, larger area. From the quality components to the large-diameter lifting pads, it’s clear why so many workshops, like Dynamic Automotive, are so impressed with not just the products, but the service they receive from the Alemlube team.

Blundstone’s UNISEX ROTOFLEX® #8553 Safety Boots

THE ROTOFLEX #8553 safety boots offer premium stability while providing the freedom to move. They do all of this while being packed to the brim with a massive list of features that seamlessly come together to create a sophisticated work boot that looks as good as it performs, and let’s be honest, these are some pretty awesome-looking work boots.

Looks aside, it’s the new technology that make the #8553 so impactful. With inclusions like Blundstone’s new GripTek® HD sole (optimum grip and comfort), AirCell (airflow footbed), Fortalite® (compression-resistant composite safety toe cap), SoftCell® (comfort system) which encompasses Infinergy® by BASF (E-TPU super elastic energy foam) – it’s no wonder these boots feel and perform as well as they do.

The Blundstone range, in recent times, has led the industry in just what’s possible from a safety work boot in terms of comfort and performance. So, for this new RotoFlex range to impress as much as it has, it’s clear that Blundstone has no intention of taking its foot off the gas when it comes to creating new and improved performance through design, materials and Blundstone’s worldrenowned durability and performance.

TEST #2 COMPRESSION-RESISTANT SAFETY

It’s often a challenging balancing act for boot manufacturers to create the toe strength and safety required without limiting or restricting the toe movement. Still, it seems to be precisely what Blundstone has achieved with the #8553. “Replacing the steel toe cap with a composite toe seems like a great way to reduce the weight of a safety boot, and this composite toe caps holds strong under immense pressure, all while keeping its shape and without restricting toe movement. It is the freedom of movement of these boots which stands out to me as its clear and impressive feature,” said Jordy. •

Nathan was impressed. “These screwdrivers feel great in the hand,” he Phillips-headed. “The shape and texture of the grips promote comfort and control, allowing excellent power delivery. I used various-sized screws ranging from small to medium-sized Phillips screws, and the differentsized drivers performed extremely well.”

TEST #2 4 PIECE ERGO PLIER SET

This set is made up of the 180mm diagonal Cutting Plier, 150mm Long Nose Plier, the 259mm Water Pump Plier and the 180mm Combination Plier. All inclusions sport ergonomic dual-composite handles for user comfort, making them ideal for maintenance, repairs, and installations for many trades.

The high-leverage feature requires less effort and reduces fatigue. “As a plumber, pliers are an

essential tool for many tasks,” piped up Purlly. “Long-nose pliers are perfect for reaching washers and other hard-to-reach items. I would think it’s pretty safe to say a good set of long-nose pliers and combination or multi-grip pliers are an absolute must for all self-respecting tradies.

“Again, it’s the grip and leverage of these hand tools, along with the overall build quality and materials used, that marks these pliers as standout products. You can feel the quality in every pair.”

TEST #1 COMFORT

We enlisted the help of talented tradie Beau Ireland from LVD Builders.

Beau is in the middle of an epic build, already two years in after a substantial excavation process. He’s been a qualified chippy for six years and with his busy schedule, generally goes through around four pairs of boots per year.

“I’ve got to say these DEWALT APEX PROComforts are a magnificent work boot,” said Beau, speaking plainly. “They are probably the most comfortable boots I’ve experienced right from the first wear. You can feel the technology that makes this boot work exceptionally well from the comfort and stability factor.”

TEST #2 PROTECTION

When it comes to protection, this boot is heavily specced up.

Beau nailed it when he said, “There’s a lot going on from a safety perspective.”

“The composite steel toe protection

not only keeps your toes well protected,” he tacked on, “but the TPU bump guide also adds to the longevity of the boot. I find this is where most of my other brand boots eventually fail.

“You can feel the quality of the full-grain nubuck leather, heavy-duty YKK side zip and securing strap. I have stopped purchasing work boots that don’t feel up to standard in these areas as they just don’t last, but I’m happy to say the DEWALT’s tick all the boxes. You can feel and see the overall quality of these boots.”

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY Considering the additional depth of these work boots, things like the anti-slip outsole, with the highest-rated SRC and high-heat resistance outsole up to 300°C, you have to appreciate the quality of the DEWALT. Even if you’re a loyal supporter of another brand, try these babies on and you’ll be forced to admit they are right up there in terms of the best safety work boots available in Australia today.

2 Beau was loving the protection, comfort and safety.

BizCover’s Cyber Liability Insurance

→ With tradies’ days getting busier and busier, BizCover has set up and succeeded in simplifying the insurance process.

How BizCover can give you peace of mind when it comes to cyber security.

WITH SO MANY large-scale data breaches in the media, it’s easy to think hackers are only focused on the big end of town. But unfortunately, every business with an online presence, including your tradie business, is at risk of a cyber attack. With an attack occurring every 7 minutes (ACSC Annual Cyber Threat Report 2021-2022), now might be the time to bite the bullet and get the right cover for your business.

Even with the latest software updates and virus busters, having a Cyber Liability insurance policy is still an excellent idea.

In a nutshell, your reputation and your customer data is sacred; if you don’t protect it, your business may be fed to the wolves or held for ransom.

Cyber Liability insurance* (pic 1) is designed to help protect your tradie business from claims and support your profitability in the event of a cyber breach or attack. Costs associated with defending a cyber claim are also covered. Examples of the types of risks Cyber Liability insurance can assist with are inadvertent loss or release of customer personal information, cyber-crime, cyber extortion/ransomware and business interruption due to a cyber event.

Aside from Cyber Liability insurance

BizCover offers multiple business insurance options tailored towards tradies from a great range of trusted Aussie insurers – with easy and instant cover online. For tradies on the go, you can sit down at smoko and have a complete range of business insurance in place before it’s time to get back to work.

With a 25mm blade width and an impressive reach of 3.5 metres, the high-quality STANLEY Control-Lock tapes have been designed and built for strength, resilience and exceptional reach, making them the cat’s whiskers for use on the professional Australian job site.

The first eight centimetres of each blade have been treated with BladeArmor coating for optimum resistance to abrasion or breakage. This transparent coating reinforces that key area where most wear-and-tear damage normally occurs.

offer greater durability and lifespan.

TEST #1 COMFORT

For our testing purposes we had the 8m and 5m tapes on hand, and if the 8m is anything to go by, the 10m is also set to impress. Both measures felt great in the hand and worked exceptionally well. You’ll barely even notice one on your tool belt. The 5m in particular is a little pocket rocket. It almost looks a little toy-like until you pick it up and feel the quality of its build and components. It would be perfect for tradies who don’t like to

use tool belts at all, as they easily fit into a shorts’ pocket or clip to the waist of pants.

We visited a couple of different sites to test the Control-Lock tapes. The first was a site that had plasterboards up and was almost at finishingoff stage. The second site was all steel frames and concrete without any roof covering.

TEST #2 USABILITY AND READABILITY

Putting the Control-Lock tapes to use over the large steel-framed building site was a great test. The end hook held on exceptionally well over the long spans we measured. Over 6m distances, the 8m tape came into its own. The action of the extension and retraction was beautiful. Our various tradies who tested the tapes loved the size and feel of the performance. They felt great to hold and fit naturally into the hand. The finger brake worked well at stopping the end hook from coming in too hot and doing damage to either fingers or finished material like soft timbers or plasterboard.

As you first extend the first 8cm of the blade, you will notice the BladeArmor, which protects this critical section. It helps stop the blade splitting and adds to the life span of the tape. The double-sided blade print made it easy to read measurements in all situations and positions. It was a piece of cake to obtain precise readings in the outside and indoor low-light areas we tested. These tapes would be perfect for users who didn’t want or need the size, bulk, or weight of the STANLEY FATMAX® range, but still wanted the other features STANLEY is renowned for, like quality and durability.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

As part of STANLEY’s global sustainability pledge, the Control-Lock series packaging has been redesigned and uses an eco-friendly clip card that will significantly reduce the amount of plastic introduced to the waste stream. Across the range, this new packaging innovation will eliminate 20,900 pounds (9510kg) of PVC per year globally.

KINCROME’S LEVELS come in four popular sizes: 600mm, 900mm, 1250mm and 1800mm, each featuring three fixed vials, including the unique Verti-Site vial that can be read from the fronton view. This gives a clear line of sight through the face of the level. It’s ideal for use in confined spaces and reduces the need to face the side of the level when finding the actual plumb level. It’s a cool feature that uses two mirrors that reflect the vial, so even looking down from the top you can see the side angle as well, where typically you would need to be able to see the side of a traditional level.

The KINCROME range of levels features three fixed vials to read plumb, level and 45 degrees (45-degree vials are on Torpedo levels only), and precision-machined frames do an excellent job holding the Verti-Site front vials in place for accurate, precise readings.

For this Tradie Tough Test, The Tradie caught up with talented carpenter Patrick Jacobs, who instantly appreciated the grip, feel and accuracy of the Kincromes.

Pat Jacobs getting his eye on the bubble.

TEST #1 QUALITY AND FEEL

“These levels from Kincrome feel substantial from the first hold,” squeezed Patrick.

“They feel strong without being heavy, and even the Torpedo levels have a nice weight and balance. I have checked all the levels and used them across this job, and they are all reading true and spot on the money. We have installed some windows and sliding-door frames and enjoyed the feel of the Kincrome,” said Patrick.

TEST #2 VERTI-SITE VIAL

“Initially, I thought the Verti-Site vial might be a bit of a gimmick, but after putting it through its paces on a pile of plumb readings, it’s actually very cool,” levelled Patrick. “Typically you need to be able to see the side of the level to read the vial when doing plumb readings. That can be very difficult in tight or awkward positions. The Verti-Site vial

allows you to see straight through the top of the vial. The mirrored system clearly shows the plumb vial without having to rely on being able to see the side of the level at all. This clever system means you’re not craning your neck or having to twist around to get a clear read of the side of the level as you normally would,” shared Pat.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY KINCROME Torpedo levels are perfect for working in confined or tight areas. Their shorter size makes them very handy to carry in a tool belt or a pocket and an excellent option for aussie tradies looking for a reliable and precise level.

The Kincrome blue makes these levels look like the goods on-site. The shock-absorber end caps, robust build quality and bright vials produce an experience that tradies will appreciate on demanding worksites.

AEG

A HEAT GUN is one of those specialty tools that, for many tradies like pool plumber Paul Turner, gets him out of trouble when he needs it. When it comes to fixing bent or broken pipes and pool plumbing, a top-quality heat gun is required to get the job done, to both melt the adhesive as well as soften the pipe to remove and salvage speciality and hard to replace fittings for pool pumps and alike. The AEG’s Compact 18V

Heat Gun didn’t disappoint due to its cordless capabilities and 482-degree operating temp.

AEG’s 18V Compact Heat Gun (A18HGO) sports a 18V Electronically controlled heat element that provides rapid heat, reaching a max temp of 482 degree’s in less than 10 seconds. A guarded nozzle ensures this substantial rapid heat doesn’t damage work surfaces by offering increased protection. The unit has a reflector nozzle and a

→ Manipulating pvc pool plumbing like this is light work for the gun.

76 The Tradie - What tradies want.

1

concentrated nozzle for varied applications.

This unit from AEG is impressive with its lightweight and compact design. For end users like vinyl installers for car wraps and signs, who use heat guns most of the day, every day, the reduced weight is a significant factor in reducing fatigue or strains.

Not to mention the excellent access to hardto-reach areas for tradies working in tight spaces.

With this much heat, you don’t want any accidental start-ups. So AEG has added a built-in Lock-off/Lock-on Switch. This also improves user comfort when using for long periods as you don’t have to hold the trigger down the whole time.

A bright LED sight light provides excellent illumination of dark work areas, and in true AEG style, this product comes with a six-year product warranty when registered within the first 30 days of purchase.

For this test, we caught Paul Turner, who is a pool plumber and uses heat guns regularly, at least 3 or 4 times a week, as an emergency product with excellent results.

TEST #1 TURN UP THE HEAT.

For Paul’s work, the primary use for a heat gun is for heating PVC pool plumbing, which he either bends or manipulates when things have gotten a little twisted or broken. Having almost instant working heat is a big bonus and a time saver for Paul. He shared “I often end up in hard-to-reach areas where the pool plumbing has been mostly hidden from view. So having a small unit like this with the sight light is excellent for working in those conditions. Some of the 240V units I have used over the years are too strong and hot, and you can easily damage the material you are working on if you’re not paying attention. This unit provides a less intense amount of air, making it perfect for applications like heat shrinking cables and wires, drying glues, and working with signs and vinyl wraps. Electricians would love this for their delicate heat work.”

Paul continued “in saying that, you can see how

I’ve used it here today in bending conduit as well as melting the glue and salvaging pool pump fitting. These are large diameter fittings and the AEG Heat Gun has performed well to complete these heavier duty Heat Gun applications.”

TEST #2 COMPACT SIZE AND BUILD QUALITY

With other tools, claims of lightweight and compact construction often equate to poor or substandard build quality. This isn’t the case with this AEG 18V Compact Heat Gun. It is compact and lightweight, weighing in at 0.64 kg (without battery) but it still feels exceptionally well made and durable, which explains why AEG is still prepared to put a 6-year warranty behind this product. “I haven’t used many AEG products before, but if this gun is typical of what they produce, then the rest of the range is well worth a look and this heat gun feels extremely comfortable with the grip and design. The compact size is just what I need for the tight areas I often end up working on, and I can feel the quality of the build. It’s light but still feels solid and strong,” said Paul.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

This 18V Compact Heat Gun from AEG has punched well and truly above its weight. It’s turned out to be a bit of a pocket rocket. It has excellent ergonomics and plenty of heat, and come smoko if you want to give your sambo a bit of toasting or even melt your cheese on your lunchtime treat, you have the perfect tool for the job. The AEG will have the aroma of toasted sandwiches and melted cheese in the air in minutes. You have to love a multi-faceted worksite tool!

1 Not only does the AEG’s 18V gun bring the heat, the bright orange is a standout sight on the worksite.

2 Despite being incredibly lightweight and compact, the 18V Heat Gun has the build and feel of a premium heat gun.

3 In Paul’s line of work in pool plumbing, the 18V Heat Gun does the job effortlessly, and more importantly efficiently.

TRADIE TOUGH TESTS CHISELS Cold

BRAND Kango

A chisel for every task, and every material.

FOR TRADES needing to rip into tasks involving general demolition like removing tiles, breaking up masonry and even bringing down small walls, Kango’s range of SDS PLUS Chisels are ready to outperform your expectations with their industrialgrade steel design and self-sharpening tips.

For this Tradie Tough Test, we had three Kango Chisels on hand to test out at an excellent demo job on the rooftop of an apartment complex in Dee Why. With all the tiles, walls, screed bed and some slabs needing to come up for re-waterproofing and retiling on the entire roof area.

There were significant areas to test the 50mm x 250mm SDS Plus Self-Sharpening Angled Tiling Chisel, the 20mm x 250mm SDS Plus Self Sharpening Flat Chisel, and the 250mm SelfSharpening Pointed Chisel.

↑ Kangos’s chisel range comes with a variety of tools to suit your needs

Each of these chisels has a distinct purpose and design, and tradies looking for the power and performance of the SDS Plus range will appreciate the German engineering and build quality that has gone into these Chisels, which bring long-lasting performance on challenging Australian work sites.

For this test, we had Mick from EBRS put the

range through its paces with some great results as there were tiles, brickwork and cement, which all needed to come up with significant areas to use each of the chisels in their designed work application.

TEST #1 KANGO 50MM X 250MM TILE CHISEL

With no shortage of tiles to bring up, we decided to leave the larger floor tiles for the boys with the Jack Hammers. Instead, we opted for areas that would more suit the purpose of the AEG SDS Plus Hammer Drill. We Chiselled up skirting tiles and tiles on elevated platforms and other similar areas. Mick shared, “The Tile Chisel performed exceptionally well. It was sharp and strong, and the proof for me was when I inspected the tip of the Chisel after using it for 30 minutes. Other than showing a few minor scrapes and scratches, it was in new condition. The edge wasn’t dulled or rounded at all. “

TEST #2 20MM X 250MM FLAT CHISEL

Designed and constructed to demolish and clean surface concrete and masonry, this little powerhouse is sharp and built from world-class

78 The Tradie - What
tradies want.
Kango’s SDS PLUS Chisel Range

Alloy, with a strengthening heat treatment process thrown in for good measure. Mick shared, “The Flat Chisel was a real little performer, with its narrow width of 20mm making it ideal for getting into those hard-to-reach areas, where a wider blade simply won’t fit. “The 20mm x 250mm Self Sharpening Flat Chisel for me would be my go-to for more detailed areas when breaking up slabs and needing to get in around and under posts or needing to clear areas in and around electrical or plumbing that has been rendered over or run through brick or block work. The extra control delivered by the chisel edge was impressive,” said Mick.

TEST #3 250MM POINTED CHISEL

The reinforced edges of the 250mm Pointed Chisel make it perfect for breaking off large chunks of material and getting into tight areas where even the 20mm Flat Chisel wouldn’t fit. Mick shared, “We hit some chunky section of the slab with this that the larger hammers were working on with some great results. I can see this being perfect for breaking up and working on brick, blocks and concrete. But I also enjoyed using the Pointed Chisel by removing the tile and concrete that sat under

3

bent the posts, this SDS set-up was the perfect tool to complete that task. As a tradie regularly working in demolition phases, owning not only an SDS Rotary Hammer but at least these 3 Kango bits would be an absolute must moving forward.”

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

These Kango Chisels are all about build quality and world-class alloys to produce this self-sharpening range of SDS Chisels. Then when you take into account Kangos reinforced edges to reduce breakages and fractures, you have some impressive demolition chisels that are raring to go. •

1 Mick using the 20mm Flat Chisel to break up a tile and concrete platform.

Built for purpose

With a robust and responsive Peugeot 2.0L HDi turbo diesel engine, Expert Van delivers a powerful, fuel-efficient performance. Choose the hands-on sixspeed manual transmission, or zip between locations effortlessly with the eight-speed automatic.

Having a big day and need some extra hands on-board? No problem. The Expert van conveniently sits three people upfront in comfort, and Peugeot’s ergonomic i-CockpitTM layout, with seamless smartphone connectivity and intuitively positioned dials, ensures maximum comfort for everyone.

Fast, easy access, heavy-duty capacity, and the

manoeuvrability of a robust, mid-size van with the flexibility to take on any job – that’s what the Expert Van is all about.

Safety

Quick and easy accessibility is everything when you’re busy, so having 180-degree-opening swing doors at the back and dual sliding doors on most models, with a luxurious 6.1 cubic metres of cargo space and a 1.4-tonne payload, is a tradie’s dream.

A true extension of your business, Peugeot Expert Van is also a workshop, storage unit, office, meeting space and lunchroom – thanks to the smart Moduwork mobile-office system available on premium models. This system also allows for flexible cargo configurations, so you can change the set up to suit the gear you need each day – including carrying items up to 4024mm long.

Safety is paramount, of course, and Peugeot’s Expert Van boasts Electronic Stability Control, Emergency Braking Assistance, Driver Attention Alert and a wide-view reverse camera and sensors as standard. Autonomous Emergency Braking and Speed Sign Detection are also available, plus, every van comes with a five-year/200,000km warranty and five-year roadside assistance.

↑ Roomy, and with an amazing paylod, the Peugeot Expert Van is ideal for getting a day’s work done.

There’s something satisfying about seeing a classic car restored, especially when you had a hand in its restoration. That was the case for Warren & Brown Tools at the Motorclassica where the power of its Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench was on full display.

John Sanders had been restoring a 1972 Renault 12 Gordini Coupe/ Sedan/African Safari Rally Spec, with his go-to tool the unrivalled WB Tools Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench.

The car debuted in 1972 for Australia and Renault at the East African Safari Rally. Since its rugged savannah-racing days, John has spent 42 years putting it through a bare-shell restoration.

John said through that time, it was the WB Tools Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench that helped him rejuvenate the exterior and add some firepower under the hood in the form of a Renault Gordini 807-G uprated engine.

“When it comes to torque wrenches it’s simple, beamed John. “Warren & Brown is the way to go.”

Motorheads have been using WBT torque wrenches for decades due to their unbeaten precision of +/-2 per cent and incredible shelf life.

WBT marketing co-ordinator Josh Drozdek met John Sanders and his awesome 1972 Renault 12 Gordini Coupe.

World’s strongest drill*

Be the envy of the worksite.

The Bosch GSB 18V-150 C Professional is a clever impact drill/ driver which offers unrivalled power and control. It’s ideal for screwing, drilling, and impact-drilling tasks, and enables an extremely fast working process. That’s thanks to exceptionally powerful ProCORE18V batteries and a brushless motor with BITURBO technology.

While offering a maximum torque of 150Nm, the GSB 18V-150 C Professional’s ingenious Electronic Angle Detection always ensures the right angle of long screws, and its switchable KickBack Control for working with hole saws reduces the risk of sudden rotational-torque reaction in a bindup scenario.

A metal drill chuck and metal gearbox make the Bosch extremely reliable and robust any time it really matters, and it’s compatible with all Bosch Professional 18V batteries

and chargers (professional 18V system). For those needing maximum power, slide on a ProCORE18V ≥ 8.0Ah.
