Trenchless bounces back in WA

As COVID-19 continues to cause disruptions to states and their economies, infrastructure developments becomes increasingly important to drive economic recovery. As such, Western Australia has seen progress on many public sector infrastructure projects over the last few months in the water and transport sectors.

Pipes for Perth Pipes for Perth is Water Corporation’s ongoing project to improve the security and reliability of Perth’s water supply. Under the program, works to replace historic pipelines supplying drinking water to East Fremantle, Palmyra and Bicton recently commenced, with completion anticipated for mid-2022.

The pipeline has been supplying the regions for nearly a century, with the oldest section first laid in 1923. The Pipes for Perth program has replaced over 200 km of water mains across the metropolitan area since 2016.

Water Corporation general manager of assets planning and delivery Evan Hambleton said that by proactively replacing these assets, the utility could safeguard against future leaks and bursts, in turn helping to avoid unplanned interruptions.

New mains for Perth’s first reservoir The WA Waste Minister announced upgrades to replace water mains at the historic Kaarta Gar-up reservoir as part of a state-wide investment in renewing water infrastructure. The reservoir was constructed in 1891 as Perth’s first reservoir, supplying water to the CBD and western suburbs.

The McGowan Government has dedicated $7.7 million to upgrading and replacing water mains for Perth’s historic reservoir at Kaarta Gar-up (Mount Eliza) in Kings Park. Works involve replacing two ageing water pipe inlets, one of which is 94 years old, and the construction of a new regulating valve building, valve pit, and valve pit wall. The project is expected to be complete by early-2022.

METRONET reaches final stages The METRONET project has entered its final stages. During November, works began to relocate a sewer pressure main at the New Bayswater Station, while bulk earth works have charged ahead at Lakelands Station for the Thornlie-Cockburn link. Work has also started on the tunnel where the new Morley-Ellenbrook line will divert from the existing Midland Line.

With around 72 km of new passenger rail with 18 new stations, the METRONET will be the single largest investment in public transport Perth has ever seen once completed.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said the METRONET is important not only for the thousands of jobs it offers during construction phase, but for the jobs it will secure into the future as local areas develop over time.

Water infrastructure for West Bullsbrook The Morrison-Joyce government has delivered a plan for the provision of a long-term, sustainable water supply to the residents of West Bullsbrook, north of Perth.

The state and federal governments have been working together to deliver a strategy to connect West Bullsbrook properties to town water. The installation scheme is still currently in its planning phase.

WA Water Awards The Australian Water Association annual awards highlight the outstanding work by individuals and organisations in the water industry.

The WA Water Awards were held in late October, recognising the contribution of the association’s members for their leadership, innovative research, programs and infrastructure projects.

The association’s chief executive officer Corinne Cheeseman congratulated all the finalists and winners, noting their outstanding achievements and significant contributions. “AWA’s Water Awards recognise the important and ground-breaking work our members do for the water sector and for their communities,” Cheeseman said.

“The WA Water Award finalists and winners showcase the range of work being done collaboratively across the sector, with winners from utilities, universities and the public sector – a reflection of our members’ collective contribution towards our sustainable water future.”

Water Corporation received the regional Infrastructure Project Innovation Award for its work on the Vasse Diversion Drain Upgrade Project. The metropolitan award equivalent went to Arbaqua for its Wharf Street Basin Next Generation Community Park Project.

Water professional of the year went to director at Tessele Consultants Dr Fabiana Tessele for her outstanding contribution to water and wastewater projects.

New IWA chairperson and board members announced Infrastructure WA (IWA) provides expert advice and assistance to the state government on infrastructure matters, to drive investment and support jobs. In the last couple of months, the IWA board has seen a significant reshuffle.

Nicole Lockwood has been made WA’s new Infrastructure Board chairperson while inaugural member Terry Agnew has been appointed deputy chairperson. Rebecca Tomkinson, current chief executive officer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in WA, has been appointed as a new board member. All positions were effective from October this year and will run until 23 July 2024.

“I look forward to receiving the final strategy which will ensure that strategic infrastructure creates jobs and delivers social, economic and environmental outcomes for all Western Australians,” Premier Mark McGowan said.

On 8 -11 March 2022, the No-Dig Down Under Conference and Exhibition is coming to the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney.

Following on from the successful event held in September 2019 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and due to overwhelming support from sponsors, exhibitors, and delegates, No-Dig Down Under is back.

No-Dig Down Under is the southern hemisphere’s only large-scale conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology. The event has grown over the years to become the second-largest no-dig technology event in the world and is now considered a ‘must-attend’ for all industry professionals.

Organised in partnership with the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology (ASTT), the event will feature a world-class conference program, with three conference streams all focused on different aspects of the industry, training courses on trenchless methods presented by industry leaders, and an exhibition extending over 4,500 square metres and featuring exhibitors from all sectors.

There will be three sponsored social functions, including the prestigious ASTT Gala Dinner and Awards Evening, providing attendees with networking opportunities in a variety of settings with industry professionals.

Why should you attend No-Dig Down Under 2022?

The world-class conference program will show you how leading utilities are using no-dig methods Asset owners play a vital role in the application of trenchless technology, which is why the conference program largely consists of Australia and New Zealand’s leading utilities, operators, and municipalities, including Gold Coast City Council, Yarra Valley Water, APA Group, and Dial Before You Dig.

The conference program also includes presentations on research and education into trenchless technologies.

See the latest trenchless technology at the exhibition The exhibition will feature the world’s leading suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers of the latest trenchless solutions for the installation, rehabilitation, and location of underground infrastructure assets.

Many of the exhibition stalls will be presenting practical demonstrations of their equipment, which is an important opportunity to see the company’s products in action.

In 2019, more than 1,500 leaders and decision-makers passed through the exhibition, including delegates and trade visitors, so you know that what’s on exhibit is worth a visit!

Get networking at the three social functions No-Dig Down Under will feature three social functions, providing networking opportunities in a variety of different atmospheres.

On the evening of Tuesday 8 March, the exhibition will officially open with a ceremony at the ICC, sponsored by Herrenknecht.

The opening is an opportunity to get a first glimpse of the exhibition hall and speak to exhibitors about their products and services before the general public the following morning.

The Networking Reception on Wednesday 9 March, sponsored by Vermeer, is a chance for delegates to relax and unwind after a few busy days. This years’ event will take place on board a Captain Cook Cruise departing from King Street Wharf - easy walking distance from ICC Sydney. Sail into the evening with this cruise around Sydney Harbour.

The final evening boasts the ASTT Gala Dinner and Awards Evening. This formal event – sponsored by Bothar Boring & Tunnelling – celebrates the Australasian trenchless industry’s achievements from the past two years.

Full conference registrations include access to these functions’, otherwise, tickets can be purchased separately on the No-Dig Down Under website.

Increase your knowledge of trenchless technology by attending a training course In 2022, No-Dig Down Under will feature three training courses covering Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), Sewer Laterals and New Installations. The training courses will be presented by international leaders of their respective fields.

Originally developed by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), the ASTT has licensed the training courses and adapted the material for Australasian audiences. The courses are considered the global industry standard for trenchless technology education.

Registrations for No-Dig Down Under are now open, and the ASTT also has 10 utility and council scholarships available for attendance at No-Dig Down Under 2022. The scholarships allow key members of Australasian utilities and councils to attend the event with reduced costs and aims to bring more employees from these organisations to the event, thereby increasing the knowledge of trenchless technology.
