elcome to the December edition of Trenchless Australasia! Last edition, with Melbourne amid Stage 4 lockdowns, I expressed my disappointment at having to continually discuss COVID-19 first, and the rest of the industry second. Although I’m resigned to the fact that the virus is here to stay for a long while yet, I’m happy to be writing this at a time when Victoria has begun to emerge from its strong restrictions into a world where our friends and family are more accessible and many people can finally get back to work. Not being the overly emotional type, you are unlikely to find me crying with joy as I enter a Kmart for the first time in months as some on the news were reported doing, but I am pleased to be able to revisit simple pleasures like eating at a restaurant or drinking at a bar. From an industry perspective, it's good to see so much great trenchless work continuing throughout the pandemic. On page 26, as part of our regional feature on Victoria, you can find interviews I conducted with Melbourne utilities City West Water and Yarra Valley Water about the impact COVID-19 has had on this year’s work schedule. One thing both groups acknowledged was many of the on and offsite changes brought about by the pandemic would now stick around for the long term, leading to an increase in safety across the board. Hopefully, this propensity to learn and improve extends beyond just this industry, and Australia in its entirety can avoid having to return to a hard lockdown at any point in the future.
Outside of our regional focus, I am pleased to say the rest of the this edition is full of excellent trenchless content, including features on utility location and ground penetrating radar (GPR), rehabilitation and repair, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and much more. It would also be remiss of me not to mention that No-Dig Down Under 2021 is now less than one year away, so it really is time to start planning your attendance. Next year’s edition will be held on 5-8 October 2021 at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, New South Wales, and is expected to draw more than 1,500 attendees and more than 100 exhibitors. For those who have never attended, the event includes a range of trenchless training courses and a technical program containing presentations from international and domestic trenchless technology experts, as well as a 4,500 m2 exhibition hall full of industry leading equipment and service providers.. I highly encourage all readers to try and attend in some capacity as the wealth of trenchless information on offer in one place is something you won’t find at any other event in Australia. Lastly, with the year drawing to a close, I would like to thank all those who have continued to support Trenchless Australasia throughout what has been a very testing 12 months. It is great to see the industry thriving, even under difficult circumstances, and we’re excited to continue delivering informative content to our audience. See you in 2021.

elcome to the final edition of Trenchless Australasia for 2020! On reflection of the year that has just passed by in a blink of an eye, I drew some inspiration from the Robert Zemeckis film Cast Away. The current pandemic and rollercoaster ride of isolation at a personal, industry, state and international level feels very much like being stuck on an island (which we literally are!) with uncertainty of what life will be like once it is over. Tom Hanks’ character says “I know what I have to do now, I’ve got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?” This quote gives us hope and reminds us that the current situation will pass, and we will soon be able to enjoy the freedom of movement once again. As previously reported, all planned face-to-face events this year have been deferred until greater clarity is available around mass meetings of people and travel restrictions within cities, between states and overseas have been lifted. The ASTT series of webinars, designed to provide free and quick presentations to our members, has continued throughout this quarter. Attendance has varied based on the subject matter; however, lots of positive feedback has been received. The most recent edition in October outlined the ASTT Microtunnelling guidelines and was presented by Jim Shooter. Another upcoming initiative the ASTT has sponsored is a carbon calculator. Interest Group that has been working hard to develop this initiative is about to finalise their work and announce this initiative formally. I’m looking forward to learning more about this exciting initiative and I’m confident it will make a major contribution to the industry and our members as a whole. Stay tuned for more! Planning for next year’s No-Dig Down Under, the ASTT’s biennial conference and exhibition is progressing well. Our flagship event will be held in Sydney on 5-8 October 2021 and the theme of the event is Building Sustainable Futures. This event (organised by Great Southern Press, the publisher of Trenchless Australasia), has grown to be one of the largest dedicated trenchless technology events in the world, recognised globally as a leading forum for the discussion of the latest international developments. You can find out more about the event at nodigdownunder.com I urge you all to start thinking about some of your projects that will no doubt make great presentations. I look forward to working closely with the conference organising committee to develop another full and informative conference program. Stay tuned for more updates within the magazine and online. ASTT webinars As reported in the September issue, on 23 July 2020, we undertook our first webinar. Despite a few hiccups we have now successfully held five webinars and at this stage these will
continue, at least until the COVID-19 virus is well and truly under control. If you missed out on watching any of the webinars, you can view the past editions on the ASTT website – www.astt.com.au/webinars/ We are seeking nominations for webinar presentations for 2021, so if you are interested, please submit your name and the topic and you will be contacted regarding dates etc. We would also love to hear from you regarding what you would like the content of our future webinars to be, so please get in contact with suggestions. Strategic Plan update The initiatives outlined in the Strategic Plan continue to be progressed. Once again at the time of preparing this report, I can inform readers that the following is being worked on to enhance membership value: • Our newly appointed Strategic Planning Consultant, C7EVEN, has begun work on revamping our website to make it more beneficial for the members. It will include a general area that anyone can visit and a specific members area that will require a member login to gain access to. Areas like access to past minutes of meetings, past conference proceedings, NUCA Tag, Members Directory, Carbon Calculator, Guidelines and Standards etc will now only be available to the members. This change is a result of the work undertaken to enhance membership value. • We have also undertaken a survey of our members to look at scoping the development of a tertiary level training course for trenchless technology professionals. The idea is to develop a curriculum that caters to the various specialisations within the trenchless technology discipline. The survey was developed to better understand the needs and expectations of industry partners. • Work will continue with Standards Australia to consider widening the scope of AS/NZS 2566 designing of pipe liners.

ASTT COUNCILLOR REPORTS
Queensland Ben Crosby The last quarter in the trenchless industry remains to be busy both on a national and international level, with clients continuing to rehabilitate and install new utility infrastructure despite the new COVID-19 world. Our Queensland Trenchless Networking and Presentation Seminars are going well. Contact me at bencrosby@bamser.com.au if you are interested in speaking, sponsoring orattending one of these in the near future. Although the in-person ASTT seminars are on-hold due to COVID-19, the ASTT has continued holding monthly webinars. Please visit this link for more information: www.astt.com.au/webinars/ How about joining the ASTT as a corporate or individual member? The benefits are impressive and the access to the network makes it a very worthwhile proposition. Again, please contact me to discuss and gain more information.
New Zealand Blair Telfer I hope this finds everyone fit and healthy, both physically and mentally. Central government stimulus funding aimed at infrastructure appears to have allowed our industry to recover faster than many others. I hope this is true of whatever business you may be involved with. This has also allowed a number of our very large trenchless projects to continue with the community benefits they bring, which is good news for us all. Whilst face to face events are now starting to be planned, such as WaterNZ, I think that now we have seen the value of virtual training formats, webinars etc., and these will continue to grow in both popularity and quality. I urge you all to get involved with them, as either a presenter or attendee. Stay well, stay safe and I hope to see some of you at WaterNZ.

It has been quite a quarter in NSW infrastructure, with the Federal Government's commitment to fast-track $2.7 billion on state infrastructure returning confidence to the market. This infrastructure lead recovery, along with incentives for asset right offs, and brings optimism to asset owners, constructors and suppliers moving forward. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, this quarter saw the opening of the $3 billion NorthConnex, the halfway mark for the M4-M5 tunnelling project WestConnex and the progress of the Metro Tunnel works continuing showing the resilience of the trenchless industry to handle these challenges. As the year comes to an end, planning is underway for the 2021 No-Dig Down Under event in Sydney. I would encourage all NSW members to get involved in the planning and participation our showcase event. I wish all members a happy and safe end of year and look forward to the promise of a new year of success for all.
Water Corporation ROI for preferred supplier for sewer relining works In September 2020, the Water Corporation of WA invited organisations with suitable experience, capability and capacity to submit a Registration of Interest for the Sewer Relining Works. A successful organisation would be invited to enter into a preferred supplier agreement to provide sewer relining works for an agreed term period to the corporation. Recently announced WA Budget to provide infrastructure spending The recently announced budget by the WA Government followed the Federal Budget, with proposed higher spending on local infrastructure. 2020-21 Budget highlights • $354.5 million for the soon to be completed Forrestfield-Airport Link project. • $275.3 million for 246 locally made railcars and the local assembly and manufacturing facility at Bellevue. • $100 million to install Smart Freeway technology on the Mitchell Freeway from Joondalup to the city. • $195 million for the Thornlie Cockburn Link, Perth’s first east-west rail connection. • $184.7 million for the Yanchep Rail Extension, with three new train stations. • $144.6 million for removal of level crossings, including the under-way Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal Project and early works for three others on the Armadale Line. • $207.2 million for other projects like the Morley Ellenbrook Line, Byford Rail Extension and Midland Station project. • $92.3 million for the construction of the new Bayswater Station, the first stage of the Morley Ellenbrook Line. • $31.5 million to deliver a multi-storey car park at Mandurah Station. • $16.3 million to help plan and build Lakelands Station. It is hoped that the proposed infrastructure spending will provide increased opportunities for trenchless technology operators involved in the works.
South Australia Adam Russo As one part of our $1.6 billion four-year capital works program, we have begun a targeted renewal of wastewater mains across the state, which in 2020-21 includes the rehabilitation of around 5 km of reticulated main, using a sewer lining method, and the renewal of a critical 1,300 mm diameter trunk main along Regency Road in Adelaide’s inner north. We are also supporting progress of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Gawler Rail Electrification project by determining which works are required on the adjacent Adelaide wastewater trunk main.

Carbon Calculator ready to launch The ASTT’s SIG has been steadily advancing its creation of a Carbon Calculator to encourage trenchless contractors, operators and asset owners to lower carbon emissions and make informed decisions on infrastructure planning and renewals versus traditional methods. After months of development, the tool is now ready for launch and implementation into the market.
T
he ASTT’s Special Interest Group (SIG) is comprised of leading industry professionals who have been working to create a solution that supports the mitigation of climate change impacts. The Carbon Calculator will use carbon as a measure for efficiency and encourage trenchless industry workers to innovate and improve emissions results. SIG member and Water BD Specialist Mark Trembath says the group has now selected Mott MacDonald as a consultant on the tool due to the company’s experience in greenhouse gas emissions reduction and a demonstrated familiarity in other carbon calculators. “The Carbon Calculator is now finalised, and we are now in the marketing and launch phase,” says Mr Trembath.
“The SIG has hand-selected a group of asset owners from water utilities to participate in a three-month trial. We will have regular feedback sessions with the trial participants during the trial in order to make adjustments or changes if needed for this important environmental tool. “Once we are satisfied with the Carbon Calculator tool, we will then launch it to the market with several different marketing strategies.” The SIG hopes to have the trial period finalised by the end of Q1 2021, after that, Mr Trembath says the tool’s primary aim will be to assist asset owners to make informed environmental decisions when planning infrastructure. “Other users and significant beneficiaries will be engineering consultants and contractors,” he says.
20 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
“This tool will allow them to place greenhouse gas emissions and reductions front and centre of their bids and pitches to achieve commercial success. The SIG plan to meet over the next 12 months after its launched to monitor its usage and feedback and make appropriate changes where necessary.” In addition to the SIG’s continued promotion of the Carbon Calculator, dedicated sessions on the tool are planned for next year’s No Dig Down Under event – the largest conference and exhibition dedicated to trenchless technology in the southern hemisphere.

Trenchless Sales opens NSW branch Queensland-based Trenchless Sales has opened its new branch in Moorebank, New South Wales for business after months of planning, allowing its 25 years of trenchless industry experience to be further accessible across the country. The NSW branch will be managed by Steve Mercer, who has more than 15 years of experience in the drilling industry and can assist with various trenchless needs. The company shared the news on social media, saying customers should stop by the new office and “ask Steve to shout a coffee while discussing your requirements”. The new office is located at Unit 1, 9 Greenhills Road, Moorebank.
New WSAA code dubbed “a win” VAPAR CEO and Co-Founder Amanda Siqueira says the release of Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) WSA 052020 Conduit Inspection Reporting Code of Australia Version 4.1 is “a win for asset owners”. The recently released code focuses on internal asset condition assessment of conduits including sewers, sanitary and stormwater drains as well as maintenance structures like manholes. The code will replace Version 3.1 of the third edition, published in 2013, and will focus on improving efficiency of reporting through code changes and software requirements. Ms Siqueira says the code it will provide improvements in the segmentation and granularity of data, which will lead to greater decision-making power for asset owners as more information will be captured during inspections. It also means asset owners can be sure main conduit condition scores will no longer be escalated by issues related to property owner connections.
Rob Carr wins excellence award” The Rob Carr Western Australian Operations Team has been awarded the 2020 CCF WA Earth Award for Project Excellence in Civil Construction. Sharing the news on social media, Rob Carr congratulated its team, led by Barry Crowley and Paul Lee, which won the award in the $5-10 million project value category. “The team recently delivered the very successful Dunsborough Infill Sewerage Project Sections 5C & 9A,” says Rob Carr. The project was part of Water Corporation’s Infill Sewerage Program and consisted of more than 5.2 km of gravity sewer constructed by microtunnelling and conventional techniques. Rob Carr also completed 36 access chambers, 41 maintenance shafts, 215 property connections, 1.5 km of pressure main pipelines by horizontal directional drilling and two Type 40 pump stations. The company says it completed all works while minimising impact to the local community and environment. 22 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA December 2020

Water corporations combine for new entity Melbourne utilities City West Water (CWW) and Western Water (WW) will integrate to form a new water provider, titled Greater Western Water. The Victorian Government says the new entity will have the financial resources and staff to cope with the region’s population growth and demand for new infrastructure, while household water bills would also be reduced. The integration will commence on 1 July 2021 and will be overseen by an independent chair and board members from both CWW and WW. The state government says no jobs will be lost in the transition and communities currently served by WW will have a greater access to Melbourne’s water system, while Victorian Minister for Water Lisa Neville adds the integration will lead to better services and greater water security.

Gippsland Water exec named in Top 50
Water New Zealand announces new President
Gippsland Water Managing Director Sarah Cumming has been named in the annual Top 50 Public Sector Women (Victoria) awards. Awarded by the Institute of Public Administration Association, Ms Cummings said it was humbling to be acknowledged alongside many of her female colleagues and friends. In 2017, Ms Cumming was chosen to lead Gippsland Water following a series of successful senior posts in local and federal government. Ms Cumming says she hopes winning the award would inspire other women in regional areas to aspire to senior leadership positions, and believes that while strong progress is being made, there is still a great deal of work to be done before achieving “gender equality at the executive level in the public sector”. This year marked the fourth annual Top 50 Public Sector Women (Victoria) awards.
Coates Hire wins Sydney Water contract
At its 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM), Water New Zealand announced board member Helen Atkins has been appointed President to replace Kelvin Hill, who has held the position for the past two years. An environmental and public lawyer, Ms Atkins has been a board member of Water New Zealand for the past six years and has also provided legal comment and advice for its publications for many years. Ms Atkins has spent the past year preparing to take up the new leadership position and says she’s looking forward to taking on this role at a time when the reforms provide a real opportunity for the sector, and expects new legislation and the Water Services Bill will be a dominant presence throughout her presidency. Water New Zealand thanked Mr Hill for his contribution to the New Zealand water sector and also announced its two new board members, being Dr Deborah Lind and Tim Gibson.
TBM in place for major upgrade
The hiring solutions company has received a three-year shared purchasing (SP) dry hire contract as part of Sydney Water’s ‘Partnering for Success’ (P4S) procurement strategy. The SP contract is the first to be signed under the P4S procurement strategy and will ensure Coates Hire supplies pumps and fluid management, traffic management and power generation solutions to Sydney Water. Sydney Water will also have access to Coates Hire’s full range of quality plant and general hire equipment as part of the agreement. Sydney Water Head of Procurement Xavier Decomps says the contract represents a significant milestone and the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two groups. “This shared purchasing approach will develop deeper relationships between Sydney Water and its RDC partners, and facilitate a consistent, transparent and controlled way of sharing information about goods and services.” Delivery commenced in October for the supply of plant equipment and general hire to Sydney Water’s Networks Services and its three Regional Delivery Consortia.
Melbourne Water says a major Melbourne sewer will receive an essential upgrade, with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) expected to begin the work early next year. The Hobsons Bay Main Sewer, originally built in the 1960s, is responsible for carrying more than 30 per cent of the city’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plant. The utility will undertake the essential upgrade to boost the sewer’s capacity and ensure the reliability of the city’s sewerage service for the next century. Melbourne Water General Manager Major Project Delivery Eamonn Kelly says the 2.1 m diameter reinforced pipe that can handle flows of up to 7,700 L/second would be upgraded, while a new sewer main will ensure wastewater flows are diverted during the works. Mr Kelly adds the duplicate sewer main will allow this upgrade to be completed safely and efficiently. The project will see two shafts up to 30 m deep constructed on either side of the Yarra River and a TBM used to construct the new main.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a change to many Australian’s working lives and, as Melbourne became the city with the longest and strictest lockdowns in the country, its utilities were forced to adapt to the changing conditions to continue work necessary to the city’s liveability. Trenchless Australasia spoke to both City West Water and Yarra Valley Water about a challenging and different year, and the necessary shifts in working practices.
A
lthough many Australians have been forced to stay home for much of the year, the work of water utilities has remained permitted throughout Victoria, even as Melbourne’s Stage 4 lockdowns persisted for months. Servicing inner Melbourne and the western suburbs, City West Water (CWW) has continued delivering its major works program, including a significant sewer upgrade project along Lonsdale Street in the CBD and the recently completed renewal of a watermain in Canning Street, Carlton. For Yarra Valley Water (YVW), Melbourne’s largest water corporation servicing the city’s east, works have been ongoing on the $80 million, 9 km Lockerbie Main Sewer in Donnybrook and Beveridge along with other multi-million-dollar network upgrades.
Both groups have been able to continue working this year, but worksites look very different in 2020 compared to 2019. “We have deferred a small number of projects during Stage 4 lockdown, but overall, our program has largely continued, albeit in a very different way,” says CWW GM of Infrastructure and Delivery Amanda Smith. “We’ve implemented lots of additional precautions so we can continue to deliver work safely. We’ve worked really closely with our delivery partners, updated a number of work practices and people are working very differently onsite, such as social distancing and hygiene practices, wearing face-masks, temperature testing onsite, setting up the means to trace in the event individuals might need to be tested and site movements have been minimised as well,” says Ms Smith.
"We’ve done a lot of work looking across the supply chain, because we do use delivery partners who bring in specialists from different parts of the country or the state. “But also looking at supply chain risks – where there’s been uncertainty around border closures, for example we’ve had some pipes that start off in Queensland and they end up down in South Australia to get all the components built in, and we’ve had to put in place some contingency measures to manage those supply chain risks for projects.” YVW General Manager of Growth Futures Chris Brace tells of similar challenges and says the group’s delivery partners have been “exemplary” in reacting to the evolving government directives. “Where our works include working on customer properties, such as new sewerage

network installations, we have deferred the on-property element or only undertaken works that are critical to rectifying environmental and public health risks,” he says. “Where these works continued, we have worked with our partners to limit staff movement between sites to a bare minimum, and all necessary customer interactions have been undertaken via virtual or remote means. “As the situation has been progressing quite rapidly, we have developed a very effective rhythm to this response. We have had a dedicated team managing our COVID response which has been particularly effective in ensuring the rapid rollout of new requirements and ensuring consistency.” Mr Brace says an increased use of technology has paid dividends onsite during the pandemic, a trend that is likely to continue into the future. “We have taken advantage of technology to minimise our presence and that of our partners onsite without impacting project delivery,” he says. “This has included initiatives like completing remote audits via video conferencing and producing 3D photo montages for tender
briefings and to support design work, instead of undertaking site visits. “The innovations that we have implemented during the pandemic relating to the increased use of virtual technology for project management, design and auditing will likely remain in place once we have reached ‘COVID normal’.” Ms Smith says CWW has also been proactive about risk assessment and COVID management, implementing similar technology to ensure onsite safety. “We’ve done remote safety walks onsite using technology and we even brought our executive team into those conversations and doing some remote field safety walks. And we’ve used augmented reality to commission one of our stormwater harvesting schemes. “These are things we won’t be putting back on the shelf once the pandemic ends. We've got a very detailed overview of how we’re managing risk on a day-to-day basis. “We’ve had to bring in additional support and help and we’re also hearing that from our delivery partners, that in having to do all these risk assessments it actually requires more

resources. So, while we may have less people physically onsite, they’re still doing work but they’re just doing it differently.” Both CWW and YVW credited the strong relationships and proactive engagement with delivery partners as a key factor in the ongoing successful delivery of projects, with the development, construction and water industries continuing to work together under challenging circumstances. As usual, a full calendar of infrastructure works are on the horizon for Melbourne, and Mr Brace says trenchless technology will continue to play a key role in the delivery of these vital assets. “As growth continues, we are more likely to see upgrades to our existing network within highly developed areas,” he says. “Trenchless technology provides us the ability to upgrade the network in built up areas with reduced impacts to our customers and existing infrastructure compared to open cut techniques. “It’s important that the industry continues to work together to ensure there is a greater understanding of the capabilities and limitations of trenchless technology to ensure risks are managed appropriately and great project outcomes are achieved. “While the pandemic has been a huge challenge, we are confident that we will come out of the situation with lots of positives. The innovations in the use of technology, strengthening of relationships and new ways of working will play out for the benefits of our customers, the community and the environment for a long time to come.” Ms Smith adds CWW continues to use trenchless technology to minimise disruption in the city. “We’ve got a program of renewing some of our bigger watermains in some of our innercity areas. We’re working in an incredibly complex array of underground assets in those areas, so we use a combination of fitfor-purpose technology – microtunnelling underneath key intersections and roadways is a really great way of minimising disruption to our community. “We’re really positive about the future and we’ve got a really good, healthy program of work looking forward over the next couple of years. We’ve got a healthy and resilient delivery partner capability that we tap into and work really closely with to deliver those works. “The future looks bright but we need to continue to keep focusing on those innovative ways to deliver those projects to really lift the bar on safety and minimise community disruption.”

L&D completes biggest project to date In July 2018, L&D Micro Tunnelling was awarded a drilling contract outside of Melbourne for the HMAS Cerberus Redevelopment by Land Engineering. After 15 months of tunnelling works, the project’s last drill shot was completed in March 2020.
L
ocated 75 km from Melbourne, the HMAS Cerberus site occupies more than 15 km2 near Crib Point on Hanns Inlet, Western Port Bay in Victoria, with approximately 980 uniformed, defence, civilian and contracted staff working at the base. There are also approximately 6,000 training places per year across 300 courses, which range in duration from one week to 12 months – resulting in an average of 1,100 trainees at any one time throughout the year. Work on the new sewer mains commenced in December 2018 and job planning with Land Engineering and other contractors onsite became vital due to the purer size of the construction site. Tunnelling works were spread out over a 15-month period and the operation’s last drill shot was completed in March 2020. Project specifications This project consisted of approximately 30 tunnel boring machine (TBM) setups and 20 launch shafts ranging from 1.5-9 m deep. The total distance of drilling accumulated over the 15 months was 1.6 km.
Various pipe sizes were installed, including 150 mm, 225 mm and 300 mm Iplex restrain pipe, while there was also one 50 m drive that involved pipe jacking 427 mm of Hobas GRP pipe. L&D Microtunnelling says the drill provided an opportunity to design and construct a new drill head to not only suit the pipe used but the ground conditions as well. “We encountered mostly friendly ground conditions throughout the project. Most drives were through sandy clay, but in some areas, it was a lot more challenging as we faced high plasticity clays and unstable sandy clays,” says the company. “Groundwater was also a challenge in most of the deeper shafts as we were drilling very close to and even in a few circumstances under the water table.” The company says it was very proud of its crew’s efforts to successfully complete its biggest project to date. Built on experience L&D Micro Tunnelling was established in 2015 by lifelong friends, Luke Lewis and Christopher Dean, who first began

Major project requires Adept solution Adept Civil Group has completed a microtunnel bore for the Windermere Railway Services Crossing, allowing for a new power feed and power supply for the area’s residential subdivision.
T
he six-month project was awarded in April 2020, with the sole contractor – Adept Civil Group – having to work through tough lockdown conditions in Victoria during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of October, Adept announced the project’s completion, saying the entire team came together to reach the milestone on what was a major infrastructure upgrade contract. The works comprised a microtunnelled rock bore under the Geelong to Melbourne V/Line VicTrack Rail Line and Armstrong Road at Windermere, which allowed for a new power feed. To carry out the microtunnelling, Adept excavated both launch and retrieval shafts at approximately 10 m deep in solid basalt rock. The rock bore then consisted of 105 m pipe jacking of a 427 mm GRP sleeve for the installation of two 180 mm and one 125 mm PE power conduits. To complete the bore, Adept used and supplied the Vermeer Axis Micro Tunnelling Machine. Adept says constant support of the bore was necessary during the project, including while piloting the 350 mm diameter tri cone head, jacking the 427 mm GRP pipe and backreaming with a 440 mm diameter rock head. “The Axis machine was chosen for this project due to the crucial scope of having a fully supported bore at all times under the rail,” the company says.

Controlling the solution to good business
The Controltech Solutions team working on a major Melbourne project with its extensive and versatile fleet of trenchless machinery.
Founded in 2014, Controltech Solutions has continued to experience significant growth and expansion in each subsequent year, allowing it to secure its position as a leading provider for the protection and installation of underground infrastructure.
W
ith his background as an electrician, Controltech Solutions Managing Director Brenton Davey started the business as a registered electrical contractor to complete end-to-end electrical and communications work in 2014. Initially, most work came from National Broadband Network (NBN) projects where Controltech Solutions was subcontracted to Tier 2 companies. Over time, Controltech moved onto larger scale communication projects such as Optus’ business fibre connections, where it completed all the civil and cable hauling requirements. In 2016 – only two years after the business was founded – Controltech Solutions sealed direct contracts with Visionstream and Lendlease on the NBN project. Mr Davey says these contracts resulted in the constant use of non-destructive digging (NDD) units, leading
to the purchase of Controltech’s very own NDD truck later that year. In 2017, the company purchased an additional NDD truck as well as drain cleaning combination units to expand its capabilities. In 2018 and 2019 the business tripled in size, leading to more NDD purchases, drain cleaning units and civil trucks. The business now employs 65 staff, has 24 trucks in the fleet and has contracts secured on multiple major projects across Melbourne. This includes providing service locating and NDD on the CTD9 rail project and various level crossing removal projects. “Through the supply of NDD, drain cleaning, CCTV, underground service locating, asbestos removal and civil works, we are proud as a company to be a part of successful projects,” he says.
30 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
“We also played a major role in the successful rollout of the NBN Project from civil works to cable hauling and splicing. As a team, we found our point of difference by taking on the more technical build areas, such as the inner city, with the use of our state-ofthe-art equipment and experienced field team. “The focus for our civil crews is now on major road and rail works along with volume communications projects.” Mr Davey says the focus of the NDD and drain cleaning side of the business is to continue growth in all areas and “become a leader in specialised services”. Current service offerings After years of continued growth, Controltech Solutions now has a wide array of machinery used on its projects – including the addition of robotic CCTV equipment, heavy vac units,

vacuum loading units, directional drills and coring equipment. Along with the new machinery and addition of more personnel across recent years, Controltech’s underground service offerings have also grown from its long-time specialisations of NDD, drain and culvert cleaning, drainage CCTV inspections and underground service locating. Now, the company can also provide drainage laser profiling, liquid waste management and recycling, pump station cleaning, vac loading, directional drilling and more. No matter what task it faces, Mr Davey says Controltech Solutions is dedicated to putting safety first. “We act in a manner that eliminates any risks that could result in an employee, client or member of the public being injured or at harm,” he says. “We strive to lead by example and recognise good practices surrounding a safe work environment.” The company also leads by example in best practices, by keeping both its employees and its clients at the forefront of priorities.
“We have a strong willingness to go the extra mile for our employees and clients as they are key to our business success,” says Mr Davey. “We manage any concerns that may occur and also satisfy their expectations to the best of our ability with a flexible, responsive, can-do attitude.” The growth continues Based in Carrum Downs, Victoria, Controltech predominately operates across the state, although the team has also completed some rural interstate jobs for wireless phone towers and optic fibre installations across the country. The team expects its track record of growth will continue in the coming years, with Controltech currently working on many major projects throughout Victoria. These include numerous level crossing removals, the Mordialloc Bypass, RIA Metro Tunnel, Western Roads upgrade, M80 upgrade and the Melbourne Water Eastern treatment plant. Mr Davey says sustainability is an organisational priority, with the work carried out expected to have a lasting
presence that is in the best interest of the environment – including recycling waste materials generated by equipment for re-use on projects. “For example, crushing our waste concrete for use as backfill and separating rock and sand from NDD muds to also use for backfill,” he says. Controltech Solutions prides itself on quality performance, allowing the business to continuously grow and improve alongside the industry. Mr Davey says the current organisational aim is to become a leader in the installation, protection and maintenance of all underground infrastructure. “We aim to achieve this by investing in our safety, our people, our plant and our processes,” he says. “Being innovative in the industry is a passion embedded within the company. We will strive to procure the latest technology and innovation to better the industry standards and provide quality service for our clients.” For more information visit www.controltechsolutions.com.au

with traffic regulations, negating the need for an escort vehicle. IDS GeoRadar says the total absence of antenna contact with the ground dramatically reduces stress on the system, resulting in less system maintenance. The connection between the system and the vehicle is also fully wireless and is managed by uMap, a new software that allows georeferencing to take place thanks to real-time GNSS and cartographic mapping. Stream UP is unique in that it has innovative dynamic stacking that improves the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) at any speed without modifying systems settings. “These characteristics make Stream UP unique and allows the system to better detect both longitudinal and transversal targets within the entire depth range,” says IDS GeoRadar. “With an antenna footprint of 158 cm and a recommended acquisition speed of 60 km/h
(up to 150 km/h is possible), Stream UP is able to collect the largest and most accurate data with the least amount of effort.” The post-processing and interpretation time of data has also been dramatically reduced, thanks to the introduction of real-time processing and 3D visualisation. IDS GeoRadar says the tools simplicity and customisable process makes it easy to use by both experienced and non-experienced users.
“The resulting output is an incredible clear and crisp tomography showing the entire 3D volume of the surveyed underground. The system can cover large area rapidly with 760 m2 able to be surveyed in a single working day.” says IDS GeoRadar. By using uMap, the user can remotely control the system with real-time diagnostics and without any physical connection between the vehicle and Stream UP required.
An innovative, simplified workflow The Stream UP system follows a simplified workflow, allowing accessibility and ease for the global utility mapping industry. With its easy to follow steps, IDS GeoRadar says Stream UP is being used successfully all over the world, as well as in the Australasian region.
Data processing phase The final phase is data processing, which is completed using IQMaps. The program allows the user to experience an immersive reality that demonstrates data visualisation speed, useability and a comprehensive data analysis. The data is then exported to CAD or ESRI shapefiles, signalling the finish of the workflow.
Setup phase With its modularity and low weight concept, weighing less than 100 kg, Stream UP is designed to facilitate ease in both transport and shipment time. The design allows the user to mount the system on any kind of vehicle in less than 15 minutes, requiring only two people to do so. Once mounted, the system can be transported to the survey location at traffic speed by a single operator. Acquisition phase The second phase uses the enhanced eDAD-S technology resulting in high data quality acquisition at speeds of up to 150 km/h without the antennas being in contact with the ground. IDS GeoRadar says this is possible thanks to the high scan rate of 15 scans/second and the dynamic stacking that automatically improves the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) at any speed.
Built for the industry, by the industry Across the utility mapping and underground locating industry, surveyors, utility companies and contractors all need accurate, reliable and up-to-date information to be available for immediate use. IDS GeoRadar says by using its latest Stream UP technology, detecting underground features becomes a simple and efficient task. “Our detection and mapping solutions provide a truly streamlined process from the field to the office, and back again, able to cover the entire utility detection, avoidance and mapping workflow with integrated solutions.” IDS GeoRadar currently has a system at the Brisbane office and says it would welcome the opportunity to showcase its capabilities. round penetrating radar (GPR) technology is vital to utility locating and mapping, with the non-intrusive method allowing for the surveying of sub-surface utilities. GPR collects important data concerning the presence and layout of buried utilities and other subsurface assets and infrastructure, while reducing costs from damage to utilities and creating more accurate mapping for future reference and future projects. With such benefits, the surveying process has become so vital that many countries have deemed the use of GPR a mandatory requirement through the implementation of robust standards – such as Australian Standard’s AS5488-2019 Classification of Subsurface Utility Information (SUI). The AS5488-2019 is an updated version of AS5488-2013 and relies on utility owners and operators providing evidence of existing subsurface utilities. ImpulseRadar ANZ Sales Partner Anthony Johnstone says this includes some important changes for utility locators when using technologies, including GPR, pulse wave generators and gas pipe tracking equipment. “All these technologies can now assist in improving a Quality Level C (QL C) designation,” says Mr Johnstone. “This further reduces costs in over utilising non-destructive digging devices and the costs associated with this along with improving accuracy with mapping data to QL C. The previous version AS5488-2013 did not allow GPR technology to be used to improve on
ImpluseRadar’s PinPointR and Raptor system.
a QL C, and a QL D classification was used for all radar devices and other technologies.” Thanks to ImpulseRadar’s modern technology and geophysical methods, underground assets can now be surveyed with the invaluable details of attributes and data that AS5488-2019 requires. Industry leading technology ImpulseRadar’s GPR utility locator, the PinPointR, was developed to maximise in-field productivity by using the company’s innovative real-time sampling (RTS) dual-channel antenna technology. The RTS technology provides industry-leading bandwidth, speed and resolution, all controlled via an intuitive user interface. ImpulseRadar says its PinPointR offers a straightforward and dependable way to locate, avoid or map underground utilities and offers market-leading performance and data quality while doing so quickly and easily. Despite not being new to the market, the PinPointR technology continues to boast the functionality required to meet approved industry standards. “The PinPointR can be utilised onsite to further improve the accuracy of mapping to QL C on known points and unknown targets to QL D,” explains Mr Johnstone. “You can further increase project
36 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
management by utilising multi-channel GPR like the ImpulseRadar RAPTOR 3D GPR array solution. The advantage of 3D GPR arrays is that you can cover a large area faster, so it’s an excellent option for larger projects. “This gives a quick overview of a large area reducing further costs and improving speed in utilising other locating technologies.” The RAPTOR system is a high-speed 3D GPR array enabling the collection of 3D GPR data at speeds in excess of 130 km/hour and 5 cm point intervals. Its capability of survey speeds eliminates the need for traffic control and safety vehicles, with ImpulseRadar calling the system “arguably the best 3D GPR array available today”. Mr Johnstone says while a GPR can be used to improve a QL C result in line with AS5488-2019 whether using a single-frequency or dual-frequency 2D GPR system, or a 3D GPR array, it is important to note that numerous technologies should always be used to create the most comprehensive mapping possible. “GPR should not be used by itself in any project and all locating technologies should be used to enhance and create more accurate utility detection and mapping,” he says. The UCS team onsite using the company’s new AT40 All Terrain.
UCS won’t ditch Ditch Witch Underground Civil Solutions are long-term customers of Ditch Witch CEA, the exclusive Australian supplier of Ditch Witch underground equipment. After its most recent Ditch Witch purchase, UCS says you simply “can’t beat it”.
U
nderground Civil Solutions (UCS) was looking for another directional drill to add to its fleet as a major job at the Heathcote National Park required all terrain abilities. UCS Managing Director Tony Mitchell says while the company did compare with another manufacturer, the Ditch Witch AT40 All Terrain system was the best choice due to its proven system and the supplier’s product support.
Mr Mitchell says the system is so good at what it does that the team had to divert to another project with challenging ground conditions before heading to Heathcote National Park, and knew the AT40 All Terrain was the machine for the job. The diverted project comprised a granite creek crossing including drilling through difficult blue stone – the kind of conditions the AT40 is optimised for. “Getting through that is bloody hard,” says Mr Mitchell, adding that the penetration rate is currently about an hour per rod thanks to the powerful machine. Ditch Witch says thanks to its All Terrain technology, the AT40 can undertake rock drilling at a low fluid level to decrease overall jobsite waste, minimise clean up and reduce environmental impact. Despite its minimised disruption, the machine packs maximised power and is equipped with a 160-gross-hp Tier 4 Cummins diesel engine as well as 40,000 lbs (18,100 kg) of thrust and pullback. Due to its power, productivity and enhancements, Mr Mitchell confirms the All Terrain system is “perfect for rock”. “You can’t beat it,” he says. Mr Mitchell says the team will then head out to the national park for an anticipated two months of directional drilling work after the crossing job is completed.
38 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
Product and knowledge supply UCS purchased its first Ditch Witch drill back in 2012 with another purchase in 2016, resulting in the operation of two AT30’s and fluid mixing systems on numerous projects across the country. Sticking with the four-year jump, Mr Mitchell says the AT40 All Terrain was purchased only five weeks ago, but it is already showing its worth. While UCS is not in the market for another drill any time soon, Mr Mitchell says he wouldn’t hesitate to buy from Ditch Witch again. “Product knowledge is really important to us,” he says. “The people at Ditch Witch really know their stuff, and it makes a world of difference.” In terms of additional support, Mr Mitchell says the Ditch Witch supplier has never shied away at lending a hand and is always “very flexible” to suit the customer’s needs. “Any servicing is just a call away. We can ring at any time, and if there are any problems we can go out to their depo or they can come to our office or even straight out to the site. “It’s been a long-term relationship, and it’ll go for much longer,” he says.

Maxibor undertaking a crossing at the Parramatta River using HDD.
Value beats price in the long run by Rodney O’Meley, Maxibor, CEO
Maxibor CEO Rodney O’Meley provides an insight into the importance of value over price for successful delivery of trenchless projects and winning future work.
A
s we move through these challenging times, it is important that civil construction projects involving trenchless technology continue to be delivered with quality, safety and broader value in mind. A fair and reasonable price that properly considers these factors will lead to better infrastructure projects for all stakeholders. Risks will be reduced and opportunities will be optimised through a more cooperative approach in both the project design and delivery phases. Maxibor applies this approach in the context of the delivery of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design and construct services for projects. Whether
it is a 100 m long 63 mm telecommunications bore, a river crossing, a gas pipeline or a 1 km long 800 mm water pipeline, the same approach is taken so that value can be optimised for all stakeholders. There is a wide range of stakeholders in any infrastructure project including asset owners, contractors (Tier 1s, major contractors, subcontractors) and their employees, materials suppliers, design and other service providers, regulatory agencies, funders, insurers, the local and broader community plus the environment. If all work cooperatively through this process and are respectful of each other’s needs, then strong trusting relationships will build, and
40 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
the delivered project response will be a win for all – and more work will also be won by all the service providers. Considering this in the context of Maxibor as a leading HDD design and provider, the following are some of the benefits that flow from the company’s value based cooperative and knowledge sharing approach: • A design that can be constructed without surprises. • Leading design expertise which provides asset owners and clients significant savings on design and construct plus reduced time to achieve approvals from authorities. • A price that ensures the full scope of works is consistently delivered to the required level of quality and on schedule. • Full compliance with safety and environmental needs of the project monitored by an internal HSEQ team. • A large fleet of rigs, cleaners, other plant and tooling which always enables the right equipment to be applied to the project. • Plant and crew resources based across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to enable ready mobilisation (and overcomes COVID-19 border restriction impacts). • Capacity to handle the upsurge in activity as more infrastructure projects commence as part of the economic recovery process. • Cooperative client and other stakeholder relationships that facilitates project challenges being more easily communicated and successfully overcome. • An ability to impress the asset owners with quality, safety and on schedule delivery to the benefit of the principal contractor (in winning future business). • A pricing structure which reasonably prices the more complex bores on the basis that a good volume of work will be provided through the relationship on other projects. • A proactive approach to engaging with local suppliers and Indigenous businesses. • A proactive media presence in which we help promote those that deal with us in a cooperative and positive manner. • A valuable network of respectful relationships across the infrastructure sector at an asset owner, Tier 1, major contractor, supplier, design consultancy, industry advisor, media, industry organisation, Indigenous business and organisation and other people of influence. These examples apply equally to any sized rig projects. It is really all about building relationships, respect and responses if business-to-business interactions are to be sustainable and outcomes optimised, especially
HDD
in the challenging times of COVID-19 and economic recovery. We are finding this approach is particularly attractive to many asset owners, Tier 1s and major contractors. It is leading to a wealth of opportunities for Maxibor across the infrastructure sector covering power, gas, water and sewer, telecommunications, rail, roads, renewables and mining. Increasingly, our clients are recognising that Maxibor delivers a quality service and honours it commitments to schedule. They prefer a fair and reasonable price, which works to reducing the risk of the higher exposure trenchless activities on the current and future projects. Maxibor is now a company many others want to be associated with because of its well-established network of respectful relationships across the infrastructure sector and broader community. It is worth noting that our asset owner, Tier 1 and major contractor clients are also increasingly telling us they are seeing players in the HDD market who are on a cycle of low bidding purely to secure work. They are telling us their experience is that quality of service
from low-priced bidders is often compromised and corners are being cut, which over time has exposed them to unacceptable risks including: • Inability to complete all allocated bores on projects leading to time delays and the need to bring in more capable drillers to complete more difficult work at a higher cost/m due to the urgency to fix the problem. • Frac outs due to lack of appropriate equipment, poor drill fluid management or inexperience with difficult ground conditions. • Shortcuts taken on safety, regulatory environmental compliance (plant maintenance, worker safety, access areas, vegetation damage and non-compliant disposal of drill mud). • Contractors running low cost, lowerskilled and inexperienced HDD crews to try and complete the project to the budget they have.
• Bore holes not being properly cleaned with consequent damage to the pipe. • Breakdown of relationships between asset owners and lead contractors resulting in no future business for the lead contractor from that asset owner. Our clients are also telling us they stand more chance of winning future work through quality of performance – their clients, being the asset owners, do not want project issues which become headlines (internally and definitely not externally). The message for the HDD and other trenchless service providers is clients are increasingly looking for value to be brought to both the project and to the business through a strong enduring relationship with the trenchless provider. A low, one-off transactional price will clearly not optimise value in the long run.

Directional drills with a difference Bulky obstacles and narrow job sites are just some of the common challenges facing contractors. For HDD experts DirectBor, reliability, efficiency and pinpoint accuracy are vital features it looks for when choosing equipment for projects – which is why it chooses Vermeer.
S
ervicing Victoria and extending Australia-wide, DirectBor are leaders in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and specialise in small-large-scale projects. At full capacity, DirectBor has more than 50 employees as well as more than 100 pieces of plant and equipment in its fleets. When it comes to the installation of underground conduit and pipes, DirectBor understands equipment performance is a major factor in achieving a successful outcome – especially in the urban and built-up environments it commonly works within. DirectBor Director Aaron Finch says the company is always looking for the latest technology to help it succeed, and recently purchased a new horizontal directional drill to do so. After initially trialling a competitor’s
drill, Mr Finch realised it was not the right fit for DirectBor’s needs and searched for an alternative. Finding the right drill Mr Finch says initially DirectBor used a competitor’s drills until the company purchased its D40X55DR S3 Horizontal Directional Drill from Vermeer Australia in 2019. Once he saw the Vermeer drill in action, Mr Finch says he was impressed with both the technology incorporated into the drill as well as the ease of operation, and knew it was ideal for the company’s fleet. With the successful performance of the D40X55DR on several projects, Mr Finch says it was so well liked that DirectBor decided to trade its other drill for another one of Vermeer’s products – the new D23X30DR S3 Horizontal Directional Drill.
42 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
“We heard great reports about the D23X30DR S3 from the testing they did in America, so we thought we’d give it a go,” says Mr Finch. “It’s an incredible drill.” With a narrow and low-profile footprint, the D23X30DR S3 is ideal for compact commercial or urban job sites. While compact, it has high speed and power capabilities, featuring a carriage speed of 62.8 m/minute, 219 rpm rotational speed and 24,000 lbs (108,862 kg) of thrust and pullback, which are all fuelled by a 100 hp Deutz engine. Mr Finch says some of the benefits DirectBor has already seen with the D23X30DR S3 drill include time efficiency and steerability with the rod pulls. “We just finished a 70 m shot of 4x140s in Taree. The project involved a lot of assets to duck and weave around, but the guys
HDD
completed it in five days thanks to the D23X30DR S3,” he says. In addition to speed and power, the D23X30DR S3 is also extremely quiet with a 99 dB(A) guaranteed sound power level, meaning it has minimal impact on local businesses and neighbours around worksites. “It’s very quiet, so we don’t get any complaints from residents when it’s revving,” says Mr Finch. Exceptional customer service DirectBor has been a long-term customer of Vermeer Australia, having already acquired a HDD locator, a D36X50 drill, a VSK100XT2200 Vac Truck and a D40X55DR DR. Mr Finch says DirectBor has now replaced the majority of its drill rigs with those from Vermeer Australia and the team is fully on board with the new equipment – so much so operators are even competing on who gets to take the new drills out. Mr Finch adds it is the exceptional customer service and after-sales care that comes with
every piece of equipment that makes working with Vermeer Australia easy and hassle-free. “The timely customer service and support is a major factor in continuing to choose Vermeer products over others,” he says. “If I’ve got a question or concern, they’re on to it straightaway, there’s no real lead time for anything. “Their spare parts are absolutely amazing. They’ve invested in their own company building [the Vermeer Australia dealership] in Derrimut, so the majority of their parts are there.” Mr Finch says he also loves the availability of advice, and says he speaks with someone from Vermeer Australia every few weeks to touch base. “Vermeer Australia actually keeps in touch after sales, they don’t just give you the drill and say, ‘There you go, we’ll talk to you when you want another one’,” he says. “It doesn’t matter who you ring up, if they don’t have the answer, they’ll go to someone that can get you the answer at that time.”

One Shot, plenty of opportunities
After completing a drill for Lilydale Farmers earlier in 2020, One Shot Directional Drilling has received plenty more opportunities from farmers in the Lockyer Valley who want to provide fast irrigation for crops on the opposite side of roads.
O
ne Shot Directional Drilling (OSDD) is a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) specialist, with its history of projects spanning crossing waterways, roadways and environmentally sensitive areas where other trenching methods are not possible, all throughout Queensland and in the northern New South Wales region. Most recently, OSDD has been completing drilling projects on various farms in the Lockyer Valley, Queensland, as HDD is an ideal method for sites sensitive to surface disruptions – such as farming crops. OSDD would drill under the road and now, upon completion of the drills, farmers can provide fast irrigation for crops on the opposite side of the road to where the dam or water wells are situated.
A durable solution OSDD Managing Director Adrian Brock says the team has completed many drills on farms within the region, all within very quick timeframes. Each project has taken no more than 2-3 days, with OSDD installing HDPE PN16 blue stripe of varying lengths and sizes at Lilydale Farms, Huggins Organic Farms, Windolf Farms and more. Mr Brock says HDPE PN16 blue pipe was chosen for the projects due to its high durability, ability to be used for a diverse range of applications and its non-corrosive, chemical resistant properties. The pipe is available in a wide range of thicknesses and pressure ratings, with fittings and equipment to create an entire system, with such versatility necessary for the various jobs. “Poly pressure pipes are designed for a long lifetime (in excess of 100 years) in underground infrastructure,” says Mr Brock. “Installing the pipe in the ground is typically the most expensive part of the operation (usually 85-90 per cent of the project costs), therefore the long life and durability of poly piping remove the need to regularly replace pipes within their working lifetime.” In addition to its long life and durability, the HDPE PN16 pipe is lightweight and flexible, which allows for an easier and more cost-

effective freight, handling and installation. To complete the installations, Mr Brock says OSDD used a Vermeer D9x13 Series III Directional Drill Rig, Ditch Witch JT2020 Directional Drill Rig, Ditch Witch FX30 Vacuum Excavation Truck and a Digitrak F5 Falcon Locator. “True professionals” Lilydale Farms Pty Ltd Farm Manager Ryan Folkard – who knew underground drilling existed but didn’t know where to start before finding OSDD online – had the first drill completed by the team earlier this year, and has continued to call upon them since. Mr Folkard says the team are “true professionals” who are on time, well organised and dedicated to safety – both from a traffic point of view as well as the job they are doing. Mr Folkard also says the OSDD team are so helpful that they didn’t shy away from doing him a favour while onsite with their vac truck – solving a cable issue he’d had for quite some time. “In the past, I had other contractors come up and try to find a fibre optic cable with no luck. Adrian found it in about an hour,” he says. Mr Folkard adds he would “150 per cent” recommend the company to other farmers in the region – something he has already been doing.
HDD
Huggins Organics Farm Owner Troy Huggins found out about OSDD through Mr Folkard, with his own drilling job being completed a month ago. Mr Huggins shares Mr Folkard’s high opinion of OSDD drilling, saying the team is “very prompt, very polite and very professional”. “They do a neat and tidy job, don’t leave a mess around,” said Mr Huggins. “It’s never a drama for any questions, they’d answer them straight away and if you need paperwork, it’d be sent through straight away. They’re absolutely fantastic.” A wealth of experience Mr Brock established the family-owned business in 2017, after gaining more than 20 years of experience in the HDD industry himself. Since then, OSDD has grown to specialise in HDD and underground boring services for the installation of conduits for water, gas, power and telecommunications all across the Sunshine State and northern NSW. Since acquiring the knowledge and expertise to successfully complete projects ranging from

small residential to large civil projects, Mr Brock says the OSDD team is always able to provide a profile design of crossings to meet a client's chosen methodology and has more than 20 years of experience drilling in all terrains, especially rock bores. The company can install single or multiple conduit type configurations ranging from
63 mm conduits to 355 mm on-grade HDPE pipes for sewers or enveloper pipes and Mr Brock says over the years OSDD has provided its drilling services to all kinds of clients, including private enterprises, government agencies, city councils, major network providers, small construction companies and the recent and successful addition of farmers.

The project's barge-based recycling system, vacuum truck and other support equipment.
Making connections with Superior HDD Steep, rocky and accessible only by water, many parts of Pittwater’s Western Foreshore in New South Wales are as secluded as they are beautiful. But with the Mona Vale area earmarked for a new NBN connection, a thoughtful and well-planned HDD approach was required to ensure locals are better connected than ever.
T
oo isolated for large populations, and with ground conditions too hard for agriculture, the Northern Beaches’ natural beauty has remained largely intact over the years. With many locals living among the secluded beaches and national park areas and the advent of modern demands, the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) to the area via the Mona Vale Western Foreshore NBN Outfalls was inevitable. The challenge was finding a suitable solution to install this vital infrastructure in such an inaccessible and environmentally sensitive location with difficult rock conditions.
Strict environmental requirements From the start, the project was bound by rigorous environmental conditions considering much of its location was covered by the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. A trenchless solution became a non-negotiable in order to minimise the environmental impact – with horizontal directional drilling (HDD) being the preferred method. To undertake the job, Central Coast-based HDD specialist Superior HDD was engaged by Downer to complete the four HDPE HDD ocean outfall connections. Superior HDD Managing Director and Operations
46 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
Manager James Burch recognised the project’s challenges immediately. “This is a very sensitive national park area, with many parts only accessible by water,” he says. “HDD was the only way to do it, and we knew with good planning, design, and risk mitigation, we would get it done right.” Minimising risk Mr Burch says his priority was first to fully understand the project’s risks in detail. “We know the ground conditions in this area very well, and while the consistent Hawkesbury
HDD
sandstone provides hard but predictable drilling conditions, being such a sensitive area, hydrofracture was not an option,” he says. “So, we had our HDD design specialists complete a detailed profile and alignment and hydrofracture assessment, coming up with an ultraconservative, deep profile to minimise frac-out from that perspective.” Mr Burch explains that from there, drilling fluid was the next step in the process. “We needed bentonite to ensure optimal borehole performance and cuttings removal, but we couldn’t risk release of this fluid into the surrounding waters,” he says. “So, we devised a detailed drilling fluid plan which used a bentonite program for most of the initial pilot, then a complete displacement of the hole, replacing all fluid with an environmentally low-impact xanthan gum mix. “This allowed us to punch out using the biodegradable xanthan gum fluid, as well as to responsibly plan, monitor and analyse our returns for the entirety of the bores.” Practical implications During the job, Superior HDD found mobilising its Ditch Witch JT60 All Terrain midi rig and support equipment to the isolated sites also required many practical adaptations. “Many of the project areas are accessible only by water, and being ocean outfalls, much of our support equipment was transported and set up on barges for the duration of the project,” says Mr Burch. Along with limited accessibility, the steep and rocky environment added additional challenges. “For more than one crossing, there was a 50 m elevation difference between the drill site and the mud recycling system on the barge.
Superior HDD Managing Director and Operations Manager James Burch completing the Bore 1 punch out.
“We rose to this challenge by supplying top of the range, powerful transfer pumps, as well as extensive auxiliary equipment to minimise possible interruptions.” Community engagement Mr Burch says the project required involvement of a range of stakeholders, with Superior HDD seizing the opportunity to demonstrate the strengths of HDD. “We had eyes on us for the whole project. In such a pristine environment, the local community was very environmentally conscious,” says Mr Burch.
Significant access and space constraints were overcome to establish the ocean outfall entry points.
“We consulted closely and regularly with stakeholders to be fully aware of and compliant with all environmental requirements, and to put concerned locals’ minds at ease. “We also don’t rely on subcontractors for any of our HDD equipment, so we were able to personally consult with major stakeholders like National Parks, and then directly supply all gear in compliance with their strict requirements, including tracked machinery only.” Successful connections Mr Burch says the final of the four connections was completed in late September, on budget and within required timelines. “We were proud to showcase the accuracy and environmental benefits of HDD with this project, proving that with good preparation and risk mitigation, it’s a safe, responsible method in even the most pristine environments.”

QDS celebrates 21st year Established in 1999, the family owned and operated company has grown to become one of Australia’s leading suppliers of tooling and equipment in the HDD industry. With its 21st birthday on the horizon, Queensland Drilling Sales & Supplies shows no sign of slowing down.
Q
ueensland Drilling Sales & Supplies (QDS) was established by Grant Spaninks, an industry veteran who had a lengthy career laying gas mains in Victoria before eventually relocating to Queensland in 1995. Grant found himself holding one of the first contracts in the steerable installation of new pipelines ducts and cables for the cable television rollout in Queensland, resulting in many years of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) through rock. QDS Operations Manager Luke Spaninks says by building a reputation as a respected HDD driller, Grant was able to leverage his years of experience into business ownership – and QDS was born. “[By] identifying a gap in the market for quality equipment, hands-on experience and knowledge in the HDD industry, Grant imported a range of self-contained and sustainable drilling machines, later sourcing the highest quality tooling and equipment that would operate efficiently and effectively in all types of Australian terrain,” says Luke. “To be successful and provide the quality and level of service that we've become known for requires an understanding of the importance of creating strong relationships with both manufacturers and customers. “At QDS, we value the relationships we've developed with our suppliers, some of whom we've worked with over a period of 20 years including our leading supplier Melfred Borzall, Digital Control, Bit Broker, Kerr Pumps, Horizontal Technology and Brewis to name a few.” Changing with the times HDD has become increasingly popular for the installation of infrastructure throughout Australia, and technological and engineering advances have allowed HDD tooling to meet and exceed expectations for trenchless installation. Additionally, the advances of the internet, social media and the instant access to information in the modern era means connecting with drillers has grown considerably easier since QDS was first established. “With HDD having always been a time critical industry, the ability to connect on a global scale, as well as having more freedom in
terms of mobility, now allows us to service drillers across Australia and the Asia-Pacific in a much faster and more accessible way,” says Luke. “Changing our focus to become leaders in tooling, we created a model that allowed QDS to compete with larger competitors, while remaining true to our vision of uncompromised quality and service for our customers. “QDS is able accommodate any rig brand, as well as providing same-day shipping on custom-made tooling. This helps drillers to standardise tooling, saving them time and money.” The company is focused on the complexities unique to HDD tools, rather than attempting to provide support for trenchers, excavators and all other types of ground moving equipment. With this focused niche, QDS has grown to become experts in the HDD industry and its subsequent product lines. World’s “number one seller” While QDS began by servicing drillers solely throughout Queensland, it progressed into a nationwide offering within its first six months of operation, as word quickly spread of an Australian-owned and operated company willing to assist its clients and
provide them with equipment tailored to HDD requirements.. By 2018, the company had expanded to two locations in Queensland and Victoria, allowing it to better service drillers nationwide. Now, QDS offers its products and services all over Australia as well as throughout the Asia-Pacific. Luke says QDS provides reliable, top-quality HDD tooling for purchase, designed to sustain a long service life with low-wear and high productivity. It does so by sourcing suppliers that are known for tested quality and performance, both locally and internationally. “As the sole distributor for Melfred Borzall in Australia, QDS has been the world’s number one seller of Melfred Borzall eagle claw heads for the better part of decade, also stocking the fast back system and a wide range of reamers and blades,” he says. “We provide Tricones, PDC and rock hole openers from Bit Brokers and Horizontal Technology, along with the latest tracking technology from Digital Control Inc. for all of your location needs. “In addition to tooling, we offer various cleaning systems, generators, drill rods and mud pumps. Together with support from our suppliers we can offer specialised training for equipment including Digi Trac Location systems.”

The solid choice for hydrovac slurry separation Known as a mud recycling system supply, GN Solids Control has approximately 30 mud systems throughout Australia. With 12 sets of its new GN Hydrovac Slurry Systems already being used successfully in the US and Canada, GN says it is "definitely a cost-effective choice".
H
ydrovac is a process that creates a slurry mixture of liquid with high solids content, approximately 60 per cent liquid and 40 per cent solids. Unlike conventional excavation, hydrovac excavation does not separate soil horizons; instead, it mobilises potential contaminants through the excavation addition of water (solvent) and agitation. A unique procedure In cooperation with a US client, GN developed the first hydrovac slurry treatment system in the US three years ago. After witnessing the proven success, the
client purchased another nine systems as the business grew, and another Canadian client purchased two systems on referral. All GN’s systems have been kept in the original basic concept and been continuously upgraded in their final details in order to perform better. GN says there are some different options in the market already, with sediment being the most traditional one. However, the GN Hydrovac Slurry System is streamlined, compact and incredibly smart. The company adds it is a supremely durable, closed-loop

system to recover solids and reduce water consumption largely. “Based on our experience on oil gas drilling mud [and] horizontal directional drilling (HDD) mud, we have creatively developed our own procedure,” says GN. GN designs and manufactures waste management systems for hydrovac slurry and directional drill slurry. The solution is to use liquid and solids separation equipment to treat soil, soup or slurry generated from the hydrovac or HDD projects and produce reusable construction material and discharge clean water.

to a decanter centrifuge. Meanwhile, solids are dewatered by the screens underneath cyclones. The final stage is the decanter centrifuge, which is the most important step as it considers the high solids content and normally adds in dosing polymer to eliminate tiny particles. After this, all the solids are stackable and the water is reusable. System features GN’s hydrovac system offers the complete package design for a turnkey solution, developed with many years of proven experience. Its modularised system allows for fast installation and flexible movement, while the four-phase mechanical separation provides operators with a better result. The company’s standard hydrovac slurry separation system generally includes a scalping shaker, fine shaker, desilter and decanter centrifuge. If needed, desander cones can be added in between the shaker and desilter to compose a five-phase system. Depending on site arrangements, GN usually has a vacuum truck drive backwards to a dumping platform and then pour through a big hopper, which collectively leads everything to the scalping shaker. The scalping shaker separates most of the stones and aggregates out, with the fluid then transferred to a shale shaker equipped with finer shaker screens to separate sand and silt out. Like the previous step, a pump feeds it to desilter cyclones, where fluid is then pumped
Keep costs low GN says its key highlights to keep clients cost as low as possible are the system’s strong screens and its tungsten carbide tiles and inserts. The scalping coarse screen is made of stainless steel bars, which are strong
enough to bear big particles and have a durable design to make sure it lasts longer. Additionally, the fine screens and dewatering screens are composite frame, offering triple lifetime compared to traditional steel frames. GN says the screw of decanter centrifuge are covered by tungsten carbide tiles, allowing the upgraded design tiles to be more resistant and also ensure a longer life time, while the slurry ports and solids discharge ports are well protected by the tungsten carbide inserts. Servicing the industry’s creative needs 10 years ago, Daniel Leitch found himself working all week long as a driller operating HDD machinery and spending his weekends building custom solutions for the industry. After realising he could turn his weekend interest into a full-time job, his business evolved and HDD Creations became an industry name.
W
ith more than 20 years of experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) machinery and working as an engineer, Mr Leitch says his business has developed alongside both the industry and his own career. Once he got into the civil engineering side and started working in HDD, Mr Leitch says his understanding of the industry grew – and so did his business prospects. “Through that, as I grew in that industry, I saw different things and slowly started to fix things and do things differently. Then I started building my own, custom stuff as the need arose,” he says. “Word got out and then other people started asking for tooling, so I was working every day of the week as a driller and every weekend building things as well. It just got to a point
where I was making so much tooling for other people that I could do it full time.” Now, Mr Leitch is not only building customised solutions for the industry full time with HDD Creations, but also fixing, repairing and rebuilding other machinery and offering expertise and advice to contractors all across Australia. Insider knowledge Mr Leitch now has an intricate knowledge of products, machinery and solutions. He says that since the team has used specific products – like the mud and drilling fluids from Mudex that HDD Creations now sells – they are able to give real world advice to their customers. This knowledge also extends to tooling and machinery; having used it personally,
52 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
Mr Leitch says he has a “pretty good idea of what’s going to work in different situations”. “Part of my little niche is having a background in this industry; you understand why things are the way they are. A lot of the customers I get actually come to me when they’re quoting jobs and ask how they should do them,” says Mr Leitch. “I think that’s one of the things that keeps bringing people back is the fact that they can come to me if they don’t actually know how to do something or they’re not sure about it, and I can not only build something for them but also give them a lot of support and advise them how best to use it – because I want my products to work. “I could give them the best reamer in the world – if they don’t know how to use it
HDD
properly, it still won’t work.” Mr Leitch says there is a lot of knowledge and information that goes into the HDD industry, and that insider knowledge is one of the things he can provide that other tooling manufacturers may not. Mr Leitch says he never gives out a product and says, ‘here it is, you work it out’, instead always making sure the customer is using the right tool for the right job. “Sometimes a customer will ring me wanting a certain tool, but it’s actually the wrong style for the application they’re wanting to use it in. A lot of the time we can then work through what they are planning to do, and I can advise them of a better way of doing it,” he says. On a recent, unique job in New South Wales, HDD Creations was able to create a unique solution to match. “The last job we did was a bit of an off the cuff job, it wasn’t your typical project,” he says. “They had an existing pipe in the ground that was full of slurry and packed off, so it was no longer any good and the client wanted to go back through the same pipe, clean that out where they could since it had collapsed,
and then open it up, destroy the old pipe, remove the old pipe, and then cut a new hole to put a bigger pipe in the existing hole of the original pipe. “It was a large job with a lot of customised cutters and back reamers, and we had to work different things out to make it work for the client – but it turned out quite well.”
available constantly; however, the ‘mandrel reamer’ comes in set sizes – since it is targeted towards smaller pipes – so it is made constantly and kept on hand due to its popularity.
Popular products Mr Leitch says he often finds himself making clay reamers of different kinds and cutters as per the last project, as well as a device he has dubbed a ‘mandrel’. “It’s a small little device used to pull back smaller pipe that’s really changed the way many people do things,” he says. “You’re able to put pipe in the ground without using as much mud and time, so it’s costing the contractor less money at the end of the day. In some situations, it’s even halving the cost of what contractors are doing, so they’ve been very popular.” Mr Leitch says that other reamers have different styles and sizes, so HDD Creations does not have stock of every size and every style
“We’ll fix anything” Along with building custom HDD solutions, Mr Leitch says almost half of what the business keeps busy with is rebuilding existing cutters and machinery, saying it is “always a constant job” in replacing consumable items when pieces are worn down or worn out. “Once it goes out and gets used, quite often it comes back and we’ll rebuild it where necessary,” says Mr Leitch. “But it doesn’t have to be tooling. We’ll fix anything that comes back.” Mr Leitch provides a full service by always offering advice, but being willing to head out onto project sites to assist with a client’s needs where necessary.

FTR Vehicles Mr Knight says with inspiration from his love of Formula One, the vehicles in its new range have been named after Formula One drivers – including Ricardo, Senna, Lewis, Jenson, Vettel and Alonso. Alike to the drivers, the new FTR vehicles are already set to be champions for the industry. The vehicles are the product of a combination of technologies, including a rapid response flushing and suction vehicle equipped with both a tractor camera and a push camera. With flushing and suction capability along with the CCTV, more than 90 per cent of issues with wastewater overflows can be resolved on the first visit, Pipe Vision has developed a system that can revolutionise the industry. Alongside completing the required flushing, the attached cameras allow CCTV to be undertaken by the very same vehicle to ascertain the initial root cause of the problem. “This CCTV is then uploaded to the cloud for clients to review and even send to rehabilitation companies to get a quick and easy quote for a trenchless repair if required,” says Mr Knight. To streamline the entire process, Pipe Vision is using a geographic information system (GIS), a conceptualised framework that provides the ability to capture and analyse data. This combination of flushing and CCTV technology into one vehicle keeps Pipe Vision at the industry forefront in NZ while paving the way for Australian companies to follow.
Project success Mr Knight says the FTR Vehicle range has already become immensely popular throughout the industry, with some NZ utilities staying well ahead of the international game by using them on a regular basis. “FTR vehicles are used daily by Watercare to be on site within an hour ensuring the environmental impact is kept to a minimum,” he says. “More than 90 per cent of problems are resolved within 2 to 3 hours with a combination of suction for containment flushing for clearing the blockages and CCTV available for fault finding and repair analysis. The CCTV footage can be uploaded on site
to the cloud for escalation of larger issues making it as easy for engineers to simply open a web browser and review the CCTV footage taken moments ago.” In addition to Watercare, Pipe Vision says it is the preferred supplier to several other clients operating in various subdivisions, and that it is solely responsible for the CCTV and cleaning of all stages. “This has come about by the quality of service and information we supply in a timely and professional manner, which has secured several excellent clients. With a can-do attitude, we bring a proactive approach to the demands that are placed upon us at competitive rates,” says Pipe Vision.

SECA cameras On all its projects, Pipe Vision uses the latest CCTV technology available – including 14 iPEK crawlers, cameras and Rovion systems for pipeline inspection, supplied by SECA. The company says the picture quality and ease of use is second-to-none with very few companies using this technology, saying “no other system is able to supply a better level of deliverable quality”. After extensive experience with the brand, Pipe Vision decided SECA’s top-quality cameras were the most suitable choice for its new FTR range, and they can now be found mounted on each vehicle. SECA’s cameras come with high-resolution zoom cameras and are available in multiple configurations, enabling Pipe Vision to use them for a wide range of operational needs. Additionally, with the ability to fit different pipe sizes and provide varying cable lengths, the cameras provide a versatility that, when combined with Pipe Vision’s innovative machinery, is unbeatable on projects. 56 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020

Quick-Lock shows long-lasting results Australia’s fast, efficient and quality-proven distributor of sewer and plumbing equipment continues to rehabilitate the industry by suppling modern innovations, including UHRIG’s trenchless pipe repair system Quick-Lock that can “outlast alternative rehabilitation methods”.
D
esigned for point repair, pre-lining stabilisation works and as a liner end seal, UHRIG’s Quick-Lock rehabilitation sleeve provides structural, trenchless pipe repair with its heavy-gauge 316 steel and infiltration abatement with an EPDM rubber gasket. With many areas of application – including cracked systems, root intrusion, leaks, pressure pipes and joint displacement – the versatile system can be used in horizontal or vertical projects and above or below water level, making it particularly suited to the Australian industry. “Due to the high quality and durability of the materials used, Quick-Lock can be used not only for sewer rehabilitation but also in the area of drinking water or in industrial applications,” says SECA. The system has no need for chemicals and is suitable for all pipe materials, with its sealing and stabilising of pipe damages completed entirely by mechanical means. As a mechanical solution, the Quick-Lock system is also chemically resistant against sewage, thinned acids, lye, and aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The patented locking system ensures the sleeve stays permanently in position and, following the rehabilitation, the sleeve has its own static capability to absorb the natural tectonic pipe movement. SECA says for standalone permanent point repair or as a pre-lining stabilisation tool, the Quick-Lock sleeve restores a pipe’s structural integrity and is carefully designed to minimise diameter loss while outlasting any alternative rehabilitation methods. Conversely, the system can also work as an end cap to strengthen a cured-in-place pipe
(CIPP) liner at its most vulnerable point - the ends. As a mechanical solution, Quick-Lock can prevent the liner and host pipe infiltration or exfiltration for the lifetime of a close fit liner. SECA says when used as a liner end seal, the system is particularly effective on EX, spiral and UV cured liners. “Stronger and easier to install than other end caps, they’re a must-have insurance policy for a long-term watertight lining project,” the company says. Installed in minutes with minimal manpower and overhead needs, SECA says the efficient, reliable solution can also be consecutively installed in series to repair longer damages. Quick-Lock BIG In addition to the original Quick-Lock solution, SECA also offers a larger version that has been further designed and developed for use in permanently and tightly sealing leaking pipe joints, radical cracks and longitudinal cracks in large pipes and manholes of DN 800 or more. Quick-Lock BIG is made from V4A stainless steel of grade 1.4404 (AISI 316L) and an EPDM compression seal, with all materials used permanently resistant in municipal wastewater systems. The result is a 20 cm wide sleeve with a sealed area of approximately 12 cm. Alike to the original system, SECA says the Quick-Lock BIG can be used in a serial installation for longer areas of damage. Both Quick-Lock systems can be purchased from SECA’s warehouses, located in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne; from SECA’s nationwide sales representatives; or ordered from the secured online store.
The Quick Lock system is available in a range of sizes, including its mini model.

The lifting location at the plant for the 450 mm liner.
An efficient relining in FNQ Relining Solutions was approached by APL Plumbing Cairns to present a solution for one of its bigger clients, Malanda Dairy Factory in Far North Queensland. In a successful trenchless application, Relining Solutions completed a large diameter fold and form to give the client – and the environment – a worthy solution.
O
nce approached for the job, Relining Solutions commenced an initial investigation that showed this project would be different to a ‘normal’ rehabilitation due to the numerous obstacles to overcome. Not only did Relining Solutions have to work around factory shutdown times, confined spaces, minimal access, heights, equipment and plant placement technicalities, it also faced the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing requirements.
Overcoming challenges The project required Relining Solutions to reline a 450 mm diameter and approximately 70 m long reinforced concrete stormwater line, which in normal circumstances would be a quick in-and-out rehab – but this was far from the usual scope of works. The stormwater line ran underneath Malanda Dairy Factory with two access chambers that could not be accessed due to a concrete flooring installed on top of the manhole lids, both of which had bends of more than 30 degrees in them. Consequently, there were only two access chambers remaining that Relining Solutions could work from – one of which was surrounded by boilers, refinery equipment and plant with an average allowable working height of 2.2 m, as well as a surrounding working area of around 3 m². Due to the project’s technical aspects and installation access boundary restrictions, it was decided the only appropriate close fit rehabilitation method would be a fold and form PVC Liner with a wall thickness of 13 mm. This would minimise the reduction of the existing pipes inside diameter by only
60 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
26 mm but would give an increase in flow capacity of up to 40 per cent due to its smoothness. Relining Solutions says the planning portion of the project took up 95 per cent, while the execution had to happen in a limited seven-hour window to accommodate all parties involved. The company says it was a challenging project but is confident in its effective and efficient management to deliver a positive solution for the client. “With Far North Queensland being on our doorstep, it is our ambition to constantly strive to present local councils and clients with the best possible trenchless solutions for their projects on hand,” says Relining Solutions. “Relining Solutions can now with great pride, honour and enthusiasm announce that we have just been awarded the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils tender for sewer rehabilitation which includes Cairns Regional Council, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, Mareeba Shire Council and Tablelands Regional Council.” For more information visit www.aussietrenchless.com

REHABILITATION & REPAIR
Wilmot Pipelining is now providing its clients with a practical rehabilitation method for manholes through the use of a UV curing method that can restore manholes and pits in a matter of hours.
W
ilmot Pipelining conducts rehabilitations of pipelines of all sizes and shapes to upgrade asset owner’s infrastructure and keep it operational. By using trenchless technologies, Wilmot can transform ageing and failing infrastructure with minimal disturbance. The company says it provides many different pipeline rehabilitation methods to its clients and prides itself on finding a suitable solution for any and all situations. With a strong background in pipeline construction and hydraulic services, the Wilmot team says it has a “good understanding of the way pipelines are constructed”. With most of its infrastructure upgrades carried out on municipal assets such as water, energy providers, wastewater, industrial facilities and refineries, Wilmot says it is now offering clients the rehabilitation of pits and manholes using its UV curing method that can complete a restoration in a matter of hours. The company ensures that similar to its other trenchless offerings, its new liners are installed quickly and with no impact on the network while carrying out the renewal procedure. World first Wilmot Managing Director Andrew Wilmot says manufacturer Brandenburger Germany has created one of the first pioneered CIP cured manhole liners, which the company is now proud to be installing for its Australian clients. By using the innovative system, manholes and pits are transformed back to fully operational with a 50-year warranty on the asset. “As a pinoeer and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of UV CIPP, Brandenburger Liner has used its experience to develop an innovative method for manhole rehabilitation,” says Mr Wilmot. “The Brandenburger Manhole Liner BBS.8 reduces logistical effort for our customers at the job site and allows an efficient, as well as holistic rehabilitation of the sewer network including manholes and sewers.” Mr Wilmot says the UV manhole liner adapts to the shape of the manhole solely by air pressure, which prevents any time-consuming measurements of the manhole in the lead up to the rehabilitation.
“The specially designed stretchable GFR laminate generates three important advantages,” says Mr Wilmot. “Beforehand, no measurements of the old manhole are necessary, only the size of the manhole opening and the size of the manhole itself are needed. Secondly, there is endless production – with the special production technology, Brandenburger is able to produce all manhole liners at a stretch for diameters between 800-1,000 mm.” Mr Wilmot says the third advantage is rehabilitation can now occur from the bottom of the manhole up to the sewer pipe. “With a special installation procedure, it is also possible to rehabilitate the bottom of the manhole with the Brandenburger BBS.8 material.” The Wilmot main office and depot is located in Newcastle, New South Wales, although the company can service all areas of Australia, offering homeowners and municipal asset and infrastructure organisations rehabilitation services using trenchless methods. Additional offerings Alongside its many relining offerings, including UV lining, hot cure lining, point lining and patching, lateral seal lining and manhole repairs, Wilmot also offers various other trenchless services. As a Hunter Water Accredited Hydraulic services provider, Wilmot can construct new sewer and water mains. The team says its knowledge and experience gained from working on large-scale projects for more than
20 years has provided the confidence to deliver projects on time and within budget. Wilmot says it also has a diverse range of robotic cutters, including down the branch cutters, HSL cutters, reticulation cutters and beast cutters for medium to large bore pipelines, adding it can open up newly relined junctions and connections or remove large concrete deposits from pipelines. Additionally, the company produces high quality CCTV reports and assessments for its clients with the industry standard report system 'Wincan' to provide condition assessment and pre-and post-relining reports. Wilmot says it provides a complete pipeline rehabilitation service to its clients by including pipeline cleaning and waste disposal in its offerings, and completes this service using many different sized high-pressure water jetting and non-destructive digging units. “The Wilmot team pride themselves on having a cost effect and most non-destructive solution for any situation,” the company says, adding that it is an Australian family-owned company based on traditional values. “We pride ourselves on service, stability and reliability in providing pipeline rehabilitation solutions to our customers.”

Over time, the system grew to become widely used by utility network operators all over the world for a range of needs. These needs include the reliable and sustainable no-dig repair of potable water mains, gas pipes and sewer rising mains, as well as being installed in hydrocarbon pipelines to extend their lifespan. Primus Line prides itself on not only being a material manufacturing company, but also being involved in the engineering and product application processes together with its clients. A reliable solution When the hydraulic fracturing industry in Canada approached Primus Line in 2018, the regulator only permitted the use of HDPE, steel or trucking of produced water. Alternative solutions were not permitted since they were not yet considered safe for the transfer of produced water. Conversely, the approved solutions were not necessarily the most economic, as the deployment and demobilisation of both HDPE and steel required welding and cutting of individual pipe shots was a lengthy and costly process. Trucking of produced water is also a costly solution, as it requires a significant amount of fuel, damages road pavements and requires extensive labour.
The Primus Line system in action on a project in Norway.
By considering these regulatory aspects of the authorities alongside the technical and economic aspects faced by operators, Primus Line proposed and developed a safe and reliable solution for the transfer of produced water – the Primus Line overland piping system. The system is characterised by the supply of continuous liner length for several hundred metres, thereby eliminating the welding procedures onsite; reusable for multiple applications with improved operator handling due to a new liner matrix; quick deployment and mobilisation; lightweight and high material strength; and a tested and proven field connection that makes it a highly reliable, durable and cost-effective solution.
64 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
Overland piping system The Primus Line overland piping system consists of a newly developed liner matrix, being an inside thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating, an outside TPU coating and an aramid core, as well as a connection system specifically laid out for the system. The aramid reinforcement gives the overland piping system an extremely high strength, enabling it to accommodate high operating pressures by itself. The inner TPU layer provides high chemical resistance that complies even with aggressive hydrocarbon exposure conditions and eliminates corrosion, while the outer TPU cover eliminates UV degradation.
REHABILITATION & REPAIR
Both TPU coatings were subject to abrasion testing, completed with a mix of sand, gravel and water (mean grain size of 6 mm). After 600,000 cycles, the average abrasion was five times less than standard HDPE pipes in a comparable test. Primus Line says the abrasion resistance of the outer layer is important when handling the materials since it is placed directly on the ground. The result of this matrix is a highly flexible liner that can be applied for different terrains and traverse around multiple bends, in addition to the recoiling process being facilitated. A global application The Primus Line overland piping system is currently available from DN 150 to DN 350, with operating pressures of 43 bar for a DN 150 and 15 bar for a DN 350 respectively. The operating pressures were determined following API 15s standard with a design life of 20 years. Based on rigorous testing, as well as field trials performed over a period of several months with ambient temperatures as low as -32 degrees Celsius, the
Alberta Energy Regulator in British Colombia, Canada approved of the use of this solution. In addition to the hydraulic fracturing industry in Canada where the new Primus Line overland piping system has now been used in multiple projects, the company also sees requests from utilities all across the globe who face the same problems, as well as from different industries where temporary, safe and reliable water transfer is required. Typical areas of application can also be found in the municipal sector where overpumping of sewerage might be needed, such as during pipe renovation, or in the mining industry where a significant amount of water is required for processes. Although the CAPEX for the Primus Line overland piping system is higher than for traditional HDPE, the OPEX is reduced significantly resulting in a solid business case for operators. Primus Line says its new system has already successfully been used in Canada, Norway and Germany and is now available worldwide, including to the Australasian region.

Total Drain Group now has numerous combo trucks available in Queensland thanks to its merge with Tunnel Vision Services.
Total Drain Group opens doors to Queensland After identifying Tunnel Vision Services as a strong contender in the Queensland stormwater and sewer market, Total Drain Group integrated with the Brisbane-based company to form Total Draining Cleaning Services – opening the doors to a Queensland branch in September 2020.
T
otal Drain Group (TDG) came together in 2020, combining Utility Track, Total Drain Cleaning (TDC), Environmental Services Group (ESG) and Mainstream Recycling, with the aim to ensure all stormwater and sewer networks are managed effectively, efficiently and in an environmentally sustainable manner. TDG says it is now the biggest and most accomplished sewer and stormwater maintenance company along the east coast of Australia that continues to rapidly grow as it expands to Queensland.
Joining forces Earlier in 2020, TDG says it identified Tunnel Vision Services (TVS) as a strong contender in the Queensland stormwater and sewer market. Lead by Seth Watling, TVS has operated in Queensland for more than 10 years and has grown in both reputation and capacity with various regular clients and a sizeable fleet. TDG has now integrated with the Brisbanebased company, which will now trade as Total Drain Cleaning Services. The integration was finalised in September 2020 when the group opened its doors to its first Queensland

The pipe bursting technology was most suitable due to the heavy rock presence in the area.
More TRACTO for Forté Civil Long-time customer and Managing Director of Forté Civil Martin Curtis recently added another TRACTO-TECHNIK unit to the company’s fleet, saying the equipment is simply the “best on the market”.
W
ith numerous TRACTO-TECHNIK GRUNDOMAT moling units already in its fleet, Forté Civil made the easy decision to purchase another unit from TRACTO-TECHNIK in March 2020 when a new project came up. “The opportunity to complete a project where this technology was ideal for the pipe replacement came up and we decided to purchase the unit once our tender bid was successful,” says Mr Curtis. The unit in question is the GRUNDOBURST 800G pipe bursting unit, which Mr Curtis says is a machine Forté Civil has had its eye on for quite some time.
“We are very passionate about using trenchless technologies and wanted to add this machine to our fleet for a very long time,” says Mr Curtis. “TRACTO-TECHNIK equipment is the best on the market, very compact and easy to use with enough power to complete large pipeline replacements. “It is a simple unit to understand and very effective at carrying out the bursting projects we have used it for.” TRACTO-TECHNIK adds the machine's unique quick lock rods eliminates the need to screw each unit together, resulting in increased safety and reduced operator fatigue. One system, five methods While its predominately used to renew pipes using the static pipe bursting method, the versatile GRUNDOBURST range can also be applied to many other pipe repair and rehabilitation methods, depending on project needs. Pipe bursting is most suitable for water and gas pressure pipes, as well as gravity gradient lines, as it sees the old pipe replaced with
68 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
a new pipe of identical or larger nominal diameter. However, the GRUNDOBURST can also be used for pipe relining with smaller dimensioned long and short pipes for encrusted old pipes, making it suitable for pressure or gravity gradient lines with free cross sections in the old pipe. With a total of five methods for the single system, the machine can also be used for calibre pipe bursting, the tight in pipe method and the reduction method, which are all suited to various pipe types, diameters and lengths. “The main decisive factors for choosing the appropriate method are degree and type of damage, sustainability of the method and the resulting rehabilitation cost,” says TRACTO-TECHNIK. Overcoming challenges Forté Civil used the machinery for its pipe bursting abilities on a recent watermain replacement project at Whangarei, New Zealand that took place from July to October 2020. Mr Curtis says the team was required to complete the critical replacement during
REHABILITATION & REPAIR
drought conditions, with the existing 300 mm PVC pipe upsized to 355 mm HDPE. “As there was known rock in the area the decision to use pipe bursting technology was made as excavating or drilling a new pipe alignment would have been very difficult and may have resulted in damage to the existing critical pipework,” he says. “Using pipe bursting also allowed us to use the same pipe alignment through an area which was very congested with other services under a very busy intersection without causing any disruption to traffic or damaging other services.” Alongside its proven ability to negate existing pipe damage and minimise disruption, the GRUNDOBURST unit will install a PE pipe with a service life of 80-100 years, has both short set-up and installation times, is a safe application process in line with the latest standards and has a 50 per cent cost saving compared to open trench methods. With all its benefits and the ability to overcome project challenges, Forté Civil is already planning to use the machine on two more watermain replacement projects in the coming months.
TRACTO-TECHNIK says its GRUNBOBURST system has also proved its reliability and versatility all over the globe and the equipment is commonly used in both Europe and Australia. “They are the perfect choice for the trenchless rehabilitation of gas, water, sewage lines in sensitive grounds or near neighbouring pipes, cables or close to buildings.” Above and beyond support Mr Curtis says the TRACTO-TECHNIK sales and support team have been “brilliant to work with” and continue to provide Forté Civil with servicing and maintenance support and contacts for future needs. “[They] have been excellent throughout the process from initial consultation to remote training,” he says. “We have had to put this machine into action during COVID restrictions which would not have been possible without the daily support from TRACTO-TECHNIK.” For more information visit www.tracto-technik.com.au

The UV light curing train on a project site in Victoria.
Relined by Rangedale Rangedale’s trenchless team recently completed a large-scale relining project for a municipality in southwest Victoria.
R
angedale was engaged to design and reline one of the council’s major existing stormwater outfalls, with the existing system constructed of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) with diameters ranging from DN 600 to DN 750 mm. The project encompassed approximately 550 lineal meters of multiple stormwater lines for relining as part of the municipality's planned road rectification and drainage works, with one of the lines being DN 750 mm and 200 lineal meters. Rangedale says a combination of ground conditions and ground movement over the pipe’s lifetime had caused displacement along
the pipe alignment, requiring rehabilitation via trenchless technology to ensure minimal disruption. Another major challenge was a large amount of infiltration at joints due to tidal movement. “The relining was conducted to further the life expectancy of the existing pipeline without a major dig-up and disruption of traffic, environment and the community,” the contractor says. In total, the project saw Rangedale reline five lines using the client’s requested methodology of superior relining, ultraviolet (UV) cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner technology.
70 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
Innovative technology Rangedale’s UV CIPP liner technology is a global leading system using UV light during the installation process reducing curing times, removing old methods such as steam and resin curing which impose both high risk to personnel and environment. The system has been further upgraded to handle relines from 150 mm up to 1,500 mm diameter, with the finished product being a statically stable, seamless and flexible pipe. By being quicker and more environmentally friendly than alternative options, the system also increases productivity – resulting in a more cost-effective pipeline rehabilitation

solution, avoiding risk of personal injury and potential contamination to outfall waterways downstream. The latter was a major factor in this case as the works were located at the direct outfall to a natural waterway. Rangedale says despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, all works were completed on time and on budget. Smart solution, complicated repairs Rangedale says its trenchless technology offerings are the “smart solution for complicated repairs”. By using trenchless methodologies, the company can repair substandard or aged piping
while clearing away any obstructions. With a range of non-destructive tools, Rangedale can increase infrastructure’s longevity without the need for disruptive excavation work. In addition to its industry-leading UV liner technology and other relining offerings, Rangedale are also specialists in high definition CCTV inspections, robotic grinding, cutting and trimming, fibreglass patching and point repairs using the innovative Smart Lock system. Rangedale says with the scale of its fleet, personnel, industry knowledge and expertise, it is the first choice when it comes to drain cleaning, relining, inspection and maintenance.
About Rangedale Rangedale provides customers with a comprehensive service, as the Rangedale Group of Companies is vertically integrated, allowing turnkey solutions using all in-house services. ZAD winch, happy results Winch Hire’s popular ZAD 4 t diesel winch continues its track record of outstanding results, with its features proving particularly useful in the rehabilitation and repair of water pipes.
W
inch Hire’s ZAD product range is an industry essential, with a lift capacity of 4 t at 3,650 psi, powered by an 18.5 kW Kubota 3-cylinder diesel engine. The powerful winch has a payout of approximately 50 m/minute at its high speed, and 25 m/minute on a low speed. The first ZAD winch was custom built in 2004 and released by Winch Hire to the market, and the company’s National Sales Manager Troy Moulder says that, through all this time in the fleet, “they are still one of our most popular winches”. “Our fleet of ZAD winches are specific to Winch Hire Australia and have been custom built and fabricated to our specifications,” says Mr Moulder. “Our ZAD’s are more compact, allowing our clients to utilise them in tight areas
where access can be limited – especially down in a hole or trench.” Rehabilitation results The winch’s main use is for pipeline rehabilitation, often for the repair and rehabilitation of water pipes, but Mr Moulder says the winch is also commonly used on mine sites to assist in the replacement of conveyor belts. “Recently we had one of our ZAD’s go to Groote Eylandt, working for several weeks on a mine site,” he says. “Our client was very pleased with the performance of the unit.” As a small unit with a significant pulling power, the ZAD winch is capable of helping operators overcome many site challenges, such as heavy loads and difficult to access areas.
72 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
“It’s about the size of a pallet and is easy to move around with a small forklift or crane, given it only weighs 1.4 t,” says Mr Moulder. “We also have a trailer mounted unit for those who maybe in a remote location where getting a small crane is just not possible.” Mr Moulder says Winch Hire’s ZAD winches can be shipped from Winch Hire’s headquarters in Brisbane to anywhere in Australia. Additional offerings Alongside its ZAD range, Winch Hire also carries a variety of winches from 3-25 t that can assist in pipe rehabilitation or lining projects. Microtunnelling in the Top End
DJ Mac Cormick has completed another large diameter microtunnelling project on a stormwater drainage concrete jacking pipeline in the Northern Territory.
T
he project took place at the Larrakeyah Defence Base in Darwin, on a 1,950 mm pipeline with a 1,650 mm internal diameter. The project was undertaken using a Herrenknecht AVN 1600 control container and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) closed face laser guided steerable using a slurry spoil removal system. Contractors encountered groundwater on the first drive and ground conditions at 6-8 m of rock up to 150 MPa, with a rock cutting wheel used to cope with the high strength. The tunnelling involved two drives of 330 m and 354 m respectively, with an 850 t jacking system in launch shaft to drive both ways from this location. Due to length of drive, several intermediate jacking stations were necessary, while lubrication systems were employed to minimise friction on the outside of the pipe. Given the pipe diameter, man entry was possible from inside the MTBM should cutter changes be required along the drive. A ventilation system was necessary, not only at shaft locations but also inside the tunnel, and was designed to suit the drive lengths and high humidity in Darwin. The MTBM weighed approximately 24 t and required a crane pad and lift analysis to ensure safe lift loads. A 200 t crane was used to ensure
all risk contingency was covered, and the system included an MTBM and a trailing pipe housing power pack for running the machine. An intermediate jacking unit powering four sets of intermediate jacking stations was also in operation, enabling the capability of jacking more than 1 km drives, while pipe lift and lowering was undertaken using a 48 t excavator with lift analysis undertaken during the project’s pre-start. Detailed temporary design was undertaken by DJ Mac Cormick contractors including thrust block, entrance wall, base pad, entrance and exit rings, plates and more, which were independently inspected and signed off. Structural checks and verification of shafts design for launch and receival shafts were also checked off, and shaft shoring requirements were supplied and certified to KPA requirements for ground condition at depth. DJ Mac Cormick says initially three drainage pits were to be constructed onsite to suit the pipe diameters and future open cut take offs required; however, the company proposed a precast solution with pit components supplied by Humes Darwin, with the structural design and construction sign off undertaken by Cardno Consultants Darwin.

Tunnelling for another Direct Pipe world record
®
In 2020, McConnell Dowell set a new world record for the longest single Direct Pipe® drive on the Snells Algies Ocean Outfall Project for Watercare Services in New Zealand. The record 2,021 m drive broke the previous marker, also set by McConnell Dowell, which had been achieved on the Army Bay Ocean Outfall project.
W
arkworth, a town approximately 50 km north of Auckland, NZ, is undergoing population growth that necessitates the expansion and upgrade of the local wastewater system. Currently, the wastewater is treated in Warkworth and discharged into the local river. The upgrade scheme – as well as dealing with the local low pressure network – encompasses the construction of a new main from Warkworth to a new treatment plant at Snells Algies and a new marine outfall for treated effluent discharge to replace the ageing system. This scheme upgrade is also part of Watercare’s overall strategy to provide cleaner discharges and improve the overall environment around the area. Use of Direct Pipe® McConnell Dowell was awarded the contract for the outfall portion of the overall scheme,
consisting of a 4 km trenched pipeline installation from the new treatment works at Snells and an offshore pipeline section. The reference design for the outfall section consisted of a trenched solution across farmland followed by a trenchless section beneath the cliffs linking to a seabed laid pipeline complete with diffusers. McConnell Dowell, through discussions with Watercare, proposed a single trenchless alternative linking to the seabed pipeline to minimise disruption to the farmland and local environment. This revised design focused on meeting Watercare’s three key criteria: • Providing an efficient design with respect to whole of life cost; • Minimising risks to health and safety through application of safety in design principles, combined with construction methodologies with risk mitigation at their core; and
76 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
• Minimising disruption to Watercare’s operations and landowners. Project scope The project is split into three distinct operations involving a trenched dig and lay section, a Direct Pipe drive and marine dredging for the final marine pipeline. More than 4.4 km of DN 630 HDPE pipe had been laid through traditional trenched dig and lay, primarily along public roads, and the design incorporated six air valves and seven scour valve chambers. The outfall section consisted of 2,021 m of trenchless installation of a 1,220 mm OD steel pipe which is linked to the seabed section of 249 m of DN 335 HDPE pipeline. The layout of the scheme required a seabed recovery of the microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) and the operation would be a repeat of the previous MTBM recovery operation on the
PROJECTS
Army Bay project. Use of Direct Pipe technology The original team and the same Direct Pipe equipment from Watercare’s Army Bay Ocean Outfall project was reused for this project, with a new separation plant added to process the excavated spoil. As per tradition, MTBM 'Piper' was named with the help of the local school children. Lessons learnt from the Army Bay project were also incorporated into the planning and operation of the Snells project to improve safety and operational efficiency including changes to the pipe handling systems. The launch trench for Piper was constructed using pre-drilled king piles embedded to the required depth with sheet pile lagging supporting the trench excavation. Multiple ground anchors provide the vertical restraint for the pipe thruster, while the horizontal restraint is provided by tying into the launch trench structure. Piper was launched through a launch eye seal, which stopped any of the annulus lubrication fluids or groundwater
migrating into the launch trench. The overall length of the single trenchless drive itself was one of the biggest challenges as the preparation and planning needed to be extensive and make allowance for extremely limited access within the pipe and to the MTBM. Cutter tool changes, for example, could not be undertaken with the machine underground, so tools and wear parts needed to be specified and monitored closely, including specific maintenance opportunities pre-planned to allow early intervention. The effects of forces within the pipe walls themselves over this extensive single pipe length also becomes significant. While 1,929 m had been previously achieved at Army Bay, it was not without its challenges, already being 432 m longer than the previous record – Snells Algies at 2,021m was another 92 m longer. The geological conditions of the Pakiri sedimentary rock were expected to be similar to the East Coast Bays Formation sandstone and siltstones encountered at Army Bay, but this proved not to be the case and the differences between the geological formations required
changes to the slurry management systems and maintenance regime. The New Zealand Government considered this project ‘essential’ during the COVID-19 lockdown, supporting the need to keep the MTBM moving. This provided the team with opportunity to implement, ahead of the rest of the country, Level 4 COVID-19 health and safety practices and procedures, which were rolled out to the rest of the projects when the country shifted back to Level 3 and projects remobilised. MTBM recovery McConnell Dowell has a long history of marine recovery operations for MTBMs, from the Tahuna Outfall in 2008, with three others since then and a further two in the planning stages in addition to the Snells project. The MTBM was driven into a pre-dredged trench and separated from the main steel pipe and lifted to the water’s surface using an in-house designed pontoon that was also used to transport the MTBM to a local harbour where it was lifted out.

protect and support the sliplining process, kwik-ZIP says the project highlights the spacers capabilities. “This highlights the HDX spacers exceptional load capabilities as well as their ability to support heavy carrier pipe installation on low friction wear pads that resist abrasion from the casing pipe surface,” says kwik-ZIP. “The HDX’s unique load sharing design maximises the load bearing capacity of each runner and reduces point loading. The simple and efficient installation process does not require any special tools.” Another product in kwik-ZIP’s range, the HDX-38 spacers, were used on Diona’s Northern Road Upgrade Stage 5 Project in Western Sydney, New South Wales. The project involved 160 m of sliplining, with a 300 kg/m DN 900 carrier pipe that increased to 880 kg/m during hydrostatic testing. Due to the run length and the weight of the pipe, the kwik-ZIP spacer rings were installed at 1 m intervals for the first

30 m of the pipe and 2 m intervals for the remaining 130 m. Diona Project Engineer Vincent Roe says the company was impressed by the spacer’s performance due to the ability to handle the overall weight of the carrier pipe and the length of the bore. “While loading the carrier pipe we quickly realised how good this product actually was,” says Mr Roe. “The carrier pipe was easily pushed the full distance. The spacers performed to a very high standard and kwik-ZIP was always at hand offering technical information and completing site visits.” With the applicability to a wide variety of projects, kwik-ZIP ensures its centraliser and spacer products are also widely available. In addition to its Australian head office, kwik-ZIP also has established stockists in the US, UK and New Zealand. For more information visit www.kwikzip.com

A DCS Extractor Unit equipped with safety functions, three control stations and additional support equipment.
Extracting success with DCS DCS Manufacturing is holding its position as an industry pioneer with the addition of a Longo Recycling Unit and its very own Extractor Unit to the company’s expanding fleet.
E
arlier in 2020, DCS Manufacturing announced a new partnership that saw it become Longo agents and distributors throughout Australia and New Zealand. By partnering with Longo – a leading company in the advanced engineering industry for more than 10 years – DCS knew it could combine its regional expertise with international technological solutions. DCS says Longo’s expertise in manufacturing vehicles for the environment has a particular emphasis on the research, design and production of new technological solutions, allowing Longo to gain leading positions in the European and global market. “Longo’s highly flexible industrial structure allows for customer tailored solutions,” says
DCS, a solution evident in Longo’s Combined Recycling Units that DCS is proud to be offering to the Australasian market. Currently on their way to Australia from Italy, the new machines will allow the Australasian region to enjoy an 8,000 L debris collector body capacity and 4,000 L water tank capacity. The innovative Italian design also includes a high-pressure pump, vacuum pump, rear swinging hose reel, hydraulic side hose reel, telescopic suction boom, large capacity hydraulic oil tank and split-shift power transmission. DCS says the systems main advantages include continuous filtration without losing performance, a separation system with a screen, the limited wear of its high-pressure pump and the overall ease of use. “No special device is required with the purpose of installation inside the tank, the system is designed to automatically divert the sucked liquid directly into the specific compartment,” says DCS. “The clean water compartment is designed for the final cleaning operations of the filter and the tank working without recycling system.

Thanks to the fine separation of solid particles included in the muddy water sucked, the recycling system allows the reuse of the dirty water, avoiding high pressure pump damage.” DCS says the system boasts low operating costs thanks to the continuous availability of water and avoids system damage due to no sanding effect occurring. The systems are expected to arrive to Australia in the next few months, when DCS will proudly supply them to the market. Homegrown offerings In addition to its supply of Longo machinery, DCS also continues to provide the Australasian industry with numerous non-destructive and minimally invasive systems of its own, such as the DCS-4660T Tipping Body, an Australianmade Extractor Unit. The unit is a jet-vacNDD system that offers high-pressure jetting with vacuum recovery. DCS says after ongoing extensive research and consultation with users of jet-vac combination systems – including leading contractors and government authorities – its in-house engineers developed the

Extractor Unit to meet the demands of the Australasian market. A key factor in the design has been maintaining simplicity of use combined with low cost maintenance, all the while remaining compliant with Road Traffic Authority regulations. DCS says careful consideration has been taken into account with the development of the machine for the safety of both the operator and the system. The Extractor Unit’s specifications include a 9,200 L capacity debris collector body and water tanks with a total capacity of 6,000 L, as well as industry leading pumps, hydraulics and controls. With three key controlled stations – the system engagement from the driver’s cabin, system functions control via a handheld remote and a control panel with HMI display on the passenger side of the system – operators of the unit have full visibility of the water, vacuum and hydro excavation pump, boom and hose reel controls, the unloading controls and the system status indicators. Along with the transparency of control, DCS says the Extractor Unit is also equipped with

innovative safety systems such as a shut down mechanism when a low water level is reached to prevent pump damage from running dry, as well as sensing systems for excess weight and safety lockouts to ensure the operator’s safety. The machinery can also be personalised to a customer’s needs by the option of additional support equipment including specialised jetting
nozzles and varying tray sizes. “An extensive range of optional support equipment is also available, adding to the flexibility and diversity in a variety of maintenance and cleaning tasks,” says DCS. For more information visit www.dcsmanufacturing.com.au

COMPANY NEWS
Interflow Senior HSE Business Partner Troy Dawson.
Positive change flowing through the water sector The COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly changed the world and placed stress on the psychological wellbeing of many. In light of National Safe Work Month in October, Australia and New Zealand’s water industry has banded together to spotlight this critical issue – with Interflow leading the way to positive change.
A
s Australian communities begin to control the spread of COVID-19, there has been a call to shift the focus from ‘flattening the pandemic curve’ to ‘flattening the mental health curve’, with this year’s National Safe Work Month focusing on work health and safety through COVID-19. Since the onset of the pandemic, workplaces have had to quickly adapt practices to protect against the infection risks associated with COVID-19. Apart from the issues related
to physical health, the virus has also had a profound psychological effect on many. Throughout the month of October, employees and employers alike were encouraged to acknowledge and reflect on the wide-reaching impacts of COVID-19. In a bid to highlight the pandemic’s ‘intangible’ ramifications, this year’s theme prompted the water sector to discuss workplace health and safety (WHS) through a psychological lens, focusing on how the
82 TRENCHLESS AUSTRALASIA DECEMBER 2020
pandemic has affected the mental health of Australia’s essential workforce. It also highlighted the critical role mental health programs play in keeping workers safe. Navigating mental health through COVID-19 Prior to COVID-19, the topic of mental health was already a pressing issue for Australian communities, with mental illness affecting one in five Australians in any given year.
COMPANY NEWS
In addition to the social, emotional and financial challenges COVID-19 has presented, many frontline workers who provide essential services have experienced public scrutiny and abuse during the pandemic. This difficulty emphasised the importance of developing a robust WHS and mental health framework to support these people in their line of work. With a workforce of almost 600 people distributed across Australia and New Zealand, leading water infrastructure company, Interflow, is aware of the role a mentally healthy workplace plays in supporting its people through this difficult time. Interflow’s key to addressing mental health within the workplace has been establishing open two-way communication with its people in the office and field. Interflow Senior HSE Business Partner Troy Dawson says the business has adapted its mental health strategy to account for the additional challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“A key focus for Interflow throughout the COVID-19 period has been promoting our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), holding Stop and Reset Toolbox Talks, and providing resilience training as part of our Mentally Healthy Workplace Project,” he says. “Not only do these programs help our workforce feel recognised, engaged and supported – but they enable our people to identify the warning signs that someone may need assistance and then point them in the right direction.” Keeping WHS a priority The unique size, composition and geographical distribution of Australia and New Zealand’s water industry places significant challenges on its members when handling mental health issues. As second wave impacts of COVID-19 continue to emerge, the challenge for employers will be implementing
people-focused solutions to support the mental health of the essential workforce in the long-term. The water sector has adopted a collaborative approach to solving this issue, promoting the importance of mental health on an industry-wide scale through a combination of working groups, creative initiatives and information sharing. This camaraderie has not only sparked meaningful conversations about this critical topic, but has highlighted the fundamental desire for connection and community that humans all share. “The company’s approach has dug deep to the heart of the issue, which is that mental health issues can affect anyone at any time,” says Mr Dawson. “It’s in everyone’s best interests to hold ourselves accountable and prioritise the creation of a mentally healthy workplace for all.”

AUSJET21 expo and conference moves forward Plans for the dedicated water jet, drain and vacuuming technology exhibition and conference to be held in Melbourne in March 2021 are still moving forward.
T
he Australasian High Pressure Water Jetting Association (AUSJET), incorporating Australasian Drain Cleaning and Vacuum Association (ADCVA), is the peak national industrial services representative body with members across Australia and internationally. AUSJET/ADCVA President Peter Jones says the industry association is still moving forward with the first of its kind exhibition and conference; however, contingency plans have been put in place to reassure the industry that if the event is cancelled all funds invested will be refunded. “Victoria has been hit hard with the coronavirus and our industry along with many other businesses are struggling,” says Mr Jones. “Despite the uncertainty, we believe industry needs to be supported in Victoria and until we
hear anything different in terms of restrictions still in place by March, we’ve decided to forge ahead but with contingencies to reassure our members and industry.” Mr Jones says any commitments made by sponsors, exhibitors and businesses to attend AUSJET21 will have a full money back guarantee if the conference does not go ahead. “We would like to reassure interested businesses if you do commit to exhibiting there is no financial risk with only a small deposit required and a full money back guarantee if AUSJET21 doesn’t go ahead,” he says. “If companies do commit early, they will get value from free exposure via the E-Directory even if the conference doesn’t go ahead however, the decision date to determine if AUSJET21 will go ahead is 15 January. “If it’s decided not to go forward due
to COVID-19, your investment will be fully refunded.” Mr Jones says the creation of AUSJET21 is significant, as it is intended to unite the entire industry and more importantly inject some energy and excitement for what can be achieved in the water jetting and industrial vacuum sector. “The only thing certain in today’s business environment is change, significantly how global economies and industries rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic,” he says. “AUSJET21 is an important event as it helps put a focus on the industry and to bring together existing and new clients at the one time in the same place.” For more information visit www.ausjetconnect.com.au
