THE BGS STEAM PRECINCT – inspiring the next generation of leaders The STEAM Precinct will help BGS educate Australia’s future leaders, who will in turn work to improve the lives of those within their communities and solve some of the world’s most complex challenges.
Brisbane Grammar School’s new $70 million STEAM Precinct – open in early 2023 – will provide a world class facility to equip students with skills for the future.
The acronym STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics – refers not just to these disciplines but to the sharing of ideas across science subjects, the arts and humanities. Headmaster Anthony Micallef says the creative environment would inspire boys and teach them to tackle real-world problems across diverse disciplines. “With industry leaders demanding graduates skilled in critical and creative thinking, now is the time to invest boldly in infrastructure that will foster future innovators and problem solvers,” he says. QUT Professor and BGS Old Boy Michael Milford ’98, an expert in artificial intelligence and robotics, agrees. “I think blending the traditional sciences and the arts is absolutely critical. They were once seen as separate areas, but we now realise there’s a common theme of creativity and inspiration running through them. Merging them together makes eminent sense,” he says.
A 300-seat open auditorium will ensure students can showcase their projects and experience shared learning.
“When you already have great students and great teachers, having an amazing physical location to inspire, to learn and to nurture the future careers of
our next generation of scientists is the missing piece of the puzzle.” Given the rapid emergence of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, DNA mapping, robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, graduates need both the technical and social skills the STEAM Precinct will promote. “The leaders of the future will need to collaborate and communicate and think critically and creatively,” Micallef says. “It is these skills that will enable our graduates to adapt to the changing professional landscape and prepare them for jobs that don’t yet exist.” Educators now recognise content knowledge, while important, is not enough. Creative collaboration through inquiry, lateral thinking and communication enhances the traditional STEM subjects. The STEAM Precinct – open in 2023 – will help educate Australia’s future leaders, who will in turn work to improve the lives of those within their communities and solve some of the world’s most complex challenges.

WHAT IS THE REAL COST OF YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE? Education is one of the biggest investments you are likely to make to give your child a head-start in life. Understanding and preparing for the cost of education can make a big difference to the opportunities you can provide your child.
course of a 13-year school period. Secondary school fees are generally higher than for primary. And spending on older children for school camps and items such as sports equipment and musical instruments tends to increase for many.
For instance, the most prevalent barrier to parents’ choice of high schools for their child is cost. Once enrolled, the cost of schooling represents a substantial household expense.
Confidence starts with preparation The best way to take control of your child’s future is to plan and save to meet future education costs, and the first step is to create a personalised view of the true cost of your child’s education.
The Futurity Investment Group Planning For Education Index 2021* shows that, depending on a few factors, such as the type of school a child attends, the cost of education could vary from $66,603 to $340,882 for a child starting school in 2021. You can find the cost of your child’s education using the Futurity Cost of Education Calculator at futurity.me/coe-calculator. The hidden cost of education Regardless of school type, the cost of education includes more than just fees and parent contributions. Many times, this comes as a “cost shock” for families entering the public schooling system for the first time. The annual cost of schooling changes over the

Dr Lyn Bishop OAM pictured with Junior, Middle and Senior College students.
PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING Dr Lyn Bishop OAM, Principal of Sheldon College talks to WhichSchool? Magazine about how the College continues to evole, the importance of leadership, and building quality relationships. 10
How does the school’s philosophy and ethos guide you and your staff? The alignment of our College vision, mission and core values comprise the essence of who we are as a College and guide our daily practice. We believe fundamentally that relationships lie at the heart of the educational enterprise. Without quality relationships, schools have no meaning. At Sheldon College the quality of relationships is built around our philosophy of “Love, Laughter and Learning.” Our role as educators is to create a learning environment where children feel safe, valued and loved; where learning is fun; and where opportunities are created that enable all students to become lifelong learners. Schools are not comprised of buildings, and bricks and mortar, but are a living expression of their guiding philosophy. The home and the school, working together, are two of the most powerful influences on earth. It has often been said that, “What the homes are, the schools will be, and what the two are, the future will be.” How does Sheldon College differ from other schools? I believe we are more alike than we are different from other schools. No school is immune in education today from the society in which we exist. We must all be agile, innovative and adaptive, and we can’t do that in isolation from one another. Our strength and survival as a nation rests on schools becoming learning communities that work together

in forging strategic partnerships, not only with one another, but with universities, business and industry on a world stage. There is far greater strength in a unity of purpose and our students deserve that. We need schools with impact -schools that add value, not only to their own school and its community, but also to the nation. In what ways has the school evolved over the past 10 to 20 years? Given that we are a school that is only 23 years old, we have experienced rapid growth and transformation in light of the technological revolution we are all experiencing - one that has seen our world become increasingly diverse, globalised, complex and media-saturated. Our learning environment for our students continues to evolve and be built around new learning paradigms, leading to some highly flexible spaces for collaborative, multimodal learning, supported by ubiquitous access to mobile technologies. Existing classroom spaces are continually being converted to suit more inquiry based paradigms and new spaces that reflect the strategic intent of our College. We are driven by the knowledge that it is the learner who shapes not only the learning environment, but also the pedagogy which accompanies it. How do you provide support and leadership to your staff? I believe first and foremost one has to create an environment that promotes shared and distributed
leadership within the organisation. Leadership is anyone and everyone, and it resides at all levels of the organisation. As school leaders we need to become strategic architects who focus our attention on building organisational capabilities that can foster continuous growth and innovation. We have to transform our traditional command-and-control organisations to new high performance work systems. Our job is to build bridges across coalitions and assist teams to work together creatively to build relationships, identify issues and to work together creatively to solve problems. How do you encourage wellbeing among your staff and students? The COVID-19 pandemic saw a dramatic increase in issues related to the general health and wellbeing of both staff and students. The home learning environment saw students craving a sense of belonging and connectedness. Similar circumstances arose with the pressure placed on teachers to deliver home learning through a digital learning ecosystem. The impact of these changes has seen us develop a Positive Wellbeing Framework. The framework provides the foundations to ensure students and staff can achieve our Student Exit Outcomes by feeling connected, safe and secure and through being active partners in the student’s learning journey. What role do you play in the day-to-day activities of the students? First and foremost, I think it is vitally important for a Principal to understand that true leadership and management is not a series of mechanical tasks, but a set of human interactions, and therefore it is vitally important that a Principal be highly visible in the school environment. This includes being in classrooms on a daily basis, in the playground engaging and interacting with students, in attending their sporting and cultural events, in taking an interest in their out of school activities, in engaging with students and their parents on every available opportunity, and above all, having every student know and understand that you are there for them. What are some of the challenges faced by teachers in the secondary sector? Teachers today have a challenging role particularly post COVID. The closure of schools and the sudden move to online learning required them to become more flexible, adaptive and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders. Furthermore teachers have been forced to explore their own business ecosystem

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING... to generate intellectual capital within the organisation so that the strategic intent of the overall organisation is met. Effective and successful leaders must be able to let go of the past - to be able to challenge many of the old models, paradigms, strategies and assumptions about education that simply don’t hold up in today’s competitive environment. They have to possess strong social and emotional intelligence; have excellent interpersonal relationships, strategic thinking ability, place a high emphasis on values, ethics and integrity, be flexible, agile and innovative, and focus on continuous improvement and quality outcomes in all that they do. Leadership is not a job based on power and authority, but a function based on principles, people skills, and the ability to engage others in consensual decision-making and problem solving. and examine ways in which they can further disrupt or differentiate learning within a changing environment. They have also been challenged by the need for improved communication with all stakeholders. This has led to a need for greater collaboration, transparency and above all ensuring the psychological safety of both students and staff. What has been your most memorable moment, either as a teacher or specifically in the role of principal? The most memorable moment for me in my career was winning a federal appeal to open Sheldon College after being knocked back by the New Schools Commission. We had to overcome insuperable obstacles in the early stages of the College’s development, including not having any financial backing to open a new school; to major personal financial outlays in undertaking demographic studies, market research, viability studies; to having our own home go up as collateral to the bank for many years; to asking family and friends to act as guarantors to the bank; to facing bitter opposition from other schools in the district who did not want a competitor on their doorstep; to neighbours who opposed a school being built on the current site and considered it as “visual pollution”; to seeking innumerable approvals from local authorities; to selecting and purchasing a site of 55 acres or so to build a school in a metropolitan area at an affordable price with no financial backing from any church, business or financier; to setting up our school every Sunday afternoon in the Pine Lodge Equestrian Centre and pulling it down every Friday afternoon because the current site was not ready

when the school year began; and to encouraging parents and teachers to buy into a vision and help make that dream become a reality. What traits make for an effective and successful leader in education today? Any successful leader in education today needs to have a covenant of purpose - to know what is important, where they collectively take a stand, and around what basis decisions are made. They must be able to articulate a clear vision for their organisation one that is driven by intensity and passion, and then have the capacity to align it with the organisation’s mission and core values. They must possess the capacity to grow leadership ability in their people and
What are your feelings about NAPLAN and its effectiveness? NAPLAN has its place purely as a diagnostic tool that informs our pedagogy. Unfortunately, standardised testing and the publication of league tables have cast one of the greatest shadows over our profession in my opinion. We are becoming test-preparation factories where the human, interpersonal side of learning gets lost in widespread standardised testing and international assessment comparisons. Our children are being tested to an extent that is unprecedented in our history. The current climate that pits school against school, based largely on the results of standardised testing, does little to improve the educational outcomes for our most prized national treasure that of our young people. Good schools are, and must remain values driven, not data driven.

THE CASE FOR
CONVERSATION Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s podcast series, Illumine, is a space for considered thought and friendly debate about all things related to secondary education. In each episode, Girls Grammar Principal, Jacinda Euler, interviews school staff, students and guests about important, current topics and trends — from financial literacy and women in leadership, to sexual consent education and the development of critical thinking skills. Schools have long been the homes of the mind, spaces within which teachers and students are free to discuss, debate and question—discerning fact from fiction, considering alternative viewpoints, and creating an environment where the value of deep thinking is clearly understood. Brisbane Girls Grammar School knows that education is transformative. Schools offer a valuable space for students to practise raising their voices, critically assessing issues that are important to them, and engaging in meaningful conversation about constructive change. The BGGS podcast, Illumine, launched in 2020, offers the opportunity for students and staff to discuss and debate important issues with me. So far, Illumine has covered topics such as the importance of self-care during uncertain times, critical thinking in
the English classroom and, more recently, women in leadership, in which the school’s Chair of the Board of Trustees, Julie McKay, joined me to discuss the many achievements, and challenges that remain, for women in leadership roles. Illumine offers a medium for rigorous examination and discussion of contemporary issues, providing girls and young women a safe space to develop their views and, ultimately, a platform to have their voices heard. We also encourage our students to have these robust and meaningful discussions in classrooms and homes—and support expression and respectful debate of the full range of views. Rather than shielding young people from the conversations they will encounter now and in their lives beyond school, we should prioritise developing their critical thinking skills and equip them to thrive in a world in which they will face issues that confront

and challenge them. At BGGS, immersive learning experiences such as this—within the classroom and beyond—inspire students to dare to dream, without fear of failure, and to test the unfamiliar. Students embrace independence within a supportive environment, and develop enduring life and leadership skills that prepare them for full and rewarding lives after school. With the support of a strong and purposefully engaged community that shares a belief in the importance of educating girls, and values the finest traditions and aspirations in education, Brisbane Girls Grammar School and its students aim to face the future with confidence and optimism. QA &
With Christopher Mountford
Chief Executive Officer of Independent Schools Queensland
Selecting the right school to bring out the best in a child has always been a big decision for families. Parental opinions and beliefs about education are influenced by a multitude of factors, including personal school experiences. In 2020, many parents were given a rare, behind-thescenes glimpse of contemporary schooling when learning moved from the classroom to the dining room during Queensland’s COVID-19 lockdown. During this period, many parents also experienced the community of their school – the families, teachers and supporters who rally, comfort, inspire and support each other during times of adversity – in a way they may never have experienced before. In 2020, there was no shortage of community spirit
in Queensland’s independent schooling sector. From virtual cross-country events involving entire school communities, to regular family wellbeing check-ins, virtual parent-teacher interviews, longdistance book pack deliveries, and community letter writing campaigns, every effort was made to keep students learning, school communities connected and spirits high. What information do parents rely on to choose an independent school? The personal school experience – traditionally gained through a school Open Day or school visit - is one of the most valued sources of information parents rely on when choosing a school for their child. So too is the advice of family, friends and colleagues, according

to parent insights captured in a long-running survey conducted by Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) – the peak body representing the state’s more than 220 independent schools. Parents have rated these two forms of school endorsement among the most influential factors in their school decision-making process since the first ISQ What Parents Want survey in 2006. This is despite the rise of contemporary information sources such as social media and the My School website. However, there are differences between generations of parents. The most recent 2018 ISQ survey revealed that unsurprisingly, Generation Y parents in their early 30s and younger are more likely than older generations to find school social media very useful. What role do children play in choosing their own school? Children are also having a greater say in where they will attend school. According to the ISQ survey findings 45 percent of parents of primary-aged students said their choice of school was “totally or highly influenced” by their child’s opinion. This rose to 60 percent of parents with secondary-aged students. Parents of boarding students were more likely to be influenced by their child’s opinion with 75 percent of these families “totally or highly influenced”. Why do parents choose independent schools? The “why” of parental choice goes to the heart of a school’s culture, mission, education approach and offerings and how a parent believes this will bring out the best in their child. The top reason parents choose independent schools is their belief that the school will help realise their child’s potential. This has remained unchanged over ISQ’s 12-year survey series. However, compared to earlier years, families today

are placing a greater emphasis on personalised learning and quality teaching. They are looking beyond black and white test results and favouring schools that foster a broader range of capabilities, skills and character traits they believe will best develop their child’s confidence, independence and community responsibility to help prepare them for the future. Queensland’s independent schooling sector offers families a diverse range of schooling options. There are schools that educate children from Prep to Year 12 and those that only cater for primary or secondary students. There are coeducational schools, single-sex schools, distance education schools and boarding schools. The majority of independent schools have a religious affiliation, while the remainder are guided by their individual school missions and educational philosophies. Some independent schools have been operating for more than 150 years, which speaks volumes about the history, experience, value and contribution the sector has made and continues to make to the state through its talented and inspiring graduates.
Parental confidence in the sector continues to grow. Sector enrolments grew by 4.5 percent between August 2019 and 2020 and indicative data shows student numbers lifted again at the start of 2021 by about 5 percent compared to the start of the 2020 school year. The highest growth rate of any education sector. Share your views in ISQ’s next What Parents Want survey If your child is already enrolled at a Queensland independent school, keep an eye out for ISQ’s next What Parents Want survey. The survey will be going out to independent school parents this year with the report findings published in early 2022.

BE CONFIDENT A Brisbane Boys’ College education seeks to instil many competencies and qualities in each graduate.
A BBC boy should be a critical thinker and problem solver; creative, communicative and collaborative. He should be curious, persistent, adaptable and willing to take initiative. He should possess leadership qualities and be socially and culturally aware. He should be able to love and be loved. To be all of these things, he must first be ‘Confident’. Where does confidence come from? Is it learned from a boy’s parents? Teachers? Faith? Experience? It comes from all of these but, most importantly, it must come from within the boy himself. While there is no one way to guarantee a boy will grow into a confident young man, there are many ways to encourage and support it. In a world where knowledge-based learning is no longer enough, and qualities such as resilience and confidence are essential ingredients for success, it is imperative that boys are instilled with the skills and tools to learn from their failures, and try again.
While respecting the values of its past, BBC embraces new ways of teaching, learning and caring to prepare boys to succeed in the modern world.

Confidently turning adversity into opportunity and knowing that while they may not be able to do something yet, they are developing the skills to find solutions and strategies for life’s many challenges. The College’s innovative approach to education integrates best-practice teaching and learning with the science of wellbeing, placing an emphasis on equipping each student with the confidence and capability to reach their potential in today’s modern world. In doing so, Brisbane Boys’ College is safeguarding the most important ingredient to a boy’s success: confidence. At BBC, this approach is referred to as A New School of Thought, and it represents a new way of thinking about teaching and learning. A NEW
TEACHING & LEA The Moreton Bay Colleges want all members of its community to be agentic learners.
The Moreton Bay Colleges highlight how education plays a vital role in developing the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral and spiritual characteristics of any child.
In today’s fast-paced world, children need to be able to process and evaluate the abundance of information at their fingertips. In addition to this, they must also learn to navigate their social environment in a way that engenders trust and expresses authenticity. In our twenty-first century, communication and relationship development are skills for success; and we believe that children need to be flexible, resilient, and creative, with the ability to remain curious so that they may keep on learning throughout their lives. At The Moreton Bay Colleges, we are proud to launch our new Teaching and Learning Approach. To provide an outstanding student experience, teachers at The Moreton Bay Colleges ensure that learning environments are collaborative, supportive
18
and productive, that the Colleges promote student agency through an inquiry-based curriculum and that our students are challenged to be curious, agile and reflective thinkers so that they may contribute meaningfully to our globally connected community. Our Teaching and Learning approach fosters the development of: • Curious teachers and students who are creative and critical in their thinking and who have a strong desire to learn and grow. • Agile teachers and students who are not only open-minded but who are confident to take risks on their learning journey. • Collaborative teachers and students who practise empathy and who work respectfully in teams to bring out the best in each other. • Reflective teachers and students who embrace the growth mindset and who not only try new approaches to learning and but also evaluate their effectiveness; and
RNING APPROACH • Agentic teachers and students who advocate responsibly and respectively and who have a genuine belief that they can make a difference in this world.
By providing progressive and purposeful learning and transformative assessment opportunities, we endeavour to foster future-focussed, global citizens.
Over the past three years, students, parents, teachers and Leadership staff from Primary and Secondary across the five sub-schools of both Colleges have been working together in a development process to create our unique Teaching and Learning Approach - to ensure that we all have a collective understanding of what we value as a learning community.
Ultimately, by engaging students in learning
processes that foster deep understanding and, by working in partnership to develop a truly collaborative approach, The Moreton Bay Colleges, as an entire community of learners, provide experiences for growth in a safe, happy and connected environment.
When you consider the five approaches – Agency, Collaboration, Agility, Curiosity and Reflection - it is important to understand that this applies to all members of our learning community – students, teachers, parents, and the broader community. We want all members of our community to be agentic learners; so that we may all have voice, choice, and ownership of our learning journeys. We want our teachers to be deliberate and focussed in their instructional design so that the curriculum they deliver in their classrooms is not only accessible by all, but that it also encourages curiosity and agile thinking. We encourage and foster a collaborative environment and provide opportunities to rethink, revise and reflect on the learning process to enable and encourage future improvement.
The Moreton Bay Colleges have launched its new Teaching and Learning Approach.
The development of this teaching and learning approach was only possible because our teachers, students and parents, lived the experience. We have spent many hours in workshops challenging one another to consider what is vital to our learning community, as well as what is unique about Teaching and Learning at The Moreton Bay Colleges. At The Moreton Bay Colleges, we believe that learning is at the heart of our inclusive Christian community. We have a shared responsibility to prioritise teaching and learning through the delivery of an innovative and differentiated curriculum.
The Colleges foster a collaborative environment to encourage future improvements.

As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice Tradition, Nudgee College’s values and beliefs are shaped by the touchstones of Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, and Justice and Solidarity. The College’s Social Justice Program is one way in which students are called to put these values into action. From charitable fundraising to service and advocacy initiatives, this program allows students to develop empathy and compassion, break down stereotypes, and develop a genuine desire to work towards a better world for all. Every year level is provided the experience to attend retreats, which allow students to take time away from the busyness of school life for reflection, prayer and collaboration with their peers. The Year 10 Immersion Program is a particular highlight of the retreat calendar, and gives students the opportunity to stand in solidarity with the marginalised, hear stories of those from different backgrounds, and develop an awareness of their own value and individuality. In the classroom, students are challenged to explore their spirituality through Religious Education. Through reflection on the Gospel message and its influence on many significant characters in the Church and in political history, students explore the place these values, ethics and responsibilities have in our daily lives. The liturgical life of the College is one of community and ritual, with several Masses and liturgies held each year to celebrate or commemorate, as well as the regular weekly Masses for the Boarding community.

Brisbane Boys’ College A New School of Thought A Brisbane Boys’ College (BBC) education is designed to develop boys’ minds to be forward thinking and encourage them to explore their passions and purpose, so they can reach their potential and become confident and capable young men. Dr Leigh Hobart, Deputy Headmaster Academic Performance and Innovation (P-12) says the College’s innovative New School of Thought approach to education integrates best-practice teaching and learning with the science of wellbeing to enhance student resilience, capacity and confidence. “The College’s academic results and tertiary outcomes demonstrate a commitment to the highest academic standards and the importance of supporting boys to reach their goals. “Our robust approach to teaching and learning consistently places BBC among the top performing schools in Queensland, with three of our recent graduates achieving the highest ATAR (99.95), ranking them in the top 30 Year 12 students across the State.” Building on the College’s reputation for highquality academic offerings, an Honours Program

has been embedded into the curriculum to provide highly able students with opportunities to refine their talents and realise their potential. Launched to more than 120 students in Years 5, 7 and 10, the successful program will roll out across the College in 2022. “The BBC Honours Program champions student wellbeing and seeks to shape academic talent into strength awareness and ultimately, mastery. “The program offers academic extension, enrichment and acceleration to high performing and high potential students across our Junior, Middle and Senior Schools and becomes more bespoke to specific interests and passions as boys mature. It also includes access to super curriculum offerings beyond the classroom,” said Dr Hobart. In our ever-changing world it has never been more important for boys to have a well-rounded approach to life as part of their education. “We must teach our students foundational literacies: numeracy, scientific literacy, language literacy, ICT literacy, cultural and civic literacy; as well as key 21st century competencies such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication and collaboration.

“At BBC we recognise the importance of providing boys with a wide range of academic, sporting, co-curricular, service and cultural pursuits. When combined with our Positive Education Framework this helps boys pursue interests that complement their formal education and fosters a sense of self to help them realise their potential. “To support this growth we must also build their character qualities such as curiosity, initiative, persistence, adaptability, leadership and social and cultural awareness so that they can move confidently into the world and make a positive contribution to society.” By developing graduates with strong foundational knowledge and creative and curious minds, BBC prepares boys to step confidently into life beyond school, positively contributing to society on a local, national and international scale and flourishing in their chosen career.

Saint Stephen’s College Saint Stephen’s College is an Early Learning to Year 12, co-educational Christian school, known for leading in future-focused education. Parents living on the Gold Coast want the best education for their child, but they don’t want them to become just a number in a big school. So how do they find not just a school, but a community, or better yet, a family? A place where their child will be cared for and supported to discover and build their own unique future? Saint Stephen’s College was founded in 1995 to solve this problem. The founders’ vision was to provide a high quality, and future-focused, Christian education that would bring technology to the forefront of learning. Powered by this vision and ambition to drive education forward, the College has continued its proud tradition of teaching excellence to develop young minds to be the leaders of the next generation. Saint Stephen’s College takes this duty very seriously. The role of challenging each and every student to achieve their unique personal best is a guiding vision, however it is the Saint Stephen’s community that evokes greater pride. The College community is strengthened by its diversity. It takes a village to raise a child and at Saint Stephen’s, families can find a place where they can truly belong.

Grace Lutheran College 1978
Grace Lutheran College is one College with two campuses, Rothwell and Caboolture. It is a community-based, co-educational private high school based on Brisbane northside. It is open to all families who are willing to support the college ethos, without discrimination as to class, race or belief. Each of the campuses has a wide range of unique offerings and opportunities, ensuring every student has the chance to explore all their God-given gifts and talents. At Grace, every student is encouraged to learn and serve according to ‘The Grace Way’ – characterised by Grit, Growth and Grace. Upon enrolment, students at Grace enter into the GEL program - a support and guidance program offered by college. GEL (Grow. Empower. Learn.) is a commitment to each student, to ensure he/she feels they belong to their community and has the fullest possible opportunity for spiritual, personal, social, physical and academic growth. At Grace, “we know that not everyone is a scholar, not everyone is good with their hands, not everyone is good on the sports field or dance floor, but everyone is good at something.”
Rothwell and Caboolture both offer innovative, 21st century based learning that provides students with a wealth of opportunities. They offer a variety of sporting, cultural and service activities that students can take part in. “I don’t need to be the best IN the world, but to do my best FOR the world.” Year 11 Grace student. A crucial part of the Grace curriculum is ServiceLearning. This is embedded in the curriculum, and students are encouraged to unpack and understand the needs and stories of those they are going to serve. Service-learning opportunities include supporting a local aged care facility with textile donations, visits and contributions to their dementia therapy program, and through connections with Indonesia partner schools. Grace Lutheran College also has three partner primary schools: St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School, Caboolture; Living Faith Lutheran Primary School, Murrumba Downs; and Grace Lutheran Primary School, Clontarf. This unique schooling system offers the chance for families to immerse themselves in a school culture that is compassionate, concerned with the individual and

Brisbane Boys’ College Band of boarding brothers not defined by distance Home is not a place it is a feeling. This adage holds true for Brisbane Boys’ College (BBC) boarding students who revel in the strong sense of brotherhood and camaraderie that living together on campus evokes. Since 1909 the tradition of boarding has played an important role at BBC providing boys from around the corner, on the land, interstate and overseas with a welcoming home and access to a quality education. According to Mr Matthew McEwen, Director of Boarding, young men from all corners of the globe enjoy the camaraderie that boarding affords, building lifelong friendships as they participate in the academic, sporting, co-curricular, service, and cultural activities on offer at BBC. “When boarders walk onto campus they soon realise this place is more than just a school, it’s their home. The boys that sit beside them aren’t just their classmates, they are their brothers. Miskin Oval is not just a sports field, it’s their backyard. This is the brotherhood that bonds our BBC boarders,” said Mr McEwen.

Living away from family can be challenging, yet it enables boarders to embrace a strong sense of camaraderie and immerse themselves in a residential program tailored to extend their classroom learning, encourage leadership and nurture their social and emotional wellbeing. The College’s residential curriculum provides intentional learning opportunities for boarders, developing their academic skills alongside life skills, teamwork and resilience to see them emerge as competent, independent young men with the confidence and capability to change the world. Along with a comprehensive recreational, cultural and wellbeing program, all boarders are supported in their academic development by experienced BBC teachers who facilitate the evening academic program, with additional subject-specific tutorials also available. The unique size of the boarding house enables staff to forge authentic relationships with each boy, with Boarding Coordinators, Resident Masters, onsite School Counsellors and a College Chaplain offering additional care.

“Guidance for boys who live away from home is a great responsibility. Our ability to care for and educate boys rests on our ability to connect with them and provide support as an extension of the home. Living on campus allows boarders to embrace a strong sense of brotherhood and family as they are supported to make the most of their time at the College,” said Mr McEwen. Recent refurbishments to the boarding precinct have reinforced a strong sense of place and a connected community as each boy has his own sleeping and private study space, while common areas and group study spaces encourage interaction. “The camaraderie felt by BBC boarders has echoed throughout the campus for more than 110 years. Boarders enrich our BBC community through their presence and contribution to the life of the College. Without them, the campus simply does not feel as vibrant.” A: Kensington Terrace, Toowong QLD 4066 T: +61 7 3309 3500 E: admissions@bbc.qld.edu.au W: www.bbc.qld.edu.au

Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School has a proud history of providing flexible and high quality boarding programs to students from diverse local and international backgrounds. Cribb House is the onsite home of our boarding family, located in the middle of our bustling campus, and offers many unique opportunities to boarding students. Research confirms that boarders develop close friendships and values through resilience, tolerance, flexibility and independence, often much earlier than others who are not given the same educational opportunities. Being an active part of the Cribb House community presents boarders the opportunity to access additional academic help from tutors and the School’s library and learning resources after school, enjoy the security and pastoral care given to boarders who are supervised in a supportive environment and develop great friendships and personal qualities such as independence, resilience, flexibility and respect for the rights of others.

Students come from many countries to study at IGGS. Our boarding students are amazing young women who are resilient and caring individuals. The boarders support each other and are likewise supported by caring, professional staff in a safe, modern boarding house situated at the heart of the School.
Confident well-educated young women
Cribb House is a dynamic and busy home-away-from-home where your daughter will make friends for life as she shares the fun and excitement – and the trials and tribulations – of growing into a confident, well-educated young woman.
St Joseph’s Nudgee College The boarding community has been at the heart of St Joseph’s Nudgee College since its founding in 1891. For 130 years Nudgee College has been providing outstanding care for boarding students from around Australia and beyond. The Bathersby Boarding Village is a contemporary and inviting home away from home for 300 boarders from Years 5 to 12. Each boy has his own individual room within one of the four Boarding Houses, with a large green space at the centre of the Boarding Village used for many planned and impromptu social gatherings throughout the year. The high quality of this residential facility complements the high quality of care provided by our professional staff. Boarders are supported academically by the ‘Reach for the Stars’ tutoring program, during which teachers from many subjects help our boys with homework, assignments and preparation for exams. Registered Nurses staff the 24-hour on campus Health Centre, in addition to weekly visiting GPs and specialists. Beyond the Boarding Village, our boarders have access to a 136-hectare property that includes modern facilities as well as a wide range of sporting, cultural and recreational activities. Like all students who attend Nudgee College, our boarders will experience a dynamic learning environment and diverse curriculum offerings that will challenge and develop their individual talents. As one of the country’s leading boarding schools, Nudgee College is committed to providing students with a unique educational experience and one that moulds an independent, empathetic, culturally aware young man who is able to fulfil his potential.
