These Roots Run Deep
We have probably always known the pedigrees of our cows better than that of our own family but here is a brief history of the generations of Stephensons and Shorthorns!
340 years ago in 1684, Mr George Stephenson, of Acklam bought a cow of the Aislabie family. He sent cows to Studley, to be served, and used bulls from Studley, in the possession of Pennimans, of Ormsby. “In 1731, Mr George Stephenson Jr (son of the one named above,) removed from Acklam to Ketton, in Durham, and took with him the cattle descended from the original cow got of the Aislabies, and he took no others than those so descended in the female line only.” Hubback (319) is a son of a female procured from the cow family.
Hubback (319) was a foundation sire in both Charles and Robert Collings herds. He was in the pedigree of the dam of Favourite.
In 1825, Belvedere (1706) was born. He was bred by John Stephenson of Wolviston. John Stephenson was a great grandson of George Stephenson. Thomas Bates purchased Belvedere as a six year old in 1831. Belvedere was used heavily by Bates and his famous bull, Duke of Northumberland (1940) was sired by him as was the Duke’s dam Duchess 34th.
Jasper W Stephenson was born in Northumberland in 1885 where his family had Shorthorn cattle. Jasper immigrated to Alberta in 1907. Jasper was the great grandson of John Stephenson, Belvedere’s breeder. He started a purebred Shorthorn herd in 1918 near Cayley Alberta. Jasper used the herd name Newbiggon, after one of the famous Stephenson Farms in England. This herd was maintained until the mid1960’s. In 1965 D. H. (Herb) Stephenson established the Frimley herd when he purchased Braeside Rosy Dawn, a daughter of Garykolno Rosy Dawn. She was a 1600 lb show cow which was larger than average for the time. Descendants of this cow are in many of our pedigrees and direct descendants are at Andre Vrona’s A & C herd in England. Another foundation cow came with a group of females purchased in 1969 from W.R. Pethybridge, of Tees, AB. A cow named Susan 86Z by Boa Kae Monarch 2nd has had a tremendous influence at Diamond. This cow’s descendants are still in the herd today. Her descendants are spread all across North America as well as in Ireland and Great Britain. A son, Frimley Invader 6F was a herd bull used by A. R. Sandy Cross in his Rothney herd.
Herb’s daughter, Terry and husband Gary Carter took over Jasper’s herd name of Newbiggon. They purchased Shorthorns in 1969. In 1972 they imported 4 head of cattle from Mandalong in Australia. Mandalong Super Flag, Mandalong Royal Ferrari, Mandalong Roany 51st and Mandalong Roany 55th. These animals had a major influence on Shorthorn genetics. Both Super Flag and Ferrari are still used by AI to this day, as are the full Australian sons that Gary raised. . Terry is still a Shorthorn member.
Dan Stephenson went to work for Cecil Staples of Bindloss, Alberta in 1974. Cecil’s herd was Diamond Shorthorns. He had established his herd with some big functional cows. Three influential bulls used were Alta Cedar Welcome 5th, Thomas Max 11Z and Thomas Leader 13C. The most influential foundation cow was the large dark red female, Rockville Clipper 4G. She was born in 1952. When Cecil Staples dispersed his herd in 1976, he transferred the Diamond herd name and the Double Diamond left rib brand to Dan. Diamond May 5th had been purchased from Cecil by Herb and Dan in 1973. More Diamond females were added at the dispersal. Today our Dottie’s and May’s all descend from Rockville Clipper 4G. She descends directly from the Amos Cruickshank foundation cow Clipper by Billy (Aberdeen, Scotland) When we purchased Diamond May 5th the Clarks of Bassano, Alberta purchased Diamond Dottie 2nd. At Crowfoot she produced Crowfoot Flag,6H, sire of Gafa Mohican, the sire of the Eionmor Gus. Jill went to Crowfoot and purchased the nine year old Crowfoot Dottie 9F who was the daughter of Thomas Leader 13C and out of Diamond Dottie 2nd. She along with Diamond Super Dottie 9H are the ancestresses of the Dottie’s in the Diamond Herd today.
One of the most impactful bulls from Diamond who was bred in the 1980’s was Diamond Xerxes 8X. He was a son of Deer Trail Private Eye and out of Huberdale CSF Suzette 8L. This bull sold to Major John Gibb, Glenisla in Scotland. This is one of the most influential herds in Great Britain. Diamond Xerxes 8X left many offspring and he is in the background of many British cattle today. Two more bulls were flown to Scotland to be used at Glenisla in the 1990’s, Diamond Dakota 2D and Diamond Fortune 22F. Later embryos and semen were sent overseas. Embryos
out of Diamond Dottie 55G were sent to Smallburn Farms in Scotland. More recently embryos went to Andre Vrona’s A & C Farms. These were out of several donors, representing the Dawn, Susan, Candy, Clare and May families. Tommy Staunton of Caramba Shorthorns, Ireland also had embryos from Frimley Wedgewood Clare 2W and Diamond Hilary Susan 48H.
Over the years herd bulls have been purchased from across Canada and many States in the US. As well as using Mandalong Super Flag and Mandalong Royal Ferrari other Australian sires have also been used by AI in the herd. Recently The Grove Kookaburra W734 and Royalla Rockstar K274 have been used.
Today Dan and Jill Stephenson’s daughters and their families are involved in the herd. Both Vikram and Veronica each have a heifer calf by Diamond Hendrix 2H and no doubt Katie will have a heifer in a couple of years! These are the great, great grandchildren of Jasper who established the Stephenson family in Canada.

WelcomE
We would like to welcome you to the Diamond Shorthorns Generations Sale! This sale is celebrating the many generations of cattle behind the lots being offered. It is also celebrating a remarkable 340 years of Shorthorn cattle in the Stephenson family since George Stephenson first bought Shorthorns. It was George who established the cow family that later produced Hubback, a foundation sire of the breed. Please see a brief history in this catalogue.
Years of selection have gone into the Diamond breeding program so we are not just selling cattle but we are selling time, something no one has enough of. As well as selecting for functional cattle we have been recording birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights. Many years we have also scanned our yearlings for carcass data. We test for genetic defects and have genomically enhanced EPD’s on all our herd bulls and all the bulls we sell as herd sires.
We hope you can join us for some socializing and hospitality on November 21st. If this is not possible, please join on DLMS online!
If you have any questions or need further information, please do contact us!

LOT 1 Diamond Motivator 26M When Motivator arrived unassisted and vigorous, he already looked like a fantastic herd sire. He has been a favorite of many of our visitors. Cecil Staples used to say an outstanding bull calf off of a two year old should leave productive daughters. A unique pedigree with JSF Ronan 5H, ARG Hector 1777, Royalla Rockstar K274 and Diamond Prophecy 21P in his immediate background. Sells with SNP DNA and free by pedigree of all known defects.
LOT 2 Diamond Kara Dottie 6K. We feel this good young female has proven her potential with her first calf. Diamond Kara Dottie is a combination of world genetics that comes together in this moderate maternal powerhouse. There is little doubt that this young cow will produce some outstanding replacement females and exceptional herd sires. She weaned off a calf well over 50% of her body weight. Her sire ARG Hector 1777 and maternal grandsire Royalla Rockstar K274 need little introduction as household names around the world. The Dottie cow family is prolific and has left its mark throughout North America, notably through Diamond Helena Dottie 12H, the dam of DF Waco and B Good Dottie and the paternal granddam to Hill Haven Fire Storm 28C. Frimley Rene Dottie 72R was a prolific donor for Horseshoe Creek with offspring in many countries. Kara is AI’ed to the Supreme Champion at Brandon Ag Ex Hatfield Andrew 71H, a cross we are confident in.

Northern Legend 3N is in the top 2% of the breed for WW. It would be hard to find such herd bull power in a pedigree. We feel this young sire is as exciting as they come: thick, hairy, stout, athletic moving, with extension through the front third. When we decided to do the Generation Sale, we immediately knew we would be offering this young sire. Tested free of all known defects

Sired by Mapleton Grande Fillet M2G, this heritage influence bull is an exciting outcross to most Shorthorn pedigrees. He started out at a moderate 82lb birthweight and weaned off at 60% of his dam weight in the fall. A soft-made, unique individual with a very exciting future ahead of him. He is offered as a feature in the Generation Sale. 41M sells with SNP DNA and is free by pedigree for all known defects. We feel so highly of his dam Diamond Candy Kisses 9K that we are offering the opportunity to flush her next spring in Lot 36.
Two Year Old Females
In 2022 our calf crop was nearly 70% heifers. Two years later we offer some of the best to you. They have all raised their first calf and are bred back giving you the opportunity to select a proven young cow entering the prime of her productive life. They represent our best cow families and are sired by top bulls from around the world or by Matlock Crusin’ 2H, a bull that left some great daughters.
A moderate, deep-bodied, and soggy female are the first thoughts that pop to mind when thinking of this very special Maid cow. We are more than confident that Kind Maid, who is an ARG Hector 1777 daughter, will click with Diamond Lithium Energy 8L, who is a son of breed legend Muridale Thermal Energy 28A and Dottie 49Y. Her first calf is a fancy heifer, and we are excited to retain her in the Diamond herd.

Her paternal grandsire is a bull who needs no introduction Royalla Rockstar K274 and her dam has JSF Addicted 82U as well as Crooked Post Stockman 4Z. Lady Maria combines genetics from world renowned herds such as Belmore, Crooked Post, Diamond, Saskvalley, and Six S, to name a few. An attractive female with phenotype to match her pedigree, I am excited about the Diamond Lucrative 25L calf she carries for 2025.

Greg Parker is among the happiest, most personable people I’ve ever met. He and his wife came into Shorthorns and have been carefully building their herd. They have supported several breeders in their selections of their foundation herd. Unfortunately, Greg Parker was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer but Greg is determined to beat it!. His amazing wife Corine has been by his side and has had a crash course in farming, including calving, feeding, and even treating calves. We decided to sell this amazing commercial heifer in the Chinese Auction style to help with the expenses and loss of income incurred by Greg’s illness. The final bid in each round will denote the bidder’s contribution to Greg Parker’s ongoing battle. Every $10 purchased represents one chance in the final draw to own Matilda. For example, if the final bid is $500, that buyer gets 50 chances at taking home the heifer.
