This was the way I was raised ... and this is the way I want to raise my kids. I wouldn’t trade it for anything

For as long as Troy can remember chuckwagon racing was his way of life and never doubted that some day he too would travel down the road from show to show with his own outfit and family by his side. It was a dream that he had at a young age and with out a doubt he would make it come true.

The name “Flad” is synonymous with chuckwagon racing. Troy is a second generation driver and son of the late great Herman Flad. Troy grew up on a family farming operation near the Alberta/Saskatchewan border outside the town of

Provost, Alberta. There along side his dad and brother they ran a 600 head of commercial cow operation long with a sizable grain operation. This is where you would find the flad boys for 8 months of the year but for the other 4 summer months they traveled down the road participating in a sport rich with heritage and tradition.

Eventually,Troy started his own family and has since moved to Warburg, Alberta where he and his wife Shannon and their 5 children carry the family tradition and way of life. “This was the way I was raised and this is the way I want to raise my kids. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!” Family plays such an important role for these drivers.Your best help and support system comes from those who love you the most. “These are the only people who feel the joy I do when I win and feel the same pain when I loose. They are the only individuals who have as much invested in the sport as I do. My success is their success!” It is no wonder that his three sons also have an interest in carrying on the family tradition and legendary Flad name. The oldest of three boys, Blaid, has his own outfit and wagon and competes on the Western Chuckwagon Association circuit. Gage, the middle son, is moving up the ranks in the Chuckwagon ritual and is entering into his first season of Outriding in 2017. “I am sure the other two boys when they are of age will be chomping at the bit to have their own outfits as well.” Troy takes great pride is showing the kids the “ropes” and teaching them animal husbandry and the very specific care of race horses. “Working with my family is a true blessing,What other profession would let you spend 24 hours a day during the summer with your kids while making the living doing something that you truly love.”
