CGA PRESIDENT’S REPORT

hat an exciting time to be apart of the Gelbvieh breed! This spring once again saw strong genetics marketed in many bull sales and private treaty arrangements with great success even though many parts of the country saw a feed shortfall. This tells me that Gelbvieh is an important part of profitable ranching operations and breeders should be commended for their dedication that has enhanced the breed. The CGA has started some new promotional initiatives with the goal of Gelbvieh being more visible in the beef marketplace. The roadside trailer advertisements have been very successful with prominent locations but we’re looking to do more! If a member has a location along a busy highway and sees the opportunity to advertise Gelbvieh please phone the office and they’ll be directed to the advertising committee. The CGA has also overhauled the website with a more modern feel as well as more smartphone compatibility. It is also equipped with a rotating banner for advertising space for a minimal fee, this can be a link to a farm website, bull sale catalogue, field day etc. We encourage members to supply animal photos to the CGA so we can
continually update the website keeping the fresh appearance. Go check it out! There’s also been breeder participation in the GrowSafe RFI trial at Olds College. Thanks to Hurlburt Livestock and Foursquare Farms for being the pioneering breeders in this initiative, I encourage others to participate as this will only enhance the breed’s data and platform. Another new event the CGA is proud to announce is the Gelbvieh Breeder School to be held at Olds College on August 10, 2019. This event will feature educational events including the GrowSafe trial as well as many other presentations and everyone is welcome to attend! In closing the CGA has tried to take the next step in breed promotion through various avenues and I feel its gaining momentum. The board is always looking for more potential promotional opportunities so don’t be afraid to contact the CGA board with ideas! Wishing everyone a great summer!

his year has and will continue to be very exciting for the Canadian Gelbvieh Association. Recently, we had Gelbvieh bulls start an RFI test at Olds College Alberta. Thank you to Kirk Hurlburt from Hurlburt Livestock and Roger Sayer from Foursquare farms for sending bulls. We look forward to adding their results into the database. These bulls will be on test until the end of June and can be viewed at the College. Thinking to future tests, it would be valuable to set up a pen of females to be tested, selecting for efficient females will make for an efficient cow herd. Efficiency is a heritable trait therefore these females will produce efficient progeny. Please contact the office if you are interested in RFI testing heifers or bulls this coming fall and next spring. We have launched the new website. This will serve as a handy resource when looking for information on programs, registry, performance, tutorials, and more to come. Under marketing you will find the new Gelbvieh e-store where you can order your Gelbvieh swag. If you have any suggestions for items to add please contact the office. The website also features a searchable member directory. We are featuring three advertising blocks on all pages of the website so that they will be viewed no matter what page the website viewer is on. These three blocks will cycle through all of the advertisements. These ads are links to what could be a website or sale catalogue. You may change the ad throughout the year to reflect whatever you would like advertised based on the season. The cost is $250 for the year and includes the design of your ad. Please contact the office if you are interested. This advertising package also allows you to put your sale catalogue on the website. If you wish to only put your sale catalogue on the website without placing an ad, the cost is $50.
The office has received many transfers for bulls sold this season. I encourage you to continue to make sure you are transferring your animals and keeping your herd in Digital Beef up to date. I would like to thank all of the members for completing their 2019 herd assessment in a timely fashion. The 2nd installment will be billed July 2nd. A reminder that all ET calves will need to have DNA parentage verification completed before they can be registered. When entering these calves in the birth screen if you uncheck the “register ?” button the calf will be recorded in the system with a UNGV number. Please use this UNGV number in the place of registration number when filling out the DNA request form. DNA turnaround time is 21 days from when the sample arrives at the lab, if the request has been made prior to sending in the sample. Please make sure that you are filling in your request form and sending it to the office. You can also now make your DNA requests online. Please visit the website or contact the office for directions. Save the date for August 10th. The Canadian Gelbvieh Association will be hosting its first Breeders School Field Day at Olds College, Alberta. There will be more information to come. All producers are welcome; we hope you can make it. Please spread the word. Thank you for everyone’s well wishes. We are happy that our daughter Amy is growing and doing well after her unexpected early arrival.

hope this message finds everyone healthy and with enough moisture to get the green grass growing. It has been another trying winter/spring, but as always, us cattle people find a way to get through it. In what had to be close to the longest cold streak in many years that started in February and carried on into the first part of March, takes a lot of extra work and care to get these babies to green grass, so good on you all. If your feed stacks were not already stretched to the limit after a tough summer last year, they were sure tested after this spring. I hope everyone made it through calving season relatively unscathed. I would like to congratulate the Gelbvieh breeders that held or participated in bull sales this spring. I was able to attend quite a few, and the quality was outstanding. One of the events coming up this year that I am excited to announce is the return of the ‘Canadian Peoples Choice Bull Futurity’ which again will be held in conjunction with our already outstanding Wish List Weekend. Stay tuned for more information as this will be an event you will want to be a part of. A huge Thank-you also goes out to Twin Bridge Farms as they have graciously donated a heifer calf to be raffled off at Wish List. This is one of our association’s largest fundraisers and could not be done with out fantastic people. Also, the National Gelbvieh show will be at Farmfair International in Edmonton, Alberta on November 7, 2019. This is an outstanding event and I highly recommend getting some cattle in early and on feed and participate. The marketing possibilities are endless and the comradery with fellow breeders is second to none. We unfortunately do not have a field day planned yet, but if someone is interested in hosting one if not this year, but in years to come please contact someone on the board and we will assist you in any way we possibly can. Have a safe summer and I look forward to meeting up with everyone this fall.

After a long and brutal winter, I am certain everyone has green grass on their mind. This is always an exciting time for beef producers as calf crops begins to take shape and we turn our attention to important breeding decisions for next year. As always, we are very excited to host Gelbvieh events at Manitoba Ag-Ex in Brandon October 22-26 and Canadian Western Agribition in Regina November 25-30. Now is a great time to begin thinking about your consignment to the Agribition sale! If we can offer any support or answer your questions, please contact Ross Davidson at 306 625 7045 or myself at 403 465 2805. We will once again be presenting our Commercial and Purebred Breeder’s of the Year awards. Nominations are now being accepted and can be emailed to mansaskgelbvieh@gmail.com We do need your support to make these events possible and will be asking for award sponsors. This is a great way to market

your program by having your name or sale printed on an award for years to come. Please contact Courtney Bentz at 306 746 8034 to arrange your sponsorship. You will find a few changes and updates at Agribition this year including the move of the Canadian Bull Futurity to Red Deer to be held with the Wishlist. We thank the committee for their work and encourage everyone to take part! Other exciting details will be announced soon! Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to schedule a Man/SK Field Day this summer. There is still time, however, to put your name forward to host this valuable marketing tool and breed development event. Please give me a call. Finally, if you are a 4-H member showing a Gelbvieh animal or know someone who is, please contact us. Send us an email with their information and we will forward a pair of splash pants to recognize their achievements!
I
truly believe that people spend their efforts on things that are important to them. That is why extremely busy people can be found coaching hockey or showing cattle or taking a week with family at the cottage. They do these things because it is important to them. The same is true with our choices when it comes to breeding cattle. There are a lot of pieces of data we can collect on an animal these days. Some are important, others maybe less so. One of the key questions to ask ourselves when we are determining what our performance testing program will look like at home is, “what resources are we willing to spend on what is important?” Often forgotten, but perhaps even more important is the future tense of this question. “What resources are we willing to spend to invest in what will be important?” Breeding cattle is, hopefully, a forward-looking endeavour. The mating decisions that have already been made this spring determine the genetics hitting the ground in the commercial industry 2 years out, and the meat in the meat case further out yet. In a breed like Gelbvieh with maternal strengths, the decisions made this spring will impact our customers’ cow herds over a decade into the future. A personal reflection that should be made by every breeder in every breed is therefore; “Does my decision today address what will matter to my customer over the next decade?” “What am I missing?” There are a couple of ideas around this that I would like to share. Take them as you will… First, in a maternal breed, positive maternal impacts have a huge impact on profitability. Cow depreciation and sustained fertility are much bigger profit drivers than performance for most of your customers who use Gelbvieh cross cows. This means we need to aggressively participate in complete herd reporting, including such mundane tasks as reporting all females that are bred, pregnancy test results and disposal code information. If your ranch is like ours, then cow inventory is a nagging pain in the butt, but it is extremely important, especially as we try to target profitable maternal genetics for the industry.
Second, I would propose that the industry is shifting towards more tracking of animals and individual rewards/certification programs. We also know that auction market volumes are declining over time and more calves are being sold direct or contracted. This means that there are potential rewards to the commercial industry level in the form of premiums at time of purchase or premiums based on final carcass performance. A good recent example could be the payments from the Verified Sustainable Beef program. In this context, some focus on carcass merit starts to enter the picture. We have already put a lot of focus on growth and performance, but currently we collect very few ultrasound records. As mentioned previously, people invest time and effort into things that they think are important. If you think carcass is going to become important then it is worth considering an investment. In actuality, the cost of this investment is extremely low, usually falling into the $20 per head range. The cost to scan an entire calf crop is likely significantly less than the cost of displaying a few head at a fall show. The third and final idea that I would float out there is that DNA technology may be something to consider in a program for its’ power to enhance genetic evaluation accuracy, but also to enable other tools such as multi-sire pastures, or AI with rapid natural mating follow up. DNA information on females is also likely more important than bulls if we are making decisions on where to invest limited resources. A performance program at the ranch level does take work but it is also an investment in our genetics and more importantly in the future success of our customers. It is worth taking some time to think through what really and truly matters to us and our customers as we move forward in an industry that is competitive and changing more rapidly than ever. It is more important than ever to do what’s important.

oof wall cracks are fairly common in cattle. These are usually divided into two categories—vertical (sandcracks) and horizontal. If the crack goes clear through the hoof horn, it causes pain and lameness.
“In dairy cattle a wet environment is detrimental because it contributes to excess wear on the softer feet, especially if they are on concrete. In beef cattle, one of the suggested causes of vertical wall cracks is drying,” says Shearer.
Dr. Jan Shearer, Professor and Extension Veterinarian, Iowa State University, says vertical wall cracks are more common in beef cattle than in dairy cattle, but horizontal cracks are common in all cattle.
Other factors in hoof hardness and health include mineral and vitamin deficiencies, which may lead to weaker hoof structure. “It’s been hard to narrow this down to specific vitamins and minerals but these are factors commonly considered to play a role in vertical wall cracks,” he says.
Some cattle seem to be more prone to cracks. “With vertical wall cracks there seems to be a breed predisposition because these occur almost exclusively in beef cattle and only rarely in dairy cattle. Some lines of cattle may be more prone to cracks than others,” he says. Environment also plays a role. If feet are continually wet they get softer, and more easily damaged, and in a dry climate they may become brittle and possibly more prone to cracking.
Page 14 • Summer 2019 • Gelbvieh guide
“Most of these cracks occur in the outer claw of the front feet. If you see what looks like a crack in another claw (such as in the hind feet) it could be a wall crack or it could be something else and we may need to look more closely to see if there’s another cause. Fortunately, vertical wall cracks rarely cause lameness. But when they do cause lameness they can create difficult and stubborn conditions to fix,” he says.
SCREW CLAW “These cattle have very abnormal growth to the toe, and a twisting of the claw in such a way that the animal starts to bear weight on the side of the foot instead of the sole. The lateral wall will fold underneath and become weight-bearing,” he says. “There seems to be a genetic tendency, so it may be unwise to use severely affected animals for breeding. Other factors that contribute to screw claw are previous bouts of laminitis, excess body weight, housing/environmental conditions, and advancing age. When observed in cattle at an early age, the potential for a genetic link for this condition may be greater,” he says. “Screw claw that does not become obvious until the animal is older suggests that it may be an acquired condition and thus associated with other factors. I often get questions about the heritability of screw claw. These are difficult questions to answer since no one wants to think that their prize bull or cow has a heritable form of this condition. A recent review of the literature found that estimates of the heritability of screw claw are actually quite low,” says Shearer. “The claws that are most commonly affected are the outer claws on the rear feet and sometimes the inner claw on the front feet. Cattle breeders need to be aware that this defect may be inherited,” he says.
“If a vertical crack goes all the way up to the coronet (essentially splitting the outer part of the claw in two) there could be some movement between those two pieces and the wall is unstable. It is difficult to stabilize those and there are a number of ways people try to do this. If I can put a thin block under the fractured claw to help hold it together, and then a thicker block under the other claw, the healthier one can carry the weight. The thin block on the cracked claw helps stabilize the two pieces at the sole,” says Shearer. “The other way it can be done is with a wire to wire the two pieces together. We can also use some kind of hoof cement/glue to stabilize the wall. These tactics require some time and effort to accomplish, and it may or may not work. These cracks are quite complicated and take a long time to heal, or may never heal, and may become a permanent condition. A vertical wall crack associated with white line disease often results in damage to the underlying corium to the extent that we can’t ever really get good hoof horn to form over that area again. These can become chronic conditions,” he says. “Horizontal wall cracks tend to occur in association with calving. They usually are not a problem unless they become very deep. In that situation the distal segment (farthest from the coronary band and closer to the toe) may get loose and cause pinching and pressure on the corium (the “quick”). In some cases we have to remove that portion or try to stabilize it until it grows out. Lameness is due to the instability of that wall segment, moving and pinching the corium underneath,” he says. The hoof wall grows at approximately ¼ inch per month. “You can estimate when calving occurred by looking at that ring/line around the hoof and measuring down from the coronary band. The location of these horizontal wall cracks can also help you estimate approximately when those will grow out,” explains Shearer.
TRIMMING FEET When dealing with wall cracks (vertical or horizontal) trimming can be helpful as preventative maintenance. Many producers trim bulls’ feet but cows may need trimming also, especially if they are always in soft green pasture which reduces hoof wear rate. By contrast, the feet self-trim when cattle are walking on rocks and dry ground. “The size of the hoof is a combination of growth and wear. If the wear is less than the growth, soon you have a very long foot. This can vary, depending on the type of terrain, and how moist or dry it is,” says Shearer. If the toes get too long this puts too much stress on the leg, especially the back tendons. “When the toe is long, the sole at the toe is thicker compared to sole thickness toward the heel. The long toe puts more stress and strain on the flexor tendons. Hooves that are extremely long and remain long for extended periods can create some serious problems.” This is why it’s a good idea to monitor hoof length and trim feet if necessary. “As a rule of thumb, claws that are significantly more than 3 Gelbvieh guide • Summer 2019 • Page 15
WHITE LINE DISEASE “Vertical wall cracks are sometimes confused with white line disease that has migrated up underneath the wall. This can go all the way to the coronet (skin/horn junction) where it exits as an abscess out through the surface above the coronet. This is a completely different condition; it normally starts at the sole of the foot and travels upward underneath the wall. This can not only cause severe lameness but in some cases become a deep digital sepsis type condition that is difficult to resolve (infection in the joint). If it gets into the joint it becomes something we can’t fix without surgical intervention, in most cases,” says Shearer. “White line disease can occur in any claw, but tends to occur most commonly in the outer claw in rear feet, and less commonly in front feet. If it does occur in front feet it can occur in either the inner or outer claw, whereas vertical wall cracks (up to 80% of them) mainly occur in the outer claw of the front foot.” This gives a clue when trying to determine what is going on. “If it is in rear foot, or not in the outer claw of the front foot, it needs a closer look, since it may be white line disease rather than a crack,” he says. “Another condition that can cause a draining tract at the coronet is an infection in the coffin joint within the hoof capsule itself. This can eventually drain out at the coronet but there is usually a lot of swelling and an extremely lame animal. Depending upon where this draining tract is located, it can be a sign that the coffin joint is involved,” says Shearer.
Page 16 • Summer 2019 • Gelbvieh guide
inches long (as measured on the dorsal ridge of the front wall) in adult cows or bulls would probably need trimming. This doesn’t mean that every cow with a hoof longer than 3 inches needs trimmed, but when a foot gets well beyond that length, evaluation by a foot care professional may be in order. Some feet will need trimming on a regular basis—especially any cattle that are affected with screw claw,” says Shearer.

he Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is an industry-initiated, not-for-profit organization incorporated to establish a national livestock identification database for the traceability of cattle, bison, sheep, goats and cervids. Its database is known as the Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS). The CLTS MOBO app is essentially the Canadian Livestock Tracking System database at your fingertips. We’ve taken the entirety of a national traceability system and made it available on your Android and iPhone devices. Our MOBO app launched in 2010 in its basic form, as a response to the growing demand to operate a business anywhere, anytime. MOBO is our solution, with the flexibility to be portable and on-the-go while meeting increasing demands for livestock traceability regulations. The app is now more user-friendly than ever with streamlined features and intuitive design. The new Offline Mode allows users to input-data and upload when it makes sense for them; when the job is finished or when they are back in a service area. CLTS MOBO allows users to submit birthdates, animal movement and retired events (to name a few), directly to the CLTS database. CLTS MOBO features Optical Character Recognition technology, which converts images of number lists into editable, searchable data for easy uploads to your CLTS account. With changing traceability regulations expected for 2019, there is no better time to sign-up for the app. Producers will have increased responsibilities including timely reporting of data, transportation information and premise identification obligations in order to be considered compliant. The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency is making it easier than ever to keep your records up-to-date and stay accountable. We work closely with producers who offer feedback on the app, resulting in updates and process changes. It is field tested by the people actually relying on it to ensure the best product possible. Our Client Support Representatives are trained on new enhancements and can educate users and answer any questions. We also have Field Specialists who are subject matter experts, offering webinars and in-field training, acting as our first point of contact. Visit them at a trade show near you. We understand you have many jobs to do, let’s make this one as easy as possible. The app is available as a free download on Android and Apple devices. Please visit our Resource Center for step-bystep instructions http://support.canadaid.ca/ or give us a call at 1-877-9092333. The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, we’re here to help.

rom sensors in soils, on animals and on drones, to various software and services, ‘smart’ technologies are changing the way ranching is done. These technologies allow producers to look beyond what the eye can see by collecting non-traditional data and employing analytics to raise beef that is both sustainable and profitable. The technologies available are only limited by your imagination. If you’re thinking about adding some ‘smart’ technologies on your beef operation this year, you’re not alone. Ranchers across Canada and the United States are becoming increasingly wise to the benefits of innovation and technology. Advances in nutrition, welfare, growth efficiency technologies, genetics, digital technologies and services have all played a role in livestock becoming more efficient.
WHAT IS ‘SMART FARMING?’ Farm management considers many variables including weather, soil conditions, animal health and more. ‘Smart Farming’ is a concept that employs modern technology to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural products by measuring and analyzing variables. With Smart Farming in the beef industry, producers can better monitor individual animals and adjust their management, nutrition and health regimen appropriately. This ultimately enhances herd productivity and farm profitability. This article will share an overview of select technologies that ranchers have been adopting to improve farm and ranch management. The technologies can be broken down in several different categories regarding type: software, hardware and services. For effective adoption, all three might be necessary. Buying monitoring hardware for your animals isn’t of much use if you can’t manage that data in some software (such as a smart phone app) and have it analyzed for the most effective on-farm application using a service provider.
1. DRONES Drones, or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) can be a costeffective tool to locate cattle, check waterers, fences, cow and calf health and more on your operation. The most significant and early savings will be on labour costs but researchers are experimenting with alternative uses of drones. Additional data can be collected from infrared cameras for tracking livestock, as well as linking data from other devices you might be using to tracking animal health, fertility, and more. If you think a drone might be useful to your operation, be sure to check the regulations with Transport Canada (available at: Page 28 • Summer 2019 • Gelbvieh guide
https://www.tc.gc.ca/en/services/aviation/drone-safety/flyingdrone-safely-legally-current-rules.html).
2. ‘WEARABLES’ The ‘wearables’ category primarily consists of biosensors and machine to machine technology to continuously and automatically monitor livestock health and productivity. This category might include ear tags, leg bands, or collars that monitor body temperature, sleeping, movement, GPS and location tracking and/or feed and water consumption. Wearables collect data and are run through a software application to inform producers of injuries, illness, or reproductive health (from fertility to birthing).
3. APPS (SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS), SERVICES, AND SOFTWARE Smartphone apps for tracking nutrition and fitness in humans is nothing new! Even in agricultural technologies, there are thousands of apps available such as those to detect meta-
bolic diseases (e.g., ‘BCS CowDition’) or using the smartphone camera for ‘weighing’ your cattle with up to 95% accuracy (e.g., ‘Beefie’). Many apps are available through service providers and make use of software for management decisions.
4. PASTURE TECHNOLOGIES (VIRTUAL FENCING, SENSORS, SOLAR) There are numerous pasture technologies available to producers. One that combines a ‘wearable’ is virtual fencing, where GPS boundaries are loaded on a collar or other wearable device, and the animal is trained to stay within the boundaries (e.g., ‘eShepherd’) to manage grazing. There are also many soil sensors available to compliment what you might see on the surface of your pasture. Soil moisture content, temperature and nutrient levels can now be easily monitored. While using solar technology to power watering systems and electric fencing is not a new concept, advances have further reduced the cost and increased the ease of installation for these purposes. The same technology can be used to power communication devices to relay information from, say the wearables, to a device that will capture the data and then relay it to the cloud or platform for analysis.
5. GENETICS It would be remiss if we didn’t mention the use of genetics and genomics as a ‘smart’ technology when it comes to livestock production. DNA-based genetic prediction suggests there is a reduced possibility for the genetic prediction (EPD’s) to change as we get more information back on the animal—it’s the application of both big data and advanced analytics. This enhances predictability that reduces costs for ranchers and
makes the information more valuable early in the animal’s life. With most purebred producers including some type of DNA test on influential sires to some commercial beef producers now using DNA tests to optimize hybrid vigour, genomics has come a long way from simple SNP-based parentage testing. A related technology to keep an eye on in the future will be CRISPR or gene editing in cattle. This is being studied extensively in the United States and Brazil and has already been able to remove the horned gene in Holstein cattle. Next goals are to produce only male offspring for more efficient beef production or engineering cattle that are more heat tolerant.
THE BIG PICTURE The above categories are simply a snapshot. AgTech seems to be only limited by your imagination. Whether you’re intent on improving efficiency, health, or welfare of your cattle, Smart Farming technologies can help you achieve your goals. Often, these technologies work in parallel. For instance, a big component of genomics is collecting accurate phenotypes. Many of the new ag-apps available to producers using their smartphone help collect these phenotypes (for instance, body weight and Average Daily Gain). Some technologies we’re also seeing in the beef industry that weren’t discussed in detail include blockchain, artificial intelligence (machine learning, reasoning, and self-correction), other ‘omics’ (for example, nutrigenomics and how nutrition impacts gene expression). Today’s ‘smart’ farms are using data and technology to become faster, more efficient, more agile and more sustainable, while still producing safe and nutritious beef. AgTech and Smart Farming enable beef producers to look at how they raise their animals in entirely new ways. On your farm, AgTech can help with herd improvement and economic gains by collecting information for better decisions on health protocols, nutrition, breeding practices, fertility, production efficiency and animal welfare. Beyond your farm gate, AgTech continues to offer benefits. For consumers, it verifies production information for marketing purposes, proves the traceability of their beef and provides reassurances of best practices in the beef industry. As for the global consumer, it assures Canada is leading the way by consistently improving environment sustainability, the health of animals and to meet growing global protein demand in the coming decades. here are a multitude of diseases to consider vaccinating for and these diseases come in a multitude of vaccine combinations with different types of administration routes (subcutaneous or intramuscular) as well as different dosage amounts (usually two-five cc). These possibilities should all be considered when choosing vaccines. First and foremost, use the advice of your local veterinarian. He/she will have chosen the most appropriate vaccines for your geographic area in the best combinations available to minimize the number of needles to be given. Veterinarians are an invaluable resource when it comes to vaccine selection a very critical point of biosecurity for your commercial or purebred operation. New and different vaccine combinations are available just about every year so be aware of that. Vaccine companies, generally speaking, are producing more and more vaccines in multiple combinations. This is because there are now several diseases, which are routinely, vaccinated for on most farms. By having less choice, it is less confusing to producers, less needles are necessary and the cost per disease treated actually comes down. Veterinarians make the choices as to which vaccine lines to carry based on several things, effectiveness, route of administration, dosage amount and dose size per container. Availability, price, timing of administration and service given by the sales force are all considered when making the selection. All reputable companies have data to support the effectiveness of their vaccine over others. We are really almost comparing apples to apples when comparing the numerous vaccines available from the reputable companies if they cover the same diseases. Make sure the vaccines you use cover the diseases you need to prevent and administer them properly. A few misconceptions are changing vaccine lines and the thought of needing to start the whole vaccine protocol over again. Different vaccine lines will generally booster the immune response from a previous vaccination from a different line of vaccines. Of course, the diseases in the vaccines must be the same. The important thing to remember whether it be from previous vaccination or exposure to the real disease revaccination stimulates the bodies immune system to develop further protection from sickness. Generally speaking, this is where the modified live vaccines (mixing the powder and the fluid together) will give longer lasting immunity then the killed viral vaccines. Certain geographic areas in Canada have a higher incidence of specific diseases and vaccination may be considered. An example of this would be Clostridium Hemolyticum in west central Alberta. Horses are vaccinated for rabies in certain regions of eastern Canada. Herds that have had prior history of leptospirosis may vaccinate and in outbreaks of Anthrax the contact herd as well as neighbouring herds may be vaccinated in the current year and forward in subsequent years. Other diseases, which are reportable in Canada such as, foot and mouth disease or brucellosis even though a vaccine exists for them they are not allowed to be used in Canada. That’s because we are free of these diseases and want to keep the disease out. If we were to vaccinate the protection the vaccine affords could mask symptoms and carrier animals might develop. Tests for disease exposure often cannot differentiate between exposure to the real disease or vaccination so eradication is therefore difficult.
Now in most beef herds across western Canada vaccination for the diseases of IBR, BVD (types 1 and 2), PI3, BRSV, clostridial (blackleg group 8 way or now 9 way), histophilus (the former hemophilus), are pretty much commonplace. For young calves up to and past weaning the two respiratory pathogens Pasteurella and Mannheimia are becoming commonplace as well. With some companies’ vaccines all these organisms are protected for in two needles. Some other products even come as intranasal vaccines which offer quick protection to the diseases and no needles. Intranasal technology is becoming more common even in very young calves and watch for more intranasal technology in the future. With these intranasal vaccines you get quicker immunity without a bothersome needle. Many purebred producers give intranasal vaccinations such as Once PMH, Inforce 3 or both vaccines before they head down the show road. This enhances pre-existing immunity at a time when they need maximal protection. Scours vaccination is becoming commonplace for the breeding animals in especially the larger herds and there are now three main scours vaccines to choose from Scour Bos, Scour guard & Guardian. One of the scours vaccines can even be given subcutaneously. A multitude of other vacccines, foot rot especially in the breeding bulls, pinkeye vaccines and leptospirosis vaccines are being more commonly used if necessary. Don’t forget to vaccinate the breeding bulls and many take advantage of semen evaluation to complete this task. Also, storage of vaccines (almost all need to be refrigerated) and handling when administered are critical to getting the maximum effect. Freezing or overheating of the vaccine before administration cannot be tolerated. Label your syringes so as not to mix different vaccines and make sure and give the vaccines a handbreadth apart preferably on opposite sides of the neck. Only mix up enough of the modified live vaccines to use in one hour. Take your time and administer the vaccines properly. They are insurance against the calves not getting sick, so take your time and insure the best immunity. Make sure your cattle are also treated for worms and lice to minimize these parasites. With parasites removed the calves will develop that much better protection from the vaccines. The fall is the ideal time to totally review your vaccination program, so you can add in further protection if it is available. If selling purebred cattle especially out of area, make sure the purchaser indicates if there is anything specific to vaccinate for. Vaccination programs vary slightly across the country and this is good information to know so you can vaccinate the cattle before they go. Eastern Canada often will vaccinate for leptospirosis, but it is very rare in the west. Preimmunization which is vaccinating before exposure to allow maximum protection to develop. This generally will take ten days to two weeks. There are no magic bullets of vaccination replacing good management. Proper nutrition, parasite control and sanitation go along way to preventing disease itself. All this augmented with a properly thought out and implemented vaccination program will severely reduce the incidence of those diseases on your farm. Talk to your veterinarian as new products and ways of administration are coming out all the time. Also, many producers look to their purebred supplier of bulls for advice on what vaccination program to use. Purebred breeders should think of indicating their vaccination programs in their sales catalogues for others to follow. Gelbvieh guide • Summer 2019 • Page 31
