Welcome...

On behalf of the Gelbvieh Association of Alberta and British Columbia, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Gelbvieh Wish List Weekend! A time when Gelbvieh enthusiasts come together to celebrate the growing success and popularity of our breed and also to enjoy the camaraderie of follow breeders. Our board has worked very hard to build on the success of last year’s event. We are excited to once again feature the Bull Futurity and the Commercial Heifer Pen Show. On the bull side, you’ll have the opportunity to preview sale offerings for next spring and to see the best of the best Canadian breeders have to offer. The pen show is quickly becoming the ‘go to spot’ to promote the crossbreeding power of our breed. It also provides an opportunity to highlight some of our commercial counterparts who have come to trust the Gelbvieh breed to make advancements in their breeding programs. The weekend will also see the annual meeting of our association take place Saturday morning as well as the pre-sale banquet Saturday evening. Perhaps more than ever, consignors to the Wish List Sale have brought very top end females for your appraisal. Calendar year heifer calves, bred heifers, donor prospects, and choice lots will be available to make your, or your significant other’s, wishes come true this holiday season. As a board, we are extremely excited about this offering. We consider this group of females to have more depth and potential than any other that has been assembled for this event. New for this year, we have added astute cattlemen to our marketing team who will be at the sale to assist you in making your selections. In the event you are unable to attend the sale and would like someone to evaluate the cattle on your behalf, please contact one of the Wish List Weekend Sale Contacts who will then match you with an individual to assess the cattle with you. You can then choose to bid online or over the phone. These contacts are listed on the inside front cover of the catalogue. The timing of this event is no accident as we all have much to celebrate to this time of year; Calves are weaned, our herds are ready for winter and the coming calving season, and the holidays are just around the corner. This is the ideal time to step away from the farm, get some shopping done in the stores and more importantly at the Westerner Grounds in Red Deer! We hope to see you there for an exciting weekend of Gelbvieh cattle! Season’s Greetings!.

Pick of the 2015 Heifer Pen

This is a great opportunity to select a top 2015 heifer calf from the Jen-Ty program like the one in the picture. We have never offered this opportunity before to have someone come in and pick from all the heifers calves in our heifer pen. We have built our program from some very strong genetics over the years going back to the great Calberta Resource to today with the great Chilli bull. We strive to keep females that are very broody, thick made, good uddered, functional cows with great dispositions. We have a very strong group of females to chose from and anyone one of them would make a great cow for anyone’s herd. The 2015 heifer calves are sired by Chilli 451Y, Jen-Ty Red Hot Chilli 25A, JDPD Movado 407T, Jen-Ty Fearless 41Y, JDPD Astro 407S and MMM Calberta Resource 8307H. Know that this chance won’t come along often to go into a breeders pen and pick your own heifer.

Selling Choice of Sisters

SA Birch’s Tammy 155Z

Fir River Crosby 806A

ATC Gold Star Polled 5D

Here is a great opportunity to have the pick of daughters from one of the top females in our program. 155Z is a model Gelbvieh cow; massive in her muscle design, easy fleshing, big volumed with a perfect udder. Fir River Exposure has consistently left us with great females and 155Z is a prime example of that. These sisters are double stacked with maternal power on their sire’s side of the pedigree. 42B is from none other than the great 5D, whose daughters have become legendary in the Gelbvieh breed. Anyone who has had the privilege of owning a 5D daughter knows what great brood cows they make. This is a first as we have never sold a 5D daughter and will likely never offer another. Her baby sister, 78C, is also a first. She is the first progeny of our new herd sire, Crosby, who we expect to have a big impact on our program. His structural correctness, growth curve and fleshing ability is backed up by a great pedigree. The choice is yours! No matter if you choose the stout bred heifer or the flashy heifer calf, a front pasture female awaits!

Performance Bred Females This JRI StarBucks female is exactly what he is known to produce! She is extremely attractive, great haired, and will make a tremendous cow. Her mother is shaping up to be a front pasture cow, as her bull calf this year will be noticed next Spring. The maternal excellence built into this heifer stems from the Rebello clan, and we are all aware of the success SLC has had over the years with them. Consistency and quality are two very important factors to our bottom line, and this heifer is right as rain. Her mating to SLC 82W will only add to the cow power and the coupon she is carrying will more than pay for this investment.

Performance Bred Females 6B has thickness and volume not commonly found combined with this much eye appeal. She is angular fronted, great haired, and has about the prettiest head we’ve found on a Gelbvieh female. The Red cow family has been a mainstay in our herd for a long time, and 6B’s dam is a beautifully uddered young female who has another top cut heifer calf on her this year. Her sire, the high selling Big N Rich, has done a great job with the progeny we have had from him. His sons were well received in our bull sale and his daughters look like they will be terrific brood cows. Her mating to Touchdown only adds to her value. Expect an early maturing, stout made, heavy muscled baby at side next spring. We’d appreciate if the new owner could let us know if they choose to show this pair next year because they’ll be hard to beat.

Fancy Heifer Calves A very hard calf to part with, moderate, stylish and a very correct daughter out of JM Zaphire 75Z and JOE Third Edition 423Z. This will be the first ever daughter from either of these two parents to ever leave the farm. Zaphire was the Reserve Grand Champion Female at Farmfair 2012 as a calf, and then again in 2013 as a bred heifer. A couple Third Edition daughters were shown last year with one winning the Red Deer Westerner days heifer calf Jackpot, and then winning the Legends of the Fall Gelbvieh jackpot at Farmfair. Another daughter was JOE Third Edition also shown in Edmonton where she was named the Reserve heifer calf champion behind another 5D daughter that went on to be the Reserve Grand champion female. We feel that this heifer calf will excel in not only the show ring but will be a functional producing female for years to come. JM Zaphire 75Z

NGC Cranberry is out of the heart of BNH Livestock. Her dam Strawberry 55T was purchased from the 2009 Wish List sale and her reputation and quality is quite apparent when you look at BNH Livestock as a whole and see how many direct and indirect daughters or grand daughters are producing in our program, with flawless udders and teat structure. Out of the 7 calves that have been naturally born from Strawberry, 4 are females that are being retained in the herd and 2 of the bull calves have gone on to be herdsires in purebred or commercial herds. Of all of these calves they have an average birthweight of 80lbs and all born unassisted. Cranberry is no acception to the "Berry" rule, dark red, multi polled, fancy, structurally flawless and clean fronted. To add to the maternal characteriatics of this prospect foundation female, take a Valley Ms Strawberry 55T look at the bottom side of her pedigree, the Judd Ranch signature stamp is an added bonus. This young female is born April 23rd so she would fit in a winter or spring calving program quite easily and would shine in both a show ring/purebred or commercial herd. There is endless possibilities with this female and this is what we strive to produce at BNH Livestock. Maternal Sister

FLAD Whiskey Girl 116W that was 2010 Sweetheart Classic in Regina, has produced another great heifer for me this year & I think one of the best yet. As ‘Cubby’ came home from plain pasture with no special treatment, I was really impressed on depth, size, balance, maturity and femininity. This year we will not give her too much special treatment either, she will be in the pen with other heifers until sale time. I wouldn’t be worried about the high BW as her dam was shown (spoiled) last year and weighed over 1800 lbs in November that’s 5.39% of Calf/ Dam ratio.
