on three Oracle upgrade projects, making progress with each passing year. Jade Global expanded its offerings, including enterprise business application implementations, software engineering, cloud services, and so on. Once the company kickstarted its sales, there was no looking back. It embarked on another major physical expansion by establishing a second US headquarter on the East Coast in Philadelphia through acquisition. In 2019, the company established offices in Vienna, Austria, and Toronto. One of the company’s most significant milestones is the establishment of Jade Global’s R&D Unit: Jade Labs, a locus of innovation that adds a unique flavour to its partner offerings.

Jade Global is the brainchild of Karan Yaramada. He founded the company in 2003, after having worked for nearly 11 years in the IT industry. When he realized how IT services were gaining more global recognition, he quit his secured IT position and became the first employee and CEO of Jade Global. Despite having worked with big names in the industry like Tata Consultancy Services, General Electric, and KPMG, he worked independently with no paycheques for the first three months. This was, without a doubt, one of the biggest risks he had taken during his career. “There was an opportunity in the market to start an IT services company that had the culture, competitive pricing, and benefits of a boutique firm, but at the same time could provide customers with large-scale IT projects,” says Karan. how we started Jade Global from the ground up, going from 1-10 was much easier than going from 10-20 in terms of stages in the company. It was tough to hire, trust, coach, and train the right people, but it has been even more challenging to scale the business. “

Karan attributes his company’s success to his dedicated and hard-working employees. Even during the pandemic, the Jade Global employees were extremely cooperative and gave 100% towards the company’s progress. “We had almost unknowingly been preparing for this period over the past few years. We went on to become a 100% remote workforce almost overnight without any glitches. This was possible because all our employees had company-issued laptops and secured VPN Access; everything was on the cloud, including our office collaboration suite, time and billing system, and network security,” states Karan. To ensure utmost safety and protection, Karan and his leadership team formulated the ‘3Ps Ethos at Work’ in the first virtual meeting during the pandemic. The 3Ps Approach is:

Per the 3 Ps approach, Jade Global declared a work from home policy in their US and India offices two weeks before the Government of India announced its first lockdown. Even now, the employees continue to preserve and demonstrate the same work ethic they did during the pre-pandemic days. “We urged all managers to reach out to every team member so that we had an open line of communication between all employees. We were able to gain insight into the challenges of all employees and take the appropriate steps to solve these issues,” he adds.

Donating basic amenities to Children Living in Poverty in Inner City Philadelphia Jade Global’s East Coast employees volunteer at ‘Cradles to Crayons’, a non-profit organization established to make life better for children in need. ‘Cradles to Crayons’ provides children living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive- at home, school and play. The company’s employees spend their volunteer days in the Philadelphia warehouse sorting through toy donations, clothing, and other goods that go to local children living in poverty.

Through such initiatives, Jade Global aspires to help underprivileged communities and encourage employee enrichment through professional development programs.

A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs

We asked Karan about some invaluable insights he would like to share with young entrepreneurs. Here’s what he has to say, “Change is Innovation. Adaptation is Survival. So, Change and Adapt. You must make sure you are innovative in changing year after year to scale out the business, but at the same time, you can disrupt the flow when you make too many changes too quickly. You must be adaptable to and embrace change.”

Providing essentials to Children and Families Impacted by HIV/AIDS in India “No one should go hungry”,, a slogan Jade Global swears by. The company’s India offices support the DESIRE Society, a nonprofit NGO organization focused on the health development and well-being of children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in India. The company’s employees in India collect and donate essential food items to Institutional Care Homes. These shelters are specially built for the children who’re abandoned and orphaned because of HIV/AIDS. Offering Packaged Fresh Food and Handing Out Clothes to Underprivileged Individuals and Families in San Jose, California. To prepare for the holiday season, Jade Global employees at the company’s San Jose Headquarters volunteered at Sacred Heart Community Service to sort vegetables and hand out clothes to those in need in the local community. The company’s team also had a canned food drive all through November in the office to further help with Sacred Heart’s mission of curbing poverty. ‘Sacred Heart’ is a non-profit organization that strives to ensure that every child and adult is free from poverty. They provide needy individuals and families daily access to a food pantry, clothes closet and educational assistance. Chiguru 2019: An Annual Event to Showcase Hidden Talents ‘Chiguru’ is the Annual Event of Youth for Seva held across 5 locations in India. Chiguru, which translates to “budding”, is a flagship initiative by Youth for Seva. It provides a unique platform for students from Government schools to showcase their inbuilt talents in academics, sports and arts. It serves as a platform for underprivileged children to showcase their cultural and creative talents across categories, including street play, Rangoli, yoga, dance, drawing, etc. Here are the main highlights of the event:

About the company

Durgesh Impex Pvt. Ltd. (DIPL) is into manufacturing high-quality cotton, cottonseedand cotton crude oil. It has its presence in all three major cotton-growing states of the country namely Gujarat, Jalgaon (Maharashtra) and Bhatinda (Punjab). DIPL’S branch offices are located at Jodhpur, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Maharashtra, and Punjab. What started as a trading Company in 1938 has evolved into one of India’s most automated and state of art ginning companies. Today, Durgesh Impex Pvt. Ltd. holds the largest state- of-the-art cotton ginning factory in Jalgaon, Maharashtra and Rajkot, Gujarat along with a few leased units in both these States.

Initial challenges that cropped up in the business

The Indian textile industry is highly fragmented and is being dominated by unorganized sectors with small and medium industries. The quantity and quality of cotton production have always been affected by the impact of climate change. Factors like a weak or late monsoon with extreme heat or drought reduce cotton supplies and affect cotton prices. If a crop sees a good harvest season during a particular year, it may see a sharp fall in its prices. This results in farmers withdrawing from sowing the crop in the next year which affects the supply. However, the MSP (minimum support price) fixed by the government causes higher investments and production of crops. DIPL is one of the biggest manufacturers of cotton, and the textile industry being an intensively capital-driven industry with no credit system with farmers. The company’s biggest challenge was the Channelization of Capital Flow. Where the company had to match their cash flows in order to maintain the supply chain and the ecosystem but gradually with proper budgeting they tapped the entire phenomenon.

DIPL’s Entrepreneur Journey

DIPL is a Third Generation Business, Founded in 1938, by Shri Hanuman Prasad Agarwal, based out of West Bengal. Shri Hanuman Prasad Agarawal commenced with the trading of Cotton and agricommodities. By the late 70s, Mr. Anil Agarwal, father of Mr. Durgesh Agarwal moved the business headquarters to Ahmedabad, Gujarat which was known to be the Manchester of India. With minimum support, he took that calculative risk of changing his business location from Kolkata to a new city altogether and faced the challenges and upsides of relocating while his trade in Raw Cotton continued. By 1990, wanting to go beyond trading they set up their First largest fully-automated ginning company in the country at Dholka District of Ahmedabad , which was then spread across 5 sprawling acres of land. They took their second ginning plant on Lease near Himmatnagar north Gujarat in 1997 and today Durgesh Impex holds the largest stateof-the-art cotton ginning factory in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Ginning being the first step of Cotton production made them believe that textile over the coming years will be one such business that will never disperse. This led them to invest innovation and creativity in DIPL which enhanced the business growth. As a multi-disciplinary Entrepreneur today, Mr. Durgesh Agarwal has transitioned from a marketing leader to an entrepreneur while working within cross-functional teams and developing his Industrial Presence under Textile, Real Estate, Education, and Philanthropy. Short term trust can be built by smart marketing campaigns but long-term trust can only be built by actions. We don’t believe in short term relationships. For us, we want to be with our clients till they have attained success which they aspire for. That is what is behind its uniqueness.

Have you measured how much trust consumers have in your brand? Haven’t lost any customer due to poor mentorship or guidance so far. That is my biggest measure of trust.

What are the offerings (services/solutions)? Our relationships start with us trying to understand our customer’s business, its founders’ vision, financial situation and other current status of the company. Post that we work with our clients to work out their strategy, business plans, and action plans. Once that is done, usually we start by supporting them in increasing their sales. We are very hands on people so I not only tell them what to do but also sit with them in customer calls, go with them for the customer meetings etc.). The idea is not to just tell but do things with them so that they can also learn by watching. Generally, post the improvement in Sales starts the work on Delivery, HR etc. Because as the business starts to grow, it has to delivered and it has to be delivered by people…. of course, during the entire time, Finances remain under the magnifying glass at all times. These are the offerings that we have, essentially, the entire business cycle.

What’s the first thing that enters a consumer’s mind when they see your brand? A company which is a friend, philosopher, guide…and mentor. Mr. Ajay Piramal is a well-known Indian business person and the chairman of Piramal Enterprises Limited. After facing countless troubles in life, he proved himself as a phoenix. His story is of a remarkable business transformation, from a textile magnet to becoming India’s 4th largest pharmaceutical manufactures.

Currently, he is the chairman of Rs 400 billion groups, comprising Nicholas Piramal, the fourth-largest pharmaceutical company in India, Morarajee Weaving and Spinning, and Gujarat Glass. Under his leadership, Piramal Group has grown on to become a diversified multinational corporation, which has a presence across 100 countries across different sectors such as pharmaceuticals, packaging, financial services, and real estate. Ajay is on the Board of Directors of several companies also, which include – Piramal Enterprises Ltd, Piramal Life Sciences Limited, Piramal Glass Ltd., Allergan India Limited, Indiareit Fund Advisors Pvt. The initial phase of life

Ajay had a well-settled family background. Despite this, he had to go through several difficulties, to become what we see today. In the year 1977, when Ajay was 22 years of age, he had completed his MBA

Things worsened when his elder brother too, decided to part ways from the family business in 1980. Only 16 days after the separation, all the textile mills in the city were forced to closed down due to a strike led by 48

His brother left behind his young widow and their three children. After all these happenings, he decided to take control of the business and made sure to turn around everything for good. The deal was considered to be the most expensive in the industry. Ajay decided to sell this business division that was making revenues worth more than ₹1,800 crores was sole because of the valuations he got.

Venturing into the Pharma Business

Soon after he took control of the business, he realized that he needed to move out of the textile business. Indeed, the textile industry had a good future, but because of the ways, the policies were fashioned, and because it was also an industry where commodity and cost were the major players, large companies just could not be successful. Since he did not have the pertinent knowledge of all the fields, he knew that the only way to grow was to acquire or merge companies in suitable sectors. He started with the acquisition of Gujarat Glass Limited. It is used to manufacture glass packaging for pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Later, he also understood that the next boom that will happen in India would be in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, he went for the acquisition of Nicholas Laboratories. After acquiring Nicholas Laboratories, under this banner itself, the company went on a spree of acquisitions such as the Indian subsidiaries of Roche, Boehringer Mannheim, Rhone Poulenc, ICI, and Hoechst Research Centre. This eventually grew the company to become listed amongst the top five pharmaceutical companies in India. Nicholas had reached the highest valuation in the whole pharmaceutical industry by the year 2010.
