Welcome to summer! As you will read in the pages that follow, Princess Anne stands poised to deliver great experiences for you and your families this season. Our golf and tennis programs are heating up with tournaments and leagues for you to enjoy, the pool will soon open, our fitness center has exciting classes and programs ranging from yoga to the Titleist Performance Institute and our summer kids’ camps will get underway in late May. Wine nights, live music on the Boulevard and family dining nights await us. Take a moment and review the eventpacked calendars on pages 51-54 and you will surely find many reasons to come up to the Club all summer long. The newly renovated Chesapeake will open for business in early June! You should come by early and often for cocktails and appetizers on the terrace around our new fire pit, grab a bite after golf or tennis at the new 28’ bar or bring your family for dinner at the massive communal table. We are excited about this new venue and hope that you will make it a popular gathering place at our Club.
We continue to plan the next phase of our Master Plan and hope to come to you in early summer to present our recommendations for enhancing the Princess Anne for our current and future membership.
Hope to see you soon at the PACC, Jonathan L. Thornton
While this Princess Anne Living publication remains a core communication tool and brings to life the vibrant Princess Anne family and events, our multiple other communication outlets continue to thrive. Nearly 1,500 Members follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/princessannecc, 1,125 on Instagram www.instagram. com/princessannecc, our website www.princessannecc.com consolidates all of our communications and if you are not receiving our weekly e-mails or utilizing the Princess Anne mobile app, I urge you to contact Kristen Bunting (757) 440-3111 / kbunting@princessannecc.com so that we can ensure you are fully connected and up-to-date with the freshest information.
Youth programming reaches its peak this time of year and our Youth Involvement Committee along with Youth Programs Manager Taylor Nelson and team continue to tweak summer programing for our Princess Anne youth. Youngsters are taught sportsmanship, conditioning, etiquette, technique, scoring rules, teamwork, traditions of the games and so much more by our passionate, gifted professionals. While the emphasis is fun, in many instances written and physical skill testing, competition and achievement recognition are in place for youngsters to successfully progress. This magazine is packed with additions and enhancements to our flourishing programs and we encourage you to take a moment to review the opportunities.
Our Operations Team is always exploring avenues to better serve the Princess Anne family and we garner so much through your valuable feedback and suggestions. As you have thoughts about any aspect of your Club, please do not hesitate to contact me via phone on my direct line (757) 440-3100 or e-mail wshonk@princessannecc.com
I very much look forward to seeing you at the Princess Anne this summer!

Richard PalluchMany of you have noticed signboards at the entrance of the Club sending people to a “Men’s Wine Meeting,” “The First Landing Irregulars” or even “Proctor Wine Meeting.” We know that you have wondered what these events were and rejoiced that they seemed quiet and dignified. Here is an explanation to some of your questions and concerns.
About eight years ago the Princess Anne Garden Club (a majority of which are PACC members) began to raise money to fund projects at First Landing State Park. One of their activities, which has become an annual North End event each late October, is a barbecue called Party in the Park. The Party requires barmen to serve wine and this task became the duty of some husbands of the Princess Anne Garden Club members. These men organized themselves into a group, like the most casual and unmilitary, but very loyal militia of the old days, irregulars. So the name was born….the First Landing Irregulars!
Last year the Irregulars were searching for another activity which would be fun and would raise money for use in the Park. Quickly the group decided that a black tie evening, a Mad Hatters Ball, would do very well. The group (Russell Proctor–convenor of the Irregulars, Joe Goodman, Bud Jewett, Jim Field and Vince Olivieri) also made the decision that the funds raised would be used for the Park in memory of Bruddy Baillio, one of the first members of the Irregulars.
The Mad Hatters Ball took place in the attic banquet room at Watermans, a terrific venue for a party of 80 people. The Mike Standing family who own Watermans very generously supported the evening. Artwork for posters and printing was donated by Barbie Sherrill and Jerry Williams. Tickets were sold out in no time and participation with hats uniquely designed and made by the men was terrific! Nancy Baillio and the famous Baillio daughters, Catherine Werner and Anne Standing, handled the hat judging and Joe Goodman (the man with the wine stain on his starched shirt) won first place.
It was a great evening and the money raised in Bruddy’s memory will be used to build a new bridge across one of the streams in the park. We’re already looking forward to next year, so if you see our sign in the PACC lobby, you know planning is probably in the works. Come say hello, if you dare!
Look for information this May on the Chesapeake grand re-opening event!

We are looking forward to our Members enjoying Princess Anne during our summer season! In preparation for this busy time, we offer the following reminders and strongly encourage our parents to emphasize them while supervising children on property.
• While signs are posted and much of the property is camera monitored, accessibility from multiple public streets makes us susceptible to non-member activity, particularly over the summer season. Members are urged to avoid leaving valuables in vehicles (particularly visible) and may not bring firearms on to Club property. Operations team protocol calls for us to notify the main Clubhouse front desk immediately whenever we suspect a non-member is on property, and we request Club Members do the same.
• Gentlemen are asked to remove their hats upon entering the Clubhouse. While ladies and gentlemen may change in/out of their swim wear in the locker rooms, bathing suits are not permitted in the Clubhouse.
• Juniors (under age 18) are not permitted in the ladies and men’s locker rooms and lounges unless accompanied by an adult. Ladies and gentlemen are encouraged to lock their lockers.
• Swimmers below age nine (including swim team members) must be under the supervision of a Member, a Member’s child or a caretaker who is age 12 or older. Divers below age nine must be accompanied and supervised by an adult (age 18 or over) present in the diving area.
• Our aquatics and Breakers teams are focused on elevating our maintenance while vigilantly monitoring the busy locker rooms throughout the summer. We thank parents in advance for your monitoring support. Please do not hesitate to alert Aquatics Director Brian Triolet or Breakers Manager Monica Au immediately with any concerns.
• Children under the age of 14 may use the fitness center if they are accompanied by, and under the supervision of, a personal trainer approved by the Fitness Committee or parent. Children 14-16 years of age who have completed a one-hour orientation with the Fitness & Wellness Director may use the fitness facility without parental supervision, during staff-supervised hours.
• All Members are required to sign in at the fitness center desk prior to utilizing the center and the sport court. Please adhere to the rules posted outside the court and requests by our team.
• Parking in the Club lots is for Members and their guests only. If you witness non-members utilizing the parking facilities, please inform our front desk team.
• Skateboarding is not permitted on Club property.
• Cyclists are encouraged to exercise great caution as they enter the Club property. Specifically, we ask that bikes are walked on the sidewalk along the lower, south side Club entrance, Breaker’s Boulevard and Breaker’s dining area. Bikes should be parked and locked on the bike racks on the east side of the pool, or by the sport court.

Dear Rules Guru: Everyone is talking about the new 2019 Rules of Golf on TV and on the course. There are so many rumors floating around. Would you please address a few?
Rumor: I heard that you can now take relief from an embedded ball anywhere in the “General Area” except for the sand; and that “General Area” is a new term for “Through the Green".
1. What parts of the course are included in the “General Area"? Does this include sandy areas that are not bunkers?
There are five areas of the golf course:
1. The teeing area of the hole being played;
2. All penalty areas;
3. All bunkers;
4. The putting green of the hole being played;
5. “The General Area” (formerly called “through the green”) which includes everything else on the course, except numbers 1-4 as listed above.
Sandy areas that are not bunkers are included in “the general area” but relief is not available for a ball that is embedded in a sandy area.
2. What is the procedure for taking relief from an embedded ball? What if it is on the putting green?
If a ball is embedded in its own pitch-mark anywhere in the general area, relief is allowed with a couple of exceptions, which rarely occur. No relief is allowed if a ball is embedded in any other part of the course, including the putting green. On the putting green, the player may mark and lift the ball, repair the damage caused by the ball’s impact and replace the ball.
The relief procedure for an embedded ball is as follows: the original ball or another ball must be dropped in this relief area: the spot right behind where the ball is embedded is the reference point and the size of the area is one club length; the relief area must be in the general area and cannot be closer to the hole.
3. If the ball is in the rough and the one club length relief takes you to the fairway, is that allowed?
Yes. The rough is included in the general area. The same applies when taking relief from sprinkler heads, drains, GUR, etc.
4. What is different now from the previous rule?
The main difference is the relief area. Previously, the player had to drop the ball “as close as possible” to the spot where the ball was embedded; there was no “relief area”. Additionally, the player may now substitute another ball when taking relief, whereas previously, the original ball had to be dropped.
Rumor: I heard that now, if your ball goes out of bounds or is lost, that you do not have to go back to the tee to replay it. My friend said that I now can drop a ball in the fairway for a penalty of two strokes and play my next shot from there. Sounds like a winner! Will we be able to do this at the PACC?
What you are referring to is a new Local Rule. The Club must choose to adopt this in order for the players to use it. You will probably never see this used at higher levels of competition.
Here is how this works: Only if the player has not played a provisional ball and finds that the ball is either out of bounds or cannot find the ball, the player may choose to use the Local Rule rather than playing under stroke and distance. The option allows the player to drop in a large area between the point where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds and two club lengths from the edge of the fairway of the hole being played that is not closer to the hole. The player gets two penalty strokes when using this option. See the diagram. PACC has adopted this Local Rule.
Rumor: I have heard that we refer to all hazards as penalty areas now. Is it true the penalty areas do not have to be associated with water? Will there still be a need to have both yellow and red stakes on the course? What options do areas defined as red penalty areas have that yellow areas do not have?
In the past, hazards included bunkers and water hazards. The term “hazard” has been eliminated from the new Rules. We now have "bunkers” and “penalty areas." Penalty areas no longer have to be associated with water. Penalty areas will still be marked as we have always marked water hazards in the past. The relief options are very nearly the same with a couple of exceptions. First, there are three options for a ball in a yellow penalty area: 1. stroke and distance; 2. back-on-the line relief; 3. play the ball as it lies. Red penalty areas have these three options plus the additional option of dropping in a two club length relief area using the spot where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area as the reference point. Two changes of note for penalty area relief; 1. when dropping back-on-the line, the player now must pick a reference point anywhere on the line and drop within one club length, no closer to the hole – previously the ball was to be dropped as close as possible to the line itself; 2. the opposite margin option for a ball in a red penalty area has been eliminated, unless a local rule permits this.
Rumor: My friend says there is a new procedure for taking back-on-the-line relief dropping on a specific “relief area.”
He says to:
1. Estimate a spot where the ball last crossed the penalty area.
2. Imagine an imaginary line that extends from the hole through the estimated spot and behind the penalty area.
3. Go back as far on that imaginary line as you wish.
4. Choose a spot on that imaginary line. From that spot, measure a club length on either side of the line and behind the spot. That defines the relief area in which to drop.
5. My friend reminds me when I drop that I must drop from knee height and I must use the longest club in my bag that is not a putter to measure. Is he correct in the steps to take?
Your friend is completely correct. Is back-on-the-line relief for both yellow and red penalty area?
Yes.
“Everyone is talking about the New 2019 Rules of Golf!”
Here are a couple updates from the winter and other projects around the course.
1. New tee surface and surrounding rough at #6 tee: We removed the cool season Bent grass off the teeing surface and replaced it with a warm season Zoysia grass which we’ve used in other areas of the course.
2. We also added the Zoysia turf to the right side of #15 next to the cart path. This turf is also more shade tolerant and we hope to see a better response to this north facing slope.
3. We filled in and re-grassed the back left bunker on #7 green. This swale will still catch some wayward shots, but will allow an easy approach to the hole location.
4. We took warm season putting surface technology and experimented with it around the course. The theory behind this, is the opportunity to expedite new growth in weak, high-traffic areas around the course, to hopefully limit spring sod applications.
5. We also added drainage in front of #12 green. This project will help dry out an area with increased surface run off.
Here are some other projects we’ve been working on since last fall:
• Tree trimming: #2, #7, #8, #11, #12, #13, #14 and #18
• Increased roping has paid off by keeping traffic off key areas of the golf course
• Upgraded poles at the driving range
• New sand in the fairway bunkers at #3
• Due to the #6 tee resurfacing, we used some of the fescue sod around other areas of the golf course to include #5 bunkers, #12 bunkers, #6 and other fescue areas around the course.
• If you’ve been asked by someone in the Golf Pro Shop to carry a USGA GPS tracker in your pocket during your round, it’s an opportunity to track your round and where you travelled on the golf course. We’re not spying on you, we just want to understand player consistency and what areas of the course get more traffic that others. This will help the Golf Course Maintenance Team understand how to manage the course, and allow the Golf Pro Shop to be better educated to help speed up play.
Congratulations to Toles Summers, our 2019 Green Jacket Par 3 Champion! Toles defeated all the flight winners to claim his first Par 3 Championship. Congratulations to the flight winners Mike Hays, Mike Morgan and Jimmy Nash, who were defeated by Toles in the pitch-off over the water.

The PACC Golf Committee recently put together a functioning Handicap Committee to assist the golf operations team with ensuring all golf events at the Club are fair and equitable. The goal of this committee is to review handicaps, set parameters for our events and ensure that all participants have a level playing field. We have been reticent in emphasizing handicap importance over the past years and we have come under some criticism lately as a result. For that reason, we have re-established a Handicap Committee to oversee managing this task. Below is information regarding the guidelines for our members as it relates to handicaps at Princess Anne, as well as information on our current committee.
The PACC Handicap Committee was re-established to ensure the integrity of each Handicap Index® it issues. Adherence to the guidelines listed below will help achieve the goal of fair and accurate handicapping at our Club. Our ultimate goal of the committee is to reinforce protecting the entire field as well as protect the reputation of Princess Anne, resulting in increased participation in all of our Club events. As a reminder, if you are a golfer and do not want to participate in the handicap program at our club, you are not required to do so. You always have the option to discontinue or request to not have a handicap card. This would, however, make you ineligible for many activities in our golf programs.
Beginning May 1, 2019, the Handicap Committee requests a copy of all scorecards, signed by the scorer and attested by one player in the group. All cards should be turned into the golf shop at the completion of each round. Each player will still be responsible for posting his or her score. The committee will use the information to review scores but also provide statistical data to reexamine the handicap holes that are currently in place. The scorecards should be
placed in the ‘scorecard box’ located beside the posting station in the golf shop.
Scores are to be posted as soon as possible after the round. Scores may be posted on the score entry kiosk in the golf shop, online at VSGA.org or through the MyVSGA mobile app. Additionally, away scores may be posted at the club where the round was played.
Handicaps are updated in Virginia on the 1st and 15th of each month. A Handicap Index® is based on the lowest 10 differentials out of a member’s most recent 20 scores at the time of the revision. A minimum of five scores is required for a member to be eligible for a Handicap Index®.
Each member has the responsibility of posting their scores as soon as possible following their round. The Handicap Committee will give each member up to three days from the date the round was played to post their score. If after this time the score has not been posted, the Handicap Committee will take the following action:
• First offense – Member will be sent a warning letter from Handicap Committee and score must be posted
• Second offense – Penalty score will be posted by the Handicap Committee
• Third offense – Handicap Index® will be modified by the Handicap Committee for a period of 30 days (member will be given opportunity to appeal decision). Members who are guilty of a third offense will be suspended from playing in club events for a 30-day period.
• Fourth offense – Handicap Index® will be withdrawn by the Handicap Committee for a period of 30 days (member will be given opportunity to appeal decision)
I trust that you are all in full summer mode enjoying all it has to offer! We hope you will find time to come out and enjoy your tennis facility, whether it’s simply a chance to get some exercise with friends, jump into one of our many programs or taking a lesson. Make sure to check out our tennis calendar to see all the fun events and tournaments coming up!
Many tactics in tennis are designed primarily to make opponents uncomfortable and lobbing the return is no exception. This creates instant chaos on the other side of the net. In many cases, it forces a change of position for your opponents and gives your net player a chance to pick off a weak reply. If you have opponents who bear down tight on the net or whose serves are drawing weak returns for putaways, throw up the lob return to mix things up. As a general rule with the lob, try to keep it over the non-dominant shoulder of the net player (right handers: left shoulder, left handers: right shoulder). Then, if you don’t execute it perfectly you won’t be sending your partner to the hospital from the overhead reply.
For many doubles players there is a clear distinction of which return is stronger and which return is weaker. If you find that your opponent simply can’t hit their backhand return, then pepper that return. If your opponents are pretty solid on both sides, serve up the “T” to reduce the angle of return and set up the next target. Make sure you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to serving location. Anytime you hit the ball down the middle of the court, chances are it will come back down the middle, so if your partner knows where you are locating the serve they can anticipate the return and often put the volley away on the next ball. Also, using the body jam serve will keep the returner uncomfortable. Serving up the “T” in doubles is the primary tactic on first serve, so practice it a lot.
Our CHKD Winter Open Mixed Doubles Tournament continues to gain in popularity with not only our members but also the tennis community as a whole in Hampton Roads. This year was another sellout with 64 teams competing, 41 of which were teams with at least one member. There were 20 people on the waiting list, many of whom still came to watch matches throughout the weekend as well as attended the Saturday night party. Capping the field at 16 teams per division enabled us to schedule out the entire weekend so people knew when they played each match ahead of time. We had first round matches on Thursday and Friday night with a packed house in the mezzanine. On Saturday, we ran matches starting at 8:30 am and were pleased to see a continuous stream of spectators coming and going making for an awesome atmosphere. The finals were played at 1:00 pm Sunday where we witnessed Justin McDaniel and his partner Dajana Cvjetkovic, a former Norfolk State player, win the Open Division. They were an unseeded team who took out the number one seed in the semi-finals and ended up defeating Molly Hobbs and Ryan Davidson, another unseeded team, in the finals. It was the year of upsets in two other divisions as well. In the 8.5 division, Liz Iuliano and her partner Reid Jordan defeated the number four seed of Brady McNaughton and Leslie Cutchins in the finals. Brian and Tracy Horan roared through the 6.5 division taking out the number two seed in the first round, then the number three seed in the semis and winning the title by beating the number one seed Bill Kamarek and Liz Long. The number three seed of Frank Jastrzemski and Sandra Savino beat the number one seed Rhyan Finch and Kristina Chastain in the finals of the 7.5 division. A huge thanks to all of our sponsors, our Oceanfront Circle ladies for pouring their heart and soul into making it such a special event and to all of our participants for their continued support of this great cause.

This year’s USTA Mid-Atlantic convention was held at Trump National in Sterling, Virginia. Our tennis professionals always look forward to it as it’s a chance to network with the other area pros as well as to hear many interesting speakers. Workshops start at 8:00 am and go through to 6:00 pm Friday through Sunday, so it’s quite a lot to take in. Topics range from fitness and injury prevention drills, to court construction and maintenance, to running tournaments and kids’ programs. We always appreciate our club and our members who support our continuing education so that we can be at the cutting edge of our profession.
The USTA recently launched a massive initiative and investment in growing the game at the U10 level. Over 100 pros from all 17 sections around the country were invited to attend the Junior Pathway Symposium at the National Campus in Orlando, Florida, including our very own John Fraser. The main topic was Early Development Camps (EDC), that focus on the U10 age group. Pros were selected to host these camps with the intent of drawing as many kids as possible, follow a common curriculum developed by the USTA and move players along a simplified pathway based on competencies not age. The pathway goes from red ball to orange, orange to green and finally green to yellow. Each child gets an electronic evaluation (assessment) emailed to the parent at the end of the camp so that the parent knows exactly where their child is on the pathway based on a number of competencies (standards) outlined on the form. Each camp starts out with a parents’ meeting to inform parents of this initiative and all that it entails. This will better educate parents on how to proceed with their child whether it be moving up to the next level, staying a little longer at their level, how and which tournaments to enter as well as Junior Team Tennis participation. The pros spent three full days of training on how to execute a camp, strictly following the curriculum and why USTA wanted all pros to be on the same page. At the end of it the group left very inspired and motivated, not only to grow U10 tennis, but to retain children in our sport for the rest of their lives. PACC camp dates are as follows: 3/30, 4/13 and 5/11.
We tried something different this year for our St. Paddy's tennis social. This event was designed for the participant to experience what it feels like to play and cover the court like a pro. We used green dot (soft compression) tennis balls and played doubles on the singles court so no alleys. This allowed the net players to move across the net freely without fear of getting burned down the alley. Players could also take bigger cuts at the ball without overhitting since the balls were softer and easier to control.
It’s that time of year again for Lunch League to start! This is a great opportunity for women of all levels to come out and play against women from other clubs. Lunch League is eight weeks long and is a mix of home and away matches. B team begins Wednesday, April 24 and A team begins Friday, April 26. Interested? Please contact Mary Fay in the tennis shop at 757-428-7803.

Sports massage is a form of massage that utilizes certain strokes to help athletes obtain maximum performance and physical conditioning by increasing power, endurance and mobility - both before and after an event or exercise. Massage is particularly beneficial when an athlete is in training for an event. It’s also helpful for anyone who stretches physical limits through movement. Swimmers, weight lifters, runners, golfers, ball players, skaters, dancers, tennis players, musicians and boxers, as well as weekend warriors and those who practice strength training or aerobics have benefited from sports massage. Athletes have different massage needs at different times. Massage should be considered an important part of their training and recovery process.
Sports massage will increase circulation, flexibility and range of motion. This will reduce muscle pain and soreness, preparing muscles for dynamic movement. Pre-event massage can help prevent muscle and tendon injuries and reduce the strain and discomfort of training.
Recovery after a competition involves the normalization and repair of tissue. Post-event massage increases circulation, relieves muscle spasms, and prevents soreness. It is used to assist athletes in recovery and in regaining their pre-event condition by relaxing tight or fatigued muscles.
Brett has been licensed in massage therapy since 2005. He grew up in Maine and graduated from the University of New England where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Brett participated in athletics throughout school and continues to train and compete in grappling tournaments today. Massage therapy has helped him continue an active lifestyle and that is where his focus lies. Whether it's an active work schedule or recreational lifestyle, Brett wants to help people continue with the activities they enjoy through Swedish or sports massage therapy.
Throughout training and rigorous regular athletic activity, massage can help prevent injuries. Areas of muscular stress can result from repetitive or stressful motion and can lead to injury. Sports massage assists in relieving muscular stress and preventing injuries, enabling consistent training. Recovery is also a major factor in avoiding minor injuries that inhibit performance. Sports massage should not be seen as a reward at the end of a workout. It is an important tool for keeping athletes in good physical condition. As part of a regular maintenance program, sports massage is widely used by individuals, teams and professional athletes.

Registration for swim/dive teams will take place through the PACC mobile app or online through our website. Utilizing the mobile app will also allow members to register for swim and dive meets, lessons, swim clinics and other swimming and diving-related activities at the pool. Swim and dive team afternoon practices will begin May 20 and morning practices will start June 10.
