Renovation of the Aquatics Complex is set to begin Tuesday, September 8th. We hope you will join us in giving the current pool a final send off over Labor Day Weekend (more details on page 5). Don’t forget, you can stay up to date on renovation activities by visiting our PACC 20/20 & Beyond blog and following us on Facebook & Instagram.

Our contractor is making every effort to minimize impacts to our Membership during construction. However, we ask that you please note the following:

• We kindly ask that Members and Guests relay any questions/comments/concerns regarding construction activities to Bill Shonk at 757-440-3100 or wshonk@princessannecc.com so that we may address them with our contractor Compo Construction. Please do not address construction team members directly.

• Beginning August 24, the southwest parking lot (adjacent to the sports court) will be for construction parking/staging only. Member parking will be unavailable in this area until construction is complete. We thank you in advance for your understanding with this inconvenience and respectfully ask you to utilize the main east parking lot and northwest lower lot.

• Beginning August 24, entry to the Fitness Center will be permitted on the east side only. The west side doors will be used as emergency exits only.

• Beginning August 24, the sport court will be temporarily taken down as we relocate utilities. Don’t worry, the sport court will be back up and running when construction is over.

Play to Your Strengths to Lower Your Score | Matt Liebler, PGA

As a PGA Golf Instructor, I see most golfers become obsessive over the mechanics of their golf swing. Although proper mechanics are extremely important to the success of any golfer, a player’s strategy is equally important to lowering his or her score. Improving how to play is probably the quickest fix to achieve immediate results. This helps to improve one's confidence and adding confidence generates a 'snowball effect' to a player’s all-around game.

Doctor Bob Rotella, Virginia native and sports psychologist put it best when he said, “Golf is about how well you accept, respond to, and score with your misses much more so than it is a game of your perfect shots.” A main reason Tour players are so successful is the way they manage each hole they play. They know their strengths and weaknesses. Every player, no matter their skill level, should play to their strengths. Many golfers think, “I can’t even break 100! I don’t have any strengths!” They’re wrong. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It’s the golfer's roll to understand what they do best and take that into account when playing.

The following are my three basic tips to help you manage the course properly and allow you to play to your strengths:

1. Don't be afraid to lay up. If an approach shot requires a near perfect shot – take the trouble out of play. We call this laying up. When deciding where to lay up, determine how far you need to be to present the best opportunity on your next shot. For example – if you are 200 yards away and you feel that an 80-yard shot is your strength, then choose your 120-yard club for that shot. This will leave you with an 80-yard shot to the green, thus playing to your strength.

2. Play away from trouble when approaching the green. Too often we see the flagstick as our target because the ultimate goal is to get the ball in the hole. This can lead us to big trouble. When approaching the green aim for the middle of the green anytime there is trouble near the flag. Also, when the flagstick is placed near the edge of the green, be sure to aim at the wider side. For instance, aim to the right side if the flagstick is close to the left edge.

3. Limit the damage. Often times one poor shot leads to several. This is why we need to limit the damage when shots go astray. Instead of attempting the “miracle” shot, pitch back into the fairway from the deep rough or trees. You may not get the desired score on that particular hole but it will lead to less total strokes at the end of the day.

Much of this sounds relatively easy, but I find that most players never develop any type of game plan before a round. Lastly, many times I ask my students, “What’s your target?” Too often I get the response, “the fairway" or “the green” or sometimes the dreaded, “I'm not too sure!” None of those answers will lead to success. You must narrow your focus, create a game plan, and stick to it. Remember, playing to your strengths leads to more confidence and lower scores!

Congratulations!

Congrats to the team of Hyman and Olson for winning the 2020 James G. Parke Member-Guest. Congrats also to the runner-up team of Baker and Bresnahan.

How to Find Perfect Direction on your Crosscourt Backhand | Nathan Bolling

Hitting crosscourt on our non-dominant side can be difficult and feel really unnatural. One of the best ways to find your contact and the direction of the swing is to focus on the ball as if it was a clock. Swinging from 7 to 2 will help you find the outside of the ball keeping it crosscourt while still swinging up the ball in order to impart topspin. Try this visual next time you’re on the court to keep that backhand crosscourt and keep it nice and consistent.
