Message from the President

As I write this in August, I hope this message finds you and your family safe, healthy and enjoying the many amenities of the PACC. During these unprecedented times, we hope that you continue to find your Club as a safe haven.

Charles Dickens wrote in the Tale of Two Cities “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.”

The Best of times at PACC:

• We opened all areas of the Club as soon as allowable. The golf course and tennis courts have been open since the start of the pandemic. We have had record numbers of rounds, the golf course has never been better and we just finished one of the finest Men’s Member-Guest tournaments I’ve seen. There have been a record number of tennis court reservations and lesson/clinic/camp participants, we just concluded the Tennis Championship with record numbers witnessing the finals and pickle ball is continuing to grow.

• Curbside to-go service has been a hit, as were our weekly family meals. The Chesapeake Room, Upper Terrace, Linkhorn Lounge and Breakers opened months ago with limited seating and the 10th Tee has been serving the best hamburgers and hot dogs in town. Since March, to-go wine sales have sky rocketed.

• The pool has been open since Memorial Day. The swim team has had a record number of participants and has enjoyed festive inter-squad meets.

• The renovation of the new youth room was completed and children’s camps have been selling out all summer long.

• The Fitness Center has been open for months with group fitness classes being held anywhere and everywhere to include via Zoom, on the pool deck, pickle ball courts and in the Clubhouse.

• The Holly Beach Bungalow was completed and is being rented.

• The Building Committee received five bids for the new Aquatics Center and selected Compo Construction as our contractor. Construction is slated to begin September 8th and conclude by Memorial Day 2021.

The Worst of times at PACC:

• The COIVD-19 virus is still with us and will affect how we open facilities to full capacity until a vaccine is approved. The anxiety this has caused all of us, Member and Team, is real.

• While we yearn to gather and see each other’s smiling faces, Members are asked to continue to practice social distancing and to please wear face masks or coverings when indoors.

• It appears like there will not be in-class instruction in many of our colleges and grade schools.

• Limited event capacities have postponed weddings and celebrations for the foreseeable future.

As you can see, while COVID is still here, we have many things to be thankful for.

A huge thank you goes to all of our Members for your continued support of the Club during these trying times. I hope you received the correspondence regarding the $75 Food and Beverage credit that was given to each family as a small token of the Club’s gratitude. Even more, I hope you’ve already joined us to use your credit.

A special thanks also goes out to our PACC Operations Team for their unrelenting service.

Even in these unprecedented times, our goal remains the same – to exceed your expectations every time you visit the PACC. Please stay healthy and safe and we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Summer Fun at PACC

Membership

Recap | Random Act of Kindness Day

Members young and young-at-heart enjoyed a “pop-up” freeze pop party on the pool deck this summer to beat the heat! Assistant Manager – Clubhouse Operations Jennifer Garrott, Membership Director Courtney Whittemore and our fabulous PACC lifeguards were on hand to spread some cheer and a sweet treat.

PACC Car Decals

Over the summer, we experienced non-members using the Club parking lot. While we do have cameras in place and team members who assist in identifying non-members attempting to use the parking lot, to help us more easily identify member vehicles, we’ve obtained PACC decals. The cling-on (non-sticker) decals can be picked up at the front desk or administrative office and include a white logo on a clear background. While not mandatory, placing a decal on your vehicle will be a tremendous help to our team in ensuring our PACC property is protected for members only.

Membership Corporate Referral Program

As a reminder, if two (2) or more employees of the same company join within six (6) months of each other, they will both receive 25% off of the initiation fee of whichever membership class they joined. Offer not valid for existing members of more than six months. Please contact Membership Director Courtney Whittemore for any questions at cwhittemore@princessannecc.com or 757-428-4141 x313.

• In a pitcher, combine the wine, juice and pumpkin spice liqueur. Stir and pour into the rimmed glasses. Garnish with the pumpkin candy cinnamon sticks.

• Cook’s Note: If you cannot find pumpkin spice liqueur, combine 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice with 1 cup brandy in a container fitted with a lid. Shake vigorously and let sit for 1 day to infuse into the brandy.

The Golden Rules

The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.

“May I?”

Dear Rules Guru: When playing in a tournament with my partner, I need to be clear on the rules of golf. I have a fear of breaking a rule and penalizing our team. I must know what I am allowed to do; and what I am not allowed to do without a penalty.

1. May I accidentally kick my partner’s or opponent’s ball while searching for it? YOU MAY! (Refer to #1)

2. May I drop something on the green that makes my partner’s ball move before she has marked it? YOU MAY (Refer to #2)

3. May I repair spike marks on the green? YOU MAY (Refer to #3)

4. May I place my club in the sand, next to my ball, before I take my backswing? YOU MAY NOT! (Refer to #6)

5. May I take a practice swing, in a penalty area, while actually touching the ground? YOU MAY! (Refer to #7)

6. May I remove loose impediments from a penalty area and from the bunker ? YOU MAY! (Refer to #6 and #7)

7. May I accidentally hit my golf bag or my partner with my ball without a penalty? YOU MAY! (Refer to #11)

8. May I have at least five minutes to look for a lost ball? YOU MAY NOT! (Refer to #12)

9. May I switch a new ball for my original ball when taking relief? YOU MAY! (Refer to #10)

10. May I bring out a new putter if I accidentally throw my original one into the lake? YOU MAY NOT! (Refer to #14)

1 Ball Moved During Search

● If you move any player's ball (even your own) while searching for it, there is no penalty, just replace the ball

2 Ball Moved on Putting Green

● If you accidentally move any player's ball (even your own) on the putting green, there is no penalty, just replace the ball

● Once you have lifted and replaced your ball on the putting green, your ball owns that spot. If it then moves, you will always replace your ball no matter what caused the movement, including wind or gravity.

3

Repairing Damage

● You can repair almost any damage on the putting green, including:

● Spike marks

● Animal damage

● Any damage from a person or a ball

4

Touching Line of Play

● You are allowed to touch your line of play for any reason (including on the putting green).

5 Flagstick

● If your ball hits an unattended flagstick in the hole, there is no penalty

TAKING RELIEF

8 Dropping and Measuring Relief Area

● Drop your ball from knee height so that it lands in and comes to rest in the relief area.

● Your relief area is either one or two club-lengths, measured from the reference point (based on the Rule you are taking relief under).

● Measure club-lengths using the longest club in your bag other than your putter.

3 2

1

1 Stroke-and-Distance (red or yellow)

Play from the relief area based on where your previous stroke was made.

2 Back-On-the-Line (red or yellow)

Drop a ball within one club-length to either side of a straight line from the hole through the point where your ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, going back as far as you'd like.

3 Lateral Relief (red only)

Drop a ball within a two club-length relief area measured from where your ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, and no closer to the hole than that point.

PLAYING A BALL

11 Accidental Deflections

● There is no penalty if your ball in motion is accidentally deflected, including by:

Relaxed Restrictions in Bunkers

● You can touch or move loose impediments in a bunker, but be careful you don't move your ball when doing so or you'll get one penalty stroke.

● You cannot touch the sand with your club next to your ball, or during the backswing for your stroke.

● You also cannot touch the sand anywhere to test its condition or when making a practice swing.

7 Actions Allowed in Penalty Areas

● You are allowed to:

● Ground your club

● Take practice swings

● Take penalty area relief

● Touch water

● Remove loose impediments

EQUIPMENT

14 Club Damage

● You cannot replace any club that you damage during the round.

● Check to see if Model Local Rule G-9 is in effect, which would allow you to replace a broken or significantly damaged club.

15 Yardage Books

● There are limits on the size and scale of green-reading materials that you are allowed to use.

● This applies to all materials, including yardage books, but only when you use

Pro Shop News

We’ll have Lianne, Sierra, Andrea, Annika, Darby and Hope working the pro shop desk this Fall so stop in and see our latest from Babolat, the new Pure Drive, and from Wilson, the new Ultra. There are new shoe models from Wilson and Head to try as well. Come in and take out a demo for a test run and see how it can improve your game. As always, we want to remind you that your strings have around a three month shelf life in your racquet if you play more than twice a week and we will continue to offer next day turn around on restringing.

Stringing Tip: We should all be using a synthetic, natural gut or a hybrid (poly plus syn. gut) for better touch, feel and injury prevention. If you never break strings, you should be using the thinnest gauge of string available which is 18g which will have the most feel.

Poly is designed for high performance juniors, college players and tour players who need durability, otherwise they would be restringing their racquets every day. For the rest of us, a poly isn’t required for durability and there is a good chance that if we do use it, we will develop arm, wrist or shoulder trouble. The other problem with it is that it doesn’t break because it’s like wire, so you forget to restring after the recommended three month period when its performance drops off the cliff and it becomes loose and therefore unpredictable.

Adult Singles Club Championship

We were thrilled to get a record 91 tennis Members playing in seven different divisions in our Singles Club Championships this year! This tournament used to be in July, but the past few years it was moved to May in order to take advantage of the cooler weather. Due to COVID-19, we had to push it back to the summer so it ran for two weeks in July. We had a beautiful night for the finals. A huge thanks to all our participants for making it another record breaking Singles Club Championship! Here are the new Club champions:

We asked our trainers and instructors for their favorite health/fitness/nutrition/habit books. Whether looking for inspiration, information, or just something to dig into while ‘laying-low’, these ‘staff favorites’ will get you on the right track!

Recommended by Sabine: Younger Next Year/Younger Next Year for Women by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge MD. A fun book on keeping lean, fit and active as we age!

Recommended by Lisa: Just Breathe by Dan Brule Conscious breathing and meditation are two scientifically proven ways to significantly impact your health and well-being.

Recommended by Charles: Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, MD Dr. Perlmutter reviews how to eat to protect your brain and describes the effects healthy whole grains on our brain. Good read

Recommended by Crissy: Stop Chasing Pain Podcast by Perry Nickleson, DC, SFMA Offers insight into how the lymphatic system is the sewage system of our body. Mental stress can present itself as injuries. Interesting, new stuff.

Recommended by Larissa: The Fast Metabolism Diet & Cookbook & The Burn by Haylie Pomroy

Written by a scientist who knows how to make the body shed extra pounds. I did this program personally and could not believe how effective it was. Highly recommended!

Recommended by Mallory: Eat to Beat Disease by Dr. William LI Sensible, backed by science and actually put into practice as director Cleveland’s functional medicine clinic.

Fitness Success Story | Dave Worrall

Dave’s Story

At the best of times, I struggle to keep my workout routine from getting boring. This became much tougher after the lock-down in March, with gyms closing and workout equipment disappearing from shelves. An April storm helped rescue me when it blew a tree down in our front yard. During the cleanup, I realized that logs make excellent weights. I kept a 75 pounder, attached a boat strap, and have been using it for squats, farmer carries and swings, adding a little variety back into my at-home workouts.

Fortunately, I also discovered the PACC online classes. My wife and I have both taken advantage of the classes offered throughout the week and have mixed them up by doing them in different locations where the WiFi will reach. A little creativity and the classes have been the key to keeping active!

Aquatics From the Deep End

It won’t be long now before we bring an end to pool season at PACC. I hope that all of you have felt like the pool staff have exceeded your expectations. If we did not make this season one of the best for you and your family, please let me, the pool staff or the Pool Committee members know! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the lifeguard staff. Throughout the season, their commitment to a safe pool environment never wavered.

Thanks to the leadership of our coaching staff, Katie Lorenz, Kristen Zielinski, Bryan Rudolph, Emma Thompson, Madison Kirkman and Brynn Brazukas. We had over 120 swimmers and divers participate this summer. Despite the challenges that swimming and diving teams had to overcome, they were able to provide quality programs. Our dive team was able to host four dive meets. I know that all of our divers improved their skills over the course of the season. Our swim team was able to hold three intrasquad swim meets. It was great to have so many swimmers compete! Please join me in congratulating our swimmers and coaches for all of their hard work and dedication this season.

We are very excited about the building of the new aquatics facility starting September 8. The pool will feature a beach entry with various play water features. It will also include a six-lane, 25-meter competition section with two one-meter spring boards in the diving well. The deck will feature a cabana bar, soft seating, sling back chairs and lounges for that resort style feel!

In closing, I would like to thank all of the families that supported PACC Breakers this season; with special thanks to everyone who volunteered to help with scoring, judging and timing. Lastly, would like to thank the Pool Committee for all of their support and advice and their tireless efforts supporting all of the activities at the pool this summer.
