Message from the President

I hope this note finds everyone having enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends and I hope the New Year brings prosperity and good health to you all. I pray that when you receive this that a COVID-19 vaccine is on its way and we can begin to get back to some sort of normalcy.

These past months, with uncertainty and changing state mandated requirements brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, have had a major impact on our traditional festivities; the Oyster Roast was postponed and Thanksgiving Brunch, Traditional Christmas and the New Year’s Eve Party all were scaled back. But, even under these circumstances, all exceeded our expectations of excellent fun, food and service. Many thanks to Bill Shonk, Jennifer Garrott, Mardy Colling and their exceptional Team with a special thanks to Executive Chef Geoff Benson. Our goal remains the same – to exceed your expectations each and every time you visit the PACC and your PACC Team continues to find creative ways to do so.

I am pleased to announce our four incoming Directors who recently began their three-year terms. Kelly Disharoon will head the Youth Committee, Shannan Poteran will join the Pool Committee, Neil Brown will join the Tennis Committee and Bobby Beasley will head the Membership ID Committee.

The first phase of the PACC 20/20 & Beyond plan, which began in December 2019, has been completed. The second phase of PACC 20/20 & Beyond, the Aquatics Center, started in October with an opening slated for Memorial Day 2021. Please bear with us over the winter and spring months while this exciting new amenity is under construction.

In closing in these unprecedented times, I want to thank each and every one of you in helping to make the PACC a wonderful and special place. I look forward to seeing you this coming year at the Club – the best is yet to come.

With best wishes, Christopher J. Fanney

Up-to-Date from the General Manager

Happy New Year! As we begin 2021 our Operations Team is energized to focus on smart goals and strategic initiatives that enhance safety, technology, new system and facility opportunities, new membership trends and programming, and so much more. We are reminded of our operational mission that states “We are committed to utilizing our resources to continuously meet and exceed member expectations through ever-improving service.” As we strive towards this mission, we are constantly addressing the delicate balance of prudently “utilizing resources” while “exceeding member expectations.” Page nine of this issue shares more insights into how we are strategically addressing the valuable Member feedback garnered through the October survey. As always, I very much welcome your feedback and thoughts and may be reached on my direct line (757) 440-3100 / e-mail wshonk@princessannecc.com

The pages that immediately follow welcome many wonderful new Members that applied in September and October and as I scribe this in early December I am pleased to report to you that the Membership Committee is vetting sixteen December applications! A healthy Membership and stable dues base is the driving force of our operating budget and it has been inspiring to see so many new additions welcomed into the Princess Anne Family. Kudos to each of you who have introduced family and friends. As you have membership questions or someone you deem ideal for our Princess Anne Family, please contact Membership Director Courtney Whittemore via email at cwhittemore@princessannecc.com or by phone at (757) 428-4141, ext. 313.

Page thirteen in this Princess Anne Living recognizes our 2020 Operations Team Awards for Excellence Winners. My heart swells with a very deep pride to call each of these ladies and gentlemen teammates. We certainly look forward to a time very soon when our Team can safely gather together to fully honor these amazing devoted leaders. I invite you to pass on your congratulations when you see any of these winners.

I very much look forward to seeing you at The Princess Anne in 2021!

Since transitioning to his own membership, he has enjoyed participating on the Entertainment Committee and the Membership Identification Committee. Bobby is vice president with Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate where he handles leasing and sales throughout Hampton Roads and North Carolina. Medical school at Tulane followed and, eventually, an ER residency in Chicago where he met his wife, and future PACC tennis junkie, Julie. They moved to Virginia Beach in 2000 and, with one brief sojourn to Indiana, have been here ever since. Neil has served on the Tennis Committee for the last several years and has also actively recruited local tennis players to build the tennis program. Aquatics Complex Update

By the time you are reading this much will have been done in laying the ground work for the new aquatics complex. As I came from the construction site today, they were pouring the concrete for the footers of the entry building. I think that is when it hit me just how large this aquatics complex will be. I went upstairs to get a bird’s eye view and I was able to envision how all of the pieces would come together. This process has been so detailed and educational that it fascinates me at every turn. Every single detail has an impact on another such as underground irrigation, conduits carrying fiber/copper wiring, storm drainage, security and more. The synergy between the Compo Construction team and our Golf Maintenance Team has made this project a huge success. Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club Grounds Matt Boyce has been instrumental in ensuring the safety of our in ground irrigation that is so necessary for the entire Club campus. Things I never thought about such as watering the clay tennis courts, sprinklers for the flower beds throughout Club grounds and, of course, main water lines to all the outreach buildings; who knew that all these lines ran under our old pool!

In the upcoming months we will order our poolside furniture and Cabana equipment and design the final touches for lighting and landscaping. The best place to view the progress is the upstairs balcony of the clubhouse, so stop by and take a look. With the entry building and other major footings in place, the complete vision is started to emerge. These are very exciting times for the PACC family!

Membership Satisfaction Survey

In October, we conducted a Member satisfaction survey, specifically in regards to COVID-19 and how it has impacted Club operations. We are grateful to report that more than 400 Members took the time to provide valuable input that will assist our Board of Directors and Operations Team as we continue to navigate this ever-changing global pandemic. We cannot thank you enough for your feedback.

It was evident in the survey that our Membership has strong feelings on both sides of the topic. Key takeaways from the survey surrounded mask wearing and social distancing among our PACC Members, specifically that Members would like to see their fellow Members more engaged in these two practices. Included to the left is a quick snap-shot of these key results for your reference.

Your Operations Team is working diligently to provide as many services and programs as safely possible for our Members and Team. Changes to the Governor’s executive orders can come at any moment and we must adhere to the standards therein in order to maintain the licenses needed to operate your Club. While we enjoy certain benefits as a private Club, we are not exempt from complying with executive orders and federal regulations concerning COVID-19. We feel so grateful that we are able to provide the amenities and social gatherings that we currently can to our Members, in your safe haven, during this difficult time, but must again ask for your assistance in helping us meet these requirements.

As we move forward with the feedback garnered from the survey, I wanted to transparently share with our Princess Anne Member family that we have broken the feedback down by department. Each department is graded on a fivepoint scale, and any department with a ranking of three or lower has been tasked to create an action plan that they will review with their respective Member committees to develop improvements. It is our hope that these action plans will assist us in meeting our Members’ expectations during these trying times and beyond into better and brighter days.

9 Princess Anne Living | January/February 2021

Membership Matters

One point of feedback garnered from the survey was that Members would like more communication from your Club leadership. I look forward to making my recent “Manager’s Memo” email a more frequent occurrence to keep you informed and up-to-date with the goings-on at your “home away from home.”

If you have any questions at all surrounding the results of our recent survey or my previous email sent to the Membership about updated COVID-19 protocols, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on my direct line at 757-440-3100.

Thankful for our Thanksgiving Teamwork!

As I write this, my Team and I have just finished packing up our leftovers from Thanksgiving and are strapping on our holiday boots to prepare for the Christmas holiday. As I reflect on this past year, there have been so many challenges to overcome but none as trying as this Thanksgiving. I was asked by many of you to tell our story.

There was an overwhelming response to our Thanksgiving to-go offerings this year with over 100 orders! Throughout the week, our front and back of the house Team worked diligently putting together the orders for pick-up the day before Thanksgiving. By the end of the night on Tuesday the 24th, everything was neatly labeled and stored in our large walk-in refrigerator. As the morning Team arrived, they immediately noticed the fridge had malfunctioned and the temperature had risen above acceptable levels. Executive Chef Geoff Benson and I arrived on site and a command decision was made to remake every order from scratch. There would be no chances taken and we knew we couldn’t let our Members down for this very special holiday. We canvased the city for the last turkeys, yams, potatoes and more, and sprinted back to begin the remake. Everyone was involved. Calls were made delaying the pickups until the following day, Thanksgiving. Turkeys were baked, potatoes were peeled, beans were snapped, you get the idea. By midnight, it was all complete...again. The orders were boxed and we all high-fived and left for a brief rest. The Team was back again by 6:00 am to make sure that we were ready for early Thanksgiving pickups. These were completed by 11:00 am, just in time to start the first seating for our Thanksgiving Brunch. As I think back on those last 48 hours, my heart is filled with pride, acknowledging the incredible teamwork and dedication that my Team displayed with the most can-do attitude. It was truly amazing and a joy to be a part of. We all have something to be grateful for during these trying times and my Team is certainly something that I am truly grateful for. Happy New Year!

We have some amazingly talented members at the PACC! From musicians, to artists, to culinary masters and beyond, we are always so impressed to see and hear of your wonderful accomplishments! We want to share these personal pastimes in a new segment called Hobby Highlights.

Please reach out to Marketing & Communications Director Kristen Bunting at kbunting@princessannecc.com to share photos and brief stories about your passion. We can’t wait to learn more about you!

Barry Purcell | Artist

Barry has been an artist his entire life, but he took an unusual path to arrive at his first big show in December of 2019. Most of his life, he has been an accomplished athlete and an executive at investment management firms. A graduate of Collegiate School in Richmond, Purcell started as an art major at the University of South Carolina, where he was a varsity soccer player on full scholarship for a top 10 team at the time. One of the reasons he abandoned his art major were the odd looks he received showing up to classes dressed like a jock in sweat clothes. “I felt out of place, bottom line,” he says.

Purcell would transfer to James Madison University in fall of 1993, where he earned All-American status as the Divison -1 soccer team’s goalie and captain, a team ranked as high #2 in the nation and never outside the Top 20. After college, he played one year of professional soccer for the Richmond Kickers. But he loved painting, he says, and never stopped.

After college there was business school and law school, then trips to Asia where Purcell began working for a hedge fund in association with Blue Pool Capital, now the family office for one of the founders of Alibaba Group, a Chinese internet conglomerate. Purcell spent the next decade working in the international finance and investment world. The Richmond Times-Dispatch once published a story about him after he saved the life of a woman who was choking on her lunch during a business meeting at the Berkley Hotel. As she turned blue and others stared, Purcell leapt to her aid and applied the Heimlich maneuver. The kicker? She was a nurse at Virginia Commonwealth University who taught emergency medicine, including the Heimlich maneuver. Four years ago, Purcell’s life underwent a major upheaval that would find him turning to his life-long love of art to make sense of it all.

In 2016, he co-founded a New York based private investment firm, not knowing he was about to lose several close family members including his mother, grandmother, an uncle in a plane crash and an influential mentor, he says. “Ultimately, I found a different perspective,” he recalls. “I was feeling shook up, and developed the idea of juxtaposing the concept of being in the

11 Princess Anne Living | January/February 2021

Membership Matters

moment or present with the concept of ruminations typically associated with depression”. Purcell’s show at Reynolds Gallery, “A Place and Time,” involved tiled iPhone photos that combine images of nature in geometric patterns that require close viewing. Each colorful work represents one moment and features the latitude, longitude, day and time the images were taken. “Your reality is comprised of your failures, happiness, all that creates what you see,” he says. “But when you can really break it down and look at things like the ocean while one in present, you can create a pattern of positive thoughts or images.”

After some encouragement from a corporate art buyer, a professor at the VCU School of Art and the owners of Reynolds Gallery, Purcell was eventually invited to present his portfolio at the Reynolds Gallery, a well-known and respected gallery in Richmond. “‘A Place and Time’ presented a series of deeply saturated photo collages. The works are comprised of repeated photographs, each captured from a dramatic perspective,” notes Alice Livingston, director of Reynolds Gallery. “The gallery has always focused on exhibiting emerging artists, and we are proud to support Barry in his new focus. Barry’s first career has developed an incredible network of friends and supporters, and we are excited that Reynolds Gallery can serve as a connector between that community and Richmond’s contemporary art scene. We had guests tonight coming in from Hong Kong, New York, and throughout the East Coast.”

"Future Steve" This photo was taken on 53th Street. Do you recognize this legendary beach walker? Barry named the piece after one of our members.

Between the bridges at the bay bridge tunnel

Purcell, a previous Style Top 40 under 40 winner who helped start the Massey Alliance at VCU’s Massey Cancer Center, is still active as an investor, Vice Chairman of the JMU Foundation’s, Chairman of the JMU Endowment Investment Committee and Chairman of Parkstone Communities.

CourseGolf Course & Grounds Update

Changing with the Seasons

As we find ourselves in the winter season, the Golf Course Maintenance Team has a chance to evaluate our maintenance programs. While many activities remain constant, we shift our focus to different areas of the course as the seasons change. The peak of summer will bring about daily operations to prepare the golf course for play, while the cold of winter brings an opportunity to enhance the property and prepare for the upcoming season.

So what are some areas we focus on from season to season? What do those maintenance folks do when it snows? Here is a brief glimpse into the yearly maintenance goals at the Princess Anne!

Winter | One of the first questions we hear is “What do you do during the winter months?” Many are often surprised to hear of the efforts put forth during this time. With a smaller Team than the warmer parts of the year, this is our opportunity to maintain equipment and facilities, as well as complete projects on the golf course. Last winter, we completed cart path and bunker projects but typically it’s trimming trees, organizing the shop and getting to small projects that are low priority during the growing season. Equipment Technician Wesley McClung works to sharpen mowers and service nearly every piece of equipment in our fleet. Additionally, we take advantage of dormant Bermudagrass to make herbicide treatments throughout the property. Without question, the winter months are an excellent opportunity to prepare for the upcoming year.

Spring | This is an exciting time of year for us on the Golf Course Maintenance Team. You can typically find us finishing up projects from the winter months while welcoming a steady amount of play on the golf course. The pine straw bales are delivered by the truckload and the flowers at the clubhouse are a welcome sign of warmer weather. The spring months are a busy time for our Team as we push our playing surfaces with sand topdressing, aerification and nutrient applications. We also begin cleaning up perimeter areas on the property as by now, we are looking ahead to various opportunities for the golf course to be a great “showcase” of the Princess Anne Country Club.

Summer | This is the most active time of year for the golf course. As summer begins, the maintenance Team has already completed various practices on greens, including Spring aerification and numerous applications of topdressing sand. As the Bermudagrass has begun growing by now, we make efforts to improve fairway and approach playability with sand topdressing, appropriate fertilizer and a height of cut that promotes a fair and enjoyable lie for your golf ball. Moisture management is key to providing healthy and enjoyable putting surfaces as we balance playability with plant health to provide the best possible experience for all who play the Princess Anne.

Autumn | This time of year is always welcomed by the maintenance Team as we have broken through the heat of summer and host a few months of beautiful weather. This is a great time to clean up some perimeter areas on the golf course and work on projects, although it won’t be long until the leaves begin to fall! Keeping the property clean of debris, working on drainage projects and leaf management become major focuses of our operation and that increases even more with a passing tropical storm or hurricane.

We look forward to seeing everyone in all seasons of the year! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at mboyce@ princessannecc.com

The Golden Rules

GOLFERS ALERT!

How

the Rules

of Golf can Help You Shoot Lower Scores!

I always thought the Rules of Golf were punishing, penalizing and pricey! It was almost better to ignore them because it always cost me a few strokes when I played by the rules.

But now I just heard that: If you know the Rules of Golf you can actually lower your scores!" This is hard to believe. How is this possible?

1. Is it possible to get free relief that allows you to move from the rough to the fairway? That seems unbelievable!

“Free relief” usually applies to situations where the lie of the ball, the stance or the swing has interference from an abnormal course condition. Let’s assume your ball is in the rough and you must stand on a sprinkler head to play the shot. You are entitled to a free drop. Determine your nearest point of relief and drop within one driver length. The drop must be in the general area which includes both the fairway and the rough. So, yes, you may move from the rough to the fairway. The same would apply if you had interference from ground under repair, casual water or an embedded ball.

2. How can the Rules of Golf help me lower my score in the bunker?

The Rules now allow you to move most anything in a bunker except sand. So you can move leaves, rocks, trash, pine cones, etc.. One caveat; if you move the ball when

moving a loose impediment there is a one stroke penalty. To save time you can rake footprints before you play your shot, so long as you are not intentionally testing the sand and the area is not right in front of or behind the ball.

If you decide your shot from the bunker is just too difficult and the drop area for unplayable ball relief is no better, you can now drop outside the bunker for a two stroke penalty.

3. Now that fall is here, the rough is tall and the leaves are on the course, I often have to search for my ball. How can the Rules help me here?

This is another player friendly rule change. The player is no longer penalized for accidentally moving her ball while searching for it. She may now rake through leaves, move sticks and take other reasonable actions to find her ball with no fear of a one stroke penalty.

21 Princess Anne Living | January/February 2021

Putting green Rules are now much more player friendly. You may repair spike marks and other damage to the green that was done by other players. This includes damage to the hole.

If you accidentally move any ball on the green there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. This is true no matter if the ball was kicked, hit with a practice swing or some similar mishap.

5. If my ball ends up in a penalty area and looks playable, I may want to try to hit it as it lies. How can the Rules of Golf help me when I am in this situation, so that I can get out without taking a penalty stroke?

Under the new Rules a ball may be played from a penalty area under the same Rules that apply in the general area. This means you may move loose impediments and ground your club in the penalty area. Another benefit is that the expanded definition of a penalty area allows the red line to be located closer to the maintained area of the hole, thus giving the player a much better relief area than the prior rules allowed.

From the Gallery – Questions from our Members

Dear Rules Guru: On hole #15 my shot landed on the high side, but short of the green. It was a windy day! The ball had come to rest. As I was approaching the hole, the ball began to roll onto the green. Should I have returned the ball to its approximate original position or should I have putted on the green where it finally rested?

Rule 9.3 covers this situation and is quite clear. “If natural forces (such as wind or water) cause a player’s ball at rest to move, there is no penalty and the ball must be played from its new spot. So now you will be putting on the green instead of chipping onto the green.

4. How can the Rules of Golf help me on the putting green?

Junior Golf Year in Review

The Princess Anne Junior Golf Program continues to shine even in COVID times. Mama Birdie continued to expose our 4-5 year old junior golfers to the game through fun games and stories. Opportunities in this program included learning safety and the basic FUNdamentals of golf.

Our Operation 36 Academy helped our 6-12 year old golfers develop their skills through weekly clinics. Upon completion of this course, participants have the opportunity to showcase their skills in an OP36 nine-hole challenge where the goal is to shoot 36 or better from 25 yards.

While Virginia Beach Junior League was not held in 2020, we look forward to continuing this program, while remaining conscious of social distancing guidelines. With the addition of two new Team Members, Director of Instruction Davis Whitmer and PGA Professional Rupe Taylor, The Princess Anne Junior Golf Academy will continue to provide the platform for junior golfers to achieve their goals for years to come.

While we did not award a Beck-Palolini winner in 2020 due to COVID-19, we did have several junior golfers excel on the course this summer. Congratulations to Miller Carr for his victory in the 2020 W. Peyton May Junior Club Championship. Miller continues to achieve at a high level throughout local and state competitions. We would also like to recognize both Fin Worrall and Max Bradshaw who both qualified for the 2020 US Kids' World Championship at Pinehurst. Both enjoyed other successes on the golf course as well. Fin made a double eagle on our sixth hole while Max recorded his personal best nine-hole score of 30 (six under par). As you can see, the future looks bright for junior golf at the Princess Anne!

PALG Year in Review

While 2020 presented the PALG with challenges surrounding COVID-19, the ladies continued to show support of this incredible program. Spanning over six months of the calendar, participation remained strong through the end of the fall. Golf has truly become a safe haven for all involved.

There are still a tremendous amount of highlights which took place throughout the year. We were unable to host the 2020 Martha Macklin Smith Ladies Member Guest, but the other four Championship winners are listed below:

2020 Joanne R. Neff Ladies Spring Handicap Emily Mills

2020 Leo V. Kernan Ladies Member - Member Jeanne Beck & Susan Wight

2020 Louis H. Windholz Ladies Club Championship Jeanne Beck

2020 Eugene Lee Parker Senior Ladies Club Championship Babs Neff

We are incredibly grateful to PALG Chair Jeanne Beck for her unwavering leadership in these trying times. She has guided us to an incredibly strong place as an association. We anticipate fantastic opportunities for the PALG to continue thriving in 2021, regardless of COVID-19.

PASMGA Year In Review

The Princess Anne Senior Men’s Golf Association continues to provide an opportunity each week for our male golfers with more experience to play golf and grow friendships through the game. We averaged 40 players each Wednesday and grew our base of players from 92 in 2019 to 95 different individuals this season. We continue to seek as many opportunities to play this wonderful game as we can and did so this past year through new formats and adapting to the COVID-19 restrictions that were presented to us. We adapted from shotguns to tee times and even made accommodations for the PASMGA weekly lunch to continue while being socially distant.

Our 2020 Senior Cup Champion and PASMGA Player of the Year was Mike Clark. Mike was one of the most frequent players this past season and the strong play of his teammates helped him win the season points title.

With all of the constant changes due to the global pandemic, all of the association’s success is attributed to the hard work and dedication of our 2020 board and officers: President Vince Olivieri, Vice President Mickey Walker, Secretary Jim Allen, Treasurer Jim Gregory and Assistant Treasurer Charlie Greiner. Our officers included Steve Houfek, Hill Ellett, Jim Wolcott and Lee Entsminger.

Tennis

Talk

We trust you all had a wonderful holiday break and are ready to get back on the courts. We are hoping to continue with the huge momentum we built over the past year with record breaking participation in not only our tournaments but also our kids’ camps. We will have a lot more fun things for you to participate in this year so please refer to our calendar for 2021 so you don’t miss out! If you haven’t heard, we have some sad news from the tennis department that our beloved Mary Fay is no longer at PACC. She and her husband have moved back to Chicago permanently, making way for our new hire, Dajana Cvjetkovic (pronounced Diana), who spent the better part of November being trained by Mary. Please see Dajana’s bio below. Other big news is that our flagship event, the much anticipated CHKD Winter Open Mixed Doubles tournament, has been postponed to May 20-23 due to Covid. Registration for the event will now open for “members and sponsors only” on March 1st and then will be open to the public on April 1st. We’ve also moved our Men’s and Women’s Singles Club Championships up a week to April 30-May 14 to accommodate the new date for CHKD. Our junior tennis programs will start back up the second week in January.

TENNIS TALK

Meet the New Tennis Shop Manager – Dajana Cvjetkovic

Dajana was born in Neu-Ulm, Germany. When she was six years old she moved to Bosnia and Herzegovina with her family where she grew up, played tennis and finished high school. Dajana was a national champion twice and represented her country in numerous international tournaments. After high school, she moved to Virginia and played Division I college tennis for Norfolk State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in marketing. She previously worked as a pro shop manager and at the Meadow Club of Southampton in New York. Dajana’s parents Jelena and Mico are also involved in tennis industry. Her father is a tennis coach and her brother Luka is one of the top ranked tennis players in Europe. In her free time, Dajana likes to read, run, listen to music and spend time with friends and family.

Thanksgiving Day Cardio

Thank you again to everyone who came out to enjoy one of our favorite traditions, the Annual Thanksgiving Cardio. As always, it was very well attended with 32 adults and 14 juniors. Those who support it enjoy coming out to get their workout in before the family feast!

Tennis/Pickleball Dress Code

We have noticed a slip in our dress code lately, so we wanted to remind everyone that whether you’re playing tennis or pickleball you are required to adhere to this dress code. This applies to kids too. Boys, just like men, are to wear half white, either white shorts or a white shirt. The only exception to this is if you have an outfit that was sold as a unit so like a “Nadal outfit” or a “Federer outfit” (as shown) where the shirt and shorts are effectively a matching suit, then you can wear colors. Girls, just like women, are to wear proper tennis attire so skirt/shorts/leggings but no bike shorts unless worn with a skirt. Tops are to be proper length so no exposed midriffs. For both men and women, tennis specific shoes are required so no running shoes, cross trainers or basketball shoes are allowed.

5th Annual Monarch Smash Pro-Am Event

Every year, ODU Men’s Tennis Team puts on this event as a fundraiser for their program where they invite our guys to come and spend the day with them. It’s so nice to see Members of our Club giving back to our local college sports programs. A huge thanks to Brad Hobbs, Wayne Wilbanks, Allan Parrott, Scott Baxter and Don Crigger who donated to the cause and got to go out and play some great matches with the ODU team. The winners were our own Scott Baxter and Norfolk Yacht’s Alfredo Rodriguez. Congrats guys!

Nate's Tip of the Month | How to Hit the Drop Shot

The drop shot has become one of the prominent weapons on tour, especially during the clay court season. It is a great weapon and can be utilized by a wide variety of skill levels as long as they’re aware of several factors that influence the success of the drop shot. These include the following:

1. when to use it

2. how to use it

3. how to hit it

When to use it may be of the most importance. Regardless of how sufficient the technique is, hitting the drop shot from the wrong position will make it difficult to execute. When hitting the drop shot, we want to be sure that we are inside the baseline and our opponent is ideally pushed behind their baseline. This will give you greater margin for error and make it more difficult for your opponent to track down the drop shot.

This takes us to our second point, how to use it. All too often when hitting the drop shot we try to hit a winner. By doing so we go for more than necessary and often miss the shot entirely. When our position on the court is correct we want to use the drop shot to simply set up an attacking play. By bringing the opponent to the net under stress we can simply pass or lob them on the incoming ball. Another great play is to meet them at net and put away the following volley after executing the drop shot. Winners should be a result of supreme positioning not the super deluxe drop shot.

Speaking of super deluxe drop shots, in the picture of Andy Murray you will see a drop shot using excessive backspin. This drop shot will result in ball that lands erratically with the potential to even travel back over the net. Although impressive, it is extremely difficult to execute. Unfortunately, because we see the pros do it, it’s often what we try to emulate. The pros are only using this particular drop shot when they are truly feeling it, otherwise they’re using a more traditional drop shot. So how to hit a traditional drop shot? Well, it’s all about feel. We want to use a continental grip and soften the hands upon impact of the incoming ball. The goal is to absorb pace and simply provide a ramp with the racquet face that deflects the ball up. The movement we want to use is a slice that travels high to low from our shoulder to our hip. If the racquet moves beyond that and gets too big you’ll end up hitting more backspin but the result will be rather difficult to control. If you want to improve the drop shot you can simply move the racquet on a path similar to the inside of the bowl, this will give you more spin but allow more feel, assisting in control.

Next time you’re on the court, push your opponent deep into their backcourt and implement the drop shot with your court positioning being inside the baseline. As your opponent scrambles to retrieve the ball, meet them at the net for the easy put away!

Fitness & Wellness

Do You Zoom?

Why Zoom?

We all miss being together and sharing energy and motivation in a group setting. But Members have found Zoom classes, though different, to have many unanticipated benefits. They are here to stay at the PACC!

• Convenience & Time | No need to spend time dressing-up or driving back and forth from the Club. Just follow your link five-minutes before your class and you are good to go.

• Continuity & Accountability | Members who have been Zooming since quarantine have found it easier to stay active, connected and accountable. They also have the benefit of Zoom traveling with them when they are out of town. Unlike a live group class, it will travel with you!

• Dependable Instruction | We know that there are many virtual options out there, but there is nothing quite like connecting with instructors and other Members. And, well, our instructors really are the perfect blend of knowledgeable, motivating and caring!

How To Zoom

• Register for any class through your PACC mobile app or website. Registration is required for all classes at least two hours before class start time.

• You will receive an email with class link at least one hour before class start time. If you have not already downloaded the Zoom app, you will be prompted to do so.

• Please make sure your email is correct in the PACC database/app. You can update your address right from your app under "My Profile." The email will go to the address on file.

• It is recommended that you follow your link to the Zoom class at least five minutes before class start time.

Fitness

I am terrible at motivating myself to work out but the PACC Zoom fitness classes have kept me sane and very active since March! I love the variety of classes and the instructors keep it challenging and fun. I’d highly recommend giving them a try!

COVID brought a wonderful benefit for me. Zoom classes!!!

In April, I started tuning in to almost every class offered! I found I was taking classes I might not have tried in person. Zoom has the added benefit of going where I go. We also have the best teachers for our classes. I rated them triple A, Always Absolutely Amazing!! Having Zoom available has been a big part of my weight lossthanks Zoom!

Fitness & Wellness

I enjoy the convenience of the Zoom classes because:

• it saves driving time

• there are no parking issues (especially with the construction)

• inclement weather is not a factor or excuse

• you can listen to your own music

• there are no worries about your refreshments and no need to dress up!

Thank you, thank you, Andrea and the PACC Fitness Team for working so hard to keep us active. With PACC Zoom classes, I can easily connect to innovative instructors and my exercise buddies – so much more engaging than impersonal videos – and with the variety of offerings, I can challenge myself to keep moving, relieve stress and build a few muscles. Plus, there is always something in every class that makes me smile, and that’s quite special in our COVID-19 world.

I have really enjoyed the classes! The enthusiastic instructors gear it so that all ages and levels can easily participate by showing different moderations. There are lots of classes to choose from…something for everyone! I’ve been on board since the beginning. I would have gone crazy without the classes!
