Up-to-Date from the General Manager 2 Welcome New Members 3
See you at the Princess Anne!
The next eleven pages introduce forty-three new families into our Princess Anne Family. It has been inspiring to see so many legacy and new families join the Club this year and we invite you take a moment to read their bios and welcome them into the Princess Anne Family.
Up-to-Date from the General Manager
A special thanks to Bill Shonk and his Team. They have been fantastic. The time they spend behind-the-scenes to provide magnificent products and service, with limited staff, has been mind boggling. Nothing will be more evident than the thank you party the Team will put on for you at the Annual Meeting & Dinner, Friday, October 29.
As you are reading this, I hope you have had a chance to take a dip in our new pool, imbibe at the Cabana, take a nap or enjoy all the aquatic toys with your children or grandchildren at our new aquatics complex.
Thank you for your support,
William S. Shonk, CCM, CCE General Manager

Thanks to you, the Members, and our incredible Team, golf and tennis are at record play, pickleball is blossoming and, even under restrictions, fitness usage is up. You all have been incredible in supporting our dining at Breakers, The Chesapeake and to-go dining. Wine sales are through the roof. Because of you, we are as strong as ever.
Very few realize the unique demands put upon a private club volunteer president and no one could have anticipated the truly unprecedented circumstances President Chris Fanney would face when he started his term as Princess Anne Country Club’s 50th President nearly two years ago. President Fanney has met each situation with a calming influence, sage wisdom and an encouraging can-do attitude. His ubiquitous presence, no-nonsense acumen and tireless devotion has inspired Club Members and Team Members alike and emboldened our Princess Anne Family in so many ways
President Fanney’s amazing Princess Anne leadership extends far beyond his extraordinary terms as President, these past two years. He has devoted countless hours over the past decade and more, approaching his volunteer service with a deep love, special respect and open mind, to take the appropriate actions to best serve your Club. He worked tirelessly on the Centennial Committee to preserve The Princess Anne’s heritage by publishing Reflections of the First One Hundred Years. He chaired the PGA Golf Professional Search and Entertainment Committees, served as Vice-President and on the Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club Grounds Selection Committee – and so much more. Through all of this it has been inspiring to witness and learn from President Fanney’s selfless and consistent leadership style. Chris, I will forever be grateful for your mentoring and friendship and hope that in the days ahead, the Princess Anne Family can fully express our gratitude to you, Toby and the entire Fanney Family.
Since October first we have taken in 95 new Member families. Record numbers. Any of you new Members reading this, I thank you for joining our Princess Anne Family.

Message from the President
Christopher J. Fanney
It’s been 442 days since the beginning of the restrictions that have been placed on the Club due to the COVID-19 virus. Now we’re back – completely open. We have pushed the envelope to keep the Club open to its maximum during this time thanks to the innovation and hard work of Bill Shonk and his Team.
Paul and Kimberley Archer and their four children: Lindsey (20), Lauren (16), Ryan (13), and Kyle (13) live in Chevy Chase, MD, but one day wish to make Virginia Beach their home. They enjoyed being able to spend extra time at their second home on 69th Street this past year and visit with Paul’s parents who reside here. Paul’s grandparents were original builders in Bay Colony and Paul spent his summers and most holidays in Virginia Beach. After college, Paul was commissioned into the Navy and purchased a small cottage on Atlantic & 81st, which they still own. Paul and Kimberly spend most weekday evenings and weekends around the Washington D.C. area shuttling and cheering on their children at multiple field hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling and lacrosse sporting events. The Archers look forward to adding golf and tennis to their list of sports, making new friends in the community and enjoying all that the PACC has to offer!
Michelle grew up in Chesapeake and is a “double Hoo” graduate of the University of Virginia. Nate is from South Dakota, a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. They met each other in Charlottesville in 2006 while Michelle was in graduate engineering school and Nate was completing his anesthesiology residency. After 12 years in San Diego, Michelle and Nate decided to return to Virginia to be close to family. Nate started at CHKD last August as a pediatric anesthesiologist and Michelle is enjoying time at home chasing William (2) around the Oceanfront. Nate, Michelle and William hope to make many friends and memories at PACC, maybe even a hole-in-one, while contributing to the growth and development of the Club and the community.
Michelle, Nathan & William Brakke

The Tiberios recently moved back to Bay Colony from Southern Maryland. While originally from Pittsburgh (Richard) and Toronto, Ontario (Jessica), Bay Colony/VB is now what the family calls home. The Tiberios are avid NHL fans and have a split home between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, so if you root for the Caps or the Bruins, you may want to avoid the topic. Richard enjoys outdoor activities, especially surfing and riding bikes around the neighborhood with the boys. You may find Richard out on the links, but if you see a driver in his hand, you may want to take cover. It’s anyone’s guess where it’ll end up! Jessica loves cooking and baking and generally relaxing after wrangling the boys, Luke (5), Gregory (3) and Benjamin (8 mo), all day. The Tiberio boys are looking forward to dabbling into the golf scene for the first time and spending all summer by the new pool. CANNONBALL!
Sunny & Chris are long-time residents of Virginia Beach, attending area high schools and college at UVA and William & Mary, respectively. In her leisure time, Sunny enjoys playing golf and tennis as well as the violin. Chris is a Certified Public Accountant and has worked in various healthcare analytics roles for Anthem over the past 10 years. Currently, he is the Director of Reporting and Data Analysis overseeing healthcare insights for Anthem’s 14 commercial and specialty markets as well as their national group segment. In his leisure time, Chris enjoys the beach and various related activities such as surfing, kitesurfing and hydro-foiling as well as golf.

If the player can advance his ball from the penalty area, what is he allowed to do?
The Princess Anne Lady Golfers sponsor a “Rules Walk” two or three times a year. It is open to all interested Members. The rules are demonstrated on the course as they might occur at the PACC. The walks are held on Mondays so as not to affect golfers on the course. Richard Wight, a USGA Rules Official, accompanies us and explains the correct procedures on how to take relief, penalties and new Rules additions or changes. We usually visit four holes and cover many situations. The emphasis is to educate Members about USGA rule situations that occur and how to correctly deal with them.

HOLE NUMBER ONE
Playing the ball from the original spot is the same.
The following examples are just a few of the rules we addressed at the last Rules Walk:

Answer: Our diagram on the next page shows three scenarios for a ball that ends up in the water:
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220916202228-f8041fa83e4078c2ebce6adc374ef1e6/v1/2c5ae268f2c4fdd7fab17146c7f46456.jpeg)
3. The spot where the ball last crossed the red line is on the green side of the penalty area, so the player may drop within two driver lengths of that point on the green side of the penalty area.
2. Playing from back on the line is not available as that would still be in the penalty area which is not allowed and not even reasonable if it were.

The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.

What is a “Rules Walk”?
Ball B: The ball lands on the greenside of the water, but hits below the red line and ends up in the water. For a one-stroke penalty the player has the exact same options as with ball C. The spot where the ball last crossed the red line is on the fairway side of the water. The fact that the ball landed on terra firma and not in the water is not relevant because the ball never cleared the red line on the greenside of the penalty area.
Question 1: How does a golfer proceed when his ball goes in the water on number one? What is the penalty, how does he get relief and does it matter where the ball rests?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220916202228-f8041fa83e4078c2ebce6adc374ef1e6/v1/e9a7e2a737586161fba5510f398adeff.jpeg)
Ball A: The ball lands above the red line on the green side of the penalty area and ends up in the water. For a one-stroke penalty the player has the same options as for Balls B & C but the reference point for taking relief produces a much different 1.result.
The Golden Rules

3. The player may drop within one driver length of a spot on a line going straight back from the hole though the estimated spot where the ball crossed the red line. The player may go back as far as they wish.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220916202228-f8041fa83e4078c2ebce6adc374ef1e6/v1/88fa237daf5466c96fd3355391fec9f0.jpeg)
Ball C: The ball lies outside of this area, but the player has interference from the fence for his swing and/or stance. Again, the relief procedure is the same. Determine the nearest point of complete relief and drop a ball within one driver length of that point.

Ball lost in this area: There is no penalty for a ball lost in this area. The player must estimate where the ball crossed into the area. This is deemed to be where the ball is lying. Relief is then taken just as with the previous situations.

2. The spot where the ball crossed the red line before entering the water must be estimated; the player may drop a ball within two driver lengths of this spot, no closer to the hole.
1. The player may drop another ball within one driver length from where the previous shot was played.

Ball B: The ball is on the road. The relief procedure is identical to that for Ball A. In this case the question is on which side of the road is the nearest point of relief. The player must determine this. He does not get a choice.
HOLE NUMBER TWO
Question 1: It has happened that the tee shot on #2 landed on the road instead of the green! How does the golfer take relief and what is the penalty? The fence is often an interference as well, either when taking relief or when the tee shot lands near the fence. What is the relief and the penalty here?
In all cases, when the ball is dropped it must remain within the one or two driver lengths which define the relief area. If it rolls outside this area it must be re-dropped. If this happens twice, the ball is placed on the spot where it landed before rolling out of the area.
Ball A: The ball is lying in the ditch. To take relief, the player must determine the spot nearest to where the ball lies that is not closer to the hole. They may then drop within one driver length of that spot. The diagram shows three potential spots. One of these is determined to be the nearest point to the ball. The drop area shown is one driver length, no closer to the hole. Note: the ball when dropped must land in and come to rest within the driver length. The relief area from the ditch includes the fence.
Ball C: The ball crosses into the water on the fairway side of the water, never touching the ground on the green side. For a one-stroke penalty, the player has three options (assuming that the ball is not playable in the water):

Answer: The fences, road and ditches on hole #2 make for a very unusual situation not found on many courses. Accordingly, we have a Local Rule to cover the situation where the player has interference. The best way to understand this is to consider the entire area, including the fences, as one large obstruction. Imagine that this is one wide cart path extending between and including the fences. If the ball lies in this area or if the fences interfere with the player’s stance or area of his swing, the player is entitled to relief without penalty.

Fall is among us and the golf course is entering its busiest period of the season between normal day-to-day play, outings and Club events. The Team and I will be doing our best to maintain these pristine conditions but there are a few things that we can do as a Club that will help maintain our beautiful asset. These three simple tasks will go a long way to sustaining good playing conditions.
Aggressively twist or li up.
With COVID last year we became accustom to not using a rake and not raking bunkers. Thankfully, a lot has changed since then and we are now back to raking bunkers behind ourselves. When raking, please be sure to try and leave the bunker the same way you entered it. Here’s a quote from the rules of golf from their etiquette section, “The overriding principle is that consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times.” This embodies why we rake bunkers behind our shot, so that the next person has just as good as the lie you had.

Repairing ball marks is something we should always do and, unfortunately, maintenance teams often spend a significant amount of time each year fixing unrepaired ball marks so that they don’t negatively affect ball roll. The proper way to fix a ball mark can be watched on the Princess Anne Country Club Facebook or Instagram. Here are some dos and don’ts for fixing your ball mark.

Charmagne is still stringing all the racquets with our top-of-theline Wilson Baiardo stringing machine. This is a state-of-the-art electric machine, known for its accuracy in producing precise tensions over and over again. The same machine is used to string the pros’ racquets at the US Open and is the reason we have people coming from everywhere to have us string their racquets!
One of our own young talents Grahame Brown has been tearing up the junior circuit, recently becoming one of the first PACC juniors to make it into the National Clay Court Junior 16’s Championships in Boca Raton, Florida! In more exciting news, four of our top juniors played in the inaugural PACC Summer Invitational Tournament. Two reached the semi-finals. Number two seed Joseph Hobbs teamed up with former tour doubles player Nathan Pasha and won two rounds to reach the semifinals before losing to third-seeded Conor Somers and Lester Cook. In the other semi-final, Charles Hobbs and current Virginia Tech standout Evan Fragistas, won two rounds before succumbing to the number one seeds in their semifinal. Ashton Legum and his partner, High School State Singles Champion Evan Pugh, won their first round in the semi-pro event before losing to Charles and Evan. Barrett Foster also competed in the event, partnering with Norfolk State’s Santiago Rendon, and they won their first round before also going out to Charles and Evan. What a great showing from our PACC Juniors!

On Friday, June 4th, we hosted a mixed social with a “swingers” theme where everybody got to play one round with their spouses before switching partners and played three rounds! Two were mixed and the other was gender doubles. The format was one set to six for each round. A huge thanks to all the participants for making it a great event and we look forward to the next one!
We already know how to stand in a proper ready position, but rarely do I see Club players have different ready positions for baseline versus net. The reason we should is that the grips are different for groundstrokes vs. volleys. so when you’re at the baseline you should be waiting in your forehand grip so that if you’re returning a serve with your forehand you won’t have to change grips. If it comes to your backhand you’ll have your non-dominant hand on the racquet also in order to change grips. When standing at the net, your ready position should be with your dominant hand in a continental volley grip which will be the same whether you are hitting a forehand or backhand volley. The only exception to this rule is if you’re at the baseline and plan to “chip” or slice your return, in which case you would use the same grip at the ready position as if you were at the net so continental. Our first Cup event in over a year featured our best male players in the 27th Annual Virginia Cup hosted by CCV in Richmond. Our team won one more match than they did last year, so while we were still in 4th place we are moving in the right direction against some pretty stiff competition from former ODU players that make up the majority of NYCC’s team and Westwood who also have several ex college players on their roster. In the end, PACC’s top team of Britt Visser and Rhys James spoiled CCV’s chance to make it a 3 way tie with NYCC and Westwood by beating their #1 team 10-8 in the 3rd set tie breaker! Here were the results: 1st – Westwood | 2nd – NYCC | 3rd – CCV | 4th – PACC

It turned out to be a perfect day out at NYCC for the 28th Annual Tidewater Cup Men’s Doubles competition with very little wind and a nice cool temperature for the players. Unfortunately, the tennis part did not go so well for Team PACC where we struggled right out of the gate to get wins. Out of the five morning matches we managed one win from Chris Poulos and Neil Richards. Then, out of the five afternoon matches we got another win from Chris Poulos and Neil Richards who both played superb as well as one from Sam Steingold and Brady McNaughton. With three wins total we fell behind Elizabeth Manor who finished third with four total points, Cavalier who finished second with six total and Norfolk Yacht who won with seven points. Team PACC has won this Cup 12 times in the last 25 years so we have no doubt we will get the Cup back soon! A huge thanks to all our guys for all their efforts and taking time out of their busy weekends to play for their club.

What an exciting weekend we had at Farmington Country Club in Richmond for the 59th Annual Anderson Cup ladies competition! We had a rocky start to the weekend with one of our best players and team captain, Bekki Jucksch, taking herself out of the singles lineup still recovering from shoulder surgery, but was willing to soldier on in doubles. We asked Megan Haynsworth and Dillon Yost, who are currently on our Spindle Cup team, to join the team which they graciously accepted even given the short notice, and then we bumped everyone up a spot. It turned out that Megan was our only singles win out of the six positions on Friday, but we hung in there and swept all three doubles positions! This put us in a second-place tie with Farmington with four points to CCV’s seven. On day two we managed to get four singles wins from Debby Levi, Amy Paschold, Toby Fanney and Linda Gayle. We solidified our 2nd place by getting two more wins in doubles from Annabelle Stiffler and Amy Paschold who were down 5-1 in the first set before winning six straight games to win it! Megan Hupp and Mariah Standing were the other winners, surviving a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win! PACC finished only four points behind the mighty CCV and took second place for the second year in a row! I couldn’t have been prouder of the way they fought for every point. Please give our gals a high five if you see them! Final score: 1st – CCV (14) | 2nd – PACC (10) | 3rd – FCC (6) | 4th – NYCC (6)

INSTRUCTIONS
A fall staple, roasted vegetables are wonderful as a side-dish or even as a snack eaten at room temperature. This is a versatile recipe – use whatever fall veggies you have on hand. I’ll sometimes add sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts or even beets to the mix – whatever I have on-hand!
• 1 pound peeled carrots, cut into 2 inch pieces
• 1 pound peeled parsnips, cut into 1 inch wide by 2 inch pieces
1. Preheat the oven to 425°. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
your veggies to be about the same size so they all cook evenly, with the exception of the parsnips and butternut squash, the squash cooks more quickly and the parsnips take the longest to cook.

Social Health
• Improve our heart health
Spending time in nature can boost your mood and improve mental health. It reduces stress and anxiety and can lead to a lower risk of depression, according to a study done by researchers at Stanford University. In addition, being outdoors opens up your senses to your surroundings and improves your sensory perception. Taking in the sights, smells and feelings of nature has so many health benefits, it can even be prescribed by a doctor.
Hiking is a fantastic, whole-body workout, and its immersive nature means it doesn’t often feel like work. Hiking can:
• Build stronger muscles and bones
Physical Exercise
• Improve your sense of balance
The sound of the wind rustling through the trees; the warm sunshine on your face; the soft earthy feel of the trail under your shoes…not only are these experiences enjoyable to have, but they’re good for you, too.

Hiking with a partner or in a group can improve the strength and health of your relationships. Because hiking ranges in difficulty from an extremely challenging climb to a casual way of spending time away from the pressures of life, it’s a great way to strengthen the friendships or bonds you have with your companions.
The Benefits of Hiking
Shenandoah Naonal Park & Blue Ridge Parkway | The opportunities are endless and so beautiful! From rocky climbs to scenic prairie strolls, you can find short and long trails to stunning mountain views, waterfalls and, if you’re lucky, even a bear sighting! Some of our favorite trails include:

First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach | Located in our backyard, First Landing offers beautiful water views, biking trails and hikes ranging from .4 to 4 miles long.
York River State Park, Williamsburg | A great day trip, York River State Park offers the best of both worlds… exploring along the beautiful shoreline and shaded trails inland among the trees.

Back Bay/False Cape - Sandbridge, Virginia Beach | The solitude of Back Bay/False Cape makes it feel like it’s a world away. As a wildlife refuge, no sunbathing is allowed on the beautiful, almost secluded beach. There are also several trails, including the two main trails (approx. 4.5 miles), that lead from Back Bay to the even more secluded False Cape.
Apple Orchard Falls: (BR/Jefferson National Forrest: Mountain streams and waterfall.)
Belle Isle, Richmond | Belle Isle is a preserved park island right in the middle of the James downtown. A suspension bridge spans the James River leading to the island and the large flat rocks that surround the island make for a great place to rest after hiking the trails.

I want to thank the Princess Anne Family for your patience and understanding during the construction of the new pool. I hope that you had time to enjoy it and that we met or exceeded your expectations. Since the pool was opened late in the season, we will make every effort to remain open from September through November on the weekends as the pool will be heated.
Though their record didn’t show it, the swimmers had a great season with many personal bests and team records. One of our swimming records was broken the summer by Liza Cutchins in the Girls 9/10 25-meter backstore with a time of 18.45 seconds. Please join me in congratulating our swimmers and coaches for all of their hard work and dedication this season.

By Brian Triolet, Aquatics Director
Thank you to our wonderful swimming coaches, Kristen Zielinski, Bryan Rudolph, Katie Lorenz, Emma Hewitt, Brynn Brazukas and Madison Kirkman for their flexibility and perseverance during this swimming season. Despite not having a pool to swim we were able to use the local recreation centers for practice. Our team sponsor donations allowed us to practice and we cannot thank them enough!
Hours of Operaon on Labor Day
In closing, I would like to thank all of the families that supported PACC Breakers this season; with special thanks to everyone who volunteered to help with meet set-up, scoring, judging and timing. I would also like to extend our gratitude to our team sponsors who gave generously to help maintain a highquality swimming program. Lastly, I would like to thank the Pool Committee for all of their support, advice and tireless efforts.

SWIMMING AWARDS
This award goes to the swimmer that shows enthusiasm, passion and commitment. The coaching staff looked closely for an enthusiastic swimmer that is excited by his/her own swimming and encourages others to be excited about their swimming. His/her commitment to “perfect” practice on a consistent basis will also weigh heavily on the decision. Finally, a passion to be the best they can be plus the positive effect they have on both the other swimmers and the coaches will also be considered.
