1 Princess Anne Living | Summer 2021

Message from the President

As always, I hope this message finds you and your family healthy and safe. We're sprinting through spring and can't wait for the start of summer with warmer weather, a green luscious golf course, fresh clay tennis courts and the new Aquatics Center opening soon. I can't wait for the grand opening, great music, food, libations and diving off the diving boards!

I can't thank the Membership enough for your continuing support of the PACC. From increased dining, record golf rounds, record tennis sets played, increased pickleball play, a full Fitness Center and classes, more and more youth activities and new and expanded weekly dinner specials from Chef Benson, there are a lot of great things happening at the Club. Please welcome all of our new Members, 52 families joined from October through April! This is a testament to you and our Team in providing a home away from home and a safe haven. Remember to please invite a prospective member for a round of golf, set of tennis or dinner in The Chesapeake. Please contact Courtney Whittemore so she can help you arrange any of these activities.

Please take a moment to thank our Team for keeping our wonderful Club running in such great shape. Our goal remains the same - to exceed your expectations every time you visit PACC.

With best wishes,

Up-to-Date from the General Manager

Virtually every day our Princess Anne Family inquires about the opening date of the new aquatics complex. As I scribe this in early April, I’m reticent to cite a specific date and typically respond that we are targeting to open by the fourth of July. We are working to make up the time lost through a rainy February and thank you for your patience and investment. Please rest assured that Mardy Colling will continue to provide frequent video progress updates as we approach opening.

As we look forward to this summer, this issue takes a look back in time and features a Princess Anne history page highlighting Charter Member Abner S. Pope. Special thanks to the Woodard and Burroughs families who, upon our request, kindly shared images and insights into their forebearer Mr. Pope with Tradition Committee Chair Dr. Andy Dickinson and Marketing and Communications Director Kristen Bunting.

Youth programming reaches its peak this time of year and our Youth Involvement Committee, Youth Programs Manager Taylor Nelson and Team continue to tweak summer programing for our Club's youth. Youngsters are taught sportsmanship, conditioning, etiquette, technique, scoring rules, teamwork, traditions of the games and so much more by our passionate, gifted professionals. While the emphasis is fun, in many instances written and physical skill testing, competition and achievement recognition are in place for youngsters to progress. This issue is packed with additions and enhancements to our flourishing programs.

While this 'Princess Anne Living' publication remains a core communication tool and brings to life the vibrant Princess Anne Family and happenings, our other communication outlets continue to expand. We enjoy over 1,600 followers on Facebook, 1,783 on Instagram, 474 on LinkedIn and our website consolidates all of our communications. If you are not receiving our weekly e-mails or utilizing the Princess Anne mobile app, I urge you to contact Kristen Bunting (757) 440-3111 or kbunting@princessannecc.com so that we may ensure you are fully connected and up-to-date with the freshest information.

Our Operations Team is always exploring avenues to better serve the Princess Anne Family and we garner so much through your valuable feedback and suggestions. As you have thoughts about any aspect of your Club please do not hesitate to contact me on my direct line, (757) 440-3100, or via e-mail at wshonk@princessannecc.com. I very much look forward to seeing you at the Princess Anne this summer!

Recap | Random Act of Kindness Day

Cupid was on the loose over Valentine’s Day weekend in February, spreading some love with sweet treats for our members to pick up at the pro shops, fitness center and front desk.

And not to be outdone, our very own leprechaun Chef Geoff was out on his merry Celtic golf cart passing out green beer over the St. Paddy’s Day weekend in March.

We love to celebrate “Random Acts of Kindness Day”...everyday!

This Summer | Marra Forni Brick Pizza Oven

Coming very soon, the pizza oven we have all been waiting for!

While planning for the opening of our new Aquatics Complex, the challenge of providing a convenient, timely and delicious menu was a concerning factor for Chef Benson and myself. We knew that we had to find a way to help the, severely undersized, Breakers kitchen. The often referred to as “the little engine that could” would serve the boulevard, Breakers and the newly expanded pool deck. I had previously researched a pizza oven as a great fit for Breakers and during pool demolition, we found the ideal space for it. Our chosen Marra Forni pizza oven is unique as it has its own self-contained insulation and an integral exhaust system that requires a much smaller footprint. We found a tiny area by the Breakers’ breezeway doors that was a perfect location. This is where the dream took off! Putting it all together has been a fun project and I’m looking forward to serving our first homemade pizza this June. My vision of a pick-up window that services the boulevard, Breakers and the pool deck is finally coming to fruition. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for that first specialty 'pie' to come out of our new oven this summer!

Cheers from the Food Dudette!

LET'S GO GREEN!

We aspire to make a positive impact on our community and make more environmentally mindful choices to protect our beautiful planet. We would love your support!

It doesn't need to be hard. Simple steps to reduce, reuse and recycle can add up. Using less paper is a great place to start. Did you know...

• Pulp and paper is the third-largest air, water and land polluter among all industries in the US.

• The U.S. cuts down approximately 68 million trees each year to produce paper products.

• On average Americans use 7 trees per person a year in paper, wood and other products made from trees.

We can make a difference! We are encouraging you to opt in for digital newsletters and emailed statements (versus printed/mailed). This will not only save your Club money, it will help save our world.

Help us go green by opting for email statements!

Summer SafetySafetySummer Safety Reminders

We are looking forward to our Members enjoying Princess Anne during our summer season! In preparation for this busy time, we offer the following reminders and strongly encourage our parents to emphasize them while supervising children on property.

Security / Non-Member Trespassing / Firearms

• While signs are posted and much of the property is camera monitored, accessibility from multiple public streets makes us susceptible to non-member activity, particularly over the summer season. Members are urged to avoid leaving valuables in vehicles (particularly visible) and may not bring firearms on to Club property. Operations Team protocol calls for us to notify the main Clubhouse front desk immediately whenever we suspect a non-member is on property and we request Club Members do the same.

Clubhouse / Locker Rooms / Lounges

• Gentlemen are asked to remove their hats upon entering the Clubhouse. While ladies and gentlemen may change in/out of their swim wear in the locker rooms, bathing suits are not permitted in the Clubhouse.

• Juniors (under age 18) are not permitted in the ladies and men’s locker rooms and lounges unless accompanied by an adult. Ladies and gentlemen are encouraged to lock their lockers.

Pool / Poolside Locker Rooms

• Swimmers below age nine (including swim team Members) must be under the supervision of a Member, a Member’s child or a caretaker who is age 12 or older. Divers below age nine must be accompanied and supervised by an adult (age 18 or over) present in the diving area.

• Our Aquatics and Breakers Teams are focused on elevating our maintenance while vigilantly monitoring the busy locker rooms throughout the summer. We thank parents in advance for your monitoring support. Please do not hesitate to alert Aquatics Director Brian Triolet or Breakers Manager Monica Au immediately with any concerns.

Fitness / Sport Court

• Children under the age of 14 may use the fitness center if they are accompanied by, and under the supervision of, a personal trainer approved by the Fitness Committee or parent. Children 14-16 years of age who have completed a one-hour orientation with the Fitness & Wellness Director may use the fitness facility without parental supervision, during staff-supervised hours.

• All Members are required to sign in at the fitness center desk prior to utilizing the center and the sport court. Please adhere to the rules posted outside of the court and requests by our Team.

Parking / Bicycle Safety

• Parking in the Club lots is for Members and their guests only. If you witness non-members utilizing the parking facilities, please inform our Front Desk Team.

• Skateboarding is not permitted on Club property.

• Cyclists are encouraged to exercise great caution as they enter the Club property. Specifically, we ask that bikes are walked on the sidewalk along the lower, south side Club entrance, Breaker’s Boulevard and Breaker’s dining area. Bikes should be parked and locked on the bike racks on the east side of the pool, or by the sport court.

PACC History | Charter MembersHistory

PACC 1916: “The undersigned, each for himself and not for the other, subscribe for membership in the PRINCESS ANNE COUNTRY CLUB, ………, and hereby respectively agree to pay the sum of fifty ($50) dollars each….”.

92 gentlemen joined and thus, the Club we so treasure today, came into being. The surnames of our current Members allow us to identify their descendants. However, there must be others related to these pioneers, willing to share a little history with us! If so, please contact Dr. Andy Dickinson via email at wadjrmd2@gmail.com

Princess Anne Founding Father Abner S. Pope

Abner S. Pope, the grandfather of the Jimmy Woodard and Richard Burroughs families, was employed at Seaboard Bank in Norfolk when, at the age of 33, he signed on as an original member.

Abner was born in 1883 in the village of Newsom located in rural Southampton County, Virginia (current population 282). After completing his education at the University of Richmond and Cornell University, Abner made his way to Norfolk and employment at Seaboard Bank (founded in 1867, now part of Truist Bank). Abner became president and, along the way, married and had three daughters.

The Pope family had a summer cottage on 74th street and it was a popular gathering place for young folks, particularly with his three attractive daughters in residence. Those daughters married a Woodard, a Burroughs and a North Carolina furniture manufacturing owner by the name of Shuford.

Though a charter member of a golf club, it was not his game but rather that of being an equestrian and he enjoyed the horsey set in and around the PACC and Cavalier in the mid 1900s.

The many current PACC relatives recall grandparents Abner and Nancy with many fond memories at the cottage on 74th street (where great-grandson Pope and wife Karen now live). Father Time was kind to Abner, allowing him to enjoy his family until the ripe old age of 91 in 1978.

Thank you, Abner S. Pope!

Mr. Abner Pope with his wife, Nancy. Mr. Pope with Senator Harry F. Byrd. Mr. Pope, as President of Seaboard National Bank (SunTrust). Abner Pope, on horseback in the mid-1900s. Mrs. Nancy Pope as she is meeting her granddaughter Libby Woodard in July, 1988.

The Golden Rules

The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.

Rules Rumors

Dear Rules Guru: The golf season is upon us and everyone is still talking about the New Rules of Golf that went into effect in 2019. I need a review on some of these, please. I know these rules can help me if I understand them.

EMBEDDED BALL

Rumor: I heard that you can now take relief from an embedded ball anywhere in the “General Area” except for the sand; and that “General Area” is a new term for “Through the Green."

If a ball is embedded in its own pitch-mark anywhere in the general area, relief is allowed with a couple of exceptions, which rarely occur. No relief is allowed if a ball is embedded in any other part of the course, including the putting green. On the putting green, the player may mark and lift the ball, repair the damage caused by the ball’s impact and replace the ball.

The relief procedure for an embedded ball is as follows: the original ball or another ball must be dropped in this relief area: the spot right behind where the ball is embedded is the reference point and the size of the area is one club length; the relief area must be in the general area and cannot be closer to the hole.

3. If the ball is in the rough and the one club length relief takes you to the fairway, is that allowed?

1. What parts of the course are included in the “General Area"? Does this include sandy areas that are not bunkers?

There are five areas of the golf course:

1. The teeing area of the hole being played;

2. All penalty areas;

3. All bunkers;

4. The putting green of the hole being played;

5. “The General Area” (formerly called “through the green”) includes everything else on the course, except numbers 1-4 as listed above. Sandy areas that are not bunkers are included in “the general area” but relief is not available for a ball that is embedded in a sandy area.

2. What is the procedure for taking relief from an embedded ball? What if it is on the putting green?

Yes. The rough is included in the general area. The same applies when taking relief from sprinkler heads, drains, GUR, etc.

4. What is different now from the previous rule? The main difference is the relief area. Previously, the player had to drop the ball “as close as possible” to the spot where the ball was embedded; there was no “relief area.” Additionally, the player may now substitute another ball when taking relief, whereas previously the original ball had to be dropped.

OUT OF BOUNDS

Rumor: If your ball goes out of bounds or is lost, you do not have to go back to the tee to replay it. You can now drop a ball in the fairway for a penalty of two strokes and play the next shot from there. Sounds like a winner! Will we be able to do this at the PACC?

What you are referring to is a new Local Rule. The Club must choose to adopt this in order for the players to use it. You will probably never see this used at higher levels of competition.

Here is how this works. Only if the player has not played a provisional ball and finds that the ball is either out of bounds or cannot find the ball, the player may choose to use the Local Rule rather than playing under stroke and distance. The option allows the player to drop in a large area between the point where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds and two club lengths from the edge of the fairway of the hole being played that is not closer to the hole. The player gets two penalty strokes when using this option. See the diagram. PACC has adopted this Local Rule.

YELLOW AND RED STAKES

Rumor: We refer to all hazards as penalty areas now. Is it true the penalty areas do not have to be associated with water? Will there still be a need to have both yellow and red stakes on the course? What options do areas defined as red penalty areas have that yellow areas do not have?

In the past, hazards included bunkers and water hazards. The term “hazard” has been eliminated from the new Rules. We now have "bunkers” and “penalty areas." Penalty areas no longer have to be associated with water. Penalty areas will still be marked as we have always marked water hazards in the past. The relief options are very nearly the same with a couple of exceptions.

First, there are three options for a ball in a yellow penalty area: 1. stroke and distance; 2. back-on-the line relief; 3. play the ball as it lies. Red penalty areas have these three options plus the additional option of dropping in a two club length relief area using the spot where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area as the reference point. Two changes of note for penalty area relief: 1. when dropping back-on-the line, the player must now pick a reference point anywhere on the line and drop within one club length, no closer to the hole – previously the ball was to be dropped as close as possible to the line itself; 2. the opposite margin option for a ball in a red penalty area has been eliminated, unless a Local Rule permits this.

PROCEDURE FOR TAKING BACK-ON-THE-LINE RELIEF:

Rumor: There is a new procedure for taking back-on-the-line relief, dropping on a specific “relief area.” My friend Chip said to take the following steps:

1. Estimate a spot where the ball last crossed the penalty area.

2. Imagine an imaginary line that extends from the hole through the estimated spot and behind the penalty area.

3. Go back as far on that imaginary line as you wish.

4. Choose a spot on that imaginary line. From that spot, measure a club length on either side of the line and behind the spot. That defines the relief area in which to drop.

5. Chip reminds me when I drop that I must drop from knee height and I must use the longest club in my bag that is not a putter to measure. Is my friend correct in the steps to take?

Your friend is completely correct.

Is back-on-the-line relief for both yellow and red penalty area?

Yes.

CourseGolf Course and Grounds Update

A Warm Welcome to Princess Anne Country Club

As I begin what I plan to be a long career here at Princess Anne Country Club, there are a few things that jumped out to me in my first week here. First, everyone has made me feel like family. Matt Boyce and the Team at the golf course maintenance building have welcomed me with open arms. I have, without a doubt, started on the right foot by Matt sharing all of his experiences with me as he wants what is in the best interest of the Club, the Membership and me. That feeling goes beyond just my Team and Matt. I have been able to meet a large portion of the PACC Team, as well as a few Members. I have only felt a nice, warm welcome, and I thank everyone involved that has made the transition possible.

Something else that has resonated with me is how special this place is. I came to Princess Anne from three sacred golf clubs- Augusta National, Secession and Eagle Point- but they don’t compare. The community here is a close group that truly wants what is best for the Club. Mr. Shonk said to me during my interview, “This Club has been here for one hundred years and we will do our part to make sure it is still around in another one hundred years”. I will never forget that, and it helped me understand the importance of this Club to the community. The last thing that I found special immediately is the golf course itself; it is truly a gem. Tim Liddy and Matt Boyce did a wonderful job on the rebuild, not a design feature was left untouched. I have not had the chance to play yet, but as I walk the golf course, I have been imagining my shots. It seems like almost every shot you must consider the consequences of a bad shot.

When I first stepped foot on property that second week in February, I remember thinking to myself how much the greens complexes reminded me of Augusta National. I later found out that there was a mantra that this is the little Augusta. I can speak from experience after being on that property for over four years, this place does have the Augusta vibe.

Over the next few months I plan on continuing to observe my team and our current processes so that I can learn the Princess Anne way and the successes of Matt Boyce while incorporating the knowledge I have gathered from being a part of some of the top clubs in the country. I plan on implementing those ideas with the goal of improving every day. My family and I feel blessed beyond measure to be here and are grateful to be part of the Princess Anne Country Club Family. I am excited about this journey and the role I will play in the future of Princess Anne.

Fighting through the tough conditions was our defending champion Cecil Cutchins. He played strong on the difficult greens and finished at two under par net, "68." This score would prove hard to beat for the rest of the field. As the final group posted their scores, our defending champion held on to his title for another year! TENNIS TALK

Pro Shop News

At this time last year we found ourselves in the middle of a global tennis boom not seen since the 70’s and we are already off the charts with our participation this year. It’s crazy to think that a pandemic could be responsible for pushing tennis to the forefront of safe activities and cause people to embrace our sport in untold numbers. Here at home, our summer camp numbers are through the roof, as is participation in events, lessons and clinics. We have a ton of new players who have been Members for a while, as well as new members taking up the game.

The biggest challenge we’ve faced navigating the last twelve months has been getting product into the shop. Our vendors are dealing with unprecedented demand that their factories haven’t been able to keep up with. For that reason, most of our new racquets, shoes and merchandise have been on back order. Some things have started to trickle in, but nowhere near the efficiency we’re used to. We do apologize for the inconvenience, but promise to get up to speed very soon.

Nathan's Tip of the Month - Beat the Ball to the Bounce for Improved Footwork and Better Ball Striking!

In tennis, proper movement and footwork is critical for optimal performance. It all starts with anticipation and understanding that our particular shot selection results in an often predictable and reliable outcome from our opponent. We can therefore anticipate where our opponent is hitting the ball and get a jump on the next shot.

Even with great anticipation, many players suffer from poor movement. This is simply because they’re too cautious. They prep the racquet early and focus on getting balanced and then erase all of their preemptive measures as they frantically race to the ball because they are late of the mark.

We want to reverse this process and “beat the ball to the bounce!” We want to be quick off the mark and get to the predicted trajectory of the ball early. While moving we initiate the unit-turn in order to have the backswing ready for the incoming ball. Once we are nearly behind the ball we can take small adjustment steps in order to get balanced and execute the proper shot.

By beating the ball to the bounce you give yourself time for adjustments and proper shot selection. Additionally by improving footwork you will find that it improves several other areas of your ball striking as well including,

• Minimizing unforced errors.

• Playing with more power

• Improving ball control and accuracy

• Helping prevent injuries

Next time you’re on the court, focus on beating the ball to the bounce and you will find with the extra time you’re executing powerful, accurate shots more consistently.

The Many Benefits of Water

Fitness

“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.”

Your body is composed of 60% water, meaning that the clear, calorie-free liquid plays a role in just about every bodily function. Water regulates body temperature, keeps joints lubricated, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to cells and keeps organs functioning properly. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. "Fluid losses occur continuously from skin evaporation, breathing, urine and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health," Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Steven Guest, MD says.

On top of all this, evidence supports a water-weight loss connection. The more hydrated you are, research suggests, the more efficiently your body works at tasks that range from thinking to burning body fat. Drinking two cups of water before a meal will keep you hydrated, fuller and may even boost your metabolism for an hour. And all you need to do is turn on your tap. Talk about convenience!

While countless factors, behaviors and predispositions can affect your body weight, if your goal is long-term, moderate weight loss, making sure you're hydrated could be a good place to begin. Before you go off to your favorite vitamin shop to try the latest weight-loss supplement, try drinking two cups (500 mL) before you sit down for a meal.

How much water should you drink?

You've probably heard the common "eight 8-ounce glasses per day" rule, but the reality is, the amount of water needed varies greatly depending on age, gender, health, physical activity, tendency to sweat and more.

The average American adult drinks nearly five cups of water a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The general recommendation from the NASEM is approximately 91 ounces (about 11 cups) of water each day for women and approximately 125 ounces (about 15 and a half cups) for men. About 80% of the recommended fluid intake comes from drinking water and beverages, while the other 20% comes from water-rich foods.

One way to determine whether you're drinking enough water is to peek in the pot after you pee. "It's best to go by the color of your urine," Jampolis says. "If it's dark yellow, you aren't drinking enough. Aim for light yellow."

Fitness Team Water Hacks:

Crissy | The Hidrate Bottle measures how much you drink each day and syncs to your phone!

Sabine | Suck on ice chips throughout the day to keep you cool and hydrated!

Val | I always carry ice water in a Yeti, and refill it throughout the day. I never leave home without it!

Mallory | I’m loving my new OMORC 32 oz water bottle that I can infuse with fruit or veggies. My daily goal is to drink at least three refills/day.

Cindy | I like adding cucumber, berries, or really any fruit and pretend I’m at a spa.

Larissa | I like to drink a cup of hot water whenever I remember, usually three cups during a day, in addition to coffee and tea. I always start my day with a cup of hot water with lemon and 1/3 teaspoon of honey.

Colleen | I add a pinch of Himalayan salt to my water 1-2 times a day to add back minerals lost from filtered water. Also, this helps the body retain water to better hydrate it.

Andrea | In addition to providing hydration, eating water-rich foods provide low-calorie nutrients and fiber to keep you satisfied. Here’s list of water (and nutrient-rich) foods:

1. Cucumber (96% water)

Lettuce (95% water)

Celery (95% water)

Tomatoes (95% water)

Zucchini (93% water)

Watermelon (92% water)

Strawberries (91% water)

Broccoli (91% water)

Cantaloupe (90% water)

Peaches (89% water)

Watermelon Slushes

Watermelon Slushes

Watermelon is a wonderfully hydrating snack that is packed with one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants found in nature, perfect on hot summer days when you are feeling a bit wilted.

Freeze leftover watermelon to make even more refreshing Watermelon Slushes. Simply combine frozen watermelon with cranberry or pomegranate juice, fresh lemon zest and chia seeds. Throw in some Acai powder for a superfood boost or a little mint if you have it on hand. Summer in a glass!

From the Deep End

Hello Summer!

Aquatics

It is never too soon to plan for pool season and summer is just around the corner! I hope all of you have been watching the progress of the pool construction, we are so excited about the new facility coming to the Princess Anne. The pool will feature a large, zero entry with fountains and splash areas, a larger deep end with two one-meter competition diving boards, a large sun shelf and a jetted seating area. We will also have a large deck which will include a cabana bar and adult area as well as several pergolas to enjoy the summer breeze under some shade!

Due to the pool construction, the dates and times the pool will be open to Members and guests will be determined at a later date than this publication. For those of you with children between the ages of 5 and 18 we will be swimming with the Virginia Beach Swim League this summer! Please consider allowing your child to be a member of the swimming and diving team. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to become a stronger swimmer and diver, learn competitive skills, build friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. PACC will continue to be in the Marlin division for the 2021 summer swim season.

This year we will be working with Swimoutlet.com to provide swim suits and related gear in our own online team store. All swim suits are custom and cannot be returned once purchased so please be sure that you are ordering the correct suit and sizes. We will have several suit sizes available for your swimmer to try on prior to purchase. All suits and swim needs can be purchased using the website linked to the below QR code.

To visit the website using your cell phone/mobile device:

1. Open up the camera app.

2. Position your phone so the QR code appears in the digital viewfinder.

3. Launch the code.

Registration for Swim/Dive Teams will be through the PACC phone app or online. Using the app will allow Members to register for swim and dive meets, lessons, swim clinics, and other swimming and diving related activities at the pool. We hope that you have had an excellent winter along with a terrific spring. We look forward to seeing you in the summer! If you have any questions concerning the pool, its programs or schedule, please leave your questions with our front desk or email me at btriolet@ princessannecc.com and I will address them as soon as possible!
