We are delighted to welcome our 51st President of the Princess Anne Country Club Susan Tyler Pender. Susan’s history at the Club dates back to her days as a youngster on the swim and dive team. She fondly remembers running through the old clubhouse and hanging out at the grill. Not only is Susan the Club’s first female president, but also the Club’s first third generation president. Her great grandfather, David Pender, Sr., served as President, as well as her father, David “Dippy” Pender, III. Her grandfather also served as Club Treasurer. You can say she was destined to serve the PACC. And served she has. Susan has spent more than 14 years giving back to the Club serving as a Board Director and Chair of both the House and Membership ID Committees. We are delighted to welcome President Pender as she leads our Club.

Dear Princess Anne Family,

I am so excited to serve as your Club President and look forward to working with our Members and Team to continue elevating PACC to exceed expectations and remain your special 'home away from home.’

I offer a huge congratulations to our outgoing president Chris Fanney. Thank you for your precious time serving our Club and the amazing leadership you provided through such uncertain times. We have a beautiful, new Aquatics Center to enjoy thanks to the unwavering dedication of you and our Building Committee in seeing the project through during the trials and tribulations of construction during the pandemic.

Susan T. Pender

As I scribe this, the Strategic Planning Committee is thoughtfully working with the Board of Directors to restructure your Club’s membership cap. Golf Committee Chairman Roger Stroud recently wrote to you about actions being taken to ideally alleviate tee time challenges, and President Pender will update you soon regarding membership cap actions and more. As these devoted leaders strategically deliberate the future of The Princess Anne they are evaluating considerable data and trends. The Executive Committee recently attended a presentation by Club Management Association of America President & CEO Jeff Morgan that highlighted five megatrends that are impacting private clubs today and shaping society for many years to come. The trends were 1. Demographics (Millennials & Gen Z are the future and the now!), 2. Wellness (Wellness will continue to have a huge impact, how are you integrating it?) 3. Golf, Outdoors & Entertainment (Golf is having a new growth period with entertainment at its root.), 4. Workforce Realignment (We are experiencing the great workforce re-alignment. Are you evolving your workforce models?); and 5. VUCA Success (Volatility/Uncertainty/Complexity/Ambiguity) (Success lies in governance focus, operational excellence and mindset. Do you have a survive or thrive mindset?).

Page seventeen inside this Princess Anne Living recognizes our 2021 Operations Team Awards for Excellence Winners. My heart swells with a very deep pride to call each of these ladies and gentlemen teammates. Our Team gathered recently to honor these amazing devoted leaders and I invite you to pass on your congratulations when you see any of these winners. I very much look forward to seeing you at The Princess Anne in 2022!

William S. Shonk, CCM, CCE General Manager

Up-to-Date from the General Manager

Princess Anne Living | January/February 2022 2

I am pleased to announce our incoming Vice President John Wilson, Secretary Dave Burton and four Directors who recently began their three-year terms; John Hawa (Green Committee Chair), Nicole Legum, Amy Metzger (Entertainment Chair) and Sam Steingold (Membership Chair).

Happy New Year! Hmm, what will this year bring? Our Team and Board focuses on goals, strategic initiatives and various trends and forecasts each January, but certainly did not forecast the past two years. Who would have thought that a pandemic would totally revitalize our truly unique world of private clubdom? A few years ago most clubs were struggling to attract Members and golf and tennis play was flat or declining. Wow, have times changed!

Susan with her father David 'Dippy' Pender, III.

It's an exciting time for PACC! In the coming months, look forward to enjoying our new Marra Forni pizza oven at Breakers and information on our golf simulator project. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Message from the President

Thank you to our outgoing Directors Bekki Jucksch, John Mazach, Joshua Parnell and Monica Stein for your valuable contributions to our Club, and our outgoing Club Secretary Les Watson for his 17 years of service. Mr. Watson served as a critical leader and counsel of the Princess Anne, while consistently honoring her traditions and heritage. We can't thank him enough for his selfless dedication.

Jason, Madison, Banks & New Baby Cook

Both Tallahassee, Florida natives and Florida State University graduates, Jason and Madison didn’t meet until living in New York City. However, like they say, timing is everything and this was certainly the case for them. After getting married, the Cooks moved to Marseille, France for Jason’s job where they fully immersed themselves in all aspects of French culture (especially the wine and cheese), traveled and brought their love of hosting dinner parties to their French friends as much as possible. C’est la vie! Upon returning to the states, Jason’s company brought them to Virginia Beach and they love it. Although they have no immediate ties to the area, both Madison’s grandfathers are UVA alumni and one was born and raised in Charlottesville and spent his summers through college working as a lifeguard in Virginia Beach. After experiencing everything VA Beach has to offer, they recently bought a house and decided this is where they are going to put down roots. The couple welcomed their first son, Banks, in June of 2020 and are expecting their second son in October. The Cooks enjoy cooking, eating, spending time with friends, boating and being active. Madison and Jason look forward to raising their family among the PACC community, being involved in a wide range of activities and building lifelong friendships.

While Dan played golf in college, Lauren hopes to improve upon her golf game as she loves the sport! Dan is also a former tennis player, and Lauren is looking forward to learning more about tennis as she takes her first lessons. They both also have a strong passion for social gatherings and good wine. Lauren is a part of a few wine clubs from her time living in Santa Barbara, CA! William, Patsy, Liam & Shepherd Martin

True Virginia Beach natives, Will and Patsy grew up in Bay Colony, where they met as teenagers, and are now raising their boys, Liam (4) and Shepherd (2), on their favorite stomping grounds. They were married at the PACC in 2013. Will is an MBA candidate at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and oversees investor relations at Vantage Consulting Group. Patsy works with Student Ministries at Galilee Church. You will definitely find the Martins at the PACC pool in the summer, likely making a big splash off the diving board. Liam has participated in the PACC’s Birdie Basics program and looks forward to continuing to “give the grass a haircut.”

The Metzgers moved down from The Fan in Richmond six years ago to be closer to relatives, start a family and design and develop homes at the Cavalier Residences. Their world has revolved around the Cavalier since then- they walk their boys, Eli (5) and Caleb (3) from their house on Cavalier Drive to school at Galilee Montessori every day, then head to one of the estate homes they have under construction in the Gaslight District. When they aren't on a construction site, they are usually in their backyard, gardening, digging in the sandbox, making improvements to our 90-year-old house and generally getting dirty- especially Jennifer. She is the gardener and baker, while Jared is the family chef. When not in the kitchen, he can be found running on the boardwalk, but he's looking forward to getting back into tennis and pursuing an expanding interest in golf.

Jennifer is a terrible tennis player and has no desire to play golf, but has happily enjoyed a cocktail at many clubhouses, the Ocean Course on Kiawah being her favorite. Jennifer has spent years living in cities (Boston, Pittsburgh, Richmond and Florence, Italy to name a few) and daydreams of traveling with more frequency as the kids get older. The boys love playing with trains, trucks, Legos, digging in the sand, art projects, baking with mom and making crazy contraptions with dad. They all enjoy spending long weekends at their family's mountain retreat just a few miles southwest of Wintergreen. It's a bit primitive, with a wood burning stove being the only heat source, but they aspire to design and build something new on the mountaintop one day.

Communication methods have rapidly evolved in recent times. Personal computers, smartphones, tablets and social media dominate our daily lives and access to real-time news and information has become the norm. Yet, the private club industry has been one of the slowest to adapt and embrace these trends. PACC recognizes the importance of this communication shift and has been working to meet the expectations of our membership through our Club's mobile app, website, video updates and social media. So when the pandemic started, we were more than prepared to pivot from traditional communications and focus on our digital platforms.

13 Princess Anne Living | January/February 2022

As we move forward into the new year, we will continue to keep you up-to-date with the latest information and Club activities utilizing these digital platforms. However, we are also improving our Princess Anne Living newsletter!

Winter Course & Property Projects

Frost Holds

The added play over the last two years has put a lot of stress on just about all of our tees. This has created a few thin tees for us: #3, #9 and #15. This can be contributed to lack of sun, poor drainage and other environmental factors. We will look to alleviate these issues by leveling, adding drainage and regressing. Moving forward, we will have a fertilization program that promotes long-term health. The construction process may look a little like what you see at left, but in due time these tees will be better than ever.

Princess Anne Living | January/February 2022 22

Winter is a time for us to keep improving the property. Play is at its lowest point, the grass has slowed down and the days are short. This allows us to focus on projects that will make a long-term impact to the property and our Members' experience. Along with improving the golf course, there are other important actions taking place on property. Here is what we have to look forward to this winter, what we will be doing out there and also some seasonal changes that may have affected you already this year.

Tee Projects

We look forward to seeing everyone this winter! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jspitler@princessannecc.com

This is when the temperature reaches a point where the moisture content in the plant is cold enough to freeze. When damage takes place, the plants' interior cells burst, killing the plant. That is why we ask that when we are on a frost hold you try and stay off of the turfgrass until it has time to thaw. Here is photo of damaged caused by geese which shows how little weight needs to be applied before damage is caused.

This is an essential part of our success. Without good drainage we will fail to have championship level conditioning. Drainage is something we work on yearly and are always trying to find areas to improve the course by adding drainage. Our first priority will be the left side of #6 fairway. After that, we have a long list of other areas we will work on as time permits.

4. On #3, if your ball lands on the sand cart path

m a. You get relief from the cart path following Rule 16.1

7. If you accidently hit a ball anywhere on the course while taking a practice swing, is it a penalty?

m a. If it was an unintentional hit, it is never a penalty. The ball must be replaced to its original spot m b. It is a penalty unless it occurs on the tee or the putting green and the ball must be replaced.

m a. Back on the fairway side.

Answers

2.A.TheballLASTcrossedtheredlineonthefairwaysideofthepenaltyarea.

Answer: If it was accidental (the opponent mistakenly thought it was his ball), there is no penalty; either player may replace the ball. If the opponent received permission, there is no penalty. However, if the opponent knew it was the other player’s ball and lifted it without permission, he incurs a one-stroke penalty. In stroke play there is no penalty in any of these circumstances.

Junior Golf Year in Review

Babs Neff

The Princess Anne Junior Golf Program continues to be a popular place for many of our children at the Club. Our golf professionals offer a wide array of options for junior golfers of ages and skill levels. Mama Birdie continued to expose our 4–5-year-old junior golfers to the game through fun games and stories. Opportunities in this program included learning safety and the basic FUNdamentals of golf. We averaged 24 of our youngest golfers each week for Birdie Basics, proving its popularity. Our operation 36 Academy helped our 6–12-year-old golfers develop their skills through weekly clinics. Upon completion of this course, participants can showcase their skills in an OP36 nine-hole challenge where the goal is to shoot 36 or better from 25 yards. The Virginia Beach Junior League also proved successful in 2021. The PACC fielded two teams, finishing second and third respectively. Junior League provides junior golfers the opportunity to participate in golf as a team sport. With the continued guidance and support from our amazing golf professionals, The Princess Anne Junior Golf Academy will continue to provide the platform for junior golfers to achieve their goals for years to come. We’d like to recognize Fin Worral who was the recipient of the 2021 Beck-Paolini, Junior Golfer of the Year, as well as our W. Peyton May Junior Club Champion Carson Poulos. Junior Golfer Miller Carr became the second junior golfer since Will Clark in 2014 to win the 2021 Richard D. Cooke Men’s Club Championship. Congrats to all our junior golfers for a wonderful 2021!

We are incredibly grateful to PALG Chair Jeanne Beck for her unwavering leadership in these trying times. She has guided us to an incredibly strong place as an association. We anticipate fantastic opportunities for the PALG to continue thriving in 2022!

Princess Anne Senior Men’s Golf Association continues to provide an opportunity each week for our more experienced golfers to play and grow friendships through the game. We averaged 40 players each Wednesday and grew our base of players from 94 in 2020 to 103 different individuals this season. We continue to seek as many opportunities to play this wonderful game as we can and did so this past year through new formats, camaraderie and fun. Our 2021 Senior Cup Champion and PASMGA Player of the Year was Jim Kyukendal. Jim was one of the most frequent players this past season and the strong play of his teammates helped him win the season points title. The association’s success is attributed to the hard work and dedication of our 2021 board and officers: President Lee Entsminger, Vice President David Durham, Secretary Jim Allen, and Treasurer Jim Gregory iner. Our officers included Steve Houfek, Hill Ellett, and Jim Wolcott. Any male golfers 60 & older that are interested in joining the PASMGA for the 2022 season can contact the golf shop for more details. Thank you to all our Members for their continued participation and we look forward to another successful year in 2022.

Joyce has been involved in tennis for 17 years, starting when she was a young girl playing for Hampton Roads Academy where she was First Team Conference in singles and doubles, as well as awarded VIS D-II and Peninsula Sports Club Player of the Year. After high school, she attended Eckerd College, a Division II school, where she received the women’s Tennis MVP Award both years she was there before transferring to Norfolk State University. She played Division I tennis at Norfolk State University for two years before graduating and receiving the Women’s Tennis Highest GPA award both years there.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and look forward to seeing you all back on the courts. We are excited about the New Year, with all the new Member tennis families taking to the courts and getting involved, having new gear on offer in the pro shop such as Lacoste and Fila, and getting ready for Cup season. We will have a lot more fun things for you to participate in this year so please refer to our calendar for 2022 so you don’t miss out!

If you haven’t already make sure you schedule a lesson with our new pro, Joyce Fields, who spent the better part of November getting to know everyone by pulling some hours behind the desk. Please see Joyce’s bio below. welcome Princess Anne Living | January/February 2022 30

When you play tennis here on your own time you know you only have 90 minutes to play, so you tend to be frugal with your warm up time so not to take away from your play time. Tournament matches are no different. If you go over your 90 minute time frame that we allocate for each match, you are causing a delay for the people that are there ready for their match time. We all know matches aren’t necessarily finite but, it’s the excessive warm ups that are causing delays. Going forward we are going to have all tournament matches stick to a strict warm up time of 15 minutes. This will go a long way in keeping us on schedule. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Member/Member Mixed Doubles Club Championship

Thank you again to everyone who came out to enjoy one of our favorite traditions, the annual Thanksgiving Day Cardio! As always, it was very well attended with 40 adults and 14 juniors. Those who support it enjoy coming out to get their workout in before the family feast! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Having a great pair of dedicated court shoes can help, but they'll only take you so far. You've got to know where to be on the court and when to be there in order to improve your footwork. Shoes alone won't improve your reaction time, but drills will.

instruction matchpracticeplay

Want to play like the pros? If you want to play like Serena or Roger, you've got to practice like them. Maximizing improvement is a 3 pronged process: Instruction, practice, matchplay. Many of you play regular practice matches but how many of you actually get practice reps on a backboard, ball machine or hitting partner? If you've played the game for any length of time you know that having confidence in your game comes from having reliable shots and having reliable shots comes from good technique and practice. Once you decide to practice I would recommend showing up with a detailed practice plan. If you're ready to practice and more importantly play like a pro, these tennis tips will get you on the right track.

Think of it this way: You have a few shots in your repertoire that you know you can always count on, shots that you like to hit. Build your play pattern around those. This is a tip that has been utilized by tennis coaches for a long long time. Whether you're a high school beginner or a seasoned professional, the goal is the same. Play to your strengths. Instead of trying to confuse your opponent with shots you're not as good at (hint: it's not going to work), instead focus on playing to your strongest shots. You'll end up with a far more consistent match.

It sounds simple but so many tennis fans, particularly recreational players (weekend warriors) do it time and time again. Like anything in life, if you want to get better at it, you've got to spend time on it. Tennis is no different, and time working on a practice plan is time well spent.

TIP

John's Tip of the Month | Practical Tennis Tips For Instant Improvement

Tennis Tip #3 - Focus on Your Footwork

Can a good pair of court shoes improve footwork? It doesn't matter how hard you can hit a ball- if you can't get to the ball fast enough and get your feet properly set- you'll never be able to take a proper swing. Before you can hit that favorite shot we talked about in tennis tip #2, you've got to be able get in position.

Tennis Tip #2 - Stick to a Single Pattern of Play

Princess Anne Living | January/February 2022 32

Tennis Tip #1 - Show Up to Practice With a Plan

Another mistake many of us make is trying to get creative every time they step on the court. Of the three tennis tips I've laid out here for you, this one was by the far the hardest for me to actually implement. I would always drift from my pattern of play on the fly, mid match and try something different. Now as coach, I see us overreacting to an opponent’s good shot before we’ve had a chance to see if they can do it consistently. Instead we should be sticking to the plan and a single style of play that emphasizes our strengths.

In fact, the number one cause of missed shots in tennis is when a player is out of position. This is where footwork can really save you. Having exceptional footwork can get you in position to hit your best stroke and take your game to the next level.

From the Courts

What's the first step in how to play tennis better? Well, it's rather basic. You've got to show up to practice with a plan. In my opinion, this is one of the most over looked tennis tips around. Don't just show up to the courts with your gear and wing it. You've got to have a plan in place before you enter the court and cross the baseline.

Make planning & prepping part of your daily and weekly habits. Pack your workout bag, lay out your clothes, set aside time on the weekend to plan and prep some of your meals. The fewer obstacles between you and your goals the better. Additionally, these actions will get you in the mindset to take action.

Pick a hard "deadline" for whatever goal or goals you want to meet. The "deadline" could be a special event you will be attending, like a wedding, reunion, or birthday celebration or an event you choose to participate in, like a race, walk or hike. Having a specific date to meet your overall goal will help keep you consistent with your success.
