Caroline is a proud fourth generation Member of the Princess Anne Country Club. She grew up at the North End on 49th Street, the same street on which her father was born and raised. She attended Cape Henry Collegiate and then pursued a degree in nutrition and dietetics from East Carolina University. She currently works at Norfolk Southern in the human resources department. She enjoys the beach, traveling and being surrounded by friends and family. The Princess Anne has always been a second home to her and holds most of her fondest childhood memories; including the swim team and playing tennis. She has a great appreciation for all that the PACC has to offer and looks forward to joining the community as a young adult.
As a reminder, under the current waiting list policy, dependent legacies converting to new membership will not be subject to the waiting list provided that they apply for the same membership classification which they currently enjoy.
Every month we mail over 1,000 member statements in a process that takes at least a full day and the time of two or more staff members to complete. Considering the cost of postage, labor and supplies this process costs over $28,000 per year. In an effort to be environmentally responsible and save time and money, we have decided to make email delivery of statements our standard method of delivery beginning January 1, 2023.
Our system allows us to designate up to three unique email addresses for statement delivery; you have the option of delivering to the primary member, spouse and/or your business email address. If you do not wish to receive your statement via email, you must OPT OUT by calling the administrative office at 757-428-4141 or emailing khusselbee@princessannecc.com and we are happy to continue sending you a paper statement. You can contact the office to designate the email address or addresses to be used for statement delivery. Otherwise, the January 2023 statement will be mailed to the email address of the primary member.
At their September 29th meeting, your Board of Directors approved the Club's fiscal year 2022-2023 operations budget, which began on October 1. Your Operations Team and Board spent a considerable amount of time developing a budget that addresses the ever-increasing wage levels for our Team as well as inflation levels that are having a tremendous impact on the cost of goods to operate the Club. While the Club has benefited from increased membership and dues levels, the pressure of the aforementioned items are putting substantial pressure on the Club's finances. In developing this budget, close attention was not only paid to operational expenses, but also to reserving funds for the Club's ongoing capital replacement needs as well as future aspirational capital projects that will continue to enhance your Member experience.
To balance 2022-2023 operating budget, the Board approved an increase to monthly dues of $50 for full and athletic Members and $25 for social Members, effective November 1, 2022. This additional investment in your Club will allow us to maintain our overall Member experience and solidify our Club's future.
We wrote to you in August with a message that encouraged you to reward our Club servers and bartenders for their hard work by leaving a gratuity when you dine at the Club. Thank you to those of you who have already shown this gratitude. We continue to ask that you reward our Team for a job well done; however your Board agreed with many of you who shared your feedback that this gesture along with the 20% service charge on dining checks was asking too much of our Princess Anne family. Effective now, the 20% service charge will be removed from à la carte dining checks. The fee will remain on private events and Club events.
Should you have any questions about these updates, please do not hesitate to reach out to General Manager Bill Shonk.
With recent inclement weather causing power and email outages at the Club, we want to remind you of our optional text messaging program. Our Team is poised to begin utilizing this program more to enhance our communications with you. Participants will receive key information about things happening at the Club, exclusive promotions offered in our golf, tennis and fitness areas as well as dining venues. This program also allows Management and Team the capability to reach out to our Membership in case there is an emergency on campus or changes in operations.
The program is completely optional and you may opt out at any time.

5. If you go to a new course to play, how do you know your handicap for that course? m a. Inquire within the pro shop of the course you are playing m b. Use the course Handicap Calculator on your GHIN app m c. Both a and b
1. How many holes do you have to complete before you can record an 18-hole score? m a. 18 m b. 13 m c. 14
2. How many holes do you have to complete for a 9-hole score? m a. 6 m b. 7 m c. 8
3. How do you calculate your score for the holes not played? m a. Use par m b. Use par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive based on your course handicap m c. Use net double bogey
4. How do you calculate your maximum score for each hole that you are playing? m a. Use net double bogey m b. Use a reasonable score for your ability m c. Use par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive, based on your course handicap
6. What if you play from a different tee than you usually play at PACC; how do you know your handicap from that tee? m a. Always use the same handicap regardless of the tees you play m b. Use ForeTees > click on Menu > View Handicaps; your handicap for each tee will be displayed along with your last 20 scores posted m c. Use My VSGA app and the Handicap Calculator m d. Both b and c
7. How long can you search for a ball? m a. Three minutes m b. Five minutes m c. As long as it takes
8. What happens if I double hit my ball? m a. You receive no penalty m b. You receive a two-stroke penalty m c. You receive a one-stroke penalty
9. What can I touch in a bunker without penalty? m a. The sand in front or behind the ball with your club m b. Loose impediments m c. Movable obstructions m d. Both b and c
10. If my ball is embedded in the rough, may I get relief?
m a. You must play the ball as it lies
m b. You may take one club length relief for a onestroke penalty.
m c. You may take free relief with no penalty
11. If I am putting off the green and notice that a fresh pitch mark off the green is in my line of play, should I:
m a. Repair the pitch mark before I putt
m b. Move my ball to the nearest point of relief m c. Putt my ball as it lies and consider it bad luck
12. In stroke play, if my ball is against an out-of-bounds fence and I need to take relief, is it a penalty?
m a. There is no penalty as long as the relief is not nearer the hole
m b. There is a one-stroke penalty
1. The answer is c. For the other four holes see the answer to #3
2. The answer is b. For the other two holes see the answer to #3
3. The answer is b. For instance if your handicap is 18 and you only played 14 holes, you should record a bogey for each of the last four holes. If your handicap is zero, you should record par for each hole.
4. The answer is a. At PACC, hole #1 is the number 1 handicap hole; assuming that your handicap entitles you to 1 stroke, your maximum score is 7: calculate this way, par 4 + 2 strokes is double bogey (6) + 1 handicap stroke = 7. If you get 2 strokes, your maximum score is 8: par 4 + 2 strokes is double bogey (6) + 2 handicap strokes = 8.
5. The answer is c. You can download either the “USGA GHIN” app or the “My VSGA” app. In both apps, go to the Handicap Calculator, select the course and tees you are playing and your handicap will display.
6. The answer is d.
7. The answer is a. After three minutes the ball is deemed to be lost, even if you find it after three minutes and one second. The three minutes starts when the player and/or their caddy begins to search. If others start to search before this, the clock does not start until the player begins the search.
8. The answer is a. If the ball hits anything there is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies. Note that the rule is different if the ball was played from the putting green.
9. The answer is d. Answer 'a' is always a penalty. There are, however, a number of other situations when touching the sand is not a penalty.
10. The answer is c. If the ball is embedded in the ground, either in the rough or the fairway, the player is entitled to free relief. Relief is one club length from a point directly behind the place where the ball is embedded. Note that if the ball is in the rough and the one club length reaches the fairway, you may drop the ball in the fairway.
11. The answer is c. However, if the pitch mark had been on the green, it could be repaired.
12. The answer is b. There is no free relief from a boundary fence. Other than playing the ball as it lies, the only option is to declare the ball unplayable. This is a one-stroke penalty and has three options: play under stroke and distance, drop back keeping the place where the ball lies in line with the flag stick or drop within two club lengths of where the ball lies, no closer to the hole.
m c. There is a two-stroke penalty Submit by emailing us at rules4golf @gmail.com
next time, keep the questions coming!

Winter is a time for us to keep improving the property. Play is at its lowest point, the grass has slowed, and the days are short. This allows us to focus on projects that will make a long-term impact on the property and the Member experience. Along with improving the golf course, other necessary actions are taking place on the property. Here is what we have to look forward to this winter; what we will be doing out there and some seasonal changes that may have already affected you this year.
This is when the temperature reaches a point where the moisture content in the plant is cold enough to freeze. When damage occurs, the plants' interior cells burst, killing the plant. That is why we ask that you try to stay off the turfgrass until it has time to thaw when we are on a frost hold. To the left is a photo of damaged caused by geese which shows how little weight needs to be applied before damage is caused.
Drainage work is essential to our success; without good drainage, we will fail to have championship-level conditioning. We work on drainage yearly and always try to find areas to improve the course by adding drainage. Our priority will be the left side of the #6 fairway. After that, we have a long list of other areas we will work on as time permits.
This January, we will begin our tee renovation project. The first phase will include #3, #8, #9, #11, #13, and #15 tees. We will be enlarging, sand capping, laser leveling, and drainage. In addition to that, we will also be taking care of some of the shade and root issues. This project is scheduled to wrap up in early March. Alternate tees will be placed so play can continue.
We have established a formal bunker plan to replace our current dunes on #6, #15, and #18. These bunkers will be maintained just like the rest of our bunkers on property.
This is a year-long battle, but we can make a strong push on this while the grass isn’t growing. We plan to continue to clear the areas we worked on last year, but there will be a few other areas that we will work on.
Have a safe and Happy Holidays!

Congratulations to our 2022 Windholz Memorial Champion, Bill Fairchild! Bill was able to keep his good play going, defeating tough competitor and fellow finalist, Charles Honey 4&3. Congrats to both players for making it to the finals, and congrats again to this year's champion, Bill Fairchild! Thanks to everyone the participated in this year's Windholz Memorial. We hope to see everyone back in the field again next year!
We had some of summer’s best days for the Member-Member. The addition of a northeast wind challenged players but they all answered back elegantly. We had 100 players tee it up this year, and they made it one of the most memorable to date.
Our Team would like to extend a huge congratulations to our 2022 Vincent G. Thomas Member-Member winners Jared Anderson and Brad Shoemaker. Following up their day one score of five under, this dream team came out and posted a seven under to finish 12 under for the tournament, winning their flight by three. In the end, their team would prove to be too much as they held off the competition. Brad Shoemaker’s three-foot bogey putt on the fourth shootout hole found the bottom of the cup to beat out their competition and give them the title of 2022 Vincent G. Thomas Champions! Thank you to all of our participants and we look forward to this event next year!
First flight: Preston Moore & Chris Devine • Second flight: Eric Polumbo & David Cockerill
Third flight: Andrew Alberico & Nick Szoke • Fourth flight: Brad Shoemaker & Jared Anderson
Fifth flight: Scott Swail & Joe Stoner • Sixth flight: Don Parnell & Josh Parnell
Despite poor weather in the area throughout the weekend, the Old Dominion women's golf team was able to get all three rounds of the Evie Odom Invitational in as the Monarchs finished 11th on Sunday, October 1st.
College of Charleston combined for a three-over par 843 to win the tournament, Minnesota was the runner up with a five-over 845, and South Florida took third with a 12-over 852. The Gophers made a significant jump in the standings on the final day thanks to a 17-under par 263, which marked a course team record.
Tough wind conditions on Thursday led to the Monarchs opening their home tournament with a 25-over 305, tying them for ninth. The team then recorded an eight-over 288 on Saturday to drop to 12th before firing a one-under 279 on Sunday to move up one spot. ODU finished at 32-over with a three-round total of 872.
Charleston's Emma Schimpf carded three rounds under par to secure individual medalist honors with a nine-under 201. She held off Minnesota's Mariana Mesones by two strokes, who shot a seven-under 203 to place second. Mesones set a new course record, as well as a program record, on Sunday with a final round of 62 (-8). She tallied eight birdies for her final trip around the course, to include five on the back nine.
Leah Onosato was the top finisher for ODU, tying for 22nd with a six-over 216. Lucia Gonzalez, Minami Kudo and Federica Torre all tied for 37th with scores of nine-over 219. Kudo turned in the team's best round of the Invitational on Sunday. The Hachinohe, Japan native made four putts for birdie to card a four-under 66 for her final 18 holes. Klara Wildhaber's 19-over 229 tied her for 72nd, and Pilar Muguruza came in 81st with a total of 246.
Gonzalez recorded one eagle and Torre led the Monarchs in pars with 37.
"Thank you to Evie Odom for her support this week," added ODU head coach Mallory Kane. "We love the opportunity to play in front of so many of our friends and family. The golf staff at the Princess Anne Country Club were exceptional this weekend. If it wasn't for all their help and hard work, this wouldn't have been possible.
Congratulations to the 2022 Challenge Match Champions, Talbot Jordan and Joanne Domson! They defeated Karen Worrall and Susan Wight 2&1 to take the title. On a beautiful day, these two teams battled it out during the round, with Jordan and Domson never losing a lead. Worrall and Wight kept the match close throughout the round though, and won on hole 16 to bring the match to dormie. The two teams halved hole 17, and the team of Jordan and Domson pulled through with the victory. Congratulations again to Talbot and Joanne, and a round of applause to our Runners-Up, Karen Worrall and Susan Wight! Thank you to all who participated throughout the summer.
We would like to congratulate Pat and Vicki Devine on their triumphant victory Sunday, finishing with a net 60 (-10) to win the overall championship by four strokes! Pat and Vicki ham and egged it throughout the round and beat out nine other great teams. Way to go, Pat and Vicki! Bask in your championship glory!
Another congratulations goes to our Gross Division Champions, Bill and Anita Fairchild, who shot a four over 74 to take the gross win on a match of cards against Joe and Karen Davis. Great playing Bill and Anita! Thank you to all couples who participated on what turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day to finish up the Mixed Pairs season. We had a blast with you all and we hope you did too!
The final round of the Richard D. Cooke Men's Club Championship teed off this morning as number one seed Michael Hays took on number two seed Bill McClanan. A back and forth start on holes one and two and the match was tied heading into hole three where play settled down, and both players settled into the match. Mr. McClanan found himself up two after great birdies on holes three and five. Tides turned quickly thereafter, as Mr. Hays won three holes in a row to take a one-up lead headed into the back nine. Holes were halved from ten to thirteen where a costly double by Bill gave Mike a two-up lead headed into fifteen. A good par by Mr. Hays on fifteen found himself three up. The match would stay this way as the first eighteen concluded.
A quick break and the players were back out on the course. Mr. Hays found himself in the left penalty area on hole one. He hit a miraculous shot to just outside where Mr. McClanan's ball lay. Mike then sunk the putt for par. Bill's birdie putt squeaked by the left side as the hole was halved with par. Loose shots by Mr. McClanan the second time around the front nine were costly, as Mr. Hays found himself up six standing on the fifth tee. A good par by Bill stopped the bleeding but the wounds were too much as Mike found himself seven up after 24 holes. A good par on seven followed up with a birdie on eight, Mr. Hays had collected a nine-up lead standing on the 27th hole. A par on the 27th hole gave Mr. Hays a 10 & 9 victory over a formidable opponent in Mr. Bill McClanan. A huge congratulations to Michael Hays on his 10th Richard D. Cooke Men's Club Championship, and a big round of applause for our 2022 Runner up Bill McClanan.
The final match of the Loius H. Windholz Ladies' Club Championship has concluded. Both players fought hard for this title, but only one could come out victorious. The front nine went back and forth between these fierce competitors. Alice won the first hole, but Aven turned around parred two to get the match back to being tied. Going into number seven, Mrs. Striffler was one up but Ms. Oliver turned it on to win that hole and eight taking the match back to tied.
Alice made a birdie on hole nine to begin the back one up. Aven quickly replied and won hole 10 to bring the match back to tied, she then went on to win 12 to go one up on Mrs. Striffler. On the very next hole, Mrs. Striffler had an opportunity to get the match to tied with six to play, and she took advantage of it. Alice made a fantastic birdie putt, and from that point on, never took her foot off the gas. She parred the following hole to go one up and sealed the victory with a beautiful par on 17. Alice won two up with one to play. Thank you to all of our participants this weekend! Congratulations to our runner up Aven Oliver, and most of all, the 2022 Loius H. Windholz Ladies' Club Champion, Alice Striffler!
It was a record-breaking two days at the Sixth Annual PACC Pro-Am to Benefit the Els for Autism Foundation. The weather on Sunday, October 16th was fall perfection for the welcome party and pro auction. Joining PACC honorary Member Ernie Els this year were PGA TOUR Champions players Tom Gillis, Stuart Appleby, Brett Quigley, Robert Allenby, Doug Barron, John Senden and Frank Lickliter. Twenty-three teams competed for the pro-am champion title with the Atlantic Bay Mortgage team taking home the trophy.
While Mr. Els put up a fantastic showing, coming in second place in the pro flight, recent VA Tech grad and former PACC Team Member Tom Crow bested the TOUR pros to claim the pro trophy. After two days of fun, just over $284,000 was raised to benefit the Els for Autism Foundation, Virginia Autism, Foundation, Families of Autistic Children in Tidewater and SEAL Kids, a record singleyear fundraising number for the event. In its six years, the pro-am has raised 1.3 million dollars. The generosity of the Princess Anne family truly knows no bounds. A special thank you to the event committee of Steve Van Horn, John Gibson, Mark Llobell, Dave Burton and Gary Beck for their tireless efforts in continuing to make the event a success, raising critical funds for the event beneficiaries and raising awareness for autism.
The final play day of the 2022 PALG season has came to an end on October 25th! Our PACC ladies battled it out in a Captain's Choice format (one of our favorites) the 'Ghosts and Goblins End Of Season Scramble'. On a cool, spooky day, our costumed ladies (and a couple goofy pros) made their way to the course to have a great day with a delicious lunch to follow. From witches, to blind mice, to golfball heads, the enthusiasm and costume creativity was a sight to see. Thank you to all of our ladies who have participated throughout the season and don't forget about our Turkey Day Scramble (November 22), as well as our holiday luncheon (December 13)! Below are the results of the play day.

Wilson adds another chapter to one of the game's most iconic racquet families with the new Ultra v4 series. The Wilson Ultra 100 V4 Tennis Racquet ushers in a new generation of Ultra with supreme style and invigorating performance. Thanks to a new construction and a new geometry, this racket plays unlike any Ultra before it. Highlighted by the integration of FORTYFIVE° into the lay-up for a softer, more comfortable feel along with enhanced stability, this frame upgrades the delivery of easy power for its users. Key geometrical updates include an expanded Sweet Spot Channel at the tip of the hoop for extra power and reduced bulk in the beams for a sleeker, more aerodynamic look. On the subject of looks, this racket has no rival: color-shifting blues dance to the different angles of sun rays deflecting off the racket surface for a dazzling display. FEATURES: FORTYFIVE° strategically embedded into the lay-up provides enhanced stability while increasing comfort Revolutionary design integrates beautiful, colorshifting blue tones with a matte finish for captivating look Expanded Sweet Spot Channel features cavity on inside of frame to extend cross strings and increase grommet movement for more power Crush Zone grommet system compresses at impact to boost power and ball dwell time on strings Revised geometry applies more comfortable, ergonomic design and reduces bulk while maintaining stability Parallel Drilling provides a consistent, more forgiving string bed response Agiplast plant-based bumper, grommet and end cap components reduce environmental footprint Racquet comes unstrung unless stringing is added. The Wilson Ultra 100 V4 Tennis Racquet is the most popular, versatile and powerful racket in the Ultra v4 lineup
We are thrilled to report that we brought the Spindle Cup home to it's rightful place after a dominant performance from our ladies! What an exciting weekend it was! We were tied for first place with CCV with five wins each after the first day but still had a lot of work to do on day two. We got out there for the singles matches in the morning and proceeded to win all four matches without dropping a single set, putting us solely in first place by three points over Norfolk Yacht going into the doubles. Three of the four doubles matches went to a third set but we managed to win all three of them and the fourth one won in straight sets giving us a clean sweep for PACC on day two and a convincing win which we enjoyed immensely!
Please congratulate our ladies with a high five if you see them! Here was our lineup:
Caroline Dozier
Dillon Yost

Lexi Rawls
Anne Standing (alt.)

Lisa Deaver/Yalonda Yost
Michelle Fox/Molly Hobbs

Think of it as having tools in your bag, the more tools the better equipped you are to beat different styles of players. One works better in some situations than the other although I would venture to say that slice works well in ALL situations from return of serve to approaching to volleying to lobbing. Topspin definitely works better from behind the baseline and as a mainstay for groundstrokes. In my experience working with women’s teams from about the 3.0 level on up to the 4.5 level the use of the slice has been integral to much of our success. Here are some reasons why:
1. A player that can slice well is almost always technically sound on volleys because they are slice based.
2. Slice is the best way to keep the ball low which is an essential skill in doubles.
3. Only slice can be used as a dropshot which effectively brings someone to the net that doesn’t want to be there or is just a stronger baseline player.
4. The slice lob or the “slob” as I like to refer to it is the easiest and safest way to get the ball over someone’s head in either a defensive or offensive situation.
5. A slice approach is also the easiest and safest shot to hit en route to the net as it requires very little backswing, can be taken on the rise and hit on the run.
6. The slice return of serve is effectively a “triple threat” shot as you can use a power slice deep, a short angle dropper or a slob with the exact same backswing.
7. A ball that is coming hard and fast can easily be “absorbed” with a block slice.
8. Lastly, using the slice as a “changeup” can be very effective in a predominantly topspin rally.
If you don’t know how to slice or how to topspin, I would highly recommend you seek instruction from your tennis professionals to learn these amazing and valuable skills!

I loved tennis as a kid. I played on my high school team and although I don’t play today, I am a big fan of the game. For a few years in middle school and high school I even thought about one day becoming a pro player, but unfortunately, that dream would not become a reality. Although this article is centered largely on tennis, the narrative is applicable to all sports that have a specific season
The principles are based on decades of ever improved knowledge in multiple fields of practice including exercise science, physical therapy, athletic training, biomechanics, sports nutrition, sports psychology and others. Whether you are a weekend warrior who plays a few tournaments a year, a golfer who plays regularly or a player looking to one day go pro; conditioning and recovery in the off season is very important It can make a big difference in the upcoming season and increase your chances of winning tournaments and remaining healthy during the season
