He retired from the Ophthalmology field after 30 years in sales. He invites your input and feedback as his desire is to focus on making the golf tournaments and daily play as accommodating as possible.

Having served as tennis committee chair and on the entertainment committee, she's ready and looking forward to this new chapter with fitness.
RULE CHANGE - WAITING LIST (New verbiage is shown in green).
B. Regular Membership
4. Waiting List. In the event that the maximum number of Members is reached, the following system will be utilized to accept Members when a space becomes available. Members/applicants will be placed onto one of the following waiting lists in date order by the date their completed application or request for upgrade/transfer was received by the Membership Director:
a. New legacy applicants and current members requesting an upgrade
b. Reinstatements of former Members, current Members on a leave of absence, non-legacy new applicants When a space becomes available, individuals will be welcomed to the membership from the two waiting lists on a 1:1 ratio basis, permitting one new Member from list one, then one new Member from list two and so forth.
Anytime the Club is on a waiting list, new Members wishing to upgrade must wait three years from the date of their membership activation to request the upgrade. Once the upgrade request is approved by the Board, the Member will be placed into list one of the waiting list based on the date the request was received by the Membership Director.
Dependent legacies converting to new membership, and divorcee applicants and non-residents transferring to resident memberships will not be subject to the waiting list provided that they apply for the same membership classification which they currently enjoy. Applicants on the waiting list will be locked in at the initiation fee their completed application is received by the Membership Director. Applicants must activate their membership within 30 days of a space becoming available or be subject to any initiation fee increases. Applicants on the waiting list shall be required to pay any assessments imposed on the membership between the date of application and the date the membership is activated. Payment of such assessments to be made upon activation of membership.

Your PACC team is excited to celebrate you and show you how much we appreciate you being a part of our Princess Anne family. Join us for complimentary beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres. March Madness games will be on display, so get your brackets ready!
We are excited to share with you the compiled results of the recent membership satisfaction survey. First and foremost, thank you for taking time to share feedback regarding your Club. The response rate was very strong as 922 surveys were completed. We are pleased to report that 94% of our Princess Anne Family is satisfied with their experience at the PACC!
The graphic on the next page highlights areas where the Club is doing well, areas that our Team will be focusing on to improve your PACC experience and your ranking of potential future capital improvement projects.
The Operations Team along with their respective Committees have developed action plans to address survey items that received lower rankings, many of which, we are happy to report, have already been addressed or are in progress. For example, new furniture for Breakers has been ordered and is scheduled to arrive in December; a refresh to the Ladies Lounge has begun to include fresh carpet, drapes, countertops and more; the Golf Committee implemented several adjustments to the tee time booking policy this past summer to help with tee time availibility issues; and new golf course bunker maintenance protocols have been implemented and several dunes will be converted to bunkers this winter. We look forward to keeping you updated as these plans continue to be implemented.

1. Moving your ball accidentally while searching for it: The player is no longer penalized for accidentally moving his ball when trying to find it, for instance in long grass or piles of leaves. This is true anywhere on the course (in a bunker, penalty area or the general area). If the spot where the ball was lying is not known, estimate the spot and place the ball there. If the ball was under long grass, it must be replaced under the grass.
2. Ball accidentally moved on putting green: If anyone accidentally moves a ball lying on the putting green, there is no penalty no matter how it was moved. Some examples are: kicking the ball, hitting the ball when making a practice swing, dropping a club on the ball. This also applies to moving a ball marker. To repeat, there is never a penalty for accidentally moving a ball or ball marker on the putting green.
3. Ball in motion accidentally hits any player, caddy or equipment: If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits a person, animal, equipment or anything else on the course, there is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies.
1. Repairing damage on the putting green: The player is allowed to restore the green to its original condition, which means he can do the following: repair ball marks, shoe damage(such as spike marks), scrapes and indentations from maintenance or other players, animal tracks, embedded objects such as stones and acorns. Normal wear and tear, natural imperfections, weeds and aeration holes may not be repaired.
2. Actions allowed in penalty areas: The player may take any action in a penalty area that is allowed in the general area. Some examples include: taking practice swings hitting the ground, removing loose impediments, probing to check for tree roots and obstructions.
3. Actions allowed in bunkers: The player is allowed to remove loose impediments such as leaves, sticks and pine cones.
Removing movable artificial objects as well as placing clubs and other equipment in a bunker is still allowed. Raking footprints and the like is now allowed prior to making a stroke so long as the line of play, area of stance and swing or lie of the ball is not improved.
4. Unplayable ball in bunker: If a player chooses not play from a bunker he has always had the option to play from where he made the last stroke for a 1 stroke penalty (stroke and distance). Now there is an additional option to drop outside the bunker, back on the line, keeping the spot where the ball lay in line with the flagstick. This option comes with a 2 stroke penalty.
Happy Holidays PACC Family! Your Golf Course Maintenance Team has been busy with our regular winter maintenance, but we are about to head into project season. There is a lot in store this winter. We will begin our tee renovation project shortly after the new year. At the same time, we will be relocating the fence on the west side of the driving range. Here are more specifics of each project and its timeline.
This is a three-phase project. This winter’s first phase will address #3, #8, #9, #11, #13, and #15 tees. This project will involve coring out the existing soil four-six inches deep, adding a subsurface drainage, sand-compost growing medium, then laser grading and sodding the tee. We will sod with a newer plant species (Zeon Zoysia). This species will remain green almost all winter and give a much more dense canopy in shade or full sun.
Along with making those improvements, we will also enlarge the size of some of these tees where our play has outgrown the teeing area. Under course architect Tim Liddy's design advice, we will enlarge and reshape #3, #8, #11 and #15. As this project unfolds, we will offer an alternative teeing area allowing continuous play.
Starting after the new year, we will relocate the fence that sits west of the range tee. This process will improve safety and the Member’s experience. Hercules Fence will install a new golf netting system that will be 10 feet higher and relocated at a better angle to open up hitting and sight lines. We will also be doing drainage work off the front of the range tee and fixing some of the existing golf netting along the east side of the driving range. The range will be closed from January 9 – March 1.
The driving range enhancements will also include the addition of a new golf instruction hitting bay. This 20x22 foot building will be located on the Pinewood Rd. side of the driving range and will include one hitting bay and an intimate teaching/learning environment. A large garage-style door will open so players can hit from inside the building onto the range. The bay will include technology to enhance the instruction program and afford Members a great opportunity to work on their game. While longer hitters will only be able to work on irons and wedges from this area, the 165-yard carry to the back fence will suffice for most practice.
Don’t forget to fix your ball marks and rake your bunker!

In what seems to be a blink of an eye, the 2022 season of the Princess Anne Senior Men’s Golf Association (PASMGA) has come to an end and what a fantastic season! With participation ranging from 30 to 50 or more players, the PASMGA play days always offered a ton of fun to everyone playing. From Casino Day to Devil’s Delight, a wide variety of formats were used to spice things up during each week and the PASMGA tournaments had great turnouts! The PASMGA Member-Member was won by Tom Hyman and Bill Fairchild. The Senior Club Championship was won by Michael Hays and the Super-Senior Club Championship was won by George Owens. This great group of guys always shows up ready to go, with plenty of banter and good times to be had.
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the PASMGA Chairman John Mazach for his work in leading this crew. We can’t wait to see what lies ahead for this group of golfers in the 2023 season!
Another year is in the books for the Princess Anne Lady Golfers (PALG)! From April through October, the ladies enjoyed fun formats and great golf on Tuesday mornings in addition to wonderful tournaments throughout the season.
As a whole, participation grew with play days averaging 25-30 ladies each week. The number of new faces has brought great energy and enthusiasm! Tournament attendance was also strong, including our Member-Guest which was well received by all that attended. Our ladies also enjoyed success in our inter-club events with the Triumvirate team bringing home the hardware after defeating Bayville and Cavalier at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. Along with the Triumvirate win, our ladies also brought out the brooms to sweep the inter-club tournaments with their win at the Beach Cup!
Thank you to our Chair Alice Striffler for her leadership and hard work this season to make the PALG such a great organization. We look forward to a wonderful 2023 with all of our PALG members!
The Princess Anne Junior Golf Program continues to grow year after year. In 2022, we saw an increase in junior golfer participation from 135 to 184. We continued Birdie Basics, a program dedicated to our youngest golfers ranging from three to six years old. The class is centered on learning through story, narrated by Mama Birdie! The kids have really enjoyed hearing about Mama Birdie and what she is teaching each week. Our Operation 36 program continues to flourish with over 40 juniors participating this year. Our Virginia Beach Junior League team had fantastic participation this year with 38 juniors split into two teams, Blue and Black. The Blue Team advanced all the way to the championship match, but suffered a heart breaking loss to Bayville. Jack Trant was the recipient of the 2022 Beck-Paolini Award, given to the junior golfer of the year. The success of our program is attributed to the hard work and dedication from the entire Golf Professional team and any volunteers who donated their time along the way! Thank you to all juniors that participated this year and we look forward to an even better 2023 season.

Want to play like the pros? If you want to play like Serena Williams or Roger Federer, you've got to practice like them. Maximizing improvement is a three-pronged process: instruction, practice, matchplay. Many of you play regular practice matches but how many of you actually get practice reps on a backboard, ball machine or hitting partner? If you've played the game for any length of time, you know that having confidence in your game comes from having reliable shots and having reliable shots comes from good technique and practice. Once you decide to practice, I would recommend showing up with a detailed practice plan. If you're ready to practice and, more importantly play like a pro, these tennis tips will get you on the right track.
Tip #1
What's the first step to play tennis better? You've got to show up to practice with a plan. In my opinion, this is one of the most over looked tennis tips. Don't just show up to the courts with your gear and wing it. You've got to have a plan in place before you enter the court and cross the baseline. It sounds simple, but so many tennis fans, particularly recreational players (weekend warriors), do it time and time again. Like anything in life, if you want to get better at it, you've got to spend time on it. Tennis is no different, and time working on a practice plan is time well spent.
My coach used to tell me, plan your work and work your plan. Simple, but true. However, you've got to put together the right plan based on your needs. Think of it this way: If you have poor footwork, how will it help you to hit 500 ground strokes? In order to build a practice plan, consider: What are my weaknesses? What can I practice to address those weaknesses? Ask your pro both of these questions as well as, “If you were coaching against me what would you tell my opponent?”
From there, craft a training plan to address your weaknesses, with a plan for each individual practice. If you have a coach, work with them to come up with a more detailed plan! The more specific you are when identifying gaps in your game, the more specific you can be to address those gaps. Whether you're playing traditional tennis, or even pickleball, doing the right drills to improve certain deficiencies in your game is always a good idea. Go into a practice knowing exactly what you want to accomplish.
Tennis Tip #2 - Stick to a Single Pattern of Play
Another mistake many novice players make is trying to get creative every time they step on the court. Of all the tennis tips I've laid out here for you, this one was by the far the hardest for me to actually implement. It was hard because I would always drift from my pattern of play on the fly, mid match and try something different. I reacted way too much when I should have been sticking to the plan and a single style of play that emphasized my strengths. Let me explain what this tip really means. Take some time to watch winning matches by tennis greats. If you're paying attention, you'll notice that these players aren't rotating through a dozen play patterns in a match. What is a play pattern? Well, by that I mean how they approach each point to set themselves up so they game is played to their strengths.
For example: don't get cute by trying to win points with backhands when your go to shot is a cross court forehand. Set up for your cross court forehand...every...single...time. Again, watch the game's best players and look for their play patterns. Are they using many different patterns to win a point or match? No. Instead, they only use one or two.
Think of it this way: you have a few shots that you know you can always nail, right? These are different than shots you like to hit. These are shots you know you can execute beautifully every time. Build your play pattern around your bread and butter strokes. This is a tennis tip that has been utilized by tennis coaches for a long, long time. Whether you're a high school beginner or a seasoned professional, the goal is the same. Play to your strengths. Instead of trying to confuse your opponent with shots you're not as good at (hint: it's not going to work) instead focus on playing to your strongest shots. You'll end up with a far more consistent match.
Can a good pair of court shoes improve footwork? It doesn't matter if you can hit a ball harder than the Incredible Hulk, if you can't get to the ball fast enough and get your feet properly set, you'll never be able to take a proper swing. Before you can hit that favorite shot of yours we talked about in tennis tip #2, you've got to be able get in position.
In fact, the number one cause of missed shots in tennis is when a player is out of position. This is where footwork can really save you. Having exceptional footwork can get you in position to hit your best stroke and take your game to the next level. Having a great pair of dedicated court shoes can help, but they'll only take you so far. You've got to know where to be on the court and when to be there in order to improve your footwork. Shoes alone won't improve your reaction time, but drills will.
The big news this year for the pro shop is going to be the addition of a big and very famous account, Lululemon! Yes that’s right, we’ll be the only Lululemon retailer at the oceanfront. The only other storefront they have is in Town Center. We’re also slated for a major renovation in the shop this year which will include moving the front desk and knocking out walls. The tennis bathrooms are also up for a refresh this year.

• ½ pound black-eyed peas, soaked until rehydrated, overnight or at least 4 hours
• 1 bay leaf
• 4 cloves garlic, whole
• 7 cups water
• 1 ½ teaspoons salt
Greens & Remaining Ingredients
• 1 ½ teaspoons salt
• 2 lbs Kale, collard or turnip greens, stemmed
• 4 slices bacon, cut crosswise into thin strips
• Oil
• ½ medium onion
• 2 cloves garlic
• 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
• Table salt
FOR PEAS: Bring peas, bay leaf, garlic, and water to simmer in large saucepan. Simmer, partially covered, until beans are just tender, 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in salt, cover, and let peas stand until completely tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid, and discard bay leaf and garlic. (Beans in liquid can be cooled, covered, and refrigerated up to 5 days.)
FOR GREENS: Bring 2 quarts water to boil in dutch oven or large, deep sauté pan. Add salt and greens; stir until wilted. Cover and cook until greens are just tender, about 7 minutes; drain in colander. Rinse pan with cold water to cool, then refill with cold water. Pour greens into cold water to stop the cooking process. Gather handful of greens, lift out of water and squeeze until only droplets fall from them. Repeat with remaining greens. Roughly cut each bunch of greens. Set aside.
Fry bacon in a large sauté pan over medium-low heat until crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove bacon with slotted spoon and set aside. If necessary, add oil to bacon drippings to bring up to 2 tablespoons. Add onion and garlic; sauté until softened, 4 to 5 minutes.
Add greens; sauté, stirring, to coat with oil. Stir in black-eyed peas and 1 cup reserved bean cooking liquid. Add vinegar and reserved bacon, bring to simmer; cover, and cook to blend flavors, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning. Ladle portion of beans and greens into each of four soup plates; dress each with portion of vinegar and bacon bits. Serve.
