This February 17th, the goodwill was flowing among our Team and Members…and kept right on going to their friends & neighbors! Our Team's idea was to randomly give a two-gift card set to a Member and ask them to 'pay it forward' by giving one of the gift cards to another Member. Each set contained one $20 card (for the Member) and a $10 card (for whomever they chose to give it to). The gift card sets were randomly distributed to Members in each department.
Not only did Members give their $10 card away to other Members, some gave both cards away to Members and even Team!
What a fantastic day of smiles and joy. We love to celebrate “Random Acts of Kindness Day”...everyday!
On Saturday, February 4, for the seventh year straight, a brave group of our PACC Team Members and friends jumped into the freezing Atlantic to support the Special Olympics of Virginia! The ‘PACC Plungers’ were the #3 fundraising team out of 287! They not only helped raise over $38,600 of the festival’s record-breaking $1.5 million, but they boldly ran into the ocean in show of their support on a balmy 31o winter day. Click here to view the PACC Plunger's web page.
The plunge is much more than just an icy dip in the water. Special Olympics of Virginia provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities and health services to more than 19,000 athletes of all abilities. They are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place - one athlete, one volunteer, one family member, one plunger at a time.
This event provides wonderful exposure of our Club's philanthropic efforts and close team bond. Congratulations to Captain Kristen Bunting and our entire PACC Team for their fundraising efforts and bravery in support of this wonderful cause!

Hole #17: A Scenic Par Three with Sand, Water and Out of Bounds.
Question 1: I usually play hole #17 from the forward tees. What are my options if I unfortunately pull my shot and it splashes into the water?
Guru's Answer: If the PACC Local Rule is not in effect for the competition, the area is a “Yellow Penalty Area” and you have 3 options (Rule 17.1b,c and d):
1. Play the ball from where it came to rest; if this is not possible, use #2 or #3 below.
2. Play again from the teeing area for a 1 stroke penalty. You will be hitting your 3rd shot. The first was the shot that went into the water; the second is your penalty stroke. Your next stroke from the teeing area is your third.
3. Estimate the spot where the ball LAST crossed the yellow line before entering the penalty area; standing outside of the penalty area, behind this spot, visualize a line running through the spot in line with the flagstick. You may then drop a ball anywhere on this line. When dropping, the ball must first land on this imaginary line and may roll up to 1 driver length in any direction, including closer to the hole than where it landed on the line. However, it may not be closer to the hole than the spot where it crossed into the penalty area. This procedure is called “Back-on the line Relief”. This option is not always possible or practical. In these cases hitting again from the tee may be the only option.
Local Rule:
If the PACC Local Rule is in effect the situation is quite different. First, what is this rule for #17? It states that when playing from the white, yellow or red tees the area marked by the yellow line is to be treated as a “red penalty area.” Pretend the line is red, not yellow.
When the Local Rule is in effect the player has four options for a ball that comes to rest in the penalty area. The first three options are the same as above when the ball is in a yellow penalty area. However, now that the ball is deemed to be in a red penalty area, the player has a fourth option (Rule 17.1d3).
Option 4: the player may drop a ball 2 driver lengths from the point where the ball LAST crossed into the red penalty area. The ball may not be closer to the hole than that point.
Question 2: What happens if the ball actually makes it to the left of the green and then bounces into the water? I recently saw a golfer hit a tee shot that bounced left of the green and rolled into the water. She then took her relief from where it entered the water and was able to drop it near the green. Is that correct?
Guru's Answer: Let’s assume the golfer was playing from the white, yellow or red tees and that the Local Rule was in effect. If the tee shot landed on the ground beyond the line marking the penalty area, the player proceeded correctly. The Local Rule states that if the play is from the white, yellow or red tees, the yellow line is treated as a red line; the area is a red penalty area and the player may use option 4, dropping two driver lengths from where the ball crossed into the penalty area. So, yes, the golfer proceeded correctly.
If the Local Rule was not in effect, or the golfer played from the black or green tees, the area was treated as a yellow penalty area and they had to take relief on the tee side of the line (refer to the first three options in question 1).
Question 3: What happens if you putt or “skull” your ball from the right side of the green into the water?
Guru's Answer:
Again, it depends on which tees the player is playing from and on whether the Local Rules is in effect. Assuming the Local Rule and play from the white, yellow or red tees, The ball is in a red penalty area and 4 options are available:
1. The player can replay the shot for a one-stroke penalty.
2. The player can play the ball from where it came to rest in the penalty area.
3. The player can use the “back-on-the-line option and the drop would be on the tee side of the green (probably this would not be practical). This is also a one-stroke penalty.
4. The player can drop two driver lengths from where the ball crossed into the penalty area. Again this is a one-stroke penalty.
Question 4: It seems that it is important to know the Local Rules when playing any golf course. Are the Local Rules in effect at all times? Where can I get a copy?
Guru's Answer: The Local Rules are still in effect and are in use for all daily play. It is generally in effect for most of our tournaments, but players should verify this. You can get a copy of the Local Rules at the pro shop.
Using the back, toe or heel of a club to hit the ball:
Question: Recently my ball landed near a tree trunk and I could not swing forward to advance my ball. I turned my club around and hit the ball with the other side of my iron. My friends gasped and said that was a penalty. Was I right or wrong?
Guru's Answer: You were right. Rule 10.1a states in part: “The player must fairly strike at the ball with any part of the head of the club.”
Relief from fences:
Question: I played number 18 and hit my second shot beside the fence that runs next to the practice area. I was told that I did not get relief and that it would cost me a penalty stroke to take relief. Right or wrong?
Guru's Answer: Wrong. The boundary stakes are on the practice range side of the netting, so the netting is in bounds and is an immovable obstruction from which the player gets free relief.
There are some new Rules of Golf that are in effect for 2023. Here are five new rules that are may be of interest to you this year.
The Golden Rules wants to thank Julie Holland for providing some questions in this edition.
Julie recently received her free sleeve of golf balls at the golf shop!
As you may be aware, we have struggled with drainage on the driving range resulting in drainage issues. The golf course maintenance team has added sand and more than 300 linear feet of new drainage to the range to improve this. In addition, a new target green is being added in the middle of the range to accommodate the white flag.
The former 20-foot fence has been removed. The new 30-foot poles are now set and in the ground on our newly established fence line. The next step will be to set and concrete the 15-foot privacy fence posts behind the golf netting. Then they will add a 15-foot privacy screen and a 30-foot netting system. The range expansion project is also on pace to be finished by mid-March.
The Club's 20/20 & Beyond Master Plan included a golf simulator located in the northern bay of the golf cart barn. When complete, this space will be available to the membership as an opportunity to play golf or practice indoors alone or with your friends. The room has been demolished and prepped, new plumbing has been run and capped and the interior walls have been framed (see video on the next page). In addition, all previous access points have been covered and a new entry door has been added and framed. The contractor will be adding dry wall/firewall and electrical next. We are currently on track to complete the project by mid-summer.
The Tee Complex Project is progressing well as planned. We have added drainage, sand capped, enlarged, and are cleaning up the landscape on the following six tee complexes… #3, #8, #9, #11, #13, #15, and the Black tee on #16. Beginning February 21st, we will start sodding the tee tops. We look forward to debuting our new and improved tees this spring. This process will involve numerous grow-in steps to ensure we can offer the best long-term playing conditions. Here are the processes and timelines everyone can expect.
• Before we lay the sod, we will apply a pre-plant fertilizer. This will provide the plant with the essential nutrients and encourage growth and development.
• The next step is to lay the sod on the tee top.
• After laying the sod over the next two weeks, we will continue to supply the sod with adequate water to encourage root development.
• With the current soil temperatures, we expect the plant to develop roots in 10-14 days. Once the plant has enough roots to hold to the soil, we will roll the sod with a 2-ton roller. This will help level out the sod and help eliminate the sod lines.
• After the tees have been rolled, we will walk mow the tees to establish a tee cut line.
• After the first mow, we will heavily topdress the seams and other sod depressions. This process will help even any low spots and strengthen the plants’ stability.
• Within a few weeks, the plant will grow out of the sand. At that point, we will open the tee boxes for day-to-day play.
Temporary tee boxes will be used on these holes during renovation. These temporary tees will be well marked and highly visible. The Golf Operations Team has consulted with the VSGA regarding handicapping and score posting during this time. The VSGA recommends players still post their scores from their respective tees. The World Handicap system will adjust using the Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC). During this time it is equally important to post your scores for the PCC adjustments to be made accurately. We greatly appreciate everyone's patience as we complete these projects.
We do remind you that these are active work zones and ask that if you take a peek, to do so at a safe distance without interfering with the contractors.
We will keep you all updated with more information and pictures in the coming weeks!

Spring is right around the corner which means it’s almost time for the bubble to come down and our outdoor season to commence! The bubble is scheduled to be taken down on April 24, but, as always, it will be weather dependent. We will keep everyone informed with any changes along the way. We will be saying a final good-bye to our bubble which, we have to say, has served us well over its 15 year lifespan giving us a lovely environment for endless hours of play. Its departure will be making way for our new bubble coming this fall which will have a slightly taller ceiling, new LED floodlights, brand new quieter motor, new doors and a new covered storage unit on the east side of court four.
Spring USTA Leagues will start soon. The schedule has not been released yet, but it usually starts between the end of March and mid-April and runs six to eight weeks depending on number of teams participating. We have over 50 ladies signed up just for the 2.5 - 3.0 level, which is unprecedented. That’s enough for four + teams.
Spring season is also the start of Cup season, which kicks off with Virginia Cup Saturday, April 29 to be held at the Westwood Club in Richmond. The very next day is the Fun Cup. For the rest of our Cup events and other tournaments, make sure to check out our 2023 calendar of events below!

Do you want to be more consistent with your volleys and get more depth and pace?
Start by getting rid of the frying pan grip, the vertical racquet head and, more importantly, make sure you flex the wrist back to where the racquet head is behind your wrist on contact.
What do I mean by that?
I see a lot of Club players holding their racquet like a candlestick in the dark, with a vertical racquet position rather than at a 45 degree angle. This will be made easier with a slight grip change from frying pan to continental which is more of a 'shaking hands' grip. A volley stroke needs to be designed to efficiently handle balls at different heights such as ankle level, knee level, hip level, shoulder level, and, yes sometimes, even above the shoulders, which requires the most proper technique of them all.
This is why establishing a consistent V- shape between the racquet and forearm will help with your consistency. Candlestick volleys work fine when the ball is above the net level but not so much on anything below that.
There are two things that we need to focus on to establish your ideal volley stroke.
1. The preparation
2. The contact and finish
Keep your feet moving through the ball instead of grinding to an abrupt halt in the middle of it taking away all that inertia which could be used for power and depth!
Our Holiday Tennis Camp hosted over 150 kids during the three-day event, which was great to see. The players, ages 4-18, were spread out over all seven courts according to their age and level. Everyone had a great time before the holidays!
We hosted our first UTR junior tournament with total of 25 competitors. This was a great way to introduce our academy players to tournament match play! UTR stands for Universal Tennis Rating which is essentially a “level based’ competition rather than age or gender based. Boys and girls, ages 9-13, were thrown together in a draw and they played for four hours in a round-robin format. Matches were timed at 20-minute intervals with each participant trying to win as many games as possible within that time frame. Here are the results:
Blue Division:
First Place: Connor Horan
Second Place: Frankie Mihlon
Third Place: Jonathan Poteran
Red Division:
First Place: Mary Kate McGuigan
Second Place: Kate Mihlon
Third Place: Sam Perkins
Yellow Division:
First place: Vaughan Peterson
Second Place: Caroline Cox
Third Place: Hannah Bowen
Green Division:
First Place: Lily Beth Hedley
Second Place: Stella Perkins
Third Place: Alice James

Lululemon is a brand that has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years for its high-quality and stylish athletic wear. With its roots in yoga, the brand has expanded to include a wide range of athletic apparel for men and women, including tennis players. As a result, we are excited to announce that we are introducing Lululemon to our tennis pro shop.
Why Lululemon?
Lululemon's dedication to quality and performance has made it a popular choice for athletes in a variety of sports. Their fabrics are designed to move with the body and wick away sweat, making them perfect for the intense physical activity involved in tennis. Additionally, their stylish designs mean that players can look and feel their best on the court.
What products will be available?
We will be stocking a range of Lululemon products specifically designed for tennis players, including tops, shorts, and leggings for both men and women. These products are made from high-quality materials that are designed to withstand the rigors of the sport, while also being comfortable and stylish.
Introducing Lululemon to our pro shop will provide a number of benefits to our players. Firstly, it will give players access to highquality athletic wear that is specifically designed for the demands of tennis. This will help them to perform at their best and feel comfortable and confident on the court.
Additionally, by stocking Lululemon in our pro shop, we will be able to offer our players a wider range of options when it comes to choosing their athletic wear. This will make it easier for them to find products that suit their individual needs and preferences. Finally, offering Lululemon in our pro shop will help to enhance our reputation as a leading provider of tennis equipment and apparel. By staying up to date with the latest trends and brands, we demonstrate our commitment to providing our players with the best possible experience.

EASIEST-EVER FISH IN FOIL
SERVES 4 | TIME: 35 minutes
WHAT KIDS ARE SAYING
I got to use a zester for the first time, and kids don’t usually get to use those kinds of things!”
—Grace, recipe tester, age 7
This weeknight-ready dish might be simple to make, but it’s still full of flavor. It uses a cooking method called “en papillote,” or cooking food inside a sealed packet. We fill ours with cod fillets, lemon, herbs and butter. The aluminum foil packets are fun for kids to fold, minimize mess, and also help the fish cook evenly. While kids fold, explain that,in the oven, the packets will trap steam inside them, which helps the fish cook from all sides. Water in the ingredients turns to steam as it heats up in the oven. When kids carefully open their packet to eat, ask them if they notice that steam escaping.
Ingredients
• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
• ½ teaspoon grated lemon zest, zested from ½ lemon, plus lemon wedges for serving
• ½ teaspoon table salt
• ⅛ teaspoon pepper
• 4 (6-ounce) skinless cod fillets, 1 to 1½ inches thick
• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 4 pieces
Instructions
BEFORE YOU BEGIN: If you want a simple bread-crumb topping for your fish, give this a try. In a small, microwave-safe bowl, stir together ¼ cup panko bread crumbs, 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil, and pinch of salt. Cook in microwave for one minute. Stir mixture and continue to cook in microwave until panko is golden brown, 30 seconds to one minute longer. Sprinkle over your baked fish just before serving.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 450 degrees. Cut four large pieces of aluminum foil.
2. In small bowl, combine thyme, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Place one fillet on one side of each piece of foil. Sprinkle thyme mixture evenly over fillets and top with butter.
3. Fold empty side of foil over cod. Fold up edges of foil and pinch together to create sealed packet. Transfer packets to rimmed baking sheet.
4. Place baking sheet in oven and bake until cod registers 140 degrees on instantread thermometer, 12 to 15 minutes.
Use oven mitts to remove baking sheet from oven and place on cooling rack. Transfer packets to plates and carefully open. Serve with lemon wedges.
