Robert (a Hokie) and Ann Laurence (a Wahoo) are delighted to join the Princess Anne Country Club. Fun fact, they held their wedding reception here in 2018! After spending several years living and working in the D.C. area, they are grateful for the opportunity to live back in Virginia Beach. Ann Laurence grew up in the North End and Robert fell in love with the area when he moved here for work after graduate school. When they are not working, they enjoy traveling with good friends and family, exploring new restaurants, attending UVA and VT games, and daily sunrise beach walks with their labradoodle, Winnie. They look forward to spending time golfing and dining at the club with friends.

Luke and Dawn met in Winston-Salem, NC. Dawn was in her third year of medical school at Wake Forest and Luke was beginning his internship in internal medicine. After they were married, they attended UVA where Dawn completed her radiology training and Luke his cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships. While in Charlottesville, they welcomed their daughter, Addison. Addy is now nine years old and a second grader at Norfolk Academy. She is artistic, adventurous and loves animals. The Kohans moved to Virginia Beach five years ago and live in Bay Colony. Luke is the director of cardiovascular medicine at Sentara Leigh Hospital, where he practices as an interventionalist for Sentara Cardiology. Dawn is a breast radiologist with MCR, as well as an assistant professor at EVMS. She is founder/ faculty advisor of the EVMS RAD-AID chapter and is proud of the important work they are doing with their sister hospital in Tanzania. As a family, the Kohans enjoy skiing, paddle boarding, playing tennis and riding bikes. Luke and Addy love to fly fish on a quiet morning. Addison has also taken up horseback riding, just like her mom who rode for the equestrian team at UNC. The Kohans are a foster family for the SPCA and often have a couple of kittens in the house getting ready for adoption. Their spotted puppy, Wanton, came to join the family last year as a foster fail. The Kohans are excited to be making lasting memories with new friends and old at the Princess Anne.
As a reminder, under the current Waiting List Policy, dependent legacies converting to new membership are not subject to the waiting list provided that they apply for the same membership classification which they currently enjoy.
Almost three years ago, Lauren, Wade and their two boys moved to Virginia Beach from New York City, where they lived for 20 years. Since arriving, they have come to love the many friends they have made and experiences they have enjoyed through the boys' school, Cape Henry Collegiate, and their varied sports programs, such as soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball and golf. Wade and Lauren have even coached several seasons of soccer and basketball in Great Neck. Wade runs his digital company from home which gives them added flexibility for the fun things like hosting parties, binge-watching Netflix, running and raising their two golden retrievers, Summer and Daisy. An always-active family, when the Michener-Murray’s can squeeze in travel. They are off, most recently to the Jersey shore. They are very excited to become Members of the Princess Anne community and look forward to making new friends, participating in activities and becoming more involved with their new home.

Anna completed her doctorate as a nurse anesthetist and works with Sentara Medical Group at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital and Joe owns and operates a State Farm Agency. Both Anna and Joe played college sports. Joe played lacrosse at UVA and Anna played soccer at the University of Delaware. They are avid golfers and love to fish and surf. They look forward to spending time with Anna’s parents Michael and Jeanne Lenczyk and their many friends at the PACC.
At the time of publication, the Princess Anne has 149 applicants on our waiting list. We have welcomed 19 new Members, reinstated two Members, welcomed three Members back from a Leave of Absence, processed two Member upgrades, converted one Dependent Legacy to full membership and awarded one Honorary membership. As a reminder, the Board of Directors set the cap for Resident Full/Athletic Members at 740 and 160 for Non-Resident Full Members. Each time we fall below the Resident Full/Athletic cap of 740, we are able to welcome one new Member into that membership category. We are currently eight over the cap for Non-Resident Full memberships and on a freeze for both Resident and Non-Resident Social memberships. The average wait time on the waiting list for Resident Full/Athletic members is one-and-a-half years. Year to date, we have received 70 applications for membership which is well above our 10 and 15 year average.
In the event that the maximum number of Members is reached, the following system is utilized to accept Members when a space becomes available. Members/applicants will be placed onto one of the following waiting lists in date order by the date their completed application or request for upgrade/transfer was received by the Membership Director:
a. New legacy applicants and current Members requesting an upgrade
b. Reinstatements of former Members, current Members on a leave of absence, non-legacy new applicants
When a space becomes available, individuals are welcomed to the membership from the two waiting lists on a 1:1 ratio basis, permitting one new Member from list one, then one new Member from list two and so forth.
Anytime the Club is on a waiting list, new Members wishing to upgrade must wait three years from the date of their membership activation to request the upgrade. Once the upgrade request is approved by the Board, the Member will be placed into list one of the waiting list based on the date the request was received by the Membership Director.
Dependent legacies converting to new membership, divorcee applicants and non-residents transferring to resident memberships will not be subject to the waiting list provided that they apply for the same membership classification which they currently enjoy. Applicants on the waiting list will be locked in at the initiation fee at the time their completed application is received by the Membership Director. Applicants must activate their membership within 14 days of a space becoming available or be subject to any initiation fee increases. Applicants on the waiting list shall be required to pay any assessments imposed on the membership between the date of application and the date the membership is activated.
In 2024, the club will complete the PACC 20/20 & Beyond plan. We are excited for the culmination of this six-year endeavor.

Before, during and after tournaments, our Members submit questions about The Rules of Golf. Some of these questions arose during recent tournaments at PACC
Question 1: Poison Ivy
Is there relief from poison ivy in a hazard area? I found my ball in a penalty area and I was able to hit it. But it was lying under poison ivy. Do I get relief from this plant that I’m allergic to and that causes me to immediately break out?
Answer: Unfortunately, there is no free relief from poison ivy (nor from stinging nettles, cacti, etc.). Unpleasant conditions are a common occurrence which the players must accept. Other than playing the ball as it lies, the other choice from the penalty area (no longer called a “hazard”) is to take relief under the penalty area Rule (17), costing one stroke. The player does not have to retrieve the ball; she may substitute another ball.
Question 2: Bunkers
My ball went into a bunker and plugged into the side wall. It did not roll down. Do I get any relief? I think I have an option to take the ball out of the bunker for a two-stroke penalty, but how do I determine where to drop it?
Answer: Since the ball was embedded in the sand and was in a bunker, there is no free relief. Your options under the unplayable ball rule are:
1. Drop the ball in the bunker two club lengths from where it lies
2. Drop the ball in the bunker “back on the line”
3. Go back to where the previous shot was made and drop within one club length of that spot
There is one penalty stroke for each of these options. Finally, for two penalty strokes, you may drop a ball “back on the line” outside the bunker Go to question #4 for an explanation of “back on the line”.
I hit a really good drive on number 14. It landed right beside a drainage cover. It did not affect my stance and I was able to swing without hitting the cover. However, it was so close that I was uncomfortable swinging, in case my club hit the cover. I did not take relief because I always play by the rules and did not want to do anything wrong. What are my options?
Answer: Rule 16.1 covers relief from an “immovable obstruction”, in this case a drainage cover, which is in the “general area”. Interreference exists when:
a. the ball lies on or touches the cover
b. the player has to stand on the cover
c. the cover physically interferes with the player’s “area of intended swing”, in other words the club will probably hit the drain cover
If the cover is close enough to distract the player, but does not meet any of the above requirements, there is no interference and no free relief. If you do not wish to play the ball as it lies, you may use the “unplayable ball Rule” for one penalty stroke.
Question 4: Provisional
I pulled my shot on #10. It was headed for the left side of the fairway. I thought it was out of bounds, so I took a provisional. I looked for my ball and found it. It was not out of bounds. It was against a fence and I didn’t think I had a swing. Could I have used my provisional? What were my options?
Answer: When you found your original ball, playing the provisional ball was no longer an option. The Rule states that the provisional ball must be abandoned when the original ball is found on the course before the three-minute search time has ended, or if the original ball is in a “penalty area”. If the fence next to the ball was a boundary fence (there is a boundary fence on the left of #10), there is no free relief; you must play the ball or declare it unplayable. If the fence had not been a boundary fence, you were entitled to free relief from an “immovable obstruction”.
Question 5: Unplayable Ball
I was playing in a tournament when I hit my ball deep inside a bush. It was not in a penalty area. I wanted to take an unplayable and did not honestly know all the options. My opponent said I could take two club lengths and that was my option. Well, two club lengths still kept me under the bush! I thought there was another option. She said "No way, take it or leave it”! Now I’m going to learn that rule!
a. How many options are available for an unplayable ball?
b. Where on the course can you declare a ball unplayable?
c. What determines if my ball is qualified to be called unplayable?
d. Do you have to identify your ball ?
e. Can you clean your ball before you drop it in the new location?
Answer: Your opponent must have learned this Rule from her husband. The correct answer is: If the ball is in the “general area” or on the putting green, the player has three options:
1. Stroke and distance, that is, going back to where the previous stroke was played
2. Dropping a ball (either the original or another ball) within two club lengths of where the original ball lies, no closer to the hole, anywhere on the course, including a bunker or the putting green
3. Drop the original or another ball “back on the line”. This means behind the spot of the original ball, keeping the spot of the original ball between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped, with no limit as to how far back the ball may be dropped
Note: All three options are for a one stroke penalty.

Although the weather delayed the start to the 2023 Super Senior Club Championship, it only prolonged the inevitable. Congratulations to George Owens for successfully defending the title. George defeated runner up John Peterson 7 and 6 in the final match. Owens got out to a two-hole lead early and would not look back. George's par on 12 would secure him the title and he was crowned once again as the Super Senior Club Champion. Congratulations George and thank you to all of our participants.
The 2023 Martha Macklin-Smith Ladies' Member-Guest was rockin' and rollin,' but only one team could be the stars! Congratulations to the 2023 champions Jeanne Beck, Susan Bell, Donnie Macon and Ellen Morey for their victory in this year's championship. Their amazing score of 18 under par was enough for a three-stroke victory over their nearest competitors. More importantly, we cannot thank you enough for an amazing two days of golf, friendship and fun! Our team of rockstars had an absolute blast with you all and can't wait to do it again next year. A huge congratulations to all of our winners and a big thank you to all who participated!
Congratulations to Bailey Allman and Rob Williams on their 2023 James G. Parke Member-Guest Championship victory! Bailey and Rob prevailed as the winners of the alternate shot championship shootout, outlasting eight other teams. After a tie on the fourth hole against the other final team, Billy and Riley Donigan, Rob Williams was the only person to hit the green on the tie-breaking pitchoff on hole one, making Bailey and Rob the champions of the 2023 James G. Parke Member-Guest. Congratulations to Billy and Riley Donigan for the great play and runners-up finish, and even more to our Champions, Bailey Allman and Rob Williams. Thank you all for your participation and cheers to a fantastic weekend of camaraderie and fun!
The 2023 W. Peyton May Junior Club Championship prevailed through the wild weather forecasts and scorching heat with some amazing golf! Our junior golfers crushed it out there and did not let the heat and humidity bother them one bit. Great playing everyone, and thank you to all our competitors for the amazing day of golf! Congratulations to our participants and a huge congratulations to the following division winners and our overall champion, Alex Rai! With this win, Alex qualifies to participate in the Richard D. Cooke Men's Club Championship. Congratulations again to everyone!
The 2023 Leo V. Kernan Ladies Member-Member had some sizzling, fantastic scores to finish off the week! Beating the heat, our ladies played some great golf and had tons of fun. And so did we! A beautiful day with tough conditions made for an exciting final round for the Richard D. Cooke Men's Club Championship. We had a lot of movement on the leaderboard as the day went on. Chris Devine would follow up his 76 in the first round with the lone score under par for the tournament at one under par 69 to take the clubhouse lead. This would move him ahead of the field and secure a three shot victory over Billy Paulson. Congratulations to all of our winners below.
Overall Champion | Chris Devine
Tom Skipper Flight | Billy Paulson
Gene Mattarre Flight | Ed Moyer
Chandler Harper Flight | Lewis Capolupo & Erik Polumbo
Walter Beckett Flight | Joe Thompson
Leo Kernan Flight | Scott Ferros
We would like to congratulate two of our very own Princess Anne Members, Michael Hays and Roger Newsom who competed in the 68th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. Michael Hays played two amazing rounds but fell short of making it to the match play portion of the event. A huge congratulations to Roger Newsom who made the match play format of the U.S. Senior Am. His two rounds of 73,72 over the first two days qualified him for the 64 player match play bracket format. Roger finished tied for second in the stroke play portion of the event, and found his way to the quarter finals in the match play portion. Roger beat his round of 64 match 5&3, his round of 32 in 20 holes, his round of 16 5&3, his quarterfinal match 1 up and would find himself in a tough battle in the semifinals where he would lose 2&1 to the eventual winner Todd White.

It couldn’t have been a more exciting weekend of professional level tennis for the 2023 Summer Open Tournament benefiting An Achievable Dream. Four PACC Members (Barrett Foster, Charles Hobbs, Joseph Hobbs and Ashton Legum) as well as our beloved pro, Martin Black, got to mix it up with some of the best tennis players we’ve ever seen on our courts. In the end, the $5,000 winner’s check went to VCU’s brothers Charles and Maxence Bertimon. They beat Stefan and Boris Kozlov, who received $2,500, by the score 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. A huge thanks to all of our sponsors, committees, An Achievable Dream's staff, and all of our Members that generously offered their homes to house players for the weekend. The final donation to An Achievable Dream totaled $70,914.

Are you looking to add some offense to your doubles game? Poaching is a great way to keep your opponents guessing, mix things up and not be flat footed at the net.
If you are at the net when your partner is serving, you are the offensive weapon up there and are responsible for helping them hold serve. Being able to move across the net and cut the ball off is a crucial part of achieving this. Tennis is a game of anticipation and surprising your opponent as often as possible and, particularly in doubles, there is no better way to do this than poaching!
First things first, let’s define poaching. When playing doubles, the point starts with two players at the net and two at the back of the court (one serving and one returning). A poach is when a net player moves across the middle to their partner’s side of the court, intercepts the return that was meant for their partner and puts away the volley. This is an effective tactic if your opponents have a tendency to hit a higher and softer ball around the middle of the court, as the net player can cut it off and put the ball away quickly and efficiently. Not only does this win the point with fewer shots, but also casts a seed of doubt in the opponent’s head. Generally speaking, doubles is played on the cross-court; however, if an opponent knows that if they don’t hit a high-quality ball there is a chance the net player will cut across and put away an easy volley, the opponent is immediately under pressure.
• Not every ball in the rally will be the right opportunity to move across and knock off the volley, so understanding when to and not to poach is important.
• Being on your toes and always moving will help you stay alert as a net player. This ensures you are primed and ready to pounce when a higher, slower ball is hit.
• If your opponent opens up their racket face to hit a slice, is off balance, is moved outside of the doubles lines, or is jammed up, it is a good time to think about moving across to poach.
• Any opportunity to exploit a slower, higher ball should be taken. The idea here is to punish your opponents for dropping their intensity, putting extra pressure on them to come up with the goods all the time.
The next part of poaching in doubles to consider is the movement itself. Whilst the aim is to move across the middle of the court to cover more real estate, it is also important to move forward at the same time. Moving forward as well as sideways (in a diagonal direction), ensures that you are closing the net down, cutting off the angles, and adding more power to your volley through forward momentum.
What’s more, moving forward is also subconsciously intimidating for your opponents, particularly the opposing net player. This is because out of the corner of their eye they will see you moving towards them, looking to put away a volley aggressively. Naturally, most players will then move back for self-preservation purposes, giving you even more space to volley into.
Once you are in position and have the right ball on your racket, you have got to hit into space. This may sound like a simple tip, but given how many other elements go into timing the right poach, it can sometimes escape the net player’s mind to actually place the volley away from the opponents.
Hitting to the feet of, or behind, the opposing net player can be a great tactic, as there is plenty of court to hit into and it will be a very difficult shot for your opponent to return, if they get a racket on it at all. Not to mention, they won’t have as much time to react.
If you start poaching every point, your opponents will likely spot this and start passing you down the line. Fainting one way and then coming back is a great way to get your opponent to play right into your hands as they see you move early and try to pass you down the line. It is important not to poach so much that your opponents can read you like a book. Make sure you’re helping your team win!

Princess Anne Country Club - Use your personal fitness tracker or phone to track your daily steps At the end of every day,
The sun is going down earlier and the heat of the summer is almost over, however, it won’t be long now before we bring an end to pool season at PACC. I hope that all of you have felt like the pool team has lived up to your expectations. If we did not, you should make every effort to let me, the pool team or the Pool Committee Members know where we failed to make this season one of the best for you and your family! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the lifeguard team for their commitment to a safe pool environment throughout the season.
Thank you to the leadership of our coaching team. Katie Lorenz and our diving team has enjoyed much success. With their efforts, we were able to host three home meets. Their season culminated in the PACC Diving Invitational. Congratulations to the dive coaches, parents and divers for such a wonderful season.
Our swim coaches, Bryan Rudolph, Chris Hakim, Madeline Johnson and Camille Weiss also had a wonderful season with 128 swimmers representing the PACC Breakers competing in the Porpoise Division. The swimmers had a great season with many personal bests and team records. Our swimmers also competed well at the Divisional meet finishing sixth overall.
Ten of our swimmers qualified for the All-Star Meet. Two of our swimming records were broken this summer by Vaughn Cutchins with a new time of 37.97 in the 14 & Under 50m Breaststroke and Liza Cutchins with a time of 33.14 in the 12 & Under 50m Butterfly. As you will see from our records board in the Breakers breezeway, these records are getting harder to best. Please join me in congratulating our swimmers and coaches for all of their hard work and dedication this season.
In closing, I would like to thank all of the families that supported PACC Breakers this season; with special thanks to everyone who volunteered to help with scoring, judging, and timing. I would also like to extend our gratitude to our team sponsors who gave generously to help maintain a high-quality swimming and diving program. Lastly, I would like to thank the Pool Committee for all of their support, advice and tireless efforts supporting all of the activities at the pool this summer.
Even though the school year is upon us, we are still open for adult swimmers throughout September and open weekends for the general membership and their guests. Make a note of the dates and times for September, as they are listed in this publication, and come on out to the pool for some relaxation. Remember, our pool is heated and the warm water might be just the thing to help bring an end to those great days of summer!
