FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Princeton Academy Community, As I begin my journey as the second headmaster of Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, I am more inspired by and affirmed of our mission than ever. Guided by our Sacred Heart Goals, we are equipping our boys with the skills that they will need to succeed in a dynamic world that needs them now, and a moral compass that will allow them to navigate as “leaders of a just society." Time spent getting to know the people, the sacred spaces and the history of our school has fueled me to begin developing our shared vision for the future of Princeton Academy. One look at our boys in action and it is obvious that something wonderful is happening here. In addition to celebrating our boys, honoring our alumni and showcasing our faculty and staff, this issue of PASHPort contains our Annual Report of Giving. In the spirit of gratitude that we instill in our boys through our signature Friday Thank Yous, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed over the life of our school to make Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart the best place for boys to learn and grow. I, like many of us, have come to a Princeton Academy that
Life faces you with courageous challenges at every step of the way. You are on the path, exactly where you are meant to be right now,‌ and from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, of love. -Janet Erksine Stuart, RSCJ
resides on a beautiful 50-acre campus equipped with 21st century intentionally designed learning spaces, a premier Chapel Library for boys and sacred spaces throughout campus. With foresight, we have built our campus to be one of the most sustainable campuses in all of Princeton. Through the investment of a community of deeply committed individuals, we have come a long way since our founding 17 years ago. Our powerful mission has guided us and will continue to do so as we launch into the future. At its core, Princeton Academy has empowered boys to soar with joy and will do so forever. Let us find strength in our history, inspiration in our vision, purpose in our mission and hope in our boys. As Abraham Lincoln once said, "The best way to predict your future is to create it." As one community, we move forward into tomorrow supported by a timeless foundation. Be inspired - the future is bright!
Adsurgere cum gaudio Soar with joy,
Alfred F. Dugan, III Headmaster
FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Princeton Academy Community, During the last few months, Princeton Academy has experienced much change. The most significant change was bidding farewell to our Founding Headmaster Olen Kalkus, and welcoming our new Headmaster, Alfred “Rik” Dugan. Rik has embraced our community, our Sacred Heart values and our traditions. Under Rik’s leadership, Princeton Academy will continue its mission to develop young men “with active and creative minds, a sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs.” Morning Handshake and Friday Thank Yous will live on. While tied to our roots and history, we are mindful that all institutions must evolve. A change in leadership brings the school new opportunities to build upon its strengths. Rik has brought positive energy and a fresh perspective. He has undertaken a comprehensive review of all aspects of our institution, informed by discussions with all members of our community. Changes have already begun to improve our boys’ experiences. These changes have already begun to strengthen our core values and tradition of academic excellence. As we anticipate the launch of the annual giving campaign, The Fund for Princeton Academy, I am pleased to report to you that the 2015-2016 Board of Trustees has already achieved 100% participation for this fund, as did last school year’s Board. We are off to a strong start, due in no small part to the enthusiasm and excitement of a new chapter of Princeton Academy's history. I hope that you will choose to make an early, meaningful gift to the Fund and partake in the excitement! On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our administration, faculty and staff for their dedication and tireless work educating our boys. I would also like to thank our parent community for their many gifts of time and treasure - whether serving as a class parent, making a Fund gift, or chaperoning a field trip - that help make Princeton Academy the special place that it is for our boys.
Sincerely,
Ken Harlan Chair of the Board of Trustees
We are off to a strong start, due in no small part to the enthusiasm and excitement of a new chapter of Princeton Academy's history.

GAIL MORFORD: THE "NATURALS" Art Teacher Gail Morford has been invited to create a student exhibit at The Olivia Rainbow Gallery of the D&R Greenway Land Trust. The art exhibit will enliven the memory of the late Olivia Kluenner, the nature and art-loving four year old for whom the gallery was named. Given the opportunity to craft her own nature-oriented theme, Mrs. Morford chose to highlight Sacred Heart Goal II: to educate to a deep respect for intellectual values. Students in her art class develop aesthetic values and creative use of their imagination. Also, consistent with Goal III, the Academy teaches boys to respect creation and to be stewards of Earth's resources. In order to cultivate aesthetic
awareness of the natural world, the boys are encouraged to perceive beauty directly. Before working with art materials, the boys climb a tree on campus, observing beauty in the intricate details of the leaves and feeling the texture of the bark. The learning process emphasizes the importance of thinking, planning and reflection in creating original artworks. Mrs. Morford decided to present both two and three dimensional leaf artwork created by students in Grades 5 and 6. Under her guidance, students included pink in their creations in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The colorful fall exhibit will be open October 13 through November 24.
The Naturals leaf exhibit will be open October 13 through November 24.

Years ago, when I was hired as the lacrosse coach at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, I did not know that I was about to embark on a journey that would offer me spiritual growth and fulfillment as an educator. When I first walked into the halls of our school, I knew that this institution was different than any other school I had experienced before, both as a teacher and a student. At the time I couldn’t quite pinpoint what that difference was. Was it the way each athlete courteously remarked “thanks coach” upon leaving the playing field after practice? Was it the considerate, devoted and talented faculty who viewed Princeton Academy as not just a teaching job, but rather a place to help shape the minds of young men to be positive contributors to society? Was it the support of the amiable parent community
who encouraged the faculty and staff every step of the way? The truth is, I began my Sacred Heart journey the minute I stepped onto the campus, even though I was unaware of it at the time. Upon reflecting on my career, perhaps the most essential milestone in my Sacred Heart journey was when I was appointed to the dual roles of the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG) Steering Committee Chair and Keeper of the Flame. For those who may not be aware, SHCOG is a cyclical five year internal reflection on how Princeton Academy lives the Goals and Criteria. The Keeper of the Flame is the person who is tasked with keeping the mission of Sacred Heart education at the forefront of the school conversation. As “Keeper," my focus has been to educate and discuss the Goals and Criteria with faculty and staff through the facilitation of activities such as Sacred Heart Tournaments and pop-quizzes on the Founding Mothers. I have recognized that my position has helped to further my understanding as an educator, a person and as a father. The combination of all three of these roles only proved to strengthen my passion for, and knowledge of, Sacred Heart education, traditions and history. They have also opened new doors for me within the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. The highlight of my Sacred Heart journey occurred just recently as I have accepted a position as a member of the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals. On this committee, comprised of Sacred Heart educators, administrators, RSCJ, and community members, my role “is to provide a system of accountability for the Society’s mission in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools as expressed in the Goals and Criteria.” This committee oversees the SHCOG process within the Network schools by reviewing SHCOG reflections and taking part in school visits. I am deeply honored to have been appointed to such a worthwhile position within the Sacred Heart Network. Most importantly, this position will propel me on my Sacred Heart journey which will ultimately make me a better teacher, father

Sustainability & Stewardship at Princeton Academy ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT CAMPUSES IN PRINCETON Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart recently completed the installation of more than 700 solar panels that will provide the campus with electricity from a renewable source. This green initiative helps reduce the School’s carbon footprint as well as emissions, and classifies Princeton Academy as one of the most energy efficient campuses in the Princeton area. “Since its founding in 1999, Princeton Academy has been committed to environmentally sustainable design that reduces the school’s carbon footprint," said Headmaster Rik Dugan. “This solar project is just one of several initiatives we have undertaken in the past few years.” In 2013, Princeton Academy completed a $12 million renovation to the interior of its academic and administrative spaces, which included the digging and installation of 40 geothermal wells - providing its students with a more environmentally conscious learning environment. The geothermal installation was the cornerstone project of the renovation and built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. Thirty of the school’s 50-acre campus consist of a meadow where several species of animals reside, and is mowed only twice a year to preserve their natural habitat. Princeton Academy also maintains a geodesic dome (greenhouse) that requires no man-made heating input. The McPherson Athletic and Convocation Center (MACC) was partially built into the ground to take advantage of passive
geothermal heat transfer. A COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE OF THE ACADEMY Dugan explains, “With a long-term goal of net zero energy consumption, it takes a team effort to maintain diligence in this responsibility. Our students, faculty and staff are very aware of the part they play.” Dugan points to the 2013 installation of water fountains outfitted to fill reusable water bottles, which were a gift to everyone on campus when the renovations were complete. “The fountains each have a register that displays the number of plastic water bottles saved as a result of using the reusable bottles. To date we have saved nearly 40,000 plastic bottles. Our boys are very proud of this accomplishment – and are well hydrated!”

baseball Head Coach - Paul Clewell
For the second straight year, the Princeton Academy Baseball Team finished with a record of 7-2. The team was led by a great group of eighth graders who will be missed next year not only for their play, but also their leadership. This group had a combined record of 14-4 over the past two years, which is a school record in baseball. Every game, somebody on the team, no matter the grade, was ready to step up and make a big play in the field, up at bat, on the bases or on the mound. It really was a team effort all year long. The team had some great wins this year over the likes of PDS, Hun, Rutgers Prep and Moorestown Friends. Coaches Clewell, Johnson and Speidel will miss the graduating eighth graders next year, but look forward to the younger players stepping up next season.
tennis Head Coach - Linda Hogancamp
The Tennis Team started out with a strong win against Pingry. Keeping the momentum, we won the next two matches. Unfortunately, our winning streak was halted when we met up with PDS in the middle of April and suffered a 4-2 loss. The team turned it right around, however, and won the rest of its matches, including a rematch with PDS. Many of those match wins came in the form of "come-back” wins. The perseverance these young men had on the court was remarkable! The final record for the season was 7-1. Coaches Franke and Hogancamp were most proud of the sportsmanship of these young men. As one of our opposing coaches put it, “We never mind playing your school because your boys are all so kind, even when they win a match by a large margin.” With much of the team graduating this year, we look forward to rebuilding the team next year.

lacrosse Head Coach - Matt Trowbridge Though certainly a rebuilding year, with much of the experience coming from younger players, Princeton Academy Lacrosse had a good season. Possibly the most noteworthy aspect of this team was their ability to share the ball and spread the field. To this end, we had eleven different players with goals this season – a team record! At our best, the team worked together for all four quarters and showed the tremendous potential and determination of experienced players as well as that of up and coming players who were new to lacrosse this year. Coaches Trowbridge and Stevens will miss the leadership of the graduating eighth grade and look forward to other players stepping up next year.

Charles Volkwein Discovers the Power of Humanity & Empathy in India
SPOTLIGHT
As a rising senior at The College of the Holy Cross, I participated in the college’s first-ever study abroad program in Bangalore, India. Two Holy Cross professors and eight students were immersed in this “May-mester” program into the culture of this unique and vibrant city. The aim of the program was to directly engage with social and ethical issues plaguing India, using a threepronged approach that involved academic study, fieldwork and personal reflection. While in India, we had the special opportunity to reside at the Indian Social Institute (ISI), a Jesuit-run think tank of sorts. ISI publishes academic papers on human rights, religious and ethnic tensions and a variety of specific topics concerning the treatment of marginalized individuals throughout Indian society. We had regular seminars that focused on particular social justice issues, ranging from the burgeoning IT industry, women’s rights, Indian political economic history, religious
diversity, public health and infrastructure, and the effects of the caste system. For each of these seminars, we had guest lecturers who ranged from lawyers to public health workers to professors, each an expert in his or her own area of study. One of the most valuable parts of the trip was my work in the field at a leprosy/HIV rehabilitation and educational center known as Sumanahalli (www.sumanahalli.net). My time there was transformational. I worked at the local school, serving children of families affected by leprosy and HIV as well as of families of Bangalore’s largest slum, right next door. This was the most powerful part of the trip, as I became a first grade teacher to 30 children, grappling with ways to engage with my students and to bridge the language and cultural differences that I encountered. Because the children came from the lowest caste in Indian society, and many suffered from diseases that ostracized them from their communities, interpersonal interactions in the form of touching, holding and smiling were critical. In other words, the lowest level of the caste system roughly translates into the untouchables. I discovered that, as this label implies, such individuals are typically not be touched or otherwise given the dignity that a human deserves. While I was teaching, or playing with the children on the playground, they would have the incessant need to touch me or hold on to me. I realized that there was a tremendous amount of importance to allowing this to happen, even at the expense of my personal space, as it signaled my recognition of their dignity as human beings. I learned that corporal punishment is still used in schools and that school children often act out against each other in surprisingly violent ways. I took it upon myself to instill in my students the concepts of not fighting and keeping hands to oneself. This was an immensely difficult task, but after much repetition I was successful in teaching my kids to not fight: by crossing their arms and repeating “no fighting, no fighting."

“All of these important moral virtues are directly linked to the ones I learned as a young student at Princeton Academy.”

While I was at first skeptical as to whether or not they truly understood the meaning of this move, I was delighted to see several of my students repeating the phrase and hand gestures, eventually getting the others to do the same. I realized then that the impact I had on these students as their temporary teacher could not be measured in how many English sentences I had them write, or how many multiplication tables they were able to do, but by acting as a role model for good behavior and instilling lessons of respect and dignity. All of these important moral virtues are directly linked to the ones I learned as a young student at Princeton Academy. I found myself drawing many parallels between lessons I learned there and those that I tried to convey to my students. Overall, the trip was a truly amazing experience for me on several levels. On the one hand, it was a chance to become immersed in a culture and society
radically different than my own in a very raw and unscripted manner. On the other hand, it allowed me to personally reflect on what it means to be an individual and how my background and cultural upbringing has shaped who I am today. Lastly, I realized that sometimes the best learning is experienced in the most unconventional settings; be it with a group of school children, or on the floor of a humble home in a slum. I discovered that in many of these seemingly difficult and dark places, there existed the most hospitable and compassionate people I have ever met. Charles Volkwein, a member of the Class of 2008, is a senior at the College of the Holy Cross and is majoring in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies. He is also captain of the men's tennis team and plays jazz piano whenever possible. Charlie was in Mrs. Kazi's very first kindergarten class at Princeton Academy.

I still have fond memories of Mrs. Humora’s science class, and the days of independent science projects. It’s those experiences that exercised the thirst for questioning and problem solving that continues to push me to think outside the box.” After Princeton Academy, Carter went on to the Lawrenceville School. ALUMNI GATHERED FOR THE 2ND ANNUAL ALUMNI VS. FACULTY SOFTBALL GAME
TURNING THE PAGE Dear Princeton Academy Community, Just as I look back on old school portraits of my children and wonder where the time went, so too have I looked back on this past school year and marveled about how things have changed in mere months! This time last year the Board was in the midst of a search for a new headmaster and making plans to make sure we bid a proper and heartfelt goodbye to our founding headmaster. Princeton Academy accomplished both of those things through a wide net of support from you, our parents, alumni parents, alumni, and friends. Last fall and spring, we christened existing buildings with new names - the McPherson Athletic and Convocation Center and Kalkus House - which signaled a commitment to hold close those who transformed our school into what it is today. As we began to wind down the Building For Our Boys capital campaign, we spoke often about what has been achieved at Princeton Academy through hard work and dedication to the school’s mission and vision. The commitment of longtime believers in the school, like Founding Headmaster Olen Kalkus, transformed our school over the years. We took multiple opportunities last year to thank Olen for his vision and leadership, culminating in a Gala event like none other in the school’s history. Along the way over $325,000 was raised in honor of Olen, designated for Building for Our Boys. In the spring, we delighted in the introduction of a new headmaster, Rik Dugan,
As we begin a new chapter at Princeton Academy, I encourage you to renew your commitment to the mission and vision of our school. Be inspired by Rik and the team he has assembled.
whose seemingly bottomless energy and passion for our school impressed and inspired everyone who met him. A wonderful new page has been turned in the story of Princeton Academy. Though Rik assumed leadership of a remarkable group of educators, he has brought us impressive new faces too. Our boys will be the beneficiaries of this dedication to Princeton Academy. While last year certainly signaled the turning of a page, the rest of the story is yet unwritten. I, for one, cannot wait to see what’s next. I hope you are as enthralled as I am!
Thank you for your support of, and belief in, Princeton Academy,
Alyson M. Landers Development Committee Chair

The Acorn Legacy Society was organized to honor the individuals and families who have chosen to include Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart in their estate plans. Members of the Acorn Legacy Society have expressed the highest form of charitable support for the Academy’s mission. The Acorn Legacy Society takes its name from the beauty of our campus, and from the nature of our mission. The symbol of the Society comes from the bas-relief of an oak tree directly over the Manor House entrance. At the foot of the oak tree are acorns, the small seeds that over many years grow into solid oaks when they find fertile ground. At Princeton Academy, the Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart tradition provide a rich soil that continues to yield “young men who, when faced with the challenges of their times, will make the right decisions.” If you are interested in including Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart in your estate plans, please visit our website at www.princetonacademy.planyourlegacy.org
Inspired Giving Elliot Williams
Elliot Williams '06 joined the Princeton Academy family as a fourth grader. As a student he recalls how his teachers inspired him, "Several teachers were helpful to me in so many ways. Kathy Humora and others inspired me to love what I was learning. Princeton Academy was great at helping me lay a strong foundation. I discovered that when I was challenged, I wanted to work hard."
Elliot attended The Hill School, and he is currently a fifth year graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is pursuing a MA in Electrical Engineering with a focus in the field of circuits. His goal is to become a professor. When asked about why he gave to the Academy he said, "I’ve been very fortunate, and I’m in a really good place. Princeton Academy laid the foundation for that, and I wanted to give back. Of all the schools I’ve attended, Princeton Academy needs and deserves the support. I hope the school continues to come into its own and grow to its optimal size...never losing its small school personality!”

Planning your gift to
Princeton Academy OF THE SACRED HEART As a charitable contribution, your gift to Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart is afforded tax benefits according to the type of donation you make. We recommend consulting with your tax advisor to discuss which option can bring you and your family the most lasting satisfaction. Careful planning of your gift to Princeton Academy can help to maximize your contribution to the School, and to realize your personal goals. Gifts can be made in several ways: Gifts of Cash qualify for a charitable deduction in the year given, up to a limit of 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Matching Gifts are an excellent way to increase the amount of your gift. Check with your employer to see if they offer matching giving to qualified institutions. Gifts of Appreciated Securities held for more than one year permit a donor to claim the full value of the securities at the time of donation as a tax deduction, while avoiding the capital gains that would be imposed if the securities were sold. Gifts of Property, including residence, farm, vacation home, jewelry, art, etc., provide significant benefits to the school and to the donor. The specialized help of appraisers and tax advisors is necessary to make such a gift. Gifts of Life Insurance can provide a way to make a sizable gift at a relatively low cost. Again, consulting with your attorney or tax advisor is important. Bequests and Life Payment Plans are excellent ways to support the school at levels you might not ordinarily consider. These gifts include a bequest in one’s will as well as various trust instruments. Bequests and Life Payment Plans directed to Princeton Academy qualify the donor for membership in The Acorn Legacy Society. The main consideration in making any type of gift to the Academy is to find a way that best fits you and your family. Please contact the Development Office with any questions, (609) 924-8148.

Gifts to the Endowment An endowment is a permanent fund from which only earned income is spent; the principal is invested under the guidance of the Board of Trustees. Funds come to the endowment through gifts designated for that purpose by donors, and through unrestricted capital gifts that the trustees designate for endowment. In addition to the Academy’s general endowment fund, Princeton Academy welcomes donations to any of the following named endowment funds: The Marian E. Baglyos Endowment for Financial Assistance was established in 2009 by an anonymous faculty member at Princeton Academy to honor the commitment and love of students that Mrs. Baglyos demonstrated during her 44 years as a middle school teacher. The fund is intended to support the headmaster's discretionary financial assistance budget at Princeton Academy. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Edward M. Deng Endowment for Math and Science Education was established in 2009 to support excellence in the study and teaching of mathematics and science at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Family Memorial Endowment was established in 2007 as a fund to honor parents and grandparents who have provided direction and inspiration. The fund was established by the family of former trustee Mark Johnson, and welcomes gifts of any size in thanksgiving for the lives and examples of parents, grandparents, family members, and friends. The Edward R. Farley, Jr., Memorial Athletic Fund was established in 2007 to support the activities of the athletic program. The fund was established by Harold W. McGraw, Jr. in memory of Mr. Farley, a longtime supporter and beloved Princeton Academy grandparent. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Fullerton Endowment for Faculty Development was established in 2006 by Karen and Brian Fullerton to support faculty education and encourage excellence in teaching. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Kalkus Family Library Fund was established in 2005 to support new acquisitions for Princeton Academy's library. The fund was established by the friends and family of Founding Headmaster Olen Kalkus. The Kalkus Family Library Fund was the first named fund at Princeton Academy. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Mario J. Laurenti '03 Endowment for Financial Aid was established in 2014 by the grandmother of Mario J. Laurenti, a member of Princeton Academy's first Middle School graduating class. The fund is intended to help assure the economic, ethnic and geographic diversity of the Academy's student body by providing a secure base of financial aid for students in need. The Robert A. Monsour Endowment for Technology was established in 2009 by members of the Board of Trustees to honor Bob's extraordinary leadership and service during his tenure as board member, capital campaign chair, board chair, and webmaster. The fund welcomes new gifts of any size. The Richard Stobaugh Fund was established in 2008 to help maintain the Academy's physical plant. The fund was established by an anonymous donor "as a show of gratitude to Mr. Stobaugh for his many years of service as Head of Lower School. He has shaped Princeton Academy, benefiting both current and future students." The fund welcomes new gifts of any size.

PAPA Updates new presidents Princeton Academy Parent Association (PAPA) had a successful 20142015 year of fundraising and hosting of events to benefit our boys and strengthen the school community. PAPA sponsored LS and MS cultural events and library author visits, which were all well received. New holiday traditions were introduced - "Trunk or Treat" at Halloween and an all LS Valentine's Day celebration which included a service component (making cards for the residents of St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Hospital in Lawrenceville as well as a Cub Scout-led book collection for a public library in need).
(from l to r) Michelle Burgess, Elizabeth Seruma and Rebecca Plimpton with their sons
PAPA also continued to provide ways for our PASH community to support and serve others through the sponsorship of a student at our Sacred Heart sister school in Uganda. In addition, the first Service Night was held and families joined together to complete a variety of service projects to benefit the greater community. A special thank you to the 2014-2015 Class Parents, whose time, service and dedication on behalf of our boys made the year a success!
On the outset of the 2015-2016 academic year, we bade farewell to Elizabeth Seruma, who has successfully served as president for two years. Elizabeth's dedication and commitment to the community continues to inspire. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as a PAPA officer for a number of years and as president for the last two years. I am so grateful for meeting and working with so many wonderful people for the benefit of these awesome boys," remarked Elizabeth. "I look forward to PAPA's future with CoPresidents Michelle Burgess and Beck Plimpton. They bring experience, commitment, thoughtfulness and a sense of dedicated service to the role. I wish them and all of PAPA the very best!" For more information about PAPA events please visit the school website and look out for The Squawk, the PAPA e-newsletter.
