Elementary Entering grades 1 – 5
Elementary SummerQuest offers an exciting array of opportunities for children entering grades one through five at Princeton Montessori School’s state-of-the-art facility. Each session is centered around a unique theme that will spark the child’s imagination and curiosity, and a specific sport. Learning takes place with hands-on activities, outdoor fun, arts, crafts, field trips, special events, and swimming lessons at the Princeton YWCA. SummerQuest memories last a lifetime. Whether one session or the entire summer, give your child a Summer they will never forget!
The Science of Flight Firefly Tennis and Swimming
Session Q June 18-July 2
Ever wonder how those heavy airplanes fly? Children will fly “high in the sky” this summer with an in-depth study of aerodynamics and flight. Our junior pilots will enjoy hands-on learning about scientific flight principles and facts such as lift, thrust, drag, weight, airfoil, air pressure, Bernoulli’s principle and more. Exciting activities are planned using balloons, paper airplanes, kites, gliders, helicopters, as well as observing flight in nature, to offer children an appreciation of the miracle of flight. A visit to the Princeton airport is sure to add to the excitement! Session includes weekly swimming instruction at the YWCA in Princeton. Afternoons will be spent learning basic skills of playing tennis with Firefly Tennis Program three afternoons per week.
Gears, Gadgets and Things that Move
Session R July 7-18
Motion Gymnastics and Swimming
Future engineers and physicists invited! The children will build, experiment, discuss and evaluate scientific principles in action as they design and build simple machines like race cars, windmills, pulleys, cranes and simple robots. Our gadgets will be creatively built by using wood, LEGO and K’NEX. Research shows that this type of hands-on learning encourages children of all learning styles and abilities to develop ownership of the essential knowledge and innovative thinking expected of elementary students in our rapidly changing world. Give your child the opportunity to hone their problem solving and communication skills while learning about the principles of basic engineering and simple machines, and having fun! Session includes weekly swimming instruction at the YWCA in Princeton and three afternoons per week learning gymnastics basics, taught by Motion Gymnastics, Pennington, NJ.
Detective Quest
Session S July 21-August 1
Tae Kwon Do and Swimming
Do you like to uncover clues? Follow leads? Solve mysteries? If you are curious, like to ask why, are a good listener, and can really pay attention to details, then this SummerQuest session is for you! Learn the art of becoming a detective through fun and interesting activities about fingerprint analysis, developing ciphers and cracking codes. Research has shown that learning about methods of investigation and gadgets, collecting evidence at a crime scene, and studying evidence in a laboratory helps improve children’s abilities to apply logical thinking in different situations and find solutions to problems. In this session, children will make observations, follow clues and use deductive reasoning to solve The Case of the Missing Guinea Pig and The Case of the Disappearing Snack. In addition, we will document our cases by creating our very own I Spy books using photos from our school environment. Session includes weekly swimming instruction at the YWCA in Princeton. We will also learn the fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do taught by Princeton Martial Arts Center three times per week.
Outdoor Adventurer
Biking and Swimming
Session T August 4-15
Have you ever wondered how to use a compass? Or, how to build a fire without a match? Children will play and explore as they become “Outdoor Adventurers” during this session. Our young naturalists will learn to rely on and hone their five senses as they explore some amazing aspects of the natural world. Riding a bicycle is a wonderful way for children to feel free and enjoy summer days. Do you remember playing in the “great outdoors” as a child? For a wide range of reasons, today’s children are simply not experiencing as much active play time as their parents did. In fact, a new term is used to describe this trend; it’s called “nature deficit disorder” (Richard Louv, 2008). Session includes weekly swimming instruction at the YWCA in Princeton. In the afternoons, we will enjoy team building activities and cooperative adventures as we learn to bike or hone our existing skills. (Riding skills are not required for this session. Children will need to have a bicycle in working condition to bring to the session.)
