WELCOME

T

hank you for joining us for Beyond Words 2020. We are delighted to present to you a thought-provoking series of virtual speakers addressing critical issues that reflect the programming of the Princeton Public Library. A special thank you to HarperCollins Publishers for enabling us to have such intellectually stimulating conversations. There is no way the founders of the Friends of the Princeton Public Library back in 1961 could have predicted what 2020 would have in store for us. But the general notion that the Princeton Public Library needed support from the public to expand its collections, enhance its programming and support its staff, is truer now more than ever. Loyal and generous support from you, our donors, has enabled the Friends to continue its support for 59 years. In these unusual times, the library’s role as a center of our community has continued to expand, as has the importance of the Friends’ support. Beyond Words 2020 is a true community event, from our partnership with Labyrinth Books and our Food for Thought partners to our local dignitaries who will help facilitate our engaging conversations each night. We hope you have enjoyed reading our speakers’ books and that your Beyond Words experience will include a delicious take-away meal from one of our 10 Food for Thought partners. Our individual and corporate sponsors continue to demonstrate their generous commitment to the Princeton Public Library, even in the challenging times in which we find ourselves. For all of this and more, thank you for being a Friend. Dina Shaw, Beyond Words 2020 Co-chair Mel Grzymala, Beyond Words 2020 Co-chair Andrea Bradley, Friends Council President p.s. If you are interested in joining the Friends Council, please contact us at friends@princetonlibrary.org.We would love to have you! 3

In 2014 he was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in the state of South Carolina. Sellers is a CNN political analyst and was recently named to Time magazine’s “40 Under 40 list. He is also a practicing attorney who fights to give a voice to the voiceless. U.S. Rep. WE REMEMBER

Mayor Reed in a scene from the 2004 library-produced video “Let’s Go to the New Library.”

M

arvin Reed served as the mayor of Princeton Borough from 1990 to 2003. Through his vision and initiative, Princeton Public Library maintained its position as a cornerstone of the downtown, accessible to all of Princeton through the development of a parking garage adjacent to the library and a beautiful plaza for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to our town. It was in large part because of Mayor Reed’s work with Leslie Burger, the executive director of the library at the time, and Board of Trustees President Harry Levine that the Sands Library Building is the amazing space in which we read, work and learn today and why it is truly the heart of our community. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mayor Reed’s passion for the town and for our library, and pay tribute to his lifelong commitment to public service. —The Friends of Princeton Public Library 25

jaZams would like to thank the staff of the PPL Youth Services Department for their dedication to the literacy, health and well-being of all the children in our community. Their tireless work can be seen and celebrated on the third floor each and every day. Every Autumn we get to work with these wonderful folks for what many feel is the nation’s premier book festival for kids. We could not be more honored to work with a better group of people. Thank you Susan, Mimi, Caroline, Katie, Amanda, Martha, and Marissa. You are the best! 26

2021 FRIENDS EVENINGS Jan. 25, 2021, 7 p.m. via Zoom “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Message For Our Own” Featuring Eddie S. Glaude Jr., James S. McDonnell Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University. Professor Glaude is a frequent commentator on MSNBC. Sponsored by Kiki Jamieson and Will Dove In “Begin Again,” Professor Glaude examines James Baldwin’s world and how it is reflected in the present. Like Baldwin, Glaude argues, we live in the “after times”: in Baldwin’s case, of the Civil Rights Movement; and in our times by the Black Lives Matter movement. Just as Baldwin watched America respond to the murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., America has responded to the murder of George Floyd with massive protests. “Begin Again” is a fierce work that combines biography and history to make an argument that we stand on the precipice of a decision about who we are as a country that will reverberate for decades. All participants will receive a copy of “Begin Again.”

Jan. 30, 2021, 11 a.m. via Zoom (90 minutes) Restoring Civility and Bringing Social Justice to American Life: A virtual brunch and talk Featuring Richard Cordray, former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Ralph Nader, political activist, former presidential candidate and now-cookbook author in conversation with Carl Mayer, leading consumer advocate for NJ. Special guest Andy Shallal, founder of restaurant Busboys and Poets, will prepare dishes from Nader’s recently released cookbook. This special event features four lifelong advocates for consumer protections. Carl Mayer will lead a conversation with Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under President Obama, and political activist Ralph Nader as they share their vision of a more just, egalitarian and united America. Cordray’s new book, “Watchdog,” outlines how the bureau helped protect consumers from ill-doing by the financial services industry. Nader’s latest book, “The Nader Family Cookbook,” shares the cuisine of his Lebanese upbringing. Andy Shallal, founder of Busboys and Poets, a community gathering space in Washington, D.C., will prepare select dishes from Nader’s cookbook during this 90-minute discussion, where no topic will be off limits. Nader will be participating via audio only; all participants will receive copies of “Watchdog: How Protecting Consumers Can Save Our Families, Our Economy, and Our Democracy” and Carl Mayer’s “Shakedown: The Fleecing Of The Garden State.” “The Nader Family Cookbook” is available for purchase through Labyrinth Books. 29

2021 FRIENDS EVENINGS Feb. 28, 2021, 11 a.m., via Zoom or in the Community Room at PPL The Toni Morrison Book Club Featuring Winnie Brown-Glaude, Cassandra Jackson, Juda Bennett and Piper Kendrix Williams in conversation. In this startling group memoir, four friends--black and white, gay and straight, immigrant and American-born, and all professors at the College of New Jersey--use Toni Morrison’s novels as a springboard for intimate and revealing conversations about the problems of everyday racism and living whole in times of uncertainty. Tackling everything from first love and Soul Train to police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, the authors take up what it means to read challenging literature collaboratively and to learn in public as an act of individual reckoning and social resistance. All participants will get a copy of “The Toni Morrison Book Club.”

March 21, 2021, 11 a.m., via Zoom or in the Community Room at PPL The Next 100 Years of the Universe Featuring James Peebles, Albert Einstein Professor of Science at Princeton University and 2019 Nobel Prize recipient for Physics, in conversation with Suzanne Staggs, Henry DeWolf Smyth Professor of Physics at Princeton University. Sponsored by McCaffrey’s Be witness to a conversation between two leading scientists and colleagues discussing their revolutionary and evolutionary work of trying to understand “what is out there?” With relativity passing the century mark, are the basic beliefs about the universe still valid? What is the focus for the next 100 years to further both understanding and scholarship?

ABOUT THE FRIENDS

T

he Friends of the Princeton Public Library is a volunteer organization that supports, enhances and promotes the work of the library. We engage our community, volunteer our time and talent and support the library financially. In a typical year, we contribute about $250,000 annually to support the library’s collection of books and materials. We raise these funds through ticketed events, the Friends Bookstore and book sales, sponsorships and donations. This year has been highly unusual; we are grateful for the unwavering support of our sponsors and supporters who have joined us virtually for a variety of events this year, and who have recently returned to the Friends Bookstore. Beyond Words is the highlight of our annual calendar. We also organize the Friends Evenings speaker series, usually hosted in private homes throughout the winter and spring; this year, these are virtual on Zoom. We also host the annual Book Lovers Luncheon in the spring, and a community-building event in the winter. We look forward to the day we can gather once again, at our annual book sale, or one of our popular events. Until then, there are still many ways to get involved with the Friends. If you’d like to learn how, please visit us at www.princetonlibrary.org/friends or email friends@princetonlibrary.org.
