2018 HIGHLIGHTS IN 2018, PR INC E TON P U BL IC L IBR ARY: Was featured in the NJTV “State of the Arts” story on this year’s record-setting Princeton Children’s Book Festival. Received the Mildred Trotman Community Service Award from Joint Effort Princeton and the Witherspoon Jackson Neighborhood Association and the Arts Council of Princeton’s Community Partner Award. Continued a tradition of offering respite during storms, this time for the 2,000+ residents who were left without power after a blizzard in early March. Hosted memory researcher Kenneth Norman, who delivered an outstanding Audrey and Kenneth Gould Lecture to a standingroom-only crowd. Added publications to the Papers of Princeton archive, in partnership with the Historical Society of Princeton and Princeton University. Completed a redesign of the Third Floor in order to better support early literacy, programming and other youth, family and teen needs. Added a self-pickup hold shelf to make it more convenient to reserve books. Partnered with Morven to host Alice McDermott, Labyrinth to host Mark Kurlansky, Grounds for Sculpture to present Susan Orlean, and the Hun School and Nassau Presbyterian Church to host Sonia Nazario as part of Princeton Migrations, which we organized with the Princeton University Art Museum and over 20 other area nonprofits. Teamed with the Princeton Record Exchange to offer a popular vinyl listening station as part of the Libraries Rock Summer Reading Program, which included 1,833 youth participants. Partnered with Princeton Human Services to provide a social work intern to the library for the third consecutive year. Worked with Sustainable Princeton to become the first library to join New Jersey’s Sustainable Business Registry. Was recognized by Library Journal magazine as a Five Star Library for a third year in a row. Completed a 2019-21 Strategic Plan that focuses on three areas: making books and other library materials more readily available; expanding the range of classes, lectures, events and other programs that bring people together; and expanding marketing efforts to make it easier for the public to know what is happening.

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
n my frequent visits to Princeton Public Library, I’m always amazed by the growth I see all around. From babies building pre-literacy skills in the Story Room to seniors keeping up with the latest advancements in the Technology Center, the amount of personal growth happening on an average day at the library is nothing short of remarkable. Of course, the library is for much more than babies and seniors. On any given day, I’ll see toddlers learning to read, elementary school students and teens doing homework, millennials sipping coffee while telecommuting to their jobs and other adults learning and connecting in an atmosphere where the diversity of Princeton is on glorious display. New Americans preparing for the citizenship test can be in one room, while scholars using cutting edge databases for research are in the next. It’s fitting, then, that the theme of the 2018 Report to the Community is “Growing With Princeton.” After a 2017 highlighted by the opening of the reimagined second floor, the library continued to make improvements to its physical space, with redesigns of the first and third floors. More than just rearranging the furniture, staff created spaces that meet the changing and increasing demand for enhanced library services. Princeton is a wonderful place to live, and we’ve long known that Princeton Public Library is a big part of that appeal. As more people move here — our population has grown by almost 10 percent this decade — the library will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our ever-changing community. We’ll be growing with you.
