From the

Executive Director

I

t’s hard to believe that I’ve been at the Princeton Public Library for 15 years. In just five months I will leave this institution that I love so deeply to embark on a new life adventure. During my time at the library I’ve had the pleasure of leading this organization through transformational change that has helped our community reimagine what a library means in our day to day 21st century lives. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead the library and be part of Princeton. I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished together. The stories on the following pages provide a snapshot of the changes that took place in 2013-2014 but only begin to tell the story of the Princeton Public Library. Princeton is a town that values learning, education, and community connections. We see this every day in the library when more than 2,200 people come through our doors to explore our resources and take advantage of all we have to offer. We know the world is changing quickly and that to maintain our reputation as the community’s living room we must reinvest in our future every day. In the coming months you will see significant

changes at the library – a new leader and a reimagined second floor. We couldn’t do any of this without you. Thanks to all of you who continue to support the library and the community’s investment in the future. — Leslie Burger 2

W

hen Princeton Public Library opened the doors to the Sands Library Building in April of 2004, it was to the acclaim of a grateful

community who marveled at how modern it was. Others noticed, too, most notably The New York Times, which declared Princeton Public Library “a model modern library. The library would have been forgiven if it rested on its laurels in 2004, but it did not.

3

Passion The library realized in 2004, as it does today, that in the 21st century, “modern” is a word that is redefined yearly — or even monthly. Thinking back to the world of April, 2004, consider that Facebook had just started in a dorm room at Harvard, that we were three years away from seeing the first iPhone and that Toyota Prius buyers had to wait an average of six months to get their cars. Things we take for granted in daily life and in the library — the e-book, widespread free Wi-Fi, streaming music and video — were either in their infancy or were not available.

4

Purpose

The years 2013 and 2014 can be viewed as the latest chapters in a story that started more than a decade earlier, when the library realized that to truly serve an increasingly diverse Princeton, it needed to remain flexible and adaptable, to embrace change wisely rather than chase trends, to let its mission and community values guide its decisions. The stories told in this Report to the Community are really authored by the people of Princeton, whose generous public and private support represent the difference between an adequate library of the past and the forward-thinking institution the town cherishes. 5

ransformed space on the third floor, expanded digital offerings and new program series highlighted a

busy 2013. Most of these changes were made possible through private funding. Third Floor Improvements Young people on both ends of the age spectrum benefited from upgrades to the third floor. With a generous gift from the Friends of the Library, an underutilized space originally reserved for crafts was transformed into a playroom for preschoolers and their parents, with a variety of activities to build pre-literacy skills.

When the Youth Services Department’s MacBook lending program, made possible through funds raised at the Beyond Words benefit, took off early in the year, it became apparent that changes were needed to make the Teen Center a more collaborationfriendly space. Shelving was rearranged and new, movable furniture was installed, making the space adaptable for a variety of needs while making it easier for teens to work together. Digital Initiatives With support from Princeton University, the library began offering Brainfuse, a full suite of online learning tools for all ages. Students can get real-time help with homework or feedback on writing assignments every day. Adults in career transition can get help with writing a resume and cover letter and new Americans find a wealth of information about becoming citizens. Digital magazines became easier to read for free on multiple devices when Zinio launched with 70 popular titles. Programming With a generous gift from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the monthly Spotlight on the Humanities series was launched, attracting renowned scholars such as architect Michael Graves and philosopher Gideon Rosen. In partnership with the National Association for Mental Illness, the library began a conversation about mental health culminating with an appearance by Matthew Quick, author of “The Silver Linings Playbook.” Among 2,500 other programs, highlights included an appearance by best-selling author Jhumpa Lahiri, a collaboration with the YWCA on a series of Women’s History Month events and such popular annual events as the Princeton Environmental Film Festival and the Princeton Children’s Book Festival.

Stewardship In 2013, longtime library supporter Betty Wold Johnson issued a $1 million challenge gift dedicated to library stewardship. Mrs. Johnson’s gift to renew and refresh the building was particularly timely as the Sands Library Building marked its 10th anniversary. “I agree that our wonderful library has become the living room of Princeton,” Mrs. Johnson said. “PPL is an essential resource of our community. Isn’t it a cause worth everyone’s support?” 7

2014 highlights A

ccess to high-quality digital resources grew at an unprecedented rate, with in-demand e-books and streaming

content coming to the forefront to share the affections of print-loving library customers. Programming made big strides as well, with a new focus on the creation of community forums to discuss issues of the day. Other highlights included appearances by several world-renowned authors and a summer documentary series devoted to artists. Also, new sponsors and partners were attracted to the mission of the library, extending its reach in the community.

8

Digital Initiatives The book did not disappear, nor will it ever; rather, the library discovered ways to make relevant digital content more easily available to customers. A new, Princeton-specific Overdrive e-book service replaced a shared statewide version. The change brought with it more e-books and audiobooks reflecting community tastes and a simpler borrowing procedure supported across multiple devices. As a result, the number of e-books and audiobooks borrowed soared. The library’s effort to offer more streamed content, via the Hoopla service, was an overwhelming success. Library customers now had free access to tens of thousands of movies, audiobooks and music albums available 24 hours a day to stream on all of their digital devices. In a perfect marriage of print and digital, 2014 also saw the completion of Papers of Princeton project, a partnership with Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary creating a searchable database of back issues of Town Topics and other Princeton publications. Programming Following on the success of the 2013 Princeton Reads examination of mental health, the library put a premium on issues-based programming. An event featuring Civil Rights legend Bob Moses, part of a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, spurred discussions of the status of race relations in America. This was followed by the first programs in the inaugural Currents series, which continued into 2015, examining contemporary perspectives on immigration. Worldrenowned novelists Joyce Carol Oates and ChangRae Lee returned to the library for the first time in more than a decade. Other authors of note included PEN/Hemingway winner Akhil Sharma, Alan Turing biographer Andrew Hodges and Pulitzer Prizewinning historian James McPherson.

New Sponsors NRG Energy became a co-presenting sponsor of the Beyond Words benefit. Separate sponsorships to support the Princeton Environmental Film Festival and the library’s sustainable gardening collection were agreed to by The Nature Conservancy, the Garden Club of Princeton and the Friends of Princeton Open Space for 2015. 9

Launched at the library

W

hen Bai Brands inked a distribution deal with Dr. PepperSnapple in 2013 and sales surpassed the $50 million mark the following year, it was no surprise to library staff. The company, which manufactures a variety of juice drinks made from coffee fruit, was born in the basement of Ben and Danna Weiss’s Princeton home in 2009 and incubated on the second floor of the library. Ben and Danna remember that Bai’s first organizational meeting was in the Second Floor Conference Room. Subsequent meetings were held in the Tower Room, and Ben recalls interviewing prospective employees in the first floor Quiet Room. “The facilities at the Princeton Library were surprisingly accessible for a young entrepreneur with few alternatives,” Ben said. “It provided a professional setting with a very intellectual backdrop that allowed for productive meetings and eventual company gatherings. It lent a sense of community that reminded me of the uniquely supportive marketplace that gave birth to Bai.” While Bai moved its offices to Hamilton a few years ago, Ben and Danna haven’t forgotten their Princeton roots. Bai is a sponsor of many library events, including the Beyond Words benefit, the Princeton Student Film & Video Festival and the Princeton Children’s Book Festival. Bai is the most successful brand launched at the library, but it is hardly the only one. Entrepreneurs are at the library every day, starting retail businesses and collaborating on digital projects, both for profit and for the common good. In addition to meeting space, they receive advice from community volunteers and from the information professionals at our service desks. Starting or incubating a business is second nature at the library.

B

efore historian William Rosen discussed his 2010 book “The Most Powerful Idea in the World: A Story of Steam, Industry, and Invention” (Random House) with Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” and before CSPAN came to the library to interview him for Book TV, Rosen’s book began its life at Princeton Public Library. The same is true for his two other books, “Justinian’s Flea: Plague, Empire, and the Birth of Europe” (2007; Viking) and “The Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century” (2014; Viking). A longtime Princeton resident and former book editor, Rosen can be found many weekdays at a table on the second floor, researching and writing. He is working on a new book he expects to be released in 2016. “Over the past decade, I have spent at least 2,000 days on the second floor of the Princeton Public Library, writing most of four books and dozens of articles; I even used up a few days playing hooky, reading for pleasure,” Rosen said. “My first two books were launched at events in the library’s Community Room. If there is a warmer, more welcoming place for transforming ideas into sentences, and pages into manuscripts, I have yet to hear of it.” Rosen is one of many authors whose published works were born at the library. Home to two separate monthly writing groups, abundant research materials and an annual day devoted to books by local authors, the library provides the perfect environment and resources for writers to see a work through from idea to publication. 11

Learning at the library

With its world-class university, excellent public schools and prestigious independent schools, Princeton is a center for learning, with the library as its hub. The library supports the needs of learners of all ages with a wide range of digital resources and expert advice available even when the library is closed. Students can get free homework help from community volunteers after school and at most other times from Brainfuse, an all-ages online tutoring, test prep and writing workshop. Those with private tutors can meet them in one of our collaboration rooms on the second and third floors. Whether studying the latest advances in medicine or 19th century perspectives on literature, researchers will find help though one of the library’s more than 60 subscription databases, most of which can be used at home or in an office. Our learning resources are not limited to students and researchers — in a community of lifelong learners, the library has something for everyone. If you’re starting a garden, learning a language in advance of a vacation or researching your family tree, the library will help you get to where you want to go. Here to make sense of this abundance of data are the library’s information professionals, who are available at our service desks, online through chat and by appointment. Princeton Public Library is a vital part of a community built on learning. 12

Financial Reports

How funding makes the library possible

U

nusual among New Jersey libraries, Princeton Public Library’s budget comes from a combination of tax dollars and private support. Generous gifts from our community provide 25 percent of annual operating expenses, including income from an endowment fund that generates much-needed funding and continues to grow as a result of wise investment decisions. The endowment principal increased 22 percent from Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014 at a time when tax support decreased from 77 percent to 75 percent of the total annual budget. The library’s commitment to raise funds to support special projects and ongoing expenses reflects the desire to provide extraordinary service without placing additional burdens on taxpayers.
