FALL 2011 TECHNOLOGY CENTER CLASSES All classes are taught by Princeton Public Library staff, except where indicated. Registration is required and may be completed online at www.princetonlibrary.org (click on the Events tab) or by calling 609.924.9529, ext. 220. Classes are in the second floor Technology Center. Skill Levels Basic: User knows how to turn on computer, operate a mouse, knows how to launch software. Intermediate: In addition to basic skill level, user can navigate various websites, multiple tabs, understand email applications, can download documents, music and photos.
GOOGLE + Wed., Sept. 14, 4-6 p.m. With Google+ becoming a major social networking platform within weeks of its release, it’s clear that the social Web is here to stay. This Google+ class, led by Lynette Young of Purple Stripe Productions, will provide tips and tricks that you can use to make the most of Google+ features such as Profiles, Hangouts, Circles and Sparks. Skill Level: Intermediate INTRO TO COMPUTERS Mon., Sept. 19, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (first of two classes) This is a two-week class to help novices become comfortable with the basic terminology, concepts and skills of using a computer. Skill Level: None LIST MAKING FOR JOB SEEKERS Tues., Sept. 20, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The first of three related courses, this class will cover how to use databases such as Reference USA, Infogroup OneSource and Hoovers to create lists of job leads, names of personnel and other key data needed for a job search. Learn tools useful for job searching, get company profiles and discover business opportunities in this one-hour course. This series of courses will be offered following each Tuesday Networking Breakfast. Skill Level: Basic INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Sept. 21, 6-8 p.m., (first of three classes) Learn how to use the powerful features of Excel 2007 to collect, manipulate and report data. Good mouse skills are essential. Skill Level: Basic INTRO TO COMPUTERS Mon., Sept. 26, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (second of two classes) GOOGLE FORMS Wed., Sept. 28, 4-5:30 p.m. This class covers the often-overlooked Google Forms application that allows anyone with a Google account to quickly and easily create surveys and have the results tabulated in a spreadsheet for easy gathering and sorting of data. Google Forms can also be used to collect a variety of statistical information, create a personal contacts list and much more. Skill Level: Intermediate
INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Sept. 28, 6-8 p.m. (second of three classes) LEARN ALL ABOUT AVIARY.COM Tues., Oct. 4, 3-4:30 p.m., (first of three classes) John LeMasney, manager of educational technology training and outreach at Princeton University, introduces Aviary, a suite of online creative applications accessible through your web browser. Aviary tools enhance the creativity of artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing. In this 3-part class you will learn about the Aviary Image and Effects editors, Music Creator, Podcasting editor and more. All of these tools can be used online, for free, with no downloads needed. Skill Level: Intermediate INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL 2007 Wed., Oct. 5, 6-8 p.m., (third of three classes) BE YOUR OWN TRAVEL AGENT Thursday Oct. 6, 6-7 p.m. Learn how to get the best bang for your buck when you are booking travel as well as some tips, tricks and general rules about booking online travel. Skill Level: Basic INTERNET EXPLORATIONS Mon., Oct. 10, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., (first of two classes) This course will help novice computer users become familiar with searching the Internet. Basic terminology will be covered, as well as basic search strategies. Attendees should be comfortable navigating with a mouse. Skill Level: Basic

Spread the News: PR Tips for Small Businesses and Non-profits Tues., Oct. 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Advertising and marketing are essential for getting a business noticed, but can be expensive. Hilary Morris of Hilary Morris Public Relations covers the basics of getting free publicity including press release writing and strategies for connecting with the local media. Skill Level: Basic iPAD 101 Mon., Oct. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For those with a new iPad or who just want to see what the hype is all about, this class covers what the device can do, its basic operation and some fun apps. Please provide a working email address and a minimum of five print or digital photos. Skill Level: Basic Princeton High School TWITTER 101: TWEETING FOR BEGINNERS Thurs., Oct. 27, 7-9 p.m. Princeton Public Library Staff This class is an overview of Twitter and how it can be used to track breaking news, keep up-to-date with technology, find a job or even get a free cup of coffee. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own Twitter account during one of three follow-up sessions to be held in the Princeton Public Library’s Technology Center. $25. Tues., Nov. 15, 7-9 p.m. Katie DeVito This course covers the basics of LinkedIn including how to set up an account, build a profile, build a network and find job leads. NOTE: This is a two-hour course taught at Princeton Public Library. Additional help sessions will be determined at the Nov. 15 class for those who want more support on additional dates at Princeton Public Library. Katie DeVito founded NJ Unemployed, a networking group dedicated to bringing the unemployed community together by holding educational seminars, and social events. She has appeared on CBS’s “The Early Show,” and other shows discussing unemployment, social media and starting your own business. $25.
