June, 2021 | VOLUME 6 | ISSUE 6 Eastlake High School shortstop Marcelo Mayer rounds third base after hitting home run in recent game. (Eduardo Contreras/The San Diego Union-Tribune)
MARCELO MAYER CONTINUES LEGACY OF GREAT EASTLAKE HIGH BASEBALL PLAYERS Shortstop likely to be one of top three picks in MLB Draft, could even go No. 1
By John Maffei, reprinted from The San Diego Union-Tribune
For nearly a decade, the Eastlake High baseball team — one of the most successful programs in the state — has had a common thread. From Angel Estrada, to Ben Ramirez, to Keoni Cavaco, the Titans have had a monster at shortstop. “Absolutely, I know what has gone on before me,” said Marcelo Mayer, the latest in the Eastlake shortstop lineage. “I saw Eastlake play as a kid. Ben Ramirez and Keoni Cavaco have been mentors.” Estrada hit .353 in 22 games at Cal State Dominguez Hills last season before COVID-19 shut down the season. The pandemic forced cancellation of this season for the Toros. Ramirez is a redshirt junior at USC and leads the team, hitting .310 with nine homers and 51 RBIs through 49 games. He figures to go in the top 10 rounds of the July MLB Draft. The Minnesota Twins made Cavaco the 13th pick of the 2019 draft and is playing at Fort Myers of the Florida State League. Mayer should go even higher. MLB.com has Mayer rated as the No. 1 prospect in the draft, ahead of Texas prep shortstop Jordan Lawlar, Vanderbilt right-hander Jack Leiter, Louisville catcher Henry Davis and Vanderbilt’s other right-hander Kumar Rocker. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the first pick in the draft, followed by the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers. The Rangers are said to be focused on Lawlar. The Tigers are known to covet Mayer. The Pirates have been silent. “The shortstop commands the infield,” said Mayer, who checks in at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. “You have to work hard to play shortstop, and I’m not afraid to work hard. “I started playing shortstop at a young age, LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com
and it just stuck. It’s a glove-first position, and I take a lot of pride in my defense.” Mayer, however, can also swing it. A left-handed hitter, Mayer is batting .437 through 25 games. He has 13 home runs, 40 RBIs and 39 runs scored. In 103 plate appearances, which includes 25 walks, he has struck out just three times. And he has 16 stolen bases. The school record for home runs is 15, set by Adrian Gonzalez in 2000. Gonzalez was the first pick of the 2000 draft by the Rangers. Mayer has options, though, signing to play at USC, choosing the Trojans over schools like UCLA and Arizona. “Mayer has average or above tools across the board, starting with a plus feel to hit from the left side of the plate,” said MLB.com. “He has an advanced approach and knowledge of the strike zone to go with elite bat-to-ball skills and a pure stroke. “Long and lean, there’s a lot of raw power for him to grow, with some scouts seeing a Corey Seager-like offensive profile if it all comes together. “While not a burner — some scouts have a tick above average run grades, some have fringy ones — no one doubts Mayer will be able to stay at shortstop for a long time. He has easy actions, plus hands, footwork and an arm that plays plus. “All of it plays up because of his instincts and aptitude, in a Brandon Crawford kind of way. He’s committed to USC, but as a potential first-round pick, the odds of him setting foot on campus are slim.” Asked to name the shortstops he enjoys watching, Mayer quickly clicked off Fernando Tatis Jr., Seager and Francisco Lindor. “The modern-era shortstops are more of bat-first guys,” Mayer said. “Tatis, Seager and Lindor can swing it, but also field their positions with pride. /LocalUmbrellaMedia

“I 100 percent want to stay at shortstop. As a hitter, I’ve always had power. As I’ve grown stronger, I really started to tap into that power and elevate my game.” Eastlake coach Dave Gallegos bats Mayer in the leadoff spot. “I’d rather hit third, but I understand hitting leadoff might get me an extra at-bat during a game.” Mayer said. “And after the first inning, you may not lead off an inning again. So I’m OK with it.” Eastlake is 20-6 — Mayer sat out one game after getting his COVID-19 shot — and ranked No. 3 in the county behind No. 1 Grossmont (24-4) and No. 2 San Marcos (21-4-1). “We have a really nice team,” Mayer said. “Our lineup — one through nine — is dangerous. We can all do the job. We need to finish league play strong, then the playoffs should be wild.” The Titans figure to be part of the Open Division playoffs that start June 8. “Last year, not playing a full season, was really disappointing,” Mayer said. “We had a great team, a lot of depth. I think we would have made a great run in the CIF playoffs. I was disappointed for the seniors, disappointed for the Eastlake community because we get great support.” Gallegos is one of Mayer’s biggest supporters. “We’ve had a run of great shortstops,” Gallegos said. “He was a skinny runt when he got here. But he has worked hard to get stronger, and he has grown taller. “Of all our shortstops, maybe all our players, he has the most power potential. In batting practice, we have to put a guy beyond the fence because he’ll hit 15 or 20 balls out of the park and we can’t afford to lose that many balls. He’s a special player, but he’s also a special kid, one of the best kids, leaders, teammate we’ve had here.” This article first appeared in San Diego Union-Tribune ADVERTISE | Press@LocalUmbrella.com

BALANCING MOTHERHOOD AND CAREER— THE CHALLENGE THAT SO MANY WOMEN FACE By Lulú Acosta
I remember one day waking up to my Chula Vista residence and thinking… How can I generate an income without missing out on the growth of my children? Being a Latina makes it hard for moms to choose a career because in our culture being a mom and a wife is the biggest thing and the moment that you have a career you can feel people judging you. Choosing a career with Mary Kay as an Independent Beauty Consultant was the best decision for me because I am able to take care of my family while generating an income from the comfort of my home. There were a lot of companies that tried to get my attention to sell for them. I didn’t want to get caught up with some company that didn’t have quality products nor the best interests of moms at heart. Mary Kay has been around since 1963 and is a multi-billion dollar company. I knew it was the best choice for me, and I fit right into their selling model. My Mary Kay life is so simple, yet it is so fun, and it works for me! It all started when I attended a Mary Kay leadership brunch and a national sales LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com

director gave her speech. After that, I literally got on the phone and texted my husband to give him the great news about me becoming an Independent Beauty Consultant! #MyMKlife started with the support of my beautiful Chula Vista community as I was booking skincare parties, spa parties and color confident parties. I love meeting new people and teaching them about our quality and affordable products. Some women think that you need to go to an expensive store in the mall to get the best skin care products. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Mary Kay has the best team of scientists who create products based on science and extensive testing. “Developing a formula is one part of our process. We also have to prove that it will deliver real results, and we do that by validating claims through clinical and consumer testing. If a claim doesn’t meet our high standards, we won’t use it.”– Dr. Michelle Hines, Director, Global Cosmetic R&I. Next thing you know, I was increasing my sales, building a strong business and then I decided to invite my girl-

friends to join my team. I also learned money management, goal setting and how to be a better mom, wife and how to become a better person. The most satisfying and rewarding feeling is helping women look and feel more beautiful as well as be more confident. Balance is so important for mothers who never find the time to finish all the things we need to do every day. I have found that if I spend about 2 hours a day working on Mary Kay or about 10 hours per week, it is perfect for me to meet my goals and
still be present for my family. So many people have seen that during this time of COVID-19 we need to be creative in the ways we can generate an income and well as support the local ladies in our neighborhoods who can give us personalized service. Mary Kay does this and more! I offer bilingual service to my clients in English or Spanish. Mary Kay is a global company and our consultants speak so many languages. We offer product information in English or Spanish depending on the first language of the client.
Mary Kay has a proven business model that helps women discover extra income, make empowered choices and find true beauty from the inside out. If you would like some skincare tips, help with innovative serums and/or join my team please contact me at 619-6476282. You can even download a free Mary Kay Skin Analyzer App (for iphones). Once you have the results, I can guide you through each product recommendation and explain all the benefits. Please find me at: www. marykay.com/lacosta1722
Why is skincare different for men? Let’s face it—men are busy and often think just soap and water in the shower is good enough to care for their skin. Your skin is the body’s largest organ and needs and deserves special treatment. Let Mary Kay products show you an easy way to care for your most valuable asset, your skin. Give the man in your life a great gift for Father’s Day- one he can really useskincare formulated for him.
Here are three reasons why men need their own skincare regimen: 1. The razor affects the skin’s ability to heal. 2. Changes in lifestyle such as exposure to environmental toxins, sun and poor diet makes the skin require more protection. 3. Different biological aspects of their skin such as the size of pores and collagen production. That all means that men need specific skin care formulas designed for him.

RECORD NUMBER OF TEENS EARN GIRL SCOUTING’S HIGHEST HONOR A record 87 local young women have reached the pinnacle of Girl Scouting by earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. Just five percent of eligible Girl Scouts attain the prestigious designation. The Gold Award Girl Scouts were honored on Saturday during a socially distanced ceremony at Liberty Station. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan was the keynote speaker. Last April, Stephan was honored as one of Girl Scouts San Diego’s “Cool Women of 2021.” Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award by demonstrating accomplishments in leadership, community service, career planning, and personal development. Each girl chooses a local or global issue she cared deeply about, thoroughly investigates the issue, creates a detailed plan to address it, recruits others to help her execute it, and take steps to ensure its sustainability. To overcome the challenges of pandemic restrictions, the 2021 Gold Award Girl Scouts had to significantly revise their approaches to executing the projects. Among

network for middle school girls. The Gold Award gives girls a competitive edge in the college admissions process and job searches. Gold Award Girl Scouts are also eligible for special scholarships and enlist in the military at a higher pay grade.
According to a Girl Scout Research Institute study, Gold Award Girl Scouts are more likely than other girls their age to have positive attitudes and be optimistic about the future, view themselves as leaders, believe they can achieve their goals, and volunteer and make charitable donations in the future.

Greyson and Oscar celebrate the end of the school year
MEET THE FOUR OUTSTANDING EASTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS AND SALUTATORIANS, CLASS OF 2021 By Mia Bertelsen
Every year high schools across our nation choose the valedictorians and salutatorians. They are the students who have the highest GPA and have taken rigorous classes that put them on the path to attend top colleges and universities. Yet, they are more than just very smart and hard-working students. They are great citizens and they hold the hope and promise for our better future. Here at Local Umbrella Media we got the opportunity to get to know these outstanding students more. What a pleasure it is to learn about these four honored students. Meet: Oscar Pena, Eastlake High School Valedictorian Tell us what school you are attending in the fall and what you would like to study. I will be attending Johns Hopkins University this fall and I plan on studying Economics. How do you feel about receiving this honor of being the class Valedictorian? I feel very honored to receive this award, these are the moments one looks forward to the most when slaving away through piles of homework and studying for hours on end. Having said that, I feel as if the honor should really be given to my family, friends, and teachers; for it wouldn’t have been possible without them. What were some of your greatest challenges you faced during these four years of high LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com
school? I would say the biggest challenge was getting used to High School in my Freshman and Sophomore years; I moved from Mexico to the US when I was in 7th grade so I was still relatively new to the environment and language my Freshman year. I had also put a lot of effort into getting ahead in math which led me to end up in classes meant for Seniors as a Sophomore. And even though I wouldn’t consider these situations struggles - because I somewhat brought them upon myself - I still cherish my abilities to follow through with my decisions. What piece of advice would you give to the incoming freshman for next school year? The very best advice I can give someone is to surround themselves with people that have the same interests and passion as they do. BE YOURSELF, whether you want to excel in academics, athletics, dance, or music; being true about who you are is the key to enjoying the seemingly endless yet short years of High School. Who was your favorite teacher or class you took at Eastlake High School? Why? It is very hard to choose a favorite teacher or favorite class so will just give a quick shout-out to Ms. Perez from Freshman Biology, Mr. Cronin from APUSH, and Dr. Leete from AP Bio. I could keep listing names, but then I would just tell you my four year High School schedule. Please share with us a funny memory of your times on campus. One funny memory was when a bird pooped on me right when the lunch bell was going off. My guess was that the bell was a little extra loud that day and caused the bird to be a little extra rattled. add? Thank you for this opportunity Ms. Bertelsen, and thanks to everyone who has supported me throughout these four years.--Oscar Pena Meet: Greyson Naugle, Eastlake High School Valedictorian Tell us what school you are attending in the fall and what you would like to study. I will be attending the University of California, Berkeley, and majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. How do you feel about receiving this honor of being the class Valedictorian? I am so proud to be dignified as the class Valedictorian as I have been striving for this achievement for my entire four years at Eastlake High School. What were some of your greatest challenges you faced during these four years of high school? The greatest challenge I had to overcome during high school was balancing my time between studies, community service, sports, and my social life. In striving for becoming the class Valedictorian, I took 14 AP courses and many other honors-level courses which constituted a large portion of my time studying and doing homework for these classes. In addition, I played baseball year-round all four years, ADVERTISE | Press@LocalUmbrella.com
VOLUME 6 | ISSUE 6 | June, 2021 playing for both the high school team and a club team during the summer and fall. I also spent my weekends volunteering for Jewish Family Service and of course, I had to fit in time to enjoy my day throughout the past four years. What piece of advice would you give to the incoming freshman for next school year? I would tell incoming freshmen to really strive to enjoy every moment they have with their friends and teachers. Try to branch out and get to know people you may not be naturally attracted to and definitely get to know your teachers and make them your friends too. After leaving high school, you will forget the projects and school work you had to do, but although it is cheesy, you will never forget the people you met along the way. Who was your favorite teacher or class you took at Eastlake High School? Why? There are really so many teachers and classes that I loved so it’s hard just to pick one. So I’ll shout out a few of my favorites: Mr. Colarusso, Dr. Price, Ms. V, Ms. Haislip, Mr. Cronin, Mr. Burress, Mr. Fernandez and Ms. Brinkman. GO TITANS!!! Meet: Zach Shields, Eastlake High School Salutatorian Tell us what school you are attending in the fall and what you would like to study. I will be attending Baylor University under the Science Research Fellows major, and will be pursuing a career in scientific research or in the medical field, potentially studying neuroscience. How do you feel about receiving this honor of being the class salutatorian? It is an honor to be the salutatorian and it is humbling to know that my four years of hard work have paid off. I want to thank my teachers and my counselor, Ms. Ereno, for helping guide me throughout this journey. What were some of your greatest challenges you faced during these four years of high school? From day one of high school, I had obstacles to overcome to get to where I am today. From a freshman year teacher that discriminated against me for my Christian faith, to being cyberbullied for political beliefs, and with a disappointing year-and-a-half of at-home learning, high school has not been as easy as anticipated. But with faith, a strong family support system and mentorship, I have navigated through the thick and thin with success. What piece of advice would you give to the incoming freshman for next school year? High school will be over sooner than you think, so cherish every moment with friends and family. Get involved in multiple activities, whether a sport, club, or leadership opportunity. Continuously working hard in all that you do will not only give you the immediate reward of high-grade marks and success, but it will create good habits that will lead to greater opportunities in life. Who was your favorite teacher or class you took at Eastlake High School? Why? My favorite teacher at Eastlake was Mr. Colarusso and he taught Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Zach Shields plays for the Eastlake Lacrosse team
His engaging labs and dissections provided a hands-on learning experience that sparked my interest in the medical field. He champions his students’ victories while also challenging us to work and study to be successful in life. Please share with us a funny memory of your times on campus. with lots of in-person campaigning drew wild support from my peers. Is there anything else you would like to add? I would like to give a big thank you to my parents and sisters for cheering me on, my friends for all the fun memories, and I am thankful to God for giving me my abilities and opportunities. the plan of majoring in biology and following the medical pathway. How do you feel about receiving this honor of being the class salutatorian? Personally, receiving the honor of class salutatorian represents all the hard work and dedication I devoted these past four years. It makes me thankful for the opportunities that I was presented with and for the individuals such as my parents and teachers who guided me to reach this honor. This inspires me to keep pushing myself towards my goals and continue growing as not only a student but as a person. What were some of your greatest challenges you faced during these four years of high school? The greatest challenge for me these past four years in high school was overcoming the pandemic. Everything from learning to collaborating became more individual based and completely changed the high school routine. Worst of all it was my senior year, so my class and I missed out on many celebrations that would’ve really made the high school experience more memorable. What piece of advice would you give to the incoming freshman for next school year? To the freshman, my advice is to make the most out of your four years in high school. Although it may not seem like it, these years will pass before you realize. So whether its participating in clubs, sports, striving academically or making new friends, make sure to step out of your comfort zone. The high school experience will be as great as you make it, so take advantage of any opportunities that are placed in front of you. Who was your favorite teacher or class you took at Eastlake High School? Why? My favorite teacher was Ms. Collier, who taught AP English Language and Composition. The way she was dedicated to helping her students whether it was academically or their personal well-being was very motivating, especially during this pandemic. She was also willing to spend time after class with students to help strengthen college essays and guide them on their way to future goals. She always greeted the class with a welcoming and energetic attitude and made her teaching a truly valuable experience. Arthur and his family

Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2021 of High Tech High!
High Tech High, Chula Vista Graduate Raymond Castillo II
You walked into your middle school not knowing what to expect. You quickly adapted and grew like a wildflower. Your growth was exponential but in a very harmonic sense it was balanced and that has always the key for you. You renewed your faith and were baptized and continue your journey. Academically you have accomplished so many awards throughout your years at HTHCV, but one that was so amazing was the 2017 C Span StudentCam competition. This was a nationwide competition!!! Your team came in 3rd place, Wow! That was huge! This says so much about your work ethic, your leadership, always giving more and putting in more work, always grinding to succeed, you did not give up. Not surprising, you received so many certificates and accolades from many esteemed dignitaries like Mary Salas, Juan Vargas and many others. Now, athletically it was baseball, and you were a 4-year starter with practice and games. You never wanted to be late. Sophomore year you led the team behind the plate, always putting in extra work, late practices, batting cages, all the blood, sweat and tears was the year you made it to semifinals. You received 11 acceptance letters out of the 13 colleges that you applied for. In the end, choosing to be a Bruin and attending UCLA in the fall. These are but a few select moments of growth and balance that you portrayed. One chapter ends and a new chapter awaits you. Ray, as you go into your next chapter of life, and out of the nest, our advice to you is this: don’t let a day go by without learning something new, it is worth the investment. And secondly: stay balanced. Love, those who have seen you grow

Arturo, I know it has not been easy to reach this final journey. There were many overtime hours of work accumulated since Kindergarten, many obstacles and goals that seemed unattainable. It is a great pride to be your Mom and always feel very proud of you. Trust yourself and never stop following the path you have chosen. Your Mom adores you.
To our beautiful, intelligent and loving daughter. Today you graduate with honors and this is a step for you to pursue your dreams. Never give up. We couldn’t be more proud of you. We are in awe of her - as none of the rest of us can do any of those things well. Hannah loves to head to the beach and hang with her friends...and prefers quality friends to quantity. She is kind-hearted and loves people and animals. Hannah has a heart of gold and is solid in her faith. Her convictions are strong and she does not back down from what is right and what is truth. I love this about her. She is passionate in her walk with Jesus and has the most beautiful journal Bible - full of art/color (check out her instagram @_calligrafaith_). Hannah Lynne - I love you oodles and can’t wait to see you thrive at Liberty. Love your love for Jesus and others. Keep shining bright baby girl!
Love, Mom and Dad Zachariah Robert Shields is graduating as Salutatorian
from Eastlake High School and after many great choices, has decided he will be moving to Waco, TX to attend Baylor University in a specialty major of only 10 selected students as a Science Research Fellow. He plans to focus on neuroscience and eventually go to Medical School. His interest and passion for science/medical and the brain developed as he watched my Mom slip away from Frontal Temporal Dementia. He was so caring and attentive as she slipped away over the years and became fascinated with the brain and how it works. Zach is incredibly bright, but that isn’t the only thing that defines him. Zach is an athlete and is the Captain of 2 Varsity sports Lacrosse and Waterpolo. He is super competitive and is a leader both on and off the field/ pool. (He also loves to surf with his buddies before school whenever possible). Zach is a natural leader and has also served his school as Junior Class President and currently as ASB Vice President (in addition to being the Founder/co-President of the Aux Club with is sisters - which had 100+ in weekly attendance). Zach plays both the piano and guitar and is usually found playing one of those during his study breaks. Although Zach’s accomplishments are many, the thing I am most proud of is Zach’s character and integrity. Zach has a strong sense of right vs. wrong and has strong convictions, and he does not waiver. Zach is unapologetic about his faith and has no problem living counter-cultural - so that his life, decisions and actions honor Jesus. Zach is friendly, easy to talk to and is a friend to everyone. He is confident in who he is and where he is headed. Zachariah, although you are a man, you will always be my baby boy. Can’t wait to see all God is going to continue to do through you. You are an influencer by the way you live and care about others.
Proud of you....Love you buddy.
Love, Mom and Dad
To my son Daniel
Your graduation is a wonderful achievement. I’m happy for all the ways you’ve grown and everything that you have accomplished. Remember dreams aren’t just handed to us, you must work hard to achieve them. Also, keep in mind that you will never lose, you either win or learn from your mistakes. Please know that you will always be my little precious boy that God gave me. I may not carry you in my arms anymore, but I will always carry you in my heart.
Congratulations and all the best, Mom

THE SPEEDWAYS
JUNE 2021 BY BART MENDOZA © MUSICSCENESD // MUSICSCENESD.COM

Radio Sounds
In their three short years of existence, British powerpop quartet The Speedways has managed a terrific run of releases, each building on the one before and highly anticipated by fans. Songs such as “Kisses Are History” and “Empty Pages,” are full of classic hooks, harmonies, jangle, handclaps and teen angst, spotlighting real songcraft. If you’re a powerpop fan there is not a weak spot in their discography of two acclaimed albums, three singles and two EP’s, the latest, a disc of covers, Borrowed & Blue (Snap!! Records / Hurrah! Musica). The Speedways, featuring Matt Julian (lead vocals, lead & rhythm guitar), Mauro Venegas (lead & rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Adrian Alfonso (bass & backing vocals) and Kris Hood (drums), started as a solo project by Julian. He released the first Speedways album Just Another Regular Summer in May 2018. “It became a real band a couple of months later when the opportunity to play a show came together,” he said. “It’s been an active band ever since.” He notes the group’s name comes from the Morrissey song “Speedway.” “Everything was connected in the beginning. The songs, the artwork, the band name, the album title etc. It was a very personal thing then, but it’s a real band now.” Julian cites classic tunesmiths as an influence on his band’s melodic LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com
rock ‘n’ roll. “There are so many - Lennon & McCartney, Greenwich & Barry, Goffin & King, Pomus & Shuman, Buddy Holly, The Ramones, Tom Petty, Kirsty MacColl, Del Shannon, Arthur Alexander, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, Squeeze, Jackie De Shannon... loads more. I copy everyone,” he said good naturedly. “It just comes out in different ways. I like to stick within traditional themes and structures and I love a good middle eight.” The new EP, collecting covers of songs by Kirsty MacColl, Billy Ocean, Roky Erickson, Hanoi Rocks and ABBA, was put together for pragmatic reasons. “We wanted to stay as busy as possible during lockdowns so we thought a covers EP was the way to go,” Julian said. “There was no point rushing new material out or forcing new songs if they weren’t there.” The original plans were to record the Hanoi Rocks song as a b-side, “but our plans changed and it ended up as a full covers EP. I don’t actually remember how we chose the songs, but we all love pop and soul as much as we love rock n roll.”

The band has yet to tour the U.S., but hopes are high to correct that situation sooner than later. “We were offered an American festival slot this September in Denver with some really cool bands, but it just couldn’t happen sadly. Hopefully one day we will get to go to America to play. It’s definitely top of the dream list.” The music biz is tougher than ever what motivates Julian to keep going? “Trying to write really good songs, playing music with my friends, hanging out and drinking, travelling to different places, meeting new people and playing with other cool bands,” he said. “All the best stuff.” While Borrowed & Blue is hot off the presses, plans are already underway for more recordings and a return to gigging. “We have shows in the diary and further ones penciled in which is great,” Julian said. “We’re writing songs for the next record and rehearsing as often as we can. As I said earlier, the Speedways started off as a solo thing, but for the next record we’re all going to write & arrange. I think it’ll give us a new dimension and make us a better band.” With two great albums behind him, Julian is looking forward to expanding the band’s horizons a little. “I’m really proud of my writing on the first two records,” he said. “I think the songs are great, but I’d much rather it was a group effort from now.” www.thespeedways.bandcamp.com

ED KORNHAUSER
The Short Years
If you are a fan of jazz in San Diego, you are no doubt aware of the talents of pianist Ed Kornhauser. He has been the musician of choice for many combos big and small and last year issued his debut solo album, The Short Years, resulting in nominations for both “Jazz Album of the Year” and “Album of the Year” at the 2021 San Diego Music Awards. Although known for his keyboard skills, Kornhauser was initially tempted to play a different instrument. “I used to play the tuba, and can still a little, but I’m more of a tuba owner than a tuba player,” he said good naturedly. His influences as a pianist are varied. “I was influenced early on by Oscar Peterson. His unmistakable feel, his bluesy-ness, his unbelievable technique... all things I still (in vain) strive to even come close to.” He notes later pianists who’ve left a mark, including Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, Keith Jarrett, Ethan Iverson, and Erroll Garner. “As we speak there’s a picture of Erroll on my wall looking over my shoulder, I’ve been working on my organ technique for a while.” Kornhauser said. Although he’s performed and recorded with dozens of groups over the years, he’s quick to cite favorites “It’s a tie between themattsmithneujazztrio, which is myself with drummer LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com
Matt Smith and bassist Mackenzie Leighton, and all the duo stuff I’ve done with vocalist Leonard Patton.” Kornhauser has performed at San Diego’s finest venues, but his favorite performance, was a more personal event. “I hiked Mt. Fuji when I was 24,” he recalled. “My friend brought her flute and I had my melodica. We met a guy up there with a sort of recorder thing and had a jam at the summit. Zero memory of what we did - we hiked at night and got to the top at dawn. I was delirious.” For his part Kornhauser, simply loves making music. “I love decorating the space I’m performing in with sound,” he said. “And I love how that, sometimes at least, makes people happy, and makes the moment memorable for them. I also love being improvisatory and creating everything on the fly and I love that my job takes me

to different locales weekly. It helps break things up.” Looking ahead, fans can expect new music from him before to long. “I’ve got a second album cooking in my head with some of the music I’ve been writing this pandemic,” Kornhauser said. “It’s sort of a jazz meets Americana sort of thing. Beyond that, I’m also very excited for all my pre-pandemic gigs to fully come back, as they have (slowly) been!” www.edkornhauser. com ADVERTISE | Press@LocalUmbrella.com

FOUR OUTSTANDING CHULA VISTA DADS Pizzo’s. Can you share a funny story or a great moment you had being a parent? The first thing that comes to mind is crossing the finish line at a 100 mile race and having my kids run up to me. I feel like a super hero! Also, this year was really cool having my son as a student in class. Anything else you would like to add? Well, we are in the middle of a big change for our family. Our house is in escrow here and we are moving to our casita in Bahia Asuncion, Baja California Sur, Mexico. We will be living there full time and our kids will go to school there. My wife and I are starting Johnston Family Tutoring (www.johnstonfamilytutoring.com) in fall. We plan on volunteering at the local school, starting a huge garden, brewing craft beer, and just spending time as a family. I think this past year has made us rethink how we want to live moving forward. We have loved our time in Eastlake. The community has shaped me as a father, educator, and husband. I want to thank everyone for the support they have given me and our family through the years. It’s a special place! Meet Roberto Enrique Garay, Law Enforcement
Zachary Johnston
Roberto Garay
In honor of Father’s Day we are sharing with our readers four outstanding Chula Vista dads. We hope you enjoy reading about these amazing dads and all they do for their families and our community. Meet Zachary Johnston, Teacher and Coach Hi my name is Zachary Johnston. My wife, Tracy, is a teacher at Eastlake Elementary school where my daughter, Mikayla, age 11, attends. My son, Gabriel, is 12 and is finishing up 7th grade at Eastlake Middle School. We have a dog named Zeus and a cat named Rami. What is the best part about being a dad to you? Being a father is a never-ending
challenge. Just as soon as I get things figured out, my kids change on me. I really enjoy the challenge of learning what motivates and challenges my kids as they are both so different. And I think my kids are a great reminder to me to be the best person I can be. I know they are both looking up to me. What is your job/career? I am a math teacher at Eastlake Middle School. I also coach the boys and girls cross country team. I was lucky to have worked there my entire career from student teaching until now. I think 12 years in all. How do you find balance to be a dad, husband, professional, and find some “me” time too? Do you have advice for other dads?
LOCAL NEWS | LocalUmbrellaNews.com
/LocalUmbrellaMedia
For many years, I have been involved in ultra running events. Training for an event takes a great deal of time and effort. Luckily my kids love going to my races and cheering me on. But it can be challenging fitting in the time to train. So I often take off one or two Fridays a month and go for my long runs. Even better is when I can talk my wife to join me. Having a supportive wife is key as well. She knows when I need to recharge and encourages me to find some “me” time. Recently my son joined the Eastlake Mountain Bike Team. My wife and I would get in our long runs together while he was at practice. I think you have to be creative to make the time…but you must make the time. What makes Chula Vista special to you? We don’t live in Chula Vista. We were in escrow a number of years back but I got a pink slip and we lost the house. But we attend work and school there, do our shopping there, and use a lot of the outdoor space so I would say we have a good read on the community. What I like about Eastlake/Chula Vista is the sense of community. I always have an eye open for a current or former student. It’s just has a small-town feel. What is your favorite thing to do in our community to have fun with your family? Our family has been getting into mountain biking and the community offers a great variety of trails and the new bike park is wonderful. But we love camping at Sweetwater Regional Campground. There is so much to do and if we forget anything we can run up to Trader Joes or get a pizza from @LocalUmbrellaMedia
I am married 30 years to my wife Maria Garay and we have two children Allyssa Garay and Roberto Garay, Jr. What is the best part about being a dad to you? The best part would have to be watching my children grow up. The memories we made and continue to make, whether it be good or bad. What is your job/career? Law enforcement How do you find balance to be a dad, husband, professional, and find some “me” time too? Do you have advice for other dads in this area? Finding balance is hard at times, I must admit, but it’s very important to put in some “me” time. I make sure once I’m home to leave work at the door and give the necessary time to my family. Fortunately I have a schedule that allows me to be home in the afternoon and focus on family time. I use the evening to relax and enjoy my “me” time. My advice to other dads is don’t take your time for granted. When your kids have

VOLUME 6 | ISSUE 6 | June, 2021 and nature. What is the best part about being a dad to you? Besides fixing broken toys and repairing skateboard ramps, the best part of being a father is spending quality time, sharing experiences, and engaging in amazing conversations with my kids. As they get older, it is great listening to their stories, thoughts and theories about different things. It amazes me of the people that my kids are becoming. With one in college, one in high school, and the youngest two in elementary school, it’s so real of how fast they grow. I don’t want to miss a thing. There is nothing more in life that I enjoy more than being here for them and being actively involved in their life. What is your job/career? I have been a firefighter for over 26 years, and I am currently in the position of Battalion Chief. In many ways, my profession has given me the opportunity to serve the community. However, in a humble and respectful way, my job
21
has also given me the ability to see life through a different lense and because of that, I have the utmost respect and appreciation for life, family, and friends. How do you find balance to be a dad, husband, professional, and find some “me” time too? Do you have advice for other dads in this area? Everyone’s life and household is different. Time does not wait for anyone and things must get done. You can schedule yourself around time, however, you cannot schedule time around yourself. I mainly balance my time between family and work, always family first. Whether I am at work or at home, having an actual list of things to do is what works for me. One of the most important and very much needed times for me is spending quality time with my wife. Whether we spend time together on a lunch/ dinner date, or just walking around Costco, it’s spending time with her that makes everything right. What makes Chula Vista special Jorge Sanchez
those extracurricular activities they participate in, dance, football, baseball, soccer, etc., take the time off, if you can, and be there. If you can volunteer your time to help out, do it. It’s the most gratifying thing you can do. Make those memories with your kids. What makes Chula Vista special to you? The community is special with the way we come together and support each other. During COVID we saw a great example of that. So many local businesses were affected by the restrictions and how we rallied to keep them open was important. What is your favorite thing to do in our community to have fun with your family? We always try to participate in some kind of community event every week, whether it be the farmers market, a high school game, supporting a small business, we like to do and keep things local. Can you share a great moment you had being a parent? When my daughter told me she was expecting my first grandchild. Having my grandson here is the best feeling a parent can have, the unconditional love that is shared. Meet Jorge Sanchez, Firefighter My name is Jorge Sanchez, and
I’ve been married for 20 years. My wife Brandi and I have raised four amazing children. My oldest, Nico, attends Iowa State University and is studying meteorology. My daughter Sasha is a Rebels soccer player and will be a senior this year at Eastlake High School. My fun and active twin boys, Rowan and Ethan, keep us busy, and this coming school year will be their last year of elementary school. Our family enjoys spending time together in the great outdoors either hiking, camping, days on the beach, and spending time with family/grandparents. We also enjoy lazy days at home. Our favorite camping location is Lower Pines Yosemite. 19 years ago Yosemite became our backyard, with all of my children having been to Yosemite before their first birthday, and several times since. All my kids have a natural love for the outdoors

June, 2021 | VOLUME 6 | ISSUE 6 to you? Ray Provencio Chula Vista is special to me because I grew up here. I remember the hills of Otay Lakes Road used to have cows roaming around and flowers would bloom the hillsides where many neighborhood communities now span the hills. I also remember when Otay Lakes used to be very far east, it’s not so far anymore. It is the memories and many friendships that I made in Chula Vista that make this place special. I also started the fire service here as a Chula Vista Fire Explorer when I was a kid. I met my wife in high school and went to prom with her, Hilltop High class of 1990. Chula Vista has always been special to me. What is your favorite thing to do in our community to have fun with your family? Our family enjoys many of the walking, hiking, jogging, and bicycling trail networks throughout our Eastlake community. Anything else you would like to add? A quote that I like by William Wallce: “Every man dies, not every man truly lives” Meet Ray Provencio, Marine My name is Ray Provencio, Jr. I come from a long line of Marines. I think we have about 20 of us from my family tree in the Corps. My son Samuel and his family moved up to Sacramento about a year and a half ago. He works as a chef in a Benihana’s style restaurant. My grandson Paxton is the joy of my life. He is almost 3 and is a bundle of joy. When he visits, we go to Padres games, swim in the pool and play with his dad’s old toys. What is the best part about being a dad/grandpa to you? Watching them grow up and become adults. Being involved in their life and trying to set an example of how to become a contributing member of society. I love looking at my grandson and seeing
the love in his eyes. What is your job/career? I retired from the Marine Corps 23 years ago after a career of 25 years. Afterwards I worked for a technology company for 15 years as the West Coast Program Manager. I am currently retired and spend my days enjoying life, working out at the gym and visiting friends and family. Do you have any advice to share for other dads/grandpas? Be kind, loving and understanding but mix in an even blend of firmness. Involve yourself in their activities, homework and monitor their friends. Set the example and show them how to be a success in life. Tell us about your journey of being a single dad. What was

your greatest accomplishment? I raised my son from the time he was one until he married his beautiful wife Michele. My proudest moment was seeing my son become a man, a great husband and a loving dad! What makes Chula Vista special to you? Chula Vista is a large city, but each area has its own small town intimacy. I grew up here before joining the Marines, so I am partial to our city. The people are friendly and caring towards each other. I love Chula Vista! What is your favorite thing to do in our community to have fun with your family? Contributing to the community is so satisfying. I have taught Catechism, I was the founding President
@LocalUmbrellaMedia
of the Eastlake Little League, I was the initial Secretary and Weight Master of the Eastlake/Bonita Pop Warner, and I coached soccer and I was a Little League coach/manager for many years. This gave me so much joy. Those activities were in the past. Now I enjoy visiting all the new restaurants and stores in the area. Can you share a funny story or a great moment you had being a parent? We had many great moments but some of my favorites were youth sports. We played soccer, football and baseball. I taught my son about dedication to anything he attempted. The more you practiced, the better you got. The more you studied, the more you learned. The more effort you put into being a good parent, the better your child will become. Anything else you would like to add? I am a Corvette enthusiast and Padres fan and my son picked that up from me. We are now trying to brainwash my grandson into becoming one of us. We had Chargers season tickets for 23 years but, since they are gone, we have now turned all our enthusiasm to the Padres. We are very close to our cousins and nephews and often have family BBQs. We also enjoy getting together with our neighbors and friends often.

Well, it’s not really hidden. In fact, it is so easy to do some shopping and work up a bit of an appetite and then sit down for some outstanding Mexican food. Now, I know that we have so many great places to eat Mexican. Why here? First of all the owners are a local family and brought with them the very best recipes from their hometown to share with you. Everything is freshly prepared and outstanding. The salsas alone will keep you coming back. The namesake of the restaurant is their classic dish. Chilaquiles is a traditional Mexican breakfast dish consisting of corn tortillas cut into quarters and lightly fried. They add different sauces and toppings to make it heavenly. My favorite sauce is the mole. Mole is made with dried chiles, nuts, seeds, chocolate and more. Anything with chocolate in it is a winner in my book! You don’t have to wait for breakfast to order chilaquiles. I give you permission to enjoy this dish anytime.
Breakfast is a popular time for families to eat at Los Chilaquiles. They are open every day for takeout and patio seating. Speed dial worthy you may ask? Oh yes! Call them at 619-397-5282, 2015 Birch Road, Chula Vista. Tell Los Chilaquiles you read about them in Local Umbrella Media and get a free order of churros when you spend $25 or more during the month of June 2021. It pairs nicely with their special recipe for café de la olla. Enjoy!
