For the return to Pontresina, you can spare yourself the walk and book a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride back to Pontresina station (extra charge on site). The train will then take you from Pontresina station to Zuoz, where you will be picked up at the station by your next hosts at Hotel Castell.

Soothing tranquillity in Val Bever

It is this tranquillity that turns the simple hike into a great experience: from Hotel Castell, the trail first leads to Madulain. The path then leads along the river to Bever. From Bever, the path follows the Beverin stream to Spinas, sometimes over snow-covered plains, sometimes through enchanting forests. The leisurely hike is accompanied by the Rhaetian Railway, which meanders unhurriedly along the Albula line down to Bever. After arriving in Spinas, it takes you back to Celerina. Run on the training course of local, former World Cup cross-country skier Nathalie von Siebenthal from Lauenen - who knows, maybe you'll manage to beat the athlete's time? In the Turbachtal, the idyllic side valley of Gstaad, nestled between the Wistätthorn, Tube and Giferspitz, the sunny plain invites you to a leisurely round in a magnificent winter landscape. The cross-country ski trail runs from the village to Wintermatte and back again. The post bus takes you from Gstaad to Turbach and the starting point of the trail in a quarter of an hour.

ITINERARY

Stage 1: Glide across the Engadine lakes on the world-famous marathon cross-country trail

You start your cross-country adventure in Celerina near St. Moritz. If you don't have your own cross-country skiing equipment, you can have it professionally fitted out at the Celerina cross-country skiing school. After your first taste of snow on the day of arrival, enjoy the spacious wellness and spa area of the Cresta Palace - and look forward to dinner in the stylish hotel restaurant.

After breakfast on day 2, you set off on the first leg of your cross-country ski tour. What do your muscles say - do you fancy an extensively sporty tour, or would you prefer a gentle one? The choice is yours: for the longer variant (16km), take the bus to Sils Maria and glide along the worldfamous Engadin Marathon cross-country skiing route over the Lakes Silvaplana and Champfer to St. Moritz, past the Lake St. Moritz to the fairytale-like Lake Staz. Here you can linger over a cup of tea in the lakeside restaurant before setting off on the last section to Pontresina. For the shorter version (7km), we recommend starting in St. Moritz. At the Hotel Saratz in Pontresina, enjoy a welcome drink with a magnificent view of the Roseg valley as well as the soothing hamam. Afterwards, indulge in a 4-course gourmet dinner from the award-winning cuisine, served in the historic Art Nouveau hall.

Leg 2: On the 2nd section of the marathon cross-country trail, always nicely along the Inn River

On the second stage, you continue gently along the plain for a good 16 kilometres. Next to the heavenly silver tracks of the marathon course, the snow-covered Inn glistens, which you follow to the railway station of Zuoz. Here, by appointment, you will be picked up by your hosts at the Hotel Castell and driven to the "castle". Enjoy the best view of the whole valley from your comfortable room and discover the hotel world between art, nature, culinary delights and well-being.

Leg 3: On the tracks in Val Bever

Freshly invigorated, you set off on the third and final leg of your crosscountry tour. The red train takes you to Spinas, where you can join the cross-country trail (classic and skating) in the immediate vicinity of the station. This meanders gently downhill along the line of the Rhaetian Railway from Spinas to Bever. On the way you can enjoy the fascinating fairytale scenery of the surrounding peaks and the beautiful Val Bever. In the lower village of Bever you will find a connection to the marathon cross-country ski run via the airfield to Celerina. At the Cresta Palace Hotel, they look forward to welcoming you again. Enjoy the end of your journey in the warming spa area and a 4-course dinner in the hotel's Grand Restaurant.

In the baroque old town of Solothurn

Against the flow of the Aare

Heading towards the Zytgloggenturm and via Schwellenmätteli, you leave Bern's old town. Hiking in the Silvretta area

Beautiful mountain hike in alpine terrain from the mountain village of Vnà, not far from Scuol, via «Heidelbergerhütte» (hut) to Samnaun. This tour combines first-class hotel comfort with simple hut romance. Over hill and dale, through lush green meadows, past rushing mountain streams and always surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Silvretta Group, you pass from valley to valley - one more beautiful than the other!

ITINERARY

You start your journey with a 2-night stay (or more if you wish) at the Hotel Belvédère in Scuol. Arrive and enjoy is the motto here! A generous wellness world and regional gourmet cuisine await you. Take a sauna in the hotel's own SPA Vita Nova and bathe in the mineral water of the Engadin Bad Scuol, which is directly connected to the hotel by a walkway. On the 2nd day of the trip there is time to explore the surroundings of Scuol and the Swiss National Park.

Through the wild and romantic Val Sinestra and over the Fimber Pass to the Heidelbergerhütte

On the 3rd day of your journey, you drop off your luggage at the hotel and, lightly packed with the utensils for the mountain hut, board the post bus bound for Vnà, the starting point of the transfer hike. Transport of your suitcase from Scuol to your accommodation in Samnaun is taken care of. The post bus leaves directly in front of the Hotel Belvédère. From the terminus at Vnà, Jalmer you continue on foot. At a leisurely pace, with a slight incline, the path leads you deeper and deeper into the wild and romantic Val Sinestra. At the Zuort farm you have the opportunity to enjoy a coffee before the gradient gradually increases. Or you can continue straight on to Griosch, where you will come across an authentic little "Alpbeizli" (small restaurant), which offers products from the region and from the alp. From Griosch, the trail leads deeper and deeper into the beautiful, remote mountain landscape. You hike through lush green meadows while listening to the murmur of the wild brooks. Then follows the ascent of around 1.5 hours to the Fimber Pass. At the top of the pass you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Fimba Valley. The path formed by the water winds its way down through the mountain meadows to the «Heidelbergerhütte». This is wonderfully nestled in the alpine landscape far away from civilisation.

Eye to eye with the marmots on the way to Samnaun

Freshly refreshed, you hike across the alpine mats inhabited by marmots in the direction of Piz Fenga Pitschna. You have to climb a good 500 metres to the Fenga Pass. Here you stand exactly on the border between Austria and Switzerland and enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Silvretta Group. Over hill and dale, the trail first leads down and then up to the Zeblasjoch. From here a wide, pleasant path leads down to Samnaun.

Samnaun: recreation at the destination

You are already expected at the Chalet Silvretta Hotel & Spa. Enjoy your welcome drink and treat yourself to some soothing hours in the SPA area. Our wellness tip: Sweat in the earth sauna, cool off in the garden and under the cold outdoor shower. Enjoy a fine 4-course menu in the evening and use the last day of your stay for further hikes in the nature paradise around Samnaun: how about a detour to Ischgl, for example? Unesco-Tour Southern France and Italy

THE HIGHLIGHTS:

These stunning cave paintings were created by prehistoric men and women a staggering 36,000 years ago. Painted on the cave walls of the Chauvet Grotto near the Pont d’Arc in the south of the Ardèche region, they remain preserved for eternity in limestone and clay. These untouched treasures were discovered in 1994 by three amateur cave explorers – amazingly well preserved, of enormous historical value and rich in latePalaeolithic drawings of animals and wildlife – 3 factors which led to the cave being classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. Sadly, yet for obvious conservation reasons, the cave will never be accessible to the general public. However, you can visit a larger-than-life replica of the cave which is also the largest of its kind in the world.

“The Camargue region, which lies in the delta of the Rhône in southern France, has a very unique charm. Its unspoilt nature, its salt marshes and, above all, the countless pink flamingos will never cease to amaze. Its traditional festivals with the famous white horses and bulls give the region a truly flamboyant feel.”

A 45-minute drive from the Hotel Le Clair de la Plume takes you to the magnificent Roman edifice, the Amphitheatre at Orange. This well-preserved, most ancient and most impressive of structures is also a World Heritage site and allows you to imagine the pomp and splendour of former times. The amphitheatre was constructed in the 1st century AD. The imposing stage wall was designed to enhance the acoustics and to put the actors "centre-stage" for the audience. Louis XIV was so impressed, he described it as "the most beautiful wall in his entire kingdom". During the French Revolution, the amphitheatre served as a refuge, fortification, and even a prison. Today it welcomes visitors and hosts opera festivals, summer concerts and theatre productions.

Sur Le Pont d’Avignon

Avignon has a rich historic and cultural heritage. The Palace of the Popes and its grand square, the famous Pont d’Avignon, the city walls and the cathedral have all earned the city a UNESCO World Heritage title. Be sure to visit the "Palais des Papes", the largest gothic palace ever built and the medieval art museum "Le Petit Palais" at the end of the main square. Stroll through the narrow Avignon streets and don’t forget the worldfamous bridge and the song it inspired… ("Sur le pont d’Avignon, on y danse, on y danse…")

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Arles has several monuments worth visiting: the amphitheatre, the Roman theatre, the Saint Trophime cloister, the Mari des Forums, the baths of Constantine, the Alyscamps necropolis, and the Roman battlements. For contemporary art enthusiasts, we recommend a detour to the " Maison d’Arles" where Maja Hoffmann, Swiss art collector and heiress of the Hoffmann- La Roche pharmaceutical company, has established an interdisciplinary centre for culture. The centre piece is a striking aluminium tower designed by star architect Frank O’Gehry. Arles has much to offer in addition to its UNESCO status, including one of the prettiest markets in Provence which takes place every Saturday morning, award-winning restaurants such as "La Chassagnette" as well a number of exquisite boutiques that will make you want to browse!

The capital city of Liguria has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006 and is famous for the "Palazzi dei Rolli", and the historic renaissance and baroque palaces of the aristocracy located in the Strade Nuove. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries they will immerse you in the aristocracy of days gone by. In the Middle Ages, Genoa was considered one of the most important ports and trade posts of the Mediterranean Sea. Lest we forget, once upon a time, Christopher Columbus, explorer and discoverer of the Americas was born here. Today, this former hub for trade and commerce is rather more a centre for culture and a pleasure harbour.

Together we are going one step further: In April 2022, all our member hotels committed themselves to actively working towards a sustainable future with various joint and individual measures. A detailed sustainability concept has been drawn up with which the sustainable development of the Private Selection Hotels is being driven forward. The project is supported by Innotour, the funding instrument of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO of Switzerland.
