ISSUE 4: FLUIDITY Issue four marks the first anniversary since our official launch of issue one in November 2012. We thank all of you for the continued support! We have been able to break new records every issue and this is a testament to the great community that has been contributing to our overall growth. Our fourth issue is themed around ‘fluidity’, and we are truly excited to share the brilliant interpretations that our contributors have made. Creativity is truly boundless and we can all appreciate it through this pivotal issue. In our minds, the theme ‘fluidity’ is an universal word that can be translated as ‘never stop moving, never stop creating.’

PHOTOGRAPHERS CDDM INTERVIEWED BY TAK TAKEI Christina and Dy – I really like your artist name and the logo. It’s always refreshing to see a partnership in this industry that can muster harmony and elevate your creativity as a team. What is your story on this? How did you become established together? Partnership is a one legged race - if you and your partner happen to be running at different speeds you will, at some point, falter. With that being said, CDDM began as just a CD and a DM; individuated but somehow moving at the same pace. In time, our own individual circles had fallen into a natural synchronicity encouraged simply by spatial proximity. That is when we knew we could work within the same movement. Or in other words, we were at the same place at the same time - doing, as it seemed then, similar things. Have you worked individually in the past before forming your team? How has your partnership change your work flow, if any? CDDM was around before CDDM was around; we had been collaborating for years before we thought to commit ourselves officially to the duo. However, what initially enticed us into the partnership was our complementary work ethic and our ever-changing roles within our collusion. Sometimes we were muse other times mentor. Now
our efforts are focused on equilibrium so that neither of us tire out. So what are some of the benefits of a partnership? Any downsides? Our partnership is a source of strength and stability for us even in our personal lives. It affords us a place of certainty in times of vacillation. The downside is the confusion people experience when they regard artists in a duo. For some reason, people feel the need to accredit the work to one person in particular when it is very much a balanced procedure. Can you tell me more about Red Extension Cord of Love story? Shot and edited on iPhones? Sounds intriguing. We were inspired by the concept of love in Chinese and Japanese mythology, in which it is believed that the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankle or little finger of two people who are destined to meet. The string may experience distress over a lifetime but it can never be undone. Re-envisioning this notion of encounter and attachment in a contemporary context, the red string becomes less an instrument of the deities and more a technological convenience, linking us together not by fate but by an extension cord.

It affords us a place of certainty in times of vacillation.” We thought it appropriate to shoot the editorial on an iPhone to demonstrate how capable easily acquired bits of technology have become; you can shoot and edit an entire editorial on your iPhone and apparently you can also find your soul-mate on it too [or so we’ve been told]. So how exactly did you “edit” the editorial on your iPhone? No Photoshop or any other editing software was used? The editorial was completely edited and composited through several iPhone apps. No other editing software was used. What/Who are some of your biggest inspirations? Are they similar between the two? Or perhaps you find inspirations rested between your two contrasting minds? In regards to taste without reason, we are dissimilar. However, when it comes to taste with logic we find that, through means of a sometimes long conversation, we can come to appreciate the same things. As for inspiration, we tend to steer away from the big names and the obvious, drawing towards the more mundane and understated. Admittedly, politics and cinema are always recurring themes within our collective mind and act as sources of frustration, if not inspiration.

I want to start out my getting to know you a bit more. Let us hear some of the interesting facts about you! Anything you want to share. Well.. something interesting is where and how I grew up! I was born and lived until 20 in a quite remote area in Venezuela, South America. The best place to grow up in!! An extremely safe place then which allowed us to be outside all of the time either exploring or with our animals. Although I did not realize it at the time, this is where I believe I developed my sensitivity to light. I remember always noticing the beautiful light and just thought that everyone really paid attention to the light around them !! I did not even think about cameras at the time but instead starting painting which my Mom noticed I was more creative minded than better at school let’s say, and she gave me a gentle push in that direction. I only ever painted faces and most often female concentrating on features and shapes of the eyes, nose, etc... Around 18 years old I stopped for awhile and picked back up in Europe whenever I could. And then when I picked up the camera and went into the darkroom for the first time it all made sense.
I ended up going off to Europe after spending a bit of time in the United States after leaving Venezuela and there began modeling which I did for over 9 years based out of Paris. Most people think that it is because of modeling that I am now a photographer - natural progression but not so. Even though in Venezuela it was a remote area my parents were quite social and my Mother was incredibly stylish. And even though as she would say “we lived in the jungle” there were dinners and different social affairs which she had dresses made for her. And I would go along and watch my Mom explain the design she had in mind to this Indian lady who then made her beautiful dresses. That along with her doing her hair and makeup was the beginning of my love for fashion and makeup. Like the darkroom finally making sense to me, I think everything I have done in my life from noticing light as a child, to painting, watching my Mom, working for the best designers in the world all was the road bringing me to photography where I am at home and is the most natural of all things for me. Shooting men or women? Why? Also, what do you enjoy shooting the most? (fashion, beauty, celebrity, etc.)
I love shooting mostly women because of the simple fact of makeup, hair and fashion!! If I can say so myself being female that it is much more challenging shooting women than men but maybe that is also part of the reason!! :) I enjoy shooting a mixture of fashion, beauty and celebrity - not just one area all of the time. Where do you live? At the moment I live in Los Angeles while I have been taking care of a family situation at the same time but will soon start traveling a lot. Will be going to Paris to shoot for a bit soon. When I lived there I was not shooting so I really look forward to going back as a photographer ! Do you believe people in this industry should live in large cities like New York? I think it is essential to be in or near the major cities in the industry. But for me I need a mixture of both the movement of the cities and the quieter side of the smaller town, let’s say to keep my balance. Will you share with us your favorite type of lighting setup? Favorite lighting..?! Well, I don’t quite know! I love to light differently when I can and for each situation. I just love beautiful light. Sure. That’s understandable. So let me ask you differently. What is your favorite shoot so far to date? I think it would be the Red Alert Beauty story that you printed. That is not the easiest of lighting but the whole shoot just worked and flowed . Had the right face, makeup person and the stylist, Kat Ford, who is a young stylist but immensely talented and we work really well together. Funny enough it was one of the quickest shoots as well! What makes someone a good makeup artist, hair stylist, wardrobe stylist or other team members in the industry? There are a lot of good makeup artists, good hair people, as well as stylists but for me it comes down to a group working together and all on the same page. So much has to do with attitude but also the photographer has a personal style as well and the team needs to fit that. Some photographers are quiet, some need to have a lot of movement and talking going on... just depends. But having a great attitude is high on the list! Pre-production, the photoshoot, or post-production. What do you prefer to most? Which one is your least favorite?
Can you walk us through a typical planning process of your editorial? Coming up with a concept for a fashion or beauty story that consists of 6 to 8 pages takes a lot of planning. The trickiest part of all is working with a very small budget as it is editorial but you want to work with talented people too! So the first thing to do is to find a concept or the beginning of a concept and know if what you want to do is shoot studio or location. Which fits. Then start asking the agents for packages to see who would be available to work with you on this - model, hair, makeup and stylists. At the same time you are trying to figure out how and where to shoot this within the limited budget Once you have all of that lined up then you send out a call sheet for everyone and wait for the first thing to drop through or change!! :)) Because it will. So you start out each shoot planning as much as you can and have to be open minded and willing to let changes happen. Can be a lot of stress for sure but it is the nature of shooting. And surprisingly sometimes when those things occur then also a bit of magic happens too and all is well!
I would have to say definitely the shoot is what I like most. Being in it, focusing seeing things come together as you imagined them and executing the images is what I love.
