SUMMER 2013

FROM THE EDITOR

As we welcome the rainy, yet eccentric summer, I reminisce on all of the great series of events that I fortuned in the past year. Nearly a year ago, we formed the magnificent team that has been steering pRIZE Magazine to the third successful issue. At the time, I could not foresee where exactly we’d be a year later. What I do know now is that my decision to start this magazine was one of the best choices that I’ve ever made. With three quality issues strong, over 40,000 reads globally, and surrounded by amazing talents who never cease to humble me as a photographer, I am extremely fortunate to be embarking on this never-ending journey of creative enlightenment. The third issue’s theme, ‘eccentric,’ turned out to be quite appropriate both emotionally and physically for me at the moment. It has been the best issue to date, and I hope it inspires you as much as it has moved me.

THE INTERVIEW

DESIGNER IEVA UZKURATAITE INTERVIEWED BY TAK TAKEI

“I think that handmade work is very important, because it creates a connection between costumer and designer.” Ieva can you tell me a bit about your childhood? Where did you grow up? What were some of your favorite past times?

Where do you get your inspirations? Your past collection names like Bug and Pansy are particularly interesting.

My name is Ieva Uzkurataite. I am from Lithuania. So all my childhood I spent here. I grew up in Klaipeda and it is the only port city in Lithuania. My favorite time in my life was studies in gymnasium of arts. I think it was a beginning of my dream to become a designer.

I am inspired by lots of things. Usually I get my inspiration automatically. It just comes to me. Collections such as “Bug” or “Pansy” are related with the nature, however, collection “Pansy” is inspired by Lithuanian fairytale about damsel girl. Mostly my collections are related with the nature creatures as well as collection “Birdy”. Also I get extremely inspired by historical fashion, movies, music, etc.

How did you get into the world of designing? How long have you been doing this? I started to design at school (perhaps I was sixteen). I created my first experimental collection called “Water Color”. Then I had my other collections which were named “Bug”, “Birdy”,“Pansy” and now I am working with my new collection about circus life. Also, I study fashion design in Vilnius Academy of arts. So now I am trying to develop my brand professionally. I really enjoy collaborating with photographers and magazines.

When you say the whole design process is a long way to finish. So how long do you typically spend finishing a product? What’s been the longest and shortest time you’ve spent on one piece? I really do like embroidery and detailing, so I pay lots of attention to this. I spent three months embroidering a corset for one dress. It was a real challenge for my patience. Typically I spend 1-2 weeks on one full outfit.

I’d like to talk more about your design process. What does your process look like from idea generation to the final product?

What does color mean to you? How do you take color into account when designing?

Firstly I have to have an idea and an inspiration on how my woman should look like. Then I need to start working on research, for instance, searching examples, sketching, exploring materials and prints. Then I have to start my practical work such as sewing and constructing research, and after that come my final general garment sewing. So it is a long way to finish.

The biggest part of my time is spent on color and print research. I do not work a lot with construction. My individual style is extremely bright and colorful. Some my works remind of a kitsch art. I try to show my idea through colors and images that I use in prints. Also I use a lot of embroidery and beading details. Sometimes I like to paint fabric by myself. I think that handmade work is very important, because it creates a connection between costumer and designer.

THE INTERVIEW

PHOTOGRAPHER PIERRE MANNING INTERVIEWED BY TAK TAKEI

Pierre how and when did you get into photography? When I was 12 years old my mother bought me my first Camera and it was a Polaroid. I studied photography at college and start working as an assistant just after I was out of college. Thereafter, my first Job was with a photographer that specialized in advertising. After 5 years of assisting I became a REAL photographer 17 years ago. So what draws you into the world of Polaroids? We noticed your Polaroid series and we really enjoyed it. I loved the idea that the image was revealing in front of my eyes. The smell of the fixative that they used on the Polaroid was really good... (see image to right). The smooth finish of an original and unique Polaroid made it special, just thinking that there was only one image and nobody else would ever have the same as mine.

“The smooth finish of an original and unique Polaroid made it special, just thinking that there was only one image and nobody else would ever have the same as mine.

So what are some of the secrets you’re willing to share for those wanting to explore Polaroid photography? It may have been a natural part of photography for those from certain generations, but the younger photographers today may have never played with Polaroid before. There are no secrets for Polaroid user. It is as easy as riding a bike! It is simple and fast. The fun part is that the images never come out the same way each time!

So you’ve been shooting photography for a quite some time. What have been some of the major shifts in this industry? How have you been adapting to this ever-growing industry? I was lucky enough to shoot film, so I processed and worked in the dark room, learned the zone system, worked with the first digital Camera Kodak and Nikon from Nikon d-1 to d-4. What equipment do you use for the Polaroids? I work with POLAROID SX-70 / 8X10 INSTANT FILM / 4X5 B/W Do you have any reason why you like Polaroid SX-70 over many other versions of Polaroid cameras out there? Though expensive, the SX-70 was popular in the 1970s and retains a cult following today. Eminent photographers such as Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, Helmut Newton, and Walker Evans praised and used the SX-70.

Phase one digital back but everything that I learned it was from my experience with film. Now everybody can play with a camera. Everything goes fast and your images kind of get lost in the sea of Pixels. This is one of the reasons I love Polaroid because it is unique. Like in every industry, you have the best in the field and the ones that try to catch up. So as a photographer you need to explore and try to find new ways to shoot.

Who else do you follow with great Polaroid work? Lucas Samaras Maripol (worked with Madonna ) Scott Hammond http://www.thelovelyroad.com/
