10 TOQUILLA STRAW HATS Wrongly called ‘Panama hat’, the toquilla straw hat is weaved mainly in the provinces of Manabi (Montecristi, where the technique has its origin) and Azuay (Cuenca, where the biggest production is located). The raw material needed to elaborate the toquilla straw hat comes from a native Ecuadorian plant, similar to palm. The fibre is cut from its stems and after a long process, it’s woven into hats. The finesse of the hat is measured in grades, the more finesse the higher grade and its commercial value. The traditional weaving technique of the fine Ecuadorian toquilla straw hat has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
