Hellenic Dairies is a third-generation family-owned company exporting to 47 countries worldwide. As the leading dairy producer in Southeast Europe, the company is committed to delivering high-quality products. Managing Director Nikos Stavropoulos discussed Hellenic Dairies’ achievements, in conversation with Antonia Cole.

INrecent years, Hellenic Dairies has experienced significant growth, Managing Director Nikos Stavropoulos said: “Our group’s decision to open a new halloumi cheese plant in Cyprus is an exciting development, reflecting a strategic investment in the growing popularity of halloumi cheese worldwide.”

The turnover of the Hellenic Dairies Group reached €599 million in 2023, which is over €100 million more than the previous year. Headquartered in Trikala, Greece, the company harnesses the traditional flavours of the country and makes them accessible on an international scale. Of total sales, 61% were from markets outside of Greece, highlighting Hellenic Dairies’ strong global presence.

Since 1950, the company has continuously evolved to offer the highest quality nutritional dairy products that champion the traditional Greek Mediterranean diet and culture. By incorporating industry innovations and strategic investments into practices, Hellenic Dairies has driven forward growth.

“We recently acquired Bulgaria’s largest dairy company, United Milk Co,” added Mr Stavropoulos. “This acquisition is a key part of our strategy to expand our presence in the Balkans and enhance our product offerings across the region. These milestones underscore our dedication to growth, innovation and maintaining our leadership in the dairy industry.”

Expanding facilities

Hellenic Dairies has accomplished many milestones in recent years, advancing the company’s capabilities and market position. A major achievement was the completion of a €20 million investment into its feta factory.

From this expansion, the company doubled production capacity to 55,000 tonnes. This has allowed Hellenic Dairies to meet the growing global demand for feta, placing it ahead of the competition.

“Our new halloumi cheese plant in Nicosia, Cyprus, is also a significant turning point for us,” explained Mr Stavropoulos. “This

investment has already created a positive impact on the local economy. It has created new jobs and supported local dairy farmers, which further strengthens the company’s ties to Cyprus.”

The new facility features advanced technology, with sustainable practices that enhance efficiency and minimise environmental impacts. Offering the largest halloumi production capacity in Cyprus, at 18,000 tonnes a year, this €70 million investment highlights a commitment to quality, innovation and sustainability.

“Our expertise in producing authentic feta has positioned us as a leader of the market,” continued Mr Stavropoulos. “With the addition of halloumi, we are solidifying our presence

in the cheese category and completing our portfolio of PDO Mediterranean products.

“This new facility will allow us to offer a more comprehensive range of traditional, high-quality Mediterranean cheeses, meeting growing global demand and reinforcing our commitment to excellence.”

The grand opening of this factory took place in October 2024, where Hellenic Dairies welcomed customers, suppliers, officials and others to celebrate the achievement. Guests not only enjoyed a meal of authentic Cypriot dishes, but they also had the opportunity to take a tour of the site, seeing how innovation, tradition and sustainability have been combined to produce premium halloumi.

Award-winning products

The company offers a broad portfolio of products, with the most popular being feta, halloumi and Greek yoghurt. Hellenic Dairies’

authentic flavours, crafted with high-quality ingredients, attract consumers who value nutrition and taste.

Authentic Greek food is currently a growing global market. In 2023, total feta exports from Greece reached more than 87,400 tonnes, halloumi exports form Cyprus totalled almost 38,800 tonnes and Greek yoghurt from Greece achieved over 107,600 tonnes. Each of

these categories has experienced significant growth over the past five years, with a 19% increase in feta, a 15% increase in halloumi and a 39% increase in Greek yoghurt.

“Feta remains a market favourite due to its versatility and distinctive taste, making it a key ingredient in many dishes worldwide,” commented Mr Stavropoulos. “As the largest producer of feta, we have perfected the balance of flavour and texture that people love. Halloumi has also seen a surge in popularity, especially as people discover its unique qualities, such as the ability to be grilled or fried without melting.

“Greek yoghurt is another top seller, known for its creamy texture and high protein content. This is a health-conscious, nutritious and delicious choice for both savoury and

sweet dishes, which has helped it gain widespread appeal.”

The quality of Hellenic Dairies’ products and operations has won the company several awards. This year the OLYMPUS Kefir Forest Fruits was awarded gold at Monde Selection, but the company has also been recognised for its environmental policies and sustainable practices. Hellenic Dairies won green awards at the World Packaging Awards 2023 and The Most Sustainable Companies in Greece 2024.

“It is an honour to have been recognised for our efforts through many prestigious awards,” added Mr Stavropoulos. “These awards and accolades not only represent our commitment to protecting the environment, operating responsibly and supporting local

communities, but they also reflect our team’s dedication to creating top-quality products for consumers. Each award recognises our pursuit of excellence and ability to maintain our role as leaders, driving sustainable development in the industry.”

A growing farmer network

Hellenic Dairies has evolved from a small family business to being the number one dairy producer in the region. The company has grown alongside partners and suppliers over the years, building relationships that maintain trust and encourage mutual success.

“Our suppliers and partners are absolutely important to the success of Hellenic Dairies and the quality of our products,” said Mr Stavropoulos. “We rely on a network of trusted dairy, fruit and nut farmers, plus ingredient suppliers who share our commitment to excellence and authenticity.

“Their dedication to providing high-quality fresh milk and other ingredients is essential to maintaining the standards that our customers expect. Many of these farmers have been with us for generations, and we are

here to help them grow and overcome any challenges they may face.”

For Hellenic Dairies, suppliers are a significant part of its journey towards optimised production. The company supports farmers with fair prices, ongoing training and access to resources that help to maintain and improve farming practices. Through this collaboration, Hellenic Dairies is able to ensure that it receives quality milk, enabling it to maintain high standards.

“Hellenic Dairies has ambitious plans for the future that focus on growth, innovation and sustainability,” continued Mr Stavropoulos, in conclusion. “We hope to continue expanding into new markets, particularly in regions where there is a growing interest in Greek and Cypriot products.

“The food and drink industry can be challenging, but there is nothing more rewarding than working towards a common goal with my team. My role at Hellenic Dairies excites me as I have the opportunity to be part of a company that not only values tradition and quality, but also embraces innovation and growth.” n
