This tour will see the band playing their biggest Australian shows to date and heading west to play their very first headline performance in Perth. Adding to the critical acclaim and commercial success, tracks

from An Awesome Wave made three appearances in Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown of 2012, including an impressive third place finish with Breezeblocks, a song described by NME as, “a delicate, macabre triumph”. The band featured as part of Laneway Festival this year, performing to packed out crowds across Australia and gaining a whole new legion of fans along the way. Their set left critics raving and the swelling crowds hypnotised, singing and swaying in unison. Whilst in the country, alt-J (∆) announced a surprise headline show at Sydney’s Metro Theatre. In a similar fashion to their debut Australian performances in October last year, the show sold out in minutes. Those lucky

WHEN LEGENDARY ROCK band Kiss first toured Australia in 1980, Nick Percat was still eight years from being born. While Kiss have completed several world tours and even a much anticipated reunion tour since that inaugural visit, Percat has not only entered the world, he has set his own mark in the world of motorsport. The Adelaide-born speedster turned plenty of heads when he won the 2009 Australian Formula Ford

TWO OF SYDNEY’S most documented haunted locations have inspired three new film projects. Morning Starr Productions and Rebekah Biasi Management (RBM) teamed up to shoot The Quarantine Hauntings, The Parkway Hauntings and The Q Station Experiment - on Sydney’s northern beaches at the Q Station on North Head and at Deep Creek, on the Wakehurst Parkway. Executive Producer, Bianca Biasi, said there’s a good reason why movies about haunted locations aren’t usually made on location. “To help us come up with the final product, we enlisted the help of paranormal enthusiasts and sceptics alike,” Bianca said. “The result was quite amazing, by the end of the shoot, we found many of the non-

Championship, but rocketed to fame two years later when he won the Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at his first attempt in a Holden with Garth Tander. He drove in the Dunlop Development Series as part of the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide last year and was back in front of a home crowd this month after clinching a last minute deal in the Porsche Carrera Cup with the local Team BRM outfit, with the support of Coates Hire. Percat hung around to catch Kiss and Motely Crue at the biggest post-race concert ever seen in Adelaide. “Kiss are really like rock royalty, so getting the chance to see them play is going to be cool.” Percat took his preparation for the weekend to another level when he decided to pay tribute to Kiss frontman, the infamous blood spitting, fire-breathing, lizard-tongued Gene Simmons. The 24-year-old spent a couple of hours under the pencils of a local make-up artist and went through a few cans of hairspray to make sure his hair was “just right”. “When it comes to rock and roll, Gene Simmons is one of the greats,” said Percat. “The passion of a band like Kiss to still be playing as hard as they do after all these years is just amazing. “After the effort we made to get the make-up and hair right for this bit of a stunt, I now realise what an effort it must be just to get ready for a concert night after night.”

believers had just about joined the enthusiasts’ camp. We also took along with us a psychic medium who has worked alongside law enforcement authorities in their efforts to solve some of the nation’s most puzzling crimes.” Biasi added the crew had not expected or planned for some of the events that took place during the shoot. Actors working on the films had been “totally freaked out” by the experience with one almost requiring hospitalisation due to shock at Deep Creek, while the psychic medium successfully made contact with a spirit at the Q Station. “That was a fascinating experience in itself and we go into that in a fair bit of detail in the final cut,” she said.

“I have a new respect for the Q Station at North Head and I’ll never ever go back to Deep Creek off the Wakehurst Parkway and neither will my colleagues if I can help it.” The film was made with the assistance of funding from Metro Screen, while the Quarantine Station at North Head donated use of the location.

SYDNEY’S MARY AND the Banks are entrancing a new audience with their catchy pop wherever they go. After a successful run of gigs through 2012, including a residency at the Annandale Hotel and a sellout show at Sydney’s iconic venue, The Basement, the band were ready to head back into the studio to record EP number two.

new tracks, including the lead track Breathe. Mary and the Banks grew out of an entirely serendipitous encounter with Mary Bokey, fresh out of high school, moving from a small town in the Southern Highlands in NSW to Sydney, chasing her dream and looking for like-minded songwriters to start a band and write an album. At a music industry event in 2011, Mary met song-writing brothers Zane and Jy-Perry Banks. The trio soon became a quartet with Mitch Burzzese joining in mid 2012 and they quickly discovered that they all had a love of the same type of music and all shared a common goal – to write songs and play music around the world. “I love to write about my feelings and experiences. I love to record my life in songs, so that I can always look back and remember the feeling of being in love, of being heartbroken, of sometimes being wrong and of living life to the fullest,” said Mary. www.facebook.com/ events/517566834932386/

JAYNE DENHAM HAS celebrated her maiden outing with ABC Music by tapping into her rebellious side with her third album ‘Renegade’, to be released on April 12, 2013. Jayne worked closely with awardwinning producer Garth Porter (Lee Kernaghan, Sara Storer, James Blundell) to capture the excitement and electricity of her live show. Pulsing tracks like Renegade, Addicted To The Diesel and Jam The Jam are signs of new times and each are destined for the big stage, with strong hooks and a razor-sharp rock edge. Fans of Jayne Denham’s previous releases will instantly relate to country party tracks, Cowgirls MIA and Trick It Up. Shelter and Grew Up Round Trucks both melt hearts and show a new element of Jayne’s musical evolution to music fans. This Is Rodeo is a new anthem and Outlaw is classic Aussie lore,

focusing on two of the country’s most famous female bushrangers. Perhaps one of the most exciting tracks is Beyond These City Lights,

which pairs Jayne’s vocals with those of special guest Shannon Noll. Noll penned the track with acclaimed songwriter Lindsay Rimes, (The McClymonts, Lee Kernaghan) and felt it was a perfect fit for Renegade.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN for Australia’s biggest breast cancer research event, the annual Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic. Every Mother’s Day for the past 15 years, Australians have walked or run to fund research and honour those diagnosed with breast cancer. More than a quarter of a million Australians have participated in past Mother’s Day Classic events, and you can too this year by registering at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au. Since Women in Super initiated the event in 1998, 5 year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have been increasing, and now stand at 89% of those diagnosed. ME Bank contributed significantly to the 2012 event as major sponsor, a position it will hold again in 2013. The 16th annual event, on Sunday 12 May 2013, is open to all ages and fitness levels and participants range from large teams brightly and creatively dressed in pink costumes, through to inter-generational family groups and running enthusiasts.

Mother’s Day Classic National Chair, Louise Davidson, said there was a wonderful community feel to each event. “Whether you walk, run, cheer, fundraise or volunteer, by taking part you’re helping to fund essential research - the more funds we raise, the faster a cure can be found,”said Ms Davidson.

“By setting up an online fundraising page and asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor your walk or run, you will help make a bigger investment of funds for future generations of women with breast cancer,” Ms Davidson said.

THE IVY LEAGUE has welcomed 19-year-old Perth singer/ songwriter, Georgi Kay, to the fold. Joining the likes of The Rubens, Alpine, Lanie Lane, Cloud Control, Deep Sea Arcade and Josh Pyke, Georgi is considered to be one of Australia’s most talented and exciting young artists.

At the age of 10, lefthanded Georgi taught herself to play upside down on her dad’s electric guitar listening to his diverse range of music – from Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles to more modern Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay, as well as Grace Jones, BB King, Elvis and Michael Jackson. At 17, she won Song Of The Year WAMi for Breakfast in Bedlam and in 2010 won the MySpace/ Sony/fbiradio National Songwriting competition for You & Me. Georgi is also the cowriter and vocalist on Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl’s platinum-selling single In My Mind, which also won Best Dance Release at the 2012 ARIA Awards. In My Mind was recently nominated for a Grammy for best remix and has now sold over a million copies worldwide. Earlier this year, Georgi played the role of the troubled Melissa in the Jane Campion directed television

mini series, Top of the Lake. Filmed in Otago, New Zealand, the miniseries also stars Elizabeth Moss, David Wenham, Holly Hunter and Peter Mullan. Georgi originally went to auditions on a whim for an extras role but Campion took a shine to the hopeful who had brought along her guitar to pass the time. As well as the acting role, three of Georgi’s songs appear in the series. To top it all off, Georgi was personally invited to appear at Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where the series received a standing ovation. Top of the Lake premiers in Australia on UKTV in Australia on March 24. Georgi’s debut release on Ivy League will be out later this year and the first taste of things to come, her track, Ipswich, is already receiving airplay on triple j. Written whilst vacuuming, Ipswich is darker than her previous work, drawing on her love of horror/ supernatural films.

WITH THEIR FRESH hit songs and bold production approach, talented Australian sister duo Baylou (Barb and Victoria Baillie), bring an exciting new mainstream country sound to the Australian music market with the debut album Go To Hell & I Love You. Victoria is already highly regarded in her own right, having won a Golden Guitar for Best New Talent at the 2010 Country Music Awards of Australia, as a solo act, while Barb has carved out her own reputation as a player and singer having played on tours

with leading artists, including Adam Harvey, Beccy Cole and Troy Cassar-Daly. Go To Hell & I Love You features 11 original tracks, including tracks co-written with award winning and chart toping international writers Eric Paslay, Emily Shackelton, Jamie Paulin and the Grammy nominated Ira Dean. Hoedown, These Lips, Target On My Heart and Wreckless symbolize the catchy, fun and energetic tone of the album. Novocaine showcases stunning instrumentation from a selection of

Australia’s finest studio musicians. The title track Go To Hell & I Love You, Sweet Red Wine, and the euphoric For You showcase Victoria and Barb’s vocal quality while also tapping into their personal side. Baylou’s debut single Target On My Heart was a #1 Australian Country single - topping the CMC Top 30 Countdown, as well as peaking at #3 on the National Country Radio Airplay chart. The pair were also chosen by a panel of Australian music industry experts to represent Australian

AFTER TESTING THE waters with his debut single Heart of Gold, Rif Raf (Joel Rafidi) is now set to release his five track EP entitled Day 1, featuring the lead track, Always Home. With more than 600,000 views on his youtube channel, Always Home is set to keep the fans coming. A song that was inspired after Rif Raf’s confusion over criticism received from people who don’t

understand where he comes from, Always Home pays homage to his roots and all the opportunities that have been presented to him throughout his life. With parents that migrated from Palestine and Lebanon, Rif Raf was born in the heart of Sydney’s West and then raised in the South. “The message I want to relay in this song is that we are one and I will always pay homage to where I

come from,” said Rif Raf. Rif Raf embarked on his musical path from the age of 10, learning to play bass and forming his own bands, playing a myriad of music. Listening to all genres including hip hop and rap, his influences came from the likes of Tupac, Jurassic 5, Eminem, Kanye West and many more artists whose words are their music. His passion for American hip hop became obsessive. Day 1 the EP includes five new songs - Day 1, Staring at the Wall, Always Home, I Am and Summer Zone. All tracks are written by Rif Raf and give a very personal outlook into his life from bullying to ex-girlfriends to the love he has for family and friends. “Day 1 is ultimately a tribute to my very good friends who have always showed their utmost support and belief in the fact that I could become everything I am from day one,” said Rif Raf. “It finally feels like Day 1 is the first day of the rest of my life and I understand who I am and the path I must take.

A NEWSPOLL SURVEY conducted for the Australian Writers’ Guild last weekend shows that a clear majority of six in 10 Australians support additional Australian comedy and drama requirements for the new digital free-to-air channels, and six in 10 Australians would find a reduction in the levels of local children’s live action content unacceptable. With Senator Conroy’s media reforms package approved by Cabinet, the minister claimed broad public support as a reason to rush the legislation through Parliament. But according to Australian Writers Guild executive director, Jacqueline Elaine, the Newspoll results indicate that the ALP is out of touch with the views of the Australian public on this issue. “The ALP claims to understand that seeing Australian stories on Australian screens is vital in reflecting and maintaining our identity, but this legislation simply does not support that claim,” said Jacqueline. “While the commentary around the proposed media reform legislation is focused on the multinationals fighting over ownership issues, there is a real risk of Australia losing its unique cultural identity when it comes to the plethora of emerging digital free-to-air commercial channels,”added AWG president, Jan Sardi. The Newspoll results also show that only three per cent of Australian adults think there is too much Australian comedy and drama overall, but 43 per cent feel that there is not enough. Similarly, only five per cent feel that there is too much live action children’s content, but 40 per cent believe there is not enough. Six in ten adults (59 per cent) would not accept moves to reduce the amount of children’s live action content below the current 30 minutes per week per channel. AWG says the ALP’s own Convergence Review recommended a specific quota for the culturally significant yet commercially vulnerable areas of drama, children’s television and documentary for the digital multichannels. The Newspoll figures show there is widespread majority support for such measures throughout the community. In the 35 and over age group, there is a two to one majority of the Australian public who believe these extra channels should have to show a minimum amount of new Australian drama and comedy. But according to AWG, the package being rushed through parliament provides only a loose Australian content requirement, which allows cheap reruns to count, adding that it ignores expert review, it ignores the government’s own publicly stated opinion, and that it also ignores public opinion. Australian stories are much more expensive to produce than to buy-in ready-made US and international programmes. With three times the number of channels, AWG says if these changes are passed by Parliament and become law, history and global evidence suggests that Australian screens will be flooded by American content and Australian stories will be lost in the deluge,

a situation it says the Australian public has been very clear is not acceptable to them. www.awg.com.au

I think what your writer Carol Sheridan said was really nice, she admitted that she didn’t really know Lisa very well but she didn’t try to make out that Lisa was her best friend. I was very angry when I saw all the posts on Facebook about Lisa and how suddenly everyone was her best friend and she theirs, and how they all lost their very best friend. It made me sick how so many people used such a sad situation to draw attention to themselves. Cheyanne X Dandenong, Victoria, Australia

Daryl Bohantha Springvale, Victoria, Australia

Ed: Lisa was a lovely person, our thoughts are with her family and true friends.

SURVIVING THE CLIMB

I’m scared of heights, but when I read your article on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I decided to do the climb. I DID IT! I can’t say I wasn’t scared, and I can’t say that I am over being scared of heights, but I DID IT! Tonya Allendale Narellan Vale, New South Wales, Australia Ed: Congratulations, Tonya!

Good on you for sticking up for the Australian Grand Prix. I hate football and I’m sick of the whingers who slag off at the event. Jeremy Kay Heathmont, Victoria, Australia GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? Send prodijee an email at goingpostal@prodijee.com

Standing strong “I get knocked down, But I get up again, You’re never going to keep me down.” The lyric’s to Chumbawamba’s anthem, I Get Knocked Down, resonate with almost anyone who has walked the earth, and in particular, the people featured in the pages of prodijee - those who have tried to turn their passion into reality in the fields of entertainment, sport and business. But I suspect the words mean even more to the people of New Orleans, who apart from dealing with the battle of daily life, have had more than their fair share of environmental disasters. Not long after surviving the fury of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, felt the full force of the BP Gulf disaster, and no doubt had many residents wondering how much more they could take. But after visiting New Orleans last month, it’s clear that the city has survived these natural and man-made disasters and remains the exciting, vibrant and welcoming metropolis it has always been famous for. Disasters aside, New Orleans is also known as the birthplace of traditional jazz but once you get there and cruise the bars and clubs, you find a far more diverse musical environment and an amazing amount of extraordinarily talented performers. Over the coming months prodijee will showcase some of this talent, which I am sure will only tempt you more to sample this remarkable city for yourself. DARREN HOUSE PRODIJEE.COM

NATIO ANTIOXIDANT LIP SHINE It’s hard to believe, but in Australia, winter is just around the corner, and with that cold weather comes cracked pouts as our lips are exposed to the elements and particularly susceptible to chapping and cracking. The Antioxidant Lip Shine contains a cocktail of revitalising antioxidants including vitamins and Grapefruit Oil to help slow free radical damage caused by environmental stress. roadtest CAROL SHERIDAN REVIEWS LANCÔME GÉNIFIQUE EYE LIGHT-PEARL

T

en to fifteen years ago, I couldn’t understand why women would undergo cosmetic surgery or spend so many hours searching for that fountain of youth product that would reduce sag, bag, wrinkles, crinkles, and more. Why couldn’t women (in particular) learn to age gracefully, be who they are, grow old with dignity? Now… bring it on, give me antisag, anti-bag, anti-wrinkle and crinkle by the bucket-load, please! It’s funny how you change your mind when things become more relevant. The problem now is that there are so many ‘solutions’ to all the above problems that it is hard to know where to start. Which ones will work, which ones won’t work, which ones are affordable, can you

PRODIJEE.COM

get the same result for less money? Should I expect overnight results? Should I expect results in two weeks, two months…. Well, call me impatient but if I am paying good money for a product, I want it to work NOW. It’s even better if it shows more results after a period of use but I want to walk out the door looking good NOW… I will worry about the later… LATER. With so many products with high claims to choose from, it’s almost a case of putting on a blind fold and casting a dart into the ‘problem fixing dartboard’, which is pretty much what I did. When I went out shopping, the most recent advertisement in my mind was that of LANCÔME and its Génifique Eye Light-Pearl. I remembered the words in the advertisement – “Eye luminosity, the new visible sign of youth”, that sounded like what I was looking for. The benefits were said to be more luminous eyes, deflated eye bags and smoother skin after four weeks of use. Results showed 78 per cent of women thought that the eye contour was visibly improved. The advertising was certainly positive but would it work and was it affordable were the questions I was asking myself. Two weeks down the track and the conclusion is, IT WORKS! From the first application with the special 360° massaging Light-Pearl applicator, I noticed the difference. It is really interesting to watch. Apply the tiniest little drops around a puffy (notice I didn’t use the word baggy) eye area, then with a fingertip, dab lightly to incredibly gently massage the creamy serum into the area then sit back and watch the result as the product dries. For me, the puffiness totally disappeared in about 60 seconds.

Maybe it was just all in my head; maybe I just wanted the product to work, so I walked out of the bathroom and asked my husband if he could see anything different. “No” was his answer… hmmmm… interesting. I went back into the bathroom and applied the serum to my other eye, to me; it was the same result, all the puffiness totally disappeared in about 60 seconds. Again, I walked out and asked hubby if he noticed anything, this time he said, “Yeah, you look awake and fresh now, a few minutes ago you still looked half asleep”. Maybe he was just being kind and not wanting to say that my untreated eye had previously looked puffy and baggy. Since then, I have had a lot of very complimentary comments. Nobody has particularly picked up on the fact that the puffiness around my eyes has gone, but everyone is saying that I am looking really alive and happy. I have asked a friend to give me an honest assessment of before and after using the product, the result was that it definitely made all the puffiness around my eyes totally disappear, and pretty much instantly. I have been told that this product is also extremely good for dramatically reducing dark circles under the eyes. Fortunately for me, this is not something I suffer with … FINALLY… a skin problem I DON’T HAVE! What this product will do down the track, well, who knows, but for me, this one works, and it works NOW! I can give my 100 per cent approval to LANCÔME Génifique Eye Light-Pearl for removing puffiness from around the eyes. RRP AUS $99.00

WITH CHRISTINE CLAIS

The latest skin care news from paris I

have just come back from France where I went to investigate the latest skincare trends. I visited dozens of beauty salons, department stores, pharmacies, concept stores, health food stores: you name it! I talked to so many skincare professionals who were all so happy to share their local industry knowledge with me. So, here is my report on the latest trends from the French world of skincare: HYALURONIC ACID: a central ingredient to a lot of French skincare ranges This has to be my favourite skincare ingredient! Also known as the fountain of youth, hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that occurs in the dermis and that contributes to our skin looking young and plump. Its production rate decreases with age and also because of free radical damage caused by our lifestyle. When used as an active ingredient in a skincare product, hyaluronic acid binds moisture to the skin (it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water), very effectively diminishing the appearance of wrinkles. BB cream or Blemish Balm cream: THE must have product Although not new- they were first created in the mid 1960’s by a German dermatologist- BB creams have become the latest craze in France and beyond. They are promoted as a an all-in-one treatment (to replace your serum, moisturiser, primer, foundation, and sometimes even sunblock). I prefer to use mine as a coloured tint over a serum or/and a moisturiser, and sometimes with a little mineral make up on top (if I want more coverage). Regardless of the way you choose to use it, a BB cream will always help to minimise lines, diminish the appearance of pores and

PRODIJEE.COM

pigmentation and make any ageing skin appear smoother, younger and healthier. A girl’s best friend really! Dermo-nutrition: internally supplementing the skin with borage oil In France, borage oil is strongly marketed as THE anti-ageing nutritional supplement for the skin and is available for purchase everywhere (even in supermarkets!). Borage oil is extremely rich in essential fatty acids or EFAs. EFAs are considered essential because they are needed

throughout human life. As our body cannot synthesize them, they must be provided through our diet. These EFAs are involved in number of important roles, notably the fight against inflammation, the absorption of complexion-friendly antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins and the resilience and integrity of our skin cell membrane, all of which contributing to slowing down the ageing process. Please note that borage oil is contra-indicated during pregnancy to whilst breast feeding. To a healthier and younger looking skin, naturellement! fter one of the most amazing dining experiences of my life this week and the onset of another brilliant Australian autumn, I am compelled to share with you what I believe to be one of Sydney’s best kept secrets. It’s not often that, as I chef, I dine out in this city and am completely 150 per cent satisfied to the point where I go back to the one spot three nights in a row. That is until now. CAFE NINO. This quaint little Italian kitchen in the suburb of Woollahra is a hidden gem. Set discreetly on the main street, it is unexpected but very welcomed. As you walk in to this warm, little Italian kitchen you instantly feel at home. Pungent aromas fill the air, and through the peep hole behind the bar you can see the chefs busily creating culinary magic, whilst to the side Nonna overseas every aspect of her operation. We are greeted by Claude, the maître de, who has a stern but sweet presence about him. After taking in the fishing nets on the ceilings and all of the other diners happily eating every last morsel of their delicious dishes, we are seated and greeted with a menu - a simple yet seasonal selection of market fresh seafood and handmade pastas and sauces. The special board rings alarm bells and I just can’t help myself. Before you know it, we have ordered half of the specials and a third of the menu. Wow this is going to be a long night, I think to myself. Of that long list, the oysters came first - Sydney rock oysters perfectly finished with the traditional Kilpatrick trimmings. The oysters are fresh, plump and taste absolutely

PRODIJEE.COM

divine. Next course is the crab spaghetti, like nothing I have ever tasted before. The napoli sauce is cooked to perfection and the pasta is so obviously handmade and ridiculously fresh. My taste buds by this stage are having a party and we have to keep the moans of enjoyment to a minimum as to not embarrass ourselves. Before I know it, more tantalizing

WITH SARAH FRENCH

for the taste buds as we devour the mussels. These larger than life mussels are the freshest I have ever seen and are gorgeously adorned with a delicious and unexplainable creamy tomato sauce. The perfect partner for this dish is the garlic bread, as we use it to mop up every last bit of sauce. I can’t help but go on about how amazing this is. Like a women possessed, I eat every last drop. It’s gone as if it never existed Out next came the grilled scampi with lemon sauce. Absolutely blissful and without fault, these crustaceans do not last long on the table. Last, but definitely not least, we have the barramundi. Whole and grilled with a simple side of lemon, the flavour is insatiable and the texture is to die for. This simple, fresh piece of fish has been instantly turned into something magnificent and delectable. An obvious yet subtle flavour that will

be etched into my mind until my next visit. The love you taste in every mouthful of this honest and humble Italian cuisine is anything but subtle and leaves you completely satisfied but wanting more. The perfect match for an Australian Autumn,

where an escape from the cooler weather is in order or you just feel like being taken back to an old town in Italy where everything is simple, fresh and always cooked from the heart. Until next time.. Stay Warm and Stay Fabulous!

‘Basque-ing’ in San Sebastian

B

ob Marley is on the brain as I walk out of the refreshing waters of the Bay of Biscay, on San Sebastian’s La Concha beach. “Sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah,” oh yes it is, Bob. While only 20 minutes from the French border in the north of Spain, San Sebastian (or Donostia in Basque), is a haven of activity for the beautiful people who work to live. Locals and tourists alike stroll the promenade, sun bath, swim, surf or simply engage in animated conversation, while children laugh riding the antique carousel. How convenient that my hotel (Hotel De Londres Y De Inglaterra), with its old world charm, and grand exterior, is divided from the beach by the promenade; a perfect base for my wanderings. Once showered and changed, it’s show-time! I’m off to the Old Quarter (Parte Vieja), for some wellearned Pintxos (Basque style tapas), and a cleansing ale. San Sebastian is famous for its seafood, and second only to Paris, for its Michelin Star restaurants. My personal favourite, however, are the tapas bars: so how to choose from the vast array on offer? Rule of thumb for me is people - the more the better, and the fresher the produce. So work your way to the bar, order a drink, and take a plate from the choice of exquisite gastronomic delights on offer - order hot dishes from your hosts. Decide to stay or bar crawl (Txikiteo), continuing from one to another; some octopus here, a potato omelet there, and croquettes and Jamon Iberico - everywhere! Don’t forget to throw your PRODIJEE.COM

serviettes and toothpicks on the floor once you’ve finished. Not as traditional, but a personal favourite, is the Paulaner Bierhaus located at Calle de San Vicente 7. Okay, so I love German draught beer but the calamari is fantastic and the German specialties are good too – but, back to Spain! Time to indulge in some culture, as behind the Bierhaus is The Church of San Vicente - a Gothic masterpiece. After a few ‘Hail Mary’s’, I’m off to the Central Tourist Office located on Del Boulevard Aldapa 8. WITH RIELY SAVILLE

Here you can obtain a map with all the major attractions featured, and I suggest perusing this in the nearby square with a caffeine hit. The recently renovated Aquarium and Maritime Museum offers colourful marine life and history of local shipping: Adults 12 Euros, Children 6 Euros - open 10am till 8pm Monday to Friday, and 10am till 9pm Saturday and Sunday. This is well worth the visit. A must visit, is the ‘Parque de Atracciones’ (Amusement Park), on Monte Igueldo. This can be reached by foot, but why strain yourself

when you can ride the 100 year old Funicular, which departs regularly between 10am and 9pm, for less than 3 Euros return. Once you have reached the top, you are greeted by the most spectacular views of San Sebastian, and Santa Clara Island, which is located in the middle of the bay of Donosti and can be reached by ferry. The park, although somewhat dilapidated, presents a variety of vintage rides, so I decide to climb the old tower (for a small fee) to gain an even greater view of my

surrounds. Wow! Shopping for designer wear or Spanish couture, is plentiful in the Nuevo Mercardo San Martin complex, or La Bretxa, and peruse La Parte Vieja in the old quarter - something for everyone can be found here. If music is your passion, consider visiting Europe’s longest continuously running Jazz Festival in July, or for celluloid connoisseur, the International Film Festival in September. Whenever one is in such a beautiful destination, there is never enough time! So plan and enjoy! Ciao.

HOW TO GET THERE: San Sebastian airport is 22km from the city centre. Train from Madrid or Paris to the main Renfe station Paseo de Francia. WHERE TO STAY: Hotel De Londres Y De Inglaterra: Zubieta 2, 20007. Hotel Maria Cristina: Paseo Republica Argentina, 4. PRODIJEE.COM

here else could you celebrate Valentine’s Day sitting next to Ryan Gosling or Rachel McAdams? Well maybe not at their table but perhaps the table next to them. It’s a risky business taking the love of your life to Chateau Marmont. What if your lover, spends the entire Valentines dinner staring at that beautiful actor remembering every scene from The Notebook? I am from a Catholic upbringing and every Sunday I would go to church, but these days it’s the Chateau Marmont I religiously visit on a Sunday. Freshly squeezed Grapefruit Juice, Kale/Beet salad and an idyllic garden terrace atmosphere awakens my body and soul on Sunday mornings. On one of my more recent visits to the Chateau, I sat beside Christopher Lloyd, who played Dr Emmett Brown in the 1985 film Back to the Future. Let’s travel back in time and remember some other great names that have spent their days and nights in Hollywood’s star defining hotel, Chateau Marmont. Almost as long as there has been Hollywood, there’s been a castle on the hill. Chateau Marmont quickly became the hotel of choice for Hollywood stars. Because of its unique location and privacy, A-listers have flocked to this magical hotel. Located on the legendary Sunset Boulevard, Chateau Marmont first opened as an apartment block in 1929 but because high rents kept renters away, the Chateau was transformed into a hotel in 1931. Expensive prices didn’t discourage the glamorous, lifestyle loving celebrities, and the luxurious Chateau quickly became a way of life for many. Each of the sixty-three rooms, cottages and bungalows are a home of their own. The majority have full kitchens, sitting areas or living rooms;

PRODIJEE.COM

some have formal dining rooms, balconies and private terraces. Perhaps this also explains why some guests check-in for months at a time. Robert de Niro lived in the penthouse for two years and Keanu Reeves, on and off, for more than sixteen years. Johnny Depp lived there for four years and said that he and Kate Moss, “Probably made love in every room in the house.” During the 1950s, eccentric billionaire, Howard Hughes, lived at the Chateau for three years and Natalie Wood first met James Dean here during a reading of Rebel Without a Cause in Bungalow 2.

Greta Garbo came here to disappear, registering as “Harriet Brown”. An undiscovered Marilyn Monroe frequented the Chateau and there are rumours that she also fooled around there with American playwright, Arthur Miller. Walking down the hallway you can probably still smell her favourite perfume: Chanel No. 5 Dominick Dunne made the Chateau his home when he stayed there for the entire duration of the OJ

Simpson trial, which he covered for Vanity Fair. Roman Polanski also lived there after directing Rosemary’s Baby in 1968, the year before his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered. Paul Newman also met his wife, Joanne Woodward, there. Jean Harlow carried on a scandalous affair with Clark Gable while still on honeymoon with camera man, Harold Rosson. Director Billy Wilder offered to sleep in a bath rather than suffer the indignity of staying elsewhere. Jim Morrison, of The Doors, high as a kite, jumped off the roof of a poolside cabana. Robert Mitchum was photographed doing the dishes in an apron and John Belushi tragically died of a cocaine and heroin overdose there. Once you think you have heard it all, there is one more story for you actor Terence Stamp was doing yoga on his balcony... naked. Really, the list of greats to have frequented its rooms is endless and their enthusiasm unparalleled. Sandra Bullock describes it as her favourite hotel. “It has an incredibly seductive atmosphere. No wonder people come here to have affairs – it’s got that air of history, where you know a lot of people did things they weren’t supposed to do.” Writer-director, Sofia Coppola, used Chateau Marmont as inspiration muse for the movie Somewhere and in 2010, won the Golden Lion for the best film in the Venice Film Festival.

Chateau Marmont is one of those ‘must party at before you die’ places. If you want to party like a rock star, stay the at penthouse ‘party’ suite - its balcony overlooks Sunset Strip. Harry Cohn, founder of Columbia Pictures, said in 1939 to young Hollywood actors, William Holden and Glen Ford, “If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont.” If Chateau Marmont means trouble, then trouble is my middle name. And paparazzi are not even a concern because they are not allowed to cross the road. What happens in the Chateau truly stays in the Chateau.

A little piece of Italy in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo Y

ou know you’re home and eating with family when you visit Criniti’s restaurants and the ‘King Pin’ himself, Dominic Criniti, greets you at the door with, “Ciao Bella”. The restaurants, at the famous Restaurant Row and Residential abodes at Woolloomooloo Wharf in Sydney, Australia, are a hotspot for many celebrities, such as radio jocks John Laws, Kyle Sandilands and Oscar winner, Russell Crowe, to name a few. The Italian tradition is to walk down the piazza and have La Passeggiata, which is alive and well at the Wharf, as the locals call it. The Wharf has that feel about it, with a choice of six dining experiences and Sydney Harbor all in the one piazza strip. Criniti’s Restaurant has grandeur about it - the double story restaurant featuring Italian light fittings, Italy’s finest paint finish ‘Stucco Veneziano’ on the ceiling, a traditional Café Sport Bar and the fantastic Forno di Legno Wood Fired Oven. There are two showcase Ducati 1000cc speedsters hanging from the ceiling facing each other, while the full Ferrari engine hanging in the private dining room is a signature piece at all Criniti’ Restaurants. Our menu reads like a children’s fairy tale book full of all my Italian favorites, with more than 300 choices from, pasta, metre-long pizza, seafood, antipasti, calzones, meats and amazing appetizer’s, including Mum’s favorite polpette in sugo, braciole di riso. We started with the tuna capriccio, totally to die for, then followed with figs and prosciutto, fiore di zucchine stuffed with goats cheese and then the Mamma’s polpette al sugo, which brought PRODIJEE.COM

tears to my eyes and took me back to my childhood days of cooking with my Nonno ‘Grandfather’ and the braciole di riso, of Italian cheese and rice... so tasty. After loosening my belt a notch and taking ground of table 42, we started to go through the cozze ripiene, which blew my mind, I found the Holy Grail of food.

My grandfather had been a fisherman and I was brought up eating all types of seafood, sometimes even for breakfast at 5.00am (from boat to plate). It was awesome and formed the way I have grown up. To this day, when I eat the cozze ripiene at Criniti’s, I see my parents, uncles, aunties, cousins and grandparents sitting around a kitchen table eating seafood. It is all about La Famiglia and how the food brings you together. Before I get all teary-eyed with passion, Dominic Criniti arrives at our table, telling us his family story - how his dad still goes to the Sydney fruit and vegetable markets every day to keep a standard of food to support his sons, Frank and Dominic, who own all Criniti restaurants in Sydney, and how their mum still makes all the polpette meatballs so the quality will never change. Whilst talking to Dominic, we discovered some things we didn’t

know about this Italian food mecca - they have a sushi chef for all the Crudo on the menu, such as sushi, sashimi and steamed dumplings with an Italian twist. It’s a strange thing to find in an Italian eatery, but Dominic’s theory is, “I have the Japanese sushi chef at the Crudo Bar and if the people want sushi, I will give them whatever they desire”. Our next course, fresh homemade pasta, was put in front of us. The largest plate of seafood linguine you have ever seen, full of crustaceans and seafood - absolutely amazing! Also served was the gnocchi quattro formaggi, a sexy, rich texture of heaven with a tasty soft pillow. It made me think of Heidi Klum walking down the runway in a Victoria’s Secret fashion show looking like an Angel... WOW! Dominic Criniti, you hit the WOW... simply outstanding. At this part of the evening I was ready for my favourite dessert, zuppa inglese, and an unforgettable tiramisu. The only thing left to put me on Italy’s Via Veneto in Rome was a Caffé Shakerato, which is simply a cold double espresso coffee poured over ice in a cocktail shaker with some liquid sugar, shaken like crazy and then strained over a martini glass. Perfecto Auguri Famiglia Criniti!

on the wine trail

WITH JOHN ANTHONY

St Hallett 2007 Faith Shiraz St Hallett was established by the Lindner family in 1944. As one of the founding wineries of the region, the winery was named after one of the early surveyors of South Australia in the early 19th century with the addition of the “St” unknown of its origins. It was not until the 1970’s that St Hallett capitalised on the true potential of the Barossa Valley through premium table wines and then during the 1980’s refined their focus on Barossa fruit varieties and in particular Shiraz. Today St Hallett is renowned for crafting full flavoured, textured wines entirely from Barossa fruit. The grapes for the wine selected for this review, a 2007 St Hallett Faith Shiraz were sourced from vineyards across the Barossa including Lyndoch in the South to Eden Valley in the West, giving a good variety of flavours from varied climate and soil regions. The Cellar door is located at St Hallett Winery, St Hallett Road, Tununda, South Australia and is open 7 days a week 10am to 5pm. THE REVIEW: I selected this wine in particular to enjoy with a very traditional yet satisfying repast of Roast Beef followed by Apple Crumble. The key ingredients of the meal – succulent, tender roast beef, served on a bed of grilled herbed tomato covered by creamy yet textured gratin potato accompanied by simple yet delightfully fresh new beans. This was all accentuated with an appropriate red wine jus. The crumble pastry was a masterpiece of that short buttery pastry you know is not good for you but you still keep wanting more of. Atop the pastry was a golden crumble concealing the fresh, sweet apple and cinnamon flavours that bite at the tastebuds and cut through that buttery goodness. Whilst pouring the Shiraz, I could see the wonderful ruby rich colours that I love about a Shiraz and was even more pleased to note that it was not too plum in colour as you can have, in say a Hunter Valley Shiraz. The nose on this wine was divine! I could smell the fruits and berries just wafting from my glass, with that beautiful musty hint, hidden there and not obtrusive. From the first taste to the strained drops forced from an all to quickly consumed bottle, this 2007 Faith Shiraz delivered what I was looking for – Full bodied delicious berry fruit flavours wrapped around just a hint of a cocoa tone and to cap it off, one of the smoothest and lightest Shiraz tannins I have had for a long time. My verdict is obviously that this is a great wine and one I hope is very representative of the entire St Hallett Shiraz range, which, if it is – then I can highly recommend. Aaron Lopez-Barrantes NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, USA WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? I was born in Ganges, France in 1988. Then moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the US after my first two years in France. I have a twin brother Samuel, and both my parents teach drama and voice, one at Duke University in North Carolina, and the other at Cal Arts University, in California. I love my family, they’re all very supportive and have always been there for me. Growing up in North Carolina was great. Having a twin brother growing up is like having a best friend around constantly. We are very close. He’s been living in Paris for the past couple years, now he’s studying for his masters degree in London. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN MUSIC? I grew up in a very musical house hold, singing and dancing around the living room to Beatles records was a common activity. My parents have great taste in music, so I was exposed to many great musicians like BB King, James Taylor, the Beatles, jazz, and classical - pretty much everything from an early age. However it wasn’t until I was 13 or 14 that I really began to dedicate myself to music. HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? I grew up with piano lessons, but never really had a passion for it... but playing an instrument was always encouraged at home. When I turned 14 my mom fixed a guitar she had from college and put new strings on it, made it look new. She gave it to me for my birthday and it just sort of clicked. I became attached to it. The guitar, for me, was a really intriguing instrument. In high school I started listening to folk singer songwriters, and really got inspired by players like James Taylor, Neil Young, Paul Simon and David Wilcox. When I went to college, I fell in love with electric guitar and obsessed over learning Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King tunes. I haven’t looked back since. I get inspired by someone new everyday. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT MUSIC? Everything, music is healing. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you listen to, how musical you are, or what knowledge you have of it; Everyone has a PRODIJEE.COM

relationship with music in some way shape or form.. Music transcends all cultures. Music makes the world go round. WHAT MUSICAL WORK HAVE YOU DONE? I’ve just finished recording my first studio album here in New Orleans, at Fudge Studios, where I wrote, composed and played on all my tracks. I currently play my own guitar show four days a week at the Maison Dupuy Hotel in the French Quarter. Playing music for a living has always been my dream, and I’m living it now. I played in bands all through college with my brother and friends (one night I was lucky enough to get pulled up on stage to play guitar with blues guitarist Robert Randolph, who came and did a show at my university when I was 18). This past year I’ve been able to collaborate with amazing New Orleans musicians on my record, I’m very lucky and have learned a lot playing music in this unique musical city of New Orleans.

PRODIJEE.COM

WHAT WORK DO YOU WANT TO DO? I want to play my music! all over the World. I want my music to reach everyone from New Orleans to Australia. I’ve just finished the process of recording my first EP and I would love to keep recording, writing, and working on new projects. It’s a great and rewarding process to write and record my music, it’s something I always dreamed of doing. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS? Drawing might have been my first love, until guitar came around and occupied most of my high school and college years. I majored in Illustration and Studio Art at the University of Vermont. I love doodling and sketching, it free’s the mind. I’ve also played basketball my whole life. I’m a big fan of the sport and anytime I get the chance to shoot hoops or play with friends, I’m there. WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES AND WHY? I’ve been influenced by so many different musicians and genres, it’s hard to settle on a few. But here are a couple names that have really inspired me over the years: The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor, Neil Young, Marvin Gaye, John Mayer Coldplay, Radio head.. the list goes on, it’s hard to narrow it down. Folk music played a big role in my life when I started playing the acoustic, then I got hit hard by the blues getting into electric guitar, now I’m putting all the other pieces together. I play a three hour acoustic set, four nights a week, year round, so I spend a lot of time with my acoustic guitar trying to master different strumming and picking techniques to make my show more versatile. PHOTOGRAPHER BROOKE ORCHARD IS FOLLOWING HER PASSION, CREATING STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL, VINTAGE INSPIRED IMAGES. PRODIJEE.COM

WORDS: CAROL SHERIDAN PHOTOS: BROOKE ORCHARD

M

elbourne based photographer, Brooke Orchard, admits to being a dreamer. She loves to be original, loves something to have deep meaning and she simply loves to create beautiful images. “I like to photograph children and I love history, so I often do children’s theme shoots that have an historical or fairy tale element to them. People’s personalities, uniqueness and their individual journeys are of great fascination to me, which I guess accounts for my passion for portrait photography. “Whether I am shooting a beauty portrait or a real life character study, the element I’m seeking is always the same - feeling, mood, emotion and connection - it’s that small window of time the eye of the subject can convey to me something from deep within. Capturing this is a real thrill! PRODIJEE.COM

“It’s the number one ingredient for a great portrait,” said Brooke. Brooke’s love of photography began when she was in secondary school after she was given a camera as part of her art class to take home for a week. She was instantly hooked and has had a camera ever since, and continued with her new found passion by studying at the Photography Studies College in South Melbourne. It was the creativity and ‘capturing something’ that hooked Brooke. She initially loved to photograph landscapes and still life, and admits to taking photos of anything and everything but that has since changed. Her photography has evolved and now she only photographs people. “Once I started studying, we had to do certain things for our folios. There were all different categories, like landscape and still life, which

you had to do for the portfolio. After four years of study, we were free to do whatever we liked. I just kind of cut out everything else and went for people. It wasn’t a conscious decision, it was just something that happened. “I guess over time, I really have become interested in people and personalities and I’ve got a bit of a thing with analysing those personalities. I like emotion and all of those sorts of things that you get out of people. I love to capture the moment and the emotion, and all the things that you get from a living person. Everyone has something, whatever mood it is, and everyone has something unique. “Some people are harder to photograph than others because they don’t always let their true self show. I like to photograph children, because they are unpredictable and uninhibited.”

PRODIJEE.COM

When Brooke was studying, she submitted some vintage inspired photography in her folios. It was always well received but her reason for doing this style of work now is because it’s her style of life. “I originally started shooting vintage whilst studying photography, it was during this time that I got the notion to combine my love of imagery and vintage fashion, and this was the content of most of my folios during that four years, after which I graduated top of my class. I had done the vintage photos for folios and I did a lot of it but I never offered it as work to PRODIJEE.COM

people. I just stuck to the normal stuff in the beginning. I have only offered it to people recently; I don’t know why I have taken so long to do it. “A friend of mine suggested I take photos of what I love. It sounds simple but sometimes simple isn’t always right in front of you. It also sounds obvious, but it wasn’t. There is not an overflowing culture of ‘do what you like’ and it’s hard to think you can make money doing what you like.” Brooke’s love and passion... vintage style! “My inspiration for vintage

fashion was born out of old movies. As a girl I would watch movies spanning from the 1930s60s. I absolutely fell in love with the way the women looked, so elegant, classy and feminine, not to mention stylish! The 1950s silhouette I found particularly appealing; who could go past those hourglass curves? The look for me holds such a wonderful combination of contrasting qualities; it is soft and feminine yet strong and striking at the same time. You then have this delightful concoction of alluring sensuality, softened by innocence and vulnerability. Sweetly tempting!” Brooke has adopted the vintage style as her lifestyle, admitting to never leaving the house, and rarely even around the house, without being dressed and made up in this fashion. The day I met Brooke, it was easy to tell who she was in the restaurant where we were meeting. Blonde, beautiful, hair and makeup beautifully perfected into simple and vintage elegance and wearing a vintage inspired skirt that I later found discovered she had

made herself. This delightful woman is a joy to talk to, her passion is vintage and capturing the moment in other people. Her photographic work is divine and now highly sought after. From an early age, Brooke has been interested in sewing and collecting vintage patterns. “When I first started doing the vintage photography, I would make the clothes as well, so there would be this whole big production with me making clothes. I would get an idea, make the clothes, then find location, and get hair and makeup done. This was all for my folios for school. “I did lots of research. I watched old movies and I’d find old magazines - I didn’t have a computer or internet back then, I was really late getting into all of that. I’d go op shopping and to markets as a teenager and pick up patterns for 10 cents. I’ve got boxes of patterns!” Whilst proficient in the styling for the vintage look, for customers, Brooke is deeply focussed on

creating the right image - the scene. She brings in professional hair and make-up artists to help out but also admits to liking to get involved in that side of the creation herself as well. Admitting that Vintage is, “Pretty much a whole lifestyle for me”, Brooke says that other women want this type of photography done for

PRODIJEE.COM

different reasons. “Some are really into the vintage scene/look and they wear it all the time. I guess they want to capture that. There are others who aren’t into it and they want to dress up and look like that just for the fun of it. It’s a really classic look, some eras have some really dated looks, but I think vintage has never looked dated, it just looks classic and very feminine.” Not many people would have a full wardrobe of vintage or vintage inspired outfits as Brooke does, so she offers her clients a range of garments and props, such as her XM Falcon, that she has collected or made over time. In consultation with her clients, she will work out exactly what sort of image they are looking for, what they want out of the image and has found that generally people will have an idea of what it is they want. “They might email me a few photos of what sort of thing they like or they might go from other shots I have done and some just let me do whatever I want because I am the one who knows about it. They might bring a couple of outfits and then we go from there. It depends, some have very specific ideas and some don’t. “I always allow a bit of time before the shoot as well, to go through the clothes and discuss again what it is they want. We narrow down the outfits and work out the idea for the shoot.” I asked Brooke what her all-time favourite old movie is, she looked at me, considered my question for a minute and then answered, “There are way too many to even start to talk about”. I get the impression that Brooke has spent a lot of time relishing in the vintage television and movie era. “It was a little easier for her to identify her favourite actresses Lauren Bacall, Gene Tierney, Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth. Of course, Marilyn Monroe is on that list too, her look, her ultrafemininity is what attracts Brooke to her. PRODIJEE.COM

AFTER COMMENCING HIS CAREER AS A COSTUME MAKER, AUSTRALIAN ADAM BOWDEN IS MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF DESIGNING CUSTOM BAGS IN JAPAN, EMPLOYING THE ZEN PHILOSOPHY, WABI-SABI; BEAUTY THROUGH IMPERFECTION. PRODIJEE.COM

T

hough a very successful costume designer in Australia, Adam Bowden decided that it was time to explore his roots in Japan. Originally from Adelaide, Adam moved to Sydney after graduating from college to work as a costume maker for the Australian production of The Lion King. From there he continued to work as a costume maker for theatre, television and film and worked with such prestigious companies as The Australian Dance Company, The Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Ballet and The South Australian Opera Company. His credits include The Lion King,

PRODIJEE.COM

Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia and Starwars Episode III. “In the end, I chose to leave the costume industry because, as a freelance costume maker, I either had too much work or no work at all. After years as a freelance costume maker in Sydney I took a job as a permanent costume maker at The State Theatre Company in South Australia. This job had me working very long hours and left me with little time for a life outside of the theatre. “However in the little spare time I had, I found myself looking for creative things to do in my free time. I realised that although costume making is considered a creative job,

for me, in the end, it was just a job of fulfilling a brief; a brief that was given to me by someone else for someone else. “Constantly trying to please and bring life to other people's visions with little or no recognition for the hard work of the people in the workshop left me tired, stressed and frustrated. I wanted to find something creative that allowed me to be both a designer and a craftsman. I wanted to show people my skills and creativity and bring my own ideas into the world.” Frustrated with wanting to find something new and not happy with the lack of recognition for his work, Adam travelled to Japan to

explore his roots. Adam's hero and inspiration had always been his grandmother, a Japanese woman who married an Aussie soldier after World War II. It was his grandmother who first taught him to sew. The brand name YUKIHIRO is, in fact, taken from her maiden name. “Bag making wasn't my first choice, I considered work as a costume maker in Japan as well, however language is a barrier and it is a small and difficult industry to get into, with the hours often much higher than in Australia. “I spent some time making plush art toys out of vintage fabrics, played with the idea of specialising in making coats or corsets and I even went to ceramics classes for something different, but nothing felt quite right. “Having spent a large part of my costuming career sitting at a sewing machine, I was also reluctant to go PRODIJEE.COM

back to spending all my time once again sitting at the machine. “Throughout my career I had many opportunities to work with leather and I always enjoyed it. I was searching for something to make that was useful, that people wanted, but it also had to be fun for me to make, something with an air of sculpture but still involved my pattern making and sewing skills. It took me two years of searching and experimenting to find something I enjoyed making. I started experimenting with hand stitching leather and made my first bag. The idea really hit me when I was sitting on a crowded train in Tokyo and realised that every person had a bag - old people, business people young people, even young men carry bags in Japan. “While my grandmother had planted the seed of my creative career by teaching me to create and sew, she didn't really have the

sole influence on my decision to make bags, although growing up in a household full of women may have given me an appreciation of the value and usefulness of carrying a bag. “Both my grandmother and my mum have a passion for bags and, of course, shoes and thusly, so do I. I have many memories of Saturday mornings shopping with my mum, my grandmother and my auntie...clothes, shoes and bags were always on the agenda, with breakfast and a trip to the toy shop squeezed in.

“I guess the clothes, shoes and bags rubbed off on me though, because as I got older I always had a good collection of shoes and backpacks, and now nice leather bags and more shoes than I can count. My mother is always saying to me, “You're just like your grandmother,” and my grandmother often says the opposite. “Branding took me some time to think of but in the end I felt it was my grandmother who set me on my path, who gave me the skills to create and the courage to try, so Yukihiro was born.” Now Adam is living in Tokyo, Japan, working as a designer, focusing on the production of oneof-a-kind, hand stitched leather bags and accessories. YUKIHIRO bags combine the elements of western culture and Adam’s Japanese heritage, each bag is designed and hand stitched by Adam himself. While most makers of leather goods tend to discard hides with imperfections, YUKIHIRO embraces them. In Zen culture, the most conspicuous and characteristic feature of traditional Japanese beauty is known as wabisabi; beauty through imperfection. It is also more ecologically sound to use all of the leather, thus making each bag unique.

HAVING WON OVER HOME AUDIENCES, BRITISH ACTRESS JUDI SHEKONI IS GAINING A LEGION OF NEW FANS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC. PRODIJEE.COM

MANCHESTER BORN BEAUTY, JUDI SHEKONI, ROSE TO FAME PLAYING PRECIOUS IN EASTENDERS BEFORE GOING ON TO PERFORM ON NAVY NCIS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, GARFIELD II TO NAME A FEW. LAST YEAR, JUDI APPEARED IN THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE TWILIGHT SAGA, BREAKING DAWN II, PLAYING ZAFRINA - LEADER OF THE AMAZON COVEN. AN EXOTIC MIX OF SPANISH, ENGLISH AND AFRICAN, JUDI SPENDS HER TIME BETWEEN LONDON AND LOS ANGELES, PURSING HER ACTING CAREER AS WELL AS OPERATING TWO BUSINESSES. WORDS: DARREN HOUSE PHOTOS: WWW.BRETTERICKSONPHOTO. COM AND WWW.BLINKITPHOTOGRAPHY.COM YOU ARE A SHAKESPEARIAN/CLASSICALLY TRAINED ACTOR. WHAT WAS THAT TRAINING LIKE? I enjoyed it - I haven’t done as much of that training as some other actors but what I did I loved, and Shakespeare really opened up the power of words to me. YOU HAVE PLAYED MANY CHARACTERS OUTSIDE OF THE SHAKESPEARIAN/ CLASSICAL SPHERE - HOW HAS THIS TRAINING HELPED YOU IN THESE OTHER TYPES OF ROLES?

PRODIJEE.COM

I think all of my array of training has helped in creating each role - it’s hard to separate it after a while. It is all just what I have in my toolbox that I can bring to the table - anything that helps me get inside a character, I use. One day it could be breath work, the next it could be a magazine article. WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU TRAINED? I have trained a lot in Los Angeles, with the likes of Ivana Chubbuck and Margie Haber, and also with

Larry Moss, who is a genius. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE TYPE OF ROLE? One where I can really act something with emotion and depth. A character with an emotional journey. WHAT WAS IT LIKE JOINING THE ICONIC SHOW, EAST ENDERS? A blessing. To get to be a part of a show like that was a joy - it’s an institution and it will be something I

am proud of forever. WHAT PROMPTED YOUR MOVE TO THE US? I wanted to work more in the US and do more film. HOW EASY WAS IT TO FIT INTO THE LA LIFESTYLE? Sometimes easy, sometimes hard. The weather and the palm trees were easy to accept, but it has been tougher to find the right group of people to be around. That took a while. YOU HAVE PLAYED MANY ROLES IN THE US SINCE YOUR MOVE. WAS IT DIFFICULT TO GAIN ACCEPTANCE BY HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS/STUDIOS? I think it takes work and I have put the work in, and I am still doing so. I have been blessed to be able to work and I think that any obstacle in my way has been placed there so that I can learn something that I am meant to know. DOES HOLLYWOOD HAVE A GENERAL ATTITUDE (GOOD, BAD OR OTHERWISE)

TO UK ACTORS? I think they have a very positive attitude. Being British is looked upon well in the US because of all the amazingly talented people popping up from there. YOU HAVE A DISTINCTIVE LOOK. DOES THAT MAKE IT EASIER OR MORE DIFFICULT TO BE CAST, OR DOES IT MAKE NO DIFFERENCE? I don’t see any difference. I am who I am, take it or leave it. WHAT WAS IT LIKE DOING CELEBRITY LOVE ISLAND? It was a wonderful experience. With reality TV so prevalent in our time, I am blessed to have experienced it from the inside and without any major mishaps live on air! WAS IT A SHOCK TO BE THE FIRST VOTED OFF? Not really - I am not a crazy drinker and I take a while to get to know people, so I understand that may not make for the most riveting TV. It’s an entertainment show - people

deserve to be entertained! YOUR FEARLESSNESS AND LOVE OF ACTION HAS TAKEN YOU SKYDIVING, SWIMMING WITH SHARKS AND DRIVING TANKS ACROSS THE WORLD INCLUDING AFRICA, DUBAI, INDIA AND FIJI. PRODIJEE.COM

A lot of the things I have done have been work - but work I have definitely been up for! Last year I travelled to Jerusalem alone and I am planning a trip to Peru. I think that life is experiences, so I just like to have as many of them as possible!

My favourite book is The Creative Mind by Ernest Holmes. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF ACTING?

Spirituality. Travel. Meditation. WHAT’S AHEAD FOR YOU IN ACTING AND/OR BUSINESS? Success.

YOU HAVE ALSO MODELLED AND BEEN A TV PRESENTER. HOW DO THOSE ROLES COMPARE TO THE CHALLENGE OF ACTING? I haven’t presented in a while, and I stopped modelling a long time ago. But there were both part of my path and I enjoyed them. I love acting, as I consider it a craft and one that can be improved. I feel like I am improving - this didn’t happen as much with modelling or presenting. YOU HAVE BUSINESS INTERESTS IN LA, INCLUDING EXTENSION EVOLUTION. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? I briefly started an MBA but quit to continue pursuing acting - but I decided I would pursue a business in my spare time to still feed my love of business. It’s only small but it’s still going and always in profit - its a fun sideline. YOU ALSO FOUNDED ‘MAKE IT AMERICA’ AND ‘ACTORS EVOLUTION’ TO ASSIST ASPIRING ACTORS. HOW DO THOSE BUSINESSES OPERATE? These were created to assist other actors in relocating to Los Angeles. I created them to pass on any lessons I had learnt the hard way in the easiest way possible. I love passing on any new information I have found towards achieving success and this was one of the ways. IN YOUR DOWNTIME, NOT THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE MUCH OF IT, YOU LIKE TO READ. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? Oh, loads. I love reading - my kindle is my best friend. Right now - Celestine Prophecy, Ester and Jerry Hicks, and Dr David Hawkins Transforming The Levels of Consciousness. PRODIJEE.COM

CONFUSION REIGNS SUPREME WHEN IT COMES TO SKINCARE THESE DAYS AND IT IS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO KNOW WHAT PRODUCTS WILL BEST WORK FOR YOU. AS PRODUCTS COME AND GO FROM OUR SHELVES, ONE COMPANY THAT HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE 1911 HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME IN A MARKET WHERE ONLY QUALITY WILL DO. WORDS: CAROL SHERIDAN

I

don’t know about you, but I am becoming very confused about skin care products. We are told that we must avoid parobens and sulphates, and we must use products that contain products such as Aloe Vera to slow the ageing process, Patchouli to sooth, Aloe Vera for dry skin treatment, Vitamin E to protect cells from free radicals, Marine Collagen to rejuvenate from beneath the surface, coffee grinds to exfoliate, bird excrement to (I don’t know) …. Aarrgghh! Short of being an industrial chemist, what else can you do but stand in a store and read every word on a label and consult a dictionary and skin specialist before each purchase. To me, it’s getting just too hard and sometimes, just stepping back to what we have always considered basics is a lot easier. Back in the day, women used PRODIJEE.COM

to wash their faces with soap and water. Now, I know that there are some soaps that are said to be good for your skin, and I’m not recommending you get out your laundry soap and start washing your face, but it can be a bit easier than reading all the ingredients on the numerous products that seem to appear each day on our store shelves. Each and every one of them claims to have a new super ingredient that will do this, that and the other that will make you look years younger, make your skin glow, close pores, reduce wrinkles, whiten, brighten and lighten... One brand that has stood the test of time and been on our shelves since 1911, is NIVEA; it’s a name we have all grown up with. We remember watching our mothers and grandmothers use it morning and night. We remember having the

soft white cream massaged into our skin after a bath, or before we went out to play. We even remember our fathers using NIVEA as a shaving lotion, or as a soothing aftershave balm. It’s memories like these that have made the blue tin a part of family life for generations. NIVEA was the world’s first water-in-oil cream and has been a very highly regarded and trusted hand and body lotion since it first emerged. From the very start, Dr Troplowitz, who saw the value of this new type of emulsion as something of huge benefit to the cosmetic industry, had a goal to develop high quality products that were affordable to all. When NIVEA Creme was first introduced to the world in December of 1911, their goal was simple: better skincare for everyone. Until the early 1900s, most people spent their leisure time indoors. Tans were considered to

be unsophisticated and lower class, as only labourers and other manual workers tended to spend enough time outdoors to get them. All that changed in the 1920s, when the post-war zest for life saw people of all ages and backgrounds head outdoors and if possible, to the beach in their spare time. When Coco Chanel was snapped with a suntan in 1923, it heralded the dawn of a new era, and having a tan became ‘in’. As people began to spend more time outdoors, the previous beauty ideal of paleness and fragility gave way to a completely new look. Fresh, fit and healthy was now the way to go. In 1924, head of advertising for NIVEA, Juan Gregorio Clausen, came up with a campaign to use a photo of three happy, cheeky and fresh-faced young brothers, Rolf-Robert, Peter and Wilhelm Wiethüchter to promote their new ideal of fresh, fit and healthy. The campaign was a huge hit, and the brothers were soon greeted with cries of “Hello NIVEA!” wherever they went. Soon after the campaign launched, NIVEA was inundated with fan mail from girls all over the country. Photos and letters streamed in, PRODIJEE.COM

filled with adoring sentiments like, “We think that you are really cute!” and, “It’s a pity that you do not want to marry us, we like you a lot!” The campaign was such a success that it wasn’t long before the NIVEA Boys were joined by the NIVEA Girls, who were equally successful. In the 1930’s came the NIVEA

beach ball, and it took the world by storm. Originally created as a 3D version of the NIVEA Creme tin, the inflatable NIVEA ball was designed to help people make the most of their leisure time outdoors. While it was initially popular in Germany, the NIVEA ball really took

off in the 1950s, when post-war prosperity gave people money to spend on holidays and having fun. As cars became increasingly affordable, people began flocking to beaches and the great outdoors – and the NIVEA ball became the perfect holiday accessory. It was easy to pack and even easier to inflate. And it was fun for the whole family. By the 1960s, the NIVEA ball had become a huge hit, and it remains popular to this day. NIVEA has produced more than 20 million balls in the last 40 years alone, and people around the world know it and love it. As the demand for NIVEA Creme has grown over the years, the company has grown with it. Early on, new products were developed and added to their range to meet the variety of skincare needs, including NIVEA Soap in 1919 and a selection of hair care products called, NIVEA Hair Milk, in 1920. However, it wasn’t just an increased product range that people were looking for. They wanted products that were specifically tailored for their skin. In 1922, they delivered the first NIVEA product for men: the NIVEA shaving soap. When combined with the NIVEA Creme as an aftershave treatment, it became one of the first men’s skincare routines. In 1960, the company launched the NIVEA Baby fine product range, so that new parents could care for and protect the delicate skin of their newborns. By 1972, their Baby range consisted of a powder, bath, cream, soap and cotton-wool tips. And in the ‘90s, they further extended the range to provide a complete care and cleansing program for the sensitive skin of babies. While the babies were cared for, NIVEA then began to focus more on mature skin. In 1994 they developed NIVEA VITAL, the first special care series for mature skin. In 1998, their research led to another pioneering cosmetic innovation, the anti-wrinkle

ingredient Q10. The ingredient was used to create the NIVEA VISAGE Anti-Wrinkle Q10 Day Cream, which quickly became a bestseller. Throughout the decades, NIVEA has introduced us to many innovative skincare products, from deodorant to sun protection, and are always looking for new ways to improve their existing products. Perhaps this is why NIVEA resonates so strongly with so many people. It doesn’t just provide reliable nourishing care – it evokes the sights, smells and textures we associate with childhood, too. It is there, on our shelves, it is a quiet achiever, something we can just grab and know that the product will work, and it will do what it says it will. Whatever the reason, NIVEA is known as one of the most successful skincare products of all time.

But more importantly, it’s now a tradition for millions of families in more than 200 countries around the world. With NIVEA’s vast product range, which provides expert care no matter what your skin needs, Dr. Troplowitz’s vision has lived on, and I am sure, it will continue to for the next 100 years.
